Juneau Democrats Railroad Senate Applicants

Yesterday we reported on the machinations of the Alaska Democrats to reward Obama allegiance-pledgers in the state legislature who set up the Tasergate hit job. Read our earlier post for background, but the gist is that Juneau Senator Kim Elton was rewarded with a plush Washington gig in exchange for being one of the chief engineers of the manufactured "scandal". Elton and the Alaska Democratic Party are pushing Palin enemy Representative Beth Kerttula as Elton's heir in the Senate.

Governor Palin has to appoint a Juneau Democrat to the Senate, and while they are supposed to give her a list of candidates from whom to choose, she doesn't have to use their list. However, whoever she selects will have to be approved by a majority of the Senate's nine remaining Democrats.

Although there were quite a few applicants, the power-brokers have only given Palin the name of Kerttula. The Empire has an update today - Kerttula is, of course, humbled to be the only nominee.

Rep. Beth Kerttula said it was "humbling" to get the sole nomination of the Juneau Democratic Party to replace Sen. Kim Elton in the Senate.

"It was humbling to have that kind of support, and I appreciate it," said the Juneau Democrat.

Apparently it is odd to only nominate one candidate for a position, and the explanation does not sound particularly credible:

Legislative observers say it is unusual, but not unheard of, for the party to nominate only a single candidate to the governor but that a slate of three candidates is usually the norm.

[...]

Metcalfe said the party acted as quickly as possible because the recently shortened legislative session is ongoing without a Senator from Juneau. The party began advertising to fill the position even before Elton was appointed to be the U.S. Department of Interior's Alaska representative. (emphasis added)

What? Why would they be advertising this before Elton's appointment came through? According to the ADN, Elton was not formally offered the job until Friday, February 27th, and he resigned to accept it the following Monday, March 2nd. I guess they must have known the appointment was coming.

But I don't get why they would be advertising in any case, because apparently they had no intention of considering any other applicants besides Kerttula. Yesterday we mentioned pro-development Native Alaskan Gordon Jackson, who wanted to be considered for the seat. Today, Jackson published a letter in the Empire blasting Juneau Democrats for their "good old boy" selection process:

In a year when our President is leading the cause for more transparency in government, it appears that policy is yet to filter down to the Juneau Democrats. Instead of taking the time to at least contact those of us who wanted to be considered for the replacement of Sen. Kim Elton, you have a meeting with no notice, no questions asked of an alternative or any other related issues we might bring up.

It would not have taken much time to announce the meeting and give us at least a half hour to explain our vision of what we might do in the Senate. Instead, you use an executive committee and go forward with Rep. Beth Kerttula. I don't mind Beth and have told her so. But, if you send out an announcement asking for names, give them the time of day! Breathe life into the President's leadership, giving more openness in the governing process.

Instead of that, you close the door and give us the impression of business as usual in a year of change. Heck, I would have been happy to be assembled by the executive committee. But, we were not invited.

I would hope this transparency is given more meaning in the future. It takes time but I think many of us would have met Wednesday night to get this process over with as soon as possible so a recommendation would be sent to Gov. Sarah Palin as soon as possible! Thank you.

(The more I hear of Jackson, the more I like him. Sounds like he's not afraid to call out shenanigans in his own political party.)

So the Democrats put out a sham "advertisement" for the Senate position, and then never even gave the people who responded a chance to speak or make their case? Kerttula's selection decided in a closed-door meeting? This whole thing still stinks of Chicago-style corruption.

Jackson shouldn't have praised the Messiah though...I was hoping he was part of the 46% of Natives that voted for McCain-Palin. Whatever, if he's pro-development, sounds good to me (the ADN editorial today called Palin "pro-development"; how can she be pro-development to the ADN and anti-development to the Fagan crow; Palin's adversaries cannot keep their criticisms of her consistent). Watch the dems squirm when she appoints a qualified, uncorrupted Native to the post, heh heh.

Check this story out: http://www.juneaublogger.com/updates/?p=983

Mike Kelley, the guy who Halcro accussed of underhanded tactics with the GVAC coal plant, is pushing a Made in Alaska gun law that allows guns restricted by the federal government to be used and carried if made in Alaska. The Montana legislature is pushing the same thing. Challenge to the federal government's power under the interstate commerce clause?

If AK was to lose out at least it was to Idaho, Sarah's birthplace!

Legal Newsline says that Smith was the more liberal choice than Christen...you might want to provide this as an ongoing update to the Supreme Court appointment post. Christen is sounding more and more like the "old" Kristen Gilbrand, before she became a Senator, in which she was moderate on every issue but abortion. The fact is though we still don't know whether the Smith guy was pro-abortion and if he was, then why not go with Christen?

“Palin has a month and a half to choose the next member of Alaska’s State Supreme Court. The problem is the two choices she has to pick from are justices who don’t align with her conservative views. Alaska’s judges are selected using the Missouri Plan, which combines election and appointment in choosing the judge. The Alaska Judicial Council selects the nominees from which the governor can then make an appointment. A total of six judges applied, but only two were elected by the Judicial Council, Eric Smith, considered very liberal, and Morgan Christen, who is viewed as more of a moderate.”

The Governor should interview all applicants and then make her own decision. And just say, the only fair thing to do is to interview ALL applicants.

This will also send a message that the Juneau closed door politics have ended...

I would love to see approval ratings on the Alaska Legislature. This is despicable. The house definitely needs cleaning.

Greg March 6, 2009 2:50 PM

It would be a smart move for Gov. Palin to pick Jackson, then let the dems try justifying keeping him out. As for the Supreme Court selection, the left wing blogs are all over the story. Of course they are attempting to drive a wedge between Palin and conservatives in general, and pro-life conservatives in particular. They forget that most conservatives don't visit their sites. What I've seen in the comments is is that some previous anti-Palin women are moving in her direction, and the few who identify themselves as conservatives aren't particularly bothered by the selection, since some of them actually did their homework. My prediction is is that the left will drop this issue in a couple of days, just like Ashley Judd and the wolves disappeared rather quickly

The Juneau Dems are no different than the national Dems or Chicago Dems a Dem is just a Dem.... thinking they can portray and spew their devilish intentions as if we are so stupid to accept them. SHAME ON THEM!!!

Stacy,  March 6, 2009 3:31 PM

The Governor should appoint Gordon Jackson, and then file for a restraining order against Beth Kerttula. Just my advice....

Bean Counter,  March 6, 2009 3:42 PM

There's no current open topic so I'll just put this in the newest section. Again, my apologies for being off-topic.

Just finished watching the Media Malpractice DVD, including the 43 min. uncut interview with Sarah.

With apologies to Glenn Beck, wrap your head with duct tape before you watch this film, so that you'll have all the pieces of your skull intact when your head explodes! Because it will, trust me.

God almighty, I can't remember when I've been so furious! This is a landmark piece of investigative reporting. Ziegler's research and documentation is astounding. But what's so brilliant about it is that he gets out of the way and lets the drive by media hang themselves. He nails them with their own words.

Sarah's uncut interview is just what you'd expect it to be -- honest, candid, reflective -- and shows what a good sport she is, her good humor, and her determination that this is not over for her, not by a long shot.

I had a hard time navigating the menu on the DVD, as the selections aren't highlighted when you try to select the different features, but maybe I got a weird copy, but please, buy this DVD, get a copy for a friend, host a viewing party for obamatrons if you know any, but get this out amongst the people in your ADI.

Amazing. Just amazing. Ziegler hit it out of the park.

LindaW,  March 6, 2009 3:55 PM

Bean Counter, when did you order your copy? Can't wait to receive mine. Been waiting for about 2 weeks now. I would like to think that the delay was because of the huge load of backorders. It would be interesting if all journalism classes are required to see this film.

Bean Counter,  March 6, 2009 4:12 PM

Ordered mine just shy of two weeks ago. Was shipped from Sacramento. Got an e-mail yesterday saying mine had shipped, it arrived today.

Good luck getting this shown in any journalism class, but man, it should be required.

I freely admit my bias. I'm a conservative. I am a staunch supporter of Sarah Palin, have been from day one. I've done quite a bit of consulting work with various local media outlets and advertising agencies when I was in state government, so I know how a lot of these guys operate, but I do not see how any remotely fair minded person could watch this film and not be absolutely outraged and afraid for our democracy, when you see how the media clearly influenced this election.

Jenny March 6, 2009 4:31 PM

Bean Counter, thanks for the heads up. I hesitate to order the documentary for the sole reason of not having by blood pressure go through the roof. I worked for a local paper in Northern NJ as a business reporter. It wasn't a fun experience, because the newsroom was full of liberal hacks. You will not believe the amount of insults launched at our President Bush and this was at the height of the Iraq War. The editorial writer thought the NY Times was not liberal enough! Unbelievable.
I already saw the bias in the news and I just don't want to throw a show at my TV screen. I also saw it in Fox News with Obama's butt boy Major Garrett AKA Major A-Hole.

Lorna Marie March 6, 2009 4:56 PM

thanks for the heads up, i got the same email last nite as well! i cannot wait to watch this DVD. my bff in texas who is also a Dem is really anxious to watch MM because she definitely agreed with me about Sarah's treatment and actually said come 2012 if Obama effs up, her vote will go to Sarah.

im gonna wait for the mail man today before i run errands! for heaven's sake i live in CA! that DVD needs to be here already!

davek70 March 6, 2009 4:57 PM

Thanks all for the DVD update. I got the email too and hopefully, it'll be waiting for me in the mail when I get home from work!!

This DVD needs to be shown to the trolls over at HotAir, who in typical fashion in a Palin thread today, came out in full force w/ the MSM/Lib talking points.

Bean Counter,  March 6, 2009 4:57 PM

Jenny, bless your heart for having to endure such abuse at the newspaper.

I have friends who worked at local TV stations here, I'm in a fairly large market, and sometimes I would hang out in the newsroom. You wouldn't believe what goes on during the 6:00 news -- the reporters and producers gather and watch all 3 network affiliates' broadcasts at the same time and hurl insults and obscenities at the screen. It was like being in a frat house.

I also had a bit of interaction with some of the Washington press corps in the 90s, and while most are fairly friendly, they clearly have an "I'm smarter than you" attitude that just made you want to scream or beat the hell out of them.

Not only have things not changed, they've also gotten much worse.

Lorna Marie March 6, 2009 5:40 PM

what!?! he's at it again? after Sarah was there?

Is that whole village populated with gluttonous sloths?

Are they all incapable of moving their pudgy little legs and finding good work? God knows, some of those fatties could use the exercise.

I have NO sympathy for a guy, who obviously wants to suck on Big Government tit the rest of his miserable life. Why doesn't this ass just come out and say what he really wants- MONEY MONEY MONEY!
and by the looks of him, a lifetime supply of whiskey.

"Please, Mrs. Palin you must take care of us for the rest of our lives, because our most recent Gout* outbreak has rendered all of the Elders imcompotent and obese. Oh yeah, could you also pose for a picture with my wife?"

Hell, Mike Huckabee would fit right in with these folks.

Everyone has a fuckin' sob story.

Today I received my copy of Media Malpractice. Just finished watching it. It was great. Well worth $20. Still have my head together, didn't need duct tape.

LindaW,  March 6, 2009 9:48 PM

I live in CA too (southern CA) and I got the email yesterday, so it looks like it'll be in the mail tomorrow! Getting excited! =D Looks like we've got a lot of Californians in here.

Ramrocks March 6, 2009 9:57 PM

Linda and Lorna,

If we don't get our copies tomorrow, I think we should storm Zieg's house. He lives in the area after all.

DIRTY BETH'S CAMPAIGN IRREGULARITIES

(Sorry to re-hash this, there's lots more if you need it)

******************
Web posted Monday, June 7, 1999 Campaign spending was vastly underreported

Powell's wife, Beth Kerttula, did exactly that when she ran for the Juneau House seat during the state primary election immediately preceding the Juneau municipal election. Together, they have changed the face of Juneau politics by their unprecedented embrace of campaign deficit-spending.

Web posted Sunday, June 13, 1999 Powell campaign deserves inquiry

On his seven-day report, filed a week before the election, Powell, whose campaign treasurer was his wife, Rep. Beth Kerttula, reported the $21,000. After a letter of complaint from Fischer to APOC, and after communication from APOC to Powell, treasurer Kerttula apologized to APOC for the oversight and explained that she had not understood that accrued expenses had to be reported. Accrued - those are expenses that have been obligated by the candidate but not yet paid. As a former assistant attorney general, Kerttula's explanation that she did not know the difference is questionable.

http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/061399/Ope_edit.html

**********************************************************************

They disclosed this information 58 days late, 28 days after the election. The APOC staff wrote "the omission was significant and potentially misled the public."

**********************************************************************

Kathleen Harrington, a Democrat on the five-member commission, said the past campaign experience of Powell and his wife, Juneau Rep. Beth Kerttula, was a factor in her desire to raise the fine. Also, she said ``cascading violations'' gave a false impression to Powell's opponent and the public of how much money was spent before election day.

...[ ]violations needed to be presented to the voters in a clear and factual manner before this election, as those facts were not available to the voters before the last election, and that is what I tried to do.

As for Gordon Evans' assertion that the Juneau Empire conducted a "yellow journalism" campaign against Jim, that is just pure baloney.

Democrats unmasked Letter to the editor

Please don't censor entries for the Independence Day parade. It's important for everyone to recognize the true nature of certain political activists and the party they represent. [ ]... perhaps a marcher with a Beth Kerttula mask, a campaign expense report, and a sign saying, "I think I filed."

Reading Kim Metcalfe's letter on this subject is like hearing Beth Kerttula use the words "honest mistake." ...[ ] there was no organized negative campaign consisting of letters to the editor. Some of us simply think that if you cheat and pretend you didn't, then you should get called on it and suffer the consequences. My kids know that. Unfortunately, in Juneau that kind of wrong behavior gets you re-elected.

Gardner said the secrecy may go too far, though, and might protect unethical legislators more than it helps the public.

"I'm very uncomfortable with the whole issue of ethics complaints being confidential, and that's a discussion worth having," she said.

Kerttula agreed.

"Maybe we really need to lift that veil," she said.
