Maverick *Hearts* 'Cuda and Not Hurt About Prayer Story

Politico is apparently hatching up some story about "wounded" McCain staffers who were Palin "loyalists" and are upset by her innocent joke about praying with her seven-year-old daughter before the vice presidential debate.
I don't buy it myself. No one with half a brain would be offended by that cute little anecdote from Palin's Lincoln Day speech -- certainly not a self-proclaimed Palin "loyalist." In fact, I predict that next week Jim Geraghty will call up Randy Scheunemann and Steve Biegun and get them on the record saying that they don't feel slighted in the least. (And those are the only two Palin "loyalists" who I believe were really loyal.)
We already have proof that the Straight Talker-in-chief wasn't hurt by her remarks. That's right. The Maverick himself is quoted in a Washington Times article titled "McCain has only kind words for Palin":
While Sen. John McCain's former vice presidential candidate has criticized his campaign recently for not sharing her religious fervor, the Arizona senator has nothing but kind words for the Alaska governor who electrified Republicans last year.
"Listen, I love and respect Sarah Palin," the 2008 Republican presidential candidate said, speaking softly in an interview Friday with reporters and editors at The Washington Times. "I love her family. I am convinced that her running on the ticket energized the Republican Party in a way that, let's have some straight talk, that I couldn't or didn't."
Mrs. Palin, the self-described "hockey mom" whose evangelical Christianity often played a prominent role in her campaign, got a laugh when she told a Republican audience in Alaska earlier this month that there was "nobody I could find that I wanted to hold hands with and pray" with within the McCain campaign just before her vice presidential debate with then-Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., Delaware Democrat.
The governor later said she meant no disrespect, and Mr. McCain on Friday said he took no offense.
"I just read that in the press about not having someone to pray with in my campaign. Obviously, I was not with her, I was in Denver, as a matter of fact. But I thought she did a great job in that debate. I wish I had done as good a job in my debates as she did," Mr. McCain said.
"I think she's a woman, a person, of great principle. I will always appreciate her friendship. Will I always agree with everything she says? Of course not. She's a very independent person. By the way, she and my daughter are in the same category," he joked, referring to his outspoken daughter, Meghan.
First off, the idea that Palin's innocent joke amounts to her criticizing McCain's campign "for not sharing her religious fervor" is utter and complete nonsense. Once again, listen to it for yourselves, folks:
It was a joke! For the love of peace, it was a joke!
At least, McCain is smart enough to get it (though the cynic in me wonders whether his sudden vocalized affection for Palin might have something to do with his 2010 re-election campaign. Perhaps I'm not the only one who has answered his fundraising emails with: "Sorry, Senator, I gave all my money to SarahPAC.")
The Washington Times also has video of McCain praising Palin.
(For those of you interested in viewing Gov. Palin's entire Lincoln Day speech, you can watch it here. It was an excellent speech, which is why the PDS-stricken media ignored the substance of it and focused on this non-issue of the prayer story.)

It really is baffling to me that one can listen to her story about Piper, and come away with the conclusion that Sarah "criticized his campaign recently for not sharing her religious fervor". If the author is not incompetent or lazy, then it seems as if this is intended to perptuate the notion that Sarah is a religious fanatic.
Thanks, Sarah! YOU DID IT! You talked about all the people who feel disenfranchised and how we need to reach out to them. You DID IT!
Piper's comment made me laugh out loud. LOVE THAT! But the big story in this clip, to me, is what I've been waiting for Sarah to say and that is how we need to reach out to the disenfranchised folks out there and empower them. GOD BLESS YA, SARAH!
I have written to Sarah Palin several times about my mom who had not voted since Carter/Ford and who had NEVER voted GOP.........until Sarah Palin came on the scene. The day after Sarah was introduced as the VP pick in Dayton, my mom went out and registered to vote for the first time since Carter/Ford and she pushed the GOP Ticket button on election day!!! THANKS, SARAH!!!!!!!!!! You gave her faith in government again.
I'm sooooo happy to hear this clip!
Lisa Graas:
Me too! I have never voted GOP until Palin and I have written her to tell her that as well.
Mansour,
Don't tell people to just skip to the 3:35 mark...tell people to watch the part prior to the 3:35 mark. I'm in agreement with Red Stater AKSteveB regarding Palin's discussion on how we can bring in indies/democrats without sacrificing the conservative planks.
Best explanation I've heard from a leader as to how we remain we can broaden the tent of the party but remain a conservative party.
It still amazes me how everyone chooses to miss the point she was making.....the "wisdom of the very old and the very young". The fact that the child had been TAUGHT about what it means to be fair & honest is a fact that should not be ignored.
This story is taking on a life of its own. Strange how someone can twist a person's words and then that meme spreads like wildfire.
Sarah will have to make a statement at some point to clear up what she meant. She may once again make lemonade out of lemons.

Glenn Beck speaks often about how many of us are feeling disenfranchised and powerless these days. That is why he started his We Surround Them movement. His ratings prove people are responding to that message.
The bright side of this is that more people will be aware of and listen to Sarah's Lincoln Day Speech. I guess that's why they say any publicity is good publicity. People may even decide for themselves that the MSM's spin on Sarah's remarks is wrong.
What is the real truth behind the rumors that were spread about Sarah right after the election?
1)the MSM completely made them up out of whole cloth-there were no anonymous sources
2)if there were anonymous sources, they were very low-level staffers who have an axe to grind, just hate Sarah for her religion or her pro-life stance, got paid to make up false stories or have an agenda of rheir own
3)John McCain was behind all these rumors
4)Meghan McCain was one of the main anonymous sources
5)as rumored by pundits the anonymous sources were high-level staffers bitter about losing the election and blaming Sarah for the loss
Is there a transcript for that speech anywhere? That video is terrible, and the audio has an echo. I'm having a hard time hearing all of it, but if I'm hearing correctly, Governor Palin is saying that a conservative candidate can attract Democrats and Independents by being honest about who you are and what you stand for.
This PalinDemocrat agrees with that. On the heels of these bailouts and pork filled stimulus bills, smaller government and lower taxes sounds like an excellent proposition.
But I also think that as more of the deception of our current elected officials and the MSM becomes clear, people are going to be in the mood to vote for a candidate willing to tell them the truth, even if they disagree with the majority of their policies.
As far as the anecdote about Piper, most Christians or anybody familiar with biblical teachings will understand her point. Prayer is a very private thing, and you're not going to grab the first person who comes down the pike to share it with unless you're just doing it for show. I don't have any qualms about praying for someone else in a public setting. But when praying for myself, I prefer solitude or the company of someone that I am close to and familiar with.
Most of the people who don't understand this instinctively aren't going to get it with any amount of explanation.
This whole faux story about Palin insulting the McCain campaign is a direct reaction to John McCain making this statement:
"Over 50 million people voted for me and Sarah Palin - mostly for Sarah Palin,"
John McCain was right when he made this statement. The media is attempting to change the headline.
The media and Allahpundit may be able to change the headline, but they cannot change the reality.
The reality is that over 60 million people voted for Sarah Palin (and John McCain), but mostly Sarah Palin.
Those 60 million people will not quickly forget Sarah Palin, but they will quickly forget the headline.
Well, if this is the story that Ms. Mansour was wriing about, it isn't about the prayer issue:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0309/20603.html
Rather, it is a story about GOPers ripping Palin for having a team that "couldn't shoot straight." The main beef appears to be that sha has two teams that don't communicate, and the AK team is focused on AK. The sources and writers fail to acknowledge, if they even understand, that her AK team is FORBIDDEN BY LAW from engaging in partisan political activities.
We will continue to see stories like this until the Governor decides whether she is going to run for President and how she intends to structure her campaign.
This is OT, but Michelle Malkin's post today is worth the read: http://michellemalkin.com/2009/03/29/why-are-madeleine-k-albright-and-nancy-pelosi-e-mailing-me/
Two questions: Where are they getting the funds to match 2-to-1? and Did they think they would get anything more than maybe a used tea bag from Michelle?
I agree with K. Carpenter, the MSM is just trying to knock McCain's admission out of the news. When that hit the net, someone decided that they'd listen to the Lincoln Day event and see if he or she could find something that was said there that a story could be made of, and he or she settled on this non-story.
BTW, someone in TS emailed me yesterday and said said that when she was at CPAC she had been told by a CPAC organizer that over 1500 people cancelled when they heard that Palin wasn't going to be there.
Hi, Everyone,
Whew, various duties draw me away for circa three days, and I find that so much has happened!! I love this site, but wow does it rush by!
Here are a few random thoughts from the last couple of days:
Dream for 2013: US President Sarah Palin meets with British PM Daniel Hannan!!
I saw the map/graphic on Hannity's show the other day: the possible course of a North Korean missile: aimed right at...Alaska!!! I couldn't help but think: yes, the foreign Commies have their literal missiles trained on Sarah; the Commies in our own country have missiles of other kinds focused on her...and on us.
Therefore, as Lent moves into Passiontide, I would urge the spiritually-minded among our ranks to make hidden sacrifices to protect Sarah, her State, and our nation. I think even the tiniest sacrifice, of a licit or an illicit pleasure, for example, can have a powerful effect of erecting a spiritual, and yes a physical, shield around Sarah. It is time to draw the sword of the spirit, fight for Sarah and for America...and throw away the scabbard...
BTW, guys, I am thinking of setting up a table for Sarah in 2012 in Sproul Plaza, that is, right in the heart of the UC Berkeley campus. I know that, at best, I will take some obscene gestures and words...very possibly stones or rotten eggs, etc. Still, what a place to take a stand for Sarah...and for FREE SPEECH, something the "liberal" fascists despise. It was in Sproul Plaza in Berkeley, after all, that the free-speech movement was born ca. 1964. Anyway, I know this is a few years away, but I might be looking for a few hardy souls to join me in campaigning for Sarah in 2012 right in the "heart of the beast"!!
God bless you all!!
Sarah Nostra Pulchra Pugnaxque!!
Sarah 2012!!

I have to disagree with RA slightly on one thing here: I'm no Freudian in general, but I think he was on to something when he declared, "There's no such thing as a joke." Or as Jesus says in Luke 6, "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." None of this means that Gov. Palin is attacking the McCain campaign or that her comment by the way was intended as a criticism, or indeed that the whole flap is anything more than a ridiculous little storm in a very small teapot; but I do think it's a revealing comment for all that.
Clearly, there are those who served the McCain campaign with whom she would have been happy to pray, or else she wouldn't have looked around in the first place; but just as clearly, there were a lot more with whom she wasn't that close, whom she didn't feel she could trust enough to pray with. Which isn't news, of course--it's just additional confirmation of a picture we've already built up pretty clearly from other sources--but is worth noting, nonetheless.
I wanted to say this on the other Mccain post but something ate my post up. say what you want about him, he's a patriot. He's slowly realized what damage Obama is inflicting on the country he loves and has come to appreciate the zeal of Sarah to fight Obama. HE now realizes that Sarah was right in not buying into phony hopenchange meme. Most of all, he realizes his straight-talk, maverick image earned him nothing, a life long penchant of beating your side to earn marks with the other hasn't earned him any good will. His indifference was returned by indifference by the base and he saw the same base go giddy with excitement about Sarah, who never cared much for the MSM.
He also knows that if the country he loves has to be saved from utter devastation, the only hope is Sarah. Whatever his political calculations, I think there is a core of decency to the man and that can't be denied. Whatever be his long list of mistakes, he gave us Sarah and he deserves our gratitude for that.
Well, is she a religious zealot or not? Doesn't she coerce people into her "Christianist" practicesez?? Oh noez, meme no worky!
I agree, wisetrog: I shall always be grateful to McCain for introducing Sarah to America!

Hey, looking at that video again makes me think she has lot a bit of perpetual sunniness and is in just warrior mode these days, isn't she? She should give out some relaxed vibes.
I hate to be a cyncial political operative but does anybody really believe that McCain would be talking about Sarah now in such glowing terms in public if not for her continuing popularity and her huge fundraising through SarahPAC?
To embrace Sarah now, McCain is basically saying that his handlers are full of s**t for spreading false rumors about her after the election and that he may face a primary challege from a conservative in 2010 and he doesn't want Sarah supporting his potential challenger, but backing him.
Greg @ 8:32am:
Thanks for the info from the TS member regarding 1500 people cancelling CPAC b/c Sarah cancelled out. That shows you she is a magnet for any event. People are willing to fork out the money to see her because for the first time in a long time, we have the most down-to-earth politician ever poised to become our first female president.
McCain on Meet the Press today would not go as far to back Sarah for the Presidency in 2012. He is still hedging his bets.
techno, it would be foolish to endorse her for presidency this far out when she has not even declared she's running ! There are always political considerations, after all they are politicians but that doesn't mean he doesn't mean when he says he loves and respects her.
Every time I read about this supposed insult it amazes me how people will use any instances to bash Palin.
When did it become an insult to want to pray with someone who shares your beliefs? People have differing ways of praying - eveyone doesn't consider it a casual act. I wonder if those anonymous offended Palin staffers had ever indicated interest in praying with her?
When I heard that she would not be able to come, which was kind of prefaced by that press release she gave before she went to the Alfalfa dinner, yet another detail left out of the Politico piece. I vacilated on whether not to go, but I had never been to D.C. Everything I saw there, confirmed
that she was the leading figure in the movement. I only found
one doubter, and he'll probably
eventually come around.
I couldn't understand the audio. What was Piper's response at the end?
"But Mommy, that would be cheating!"
Brianus,
I've missed your heady observations the past few days.
You are a brave man indeed to consider setting up an I heart Palin booth in Berkeley of all places! Whether it's Lent when you set up in 2012 or not, you are sure to be tortured by the rabble!
Bitterus Clingum
Thanks, bitterclinger. I guess my mother's death in '07, and my brother's battle with cancer (he is still in his 40's) have reminded me of the fragility of life. I figure, "Why hold back?" We love Sarah, and it is time to put ourselves on the line for her and for our country!!
