Caroline Kennedy Denied as Vatican Ambassador
The Telegraph reports that Caroline Kennedy has been turned down as U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, as a result of her pro-abortion views.
Commentary from Dan Riehl and Moe Lane.
I know that this isn't strictly related to the putative subject of this blog, but we're currently working up a post on the Alaska parental consent law and Governor Palin's judicial appointment philosophy. In any case, it's a clear message that the Vatican is taking a harder line with pro-abortion "Catholic" politicians like Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi. It remains to be seen if this will gain significant traction with the Catholic electorate by 2010/2012.
UPDATE: More commentary at Hot Air. And an editorial comment from me -- regardless of your position on abortion, how politically tone-deaf is it to propose an abortion proponent to the Vatican ambassadorship? I guess it would be roughly equivalent to appointing a Jewish-American as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia...acceptable in the eyes of Americans, but guaranteed to cause offense in the eyes of the other nation.
UPDATE II: Obama supporters at Lean Left call the Vatican a "theocratic joke country" and propose Al Sharpton as Vatican Ambassador.
Lean Left should probably consider that there are almost 70 million Catholics in the United States - including that Hispanic electorate that Obama is so desperately courting.
UPDATE by RAM: Here's a little flashback to a Newsmax article from last September titled, "Vatican Official: Palin 'Dream' for Pro-Lifers":
Sarah Palin's firm opposition to abortion and her status as a mother of five prompted a Vatican official to describe the Republican vice president nominee as a "dream candidate."
"I couldn't be more happy," a U.S. church official at the Vatican told Newsmax on the condition of anonymity. "She is, in many ways, a dream candidate, at least among Americans here."
As an American Catholic, I couldn't agree more.

Wow. Caroline uh, uh, you know, Kennedy just can't get a break, you know?
As a Catholic, I'm thrilled to see the Church is finally showing some moral authority about this. I'm not holding my breath to see which entity the politicians pick, though.
First the Notre Dame graduation ceremony controversy and now Caroline, uh, Kennedy DENIED as ambassador to the Vatican.
Is the sleeping giant (the Catholic Church) stirring, and ready to awake out of its post-John Paul II slumber to oppose the infanticide president? As a Catholic, I pray it will be so.
Obama is really trying to get Caroline Kennedy a job. I guess she is still unemployed.
But it is nice to see the Catholic Church coming out strong. They are Walking the Walk and standing tall.
Happy Easter to all....
Now, when is the president and key administration at the University of Notre Dame going to wake up and smell the roses? If the Vatican (i.e., the Pope) can turn down President Obama three times, why can't Notre Dame do it just once?
As our favorite Governor would say, "It's time to 'walk the walk,' not just 'talk the talk.'"
Um, did you say "desperately" courting? Do you know what desperate means? Rather tha desperately courting, you should have said "very successfully courted" -- past tense . (News flash: the elewction was last November, and Obama won decisively.)
You Don't Know Jack,
VO is referring to Obama's efforts, among other things, for amnesty.
Duh
It's good to hear the Vatican stand up to Obama. I think in the coming decade or two we're going to see a strong resistance against the rise of anti-Christianity. The differences in society are becoming clearer.
Thanks for the information. Ditto with the opinion "about time" someone is standing up for our Catholic values and standing behind reinforcing it.
Has there been a decision about Obama and Notre Dame yet?
Othe than JFK who in the Kennedy extended family would have or would make the best POTUS?
1)RFK
2)Teddy Kennedy
3)Kathleen Kennedy Townsend
4)Joe Kennedy (died in WW II)
5)JFK Jr.
I'd say Joe Kennedy, RFK sadly showed too much naivete in too many areas
Jean:
So far, the Notre Dame president --following the lead of his faculty committee which originally recommended inviting Obama -- has dug in his heels on the issue. However, since the day he publicly declared he would not change his mind, the opposition has been mounting steadily:
* Exactly two weeks ago, a petition was started urging Notre Dame to rescind the offer to Obama. As of earlier today, the total number of signees has surpassed 260,000. You can sign the petition at the Web site, www.notredamescandal.com
* A coalition of Notre Dame student organizations established the Web site and initiated the petition. The Web site has more info about the groups and their position as well as what others are saying.
* Approximately 19 Catholic bishops have come out publicly and strongly against the Obama appearance. Included is the Bishop of Fort Wayne and South Bend (Ind.), host bishop for Notre Dame, who stated he is boycotting the graduation ceremony if Obama comes. Also on the list is the very influential Cardinal George of Chicago, currently head of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops.
* A recent survey said nearly 75 percent of Notre Dame alumni across the country are against Obama speaking and receiving an honorary degree. Although many student organizations have taken a strong stand against Obama's appearance, the number of students in favor of it is about the same percentage as the number of alumni against it.
* Personal Opinion: If the Catholic hierarchy doesn't convince the Notre Dame president to change his mind, I think the way it will happen (if it occurs) is if some very influential, wealthy alumni put their foot down with the University's board of directors or trustees.
Hope this is helpful to you.
Wow. you know, this will, you know, not bode well for, umm, uh, Caroline's, uh, you know, Kennedy's thingamabob. Her, you know, resume.
