Is the New York Times Preparing a Hit-Piece on Governor Palin?

(H/T Tommyreport)

The New York Times has sent a reporter to Juneau for an article detailing Governor Palin's governance of Alaska since the end of the 2008 presidential campaign.

The ADN reports:

Earwigs report that New York Times reporter Bill Yardley was in Juneau this past week. He's said to be working on a story about how Sarah's governance has changed since the VP race.

The Juneau Empire also confirms the presence of Mr. Yardley at Governor Palin's most recent press conference:

On Friday, Palin declined to comment on her plans for a future run for national office, or whether that might be affecting her relationship with the Legislature. But the most telling detail may have been the fact that the question was posed by a New York Times reporter who was visiting Juneau to cover Palin

The question asked by Mr. Yardley is very telling as to the intentions of his article. Do not be surprised if the article is similar to that of the anti-Palin piece that appeared in Conde Nast's Portfolio last month. The author of the Portfolio article went out of his way to quote Palin enemies such as Mike Hawker and Andrew Halcro.

A New York Times article centering on Palin's relationship with the legislature will likely be full of quotes from Palin's foes, who include: Jay Ramras, Mike Hawker, Beth Kerttula, Hollis French, Johnny Ellis and others. My prediction is that the article will paint Palin as the villian, while the legislature will be depicted as the victim. We have detailed how some in the Alaska Legislature have attacked Governor Palin for a variety of mundane reasons, including Ramras' recent questioning of Palin's choice for attorney general, Wayne Anthony Ross. Ramras was more focused on Governor Palin wearing an Arctic Cat jacket and potentially writing a book than he was on Ross' legal philosophy. The questioning eventually got so out of hand that Ramras was reminded by Rep. Lynn that this was Ross' confirmation, not Governor Palin's. Ramras has also questioned Palin's commitment to state government by sharing his concerns about a one day trip she will be taking during the last week of the legislative session. Ramras must have forgotten to mention the taxpayer junket he took part in to Washington D.C. that closed down the state capitol for a week. Rep. Les Gara also took part in the trip and was so excited at almost meeting the president that he detailed his experience in a letter. Hollis French was the ringleader of the "Tasergate" investigation, and he even went as far as promising an "October surprise." Looks to me as if the Alaska Democrats were playing politics on behalf of the national party. We've been detailing for weeks Beth Kerttula's involvement with the Juneau political machine. It was also rumored that Senate Majority leader Johnny Ellis bragged that he had an Obama campaign issued Blackberry phone during the presidential campaign.

When it comes to the so-called relationship problems between Palin and the legislature, I think it is safe to say that most of the blame lies with lawmakers.

There was another article from January (I cannot recall the paper) that "bemoaned" how the Governor's relationship with the legislature had "deteriorated." I doubt a piece on this by the Slimes will have any effect on her. Most people do not care how good a governor's relationship with the state legislature is. They expect friction. They want to she how she or he governs.

Gov. Palin's relationship with the legislature has never been exactly chummy. She only has a few allies in either body, none of whom have any power. The GOPers have been out to get her ever since she knocked off Murkowski and the Dems were only going to be friendly until she asserted herself as a Republican.

SCSoxFan April 12, 2009 4:29 PM

I just read the Juneau Empire article, and it is typical whining from a state legislature. They all blame Palin for not being involved. Frankly, after the treatment she's gotten from them, I'd be keeping my cards close to the vest, too. If she was more involved she'd be blasted for "bullying" them.

This will be another attempt to marginalize Palin by the media. First she was a theocratic hypocrite, now she's a bad governor. As I said above, most people are not going to care about a governor's relationship with his or her legislature.

No one reads the New York Slimes anymore. Perhaps they should be checking out Obama's half brother, ya know, the guy accused of Sexually assaulting a woman, nah who am I fooling, only myself to think that there is any decency left at the Slimes. Gee New York Times, you keep on preaching how Sarah Palin doesn't matter anymore, yet your sending a reporter to Juneau of all places. Gee I wonder why..I smell FEAR from the left..and I LOVE IT

Does anybody know about the credibility of a site called mediacurves.com? They claim that they conducted a study of 303 people, and found that "(81%) believe Sarah Palin distorted details of her daughter, Bristol Palin, and Levi Johnston’s relationship to better her own image in the recent political campaign."

I think this is part of coordinated effort to maximize any effect that Levi could have had on Sarah. This is why I think Sarah responded appropriately.

TommyReport April 12, 2009 5:56 PM

Uga,

That survey is akin to a focus-group poll...not a scientific poll under any circumstances.

I don't see any reason why the results are to be questioned, though I question the accuracy of focus group polls in general. However, the good news is that in order for the results to have any meaning, someone would have to watch the entire interview that Levi conducted with CBS News. There's no evidence that very many Americans fit that description.

ugafish April 12, 2009 5:59 PM

I don't buy any of their findings. There's no way any reasonable person could have watched that interview and came away thinking highly of the Johnstons and questioning Sarah. I bet they asked the questions in a way that would ensure the answers would back up whatever conclusion they pre-determined.

Greg April 12, 2009 6:33 PM

Palin's facebook page has added close to 20,000 new members in just the last few days, that may be a better indication than a focus group of 303 people.

Not surprising that the NYT is planning a major hit piece, or what they think is going to be major. I've already seen bloggers whinning about how she is leaving right at the end of the legislative session. We all know that so much of what passes as news about Palin starts off with what bloggers are whinning about.

ugafish April 12, 2009 6:39 PM

That's awesome news about the new facebook members. Why do you think there has been a surge in the last couple of days?

MLWELZ April 12, 2009 6:42 PM

Better to have a few legislators bitter about you than to have all of the state laughing at you like they do in New York State.
Tina Fey was cutsey but the imitations of Patterson (D) make me roll on the floor.

upinak April 12, 2009 6:42 PM

the NY slimes it trying to sell what they know is going to sell.

To bad they aren't going to make it much longer.

Panchita April 12, 2009 6:54 PM

ugafish: 264 of the respondent in that survey are flat out libs. The rest pretended to be:)

Greg April 12, 2009 7:11 PM

I'm not sure why her facebook numbers are increasing, but it could be that more and more people are rallying around her in the face of the continued media attacks.

Maybe the NYT hit piece is being readied to try and overpower news of the two events she is attending in Indiana later this week. They will both be highly successful, generate a lot of local news coverage, which will then be spread by the internet. During the campaign I always noticed that local reporters did a much better job reporting on her events than the national reporters did. Local reports tended to ask locals who attended the rallies why they had come, and what they had thought, all in all presenting very positive reporting.

hrh April 12, 2009 7:34 PM

While I'm disgusted ahead of time and in dread of yet another NYT hit piece, I take some comfort in assuming that most readers of the NYT are not Palin admirers any way. They are the epitome of the East Coast elite cabal so the article will just be reverberating in the East Coast elite's echo chamber.

My expectations are so low that it would be a pleasant surprise if the article was even slightly fair-minded.

Does anyone know which one was Bill Yardley from the video? Was it the baldish guy sitting next to Rhonda McBride, who asked her the question about how her governing had changed since the VP run, who she sorta' smacked down by saying the last time she answered a question like that she was hit with an ethics charge?

If so, he did seem to be angling for a hit piece. Sigh.

narciso April 12, 2009 7:38 PM

It's a shame, but it's a testament to her influence, that they must try to 'rubbish' her. THanks to this site, we have the building blocks of how this story was constructed, the likely bias of the sources, and the counterattack.
So they sent a political reporter to os hit job, that they could have done with a few calls to the usual subjects.

section9 April 12, 2009 7:46 PM

Here's the thing: once the Legislative Session is complete, she'll be able to assert herself both as a national spokeswoman for the Republican Party and as a policymaker. The problem she has is that while she is governor, the White House's astroturfers (people like Linda) are going to keep filing ethics complaints against her in an attempt to keep her in Alaska. So the Times piece is really an attempt to take the wind out of her sails, but will probably be ignored by her.

Nobody who counts in the Republican Party pays any attention to the Times anyway.

TommyReport April 12, 2009 7:47 PM

HRH,

That does seem to be the guy.

Hopefully the four guys in the Senate minority will get interviewed.

It's kind of funny that Fagan can hammer Palin for not being conservative enough when her closest allies in the Senate are the most fiscally and socially conservative Republicans.

Alaskan Always April 12, 2009 7:58 PM

Things aren't lookin' good for Ms. Palin.

I don't think she could get reelected as governor of Alaska. People here are starting to wake up. Even the comments in the Frontiersman (Palin's home newspaper) are negative.

TommyReport April 12, 2009 7:59 PM

By the way, check out the open thread for another round of the rogue Hotair operation not endorsed by C4P in response to anti-Palin folks on HA.

Alaskan Always April 12, 2009 8:02 PM

What I'm saying, Tommy, is that people in Alaska are starting to see Palin for what she truly is: A FRAUD.

I live in Alaska. I hear what people here are saying.

Lipstick April 12, 2009 8:04 PM

How is Palin not invovled in the Leg. session? How is she not interacting with them?

She has not left the state. She has been in Juneau.

Sometimes I wonder what those people want from her?

What would she have to do to make them not say things like that?

I would love to see numbers on how many govs in their last legislative sessions of their state were only out of the state for a total of maybe 48 hours?

My guess is NONE.

I just do not understand their critical view of Palin.

I am so thankful she is so feisty and stubburn. Is it just me or is she starting to regain most of her fiesty and sassy qualities back now that she has had time to lick her wounds?

By the time she is unleashed to the lower 48 I think she will be in rare form.

Those guys in the leg. are all petty. They are small people who want to cut down someone who is more honest than they could ever hopw to be. Sarah SERVES in her job, they want power and influence and fame. What a bunch of small people.

If they were watched even half as close as Palin you could file all kinds of TRUE ethics violations against them. They are so partisan.

upinak April 12, 2009 8:06 PM

Always.. oh do tell WHAT are they saying?

I am sure that wherever you are that those people are all democrats and probably have been pullig for French since the start. And I am sure you are also a transplant. Go play with a moose.

Lakerfanalways April 12, 2009 8:09 PM

Alaska Always does not live in Alaska. I had a good time checking his IP address..dude does NOT live there. Good try though Alaska Always. I mean really, why are you wasting your time here, you obviously don't like Sarah Palin, so why are you here. You THAT desperate to spread your hate, or just desperate for attention. I actually KNOW people in Alaska who all adore her and think she is doing a wonderful job. Who would you rather replace her, a Democrat? Hollis French? You think they would do better. You are a pathetic prick who obviously has NO life! I feel sorry for you, I bet your still upset that Obama hasn't sent you your check yet. Just keep waiting, it will come

upinak April 12, 2009 8:11 PM

Laker so where does AA reside? Real People in Alaska would like to know!

Lakerfanalways April 12, 2009 8:12 PM

Remember everyone, Obama and Axelrod actually pay people to go on message boards and spread hate. They are paid between 8-10 bucks an hour to come on Conservative boards and talk nasty about Conservatives and Sarah Palin. So don't believe a word coming out of their mouth.

hrh April 12, 2009 8:34 PM

upinak, nope, neither of those guys are the one I was thinking it was. In fact, I don't recognize either of those guys from the presser?

The Old York Times is best used for Bird Cage liner, or Frozen Fish wrapping. It does start a good fire if used correctly with dry kindling.

Lakerfanalways April 12, 2009 9:14 PM

Someone asked how I know that Alaska Always does NOT live in Alaska, well, according to the IP address(I had assistance with this) the location is NOT Alaska, in fact, they are not even sure this person resides in the United States..basically when you click on any of our names, we all got profiles, this one does not, so if Alaska Always was REALLY from Alaska, why hide it, why not make a profile. This person is a paid Obama bot here to cause problems. Don't listen to him/her, I doubt this idiot could locate Alaska on a map

narciso April 12, 2009 10:02 PM

One thinks the Times is a master at this, but the Washington Post is no slouch at this, either, as they totally underplay and misrepresent the whole point of the Stevens prosecution:

Sarah is such a blessing and the attack Bullies just keep reinforcing the enormous difference of character and honesty and trust she possesses compared to their lack of ability to compete intellectually on the field of ideals and critical thinking. The mirror speaks to them of their emptiness and sadness.

fwiw April 13, 2009 6:53 PM

AA is right the comments in the newspaper in Wasilla and Fbks.DNM are starting to go against Sarah lately and impeach Sarah signs are starting to show up and a rumor of a petition going around. Doesn't sound to good for her. I think she should be sticking around tell the leg. closes if she wants to be re-elected but, maybe she doesn't want that in her future?
