Chip Thoma: This is Not About Palin, But Her "Notoriety" is the Reason Behind These "Voyeur Tours"

The ADN reports:

Gov. Sarah Palin is clashing with a Juneau activist over what he calls "voyeur" bus tours past the governor's mansion that he asserts ruin the neighborhood to exploit her fame.

Chip Thoma, head of Responsible Cruising in Alaska, has put up signs saying "Stop Local Tours" in the area near the mansion, with active support from at least a handful of residents.

"As Governor Palin spends very little time in Juneau, especially during the summer, these are 'voyeur' tours premised solely on her notoriety," Thoma said in an April 30 letter to Juneau tour operators.

Thoma said in a Friday interview, though, that the tours really aren't any worse than before Palin took office. He said it's not about her, but about impacts on the neighborhoods near Juneau.

The governor said she welcomes tourists and "can't imagine other areas of Alaska looking at having the Governor's house nearby as a degrading irritation that invites voyeurism."

The governor said she offered to meet with Thoma "to ask if I could lessen his burden by keeping a lower profile," but he declined and suggested she work it out with the Juneau mayor instead.

"I wanted to offer him to hide Piper's trampoline further in a corner of the yard ... if it's a matter of not giving anyone anything to look at so they'll go away then I'd ask Piper to not giggle so loudly on her buoy swing or bicycle in the yard," Palin said in a written statement, referring to her 7-year-old daughter.

Palin said she's spent most of her time in Juneau in recent months and finds the complaint ironic, given criticism in the capital city that she runs state government mostly from the Anchorage area.

"We've been slammed if we're not here enough, but now the table's turned and the message is we're creating chaos because we're here too often," Palin said in a written statement.

[...]

Thoma, a longtime activist on tourism issues, said he suggested Palin work with the mayor instead of him because local ordinances are at issue.

"I'm trying to do what I can here to help the neighborhood. I don't want to make this personal between the governor and I," he said. "She is obviously coming after me, and I've never met her before."

Thoma said there were four people who lived in the area of the bus tours who talked to him about the problem and he decided to help do something about it. He said this has been an increasing problem over time under every governor.

"It has nothing to do with Sarah Palin, it really doesn't, she just happens to be governor in 2009," Thoma said.

[...]

Palin said she loves Juneau and likes to see it shown off to visitors. She said that, if she had her way, there would be a big banner in front of the governor's mansion and the Capitol building that said "Welcome, People! Locals and outside tourists -- we're glad you're here. It's beautiful here -- Enjoy!"

Mr. Thoma, you are in fact a liar. In the beginning of the article you rip Governor Palin because she "attracts voyeurism" based on her "notoriety." At the end of the article you claim that it "has nothing to do with Sarah Palin." Please, spare us the nonsense. Thoma claims that this problem has occurred under every governor. Yes, I am sure that thousands of people were lining up to catch a glimpse of the charismatic Tony Knowles. Just imagine the problems Thoma will have on his hands if Mr. Personality himself, Andrew Halcro, ever gains more than 9% in the governor's election! Millions of people from all over America lining up to see Halcro. Even today, the traffic around his rental car business is horrendous! By the way, did anybody even notice that Halcro shut down his radio program and blog? I am sure that his seven listeners and readers are very disappointed. Although, seven is higher than the number Thoma claims are "fed up" with the Palin children -- a whopping four.

Governor Palin has even offered to meet with Thoma to discuss ways to "lower her profile," which include moving Piper's trampoline to a different part of the governor's mansion grounds. However, Thoma doesn't seem interested in actually discussing the issue with the Governor because he would rather just try to shut down a little girl's lemonade stand. As a "veteran" of Woodstock, Mr. Thoma sure has the experience to take down the "establishment," it is just that this time he would rather go after an eight year old's buoy swing and bicycle.

UPDATE: This quote also sticks out for me:

Cindy Smith, who lives near Cope Park, downhill from the governor's mansion, said the tours are a big problem in the narrow streets and she has been talking to everyone she can about it.

Who is Cindy Smith? Well, she is Hollis French's chief-of-staff.

UPDATE II: (H/T LindaW) Here are the "eyesores":

UPDATE by RAM: Tim Blair provides us with an excellent summary of Chip Thoma's life, titled "The Arc of A Thoma."

UPDATE by Mel: Tweet from the Guv:

As summer approaches the Great Land, so do AK visitors. We welcome you to visit us in the Land of the Midnight Sun!

How much is a glass of Piper's lemonade? I want to make sure I budget for that.

Hey aging hippie dude man:

"I'm trying to do what I can here to help the neighborhood. I don't want to make this personal between the governor and I," he said.

Thought "progressives" were the smart ones. Betcha Sarah knows that the proper grammar is "between the governor and me."

Guess you were bonged out during most of your high school English classes in the '60's. Dude.

Greg May 9, 2009 10:32 AM

The Palin's should get Piper a moped, build a bigger lemonade stand, and hold daily cookouts in the yard.

On Saturdays they could have a garage sale.

Nancy May 9, 2009 10:45 AM

Thanks JR for this post.
I am so glad that she doesn't bite her lip and hold back on her sarcastic digs. Poor Chip, how does it feel to get used as a punching bag by the 'Cuda?
Who else wants what Sarah's bringing?

LindaW May 9, 2009 10:49 AM

Great newsbusting, JR! :)

I like her comment on if she had it her way, there'd be a banner outside the capitol building welcoming tourists. That's so Sarah Palin! Love her.

LindaW May 9, 2009 10:53 AM

Cindy Smith may be out of a job soon if her boss Hollis French doesn't get re-elected. She's feeling bitter.

Haha.

I think the solution to this would be to have the tour buses park somewhere by the Capitol building and then have the group walk to the mansion instead of having the buses drive down to the narrow street.

DrChill May 9, 2009 10:56 AM

I think I can clear up the 'liar' 'nonsense' misunderstanding.

Palin's popularity/notoriety seems to be responsible for the increased tourism. He identifies the problem as the increased tourism, not Palin, although he believes her popularity caused it.

To put it another way, if you believe god caused the flood and you hate the flood, it would be wrong to conclude that you must therefore hate god.

Understand now?

Great write up. Man, people will find ANYTHING to complain about!!!

It's like Dennis Miller said the other night on O'Reilly:

True, true Mr. Miller.

PS: Just wanted ya'll to know that Kristan Cole (Palin's lifelong friend & Trustee for the Defense Fund) follows C4P on Twitter! Whoo hoo!

You can't be this clueless, could you, if they're locking up the state's resources, then you rely on tourism, on who's the biggest draw in the state in part. Maybe they should move the capital to Anchorage, or Willow or even Wasilla, I mean they don't want all
the pesky traffic, or the revenue that comes from that.

Nancy May 9, 2009 11:27 AM

Must. Not. Give. Sarah. Palin. Credit. For. Anything.

LindaW May 9, 2009 11:34 AM

Wouldn't it be funny if other cities are petitioning to move the governor's mansion to their city? It's like, 'if you don't want it, we'll take it.'

Piper has a cool backyard. I'd like to bounce around on all that stuff and I'm WAY older than she is.

Once again, we have the extremely vocal, whiny minority trying to rule the majority.

Jim May 9, 2009 11:48 AM

I think this guy ate the brown acid.

Things must be awfully slow up there in Juneau, that a guy actually has the time and inclination to make a stink over some tourists. He actually sits on his dock and tries to chase them away. Reminds me of the bridge keeper in The Holy Grail. Watch out for the killer bunny rabbit under the trampoline, folks. He's got huge, sharp teeth!

How hypocritical to reference Sarah's Notoriety!

Seems to me thats all these idiots want is to use her name for notoriety of there own, for what ever ridiculous cause they can think of. OH SHUTUP!

Love her Motherly admonishment, something the now grown children(idiots) apparently never received from their Mothers when acting up as kids!

Childish selfishness run amuck.. cradle to grave parenting, be it the role of schools or government, in this case a Governor teaching values and common sense to spoiled BRATTS!

Love the good Gov.

Hey, let's not start bashing on the 60-something population! This guy's a jerk but it has nothing to do with being at Woodstock. He's just a bitter complaining jerk! And as some as stated a lair too! I would guess the Governor's Mansion is a historical tourist sight in most states. It is in Michigan.

He's stupid too as I tweeted yesterday a smart man would open up a taco or hot dog stand to compliment Piper's lemonade stand. Or as C4P tweeted back a smart conservative would try to go into business with Piper rather than shut her down!

Here's a "capitol" idea, he could try to rent a small corner of Piper's stand and sell 'Thoma's Alaskan Moose Jerky!' With his revenue he could landscape and block out the Mansion eyesore with a hedgerow and some off the street parking or something!

Love Gov. Palin's reaction! But please let's not make fun of our aging hippie generation we survived though the Johnson, Carter and Nixon administrations! LOL (Plus some good music came out of Woodstock, imo!)

R. A. Mansour May 9, 2009 1:17 PM

2012Karen, I was the one who tweeted back to you. I agree about the music. I, of course, am way too young to have been there. I'm a 30 year old hippie myself. Well, not a hippie exactly, but I like the music.

Thoma has turned into "the Man"!

Jenny May 9, 2009 1:51 PM

Much of the complaining must be orchestrated by liberal DNC. Democrats are so desperate in destroying Palin that they have to attack a 7yr. old girl.

Anonymoose May 9, 2009 1:56 PM

Juneau does have a voyeur problem that results in unwanted traffic around the governor's mansion.

Anybody that attacks a child, in my opinion, is a loathing low life.
I learn at a very young age, to trust the instincts of a child and a dog.
They usually can spot true sincerity or hostility.
This guy is a bitter man.

CruelaDev May 9, 2009 1:58 PM

I never did understand folks like this...

I lived in Ski Town USA or Steamboat Springs, CO for many years. It is driven by tourism! Winter and Summer! Tourists...we called them tourons!..but anyway...they are the life blood!
We had some folks in Steamboat though just like this "Mr. Thoma" person.

So the question always came up...If you hate the tourism so bad..Why then are YOU here? Never could get a real reason...

I suspect Juneau is much the same...driven by tourism.

Like the old saying goes...there is always "one" in every family/community! Even in Alaska!

bruce nahin May 9, 2009 1:59 PM

I too am older and remember woodstock, but I think it would be neat to have youngsters next door, we love it when our neighbor's grandkids come and look forward to being grandparents someday too...I ave ever been to Juneau but in Sacramento there are lines to see all the attractions-

VidSweet May 9, 2009 2:06 PM

"I wanted to offer him to hide Piper's trampoline further in a corner of the yard ... if it's a matter of not giving anyone anything to look at so they'll go away then I'd ask Piper to not giggle so loudly on her buoy swing or bicycle in the yard," Palin said in a written statement, referring to her 7-year-old daughter.

First of all, YEAHHHH!!! Love the snark. Oh, I;d hate to be on the receiving end of that snark. On the other hand, I'd love to keep hearing that snark. Oh, let's face it, I'd happily listen to her yell at me, too. Anything for Sarah.

Second, AWWWWWW!! Piper giggling. Aw, so cute. I can just picture her sweetness and innocence and cuteness. Thoma is killing laughter. Doesn't he know that children are out future?! Haha.

Where's that Whitney Houston song?
"Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be-lyrics"

VidSweet May 9, 2009 2:16 PM

So, who can organize the OTHER Juneau residents to put up signs in their yard welcoming tourists and snarkily mocking the likes of Thoma?

Maybe those signs can outnumber the 4 people who are opposed to the tourism.

Oh, and add to the Pro signs:
"enjoy your visit. the millions of $ in revenue benefit our city."

Bean Counter May 9, 2009 2:23 PM

Hey Mr. Grumpy Woodstock, I'll trade you Nashville during Fan Fair for Juneau's cruise tours any day of the week. You don't know what bus pestilence is.

I'll gladly set Piper up with a lemonade stand outside the country music hall of fame and do keep her books gratis. She'll rake it in.

Must really suck to be you.

CCRWM May 9, 2009 2:28 PM

Sarah Palin's response to Thoma made me laugh...she is just to good at the dig with a smile. she intimidated him to the point he's afraid to meet with her I don't think that he even got that she was being sarcastic... Sarah Palin seems very self assured to me. It is obvious that in spite of things happening to her that would get most people down a long while...she bounces back very quickly.

Nancy May 9, 2009 2:37 PM

Mr. Thoma has "this is not about Sarah Palin" disease, though he is not as subtle about it as other notable people that suffer from it. He can't just talk out of both sides of his mouth like that, it's very transparent.
President Barack Obama showed symptoms during the campaign, as seen by his lipstick on a pig joke, that had NOTHING to do with the joke Governor Palin made during her convention speech, just days before.
Mr. Carville displayed his symptom just a few days ago, when on a talk show he said a Republican who believed in less government, low taxes and was charismatic scared him. But he wasn't talking about Sarah Palin! Nah! I don't see these people getting any better over the next 4-12
years.

CCRWM said "she just seems very self assured to me."

The producer of SNL seems to think the good Gov is indeed very confident:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/09/marci-klein-snl-producer_n_201035.html

It's in the Part III video about 2 mins in.

The producer says it's based on the Gov's handshake. I was struck with the same idea from this pic:

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/large_photo.php?id=297

That looks like a confident grip to me.

Have any C4Pers met the good gov and shaken her hand?

I remember in the Hasselback campaign appearance in Florida when the good gov let loose about the clothing debacle, she mentioned her wedding ring and said Todd was holding it in his pocket 'cause when she shook a lot of people's hands, the ring would dig in and hurt. Sounds like a firm grip to me.

Rusty May 9, 2009 4:05 PM

Not about Palin huh? Well I decided to do a search of one Theodore P. "Chip" Thoma on the Alaska Public Offices searchable database to see what kind of political contributions he has made. Here is the resulting link:

http://webapp.state.ak.us/apoc/contributions.jsp?name=THOMA%2C+THEODORE&pagesize=20

As you can see, he is a big Tony Knowles fan. In the 1998 gubenatorial race he gave $1,000 to the Knowles/Ulmer ticket. When Knowles ran for governor again in 2006 (against Palin) he gave another $1,000 to Knowles. Sounds to me like he is a sore loser that Sarah beat his boy!

He also gave $1,750 to the Peace and Quiet Coalition group in Juneau. Interesting, that according to APOC one of the deputy treasurers of that group is one Kim Metcalf. Where have we heard that name before!

He also gave $500 to Concerned Citizens for Responsible Tourism. This is the group that got the ballot initiatve passed that imposed a $50 per passanger tax on the Alaska cruise line operators. One of the major cruise lines recently announced that it is cutting back on the number of Alaska cruises because of this tax.

katiejane May 9, 2009 4:34 PM

Based on this: Thoma said in a Friday interview, though, that the tours really aren't any worse than before Palin took office, what's his problem then?

Why should Gov Palin take his advice he suggested Palin work with the mayor instead of him because local ordinances are at issue. sunce apparently HE didn't. If the tours actually were violating some ordinance wouldn't the local government notify the company.

Rusty May 9, 2009 4:41 PM

Further to my previous comments, I thought I would do a search of Thoma's federal political contributions. Here is the link:

http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/search.php?name=thoma&state=AK&zip=&employ=&cand=&all=Y&sort=N&capcode=p6xyh&submit=Submit

Guess what? More money for Tony Knowles. In the 2004 Senate race between Knowles and Lisa Murkowski "Chip" donated $2,831 to Knowles.

Between the two gubenatorial races and the Senate race he has donated $4,831 to Knowles. He seems to have a real thing for Tony. No wonder he is so bitter. He keeps dumping all of this money into Knowles campaigns, and Tony keeps losing!

TP is with Greta! hahaha

With his wife back in Alaska dealing with a natural disaster, Todd Palin was being led around the brunch by Fox's Greta Van Susteren, who is apparently his host AND handler.

POLITICO started to chat with Alaska's "first dude" when Van Susteren intervened. The host of On The Record told us this brunch was "off the record" - no talking with the husband of former Republican vice presidential nominee, Gov. Sarah Palin.

Asked why, Van Susteren told us - as we held pen, pad, recorder and camera in hand - well, you know, at these things you can't always figure out who's on the record or off the record when you chit chat. And, she added, with all the background noise Palin could easily be misquoted.

Palin demurred.

But he did answer a question about how his new grandson is doing. "He's doing great," he said, "really good."

"Advice from me? Huh? I am flattered someone would think people take advice from me but this is fanciful.

Note that it is from a “source” — is that code for phoney? In this instance yes. This is why I hate “sources” and where journalism can be grossly unfair — in the law you have to step up on the witness stand and identify yourself and take an oath to tell the truth. You can’t do a “hit and run!”
"I have never given Governor Palin advice - she does not need it from me," Van Susteren wrote. " I don’t even have her phone number or her e-mail address."

Rome, N.Y.: Hi Chris and Fix Jr. Sarah Palin will not attend the correspondent's dinner. It's reported that Todd Palin will. Is it common for male political stars to send their spouses to important events as surrogates outside the campaign season? Does Todd Palin have any political hopes or chances?

Chris Cillizza: I don't think the First Dude has any political aspirations of his own.

In fact, I think he would be perfectly happy if his wife announced tomorrow that she wasn't running for president in 2012.

Todd doesn't seem to me all that comfortable in the national eye. Plus, he is already famous: he's won the Iron Dog like five times.
