Meghan McCain Fires Shots At Ann Coulter

Reading Meghan McCain's columns over at The Daily Beast is like watching Mystery Science Theater 3000. The movie, or in this case an article, is just so bad that you can't help but watch it.

The most recent contribution by McCain may be the worst:

It is no secret that being a Republican isn’t the most hip political stance a person can take right now. President Obama has successfully established himself as the hippest politician around. You know you’re big when Katy Perry wears a dress with your face on it to host the MTV Europe Music Awards. To my fellow Republicans: I’m sorry, I wish I could be more positive about the current “hipness” of our party. But being a Republican is about as edgy as Donny Osmond. Granted, being “hip” is not a reason to join a political party, or a reason to agree with its ideals. But it is a way to get the attention of a generation—or, more specifically, my generation.

I don't know how to respond to this. [R. A. Mansour: I do. Tell me how "hip" Carter was by 1980?]

McCain:

And what was [Ann Coulter] thinking when she said Hillary Clinton was more conservative than my father during the last election? If you truly have the GOP’s best interests at heart, how can you possibly justify telling an audience of millions that a Democrat would be a better leader than the Republican presidential candidate?

[...]

I’m often criticized for not being a “real” Republican, and I have been called a RINO—Republican In Name Only—in the past. Many say I am not “conservative enough,” which is something that I am proud of. It is no secret that I disagree with many of the old-school Republican ways of thinking. One of the biggest issues from which I seem to drift from the party base is in my support of gay marriage. I am often criticized for previously voting for John Kerry and my support of stem-cell research. For the record, I am also extremely pro-military and a big supporter of the surge and the Iraq war.

[...]

Maybe Coulter's popularity stems from the fact that watching her is sometimes like watching a train wreck.

- So, you are a huge supporter of the Iraq War, yet you voted for John Kerry in 2004. I guess the only time a Republican is not allowed to support a Democrat is when the Republican candidate is Meghan's father. Gotcha.

- Stem-cell research occurs in the United States. So does human embryonic stem-cell research. The only difference between most liberals and conservatives is that conservatives do not want the federal government funding it. (And many conservatives find human embryonic stem-cell research immoral because it involves harvesting human embryos for destruction.)

- Coulter is popular because people enjoy watching a train wreck? Your recent columns are similar to a train wreck and you are not "popular." Try again.

McCain:

I am sure most extreme conservatives and extreme liberals would find me a confusing, walking contradiction. But I assure you, there are many people out there just like me who represent a new, younger generation of Republicans. It took me almost two years of campaigning across this country and hanging out, on a daily basis, with some of the most famous and most intelligent Republicans to fall in love with the Republican Party. If it took that much time and exposure for me to join the party, how can GOP leaders possibly expect to reach young supporters by staying the course they have been on these past eight years? Where has our extreme thinking gotten us? President Bush will go down as one the least popular presidents in history. I constantly hear stories about Republicans who previously worked for President Bush and my father feeling ostracized, unable to get jobs in D.C. right now. [emphasis added]

McCain represents a "new generation of Republicans"? Really? Her column regarding the problems she sees within the GOP begins with a pop singer wearing a picture of Obama on her dress! She also has yet to explain where she stands on any important issue other than gay marriage.

Awww, Republicans can't get jobs in Washington, D.C.

Hey, Meghan, the Republicans in Washington, D.C. are the problem!

Of all the problems plaguing the GOP right now, being "hip" is not something I find to be the most pertinent.

Good lord she's tough to read.

davek70 March 9, 2009 12:01 PM

I saw this and posted response at HotAir. Since when did "I can't get a date" Meghan McCain become a spokesperson for the "younger GOP voters"? If, according to Meghan, the younger GOP voters want to be like Frum, Brooks, and Noonan, then I think they need a new spokesperson. Hell, that 14 year old kid Johnathan Khron (sp?) is a better spokesperson for the GOP and conservatives than the lovely Meghan, LOL!!!

I told AP and Ed to stop wasting bandwidth on her.

OT: Is something wrong w/ the twitter notifications here? I'm not getting them anymore as of last night.

History Chasers March 9, 2009 12:03 PM

Well, I think I know now where those stories about Sarah Palin's clothes buying sprees came from and why John McCain was so reluctant to root out the culprit. His own daughter!!!

This girl is silly, silly, silly. Does she have a job or go to school? She obviously has too much time on her hands.

She should just own up and get out of the Republican party. She certainly is a RINO and we don't need any more of those.

We are reaping the whirlwind of a hip young president being elected by a bunch of first time, only time voters. Of course they had a right to vote. I just wish they had looked further than a pop star's dress for inspiration.

This administration is going to fizzle out. It already has in less than half of the first 100 days.

Then I hope a worthy candidate is in the wings ready to assume the position of governing this country in a respectful mature manner. (You don't have to be old to be mature). And you don't have to be young to be cool.

Meghan McCain is a little rich girl living off of mommy's fortune who hasn't had to work a day in her life. She whines because she can't get a date. WHO CARES! Obviously she has no clue what goes on in the real world. She thinks because her daddy is a senator that I care what she thinks as well.

Julie,  March 9, 2009 12:21 PM

I agree History Chasers. Meghan needs a job. I see her as some cheesy hostess on MTV or VH1-most likely in the post-midnight time slots.

I don't think Columbia-educated Meghan could delienate the history of the Republican party better than any pencil-selling homeless person on the street.

The Republican Party may not truly be able to "right" itself until we see the vestiages of both GWB and McCain and their policies/beliefs.

Bean Counter,  March 9, 2009 12:28 PM

Geez, Meghan, how's that noble "move to the center" thing been working out for the GOP, huh? Man, we're killing them at the ballot box, aren't we?

The more intellectually honest thing to do would be for you and your father, who I do respect as a great American, but not as a REPUBLICAN presidential candidate, to just call yourselves democrats and be done with it.

"Progressive republican" is an oxymoron as far as I'm concerned.

Jenny March 9, 2009 12:38 PM

Meghan is worse than David Frum. Let me explain: She is given a platform to speak for young conservatives. McCain is nothing of the sort. She only became a republican to vote for her father, show some solidarity. She is an absent-minded woman. I would bet if her father didn't run, she would vote for Obama because 'it's cool!' She has no idea what her principles are nor what she truly believes in. Maybe if she began to actually read books, especially Ann Coulter's books, she'll learn something.

Cynthia,  March 9, 2009 12:43 PM

She represents "a new kind of Republican?" They're called Democrats, Meghan, and I suggest you register as one.

Bean Counter,  March 9, 2009 12:47 PM

About Coulter -- is she a bomb thrower, yes. Is she over the top, yes. But her arguments are bulletproof. I've got most all of her books and they're well written and documented out the wazoo. She makes me cringe sometimes with some of the things she says, but dang it, she's RIGHT!

She's right and the commie libs KNOW she's right, so all they can do is try and take her down with personal attacks, because they can't counter her arguments.

I wonder sometimes why she finds it necessary to be so controversial, but if she just presented her positions without all the fireworks, nobody would pay attention to her. She'd be ignored. At least she gets her licks in by being so "colorful."

Okie Boy,  March 9, 2009 1:05 PM

If you don't allow posts as 'Anonymous' then why is it an option?

McCain is old news, she's just another 'Gnat' that Gov Palin will have to deal with in the years to come (hopefully beginning 1-20-13).

K. Carpenter March 9, 2009 1:06 PM

I am trying not to be hard on Meghan. She is young and trying to be cool like her friends and still support her father.

Problem is, you do not go after Ann Coulter, for heaven's sake. Ann will just destroy this young woman.

Meghan McCain will learn from this mistake. My guess is that Meghan has been pushed into this by some of her young hip liberal friends. They hate Ann so much, but they do not know how to fight her.

I do not know about you guys, but this is pretty typical of a person her age. If I am being honest, I was a lot more liberal when I was younger.

My poor conservative father could not talk his pig headed daughter out calling herself an "independent".

Then I grew up. Life is funny that way. As soon as I realized I did not have all of the answers and life had kicked me around a little bit, I became a staunch conservative. There is just something about busting your tail and finding out that the government still owns you, that makes most of us smarten up.

Hopefully Meghan learns quickly.

Go over to the Hot Air blog and take the poll 'Who is the leader of the leader of the Republican party'? and support Sarah.

Sarah is currently leading but it is still very early.

You know it's almost unsporting of us, to go after Meghan McCain, she really has no history of political involvement, her new 'associates' at the "Daily Beast" don't
appreciate her. She felt upset personally because Coulter hadcriticized her father, well that's well within her right, not that it matters any. She has been unwilling to stick up for Sarah since the election; so that automatically makes her almost irrelevant to any conversation.

Joseph Russo March 9, 2009 2:12 PM

As a 22 year old, I don't believe that she speaks for my generation of Republicans.

I have been saying all along that the media will adopt her as the "voice of young Republicans"

Young Republicans are a rare breed and Meghan McCain is no spokesperson for us.

In fact, she damages us

adagioforstrings March 9, 2009 2:14 PM

Ditto, This 20 year old college student doesn't consider Meghan as a spokesman or a representative for young conservatives or young republicans for that matter.

TommyReport,  March 9, 2009 2:29 PM

Off-topic but did some of you know that Sean Parnell served as the
Chair of Romney's Alaska campaign (I recall Romney finishing first by a wide margin in the Alaska caucus with Ron Paul second, Obama won the Alaska caucus easily for the dems)? Romney didn't endorse Parnell in his race against Don Young. Isn't it surprising that Club for Growth got so heavily behind Parnell considering that they haven't been one of 'Cuda's biggest backers...I suppose that could be explained by the fact that they absolutely hated Young and Stevens (I would assume Lisa Murkowski isn't their favorite politician either).

A little surprised that Parnell took such an active role in Republican's campaign during the primaries (not that Alaska was central to Romney's strategy) considering that his boss stayed clear of all that stuff pre-VP days.

TommyReport,  March 9, 2009 2:33 PM

My hatred for online, unscientific polling grows by the day...since the question asks who is the "current" leader of the GOP, I probably wouldn't cast my vote for 'Cuda if I didn't hate such polls. I'm with Tammy Bruce on her analysis as to why conservatives don't have "leaders" (e.g., our ideas are based on individuals rather than demographic groups). I'm sorry to see Hotair and Ed play such games with online polling.

Here's an update on the HA poll:

Sarah Palin (20%) 277 votes

Michael Steele (12%) 172

Rush Limbaugh (8%) 111

Bobby Jindal (4%) 53

No one: (47%) 662

davek70 March 9, 2009 2:54 PM

I voted for Sarah w/ this comment....

No one can deny she is the front runner to BE the leader right now if she chooses to do so. I am hoping for that obviously.

And Techno's analysis over there was spot on!!

Torrey,  March 9, 2009 2:56 PM

For the record I am 27 and Meghan McCain does not speak for me. Personally, I would be interested in finding out what (if anything that she likes about the Republican party. It just sound like she is very confused and angry that father lost the election. On another note didn't she once think Sarah was cool. If she really wants to see how hip the Republican party is becoming she should check out the "All eyes on Me" that alex raye made.

5)Bobby Jindal (4%) 70

Even w/ the Palin haters at HA, I have a feeling that poll will not even be close.

LAW,  March 9, 2009 5:21 PM

Gee Meghan, I support stem-cell research, too. I don't support embryonic stem cell research though. I can't wrap my mind around trading one life for another.

Lorna Marie March 9, 2009 5:28 PM

ughhh meghan!!!! shaaaaatupppppp!!!

this 25 year old doesn't want you as her totally like hip young republican spokeswoman.

MWN,  March 9, 2009 6:32 PM

I enjoyed Meghan's blog during the campaign. The behind-the-scenes photos were great.

Her Dad has been knocked around by right-wingers for years, and I'm sure that's hard to take, especially with people like Coulter who can be pretty acerbic.

Plus, she's young. To paraphrase Winston Churchill: Anyone under 30 who's not a liberal has no heart. Anyone over 30 who's not a conservative has no brain.

LindaW,  March 9, 2009 8:25 PM

I've been where she is, so I understand where she's coming from, however, she sounds like a brat. She should label herself as Independent or Democrat again, but she is definitely not a Republican. She should quit trying to change the party if she doesn't like their ideologies and fade away with her father.

Sapwolf March 9, 2009 11:06 PM

I knew Meghan was a liberal. That was so obvious even long before McCain picked Sarah.

But frankly, based on the last few months, it wouldn't surprise me if she was one of the traitors that spread some lies about Sarah.

Think of it. Why is she saying nothing about it? Why is McCain saying nothing? Because his own daughter did it because she is a liberal. Sarah is pro-life, and Meghan is not. She probably soured on Sarah once she found out that Sarah was your western libertarian/conservative.

Sarah may have voiced some questions as to the poor strategy they took given that she in fact had more experience campaigning than the team that handled her. This was probably frustrating.

Speculation, but does make some sense.

Sapwolf March 9, 2009 11:09 PM

WAFORPALIN,

You are spot on!

As the great theologian Yoda says:

"Spoiled Rich brat are you."

Nat Hound,  March 9, 2009 11:35 PM

Piper has more political sense at 7 years old than Meghan McCain will have in the course of her entire life combined. Meghan, use some of Cindy's money to buy a clue...

R. A. Mansour March 10, 2009 1:24 AM

You know, Sap, you may be onto something. It's not really fair to speculate (but what the hell? When has anyone ever treated Palin fairly?), but I have the feeling that whoever backstabbed Palin got 30 pieces of silver for it. And who from the McCain campaign do we see now with plum television and print gigs? Wallace is all over the place...

And how did Meghan McCain get a gig writing for Tina Brown?

Think of it this way: MSNBC offered a tv gig to Ron Reagan, Jr., not Michael Reagan -- though Michael has written more and has been giving good radio commentary for years now. In fact, it's sad to me that Michael Reagan isn't more popular because everytime I happen to catch his show (which is difficult to do because it plays on so few stations at such odd hours), I'm always impressed.

Dee March 10, 2009 2:23 AM

How to put this simply? She's an idiot, just like her father. The only reason I was sad on election day was because Sarah Palin lost. The only reason I'm glad that Obama won is that I don't have to defend McCain for the next 4 years and McCain is too old to run again. If his daughter has any future in our party, God help us all!!!!!!

richie March 12, 2009 6:00 AM

i spent a few moments reading some of these comments and it really is no wonder that the republican party is so weak. you're all hanging on to a party that is trying to govern a country that doesn't exist anymore. i didn't think i would find a lot of rational thinking on a site dedicated to an embarrassment, but to believe that you're old tired rhetoric is a solution to 21st century problems is borderline insane. i'm a progressive and for all i care, bicker your selves away into irrelevant jokes. like frum said in his latest newsweek article, as long as my generation eats right and exercises and wears it's seatbelts, we'll be voting against george W. for 50 years. imagine all the good we could get done in that amount of time.
