Hollis French Leads Progressive Community Organizers in Street Sweeping Exercise

KTUU reports:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Cleanup crews were hard at work clearing sidewalks of dust and debris left over from last winter near the intersection of Benson Boulevard and Spenard Road on Friday.

But they weren't working for the state -- they were volunteers, upset at how slowly they say the state is getting around to cleaning the street.

[...]

The state says a contractor is responsible for cleaning up this stretch of road.

"They've got some problem with the contractor they've selected to get the job done," Sen. Hollis French, D-Anchorage, said.

"We are concerned with how much has been accomplished and we've expressed that to the contractor and working that," Fullerton said.

But the state says the contractor still has time to get the job done.

"She has by contract until the 22nd of July," Fullerton said.

It wasn't immediately known if this project was included as part of President Obama's "shovel ready infrastructure project program." Obama tends to like projects in which people do not actually get paid. "Profit" is an evil word in the Obama administration. Hollis French must be the newest "community organizer." Obama will be looking to nationalize the street sweeping program next.

You may remember Hollis French from the 2008 campaign. He is the Alaska legislator who promised an "October Surprise" regarding the political attack on Governor Palin known as "Troopergate."

Look for this street sweeping stunt to be used as a political commercial in Hollis' campaign for governor. Why is Hollis a Democrat? He apparently sees that the government was "too slow" to clean the streets, so he took action as a private citizen to get the job done. French should start a street sweeping business and hire some folks to drive down our nation's unemployment.

At least Mike Doogan was up front about this being a "publicity stunt":

"In a way it's just a publicity stunt, but people ought to know what's going on here," said Rep. Mike Doogan, D-Anchorage.

Unfortunately for Hollis, his good friend Kim Elton was not available to participate in the "Street Sweepers for Change" program. Elton received his silver from the Obama administration for his part in "Troopergate."

UPDATE by RAM: Earlier this month the Palin administration sealed the deal in getting Exxon on board with TransCanada. It was a major victory for her administration and for the future of the natural gas pipeline to the Lower 48.

Democrats, desperate to find something to gripe about, went in search of a section of sidewalk that hasn't been swept.

Hmmm...

One intersection of sidewalk in Anchorage vs. a major victory for the largest private energy infrastructure project in the world...

Damn that Sarah Palin. Forget pipelines. Hollis will keep the streets clean!

Update by JR: Gunny French should be proud of Governor Palin's trip to visit the troops in Europe. French, a former Marine, knows the morale boost that comes from such a visit.

By "former Marine," I actually mean, "a guy who
lied about being a Marine."

UPDATE II by RAM: The "progressives" seem a little confused about why we find Gunny's actions goofy.

Here's the "Political Posturing For Dummies" explanation...

Hollis and Doogan (you remember Mike Doogan -- he's the political genius who thought it was a good idea to outrage the leftwing of his base by
"outing" their darling) decided to find a stretch of sidewalk that was dirty. The contractor has until July 22 to clean it, but Hollis decided to invite camera crews to watch 12 Democrats sweep the dirt away in order to "make a statement" that the city or the state still hasn't done it.

It was a political stunt and a lame one at that. They had to go looking for some nonsense to hit Palin with, so they found a section of dirty sidewalk.

Headline: Palin doesn't care about cleaning the sidewalk!

Isn't street maintenance a City thing? Here in California, the State isn't responsible for that. Each city is responsible for street cleaning, maintenance (filling potholes) and public safety in their neighborhoods.

Joseph Russo June 27, 2009 1:56 PM

Does Hollis French take care of you personally?

Greg June 27, 2009 2:02 PM

Hollis French must have some sort of perverted fascination with dirt.

So, while French (the fake Marine) is shoveling up dirt, Gov. Palin is visiting the troops, quiet a contrast.

Since his name has come up, it should be pointed out that Hollis French got in some trouble when he was going around claiming to be a USMC veteran. It turned out he had done a six week stint while in the ROTC at Quantico VA. ROTC is not and has never been considered either active or reserve duty. In effect, Hollis French is a liar, of course we all know that.

sandra June 27, 2009 2:06 PM

It seems like a catch 22 thing. Why is organizing a volunteer clean-up campaign a negative? If the funds were delayed there are probably many more projects for the employed workers.

I don't see how this is anything but an Alaskan situation.

What does the Obama baby picture have to do with street cleaning?

CruelaDev June 27, 2009 2:27 PM

I had to laugh at the video of this on KTUU. They were working so hard moving dirt onto the grass next to the sidewalks...one good rain and the dirt will be right back on the sidewalks.

I live in Washington also.
here the low risk inmates sweep the streets.
It's good exercise, they perform needed community service, and their friends get to see them wearing their prison attire.
If this gentlemen wants the strrets cleaned, maybe he should propose the same solution.

and BTW, most of the inmates gladly volunteer. It beats sitting inside all day wasting away. At least they get fresh air.

Ted June 27, 2009 2:41 PM

Hollis French headed Team Obama's '08 campaign in Alaska.

Now, a real investigation would entail French's connection to the Palin Troopergate Investigations etc. -- hence the Obama Campaign OFFICIALLY committed itself to digging up dirt on Palin as part of the campaign.

howIroll June 27, 2009 4:14 PM

sandra, are you for real? It's been pretty obvious that French tries to find ANYTHING he can criticize "the state" for. It's hilarious, IMO, that the best he can do is find that a sidewalk on a stretch of road wasn't cleaned to his liking. Guess he's not willing to wait until 7/22. And as others have said, he and his volunteers are shoveling dirt off the sidewalk and placing it on grass adjacent to the walkway. One good rain and the dirt's right back on the sidewalk.

In Virginia, minimum security inmates also clean roads and sidewalks and even do other road work.

PEC June 27, 2009 4:17 PM

If he claims/claim veteran status then there must be some research. Getting kicked out of bootcamp does not qualify as a Veteran. Noramally 2 things qualify somebody. Tour in COmbat Zone automatic. The other is complete your service that originally signed for (few exceptions for injured in non-combat and disabled).
Safe to say he was one of those that couldn't cut it at ROTC much less COmbat. GOV Palin spent more time in a combat zone when she went to Kuwait last year than this num has his entire career.

Too bad you'd rather be governed by assclowns like Hollis French who gin up stunts like sweeping the sidewalks instead of a real woman like Palin. She only jump started a gasline project that no one else has been able to do since Wally Hickel was governor. And unlike other governors (and the President whom you obviously voted for...) she knows how to cut a budget.

Washington state is about $10Billion in debt, thanks to my Democrat former lawyer, now Governor, Christine Gregoire. Michigan.........that is an even more interesting story. The Governor, Jennifer Granholm, is also a Democrat, and her name has been put out for Justice of the Supreme Court. If Sonja Solamayor does not get the nod, then JG's name might be put back on the list. If she can't run Michigan, then what gives us proof that she can do her job on the Supreme Court.
My point: if Sarah is perceived by some in Alaska that she is not doing her job based on her past profession or schooling, then what does make people think that being in a profession such as a Lawyer or have more education make them a better candidate?

K. Carpenter June 27, 2009 6:32 PM

Think of how many street cleaners could have been hired this year for $1.5 million dollars.

The $1.5 million dollars represents the legislatures salaries that they more than doubled this year.

Perhaps if Hollis and his fellows legislators had not doubled their salaries this year, more street cleaners could have been hired to clean the streets and they would be done by now. To boot, it would have also helped out many Alaskans who are looking for a job right now so they can keep a roof over their heads and feed their families.

But...nooooooooo, Hollis and his buddies needed that doubling of their salaries instead of helping Alaskans out when they need it most.

I had to do a double take to even understand what in the hell you were talking about. You apparently zeroed in on the fact that one of the staffers is holding a child.

The point of the photo is to show the allegiances of those in the photograph. We were providing "back story" for readers who might not know about Hollis French's connection to Troopergate.

We also do not allow Obama Birth Certificate conspiracists because the idea that an 18-year-old American girl traveled to Kenya to give birth at a time when a massive violent rebellion was taking place there is absolutely ridiculous.

The birth certificate nuts are not nearly as disgusting as the Trig Truthers. Trig Truthers attack a mother and child. The birth certificate loons merely claim that a man wasn't born where he claims he was. However, both are the product of tinfoil kooks.

Politician engages in political stunt? There is a shocker. You may have missed one earlier in the week you might also like to comment on: Some Gov went nuts about a blogger photoshopping a picture. What those politicians won't do for attention...

You welcome debate? My mother must have taught me a different set of manners. Hostility pervades the site. Even the slightest ambiguous hint of dissent creates a wildfire of suspicion. It feels like N. Korea. Folks who point out what they perceive to be a lack of consistency in your perspectives are derided. You have no interest in debate, just mutual reinforcement of your biases. Your site is far more amusing than Mudflats. Reminds me a lot of Palin's Deceptions, only they are more civil there.

R. A. Mansour June 27, 2009 11:42 PM

Oh dear, someone got their feelings hurt...

Yeah, having a spokesperson say that a creepy photoshop of your infant son is not cool -- that's a political stunt.

How dare she defend her children or insist that crude attacks on her kids are not acceptable. What the heck was she thinking? Doesn't she know her kids are fair game?

We're just like North Korea? Is North Korea the new Godwin's law...

"And you, sir, are worse than North Korea!"

I love debate.

Instead of debating you scream, "you people are mean!" and run off.

I answered you repeatedly. And you are now supposed to fire back. And then we tangle a little. And if you are a half way cool person, you and I will end the debate with "we agree to disagree" and leave it at that. And then you can come back another time and we can do the whole thing over again. We throw barbs at each other, we parry and thrust, and the best idea wins.

Debate isn't for weenies or sissies.

We play hardball here. If you want to debate with me, let's debate.

Oh yeah, one more thing...

The site name is "Conservatives for Palin" -- regular readers and commenters here tend to:

1) like Palin
2) be informed about her record

See, that means that our commenters tend to make mincemeat of foolish people who post:

1) easily debunked criticisms of Palin
2) snotty drive-by comments
3) poorly thought out arguments that a third grader could rebut

To step into this forum and think that you can get away with the same caliber of anti-Palin drivel spewed on the Daily Kos is just asking for a smackdown.

Don't like it? Learn to debate better, grow a pair, or go dine at the (Kos) kiddies' table.

Jan Kinchains June 28, 2009 1:52 AM

Some of us actually have lives. We don't sit at our computers all day waiting for an opportunity to spar with the great Mansour.

I am not sure what you think we were debating, anyway. I simply made an observation about how it seemed to me H. French was modeling ideal conservative behavior. Something Conservatives ought to like. But you are not Consrvatives - you are simply 4 Palin and so anything anyone does that might reflect poorly on Dear Leader must be diminished. So you attack. "It was a political stunt" And of course SP is the only politician who does not engage in political stunts. Does that notion not seem ridiculous to you?

You wanna debate? (You will have to be patient. You must all get feeds to your Blackberries. BTW, what is the rush? I am afraid this is just amusement for me, I won't sit here waiting, - but I will be back)

Tell me you really believe the photoshopped image is ridiculing Trig, not Sarah - and that other similar satires mock the person whose image was REMOVED and not the person whose image was INSERTED. We may not get past that. If we do, you can explain how the photo came to be iconic and sacred, for if it is not, then the Gov's spokesperson (who I think we can say speaks for the Gov) overreacted in responding to it. Why did she do that? Defending the child? From what? Is it possible it was a political stunt?

R. A. Mansour June 28, 2009 4:34 AM

Lovely, Jan.

You complain about ad hominem attacks and then engage in one.

Charming.

I already explained the photo. Do you have children? How would you feel if we photoshopped grotesque manipulations of your child's face? Would that be alright with you?

The speech that she gave that night meant a great deal to many families with special needs children. One of our contributors comes from such a family. He held his mother's hand as she cried to hear someone address what it's like to have a child with special needs. Another friend of mine whose younger sister has special needs experienced the same thing watching that speech. I can't express what it meant to these people to hear Gov. Palin speak directly to their struggles and fears and hopes. To cheapen that by doctoring the most famous photo from that night was heartless and crude.

I didn't say a peep about Diva's other photoshop of Palin and Eddie Burke. Palin and Burke are adults. They can handle it. We're not above goofing on politicians and public figures on our website.

But lay off the kids.

I don't think it was a stunt for her spokesperson to express disgust that someone would do that to the image of her child.

If you can't see how that might offend her and the families of special needs children, then I don't know what to tell you.

Now, as for Hollis and his broom sweeping excercise... whatever. The contractor had until July 22nd to finish the job. That was the contract.

So, it was nice of Gunny to get out there and clean the sidewalk and invite all the camera crews to watch him do it.

Sure, all politicians do stunts of some sort. I'm sure Palin does them too.

But the photo wasn't a stunt. It was personal.

I hope I was civil enough for you.

Gray,

You're blaming Governor Palin for the sidewalks in Anchorage? Why not the President?

Pls read more thoroughly, as I said upthread, the Road/Right of Way that was cleaned is a State Highway, and clearly it's the State's responsibility (Sarah's job) to maintain it.

Not Barack's, nice attempt to divert attention, but FAIL.

GreatGoofy,

Any thought to the fact that the erruptions this year means more dirt than usual? Makes it more difficult to clear. And just what is Hollis after in the end? Two words: union jobs. Got to get rid of that independent contractor and make it a union job again. Can't have the Palin administration taking away those lucrative union jobs. Hollis French loooves the union.

RAM

I must not know what an ad hominem attack is. Could you please show me where I made one?

"Lovely, Jan.

You complain about ad hominem attacks and then engage in one."

You never explained how the photo became sacred & iconic. It is sweet that you all feel so strongly for Trig. Lord knows the child will need lots of support. Not clear how that relates to photo shop. If I took a picture of a baboon and photoshopped your face onto it, that would insult the baboon?

Awww RAM, trying to blame the dirty sidewalks on Mt. Redoubt. Nice try, but a swing and a miss.

Not being an Alaskan, you're probably not familiar with putting gravel on the streets during the winter in order to improve tire traction. Snow plows come by some days later, and move the snow and gravel off the road and onto the sidewalks and ROW.

No one here in Anchorage has proposed that the dirt and gravel being cleaned up was due to Mount Redoubt. The only people that are claiming that are people such as yourself. People that have never experienced an Alaskan winter or spring breakup.

Oh and the ad hominem attacks like calling me 'GreatGoofey' truly underscore your thin understanding of Alaska and inability to defend your faulty ideas.
