Governor Palin's Seward House Address: Washington, DC Stands In Our Way

From the speech:

We never need to fear that though we're not a perfect nation, that we must apologize for being proud of ourselves.

And this:

Our resources are there, and the time is now, right now, and we're ready to develop. And we already provide about 17% of the U.S. domestic supply of energy, but we could do more. And it's time. But believe it or not, what prohibits our development, what stands in the way, is government in Washington D.C.

Alaska can actually quench America's thirst for hydrocarbons for years, and reduce energy costs, and reduce the dependence on foreign sources of energy if given the opportunities that America was founded upon -- remember that was the exploration, and the innovation, and the production, and the hard work.

[...]

But drilling seems to be such a sensitive issue right now. It’s a political one that many don’t want to take on because it’s not an easy issue even though the choice really is quite clear. You can provide jobs and energy independence and national security by drilling in your sister state. Or you send jobs and you send our money to foreign countries asking them to ramp up production of energy sources so that we can import it – some of these countries not necessarily liking America – that is the choice.

[...]

Now Alaskans get tired of hearing that Washington bureaucrats know what’s best for us. So we push and we fight and we challenge decisions made inside the Beltway when they’re not in the country’s best interest. And we know decisions being made lately, we believe are not in the nation’s best interest, not when they can’t lead us to energy independence. So though it seems that there are some attempts to try to make some from Alaska to sit down and shut up, we’re not going to sit down and shut up, we’re going to spread the message.

We persist because as Alaskans we are independent thinkers, who like Central New Yorkers, we seek to do what is right, not what is just easy. And it seems that when government moves out of the way, that’s when progress can happen.

Here is some more from her speech:

I recently turned down, or vetoed, stimulus dollars that were tied to implementing...some mandates from the federal government trying to take away more control of our local governments, and our families, and our businesses. In this case, implementing universal energy building codes that some claimed after I vetoed the money “oh, she’s just trying to make a political statement.” And, no, I’m actually trying to use some common sense here, and some may be uncomfortable with that, but it is the right thing to do.

You know the response I got when I vetoed these dollars? “Girl, are you crazy, the federal government is handing out free money and if you don’t take it another state’s going to spend it.” Oh this borrowed, debt ridden, government growing money – it is not free money, and taking it takes away anything that is free.

So many in Congress warned the states about the ramifications of accepting the money, and most legislators went around governors who didn’t want to take all the money, and they resolved via resolutions to take the money anyway. But opportunity for development and local control, that is what’s taken away when all of these dollars are accepted without questioning them, because, believe it or not, there are fat strings attached to this borrowed money. See that attitude of free money is wrong.

Finally I have just conceded, I’ve said ok, I just won’t claim that there are strings attached. I won’t use that term anymore. Because the more we dig into these mandates, these connections that the money would have that we would spend coming from the federal government, including the string attached to these dizzying federal debts that we are handing to our kids and to their kids to pay off for us – I can’t say strings attached anymore, now I say they are ropes...They are debt building, binding, controlling ropes and it is bigger government that ultimately will take away our opportunities and our freedoms.

And now precedent says government will bail you out, depending on the decisions that you’ve made if you’re not prudent with your business dollars. Government will buy you out. Anyone need a car? And this is a problem because we cannot afford this government largess and control and unrestrained spending. I don’t think that’s what Seward had in mind. And I do not believe it’s the will of the people.

Now the strings attached to the stimulus dollars [are] really just the tip of the iceberg (attached to the newest federal education standards – before the latest ones have even been fully measured). It means more centralized government and less local ownership.

And now you and I, we own GM – well the U.S. government owns the great stake in it. But who are we becoming more and more indebted to? It’s China. So at this rate you have to ask yourself who may really own the car industry ultimately?

And universal health care – more government control in medicine and its availability and our choices of providers – again, I don’t know if that’s what Seward had in mind.

And then we heard just a few days ago, someone says that the White House may want federal control over Alaska’s proposed natural gas pipeline. Can you imagine turning over a free market project to big government controlled by Washington? That’s not a good option.

And Washington now admits that, well, it looks like the only solution to all of this spending and the control is to take more of your money, which takes away more of our opportunities and our freedoms and more of our control from our villages, and our cities, and our businesses, and our families. See now there’s talk now of a new value added tax... It’s a fancy name for a national sales tax. Now to me there’s nothing value added in any tax, unless another tax is simultaneously reduced.

So here’s the caution, but here’s also the hope. We have to hang on to the hope. Some days it may feel as though we’re almost selling our collective soul to other countries who are so heavily invested in our future now that we stand to be mere puppets on their string, or maybe those are ropes too. And it’s just so tough to just stand by and hear “Don’t worry, shh, just – Washington knows best.”

We’re hearing that about things like Alaska’s missile defense system – missile interceptors stationed in Alaska where we are so strategically located. Our missile defense systems there – they do help secure all of you. And as Seward well knew, Alaska’s neighbors are not New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Ours are foreign countries, and you can see the foreign countries from Alaska. See, Seward knew that we would have these unique challenges, but also that we could provide solutions quite uniquely. We have maritime issues and the Russians test our military air might, and we’re facing oil and gas territorial issues in the Arctic as other countries are scrambling to figure out who owns what, and they’re staking claims under seas – claiming under seas energy resources right now.

Because of our geographic location and proximity to nations such as North Korea, Alaska plays a key role in America’s security. In fact we’re home to the largest ground based mid-course defense shield in all of North America. And yet Washington thinks it’s best now to actually cut the defense spending in Alaska by hundreds of millions of dollars. Now that’s an odd priority there – when North Korea just launched six short range missiles and transported its most advanced long range missile to a test site to launch in, well, their dictator seems to claim, in about a week. The missile can reach Alaska. We can be in a position of strength. Reducing Alaska’s defense readiness in these perilous times is a show of weakness. It’s not a sign of strength.

I will defend my state and maintain its strength for you and argue with every ounce of my being for Washington to pay attention. And that is not always easy, but it’s right. And it’s clear to many that some of our priorities as a nation are kind of reversed, and it’s my imperative, it should be all of our imperative, that we get our government priorities right because if they’re misdirected obviously America is going to turn into something we don’t recognize. We all need to pay attention.

[...]

You know there, like here, in Alaska, we’re a hearty folk and we are independent and we believe the roots of are country – so deep, so strong – they are what we need to cling to, and clinging to them, yeah, that includes our clinging to Second Amendment rights and to our faith in God. Many of us do cling to that strong faith in God, and it is under God, in Him do we still trust.

Thanks Mel. See is good.

That was an amazing speech! Every one of her speeches seems to have an wonderful balance of Alaskan emphasis, appropriate criticism of Washington, optimism and humor, and focus on whatever the topic is at hand (the pro-life movement, Ronald Reagan, William Seward etc).

jimr3 June 6, 2009 8:17 PM

Just watched her entire Auburn speech and my reaction is WOW! This is even better than the Reagan intro speech.

Anne June 6, 2009 8:25 PM

So, where is Sarah to next? Tomorrow is the autism walk, and then off to DC?

We're working on getting the video in sync, by the way (the original source was out of sync). We wanted to get it posted as quickly as possible, but we'll replace it with a version that is in sync as soon as we can.

jimr3, I totally agree with you. I just watched the entire speech (don't worry, Mel....hearing the words is what's important). It seems like she took the speech at the Michael Reagan event and honed it. WOW....THIS speech was an absolute home run IMO.

Nancy June 6, 2009 8:39 PM

She's definately a keeper.

Doug (formerly DB) June 6, 2009 8:39 PM

WOW! She is so awesome! I can't say anything else other than to lament the fact we have to wait 3 and 1/2 more years until this idiot Obama gets the hell out of here.

hrh June 6, 2009 8:45 PM

Did anyone catch the part where she said she has some great news about the gas pipeline project that she can't wait to get to share?

Oh my, now I can't wait to hear it!

She's having energy meetings in TX and DC this week so maybe that's to finalize whatever the good news is. Can't wait to hear.

It's nice to have something to look forward to in the this era when every day I dread what Obama's going to do next.

I was kinda' surprised at the booing over the mention of universal healthcare. I thought blue NY might go for it. But she got a great response for all of her conservative points at this nonpartisan event.

I guess the country still is center right. :)

I love that she's added the line about the will of the people being imposed on Washington. That seems to be getting a good response. Keep that one in ...

JeanA June 6, 2009 8:45 PM

With each speech gov. Palin is adding a little more but at the same time not much.

It is like she is moving forward slowly.

Auburn NY is in Cayuga County

In 2008 Cayuga County, New York was won by Barack Obama with 53% of the vote to Republican John McCain's 45%.

so 20,000 in non-red county is pretty good.

Cayuga County has about 82,000

if you crunch the numbers.

she could win that county in the primarys for sure.

but I think most of the palin folks there were from other countys too.

I predicted a year ago after McCain lost that she would, in time, develop into a lethal candidate. You are seeing the outlines of that in this kind of speech. This reeks of "housewife giving a speech" and bleeds authenticity. Would I prefer Reaganesque cadence and greater polish? Yes, but it's not time for her acceptance speech yet.

Point is: it is a Middle Class Populist speech that is filled with Conservative Substance!

Rush will build a shrine to this woman on his show. Trust me. She gets the whole Atlas Shrugged thing instinctively.

And there's not a streak of meanness in her. Voters will wonder why she's being attacked so viciously!

Nancy June 6, 2009 9:41 PM

The battle was joined August 29, 2008. Sarah Palin: "Get out of the way, I'll do it."

The debate was started on that day, between Barack Obama and Sarah Palin.

He has the spotlight, the media, the elites, the money, the machine.
She has what the other side fears. She has the rebuttal to all that he is doing, the charisma to bring waves of people against what he is doing, the ability to stick the knife in without a hint of malice toward him, and even does it with a smile. We smile along with her because we see what she is doing to him. And wonder who else in Washington would do this? That's the problem, we were looking in the wrong direction, the rebuttal is coming from the Great State of Alaska. It was just going to be okay with the elites on all sides, that it was McCain, then the next white, male RINO would step in when he lost. A vast line of the same, for as far as the eye could see.

He goes to other countries and apologizes for what we have supposedly done.
She gives speeches back here in America to just folks, saying we don't have to apologize for what our great country has done.

He is almost apathetic to what North Korea is doing.
She sends out tweets and press releases saying keep our defenses strong, and Alaska is ready to be the defenders of the nation from this threat.

He tries to look plausible on the issue of life at Notre Dame.
She has already lived it, spoke about it, defended it, worn her heart on her sleeve in a speech about it.

He wants to intrude in every aspect of our lives.
She pushes back, trying desperately to defend against it in her own state.

He thinks he knows better than us.
She thinks we know better than him.

August 29,2008, the day after Obama gave the speech here in Denver, Sarah Palin was announced as the vp pick and it all changed. It will never be the same again. And I thank God for that!

hrh June 6, 2009 10:03 PM

Beat me, reds, ha!

I agree with what he says at the very end about her speaking quickly and sometimes talking over her applause lines. I think that shows her humility in not basking in the attention but wanting to get to the next point. "Get out of the way, I'll do it" lived out in her speeches. Ha!

But I think she should let the audience enjoy getting into it. I think she will as she goes on.

Contrast that with the monotonously slow way the TOTUS speaks. He wants - and believes - that everyone is hanging on his every word so. he. must. drag. them. out.

I wonder if someone on the web somewhere would have the audacity to put up TOTUS's and our next POTUS's D-Day speeches next to each other? Two speeches, same day, very different! With a vote, which one do you like better?

The debates between these 2 will be quite entertaining. She'll give him a left cross, a right jab, and an uppercut, then she'll smile at him, and he'll be doing his whole, "uh, um, well" routine. She'll be playing Jeopardy!, quick answers, he'll be playing Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, deliberate, which answer is the best one answers.

This was a great speech. Much better than the one with Michael Reagan.

No teleprompters.....

She has a great sense of humor and really can smack you around with a smile....

We have to bring common sense to government. Time and time again, she said how out of touch Washington is.

I loved how she said she will concede and stop saying "strings attached". She will start saying there are ROPES attached.

I listened to the speech a few times and wow did she smack them around.

Love the speech! Love the Guv! She really has made the decision to just move forward no matter what. I'm sorry I don't remember who it was that pointed out that in the Reagan introduction her comment of "if politically I die, I die" was likely a reference to Esther's decision to just go forward and do what she knew was right, even if it meant perishing. The Guv's going to just keep trusting God to light her path wherever it leads.

No matter what happens, what hate the MSM throws at her, the lies they tell on her, the misquotes they use, the taken out of context, the bogus ethics charges they put on her and the financial burden that brings on her. No matter, she is willing to do it, even if she dies politically.
In a weird way, that has to be a burden lifted off of her.

Then, he'll end up having to defend her, and he'll get more questions about all of her activities the last few days, than the speech he gave to some people, that really wished Governor Palin had been at, to give a speech.

I just read his comment over at HA. Here it is in full:

"I was there in Auburn. She’s as wonderful as she always is.

After her speech at the party behind the Seward House she was shaking hands and signing autographs. She asked if I would like my “Conservatives4Palin” shirt signed. I was like a deer in the headlights. Duh, duh, (come on like YAH I want you to sign it). So now I can’t wash the shirt again. Its going under glass with a frame for the wall of my barber shop. There is a lady there who likes Sarah so maybe it will brighten her day.

Also, I got a photo taken with her and Todd. They both seemed delighted with the shirt, especially the part that says “We’ve got your back, Guv!”. I told her I was the guy in the front row at Evansville in the auditorium who when asked if they fed us, I waved my hand over my forehead and said “It’s terrible Sarah.” She remembered that.

Great weather, great people, nice town, and I even got a high-five from Todd from the SUV window as they pulled out.

Her speech really touched on the 3 main issues of energy, growing federal government with the economy and defense.

She is solid gold. If Obama continues his struggles, she will beat him. There were a few women I talked to that voted for Obama. They said they might vote for her if she runs in 2012.

She is not gonna sit on the sidelines and let Obama and the Dems destroy the republic. She cares too much." (Sapwolf on June 6, 2009 at 10:52 PM)

Does Palin have a Kitchen Cabinet of advisers? If she doesn't then why is that? Does she feel like she can't trust anyone?

Is 2010 Palin's reintroduction tour? Which networks will she go on?

My prospective: I think it's better to spend a couple of years planning out your campaign and preparing yourself for a long campaign rather than getting reelected in AK.

Lipstick June 7, 2009 12:36 AM

Wow!
Sapwolf is gonna need another shirt. How cool is that?

Sounds like Sarah and Todd are well aware of C4P.

I have never considered myself rabid before and have never foamed at the mouth, but hey, I am a dangerous ultra right wing conservative so why not?

ZH June 7, 2009 12:36 AM

Great speech.

Gov.Palin is a unique politician.

When she speaks ,I listen; with other politicians I change the channel.

Perhaps it is because I feel she is speaking from her heart.

Patty Hewes June 7, 2009 12:38 AM

I think they are probably referring to this roman political figure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cincinnatus

"His immediate resignation of his absolute authority with the end of the crisis has often been cited as an example of good leadership, service to the public good, civic virtue, and modesty."

Lipstick June 7, 2009 12:40 AM

Sarah can do it all imo. She can easily win reelection in 2010 to be a two term governor AND prepare for and run for the nomination in 2012.

I believe she is an overachiever and does things the hard way, I don't see her sitting out an easy (imo) run for guv in 2010, but I am not advising her so who knows?

She needs that second election and be a sitting guv while campaigning for POTUS, adds more credibility. Obama will have (although bad) 4 years a s POTUS, Sarah needs a second election as guv.

Nancy June 7, 2009 12:41 AM

"Wolverines", well if we bite, although rabid is in the eye of the beholder besides the obvious Red Dawn tie, they were my high school's mascot. You know if they hadn't try to demean a wife and mother, and conscientous figure with a 'servant's heart', maybe we'd be a little morelackadaisical.
I kind of doubt it, but it's worth a shot.

She managed to wrap all her main themes into this speech, as she did at Evansville and Anchorage.
Newt from the Think Progress link on memeorandum, had to segue into paganism, which probably has some
truth to it, but try digging out of that one. Who else would drive me to fly up to CPAC, to listen to State of the State speeches on far way stations, to actuallycontribute
any of my meager funds to such an effort, and to be a "Broken Glass partisan" if need be. Not any of the other candidates, and the opposition instinctively understand
this now, if they didn't then.

Patty Hewes June 7, 2009 12:50 AM

I don't think so. It's easier to do certain things when you are near Washington DC. You have the brightest political ops in the business near you at all times. I bet that none of them would freeze their butts in AK.

It will also be easier for Palin to build relationships and attend significant events...

She can organize more effectively. She can court the "republican elites" behind the scenes while maintaining her outsider status.

She can speak out on national issues faster without the AK timezone getting in the way.

Who knows, Maybe I am crazy... All I know is that she has tremendous potential but as a realist I acknowledge that her brand took a massive beating in the last selection... opps election sorry.

I hope she realizes that and puts in some good work. She can gain a lot of respect from a lot of folks.

I JUST WANT HER TO SUCCEED!

CodaCuda2012 June 7, 2009 12:54 AM

I just hope Sapwolf doesn't mind me posting his comment over here. I would like to know if Gov. Palin actually know about us and this site.

Hey Sapwolf did you ask Gov. Palin if she knew about C4P?.

bestbud June 7, 2009 12:54 AM

Another big WOW!.. what else can I say...
Sarah's consistent in the presentation of herself and her message for America, consistent in her love and devotion for the people she serves and consistent in her faith that God created us to live and have liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

She is still my one and only political figure that possesses a pureness and honesty beyond reproach....God Bless her and Family.

Videmus Omnia June 7, 2009 12:58 AM

Tommy -

Cincinnatus was an ordinary Roman citizen (a farmer) who was given dictatorial power by the Romans in order to confront a crisis.

He accepted the power, defeated the crisis, and then resigned the power in order to return to his farm and become an ordinary citizen once again.

He was George Washington's role model, and his legacy is incredibly important in the history of our Republic.

Maybe it was for an event she went to on Friday night?

Greg June 7, 2009 1:57 AM

Let's see, Monday Gov. Palin's statement regarding the killing of Tiller, Tuesday her statement about Pvt Long, Wednesday her speech at the Reagan event, and Saturday 20,000 people turning out to see her in Auburn, and her great speech at the Seward House. That looks like 4 homeruns in a row. Sunday the Autism walk (my bet is that there will be a lot more turning out than last year,) and I'm sure another terrific speech at IGHL gala. Ever since Evansville, and even before, she has had an unbroken string of successes. I can feel the momentum building, 2012 can't get here soon enough.

You can bet that Romney, Huckabee, Gingrich and all the others have read of the 20,000+ who turned out in Auburn, knowing that at no time have they ever been able to attract anywhere near that many, and this wasn't even a campaign event. How can they compete with that? Gov. Palin is going to suck all the air out the primary season when it comes to these guys.

Without really doing anything overtly political, Sarah displays her prowess. Of course, she has to improve this or that but which other Republican is flawless? beltway buttboys need to get some air.

The one impressive thing about all this is how exquisitely she has all this planned. Oh tomorrow, she and Rudy are going to the match, I hope there's lot of pics and video because seeing the two of them together will make my heart stop. paperson June 7, 2009 3:03 AM

Tommy: the Fagan claim. Is that the surprise Gov Palin was alluding to in her Seward Museum speech? I thought it might be the Murkowski amendment to get Federal backing for the loan to build either gasline, but now this makes it even better. That would be a WOW for Gov Palin.

wisetrog June 7, 2009 3:03 AM

Tommy, it just says she is invited. She doesn't need to go there.

TommyReport June 7, 2009 3:04 AM

Wise,

From what it sounds like, Rudy will be in Alaska before she is, hahaha.

There may be big news with exxon and transcanada...probably the reason why she's headed to Texas. Given her comments in the fundraiser, Fagan's article, Murkowski getting the loan guarantee hiked up, and the president of TC Canada willing to go on record in the News-Miner, things are looking up for this project.

TommyReport June 7, 2009 3:10 AM

Paperson,

The Murkowski amendment cannot be a surprise since she already announced it. Palmer from TC seemed overjoyed in his comments in the News Miner. Denali didn't seem too happy as they did not provide a comment.

Who knows with Fagan's motivations but the guy does have contacts with Exxon.

Notice in the speech that she hit those who wanted to turn this project into a federal project. I hadn't heard her come out against such an idea prior to today...which suggests that she's pretty confident right now with everything coming together without the federal government taking control of it. I have a hard time believing she would strike such a posture unless she had some good info.

TommyReport June 7, 2009 3:11 AM

Paper,

Here's the key section from the News-Miner article:

"Palmer wouldn’t specify whether he’s engaged in discussions with Exxon. He said TransCanada has been talking with various producers for several years and is prepared to offer equity in the pipeline to producers who commit gas during an initial open season. Likely producers with gas leases on the North Slope are BP, ConocoPhillips and Exxon Mobil."

http://www.newsminer.com/news/2009/jun/06/federal-bill-gives-edge-alaska-gas-pipeline/

Taking into context Fagan's info with Palmer deciding not to tell the News-Miner about discussions with Exxon and Palin's statements, I think the project has received some extra momentum.

wisetrog June 7, 2009 3:19 AM

AP's article on Sanford bet:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2266520/posts

Tommy, is Fagan an Exxon lackey? If Exxon is on board with this project, then I hope those Republican critics who crow on and on about "producer-based economics" will be silenced.

Huge political victory? You betcha.

paperson June 7, 2009 3:28 AM

Tommy, thanks for the detailed info. I wonder what "...prepared to offer equity in the pipeline..." means? For example, speculating, if Exxon invests some money in building the pipeline, will it get a better open season deal, or alternate tax deal, or some other way to get return on that equity investment? Or is it an incentive by TC to get good open season bids, and TC will give a small equity stake in the pipeline for those bids? Probably going way overboard here. LOL

On Dunn at Hupp Post and plagairism, etc.

Don't bother trying to post a anthing contradicting Dunn's assetions there. They will not post it. This is a new "meme" and may be deigned to having the same kind of chilling and inhibiting effect of her words and actions as frivolous "ethics" complaints. From now on, expect every sentence and phrase contruction of hers to be pored over to feed the "Sarah the Plagairizer" meme.

Dunn is apparently writing a "book" about Sarah. At this stage, I think we could write it for him, since he has already shot his bolts.

Well, I'm back home in Cincinnati from Auburn, NY.

Wow, as Bill and Ted say "Excellent!".

I got a picture with her and Todd with my "Conservatives 4 Palin - We've got your back, Guv!" T-shirt, and boy when I shook their hands it definitely drew their attention. I suspect they are aware of the site. Sarah is absolutely radiant.

Later after her second speech on the backside of the Seward House at the post-parade party, she signed autographs and shook hands. I was trying to pass items from behind up to her to sign. Then she came to me with a pen and asked me if I would like my shirt signed. I froze up deer in the headlights like a moron thinking what kind of foolish question is that, like UBETCHA x 100. She signed my right sleeve and I was like in a dreamworld.

After I snapped out of it, Sarah and Todd got in the front black SUV later and as they drove off, Todd gave me a high five out the window.

It was a great day the whole way. Great town, great weather, great people, great speeches, and Sarah did not disappoint.

Magic!

(note: Yes, I'm the guy with the C4P shirt in the flicker photo with the gray hair. But did you have to mention the gray hair? Just kidding.)

I heard that Sarah was gonna go to the Yankees game. I suppose now she will have to go to Fenway to make it up to the Red Sox fans.

Sapwolf June 7, 2009 9:22 PM
