The Anchorage Daily News reports that Governor Palin held a wide-ranging press availability today. We'll be covering the policy aspects, in regards to abortion and the stimulus, in several posts tonight. But I wanted to pass along this response from Governor Palin regarding allegations that Levi Johnston had been allowed to live under their roof with her daughter Bristol:
In response to a question from a television reporter, Palin also talked about some of the ongoing drama surrounding her family. Levi Johnston said during an interview on CBS’s “Early Show” that he moved into the governor’s house a few weeks before Bristol Palin gave birth to their child.
"I know the truth about my family. I know details about whether Levi Johnston was allowed to live with my teenage daughter or not. By the way, it would be over my dead body that a kid would live with my teenage daughter," Palin said.

UPDATE by RAM: Take a look at this page from the new Esquire article on Todd Palin. It shows how much the Palins welcomed Levi Johnston into their family. Sarah Palin was teaching him how to cook. They treated him like their own son. And lying about them on a tabloid television show was how he repaid their kindness.

Here's the story: Levi spent a night or two at the house when Sarah was in Juneau and Todd was on the Slope. When they found out about it, the excrement hit the rotating cooling device. Bristol moved to Anchorage to stay with Sarah's sister for a while. Too late.

Publius how do you know? Were you there? Or are you just jumping on the band wagon like every other liberal who is scared of Governor Palin? She is a woman of strength and character. She has convictions and values. She cannot live her daughters life. Even though Bristol was raised in a Christian home God gave us all a will and we choose what we want to do. My children were brought up in a Christian home, attended a Christian school but they are given the choice to do what is right and what is wrong. My son became addicted to heroin. He was a junkie for 4 years. We loved him unconditionally and got him the help he needed and today he is at a great organization called Eagle Ranch Ministries in Mt Pleasant Pennsylvania helping other men with addictions. He's a missionary and has gotten his life straightened out and is a youth leader in a huge church and is marrying the pastors daughter in May. If I could have taken my sons addiction I would have to spare him and I'm sure Governor Palin would have done the same for her child. Don't you dare pass judgement!
I'm torn on this. I'm not going to get too critical because I'm not in her shoes and if she felt she needed to respond so be it. I just want the whole thing to go away, him the nasty sister and the crack dealing momma all just need to get lost.

I know this is Monday morning quarterbacking and that she was hogtied by McLameBrain, but I always felt that if Gov. Palin had come out swinging against Gibson and Couric, throwing it back in their faces, she would have saved herself a load of grief. She was far to meek and reserved. That was NOT the convention speech Sarah. People love fight and confidence, and will forgive almost anything if you display it. If she'd have said "Listen, I'm not playing your game Charlie!" People would have eaten it up. That's why I love it when she brings out both barrels. Hopefully so will do that consistently if she runs for POTUS.
That was great to hear the governor on Eddie Burke.

I heard someone today on Fox talking about Sarah. He is a conservative writer and he said she shouldn't respond to these comments about the kids. I don't agree. That might be alright for a man..but a MOTHER has to protect and defend her kids. You are so right about her not defending her position during the election and it hurt her. The hateful stuff won't go away even if she remains silent. Let it be known, she will respond and we are glad for it.

No telepromter, no pre-submitted questions, just honest, complete answers. This woman is AMAZING. I love the boldness and sincerity about her faith. Sum her istswesan one word...AUTHENTIC!

Great audio on the Guv's press conference! Glad that she got a chance to clear the whole asking Begich to step down comment. I knew that CNN took it too far by headlining it "Palin asks Begich to step down." And glad she also came out with a strong statement such as "over my dead body."
I am thinking though that maybe he did stay over when she was in Juneau and Todd was working in the North Slope. Maybe since she is 18 she was allowed to house-sit the house by herself with Willow. Then of course, Bristol would allow Levi to come over without letting the parents know. But then again, Sarah would've asked Bristol if the accusations from Levi were true and if Bristol said it was false then she would believe her daughter.
Anyway, I hope that Levi gets exposed for his lies.

I was wondering the same about "what does levi gain by lying." Well, for one thing, he'll get huge national attention and he'll have the left on his side because a foe of the Palin is a friend of the left. Plus he'll ruin Sarah's chance at running for the presidential race so his son will still be in Alaska, but why should he worry about that? By that time, Bristol would be in her mid-20's and on her own.
Also, he did say at the end that he would vote for Palin for president if he had to choose between her and Obama, so that didn't ruin her.
I'm confused. Or maybe Levi and his sister thought he was over at their house so much that it seemed like he was practically living there? He said he has pj's over there as well. A guy like him doesn't look like he wears actual pj's, but more like sweat pants and a t-shirt for bed.
Anyway, I believe her when she said that he didn't live with them.

First of all, I can't believe all the sniveling anklebiters in AK...even the reporters and legislators! What a bunch of babies....they all need babysitting by the governor. "Mommy...look at me!" In the lower 48, governors of states travel as much as heads of state. How many nights as Obama spent in DC? According to the Washington Compost, less than half his days as President! Governors Jindal, Schwarzenegger, Kaine, Gregg, Crist, Perry, Huntman, etc. etc. etc. are in DC as much as they're in their own states. Sheesh...Palin hasn't been out of the state since the legislative session began and has not responded to (and hence lost) high profile speaking engagements because she's concentrating on state business, and the reports have the nerve to ask if she's not paying as much attention to the state as she did before she was nominated? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe she was out the state at least 3 times during last year's session--and it was for several days each time.
OK...enough of my rant. And btw, Bob, the only way ANY Mom would allow her teenage daughter to shack up with her b/f under her roof would be over her dead body. Levi clearly demonstrated that he's a few cards short of a full deck, and he was so easily lead by the questioners in both interviews. He answered "uh huh" to so many questions I'm not even sure he knew what he was answering. My guess is that he did stay over shortly before/after the baby was born; he said he has his stuff there, and likely was using Track's empty room. I believe the governor was reacting to the allegation that he shared a room with Bristol. The baby was likely in her room, and he probably did go in there to help care for the baby.
OK...I'm done hearing anymore about Bristol/Levi. Sorry again for the long rant.

If you are referring to the press conference today, didn't you love it when a reporter asked her something about the national campaign and she said she couldn't answer because last time she answered a question about the national campaign in her office, she had an ethics complaint.

I don't care for most of the legislators in my state, but they don't say anything about our governor traveling which he does quite often to build up his profile for the 2012 run. They interview him in his office and ask questions other than state business. He hasn't had one ethic complaint filed.
I am thoroughly disgusted listening to these Alaskan legislators.
I got the impression just listening to the reporters questions, they are already upset mommy is leaving for one day next week.

What do believe to be the truth about whether Levi and Bristol shared a bed and cohabited under the Palin's family home?
1)as JimAK suggests in the comments section they do so without Todd and Sarah's knowledge or permission; one or two days is not the defintion of cohabiting
2)Levi convinced Bristol that it would be OK for him to sleep with Bristol for a couple of nights when her parents were away
3)Levi and Bristol never slept with each other, let alone cohabited under the Palin's roof
4)Levi was told to say words to this effect by his 'Obama handlers' in order to marginalize Sarah from her conservative base
and thus was paid to say it
5)Levi is an idiot or extremely angry and wants to blame Sarah because he has an overactive libido and it resulted in him being a father

I sure did but I may have just gotten some bad unsourced information from the Alaska Ear. She made the claim that Grussendorf was one vote shy and that the holdout was a Native who sat on a board with Nelson. I thought that he would swing over and vote in favor of a guy with whom he serves on a board.
Perhaps Alaska Ear received wrong information that it was a 5-4 vote for Grussendorf. It's pretty clear now that Hollis French has no intention on accepting any Palin appointment unless that person is Beth Kertulla or one of the three other names from people who have already indicated that they will not run for re-election against Kertulla. Art Chance doesn't seem to believe Kertulla is a walk for winning the seat either, so perhaps that's the reason why they are fighting any attempt by Palin to substitute someone who may prove to be a strong candidate against Kertulla in 2010.
I'm usually right on everything so you'll have to give me a break if I'm wrong a couple of times techno, hahaha.
Sarah Palin's problem is NOT that she is a highly competent administrator or extremely talented politician.
If I were a part of Governor Palin's team, which I'm not, that would be the least of my concerns or worries.

I'm sorry, but I believe this family squabble is a private matter and by commenting on it she is not doing herself any favors with the press. Stick to important stuff, meaning important to you and me, and keep family matters private is all I'm saying. Isn't that what she said during the VP run, Family are off limits, well stick to it and say no comment when family questions come up. Sounds pretty simple to me.
I think it is good, Governor Palin respond to Levi.

What difference does it make if Levi stayed there or not, he is the father and they were at the time getting married. There are articles in People mag. Jan. 18 and Feb 19 saying that Levi "moved in" a week after the baby was born and that Sarah said "they are working their butts off taking care of the baby and going to school. Why is she now denying he stayed there? Levi has nothing to gain by saying that when it was in People mag. 3 months ago and it was ok then when they were getting married.

I'm ok with Sarah speaking out. It's better than keeping quiet and allowing people to assume it. The accusations are already made public. You have to go and stop it before it continues.
She didn't attack Levi. She just said that over her dead body that she would allow such a thing. She said it gently, but in print it looks like she's ripping his head off and some will see that as an attack on Levi and her being unprofessional. It's sad that Levi has to go on record to say that Sarah is lying. Very sad. Imagine if Tripp would have to see that video one day.
It's also sad for Tripp to later hear is Grandmother calling his father a liar. She should be happy that he stayed there and helped Bristol take care of Tripp. Everyone in this story should GROW UP.

"VAN SUSTEREN: Are you getting any sleep?
BRISTOL: No. I'm exhausted!
(LAUGHTER)
VAN SUSTEREN: You're exhausted.
BRISTOL: Yes.
VAN SUSTEREN: What's the night like? What -- tell me about the sleep.
BRISTOL: Well, it just varies every night, I guess. But he's up pretty much about half of the night, I guess.

The only mention of Levi's involvement:

Don't just trust my quotes, go read the entire transcript. Bristol never said that BOTH SHE AND LEVI (Oh, wow, I typed in caps again. Look at that. Amazing.) were missing sleep.

You can believe what you want, its in black and white, if your saying the mag lied then why didn't Sarah say something 3 mos ago. Sarah said the house was getting crowded with Bristol and the baby and Levi is staying to help her out. The media was reporting that Levi was living with the Palin's before Bristol got pregnant. I believe that's what Sarah was responding to.
HB---When and where did the media say that?? No one has ever said it was before the baby. Please don't spin the story. I don't believe Levi said any thing bad about Sarah in the interviews, except she lied about living or staying at there house, maybe it was a tent in the back yard--who cares. He never said he was sleeping with her in the house!!He probably slept in Tracks room.

I am not spinning the story. I saw this on Bill O'reilly as well as Cnn. A few of the websites I've been on people have also been saying this. If you don't believe that's fine. I'm not going change your mind on this. You are free to have your own opinion of Sarah. I don't agree with it but I can be respectful of it.

The portion you quoted from the magazine said that "Bristol told FOX..." and she didn't say that. And People didn't interview the Palins at their home in January. The things about Levi "living" with the Palins were not attributed to any source, so it was always impossible to accurately judge their veracity. That's what I was pointing out. And I'm not saying the magazine "lied," I'm saying that they were being People magazine and embellishing, like they always do. Anyone who reads People magazine stories should be aware that they embellish, or get inaccurate information (See: their first story on Tripp's birth when they got the date of birth and birth weight wrong) because of how they get their information (ie often second or third-hand).
I apologize if I was rude, but let's look at the sources. If I see a quote in People magazine or in another place that I can "fact check" by looking at the transcript, that's what I do. Even "hard news" organizations got quotes from Gov. Palin incorrect during the campaign, often because the reporter who was transcribing messed up the transcription (which is understandable because transcribing is tough sometimes). So, I go to the original source, when possible to double check. And in this case, the original source indicates that Bristol did not say that both she and Levi were missing sleep. People magazine embellished or inferred that, and put it in their story, but she never actually said that.
Why would people mag. make that story up and why didn't Sarah point that out to them at the time,I'm pretty sure the story had to be OK'ed by the Palin's, didn't they get paid for the People interviews? Sorry but you are still talking about the interview with Greta during the Iron Dog race in Fairbanks, that was either late Feb. or March, the one I'm talking about was in Jan. You don't believe People mag. but you believe O'Rielly, CNN and web-sites? Doesn't matter anyway, Levi never said they were sleeping together,he could have been a guest, so whats the big deal anyway. Done with this subject, leave the guy alone. geez
