Juneau Residents Attempts to Close Down Piper Palin's Lemonade Stand
A Juneau reader, and fan of Governor Palin (a rare breed in Juneau, I'm sure), tells me that Piper Palin has been running a lemonade stand in Juneau. And that a man named Chip Thoma is behind a movement to close it down.
Mr. Thoma leads a group of Juneau residents who are just "sick and tired" of the Palins and the tours that are conducted to the governor's mansion (something that has been occurring in Juneau since the first governor took office). It seems that Governor Palin is so popular with tourists that thousands of people are walking from the docks to the governor's mansion in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the first family. Mr. Thoma feels that this -- along with Piper Palin's lemonade stand, trampoline and buoy swing -- is "bringing down the neighborhood." It seems that Mr. Thoma doesn't enjoy the Palin children very much. Grinch.
The story gets even more bizarre. Mr. Thoma apparently used to spend his time on the docks in Juneau telling tourists to not bother visiting the governor's mansion because Governor Palin was "never in town." Now that Governor Palin is in town, he still has a problem. Go figure.
Mr. Thoma's group has decided to plant "stop tours" signs on the path from the docks to the governor's mansion.
My question to Mr. Thoma is this: Where would Juneau be without tourism and the state government? It seems that the answer is: Nowhere.
They complain when Governor Palin is away from Juneau and now they are complaining because she spends too much time in Juneau. Well, which one is it?
As for Mr. Thoma's attempts to shut down a little girl's lemonade stand... Grow the heck up, please.
And by the way, Mr. Thoma, there is a good chance that you are actually harming Juneau by urging tourists to stop spending their money. "Think Mcfly, think." A "stop local tours" movement in Juneau would be similar to a "close down the boardwalk" movement on the Jersey Shore -- it is just never going to work out.
Our Juneau reader is fed up with this group, and wouldn't be surprised if the the first family said, "Screw Juneau."
Governor Palin was forced to pay taxes because she did not reside in the Juneau mansion when it was under renovation. The governor took a lot of heat because she did not live in Juneau during this time. Now she is taking heat because she spends too much time in Juneau. It seems that some people in Juneau would be much happier if the state capital was moved to a different part of the state. I'm sure that Governor Palin would be more than happy to work out of Wasilla full time. She could even put out a nice welcome mat that says "Welcome to the Governor's Mansion" outside her Wasilla home, and invite all of those tourists over for the grand opening of the new mansion.

(I'm afraid that we are just going to have to shut you girls down.)

Too bad the man is so spiteful!
We have a saying for people like that..Schmucks!
It looks like Ramras has some competition for being the biggest jerk in Alaska. Is it legal to hang those Stop Tours signs?
Next ethics complaint, Palin's didn't report income from lemonade stand as income, and Piper did not have a vendors license, didn't have a health certificate, swing is not equipped with seat belts.
There could be dozens filed on this incident alone.
Maybe that's the Diva's next big "bomb shell."
It's a public street and a public house. How can local tourists not go take a peek? It's not like they are trespassing or entering private property. They're just walking through a public street.
I can understand not wanting reporters hanging around, but these are local tourists who brings money to Alaska.
Is the Governor reporting the lemonade stand profits as part of her income?
Is Piper paying her fair share of the taxes?
Who's paying for all the lemons?
The people deserve to know!
I bet Piper is gonna get investigated for not reporting her earnings to the IRS..come on, ya know it's coming
What kind of a schmuck tries to shut down a kid's lemonade stand? Yeesh! Does he steal candy from toddlers, too?
Oh, and what do you want to bet some ankle-biter will file an ethics complaint tomorrow charging that the Palins are trading on the fame of the governor's office to boost her daughter's business?
Honest to Pete.....
What about child labour and lemon rights? These people need serious help.
Absolutely incredible.
Violation of child labor laws. Andree McLeod will claim that she was unjustly denied employment at the lemonade stand. Leonade stand does not meet OSHA standards.
Man, Palin could be impeached over this one.
Just when you think people cannot get more evil, we find out scum can even find ways to lower themselves to even below scum
Someone needs to shut down Dear Leader's Kool Aid stand in Washington D.C.
Greg,
I need a job, perhaps Piper can hire me..but I do demand benefits..health, dental, the works :-)
Be fun to go up there take a tour and buy some lemonade just to piss the guy off.
OT kinda: Will some ALASKAN please go on ADN and speak-up for your Governor?!? The trolls are being hideous!!! Does ANYONE in Alaska give her credit for anything????
WOW...I don't know what else to say...
PDS knows no bounds!
Maybe Piper can file an ethics complaint against her mother for lack of employment benefits. Wait a minute, does piper have a SS number?
You are right Greg this truly deserves impeachment!
Sondra Tompkins will claim that no blacks worked at the lemonade stand, therefore proving that Piper Palin is a racist.
This may even be an illegal monopoly of the lemonade business. What kind of lemonade was used, could be an advertisement akin to the jacket.
So let me get this straight. When it comes to federal money, Alaska says gimme gimme gimme. When one of their own brings it in for them, they say take a hike? Things are getting weird up there.
The Palin women sure are in the left's heads!
Someone should make a “Piper’s Lemonade” Commercial, you can bet Greta and even O’Reilly will run it. That’ll show those people not to mess with Piper. Let’s have some fun with this.
Go Piper! The Palins are all so cool.

LadySam,
Those paid Obamabots who post on the ADN are NOT I repeat NOT living in Alaska..if there was some way to do an IP address check on them you will see that 99.99 percent of them live in the lower 48. During the campaign, I had heard from many people how Axelrod and Soros would pay people between 8-10 bucks an hour to post there so make people think that Sarah doesn't even get support in her own state
OT
Andrew Halcro has his old story about Governor Palin not being electable in 2012 up on FR.
Obama's brown shirts want to eliminate capitalism at a young age.
Beehive:
Love the irony, considering Halcro can't get elected himself.
OT, just got my Human Events, and on page 3 is a full page article written by Gov. Palin, Alaska's OCS Resources Critical to Successful Energy Policy. Includes a nice picture of her as well.

Governor Calls Obama’s Cuts 'Outrageous'
Proposed Budget Cuts for Fiscal Year 2010
http://www.gov.state.ak.us/news.php?id=1822
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 09-109
Governor Calls President’s Budget Cuts ‘Outrageous’
May 7, 2009, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today expressed great dismay over President Obama’s proposed budget cuts for Fiscal Year 2010.
The president proposes to cut millions from missile defense funding and to reduce spending for the Denali Commission and the Village Safe Water program.
“These budget cuts add up to about half of 1 percent,” Governor Palin said. “But while they do little to put brakes on the exploding federal deficit, they hit Alaska hard. I join our congressional delegation in their determination to see that Alaska’s unique challenges and its key role in national defense are not overlooked.”
The Obama budget would cancel a second missile defense field at Fort Greely and freeze the number of interceptors being deployed there.
“This is an outrageous move at a time when North Korea has shown its willingness to flout international sentiments and conduct missile tests,” Governor Palin said. “America needs a strong missile defense, and Alaska’s strategic location is invaluable in protecting the nation.”
The president’s proposed cuts also would weaken the Village Safe Water program, which has been key in reducing health risks through improved sanitation in some of Alaska’s poorest villages. Similarly, cuts to the Denali Commission eliminate job training programs in some of the most impoverished areas in the United States, eliminate village health clinics, and eliminate clean-up efforts for waste threatening water supplies.
Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell expressed concern about the Obama administration’s proposed reduction in oil and gas exploration incentives. “That would have the effect of maintaining our dependence on foreign sources of energy, which is contrary to the president’s stated objective. The higher energy costs for every citizen amounts to a tax on everyone. I hope the president will reconsider.”

Greg,
That article is a transcript of her public testimony in front of Salazar.
beehive,
Halcro is just pissed that Sarah kicked his ass in the last election. The dude is unelectable. he is nothing more then a jealous hack. He should go back under the rock where he came from
sarah brings in the folks
Good grief. The PDS psychos need to be locked up in an asylum, away from normal people. As if they're not busy enough trying to slime and bankrupt the governor every way from sundown, they spend their extracurricular time hatin' on Bristol and are now moving on to harrassment of Piper. Real sicko scum.
But this also touches an interesting topic, regarding tourism. Generally tourism across the country has been suffering greatly due to the economy. But I wondered if Palin's appearance on the national scene has had led to an uptick in Alaskan tourism. I was curious because whenever I've managed to have conversations with folks/strangers about Palin (often spurred on by my pro-Palin pinback buttons or bumper sticker), many of them start longingly reflecting on how much they've always wanted to take a vacation up there. Sort of a renewed consciousness of the state amongst many people, it seemed. Which, I thought might very likely lead to increased tourism, even in these tougher times.
I drove by the Governors Mansion when I was in Juneau about a year ago. I think that the square footage of the property is about the same as my house!!! I was surprised how small the property is. By the way, I was almost tempted to go over the fence and to jump on that trampoline. LOL.
Just went on ADN the junk that is being said is unreal...how this lady faces each day I don't know...
How has Willow managed to escape from being an unscathed target from these hateful people?
Wanna have a good laugh, someone posted this on FreeRepublic. I think this guy posting those signs did Sarah a favor..
Mr. Thoma's group has decided to plant "stop tours" signs on the path from the docks to the governor's mansion.
Now that's handy! I'll be in Juneau next week. All I have to do is follow the nice red "Stop Tours" signs to find the mansion! LOL
Maybe, just maybe, Chip is snorting the stardust.
Bless his golden heart.
gov. palin's latest tweet:

i think she likes getting her message out unfiltered :)
This truely makes me sad. There is just no way to explain the behavior of the Left but to describe it as evil. This wears me down emotionally. I get bummed constantly reading about the attacks against Sarah Palin and her family. Yet I know that she should feel 100x's worse but I would bet anything that her faith in God keeps her strong. I continue to pray for her and her family. God bless her, she really truely needs good people's support and prayers.
baboonking,
I think she loves using that TwitterBerry on her blackberry..She loves to tweet :-) and yeah, I think she likes the fact that she gets to post her own messages, unfiltered..straight from her own mouth
'Lakerfanalways'
A huge THANK-YOU to you...
For the up-teenth time most Alaskans are as disgusted with these nut-jobs as everyone else is.
-Give us some credit,darn it...
After-all: We had the WISDOM to elect Sarah governor...
And we still STANCHLY support her.
If you anyone thinks otherwise then Obama/Axelrod and their carrion-hoard win..
Alaska remains one of most conservative states...
CCRWM:
Approximately 80 people came to Wasilla City Hall today for our 'National Day Of Prayer'
(You know...The one that Obama 'skipped' and tried to render insignificant)
-Gov Palin and her family were especially in everyone's prayers...
We know here what she (and our nation) are up against as much as anyone...
Kenton that is good. She has such a great story and through no fault of her own, because he wanted to serve this country she loves, the Hatefilled Left is seeking her destruction...
Russo,
Send this story to Pat Forgery of the Juneau Empire...maybe he'll look into it and prove a write-up.
WOW...I watched Carl Edwards as he crashed into the fence a week or so ago...and he walked away..actually...he ran on foot to the finish line. That being said...I hope to see Sarah do the same thing!
What fools and petty people live in this world today! Sarah...keep running to the finish Line....we are here to support you! You have the car and you have the pit crew to win! Go Girl Go!
Kenton, that's great news, you are lucky to have such a conscientous and selfless servant as a Governor. We're looking to trade ours in, for a better model. Since he's jettisoned every principle associated with the party, pickings are kind of slim, unless he moves to the Senate.Clearly you didn't find her Lincoln Day speech,
'Castroesque' like that fool from the Corner, Hayward, who said that in the course of castigating Republicans from running away from Reagan. All I can say to that is "there you go again"
Someone on FR provided this link, it seems that Mr Thoma sued Gov. Walter Hickel in 1997:
http://touchngo.com/sp/html/sp-4863.htm
From the 1997 article linked by Greg:
Theodore 'Chip' Thoma is a convicted felon for possession of cocaine.
Thoma had 4 DUI convictions in a period of 10 years
(One can only guess how many he may had SINCE 1997)
From Gov Hickel's office (1997):
"This (Thoma) is hardly a pillar of our community..."
'Chip' Thoma is also a self-described 'Enviremental activist'
Sounds like Mr Thoma would fit right in with the Obama administration..
sarah needs to get on the local airwaves hit down for a long interview with ktuu. bob & mark.
Oh, for goodness sakes! Where do these people come from? This Thoma loser needs to go suck on a lemon!
Some of these creeps should be tarred and feathered just like in the old days. That would fix 'em.
Okay, I have to say it:
Juneau sucks.
More On 'Chip' Thoma (From The Juneau Empire)
Thoma also attended Woodstock in 1969, during "The Summer Of Love"...
-"He was given a job as a 'security guard' (heh! heh!) and spent the entire concert next to the stage"
What condition he was in during the festival is a matter best left to the imagination...
-You just can't make this stuff up..
"Thoma had 4 DUI convictions in a period of 10 years."
Hmmmm, well maybe if Piper started spiking the lemonade, he'd quit complaining.
Oh, wow. I needed a good laugh.
Since it has been voted to move the capital 3 times (or was it 4?) maybe it is past time to do so. This way, Juneau will only have Lemoncreek Corrections to support the town.
Most of us wouldn't mind being closer to 'where it's at' and a cool glass of lemonade is always welcome!
Matthew Continetti from the Weekly Standard is writing a book on Palin, heh heh.
http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=10326200
ANCHORAGAE, Alaska - Gov. Sarah Palin's popularity is sliding, but Sen. Lisa Murkowski's numbers are headed up.
The numbers are from the Hays' Research Group.
Political researchers often dispute numbers but Channel 2 News talked with two researchers Thursday who say the Hays Polls match what they're seeing.
Researchers also say the numbers come as no surprise.
Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Lisa Murkowski are the leading ladies of Alaska politics.
The governor has had the starring role on the stage of public opinion.
Palin regularly enjoyed unheard of popularity when she was first elected with ratings in the seventies.
Palin's positive ratings were at 61 percent in a March 13 poll with more than 40 percent very positive.
But in a March 25 poll, Murkowski edged ahead of Palin.
Palin's numbers have edged down in less than two months with a total positive rating of 54 percent.
The governor's very positive numbers are down 10 points to just over 30 percent.
"It hasn't reached the point yet where she's in trouble," said researcher Ivan Moore. "But the decline has showed no signs of slowing."
Moore says there are several factors including her difficult legislative session that included a bitter battle with democrats over Juneau's senate seat and the failure of her attorney general appointment to win confirmation.
"He was a deliberately extreme choice. That was what she was shooting for," Moore said. "But a lot of her support at the time came from moderates. And I don't think Wayne Anthony Ross appealed to moderates at all."
Moore says moderates were once a part of Palin's base but since her vice presidential campaign she's shifted harder to the right.
Moore expalined why Murkowski's numbers improved.
"She hasn't ticked anyone off, is what that boils down to," said Moore. "And when you tick people off, your numbers get bad."
"Sen. Murkowski isn't subject to the onslaught of negative publicity that Gov. Palin is on a regular basis," said Matthew Continetti, associate editor of The Weekly Standard.
The Weekly Standard is a conservative national publication based in Washington D.C.
Continetti is also writing a book on Palin.
Palin supporters say much of the bad public relations is unfair.
"The thing of course with Bristol, Levi and the baby," said researcher Dave Dittman. "Everything has been portrayed as being a hypocrite or unfit mom. It has to have a negative affect. I would be shocked if it didn't."
One thing the pundits do not dispute is that in the court of public opinion Sen. Lisa Murkowski is now number one.
"She is, I think without a doubt, with Sarah's slide, the most popular public figure in Alaska," Moore said.
Dave Dittman predicts that Sen. Murkowski's numbers will edge down as the election season approaches when she'll get hit with negative publicity from her rivals.
Gov. Palin's numbers raised eyebrows in political circles because they feed into the speculation about whether she'll run for a second term.
Dittman works primarly for republicans and says the governor's numbers, even at 54 percent, are respectable.
Dittman says a lot rides on what happens with the TransCanada pipeline and the AGIA process.
Pollster Ivan Moore says the governor doesn't need to worry yet but when her negative ratings are as high as her positive numbers then she could be in trouble.
Yogi 41
I've noticed too that Willow receives no attention. Proof that Sarah "dragging" her children around is no excuse for the media attention fixated on them. The middle child always gets overlooked. Thank goodness for her.
In a tragic turn of events, ex-hippie Chip Thoma becomes "the Man" and wants to shut down a little girl's lemonade stand.
"Down with the Man... er... the little girl."
"Power to the petty mean people!"
KentonAK said...
Theodore 'Chip' Thoma is a convicted felon for possession of cocaine.
===
HaHa!
Oh man, he really is snorting the stardust.
So Moore is trying to be dramatic but even he admits that Palin "hasn't reached the point yet where she's in trouble" and "doesn't need to worry yet."
Any guesses on what Continetti is going to be writing about? I get the sense that the neo-cons at the WS are big fans of the governor (sorry Mansour, heh heh). Goldfrab and Kristol are probably a huge reason why.
Take a look at that KTUU video...is Continetti in Alaska?
There's a Boor in the 'Hood
Tommy,
As bad as it has been for Palin the last 2 months her very negative rating has only risen from 20% to 24.8%. Which means she can still recover. I think the Ross pick hurt her more than the stimulus. Continnetti maybe in Alaska.
"She is, I think without a doubt, with Sarah's slide, the most popular public figure in Alaska," Moore said.
Oh hogwash. First, this guy is conflating approval numbers with popularity. Are the tourists flocking to Juneau for Lisa Murkowski?? Second, I'm not Alaskan, but do people up there really give a flip about Murkowski? I mean, what does she do, except ask for money? Are there chants of "Lisa Lisa" in the streets? Please. It's pretty easy to approve of someone you don't care about. If you disapprove, that means you've at least put some thought into the matter.
Continetti is probably there to research his book:
As reported by the subscription-only PublishersLunch:
* ... Matthew Continetti's THE PERSECUTION OF SARAH PALIN, a defense of the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate, portraying her as unfairly demonized by the media, the Democrats, and her own campaign, to [be published by] Sentinel....
i think the whole begich / stevens thing hurt sarah a bit. the media put out an inflamatory headline calling for begich to step down.
all she said was "i agree we need a untainted election."
this is why she needs to get out more and DO INTERVIEWS to avoid media spin and bullshit, this is why she has a twitter page now also.
Dear Friends of Sarah,
Well, I am just going to have to drink lemonade for the next few days...in honor of Piper!!
Update from the People's Republic of Berkeley:
I told you a few weeks ago about two African-Americans I encountered in the space of one evening in Berkeley, one a Vietnam vet and the other a young woman, a bank teller, who were both sympathetic to Sarah. Well, a little while subsequent to this, I met a young woman, probably a student, at a hamburger place about a stone's throw (or should I say a Molotov-cocktail throw!?!) from the Berkeley campus. She saw my "Palin in 2012" button, and said, "I have one of those too; they're rare in Berkeley!" And we exchanged broad smiles, and double-thumbs-up gestures!!! So, here is yet another hopeful sign that even in the BLUEST of cities there is some sanity and hope!! Green (or should I say RED) shoots, living, vital shoots, are pushing their way up through the concrete of decades of leftist propaganda and lies!!
God bless you all.
Exsurgite, socii, exsurgite qui pro Domina Arctoa pugnatis!!!
Sarah Nostra, Pulchra Pugnaxque!!!
SARAH in 2012!!

I agree with AKReport ; Gov.Palin has to fight the continuous media spin and misinformation the media are spreading about Gov.Palin and her family.
Gov.Palin needs do more interviews to fight all the misinformation and spin.
Unfortunately many people are not well informed and they believe all the smears the media are telling them about Gov.Palin.
Off topic.
On Sarah's facebook ,there is an invasion of trolls ; they have to get a moderator to edit the page.
I heard Piper pulled a Geithner and didn't pay SS and Medicare taxes as a Schedule C filer.
Maybe she can get a job in the Obama cabinet.
I won't even get into the EPA lawsuit.
Rumor has it a pitcher of lemonade spilled and it was declared a federally protected 'wetland'.
Interesting that Continetti is writing a book. Maybe he's playing the Hugh Hewitt to Sarah. Could we take this as an evidence that there is a behind the scenes effort to clean up Sarah's campaign squabbles and launch her anew? I'd love to think so.
I do hope that Matthew profiles the ongoing persecution, not just the campaign stuff.
I'm heading to Notre Dame to protest Obama. I'll be with Alan Keyes people.
Pray for me.
There is a good chance I'll be arrested.
OT, Sarah Palin makes list of Moms to Admire:
http://cityfile.com/dailyfile/5706
Mother's Day is right around the corner, and to honor those who have sacrificed so much only to watch in horror at the rotten people we've since become, Adecco Group—"the largest staffing agency in the world"—asked a bunch of people about the moms they admire most.
Apparently, Sarah Palin—yes, really—came up No. 2 for two of the three groups.
WTF abt that "yes, really"?

Just when you thought you heard it all.
Surprise!
A new JERK, steps up to the plate.
Actually I think that would make a good satire for Iowahawk. "How Piper Palin is ruining Alaska and the GOP" by David Frump
I laughed out loud, Erich. I hope Iowahawk tackles this one next. It would be easy!
Lemon rights, indeed, O Aged One!
I don't think the cokehead will get much traction. Ever since Piper's "hairstyling" talents came to the fore during her mom's veep acceptance speech, she won the hearts of millions. I don't care what she does. She can do no wrong!
Piper needs a Tax Accountant if and only if she makes more than $1500 at her lemonade stand.
She could bottle it and send it to me in New York State.
As an adult mentor and teacher I would sponsor Piper Pigtails Club like the Polly Pigtails Club I joined when I was her age. Piper's charisma at such an early age is an example for my neices.
Note: The Gov does not Twitter about Lemonade but I wish she would. Let's all check at

Man, I have heard it all.
This guy is an idiot. Why would you want to hurt the pouring of tour dollars into your community?
Why is Juneau so hateful? Is there any press in Juneau making the point that these people spend money while they are there?
That is just dumb. I have no nice way to put it.
Regarding Palin's poll numbers:
If she runs for guv. her numbers will shoot up once she starts campaigning. She is doing her job now, she is not thinking about polls but what to do for Alaska. Unlike Obama who is always campaigning. Once Palin hits the campaign trail and debates the smucks who are running against her, watch her numbers rise high.
This, in fact, is so dumb I think it merits another donation to SarahPac and the Trust Fund.
Um, yeah...I think Palin has definitely surpassed Ann Coulter in driving the nutroots crazy.
I love that about her! :)
p.s. Does Piper take credit cards, and does she do shipping? ;-)
And, of course, Piper needs to have a business license, W-9's signed and on file and must 1099 her contract labor at the end of the year...
Piper Palin now has more free-enterprise experience than Barack Obama.

CG,
race42008.com has more than several commentators that make VILE comments about Palin. Go check out Martha, knickersinatwist and illinoisguy to name a few... they attack her personally, not even on substance. Why aren't you over there asking them to stop it? Why come over here to lecture us?
And please name one personal and vile comment someone here has directed towards Mitt... has anyone here taken swipes at his children (like Martha and knickersinatwist do)? Has anyone here called him stupid or dimwitted? NO.
I think the only comments from this site are directed towards trust issues: Mitt has switched his positions quite a few times in his political career and it's natural for many potential voters to question that. We question his sincerity towards social issues as well as fiscal issues, since his healthcare plan turned out to be distrastrous for MA.
That is the extent of conversation about Mitt that I've read around here... nothing about his wife or children, as it is on pro-Mitt sites like race42008.
So if it's "unity" you want, start over there.
There is a blog called Hillbuzz that I'm pretty sure not many on this board visit often, as it's primarily a pro Hillary Clinton site and is run and operated by a group of gay guys. But they've always been extremely supportive of Sarah Palin and I check in on them sometimes to see if they have any new posts regarding her.
Well they apparently keep up with C4P because today they refer to this C4P article on Piper's lemonade stand and write a pretty witty response about it (assuming you don't mind the occasional gay reference points)strongly supportive of the Palins. It just continues to show how widesweeping Sarah's support is throughout this country

Capital move would devastate Southeast economy, new report says
Research group studies rate of job transfers
By Kate Golden | JUNEAU EMPIRE
A new report puts fresh numbers on a chronic Juneau fear: losing the capital.
"We'd lose somewhere between a quarter and a third of our economy," said Jim Calvin, lead researcher for the Juneau-based McDowell Group. "It has implications for virtually everyone in the community."
The report was paid for by the Alaska Committee, a group dedicated to keeping Alaska's capital in Juneau. McDowell Group researchers used state data on the workforce and location of state government jobs.
The relative importance of state government to Juneau's economy has dropped somewhat since a similar study in 1992, Calvin said. That's because tourism has grown so much since then. Cruise visitors, for example, doubled to about 1 million a season in the past decade.
Calvin said the study isn't intended to scare people, but to remind everyone that despite the growth in tourism, "we're still very, very much a government town."
There's no current bill to move the capital from Juneau, but the effort dates back to territorial days.
"We wanted to have this information available so we can be prepared, not as a conversation starter," said Lorene Palmer, president and CEO of the Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau, during Calvin's presentation at Thursday's Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Why would any of us put any stock in a McClatchy poll? I never believe any polls except for Real Clear Ploitics and Rasmussen.
napsalot,
We're good friends with the Hillbuzz guys. We've defended them in the past and like them a lot. Don't ever try to pigeon hole the ordinary barbarians. We're a diverse lot. We are not monolithic in our thinking. We tend to be rather libertarian. I would venture to guess that the one social issue that most of us agree on is a desire to see a culture of life, but we all probably even have shades of disagreement there when it comes to specifics.
Thanks RAM, I should have known you'd already been familiar with Hillbuzz, with their strong pro Palin posts in the past. They almost always make me laugh out loud with their posts defending the Governor while at the same time making me want to jump on a soapbox to cheer them on. This latest post regarding the lemonade stand is vintage for them. More than anything else I was implying the Hillary dedication as reason most wouldn't have it in their bookmarks.
By the way, since I haven't taken the time to address you before now, let me take the opportunity to pour praise all over you and your colleagues here running and contributing to C4P.
This site is incredible!!....and over the past several months has become without question the place to come to for all the absolute latest on all things Palin. I think I remember reading that you personally are a college student. If so, you definitely have mighty bright future - my hope is in a Palin campaign and presidential administration.
I am coming to Alaska on a cruise with 9 family members later this summer, all of whom are big Sarah Palin fans. My #1 goal would be to meet the Governor. My second fondest wish would be to find this Thoma clown and let him know, to his face and with very little delicacy, exactly what I think of him.
Can someone up there find out where he lives and post it here, so we can give him a triple dose of obnoxious tourist chatter?
It is obvious to me that Chip Thoma has an irrational hatred of Sarah Palin, and that he extends it to Sarah's children.
Only a first class creep would hate a child, especially one he never even met. I think that he hates Piper, or why would a child's lemonade stand offend him?
But the child's mother is politically active and he disagrees with her. She might become president and that scares him. So he hates her kids too, and judges them by a standard that is totally unreasonable. Objecting to a lemonade stand! ! ! What will these hate mongers think up next?
Over at Team Sarah we had a problem with trolls. One night, last January, the trolls went bizzerk. They put a massive number of offensive postings on the Team Sarah website, including satanic stuff, and gory child porn.
The next day there was talk on the Team Sarah website that this could be reported to the FBI, and that the FBI could track down the posters by their IEP numbers. The people who run the Team Sarah web site announced that Team Sarah reports all illegal activity to the authorities, including the FBI.
The trolls scattered like sheep after this detail was put up. We have had no trolls on Team Sarah simce then. All criticism of Sarah is soft and cautous, as if testing the waters. Seems like getting tough is the only way to deal with these people.
Meanwhile the hostility towards Sarah's children and the violent child porn used by anti-Sarah trolls, leaves me with the impression that Sarah haters have a propensity to be ill willed towards children in general. It really shows me what these people are like.
I've been wanting to take the Alaska cruise for the longest time. Looks like I'm going to have to get serious about it and make a special effort to stop and see the governor's mansion. Maybe even buy a lemonade. And possibly make a lot of noise on my way back to the ship.
Looks like the Juneau Empire called you out on this outrageous lie.
Eh, KentonAK-Don't know Mr. Thoma personally, but aren't your comments like the "pot" calling the kettle black? Just a wee bit self-righteous aren't ye?.
