Grassroots Webathon Day 7: Wrap-Up
Greetings, barbarians, and Happy Father's Day!
Today is the final day we'll be tallying numbers on our webathon for the Alaska Fund Trust. We'll do a final count tonight, and the banner at the top of the page will be moved down to the sidebar, as we drop out of "surge" mode and back to normal operations.
Now that we're winding things down, I wanted to share with you guys the history of how we ended up jumping into this campaign. Back in early May, I happened to read this write-up by Erika Bolstad about Congressman Don Young's legal fund. Part of the article stated that Young, even with his connections and the fact that he was taking contributions of up to $5,000 from corporations, was having difficulty in raising funds for legal expenses.
I had written about the fund when it was first created, and noted that there really had been little publicity to encourage people to donate. This caused some concern on my part, and got me thinking more and more that the fund would need publicity to gain traction. I discussed this with RAM, who has a background in fundraising, and she agreed that the low donation limit on the fund ($150) combined with the severe restrictions on who could donate, along with the lack of publicity, was probably limiting the amount of money Governor Palin could bring in. So we at C4P gradually started fleshing out plans for this campaign.
A big debate revolved around the goal we would set for our effort. The bottom line was that this was our very first foray into political grassroots fundraising, and we had absolutely no idea what our capabilities were, or how far we could reach. We're just a bunch of Average Joes and Janes here who met up in the comment sections of political blogs. We didn't know if we were even going to raise $5,000 - this essentially was going to be a trial run of our capability as much as an effort to help the Governor.
Ultimately we decided to set our goal as the amount we knew the Governor needed - $500,000. There was some trepidation about this, because we didn't want to send out some kind of "failure" vibe if we didn't reach that in our first attempt. But ultimately it comes down to the fact that this is the amount of money that needs to be raised. We would do what we could in this first attempt, and take further runs at it if needed. I think I may have used this quote before, but our attitude was that we were going to eat this entire $500k elephant one bite at a time, no matter how long it took.
I want to offer some recognition for a lot of work that took place behind the scenes - the videos that were the centerpiece of this campaign were the work of the brilliant Seth Adam Smith, and RAM did a ton of work on helping to script and storyboard them, in addition to overseeing the overall organization of the effort. Sinistar did a great job setting up the number-crunching side of the operation, as well as handling graphics and contributing a video of his own. And Hal was his usual brilliant self with the tech side of the website. Our webathon website layout was his doing.
I also want to offer my sincere thanks to all of our sister blogs who joined in this effort - it would never have gone as well without you. If I try to name everyone who participated, I'll invariably leave someone out...but you know who you are, and thank you. I do want to give a special shout-out to a couple of the bigger blog fish who gave attention to our campaign, the lovely Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs and Allahpundit and Ed Morrissey at Hot Air.
We had originally talked about kicking this off to coincide with the official release of the numbers from the Alaska Fund Trust, but we decided to go ahead and kick things off early due to the wave of publicity from Governor Palin's trip to the Lower 48. And we decided to focus our efforts on a get-out-the-media campaign - the Governor has a big base of support throughout the country, though many of them don't follow day-to-day happenings in Alaska. They don't need to be convinced to help her out financially, but they do need to be informed when she needs a hand.
We had some good breaks and some disappointments...the Associated Press and The Washington Times picked up the news of our fundraising drive early in the week, and we got some good traffic, plenty of media queries, and a donation surge. RAM was tireless in working the talk radio venues we could get access to, including Eddie Burke, John Ziegler, Dan Fagan, Tammy Bruce, and G. Gordon Liddy.
A disappointment was our failure to get Bill O'Reilly to keep his promise about publicizing the fund...we were actually hopeful about this on Tuesday, when O'Reilly's website linked to our post about this from his front page. We'll see what happens with this down the road. It may very well be that he is waiting for a Palin legal story to tie this together, as he tends to be driven by what is happening in the news cycle.
I want you all to reflect on the number in the banner above and feel good about it. There will undoubtedly be trolls coming around who will want to paint our final result as some kind of failure, but don't buy it for a second. We're a young blog, with no real media access or resources beyond you guys - our loyal readership. This is a tremendous accomplishment. I'm so proud of all of you for getting out there and making this thing happen.
Where do we go from here? Well, obviously, our goal remains to retire this debt. We will watch the official amounts released by the fund and adjust our fundraising goals accordingly. We need to continue to spread the word about this fund as opportunities arise. Ironically, it is the frivolous complainers themselves who are our best fundraising tools - whenever they make another bogus complaint, outrage ensues and Governor Palin's support solidifies. We need to make sure those folks are aware of how best they can express that support - by financially contributing to her defense.
And finally, we at C4P will continue to try to expand our reach by providing quality content, and attracting more loyal readers. We've been happy with our progress so far, as we've expanded our readership over tenfold in the last few months. The bigger we get, the more people we can reach, and the more people we can motivate to turn out support for the Governor.
Thanks again to all of you for the incredible support you showed for this effort, and the hard work that you did. I really can't find the words to tell you all how much we appreciate you.
UPDATE by RAM: Just a reminder that Karen Allen is selling t-shirts with the proceeds going to the AFT. Check it out here.

Job well done for C4P.
Mark Salter, McCain's former chief of staff said this about Sarah Palin.
"What she knows you can't teach,
what she doesn't know she can learn."
When is the last time you heard that said about a politician?
Dear VO, RAM, et Alii,
THANK YOU for this splendid, courageous effort on behalf of Our Sarah. THANK YOU for your courage and panache in aiming high, in aiming for the "whole enchilada," the $500,000. THANK YOU for not being afraid of the small-minded trolls out there: you knew they would inevitably mock our efforts if these efforts came up short of our goals.
Trolls, we will defeat you and your false "messiah." (I am a native of and lifelong resident of Berkeley, California: I have seen the Left in its full panoply of ugliness for many decades; I know what this war involves and entails; I know that this Left must be crushed and obliterated.) Trolls, we hope to bring even you, yes, even you, to see the decency and the beauty of Governor Sarah Palin, America's Sarah.
GREAT JOB, guys!!!
Brian of Berkeley
Kudos, guys, this was a noble effort that was undertaken for the right reasons and by anyone's measure was a resounding success.
The elephant will be eaten, it just may take several courses rather than an all you an eat buffet!
We will continue to do what we can behind the scenes individually, then band together when it's time to go into battle again.
Thank you so much, C4P, for your hard work and dedication. I admire the passion and drive from the contributors and commentators on this website. I'm sure Sarah is mighty proud of C4P even though she can't pubicly announce it because that would mean endorsing it not knowing what is actually written here (even though it's good stuff) and that could mean another huge ethics complaint.
The whole time I kept on thinking "loyal foot soldiers" from RAM's "Who is Sarah" post.
:)
C4P,
This effort was a huge success! Thank you for all of your hard work, effort, and aiming high! You all are incredible!
It feels great to know that we have contributed so much to help a great lady in her fight against those who have no morals and common decency. After we find out the actual results when AFT releases them next month (I think), we should do another webathon or some other fundraiser. We need for Governor Palin to know that we ordinary barbarians will always be there for her, unlike the establishment GOP who are pretty in the tank for Mittens.
Thank you C4P, for all of your hard work and dedication!
I think C4P did a great job. I am a Team Sarah member and wish they would have put the Webathon up on our front page. I'm not sure what the deal was but our site should have worked tobether with ya'll on this. We put up many blog post on it though.
We need to watch Celtic Diva she is having a webathon of her own. Something about paying to get Sarahs office e-mails out in the open. Not sure what she cooking up.
Andrea B - I too am disappointed in Team Sarah BUT I am NOT surprised one bit by their lack of support here.
I'll state it again - as I do at every opportunity: Team Sarah is all about Team Sarah. 'Sarah' is just a name, and a person, they USE to further THEIR agenda and kook ideologies.
Hello all, great job to C4P and others for all it did to retire this debt, we can be proud of what was obtained over the 7 days.
I also consider myself a "soldier for Sarah". Track Palin is off fighting a war for the USA- to give the trolls their first amendment right- we here at C4P are here fighting for Sarah, fighting against her crazy ethical attacks, and standing shoulder to shoulder with her, as she and her family will not be left to fight these battles themselves.
Thanks again C4P and all that helped out, hope to do something like this again!
Sarah 2012!
Great idea!
How about next week we have a "Retire Toki's Jersey Turnpike Toll web-a-thon!"
"Help Toki fight John Corzine, Spare some change"
EZ-Pass is for communists.
Congrats C4P and many many thanks for all of your hard work. You prove everday that there is an army of support out here for Gov. Palin all waiting for the answer to one question "Where to captain?"
All of you have done an awesome job with the webathon. I know that Gov. Palin is proud to know that she has all of this support. All of the nay sayers are now eating crow because in just one week WITHOUT the help of the MSM, we have raised over $100k. That is one great accomplishment and deserves a huge pat on the back.
It is my sincerest hope that Gov. Palin can arise tomorrow morning knowing that a nice chunk of her debt has been lifted off her shoulders.
The Little Alaskan General marches on, while her loyal foot soldiers bring up the rear, picking off trolls as we proceed to the decisive battle. Forward march!
This venture was akin to a census taker in the Nebraska sandhills 100 years ago. Lots and lots of miles to cover between each little soddie.
The person doing the census would be greeted warmly (he would have news of the neighbors!) and given as much of a meal as the family could share.
C4P is the census taker, receiving what little each homesteader could spare (share), grateful for the repast while regaling the family with current news of neighbors. Who had a new youngun, who was ill, who had passed on and which family would need help with a barn raising.
These folks were neighbors, but in a larger picture they were family.
C4P is comprised of our neighbors and have become much like our family. Family helps family.
6 days = $109,620! Look at all the folks who came for the barn raising! Might need some more work later on, but the foundation is firm, the walls are straight.
Job well done!
Happy Father's Day :)
I applaud C4P for the effort. I applaud Kristan Cheryl Cole for her efforts!
~ However - I blame the entire population of Alaska for allowing the events that have required such!
Is the entire population up there brain-dead?
Where is the massive upraising against a half dozen absolute idiots costing the state $millions?
I continue having the feeling there is more to this 'ethics' fiasco there than meets the eye. If it's as straight forward as it appears it should have gone away LONG ago.
I'm NOT suggesting the complaints have merit - THEY DO NOT!
This story is missing a page or two! What's missing is why the people of Ak are allowing this to happen.
Where is the effort to raise funds to hire investigators and lawyers to go after the ankle-biters? Let's do a 'joe-the-plumber' number on them!!!
A wonderful grassroots effort.
Rest assured, this is not the end of the story.
It has struck me over the last several years about the ascendancy of blue collar workers on TV: cooking, motorcycle building, dirtiest jobs in the world, etc. etc. One of the most watched shows ever was National Geographic's documentary on the building of a skyscraper in Los Angeles (I don't have the details).
The workers make the world go round, day in and day out. But the fat cats run financial empires on a house of cards, and then the US Gov't bails them out. Sheesh !
First there was Sarah Palin. Then there was Joe the Plumber. There are plenty more out there.
Despite what may seem to be a downward spiral we are in, one Lady from the West has apparently put a finger in the dike. She tells us, "Whoa, stop digging !"
Finally, what do people do when they find out they've been lied to? And what do they do when they then realize that they have been liked to for a very long time .
- Answer: it ain't pretty
Thank you Sarah, and thank you C4P !
I think C4P'ers should be proud of themselves. To raise that kind of money in a week as a first-time effort is amazing.
As a point of comparison, Free Republic bills itself as the largest conservative grassroots site on the internet with 350,000 members. In web traffic, it ranks 3rd among all political sites behind HuffPo and Foxnews. It is member-financed with a loyal following and conducts quarterly fund drives to raise $80,000.
The last 2 quarters it has taken 6 weeks each time to raise the money.
Major kudos to C4P.
thank you for doing a great job. I appreciate you.
New Rachel D'Oro article:
"Palin spars with critics over ethics complaints"

New article about ethics complaints from Rachel D'Oro at AP:
Palin spars with critics over ethics complaints
Mentions the webathon but no shout-out to C4P.
LOL...missed it by "that much".
...."aaaaannnnnnd loving it!!" LOL |^D
At least you allowed viewers a link to click, so don't feel too bad. LOL.
Great job, C4P, not only on the webathon but the articles that you post every day.
I think there were more donations made due to the webathon than what C4P knows about it as not everyone would take the time to send C4P an email. Or if a person did, there is a good chance they may have typed the wrong email address (I did this three times before I finally got it right when I first started posting at C4P).
It would be a nice touch if the legal defense funds could give C4P a figure for the amount of funds that were raised this past week.
Karen Allen:
While I recognize the photo of Sarah on the front of your T-Shirts for sale, I can't read what is printed on the back.
What does it say?
Job well done C4P!
Thank you for your tireless efforts and hard work on behalf of our beloved Gov! You have brought great awareness to Sarah's cause this week. We will keep on moving to climb that mountain.
That was an AMAZING amount to raise in just 6 days!
I know the Governor is so proud to have supporters like you!
Thank you C4P and all those who made it possible, it has been a great success story, and I refuse to let anyone demean it's accomplishments.
Grass Roots to the core, and Im of the belief, Sarah is humbled and thank full from the bottom of her heart.
It's what Sarah is all about, taking on the status quo, standing up to big money, and standing for the common ordinary people.
Sarah!, we are 100% full blooded barbarians trying to assist in any way we can.
God bless C4P and Sarah and Family.
New avatar, SPR? I like it.
Al B.:
The Associated Press article is interesting -- only because it is not as blatantly snarky as most of Rachel's stories have been in the past, going back to the campaign last fall. She actually brings in Governor Palin's side of the issue several times, although her quote from the so-called expert is worthless, plus she doesn't say that the complainants' modus operandi of running to the press each time before the Personnel Board has even seen or reviewed the "ethics complaint" is a violation of state law.
Overall, though, considering many of Rachel's other one-sided stories in the past, this is a slight improvement and shows some actual journalistic techniques of bringing in both sides of a controversial issue.
My question for you Ordinary Barbarians: Kim Chatman is quoted in the story criticizing the Governor for not doing right for the State and its citizens. All the Governor is thinking about, she says, is a national campaign. Blah! Blah! Blah! But there are never any specifics about where Governor Palin and/or her administration have done bad things, made terrible choices, governed ineptly, etc., etc.
Where are the specifics? Do these critics ever delineate actual wrongdoings and poor governing, or do they just talk in generalities? Help me out on this one.
TommyReport:
Yep I've gone green in support of Iranians for freedom (thanks to a link tweeted by Gov. Rick Perry!)!
That's one of my Lara Croft avatars who kicks butt just like our Cuda does! Sarah and Lara are fierce!
wilson --
I loathe Rachel so it's hard for me to say anything good. Looks like more pot-stirring to me.
Agree on your points. She also could have said that the personnel board members were not appointed by Palin but no, she had to infer that their clearing of Palin was somehow not honest.
Typical media BS.
A great effort. Congrats. Can we get the numbers for how much was raised by this webathon and how much was raised before?
Hey...I bet you guys just really missed my t-shirt advertisement today, didn't you? ;)
I had to get outta town for Father's Day and really appreciate RAM and SusanW helping me with reminders.
BettyJoBialowski - The back of the shirts say:
Hey! Hey!
Crazies for Sarah Palin
...they'll remember we were here.
They are a couple of sayings from songs I used in some videos. Let the haters call us crazies...we made a huge splash during the campaign and won't let the country forget Gov. Palin's values and our support for her.
Anyone here that wanted to get a shirt, but didn't get around to it, just let me know. I'll keep the listing up at ConservaBid.com throughout tomorrow.
Thanks to all who purchased one! And great work by all who helped promote and donate on behalf of the webathon!
Sorry, Karen. I didn't scroll down to see the enlarged photo of the front and back view. Yes, I will buy one! But I don't want to buy it through Pay Pal (I am rebelling against passwords) and when I click the the pay by personal check button, nothing happens. Please email me at Gail_Berke@yahoo.com (yep, that is a fake name)and I will send you a check if you send me your mailing address.
Got it, BettyJo...sorry that check choice didn't want to cooperate. I'll have to investigate! Thanks for letting me know. :)
