Fringe Nutcase Leah Burton: Palin AG Pick Led Secret Pro-Rape Cabal; UPDATE: Letter from WAR Added

Scroll down for updates!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday, when I saw allegations floating around the Alaska nutroots blogosphere that Wayne Anthony Ross, Palin's designee as Alaska Attorney General, had made comments in favor of rape and domestic violence, I just laughed and dismissed it as not worth answering.

However, Shannyn Moore plastered the allegations up on the Huffington Post, and Sean Cockerham, whose employer at the Anchorage Daily News is always anxious to investigate wacky Palin conspiracy theories, posted on the "story" at the ADN in-house blog. So we should probably do some vetting of Leah Burton.

You can read Burton's allegations at Cockerham's blog entry, but in a nutshell she says that, back in 1991, she was in a Denny's restaurant and overhead WAR make comments in favor of rape and domestic violence. She has no proof other than her own word, and no other witnesses (of course).

Who is Leah Burton? She's a kook that thinks Christians want to take over the world and impose Biblical law on everyone. She runs a couple of websites that can be found here and here, and she describes her occupation as "life coach." She doesn't even live in Alaska anymore, but in Washington state.

Apparently she has aspirations as an author - she wrote an e-book about her experiences as a life coach (featuring endorsements from a pilot and a dentist). She now has another book that she's trying to flog (apparently not too successfully, its sales rank on Amazon is somewhere below 2 million) - a book she admits she was trying to get out before the election to surf the tide of popular interest in Governor Palin.

Burton has described herself as "hands down" an Obama supporter, and her blogs contain screed after screed about evil Christians, including that horrible Rick Warren who spoke at Obama's inauguration.

In one splendid bit of irony, she wrote an article which asked:

Do You Have to be Male to Practice Misogyny?

Do you have to be female to be a feminist?

The answer to both is a resounding NO!!

But is it really necessary to Eat Our Own?

It's so ironic because, among other things, she's published entries which refer to Governor Palin as a "country bumpkin" and Ann Coulter as a transsexual.

If not for the fact that she was bashing Palin, this woman would get no attention at all. I'm sure the legislators will dismiss her as a tinfoil-hat conspiracy theorist, but the nutroots will get all the play they can out of this while they can.

UPDATE by RAM: I've been reading through this lady's blog, and let me tell ya... this is vintage fruitloopery.

She thinks all the Christians in America are part of a "Dominionist Movement" plotting to take over the country and turn it into... I don't know -- the creepy country depicted in Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" I guess.

She
defines "Dominionists" for us:

Definition: Dominionists seek influence and control over secular civil government, through political action and spiritual warfare with a theocratic mandate to forcefully impose "biblical law" as the ONLY law of the land, and that the U.S. Supreme Court and U.S. Constitution should be seen as a vehicle for implementing Biblical principles.

She calls Rick Warren "one of the TOP leaders in the Dominionsm Movement." She claims that he's a liar:

It is not an honest man who prides himself on being a "stealth dominionist". It is not an honest man who uses the horrific conditions of others to gain popularity and acceptance, yet furthers an End Times agenda "under the radar".

"Under the radar" seems to be a favorite phrase of hers to describe this secret cabal of Christians. I half expect her to accuse them of meeting in catacombs to practice cannibalism and plot the burning of Rome.

Sarah Palin
is apparently the high priestess of this cult:

The machine behind Palin is irreverent and arrogant in their sanctimonious views. We all need to educate ourselves as they pride themselves on "flying under the radar". These are their phrases, not mine.

And the frightening reality is that they ARE under our radar because the realities associated with this machine are so unbelievable…and so appalling…that our rational minds cannot wrap around their agendas.

She calls Sarah Palin their "Poster Girl" who will "push to turn our democracy into a theocracy."

But, of course, no one sees the threat but our tinfoil-hat heroine:

They number in the millions, and scholars spend countless hours, days, and weeks talking about them. But no one - NO ONE - is yet to connect the dots. I am confident that those of you who come to my blog will read this and educate yourselves about what I am posting, but the issue is not that there aren't a number of sites on the net to learn about this.

But don't worry, folks, she's not crazy...

I know that I walk a fine line of being viewed as an alarmist, hence the necessity of making this an ongoing discussion, and a lengthy one. My sources and research are credible, and it is my fervent hope that what I impart here is taken with the utmost sincerity.

Sure. Absolutely. Very credible. Now might I suggest that you take your meds.

UPDATE by VO: Ross has responded to the allegations with a letter of his own. I encourage you to read it - I guarantee that conservatives will enjoy it. The guy does not write like a weaselly mush-mouthed politician.

UPDATE by Mel: The governor answered a couple of questions about WAR during her press conference today. Video below (starting at the 3:50 mark)

UPDATE by VO: KTVA reports Ross' response when asked about this in his confirmation hearing:

A letter former Public Safety Commissioner Richard Burton's daughter, Leah Burton, wrote to lawmakers turned into one of the most contentious points.

She says in 1991 she heard a group of men talking, including Ross, saying domestic violence "wouldn't be an issue if women would learn to keep their mouth shut."

Then Rep. Carl Gatto,R-Palmer, asked about this part of Burton's letter, "Do you recall ever making a statement it's OK for a man to rape his wife?"

"Anybody said that to me then we'd have a little confrontation. Because that's a bunch of crap," Ross replied.

UPDATE by VO: Further developments on this story here.

Hmmm so I wonder if this is the "Lady" that pops in here occationally?

Greg April 10, 2009 11:49 AM

Sounds like more tin foil hat type stuff to me. More and more it seems that the 0bama operatives are just slinging as much mud as they can in an attempt to get something, anything, to stick. So far, they haven't gotten much bang for their buck, as most of their crude attempts have been debunked time and time again. Watch how fast everything they try disappears, usually a couple day story at best, circulated mainly among those who wouldn't vote for Palin under any circumstances anyway.

I see Lilly Tomlin is now trying to get some attention by attacking Palin on the "wolf front." Just goes to show you, if you want to revive a dead or dying career, attack Palin, and the media will give you a platform.

wisetrog April 10, 2009 12:05 PM

VO, good job on debunking. These whackos seem to be getting ever more desperate. If they'd stuck to one conspiracy theory, even one cribbed from Desperate Housewives, one would give them credence, if only as ravings of poorly-informed minds, but the production of a conspiracy theory to match every news alert takes the mystery away and makes them just boring. It's becoming almost, dare I say it, mechanical .

VO, thanks for slumming these troll-sites. You are a brave man.

ADN :Does anyone have any info on WAR?

Leah Burton: Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who heard WAR talk about Rape at Denny's last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

ADN: Thank you, Leah.

Leah Burton: No problem whatsoever.

pgsquared April 10, 2009 1:01 PM

Unfortunately, some moron will give credence to whatever this woman says. What a world, huh!

narciso April 10, 2009 1:03 PM

We knew the A.D. News had no integrity, for at least 7 months now, but this takes the cake, it's
as irresponsible as a major Chicago
paper, publishing that Larry Sinclair character. Than again, we're not surprised at all.

K. Carpenter April 10, 2009 1:08 PM

I do not understand why the ADN would even consider posting something like this. It is articles like this that shows the ADN has no credibility.

Another contribution to SarahPAC -in Leah Burton's name! Yeehaw!

V.O.

Burton cites John Grames in the letter.

I have talked with John in the past about his case on inheritance issues and other cases.

And John did attend DAD meetings early on. The group never filled a Denny's backroom as described by Burton.

John is an "unconvential" guy who ran as a Green candidate and views the Mother Earth in relgious terms.

I wouldn't be surprised if John would come out with a statement on this since his name is attached.

As for Ross saying what she alledges. No

Others in the room? Maybe...

A good friday to you.

As people look at Burton's background, people will put her in that fringe category as you have headline.

Iceman said: Besides; it's not possible to rape your wife. Your wife is your own property... you can do what you want with her.

Excuse me?

Please redact that comment.

upinak April 10, 2009 2:06 PM

akicetard....

You know.. the same can be said for stupid men who obviously are the property of the women. But I won't go there. So I am going to ask the Moderators of this blog to delete you.

Ross IS a good guy, but women aren't property. Alaska isn't a muslim state you stupid fark!

akiceman,

you can crawl back into that cave you crawled out of.

I have been in Alaska politics for years! And since you think women are property you have no say so to speak to me or anyone concerning anything when it comes to a political sense. And FYI, Ross also did quite a few capital cases. But I guess you wouldn't know that.

You are truely an Alaskan Troll!

upinak April 10, 2009 2:43 PM

It is great to live in this State. You don't need a CCL to carry a concealed gun.

Keep that in mind...as most seem to forget.

I'm in favor of Aggravated battery and Homicide in a Denny's.®

Does that disqualify me?

LindaW April 10, 2009 10:30 PM

Wow, that was an AWESOME letter from the Wayne Anthony Ross!! I love his character. Glad the whole rape claim thing was false. I'll need to send that link to this one lame YouTube political commentator called The Turks or something who was claiming bad stuff about WAR. I couldn't stomach listening through it, but I'm sure it was full of the rape comment charge.

Toki April 11, 2009 12:38 AM

I'm in favor of Vehicular manslaughter and Piracy in a Denney's®.

Does that disqualify me?

techno April 11, 2009 12:51 AM

In what setting or circumstance would you most agree that it would always be all right for a man to hug a female?

1)when she consents

2)if she is married to that guy

3)in social settings where she must be the first to make the overture or actually hug

4)never

5)to comfort a female who is crying or in distress without the woman asking you to to show sympathy

tiny fishes April 11, 2009 5:43 PM

A word to the wise: Leah Burton is no lunatic nor fool. She worked for years among the power base in the fairest state and, as a 5th generation Alaskan, and the daughter of a powerful Alaskan leader, she knows of what she speaks. You may disagree with her ideologies but when push comes to shove, her statements of fact are that: she kept very good notes.
I know I don't need to remind the readers of this blog that if you learn to take "good notes" well, you will be well equipped when the test comes.

tiny fishes April 11, 2009 5:54 PM

Why is it that so many posters on this blog feel they must make THREATS OF VIOLENCE against someone with whom they disagree?
Are you not capable of intelligent discourse and debate? Is the only available option in your mind to murder someone, even in jest?
God help you.

TommyReport April 11, 2009 7:44 PM

Tiny Fishes,

Where is this statement of "violence?" Did you make dream one up in your head to smear those who wish to post on this blog?

tiny fishes April 11, 2009 8:05 PM

To TommyReport: "It is great to live in this State. You don't need a CCL to carry a concealed gun.

Keep that in mind...as most seem to forget."

April 10, 2009 2:43 PM

as well as:
"I'm in favor of Aggravated battery and Homicide in a Denny's.®

Does that disqualify me?"

April 10, 2009 5:12 PM

in addition:
"I'm in favor of Vehicular manslaughter and Piracy in a Denney's®.

Does that disqualify me?"

No smearing. Just stating facts.

Videmus Omnia April 13, 2009 1:05 PM

tinyfishes, those are obviously parodies of Leah Burton's nutty claims about Ross.

Paulette April 13, 2009 1:53 PM

http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2009/04/reading-old-wayne-anthony-ross-op-eds.html

here's an interesting article that has actually done the research on some of Burton's allegations by looking at some of WAR's past articles.

I think WAR's words speak for themselves, don't you??

"It might have been more fun to see Ms. [-----] try to remove the display. Then she could have been arrested and her future as a student of the university could have been resolved through the university disciplinary proceedings."

Sounds pretty racist to me.

Pain April 14, 2009 7:33 AM

Have you forgotten the sheaf of polarizing Op-Eds that WAR wrote in the 80s and 90s? there are two paths here. Palin can polarize this with WAR and stick by him and hope the bigoted base in the lower 48 finds this tasty red meat. Or she can jettison him and try to present herself as a centrist if she truly wants to be President in 2012.

Ross could not get confirmed as US AG with his numerous narrowminded statements on the rights of women, minorities and the environment.

EddieIMS April 14, 2009 8:46 AM

Ummm- Sarah Palin lost... I mean, she's a loser. Why is she still getting press? Can't the loser ultra-conservatives move on and try to work with the rest of us in fixing America for the next 4 years? Palin is not the answer to anything... if she was she'd have helped McCain instead of hurt him. Can we just close this unfortunate chapter of American history and move on?

motes1135 April 14, 2009 11:33 AM

You all just keep this up. Just keep right on a-goin'. The best thing for the country is for Palin to marginalize herself completely, to write herself right off the edge of the rational world. Then the GOP will lose again, further eroding its centrists, and your dangerous failed bedrock "ideas"--bigotry, violence, anti-science, biblical guidance, all the syrupy gunk you reinterpret at your deluded convenience--will finally be pushed off the edge and we can get back to a sane system of parties and politics that has the best interests of the nation at heart. Can't happen soon enough, but it's clear (46% clear) that your desperate fringe is going to have to try one more time to rule from fear and hypocrisy before you become extinct. Can't happen soon enough.
