Gov. Palin Accepts Letterman's Apology; UPDATED: Coverage of the Rally

From Gov. Palin's official Facebook page:

"Of course it's accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.

Letterman certainly has the right to 'joke' about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction. And this is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America's Right to Free Speech - in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect."

Governor Sarah Palin

Update by JR: I believe that we should follow the governor's lead. She has accepted Letterman's apology. Tommy De Seno writing at Fox Forum:

I like Sarah Palin's view of things better. Forgiveness is divine. It shows intelligence is better than rage. It shows thought is better than feelings when judging... It shows Sarah Palin is smarter and a better person than the people who have been attacking her this past year.

So what did we learn from this past week? I think that the events of the last week have proven that conservatives need to fight back when they are slandered in the public arena; put the people making those claims or telling sick "jokes" on the defensive. Mr. Letterman was clearly in a deep hole, one he dug for himself. Now, clearly people can continue to pressure Letterman if they so choose. It is the right of the people to express their dismay with another citizen.

You know by now that I am a fan of quotes from Ronald Reagan. Here is one that I believe sums up this whole situation nicely:

When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat.

Supporters of Governor Palin and women all across the country made David Letterman feel the heat and forced an apology.

UPDATE by RAM: We certainly did make them feel the heat. We just received this letter from eBay:

Dear Conservatives4Palin,

I would like to inform you that eBay has no current advertising affiliation with the CBS Late Show with David Letterman. As part of eBay's regular online advertising, some eBay ads may have appeared on cbs.com.

These ads do not indicate eBay's support for particular shows, nor do they suggest support for the views expressed by Mr. Letterman.

We appreciate your initiative on these issues, but I assure you that eBay has no affiliation with Mr. Letterman's show.

Sincerely,
eBay Corporate Communications

Gov. Palin, as you may recall, likes eBay. She tried to sell Frank Murkowski's corporate jet on there. We appreciate eBay’s clarification.

We also appreciate that this week has been (forgive the cliche) a “teachable moment” for America. I think one of the obvious lessons learned was expressed by this billboard along Steese Highway in Fairbanks (h/t gringo grande):

The other lessons learned:

*
Sexism is wrong no matter who is the target.

*
Blind obedience to partisan ideology and hatred of Sarah Palin prevent some people on the Left from denouncing things they would normally protest.

* Honest,
fair-minded people from all political persuasions will stand up and be heard when they see something wrong. They are able to say, "Palin is my sister, too."

* Conservatives are
finally willing to organize and take a stand to defend one of their own. Whittaker Chambers once wrote that conservatives too often leave their wounded on the battlefield. No more. That ends now. Conservatives4Palin was organized in part because we would not allow a decent and sincere public servant to be vilified and defamed.

UPDATE II by RAM: The Daily News reports on the protest today. I'm sorry that we couldn't carry the livefeed. We had some technical problems and weren't able to connect with our video person on the scene. However, I'm sure we'll be seeing news coverage of it later today.

In the meantime, here's a picture from the protest:

Susan Wynalek, right, of Colts Neck, N.J., her daughter Stephanie, center, and son Brett participate in a "Fire David Letterman" rally to protest his jokes about Sarah Palin and her family across from the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York. (AP/Mary Altaffer)

UPDATE III by RAM: Coverage of the rally, including video, can be found here and here. Letterman isn't at all contrite. He is still mocking and full of disdain for Sarah Palin.

(Here's a list of
his sponsors.)

UPDATE by Daniel: (h/t TommyReport) Rasmussen conducted a national survey to determine David Letterman's favorable/unfavorable ratings following his "joke" about a 14 year old girl. Here are the results:

David Letterman Favorable/Unfavorable ratings on June 14-15:

Overall: 41/49
Male: 47/45
Women: 35/53
GOP: 20/75
DEM: 63/30
INDY: 35/48

Compare these results to his
favorable/unfavorable ratings from May. In particular, take note of how women, Independents, and Republicans responded after the "joke":

David Letterman Favorable/Unfavorable ratings on May 29-30

Overall: 50/38
Male: 49/36
Female: 51/39
GOP: 41/47
DEM: 55/32
INDY: 54/35

UPDATE IV by RAM: Here is some more video from C4Per Karen from the rally yesterday. View her coverage here, here, here, and an article in Human Events. The advice is no longer applicable, but the article is still worth reading for his sympathetic recap of what the Palins endured "at the hands of petty, small-minded liberals":

This decent Christian woman has served her God, her family, her hometown and her state in an honorable fashion. She answered the call last year to have her good name placed on the ballot with the hapless John McCain when he needed a true conservative to bolster his lackluster poll numbers with the Republican Party he had disappointed so often over the years. She pulled adoring crowds of 20,000 to 60,000 loyal GOP faithful who believe deeply in the conservative principles of their party platform. He was lucky to get 1,000 people in one place to listen to his watered-down pabulum about earmarks and amnesty.

And what thanks did Palin receive? Country Club Republicans turned up their noses at her, while members of the elitist news media, acting as unofficial press secretaries for the Democratic National Committee and dutiful lap dogs for the Obama machine, obediently attacked her and played “gotcha” journalism whenever they interviewed her. They called her stupid. They said she talked funny. They ridiculed her home state, her experience, her non-Ivy League education and the fact that she was a former beauty queen. They clucked about her husband being some sort of separatist and snickered about her Evangelical Christianity.

They accused her of corruption in Alaska and initiated investigations against her. (By the way, did you hear them trumpeting from the rooftops the recent news that she was cleared of every false charge? Neither did I.) Finally, while wallowing at the bottom of their scum bucket, her enemies decided to go after her children.

Every American family deals with personal issues. For the Palins, they were under a microscope when it was revealed that their 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was pregnant. The hyenas on the left could hardly contain their glee. This was just too good to be true! Everyone from the cackling crows on The View to the late-night talk show hosts could not believe their good fortune. Especially David Letterman.

The campaign ended more than seven months ago. The loony left now has its socialist messiah in the White House and a solid majority of Democrats running both Houses of Congress. The Palins have returned to their beloved Alaska. And still the left attacks the governor in every cheap and tawdry manner imaginable. Especially David Letterman.

I'd like to share another successful sponsor reaction, this one from Hellman's Foods. Here is what I received in my inbox this morning:

Hello,
Thank you for contacting us regarding your disappointment with the program content which contained a commercial for a Unilever product. We never wish to offend anyone and your opinions are appreciated regarding this subject matter. Advertising for Hellmann's or media buys are done months in advance and unfortunately we can’t foresee issues in the media before they come up. We appreciate the feedback from our consumers and we’ve decided to pull our online ads from the Letterman show from our advertising schedule moving forward.

We hope that this information has given you a better understanding of our advertising practices. Thank you again for taking the time to share your views with us. You can be assured that your comments will be considered as we continue to challenge our perceptions about what is appropriate for us in today's environment.

Kind regards,
Your friends at Hellmann's/Best Foods

So for anyone who's continuing the campaign against the sponsors, add this as a small victory. And please, take the time to write a thank you to the sponsors who are doing the right thing; in this case, Embassy Suites and Hellman's Foods.

Brian Davidson June 16, 2009 11:11 AM

Classy Lady.

And well played. Very happy to see her resist over-reaching.

LT June 16, 2009 11:26 AM

Truly a classy acceptance, but the way she made it relevant and in a context beyond herself was beautiful. She continues to amaze.

Please, make sure someone keeps tabs on the sponsors who have responded favorably to our concerns. They will be my first choice of who gets my business. Perhaps make a banner or link on the site with it. Maybe call it the "Sarah List" or something.

Jenny June 16, 2009 11:26 AM

I must say this is a great job by the grassroots and a first step in establishing that conservatives are not pushovers. We need to take an activist role to stop junk like this from happening. As the guys at Hillbuzz say, republicans need to take an active stand.
A very classy Sarah accepted the apology, but it hurts any mother to hear her daughter being ridiculed in that way. She still has the wounds. Letterman is still a jerk.

Random Numbers June 16, 2009 11:29 AM

Darn. Here I was scoping out the best location for a protest for Brinker International's (On the Border) Dallas HQ this Friday. I've never tried to organize a protest and was looking forward to the attempt.

PEC June 16, 2009 11:32 AM

The one bad thing about this is on www.Sarahpac.com yesterday, Sarah posted an article written that reflected her sentiments. It was strong and shows where she stands. It was overshadowed by this Letterman flap.

bestwins June 16, 2009 11:39 AM

Great statement by the Gov.
Good job, grassroots!

bestbud June 16, 2009 11:45 AM

Gov. Palin, as usual, aspires to a higher standard of decency and honor from public and private individuals, and that aspiration also includes decency and honor with her forgiving heart.

Accepting on behalf of all women, as she directed her, "it's not funny", rebuttal, speaks volumes about her selfless championing for others.

Letterman, having two or three so called apologies over a week's time, dug a hole that he still occupies, because he didn't willingly and quickly have the decency of conviction to correct the wrong...

His latest apology was in fact, a forced one, as a parent would have done to a CHILD, unable to recognize their misdeeds.... Letterman has 62 yrs. of life experience but sadly they only amount to, 62-one year experiences.

techno June 16, 2009 11:48 AM

The last part of the rights to free speech being secured by the US military was a sentiment that Peggy Noonan expressed about two years ago in a WSJ column.

Peggy, are you going to claim plagiarism? I hope you haven't sunk that low.

Gina June 16, 2009 11:50 AM

Atta girl, Sarah. Show that you're bigger than he is.

(Just one thing: I hate the word "evolve" in this context. I've always hated that kind of usage of it. It seems to give too much credit to the social Darwinists, and imply that impersonal forces create change rather than genuine repentance and transformation of the heart. I know Palin doesn't believe that, but that's how the word sounds. But that's just a small quibble.)

Gina June 16, 2009 11:51 AM

Forgot to add, I hope Willow's doing okay. All of this must have been a strain on her, even with two good parents to help her through it.

Nancy June 16, 2009 12:03 PM

Letterman kept digging himself into a hole, and Governor Palin just buried him with another classy, gracious, perfect pitch statement.

Hey, D.C. know it alls, who has been shown to be white trash?

Governor Palin you never fail to disappoint. Thank you for being exactly who you said you were.

narciso June 16, 2009 12:06 PM

She has class, and grace, and courage ,for a dozen such men and woman. As usual, she made it bigger
than herself. Noonan & co, seems to have forgotten all of that, her last column shows clear signs of that massive blindspot,

katiejane June 16, 2009 12:16 PM

Gov Palin showed class by accepting Letterman's apology even though it was only slightly better than his previous attempt.

Now the discussion has moved away from his smear about the Palins into what a poor job he did of apologizing. So now he's been shown to be poor at jokes and sucky at honest apologies.

Illinois Conservative (Whitney) June 16, 2009 12:18 PM

To reference the Webathon theme song mentioned yesterday, "Fight Like a Girl" by Bomshel, which has become my new favorite song in recent weeks. One line which fits Gov. Sarah so perfectly:

"With style and with grace, kick @SS and take names."

Her response to Letterman's "apology" fits this perfectly.

Lipstick June 16, 2009 12:20 PM

If Letterman had any class at all he would have called Gov. Palin on the phone and apoligized directly to her the day after all this happened. Then it would have been a private thing. They when Palin was asked about it she could have said that Letterman had called her privatly to apoligize. Would have shown that he really felt bad about it. But, I am living in adream world on that on aren't I ?

Lipstick June 16, 2009 12:23 PM

Good thoughts

Indie Footprint June 16, 2009 12:37 PM

She is class and her statement both accepts the apology and continues to speak out on the problem of sexism run rampant.

Yogi, thanks for posting that. Like LT, I too, think that there should be a list of provable advertisers who have stepped up to defend against the likes of Letterman and misogynistic entertainment.

Like others have suggested, keeping tabs on these companies and thanking them as well as supporting their products over the co. who have no moral conscience would be encouraging to those co. and continue to keep them honest.

So guys write to them and thank them. Tell them you will support their products in the future.

I know the editors are really busy with the webathon right now, but eventually, the co. who did the right thing probably deserves a thread and make them easily recognizable.

The only thing is, we should be very careful and not attach Sarah's name to anything she is not involved with and she is not involved with anything we are doing. Sarah brought the insidious nature beneath these jokes to our attention and spoke out. But it is the grassroots who are taking it up from there. So I caution attaching the Palins' name to anything she isn't even aware of, and in the best of intentions, causing her more problems.

Just my 2 cents.

LT June 16, 2009 1:00 PM

Indie - point very well taken about not attaching her name. Please disregard that portion of my suggestion :-)

JR - De Seno also opened his article with that critical line from the Lords Prayer. "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us."
Sarah as is known is a devout Christian. When somebody asks for forgiveness you forgive them. Note Forgiveness does not mean forget. Also Letterman must have repentence. That means he needs to change his ways.

After writing to Olive Garden, I got this reply:
"Thank you for expressing your concerns about Olive Garden and allowing us an opportunity to respond. We understand your concern about Mr. Letterman's inappropriate comments. Olive Garden screens all network television programs and we plan schedules accordingly, especially in regard to shows with objectionable content. Some shows, like The David Letterman Show, are taped on a daily basis and there is not an opportunity to review the content prior to airing. The content of the dialogue on the June 8th show is not consistent with Olive Garden's standards and values. We have joined many of our valued guests in voicing our concern to CBS, and we will adjust our plans accordingly as we have done in the past when such situations occur. Your feedback will certainly be taken into consideration as we review our future advertising schedule. Again, thank you for contacting us with your comments, and we hope you will continue to think of Olive Garden as a place to visit with your family and friends. "

BTW. He still never really said he was sorry, just that he was misunderstood. Isn't that the same defense most perps use?

Reece June 16, 2009 3:12 PM

Someone on Team Sarah said that in order to view the webcast of the Fire Letterman rally, we have to get in line early because viewership will be limited. How do we get in line?

The Aged P June 16, 2009 3:29 PM

Above all this has been a signal that the Governor has a natural and graceful authority. Some in the media are beginning to recognise this and are according her respect - there has been a subtle but significant shift of power.
Even on C4P there have been comments upon the quality of advice she gets from her staff. These last two weeks have been a triumphant return to the national stage so full marks to the Governor and her advisors.

Holly June 16, 2009 4:42 PM

I second Reece's question. Where can I watch the live webcast?

Emerson C June 16, 2009 4:53 PM

I think the last week was a 'tipping point' for Governor Palin at national level. While she had plenty of material for publicity (the Exxon/Transcanada deal), Lettermann literally played into her hands, even though she would not have wished it. In Lettermann, the leftist elite overeached very badly. Lettermann will survive a little longer, but his days are numbered. Every liberal commentator, who tried to defend Lettermann has egg all over their faces, especially Tina Brown.

juju June 16, 2009 5:19 PM

The live webcast seems to me like Sarah's Speech in Indiana (Right to Life). I have been on here waiting.
In that Indiana speech, the video
blank (or whatever you call it) was up before her speech and then you just clicked on and waited.

I really think something has gone wrong and we will just have to wait and see it on U2 or whatever.

Mountain Mama June 16, 2009 5:24 PM

It's up to Sarah Palin how she responds to the Letterman "joke" about her daughter. Forgiveness is honorable and Christian, when someone truly apologizes----and Sarah has chosen to accept Letterman's apology as genuine. No doubt she's happy to move on with her life; she has more than enough stress as it is (ethics violations: what rot!).

Well, I mean no offense to anyone here, especially not Sarah Palin, whom I fully support; I continue to work HARD to help her succeed and become our beloved president.

But none of us serves ONLY Sarah Palin----and I do not believe she can accept an apology on anyone else's behalf. No offense.

See, I think Letterman still does NOT understand what he did and said, and has not truly apologized yet. (You'd think he'd have grown up by now, but no-ooo....)

Notice: even during his "apology," and after he'd delivered it, when the camera began to cut for commercial, he made a face and a "Blow-this-crap-off!" gesture to signal that the whole "apology" was bogus. Check out the tape....

So Letterman does not grasp yet what his "joke" revealed: that a societal bias ENDURES against the intrinsic value of every human being, especially young women and children everywhere. He mocked them by suggesting a fantasy of filming a sex act between an athlete and a VERY young woman, for viewing right there for the audience at the large sports event: as a "highlight reel."

Yes, this "joke" has political context, to slam a specific political opponent where it would hurt most: against her child.

But his "joke" was disgusting and perverted to all women and children everywhere. WE ARE NOT SEX OBJECTS for taping, viewing, and degrading----and rape or sexual voyeurism is never funny! And it's sad and scary that his immature audience laughed at his sick "joke."

Worse, in BOTH of his two fake "apologies," Letterman blamed others for misunderstanding his "joke." How disingenuous! They were simple to grasp, and simply perverted.

Even his routine last night was self-serving and whiney. Everyone's attacking Poor David: BOO HOO! What a wimp.

Yet somehow he found the strength to make several vicious slams against stupid conservatives! HE hasn't stopped his attacks, so he isn't genuinely ashamed or transformed----which is what would prompt me to accept his apology.

So I hope people attend the protest rally and keep the pressure on Letterman.

Finally, I was sad to see two of the protest rally's organizers on Fox News last night, when they reported that they had verification that only a few hundred supporters planned to attend the rally. What!? Only a few hundred people see the larger implications of Letterman's "joke!?"

He has great influence, and should be suspended. Please support and attend the rally, and keep the pressure on CBS to censure him!

sarah palin rocks June 16, 2009 5:39 PM

Well, the liberal MSM has started attacking Sarah for her acceptance of David's apology.

Just now on Hardball, Chris Matthews gave a blistering critique of Sarah's acceptance saying it was a bunch of nothing and sounded like something "issued from the Kremlin." He made it sound like he had a hard making sense of her statement. This is the Sarah is dumb and can't put together a coherent statement meme.

Tina Brown of the Daily Beast just really savaged Sarah on the panel saying she should just "Shut Up!" Brown mocked and ridiculed Palin with Matthews calling her "Nixonian" and "catnip for cable tv" unlike "dignified" women such as Mrs. Eliot Spitzer or Hillary. Ms. Brown HATES Sarah - let there be no mistake.

Surprisingly, Roger Simon of Politico defended Sarah from the attacks on her from Matthews and Brown. Simon had complimentary things to say about Sarah for a change. He agreed with Sarah on her fighting for her kids against what Letterman said.

Yep! No matter what Sarah does the MSM will attack her for it. I can imagine what Keith Olby will say tonight. So now the meme will be to mock and ridicule her acceptance of David's apology and make Sarah out to be the insincere one. That's pretzel logic.

Mountain Mama June 16, 2009 5:59 PM

Hiya, SPR. I suppose we can give thanks that through facing down Letterman on this issue, we really HAVE had victories and made important inroads among the leftwingers. For once, they DID "feel" how the Palin family did, and since liberals care most about "feelings," their hearts were moved, for once, in alignment with NORMAL people: with us and Sarah. Praise God!

Now, if only David Letterman and these other liberals could understand....

katiejane June 16, 2009 6:21 PM

I agree with Mountain Mama - Gov Palin took the high road and perhaps the correct one politically however IMO it is foolish for people who objected to Letterman's performance to just pat themselves on the back and think they showed those libs..

I also agree that Letterman really doesn't understand what the big deal was. He only sees it as a problem us "dumb yokels" have with perception. His second apology was slightly better than his first but IMO the only thing he is sorry about is that a lot of angry people are contacting his sponsers and his network

When the Left can't even give Palin credit for a gracious acceptance of what was really a p. poor apology, we need to decide whether it is really good to fold every time the Left displays the least civility. Republicans don't need to sink as low as Democrats but we do need to understand how they fight and react appropriately.

"Whittaker Chambers once wrote that conservatives too often leave their wounded on the battlefield. No more. That ends now."

Hear, hear!

I think we should expand this beyond Letterman. Every time Olbermann, Maher, Matthews, or any other media troll slams Sarah we should let their bosses and sponsors know that we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore!

"Thank you for contacting the Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. Information Center. It is always important to hear from our consumers, and we appreciate the time you have taken to contact us.

Johnson & Johnson takes a firm stand regarding the quality of television programming in which its commercials appear and support the National Council for Families and Television.

With the help of our advertising agencies, a conscientious effort is made to screen all programs prior to broadcast. As a result of our screening, we have frequently withdrawn ads from television shows in the past and we will continue to monitor programming in the same manner in the future.

Your concern will be directed to network personnel. However, the most effective comment on programming is direct action by viewers. Therefore, we would urge you to communicate your feelings directly to the network.

Again, thank you for your interest in our company. Should you have any comments or questions in the future, please contact us via our website or by calling our toll-free number, 1-888-638-5242. Our specialists are available Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM EST and will be happy to assist you."

Yogi41 June 16, 2009 7:56 PM

Ellen,

I got that same message a few days ago; someone typed a lot of words just to say nothing.

As for Ziegler and others who attended the protest, good for them. I can't speak for Ziegler, as to whether he was using this for his ego, but I do know that those who showed up to protest were doing it from their heart.

It is not to hurt Gov. Palin; these people see a larger issue at stake here. I understand that most on this site, including me, do not want to do anything to hurt Gov. Palin or her political future. In fact, this site's mission statement is just that: full support of Gov. Palin and I enthusiastically embrace that.

However, don't disparage those of us who actually want to hold the media accountable for the way it treats women, conservatives and Christians. The double standard is appalling and many of us want to try to effect change. This protest and continued campaign to hold Letterman accountable beyond a weak apology is going to continue.

Curth June 16, 2009 8:02 PM

Greta has a short video from the protest posted on her site. It looks like more than fifty people were there.

Yogi41 June 16, 2009 8:03 PM

Looks like Letterman made more jokes about Gov. Palin and the protesters at tonight's taping, but they were very tame and mostly aimed at himself:

"The good news is Sarah Palin has accepted my apology. She also accepted a $500 gift certificate from Lens Crafters. I thought that was a nice touch," he said. "I tell you, I was quite nervous about this whole thing, and I was really nervous about an apology to Sarah Palin, so when I did get my confidence up and my nerves to settle down, I rehearsed by apologizing to Tina Fey. That helped. That was a big help. [Applause]"

"Now when I call your name, please come forward and pick up your apology. [Laughter, applause] I wanna get through this as quickly as possibly so you folks can get to the 'Fire Dave Rally.' [Cheering] It's nice that people hate me who are no longer just part of my immediate family. My son, he's telling everybody at school that his father is Conan!"

Im still of the opinion now, as before, that Obama and the MSM are the absolute best thing to have happening for the GOP, and particularly Sarah....

It all goes to magnifying and delineating, what has evolved now to stunning clarification, the 180 degree opposite direction the Oboma Dems have taken this country.

Republicans have the opportunity of a life time to bounce back quickly into contention and be a force to reckon with come mid-terms and 2012.

The question is, will they fumble the ball they have been given and blow the opportunity?

My take is that Sarah Palin is uniquely positioned, with exact credentials, to counter the 180 degree wrong direction and take control of team Republican.

She's running her own unique show now, not bound to a stale running mate, and knows exactly who she is and what she represents..... underestimating her is what she thrives on and has the record to prove it.

A little smack down as, 2nd banana, may have hurt at first, but she, like no other Republican, has the VISION of an eagle to scope her path ahead.

CruelaDev June 16, 2009 9:45 PM

I agree about Ziegler...he needs to step away. He keeps calling into certain shows...in AK.. and I can tell...they are getting a little annoyed. Back away from the Palin table John.. your feast is over for now...

fwiw June 16, 2009 9:52 PM

???What did she mean??? She thinks our military is risking their lives to 'secure' freedom of speech in America--does she understand whats going on in the Middle East?? Isn't our free speech due to the Constitution not the military???Why was nothing said about the SNL joke about incest (Todd being the father of Bristols baby?????i think that was as bad as you can get.. She's just whipping up her crowd so they'll send more money, this is just the beginning of what she'll have to face in the next 3 years, she brings it on herself, but what the heck it gets her in the spotlight!!! By the way, when is she going to talk about important issues, like immigration etc.

Yogi41 June 16, 2009 10:17 PM

Why does every troll post in hyperactive sentences? Jeez...

juju June 16, 2009 10:22 PM

fwiw: When you were trolling guess you didn't see on the Liberal sites, because your job is to troll on Gov.
Palin's sites, the libs were claiming that Gov. Palin was trying to stop Freedom of Speech.

Guess you didn't get the talking points on that one.

Yogi41 June 16, 2009 10:31 PM

Good job by Greta on her coverage of the protest. Long segment and people called out his sponsors. Kudos, Greta!

C. David June 16, 2009 10:35 PM

I suppose any day now we'll hear Palin's apology to President Obama for implying he's a terrorist. Oh wait, she's too classy to accuse someone of something like that.
=====================
"When the Cuda calls off her wardogs via an acceptance of Letterman's apology, the Sapwolf stands down and heels as the obedient canine that he is."

This has to be one of most pathetic things I've ever heard anyone say, but it does prove my argument that conservatives don't think for themselves.

=====================

I stand corrected. THIS is the most pathetic thing: "If Sarah is OK, I'm OK since my goal is to support the Great Governor."

I love President Obama, but I don't blindly follow what he says. I still have my own mind and judgment. Sad that you don't.

=====================

Dave's self-deprecation (when he never should have apologized) show's that he's the real class act, as opposed to Palin using her daughter and fake anger as a PR stunt.

Dave's self-deprecation is also what has made him funny for so long, a point lost on a group of people who don't understand irony.

Uffda June 16, 2009 10:46 PM

C. David,

We love Governor Palin because we have actually researched her positions and agree with them, rather than simply believing the caricature that the media painted.

This Letterman thing was a gratuitous and sick slam, and our response was a demand for common decency.

Now, if Palin ever goes off on a policy I don't like, you'll hear from me. But our devotion is based on knowledge. It is not blind.

Yours apparently is, since Palin never implied that Obama was a terrorist. She said that he "palled around with terrorists." And he did, William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn. That is a fact.

Uffda June 16, 2009 10:49 PM

RAM,

I read the article, and I didn't have a real problem anything he said. As far as I'm concerned, Letterman is okay as long as he stays away from the sick stuff.

Now I say circle the wagons over the MSM spin of Palin's apology acceptance and get Maher.

Uffda June 16, 2009 10:50 PM

Regardless of the spin, I love how it's all over the news that David told Sarah he was sorry. She totally won this one.

fwiw June 16, 2009 10:58 PM

Yogi41--Sorry about my sentences, but you all seem to understand Sarah's word salad, so whats the problem? No-one can answer any of my questions? Oh well, Just keep sending Sarah more money, she needs it, even though she has a 7 mil. dollar book deal in the works, and you all don't seem to be hurting by this slow down in the economy...remember everything bad happening to Sarah is Obama's fault, he sure must have some power to do all that..

Dear Trolls,
This is a pro-Sarah Palin website. You have plenty of other places to go and spout your propaganda concerning how much you don't care for Gov. Palin. I don't go to anti-Palin websites and get in arguments with you. While reading the comments here, I am sick and tried of having to scroll through what you have to say. I support Gov. Palin. Clearly you do not. Somehow I don’t think we’re going to be changing each others’ minds. Please leave—now.

Mountain Mama June 16, 2009 11:17 PM

Fwiw:

Our security would derive from the Constitution, if the libs on the Supreme Court would bother to FOLLOW the Constitution. Instead, they "imagine" a "trajectory" of "values" from the Constitution, then they twist their fantasies into LAW. That ain't Constitutional.

So Sarah is right: the military DOES help us secure our freedom of speech.

The Constitution helps as our freedom's foundation----but only so long as the Supremes just do their job, and quit legislating UN-Constitutionally from the bench.

Got that?

AmeriCuda June 16, 2009 11:26 PM

Ziegler is quickly turning into the Ziegfeld follies.
I appreciate that he supports the governor, but his over the top self-promotion has become cartoonish.
Your movie was great John, really, but I do wish you would take a breather.

Yogi41 June 16, 2009 11:37 PM

In all of the coverage I've seen regarding the Letterman protest in New York, I didn't even see John Ziegler there. If he was there, I'm certain, being the self-promoter that he is, he would have been all over the news channels talking it up... the fact that I didn't see him in any of the segments about the protests tells me he wasn't there.

This was purely a grass roots effort and those people showed up and delivered.

Torrey June 17, 2009 12:08 AM

It is ironic that MSN etc. are telling Sarah to shut up for her acceptance of the apology especially since the media were the ones who asked her for it. This is according to the John Zeigler radio show today, apparently she was getting off a plane and the media asked her if she would accept his apology.

They're basicly saying Mr. Letterman's "jokes" are fine by them. They are going to cont. the ads because they want to reach broad demos. They are going beyond the middle of the road responses I'm getting from most advertisers. They are activly defending their track record which they believe is just fine. They don't consider this a blemish. That's sick...I responded back, but I don't think it will matter. They're picked their side already.

I don't recollect if this article was brought up here on C4P, but this article was brought to my attention tonight. It was placed on Conserv-a-rant.com, AKA That Darn Republican, a couple of days ago. It is titled "Op-Ed: Sarah Palin... Lover or Hate Her, She's Made a Place For Herself"

http://www.conserv-a-rant.com/2009/06/op-ed-sarah-palin-lover-or-hate-her-shes-made-a-place-for-herself.html

Uffda June 17, 2009 1:17 AM

I honestly think we should let the Letterman thing go now.

Anything further will just boost his ratings.

If we wanna fight the women fight, I think there's bigger fish to fry.

From the casual viewer's perspective, Sarah won. Push it further, and Letterman will win.

Now, if he does it again...no mercy.

SarahWeddington June 17, 2009 3:14 AM

BTW, it seems most of the furor was over his comments about her daughter, but it shouldn't be forgotten that also called her a slut. That was just as offensive, to her and to all women. Somehow the slut comment seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle and you don't hear about it. He's never apologized for that, and even bragged about it the next day. I guess you can't focus on everything, but that comment really should have gotten more attention and criticism.

A slut is basically a synonym for the same word that got Imus fired by CBS. Now Dave didn't add the racial qualifier that Imus did, but it wouldn't have made sense to say "straight-haired slut". I hope no airline ever advertises on his show again or CBS since they obviously approve of calling flight attendants sluts.

But, at this point, he's apologized two or three times, and to keep pushing his firing may seem like overkill. Imus was fired because a number of black groups demanded it, it wasn't seen as a political act on behalf of one candidate(although Obama did say he should be fired. I guess he wasn't into saving jobs back then). If a number of women's groups like NOW and others demand Dave's firing, he'll be gone. BUt if it seems as if Gov Palin is on some vendetta to have him fired, I think she'll end up looking petty for focusing on something like that. It's somewhat unbecoming of a nat'l political leader to engage in a feud with a late night tv host. She made her point, and he was chastened and humbled.

And I have a feeling that if he comes anywhere close to calling a woman a slut again, or joking about underage sex, he'll be finished. He just better hope the cardiac surgeons in NY aren't conservatives or Republicans. That could end up being a problem.

Those Rasmussen #s are interesting. His #s among women went from +12 to -18, a 30 pt swing. Among the GOP -6 to -55, a 50 pt swing. Among indy's from +19 to -15, a 32 pt swing. I bet among white women the numbers were even worse, probably more than a 40 pt swing. Thaht shows the power of Gov Palin, especially when the media was trying to cover for him and excuse him. This was all grassroots based anyway and to make the impact it did was a big deal.

It's white women that will put Gov Palin or any other woman for that matter in the WH. They would have put Hillary in, and they would have put McCain in last yr if the economy hadn't imploded 6 weeks before the election. There was a 20 pt shift among white women after the Palin announcement and it was growing until the market tanked and the whole Lehman Bros collapse trigged the worst economic crisis in a generation.

Anyway, the drop among women shows that there is still a lot to be gained there and that she represents something that other potential candidates(Romney, Huckabee, Barbour, etc..) simply can't. The harnessing of the white women vote is the GOP's best path back to power.

Yes they had a great crowd protesting that Letterman should be fired. Wow 15 people plus 35 reporters. What does that tell you.

C. David June 17, 2009 1:41 PM

Palin never implied that Obama was a terrorist. She said that he "palled around with terrorists."

Uh...that IS implying that he's a terrorist. Ridiculous then. Ridiculous now.

And can you honestly say that the comments I quoted show independent thought? There's no one I give unquestioning approval of, which is exactly what the two posters I quoted are doing.

C. David June 17, 2009 1:49 PM

"Now, if he does it again...no mercy."

You have to have power before you can have mercy. Be as angry as you want. It's your right. A healthy democracy requires dissent. But I can tell by the chain letter replies you got from the sponsors that they aren't taking you seriously.

But you all are taking yourselves far too seriously with this issue. Over 30 years, Letterman has made fun of thousands of people (though no one more than himself.) When somebody complains and holds protests, he just uses it for comic fodder. He comes out looking great. I'd actually prefer you keep the protests up so the rest of America and I can laugh at you.

A June 17, 2009 4:53 PM

Did Letterman violate Federal criminal law?

This is a Federal Court of Appeals decision:

http://pacer.ca4.uscourts.gov/dailyopinions/opinion.pdf/064288.P.pdf

It involved an adult getting from an adult, cartoons showing fictitious (cartoon) adult - child sex.

The sentence was 20 years in prison, although other matters affected the sentence.

The court said:

"In essence, Whorley argues that text, standing alone, may not
constitutionally be prohibited as obscene. He never explains
why, however, nor does he cite any authority for his argu-
ment. Indeed, he overlooks the traditional formulations of
obscenity, which have never depended on the form or medium
of expression.
In Miller v. California, 413 U.S. 15, 24 (1973), the Court
defined obscenity in the context of "works," which "taken as
a whole, appeal to the prurient interest in sex, which portray
sexual conduct in a patently offensive way, and which, taken
as a whole, do not have serious literary, artistic, political, or
scientific value." And in Kaplan v. California, 413 U.S. 115,
119 (1973), which was decided the same day as Miller, the
Court made clear that "works" include both pictorial represen-
tations and words:
Obscenity can, of course, manifest itself in conduct,
in the pictorial representation of conduct, or in the
written and oral description of conduct. The Court
has applied similarly conceived First Amendment
standards to moving pictures, to photographs, and to
words in books.
The Court there affirmed the conviction of a book store pro-
prietor who sold a book made up "entirely of repetitive
descriptions of physical, sexual conduct, ‘clinically’ explicit
and offensive to the point of being nauseous[, with] only the
most tenuous ‘plot.’ Almost every conceivable variety of sex-
ual contact, homosexual and heterosexual, [was] described."
Id. at 116-117. "

"Accordingly, Whorley’s arguments that 18 U.S.C. § 1462
is unconstitutional as applied to the cartoons and e-mails
charged in Counts 1-20 and Counts 56-75 are readily rejected. "

Monday the court denied en banc review.

http://pacer.ca4.uscourts.gov/opinion.pdf/064288R1.P.pdf

The cases is discussed here and early, but linked here.

http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2009_06_14-2009_06_20.shtml#1245192215

One judge dissented Monday, saying:

"Dwight Whorley was convicted on twenty counts of violating [the federal ban on transporting obscenity in interstate commerce] for communicating by e-mail with consenting adults about their personal and private fantasies. The offending e-mails were purely textual and did not include any images. They implicated no commercial interest and, although the e-mails described fantasies about sexual conduct involving children, the children referred to were imagined, not real. It is undisputed that the e-mails did not involve any victimization or exploitation of actual children....

... I am hard-pressed to think of a better modern day example of government regulation of private thoughts than what we have before us in this case: convicting a man for the victimless "crime" of privately communicating his personal fantasies to other consenting adults."

-------------
Letterman spoke of video replay of sex with one of 3 people, 2 of which were under 15. (My understanding is that his latest claim (I don't believe it.) is that he did not think any of the 3 daughters were at the game. He did not name a daughter. 2 of the 3 are under 15.

He did it on TV, not by internet, but CBS rebroadcasts it by internet, I believe, and it is transmitted by cable.

--------

My question is a serious one. Very serious. Did Letterman break criminal child obscenity laws? It may be a different law than Whorley violated, but a similar one.

Maybe someone here knows. I don't know.

A fake story about adult-child sex seems to me to be remarkably similar to the images or words which contributed to a 20 year sentence for Whorley.

The Aged P June 17, 2009 7:11 PM

mmmmmmmmm..C.David..."palling around with terrorists" actually meant exactly that. Obama was not a terrorist but was happy to be associated with a couple who had not only been terrorists in the past but were still proud of their "achievements" when they worked with Obama. As we were constantly informed by the media of his academic brilliance it is beyond belief that he would not be aware of their past. In other words he took a conscious decision to work closely with them when many fellow Chicago Democrats wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
Does that mean he was a terrorist himself? Of course not. Does that mean he approved of terrorism? Probably not. But Gov Palin and others brought up the issue to question the man's judgement and that was quite legitimate.
Remember also that initially Obama claimed Ayers was just one of many Chicago faces around at the time who he glimpsed at a distance at political functions.
He lied.
Obama had a much closer working relationship with Ayers but for some reason the press and the networks never followed that up in depth....I wonder why?

Young 4-Eyes June 18, 2009 2:33 PM

aww...R.A.--what's the matter?
can't handle a little opposition truth?
It's good to see a preview of how a Palin administration will handle criticism: just shut down those voices and ban them from any public forums.
Your banning of my posts changes nothing: Sarah Palin is still a joke, and you weirdo followers of hers will remain the butt of all jokes, even from within your party....

David July 1, 2009 10:06 AM
