AK Gubernatorial Race, CPAC, and "Putting Alaskans First"
As noted in an earlier post, the AK Attorney General Talis Colberg resigned today.
Palin is making it clear that she did not request the resignation and feels that Colberg was doing a fine job:
"It is a harsh political environment right now. You saw what he went through these last couple of weeks with speculation that a couple of the lawmakers wanted to continue to grill him, a couple of the lawmakers not believing, it seems, what he had to say," Palin said. "I just hope this political environment doesn't deter others who want to make a positive difference."
The grilling mostly came from Fairbanks Republican Rep. Jay Ramras, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
It seems as if Colberg felt targeted and just wanted out. The Senate "contempt" resolution over the Troopergate subpoenas was the final straw.
French sponsored the [contempt] resolution and also suggested on the Senate floor Friday that issues remained with the attorney general.
"I don't want to get sidetracked by the attorney general's performance in this episode, but it's worth pointing out that this resolution does not resolve questions -- significant and serious questions -- about his actions during this time," French said in the Friday speech.
He said after the speech, though, he wasn't sure what more could be done with Colberg and emphasized today that he hadn't planned further action.
Gee, nice of you to "emphasize" that today, Hollis. After you grilled the man and implied that you were going to do worse to him, you now want to "emphasize" that you weren't planning any further action.
Senate President Gary Stevens, a Kodiak Republican, said the Senate passed the contempt resolution to make it clear the matter was closed, not to come down on the governor. He said he was meeting with Palin today to make that clear.
Stevens said today that he was surprised at Colberg's resignation.
"When you think of Talis, ethics pops to mind. I've been really pleased to work with him and sorry to see him go," Stevens said.
Palin said she supports how Colberg handled the issue of the subpoenas and did not have concerns with how he was doing his job.
So basically a good man was worn down by his job. Why the partisan rancor right now? Well, the Guv offers a clue:
As some legislators, like French, say they're possibly interested in the 2010 governor's race, Gov. Palin used those political aspirations to paint a picture of the criticism Colberg had to deal with.
"People are starting to line up for their gubernatorial run, and campaigns kick off in less than a year now, and people are trying to position themselves," she said. "It's the nature of the beast of politics. It's not always pretty, it does become kind of harsh and brutal at times."
Other legislators cast aside Palin's claim with a jab of their own.
"We were not the creators of any harsh political environment," Sen. Johnny Ellis, D-Anchorage, said. "That happened because of other people's personal choices and political ambitions at the national level."
Political posturing for the 2010 gubernatorial race? You betcha.
The question still remains, will Palin run? I won't hide the fact that I really want her to run for a second term. Others may disagree with me, including the Guv herself. I think she can win a second term handily. I think Hollis French knows this too. I don't think he's dumb enough to run against her. If she decides to run, I think Hollis will let Keith Olbermann's twin be the fall guy.
What does this have to do with CPAC? Well, some of you have suggested that Palin is steering clear of "partisan" national politics because her base back home doesn't like to see her play the role of right-wing Joan of Arc. They prefer their Sarah the way she was prior to August 29, 2008.
In my earlier post on CPAC, I quoted Palin's comments about Alaskans being "a little bit more parochial" in their attitude about their governor traveling out of state. "We want to make sure that our Alaska officials are serving the people who literally have elected them," she said.
Such a notion strikes this Californian as completely foreign. The Governator could depart for months on end, and we would hardly miss him. (Hell, we might be better off if he left!) But Alaska, as always, is different.
Take a look at this mini documentary KTUU made about the "big news story" of 2008:
The overall impression I got from this mini documentary is the sad unspoken sentiment that "Mommy left us." And I don't mean that in a smart-alecky way. I rather like this "we're all a big family" quality about Alaskans. There are more than ten times as many people living in my county than there are in the entire state of Alaska.
Alaskans know their Sarah. Most of them have met her personally or know someone who has. Sarah Palin is their Mother Hen, the Queen of the Last Frontier, their very own Joan of Arc.
And now it seems to them that she's outgrown them. She's hanging with the swells in the Lower 48.
I think this subconscious sense of abandonment might account for some of the bitterness felt by some Alaskans. They should not feel this way though. On the very day that she might have become the nation's vp, she told them, "Forever I'm going to be Sarah from Alaska."
And, as I noted earlier, she promised to always put Alaska first. And she always has.
She's taken a lot of flak for accepting Fred Malek's invitation to attend the Alfalfa dinner. Mr. Malek now has a post up on his blog about his impressions of Gov. Palin. He lists them in bullet point fashion and saves the best two for last:
Here is what impressed me most over the weekend:
* The warmth John McCain showed toward Sarah Palin when she arrived at my home Friday night. It was the first time they had been together since the election, and their good feelings toward each other were evident.
* The gracious and engaged Sarah Palin was with everyone. It was great to see her in deep conversations with people like Alan Greenspan, Madeleine Albright, Walter Isaacson, and Mitch McConnell. For sure, nothing shallow about this lady.
* The celebrity treatment Sarah received from the highly sophisticated crowd at Alfalfa. There were as many or more people lined up to meet her as there was for President Obama.
* Sarah’s singular focus on her job as Governor of Alaska. She left Anchorage on a 2:30 a.m. flight Friday so as not to miss a day on the job, and she singled out people to meet who could be impactful to Alaska, including President Obama.
* Sarah’s grace and charisma reminded me of why she had been selected as John McCain’s running mate. [emphasis added]
Her "singular" focus is on Alaska. That's why she's not attending CPAC. She keeps her promises.
And if she decides to run for re-election, she'll mop the floor with these jokers.

i adore this post so much. and even more having what Mr. Malek said at the end. this woman is the epitome what should be in a national/international figure, political or otherwise. it's astonishing to find out everyday that there's something about the Guv to make you love her even more. in her corner all the way.
Screw the union.

I'd bolt from NJ in a heartbeat.
The Tenth Amendment Foundation is gaining quite a following; there are resolutions all over the country and Alaska is one state where one such resolution may be filed. As a point of interest, New Hampshire is one state where one such resolution has been filed. If 'Cuda got on board with a moderate sounding resolution, it could be a way for her to get some pub in New Hampshire.
Anon - i read that several states are in line to use the 10th. AK was in the second group of states mentioned that may follow suit. this is going to be very interesting. especially now since salazar reversed bush's drilling plans.
Awesome review of today's news.
I get what you're saying about people whining because they're losing their mother hen. It does seem like that when you think about it. A bunch of cry babies trying to discredit her, so she doesn't move behind Alaska's border. Also, Hollis, Ramras and all the crybabies of AK who keep on picking on her are seriously jealous of her newfound fame.
I think her run for governor again won't be hard because people there who already love her loves her even more now. And when you think about what she has done for Alaska, she will win, unless Hollis or whomever pulls out another stunt a day before voting. :-\
I can not wait till that type of dedication to WE THE PEOPLE is in the White House...
or
im with Toki...
if this Spendulus passes and they shove universal health care down our throats...

Ramrocks, nice post. I followed the Joan of Arc story which was published on 29th August at 6:15 PM and it has this interesting nugget:
"she has come under withering criticism at home from business-minded Republicans who consider her a misguided populist and an intellectual lightweight. "
So the intellectual lightweight meme originated in the Republican business circles? That's revealing. The talk radio hosts fell in love with her but the conservative intellectual elites didn't. The talk radio circuit said that it's because the conservative elites want to be chummy in Washington but it maybe because they don't want their entrenched interests in the country clubs etc to be under assault by a fearless crusader. Gives a new perspective to the "good old boy networks" doesn't it?
I think another reason why she should not run for re-election as Gov., is the world economic situation. I do believe we are in for a very long, world wide, economic recession that could last 5 years or more. The resemblance to the economic collapse in Japan is erie.
In 1990 Japan experienced exactly what the US and the world is experiencing now. A housing and real estate meltdown, a banking system collapse because of toxic assets, and their stock market going from 40,000 to 16,000 in one year's time.
In response the Japanese did exactly what the US is doing now: taking interest rates to zero and greatly expanding the money supply; taking ad hoc measures to shore up their banks instead of letting them fail; and running massive government deficits with the national debt skyrocketing. Their national debt went from 20% of GDP in 1990 to 95% today.
However, none of this worked, and economic growth has been stagnant for the last 18 years.
Therefore, the US and world could be facing a similar fate of zero economic growth and falling prices for all commodities - including energy - for a long period of time.
Right now Alaska has enough budget reserves to ride this out for 2 years. But after that they are going to be in big trouble if oil prices and the economy don't recover.
If Sarah runs for re-election in 2010, she may be in a position in her second term as Governor, where she will have to impose massive budget cuts, and or, have to find new revenue sources like imposing a state wide sales tax or a state income tax. Also, if the economy and energy prices don't recover her pipeline proposal will die in 2011.
Given this, she would be much better off being a US Senator and taking shots at Obama over his economic performance - instead of being a second term Governor and having people taking shots at her economic performance.
For the next several years its going to be much easier being a legislator than an executive.
What a great post! I know her and McCain lost, but I still get all excited when I see my guv getting introduced as the next vice-pres of the US.
We were in Dubuque, Iowa on election day. Once we told people where we were from, everybody wanted to know about her and what we thought of her and how much they loved her too! It was pretty awesome!
When we got to Fairbanks we went out to our favorite restaurant for prime rib and vodka. We got talking to this guy we knew about the election and he said that he voted for Obama. I asked him why and he said he didn't want Sarah to leave our state yet. She does too good of a job here and didn't want to lose her yet. I don't know, I was pretty pissed about that. Yet that seems to be how a lot of people I talked to anyway think. I just think that the whole country deserves somebody this good and honest running things for us.

Someone asked me if Obama won would I move to Canada. I replied, "Eff Canada! I'm moving to Alaska!" But only for the summer. I can't be away from my Texas for too long no matter how ungodly hot it gets here.
Michel A. - that's so interesting to hear. i had watched a news cast askin Alaskans about the Governor running for VP and most AKs were spoke about how she was doing such a good job in AK that it would be devastating to lose her.....id feel the same way knowing who the alternatives to Sarah were.
interesting poll at KTUU:
who's to blame for the 'harsh political atmosphere'
http://www.ktuu.com/Global/category.asp?C=81466#poll80555
That's an unscientific poll, which are usually dominated by Obots and zombies; perhaps, we are catching up on the web?
Crist is throwing some big-money fundraisers for the RGA and the state party when he's in DC for the NGA meeting; I'd be interested to learn if she's going to be doing some non-Alaska stuff while she's there in DC for a couple days.
Well, even if they do impose a statewide tax it won't be as high as in other states. Alaskans do need to look towards other sources of income besides gas and oil.
That's nice to hear that they didn't want her to leave the state.
I saw the news story and it's great. BTW, did you see how natural she was when talking to the photographer? And in two weeks time how scripted she became on the interviews! Those Mccain handlers need to be shot really for turning a joyous spirited woman into a tape recorder.
Seriously, the more I see of her unscripted appearances, the more I admire her and love her.
I see the VP experience as equivalent to Obutt's star-making turn at Kerry's convention. For him, it was just a speech, for her it's campaigning; so she'll be more seasoned than he ever was on national stage when she runs in 2012 and she'll have plenty of governing experience while he screws the whole world.
Anonymous, we don't want to wait for another 10 15 years in economic darkness because that'd be detrimental to the whole world. We need someone like Sarah to bring us back. Sarah 2012!
Hey guys - more shit out of AK. They're going after her hard.
http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/
Sharks are circling but I am sure she'll be alright. Be careful, Sarah. I'll be praying.
Obama rapes the Treasury to the tune of 900 billion dollars to stuff his buddies at ACORN and the so-called progressives don't care but there are conspiracy theories about projects she hasn't even cleared yet. Come on!
"Progressive Alaska"
Progressive, of course, being a fancy way of saying your a Pinko asshole.
That's all you need to know about that shit stack
Toki, you're right.
You and I would accept 2 plus 2 equals four. But a "progressive" would have nothing so simple, he would definitely think there was CIA plot behind it.
motherhumpinmoose. can we get a team of untouchables together to protect sarah.
The problem Palin has is that she ran for Governor of Alaska promising ethical, open and transparent government. She told us to hold her accountable.
Every time we turn around there is a new revelation about her lack of ethics and integrity. Colberg is just the latest rat to jump ship. There will be more. Palin will toss anyone under the bus if it get's her anything. It's all about Sarah.
Honestly, I don't really see a lack of ethics and integrity on her part. Just on the part of the politicians who are out to get her. None of this happened until she started running for VP. Troopergate was over and that was all the MSM could really dig up. I think Ramras is a shill for the oil companies and Colberg is, well, who really knows other than he's a Democrat probably working for the bots, trying to take Sarah down. It's never been all about Sarah, she has stuck by her campaign promises and that is what should be expected of her.
I haven't seen her "tossing anyone under the bus". Anybody who keeps their special needs child and has such a close-knit family like the Heath's and Palin's are not just about themselves. Just an observation...
Emperor - what lack of integrity or ethics do you speak of with regard to the Governor? who's she thrown under the bus? hmmm?
Michael A,
You're darn right. I think both the corrupt oil company establishment Republicans and the Obama Democrats are tag-teaming up to bring her down.
Just a scenario. Hollis French keeps on his witch hunt. That Stephens guy will go to Sarah and offer a "deal" saying don't veto my projects and I'll stop the investigation. If Sarah falls for it, what would stop him from pulling a rug from under her feet? They are playing good cop and bad cop hoping she'd make a mistake. Which she hasn't, of course, so far.
The thing is it's easy to spin away fantasy scenarios and the progressives are particularly good at weaving conspiracies when they are none.
It's clear that Sarah cannot stretch her wings until this over and behind and both the establishment Republicans and Obama guys want to make sure she is pinned down.
its the smart move, I was reading cnn the other day and they were running stories about how terrible life in Alaska was. The storyline was clearly going to be Palin craves fame as Alaskans suffer.
Emperor,
Please dude ... please
This is all about Hollis French and her other enemies up there who used her run for Vice President to attack attack attack attack attack
its the Obama/Alinsky strategy
these low life types in the legislature are the ones acting like whining babies.
what a bunch of losers people like French are
Everybody seemed to like Governor Palin until she became a threat to NOBAMA.
Forget these agenda driven progressives..It's not even 2010 and they are after her creating conspiracies...
French is one of the biggest phonies. After the campaign was over, the Governor thought that she found common ground with french and then he goes and stabs her in the back. Go figure!
She will eventually settle out of this storm don't worry..

I think he is confusing Gov Palin with President Obama latest move.
Hello from Alaska.
Actually we don't think she puts anyone but herself first.
You want her? You can have her.
raven,
how about a trade?
You take Jon Corzine and NJ's $52 billion debt and we will take Palin
ok?
Raven,
Who's WE? Anchorage?? The guv still has 65% approval rating in our state! So that leaves 35% who don't approve.
Also to correct my above post, I didn't mean Colberg, I meant that asshole French.
Ravenstrick is probably an Obot
I'm willing to trade Corzine for a block of wood.
yo i'll trade our Governator for the 'Cuda anyday...bring it! or bring her :)
