The Palins Sit Down for an Interview with CL Magazine
(h/t Amanda K)
Christian Living magazine has an interview with the Palins on their website. Most of the article is the sort of biographical boilerplate we are familiar with, but the actual Q & A part is quite interesting.
Here are some excerpts:
CL: What was it like, running for the second highest office in the country?
Sarah: It was the biggest privilege of my life. (Todd heartily concurs.) It was an honor to travel this great country, to meet so many fellow citizens and to serve alongside John McCain, one of America's finest. I'm proud of how we gave voters a choice, because change was coming, no matter what. I truly believe our administration would have greatly benefited this country, but American voters did not choose us, and that's okay. It was not our time.
CL: Would you go through it all again?
Sarah: Good question. Right now, my goal is to do the best job I can for the great state of Alaska. And there's a lot to do here.
[...]
Hard work, sports and family activities formed the foundation of the Heath household. The entire family often competed in five-kilometer and ten-kilometer races. Hunting, fishing, skiing and camping kept them outdoors year-round. Everyone had chores. Whether they were weeding the family garden, stacking firewood or picking strawberries, Chuck and Sally's children understood the value of work. By age 12, each child was expected to earn his or her own spending money and save for college.
"I learned early on that no one was going to hand me anything," Sarah shares. "I knew that if I wanted something, I would have to earn it. My parents taught me to expect opportunities and to be prepared when they came. I knew, even at a young age, that was how I would progress."
Attending church shaped young Sarah as well. "Just like with everything else, Mom and Dad expected us to go church whether we wanted to or not," Sarah recalls. Her experiences there solidified a belief in something bigger and better than herself. At age 12, she made the personal decision to commit her life to Jesus Christ. "I knew even then that if I put my life in His hands, God would lead me and direct my paths. That decision still guides me today," she shares.
[...]
CL: Did you set out to have a career in politics?
Sarah: I grew up, politically speaking, during the Reagan era. I loved what he accomplished for our country. It's been my aspiration to make a difference in my community and in my state, and public service has provided a way to capitalize on that desire. When I wasn't serving in an elected position, I was immersed in my children's lives-involved in PTA, being a team manager and a coach, doing all those things that millions of moms and dads do every day. But I knew there were additional things I could and should be doing. So I was looking and waiting for that next opportunity, knowing full well that when it came, I would engage in it.
CL: Running cities and states takes time, right? So how do you keep it all together?
Todd: We just adapt. We don't get all wrapped up about responsibilities. If something needs doing, we just pitch in and do it.
Sarah: Todd is amazing. Whatever needs to be done, he just does it-laundry, dishes, changing a diaper, whatever. That in addition to keeping all our vehicles running, working on his airplane and doing all the things he loves to do. We don't waste time squabbling over household chores. We have a mutual recognition and respect for each other in doing the practical things necessary to keep a household running.
CL: What do you not do?
Sarah: You won't find us sitting back with our feet up, watching some mindless TV show. (She laughs.) And some people would say we don't socialize very much. If we are out and about, it's usually with the kids. Todd's Slope schedule keeps him away from home many months of the year. When he is home, it's precious. We seize the time to be together.
Todd: It's family first. For us, relax time would be out on the boat fishing or up at our cabin in Petersville. That's the type of family activity we really cherish.
CL: We've also heard about your participation in the annual Iron Dog competition, a rugged 2,200-mile snowmachine race across Alaska-a race you have won four times! Tell us about that.
Todd: I've been competitive all my life through sports and commercial fishing. This event fills that need to compete. It's also a special way to stay in touch with Alaskans. We stop at all the remote villages and talk to the kids and elders there-even if it's 3 a.m. and 30 below. It's really amazing.
[...]
CL: How did those negatives [i.e. the campaign media savaging] affect you?
Sarah: During the campaign, I was insulated. It was not until I returned home that my eyes were opened to various things coming from the mainstream media. But most hurtful were the lies spoken about my kids.
CL: As a Christian leader, how do you deal with such difficult situations?
Sarah: I look back at Scripture that reminds me, hey, I'm sure not the first to face this. Criticism will come. Unfair shots will be taken. The question is how are you going to react? I like I Peter 2:12. It says to keep your conduct honorable, so that by your good works, which are observed by others, God will be glorified. When I read that I know others have faced this before me. They face it today. Who am I to exempt myself from a principle like that? In spite of it all, I've got to live my life to glorify God. That's what I promised myself I'd do 30 years ago, and that's what I must do now-not just to talk it, but to walk it.
CL: But how do you pass that concept on to your children?
Sarah: It's very timely that you should ask that question. Just the other day Bristol and Willow were at Wal-mart and Bristol called me and said, ‘Mom, you will not believe what I'm reading on the cover of the National Enquirer!' At first I said, ‘Don't even waste your brain cells!' But she was upset because the inside story said that she used drugs and that I was trying to talk her out of getting married. It gave me an opportunity to tell her that if we let it, lies and criticism can consume us to the point of becoming paralyzed. We have to answer our critics with how we live our lives.
With Bristol, God turned a situation that at first looked full of despair and embarrassment into such a blessing for our family. She has the most beautiful baby boy! I remind her and all our children that we have to stay focused on serving God, putting our lives in HIS hands and seeing the blessings flow from some less than ideal circumstances.
CL: Another teaching opportunity came when your youngest son, Trig, was born with Down syndrome. How did this affect you?
Sarah: Trig did give us another occasion to not only talk the talk, but to walk the walk. It's easy to say that every life should be cherished and every life carries potential. But at age 43, pregnant and at 13 weeks along learning that the baby would be born with Down syndrome, the situation necessitated a decision: Would I live what I've talked and taught? Or would I take a different path out of these perhaps less than ideal circumstances? I'm so thankful God gave us the strength and optimism to welcome Trig into our lives. God has gifted us with this child who has given us a way to connect with others around our country who also have special needs children. It's been nothing but wonderful.
Todd: I thank God for Trig every day. We are certainly very blessed to have him with us. You know, life is about being willing to walk the walk, not just talk it. As we go along, it may be tougher than ever to make the right decisions, but we must try to do so. That's all we can ever do.
My thoughts:
1) I think the 'Cuda likes to give shout outs to Ronaldus Magnus whenever she can because she knows it makes us shout, "Barracuda!" ...and we love her even more for it.
2) It's apparent that the Palins waste no time. Did anyone happen to see her tweets from Saturday? She started in Anchorage, moved on to Fairbanks, then to Tanana, and eventually ended up in Juneau. As I noted in a C4P tweet, "Guv, don't you get any time off? Is your next tweet going to be from a plane over Homer as you dump water on the fires?"
3) Tabloid writers are lying scumbags. But you knew that already.
4) These Palins are good people. But most of you knew that already, and those of you who didn't...well, I don't know what to tell you.

wow. when i first started reading about the Gov back in Sept. it was very evident that she was a fervent believer in the Lord. but not a lot of info on the rest of the family and their beliefs were available. which is very understandable. i know when i prayed for the Governor, and i still do, i would always make an effort to pray for each of them from Todd to Tripp individualy. its so reassuring to know that they are a complete family living for the glory of God, which in my eyes is better than running for preident.
this is fantastic to read and it makes me love this woman and her family even more.
wow.
Instead of bashing Sarah, Bill Bennett should put her and Bristol in one of his books...
Love Sarah Palin and her bold, strong faith.
She is not afraid to voice her faith, even though many libs will call her names and say she is a religious wacko.
I respect Sarah Palin more than any other woman (outside of my Mom and sister) I know.
Nat,
Right on. As a pro-lifer, Bennett should understand that Bristol chose life. Would he have been happier if she aborted her baby? Or is he just being sanctimonious because Bristol made a mistake in getting pregnant? What a hypocrit and a pharisee he is. We're talking about a man who gambled millions away.
R.A....you are fast I read the interview was going e-mail and ask you if it could be posted on C4P...
This statement says
"It's a truth I learned early on and it carries me still today... Everything in our lives is grounded in a simple truth, that we put our lives in our Creator's hands, knowing that following His path ultimately will lead to our fulfillment and happiness." - Sarah Palin
Does anyone know when this interview was given?
It sounds like awhile ago.
I love to hear her talk about her faith. I don't know how anyone could handle everything that she has been through, in just the past year alone, without having faith in God.
She obviously seeks God's guidance, but isn't one who is going to overbearingly proselytize either.
Some people were talking crap about the good guv and I had to speak up. You're wrong, I said. However, they ignored me and I had to realize later that this is Michigan (liberal country) (sorry R.A. Mansour) and nobody listens anyway. :( Bummer. She is an amazing woman. But I think everyone knows that. :)
Piper enjoying the ride.

That should be says it all
RAM -
Bennett really bothers me, because he has set a standard of character=perfection, all when the man gambled away EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS.
Bristol made her "mistake," but she's doing everything in her power to make it right in every regard.
It's folks like Bennett that give conservatives the reputation of being moralizing blowhards.
The Palins never claimed to be perfect. What they have in spades is integrity.
She always comes across as so likeable and authentic in these types of interviews. The whole liberal/media caricature of her as some sort of right-wing hate monger is a house of cards. That house of cards will collapse very quickly when (if) she runs for POTUS and re-introduces herself to America on her own terms.
Nat,
Bennett really bothers me too. I still can't figure out what happened to him. Not that I care anymore. He's rapidly becomming irrelevant to conservatives.
Beehive,
In the article, the author says the interview was recent.
Wait a second. What the heck is Piper doing loafing it in the cart and making her mom do extra work??? That kid has more energy that a nuclear reactor. Piper, get up and walk hun!
(great pic btw)
It's this kind of honesty and integrity that will come across big time in her book. Only those who already hate her won't be won over, many sitting on the fence will move to her side, some who were doubtful will move to the fence, leaving only the real haters, like Chris Tingle, Keith Olbermouth, Radical Madcow, and their followers behind.
Gallup is not an outlier anymore!!

On the issue of abortion, would you say you are more pro-life or more prochoice?
(Pro-life/pro-choice)
Overall: 49/43 (41/49 in September 2008, 37/48 in October 2007)
GOP: 69/27
DEM: 34/57
INDY: 51/40
D/R/I split of 42/30/24
If there is one thing I am sure of regarding Sarah Palin she will not make the same mistake most politicians make which is once they get elected or well-known to abandon the folks who got them there.
First the Evansville pro-life dinner, next publicly coming out and supporting Carrie Prejean's right to free speech, then voicing her opposition to Notre Dame for inviting Obama and now the interview with Christian Living.
Does anyone see a pattern here?
The moral of the story: these folks will remain with Sarah come hell or high water; and Sarah knows she will need them by her side if she is to prevail in any future electoral contest.
"Sarah: It's very timely that you should ask that question. We have to answer our critics with how we live our lives."
Wow...the truth is in how we live our lives...
I remember being taught to pray for righteous leaders. I knew Obama was not ...I didn't think McCain was either but that was because I really din't know him and all I could remember was the constant siding with the Dems... then Sarah was introduced to us and it was as if God had wispered in my ear...the answer to your prayers... My husband was supportive of her immediately too. I don't care if people think I'm a religious fanatic...believe me I've had my share of sins and falling short...but I can see God's servant when He presents her. I've never become this supportive of a politician before...
I just totally love the way she mentions Ronald Reagan. It's what endears me to her most: that she is true to his philosophy and legacy.
TommyReport
What does outlier mean?
Serving others. Giving to others. Loving others. Honoring others. I didn't think I could think higher of her, but she just sent my admiration for her to a higher level!
Tommy,
That makes three now if you include the Pew Research Poll.
I posted in the open thread that same Gallup poll also has party affiliation tied for the first time since 2005.
Also a post and discussion about it over at HA:
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/05/18/hope-and-change-gop-even-with-dems-in-party-affiliation-for-first-time-since-2005/
Three WOWS... Wow,Wow,Wow
Live your life Honorably!.. and answer your critics by how you live your life!
Ever since witnessing Sarah's entrance onto the National scene and until now, she has continued to confirm her stature as an exceptional and extraordinarily different political figure....
One of grace and compassion that Fights with an unabashed furry for decency and the common good.
At times like these Im at a loss for words to describe the emotional connection to this family and what a glorious thing we are witnessing.
God bless you "Sarah From Alaska"... "The Storm that Is."
Tommy,
Thanks for posting that new poll. Awesome awesome news.
The Palin family is rooted in faith. I love their authentic Christianity. They are the salt of the earth kind of people.
good interview
todd seems like the perfect "dude"
I suspect thats why the lefty women hate sarah so much.
Jumping in here to announce that Lou Dobbs on CNN is RIGHT NOW having a face off between Barney Frank and Michelle Bachman!
Also, here's the GORGEOUS article with photos - and you can zoom the pix!

Scary!! I said the same thing about the Homer fire in the Saturday open thread.
Great minds must think alike. lol
The Palin family is one family that speaks volumes on hard work, is not ashame of their faith, their family and their country. Sarah is lucky she has it all, and the dems are so critical and so bent on ruining this womans life, if God has her in His hands, which no doubt he is listening to her, He will do more than open doors for Sarah and her family.
God Bless you Sarah!
Luv the Guv!
Sarah 2012!
I'm glad she turned down Coale's idea...
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0509/22681.html
Terrific interview.
How normal is she?!
Wal-Mart, working hard to earn your keep, keeping busy, chores, her Christian values, etc.
I adore her. I hope she does run 2012. She is savvy on who to do interviews with. How stupid of the McCain campaign in how they handled her.
Who's leaking this stuff lol... It's interesting...
Patty,
Coale is the one talking about it!!!
Let’s do some bias out of context editing:
CL: Would you go through it all again?
Sarah: Good question. Right now!
“What she really needs is somebody who has good political sense to move to Alaska,” said a Washington-based Republican who wants her to succeed. “And until that happens, she is going to continue floundering.”
I kind of agree with this....
Do you think Coale leaked this in order to soften Palin's image among democrats?
I'm sure Ram, VO, and Russo will give us their take in a subsequent thread later tonight, hahaha.
I was about to post about how nothing was happening! Gotta remember there are 24 hours to the day.
Why do I feel like Coale was trying to grift money from SarahPAC on Hillary's behalf? The idea is laughable on its face.
What would it be, a bribe to get Hillary to call off Carville and Begala? Because she has no standing with Obama's goons, Axe and Emanuel. Those are the guys to watch.
Carville and that crowd are has-beens. Noisy, but has-beens never the less.
By the way, SarahPAC must be SWIMMING IN IT for Coale to even suggest such a flight of fancy...
The problem is that she's not getting credit in Alaska for focusing on being governor.
Classy, down to earth family.
Sounds like something techno would say, hahah
They compare her to an incredibly gifted athlete with raw skills but no coach to help her develop a pro game.
“What she really needs is somebody who has good political sense to move to Alaska,” said a Washington-based Republican who wants her to succeed. “And until that happens, she is going to continue floundering.”

That makse no sense at all. Hillary's campaign has millions in debt. The most SarahPAC could give is 5K. What am I missing?
"Contributors who chose between heating their homes and sending in a contribution because they believe in Sarah would be crushed.”
Thank goodness Sarah didn't help Hillary with her debt. I'm surprised John Coale would even ask something so outrageous.
What kind of influence does he suppose the Clintons have when Zero and Co. seem to have stolen the show?
After that damning footage of Hillary with "the reset button" and cackling away when asked about the Maersk Alabama captain being held hostage at the time, I would've felt sick to my stomach if I had known I'd contributed to this twit.
Uh, John, Hillary was/is a devotee of Alinsky, just like Fearless Leader! She wrote her college thesis on him.
It is beyond galling that Slick Wilie can make mega millions doing a few speeches but they have to get others to pay their debts? Disgusting.
I felt the same way about Mittens in the primary. Even though he was the best of what was the left, I would never in a million years have donated to his campaign. He's a millionaire! If he doesn't have enough faith in himself to fund his own endeavor, I'm sure as heck not going to.
The folks in DC want Sarah to dance to their drum. She should stay faaaaaaaaar away from these kind of folks because they could care less about AK! They just want to dress Sarah up in an exspensive wardrobe and stuff her with talking points for their own agendas.
DB,
On her blog last week, Greta denied this story and called it laughable - for the very same reason you just posted. The max the PAC could give is $5,000.
BUT, what about that email from Meg to Coale? That pretty much suggests that at the very least, a conversation about Sarah retiring Hillary's debt occurred.
Techno and I went back and forth about this a few days ago, and Techno had a few good pros and cons to this ... one pro being that perhaps Hillary would give Sarah access to her donor list if Sarah agreed to this?
Of course, the biggest con to this is that those of us who donate to her PAC would be furious that money is going to Hillary's debt.
If Sarah wants Hillary's list of donors, I'm sure there's another way it can be arranged, but not through the PAC.
My contention is that Sarah doesn't need a swing coach if she is not prepared to fully engage the enemy at this time.
The most important thing is not to be UNFORCED ERRORS.
Contributing to Hillary's campaign to settle her debt would have been a gross unforced error.
Thank God, Sarah did not go ahead.
The fact that Coale would ask Sarah at all to spare up some funds from SarahPAC leads me to believe he knows something we don't know about the potential of SarahPAC and perhaps the size of Sarah's donor list.
Greta denied that her husband asked this of Sarah and made the point that $5K would be the max allowed and would be a drop in the bucket.
I don't live in AK, but to me Sarah doing a great job being governor of the state who elected her is not "floundering."
Sarah knows what she believes in, and that faith and family come first. That's what keeps her grounded, focused on the goal. That's why she is and will never be lured by the blandishments of high office. She's a conviction politician, with a servants heart, and that makes her utterly fearless, willing to challege the m.o of the President, break the back of the oil monopoliy ,god willing, one day go to toe to toe
with Putin,Chavez, Ahmadinejad & Co.It shows every time she chooses to appear in person, or through
a press intermediary. If she had one flaw, is that she really seemed back in the day, utterly without guile, but she's developed
a little tougher skin in the last eight months, sometimes a little less sparky, as they say.
I've run out of superlatives for this woman and her family.
