BUMPED: Letterman Makes Another Sex "Joke" About Willow Palin; Statement from the Palins; UPDATE: Letterman Issues a Non-Apology; Call to Action!

On Monday, Letterman "joked" that 14-year-old Willow Palin was "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez during a baseball game.

Last night, he associated Willow Palin with Eliot Spitzer and prostitution:

Classy.

UPDATE by JR: Contact CBS and let them know what you think about David Letterman making cruel jokes about 14 year old children:

UPDATE by RAM: The following statements were issued by Gov. Palin and Alaska's First Gentleman about Letterman's treatment of their 14-year-old daughter:

"Any 'jokes' about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too."

- Todd Palin

"Concerning Letterman's comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he'd ever dare make such comments about anyone else's daughter): 'Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands - that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone's daughter, contribute to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.'"

- Governor Sarah Palin

UPDATE II by RAM: From Victor Davis Hanson, our favorite intellectual at NRO:

Letterman in His Dotage [Victor Davis Hanson]

Letterman attacked in crass sexual terms both Palin and her daughter: Two of the rhetorical cornerstones of the feminist movement used to be zero-tolerance for sexual slurs by men alleging promiscuity ("slutty flight-attendant look"), and jokes about something as serious as rape (e.g., Palin's 14-year-old daughter "knocked up by Alex Rodriguez"). David Letterman, who has become ever more creepy in his dotage, on both counts proved a boor — and receives only silence? (Personally, I admire flight attendants a great deal: They put up with a great deal from jet lag to obnoxious passengers, and somehow remain polite and hard-working — and with a modest and professional look.)

UPDATE III by RAM: Great stuff from Little Miss Attila. Read it. It's vintage.

UPDATE IV by RAM: I am heartened to learn that ordinary Americans on the left side of the political spectrum are also disgusted with Letterman’s “jokes” about Gov. Palin’s 14-year-old daughter.

The Dr. Socks of the “Reclusive Leftist” blog
reminds us that “Sexism isn’t selective, and misogyny isn’t something that only applies to certain women”:

Remember the Sarah Palin rape jokes? Remember the “C***” t-shirts? Remember the boiling rivers of misogyny that poured from the so-called progressive blogs? Remember the feminism-free feminists who laughed right along?

This stuff metastasizes. Behavior begets behavior. As I wrote last year —
one of many, many posts:

“The haters don’t care about Palin’s political positions. They’re driven by some inchoate impulse to crucify the woman herself. To rape her with words.”

Read the rest of her post. DaTechguy, who tipped us off to Dr. Socks’ post, notes that we might disagree with Socks on any number of issues, but she’s an honest voice.

You don’t have to be a conservative or a supporter of Gov. Palin to find Letterman’s comments cheap and cruel and offensive.

UPDATE V by RAM: Letterman has issued a non-apology apology. He’s insisting that the joke was about Bristol, even though Bristol wasn’t even in New York. The daughter who attended the baseball game was Willow.

“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]... and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight's show. "These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.... Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No." Saying he hopes he's "cleared part of this up," Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

Gee, you think she’ll go on your show after you suggested that her 14-year-old daughter was a prostitute and made a joke about that same 14-year-old getting sexually assaulted?

I have to ask, did it make any difference really which Palin daughter it was? Is sexual assault a joke?

UPDATE VI by RAM: Here is video of Letterman’s non-apology:

I’m sorry. I have seen the Palins treated heartlessly in the past, but that video is just too much. The audience is laughing about a cruel joke made about someone’s 14-year-old daughter.

This is “hope” and “change”?

You may wonder why we keep writing about this. It’s not about stirring up controversy for web traffic. We are fighting this because if we let this slide then we are saying that the Palins are fair game for everything. If their 14-year-old daughter is not off limits, then nothing is. If this heartless jerk can get away with this, then what next? Can we expect jokes about little Piper? When is enough enough?

I would be disgusted by this if it were anyone’s daughter.

Are you upset by this? Then make your voices heard. A number of you have been emailing the local CBS affiliate in Anchorage. Here is the reply they are sending out:

I want to thank you for taking the time to write regarding the recent comments about Sarah Palin and her family on The David Letterman Show. I want to let you know that KTVA does not condone this type of treatment of a minor. While our Governor may be a controversial figure, her minor daughter is not. In my opinion this crosses the line and have registered my complaint with CBS corporate management. While I understand from CBS and David Letterman that there has been some confusion regarding which daughter he was referring to, the responsibility rests with them to make this clear. As the General Manager I regret that this content regarding a minor aired on our station. We are previewing tonight's Letterman Show to see if there is a repeat instance of this content. If there is, we will not air another sexually derogatory reference about a Palin minor. I also encourage our viewers to register their sentiments on this matter. CBS maintains an Audience Services telephone number for these types of issues. That number is 1-212-975-3247. I will also be forwarding every email I receive regarding this matter to CBS.

Regards, Jerry Bever
Jerry Bever Vice President/General Manager KTVA-TV Alaska Broadcasting
Company, Inc.

Take his advice. Call CBS at 212-975-3247. Melt their phones.

Call every women’s organization you can think of. Call every sexual assault victims organization you can think of. Call every child protection advocacy group you can think of. Call every teen pregnancy organization you can think. Get a comment from all of them. Ask them if they have anything to say about David Letterman’s jokes about the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. Ask them if they think it was alright that David Letterman declared that his joke was really about Gov. Palin’s 18-year-old daughter. Does it make it alright that he was mocking an 18-year-old mother? And if they have no comment, ask them why. Ask them what makes the Palins any different from any other family.

Don’t stand for this. Do you want ordinary citizen politicians? Well, the Palins are ordinary people. They got into politics for the right reasons. They wanted to serve. And this is how they are treated. If you want more people to get into politics for the right reasons, then you had better defend this family – otherwise what other family would put themselves out there when this is how they know they will be treated.

UPDATE VI: From the Riehl World View:

In over five years I have never seen the Right side blogs get a blog burst going that was this unified, or sustained. And it isn't only about Palin-mania. There is a surprising amount of anger among both bloggers and commenters on this issue. And it's about double standards and being shouted down, as much as it is about Palin.

For too long, the Right has had to put up with being called homophobic, racist, misogynist, ignorant, or evil, ad infinitum - you name it, often for nothing more than trying to convey a legitimate political point.

Now we are watching one of our own being maliciously assaulted with nothing more than utter filth being spewed at her ... and we're supposed to just take it. Most of the mainstream media hasn't even acknowledged this is going on.

UPDATE VII by RAM: Sebastian at Hillbuzz offers excellent advice on how to make them hear our voices. Go after Letterman's advertisers. Don't stop. Keep emailing. Multiple emails. Persistence is everything.

Here is an up-to-date
list of his sponsors and their contact info.

Email! Call! Multiple times. Don't stop until he is fired or suspended.

Let it be a warning. They can't do this to her, and they can't do this to any woman. They can't do this to us.

UPDATE VIII by RAM: Take a look at what was said this morning on the Morning Joe:

[Harold Ford, Jr.] claimed that though Letterman was wrong to make sexual jokes about Sarah Palin's teenage daughter, somehow the Palins are "unique," and thus presumably an understandable target. Mika Brzezinski came down on him. A clearly uncomfortable Ford was soon seeking cover.

Are you angry yet? Imagine what the leftwing in this country would do if it were a conservative host attacking a Democrat politician's family in this way.

Don't just get mad. Get even. Email! Call! Don't stop until he is fired or suspended. We can make it happen. The left does this all the time. It's time we played the same game.

Don't stop! Keep the pressure on! Don't let them get away with this!

We can win if we keep the pressure on.

UPDATE by Mel: Per Norah O'Donnell at MSNBC, Todd Palin has released this statement (it is not yet on the official facebook page):

"Nice attempt by Letterman to draw the heat away from himself; however, Willow was the only one at the Yankees game and the only Palin child included in the photo opportunities with the Giulianis, as was obvious. Regardless of which Palin daughter it was, Bristol, Willow or Piper, these sexually-perverted comments are outside the acceptance of mainstream America."

For more information about Letterman's sponsors see here.

UPDATE II by Mel:

Tim Blair points out Letterman's bs:

So Sarah Palin went to a baseball game with her 14-year-old daughter, Letterman cracked wise about Palin’s daughter being knocked up by a baseball player during the game, but he was really talking about another daughter who … wasn’t at the game. Makes sense.

UPDATE III by Mel: From
Meg Stapleton:

"The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman."

UPDATE II by JR: John McCain defends Governor Palin:

"I don't understand why Letterman would say that about a young woman," McCain said during a telephone interview on Thursday. "They (the Palins) deserve some kind of protection from being the butt of late-night hosts."

UPDATE IV by Mel: From Senator Claire McCaskill (D - Missouri) via Twitter:

Letterman jokes about Palin's daughter. Way over the line. If it were my daughters I'd be furious. He should seriously apologize.

And from a press release from The New Agenda:

The New Agenda, a national organization dedicated to improving the lives of all women and girls regardless of political affiliation, called on David Letterman to demonstrate true contrition by devoting a segment of his show to some of the insidious ways language puts young women at risk.

And a piece from New Agenda President, Amy Siskind at the Huffington Post:

When is sexism acceptable? The answer should be never. Yet for many feminists in our country, only certain types of women have been worth defending. When a conservative woman is the target of an attack, many so-called feminists stay silent. This "selective sexism", or speaking out against sexism on a case by case basis, does not advance our national dialogue on women's issues. Rather, selective sexism allows a dangerous level of permissible sexism to live and breed in our country. The only way for the women of this country to truly move forward is to unite and speak out against all forms of sexism regardless of party or the source of the attack.

UPDATE IX by RAM: I was on the Tammy Bruce show this afternoon to discuss our call to action. Listen here.

UPDATE X by RAM: We have a new post up with the latest info. Keep contacting his sponsors. Don’t stop until he is fired or suspended. Send multiple emails. Call multiple times. Don’t stop. It works. Companies are already pulling their ads off of CBS's website. Keep the pressure on. Don't stop.

Tie this with anybody that goes on his show. HE is talking about a 14 year old and is now saying a former GOV tried to rape a 14 year old. Yes he is a pervert.

Can't Obama's FCC Charge Letterman with something??? This is public airwaves!!!

Whatever, people seem to think that anything "Palin" is a get out of irrelevance free card. Dave's obviously just grasping at straws and can't come up with anything more clever than LOL SEX WITH MINORS. Twice.

kckates June 10, 2009 9:00 AM

I continue to be amazed at the obsession the left has with Sarah. As has been said there is no bad publicity. If people are talking about Sarah she will be just fine. They think snide remarks will marginalize her, just the opposit is happening.

Why is Dave obsessed with a charming 14 year old girl...the authorities need to investigate.:~O

Yogi41 June 10, 2009 9:13 AM

Write the sponsors, seriously. This will not stop unless the public does something. Talking about how angry we are does nothing but make us feel better... we have to start taking action and writing this show's sponsors and advertisers with threats will be effective, as it hurts them in the wallet.

Anyone know how to get a list of the show's sponsors? This is where complaints need to be sent. Always best to hit them in the pocketbook. CBS doesn't care and the White House is probably loving it.

Start writing; this is a 14-year old girl that is being attacked and we have to make our voices heard that humor like this is not acceptable.

I have not watched anything on network TV for years. It was bad then and is worse now.

This guy is washed up. He knows he hit on something to up his ratings.

Todd and Sarah are showing great restraint not calling him up and telling him to leave their minor daugther out of his routine. Willow has done nothing to anyone. She is a sweet girl whose mother happens to be a conservative.

Yea, if I were Todd I would call him personally. It is bad enough to call a sitting governor horrible names, but a minor, innocent girl?

What needs to happen is for a bunch of People to take over his live audience and boo the idiot off the stage on a regular basis and publicly humiliate him.

Also a very public boycott of CBS and its advertisers needs to happen until they take action to publicly censure Letterman and get him to apologize for his remarks.

JJ June 10, 2009 9:54 AM

Well, I think he should be afraid if Sarah Palin is shooting rats out of a helicopter. After all, his rat-like teeth can possibly confuse Gov. Palin.

Seriously, to insinuate that a 14 year old girl is a prostitute is just wrong. I do not think that the Palins should call him out on it, though. It would just be additional fodder for him and the media.

Emerson C June 10, 2009 9:54 AM

It seems to me that the frenzy of assaults on Governor Palin over the past ten days are backfiring spectacularly. Even the nutroots are calling out Letterman. The so-called "plagairism" charge, subsequently reduced to "lifting" has destroyed whatever was left of Geoffrey Dunn's reputation, together with the networks that repeated it. Since there was an actual video to refute it, they are really desperate. The misquotes by Balz in the WaPo are mind boggling in their incompetence, since there is also video to show him up. As for Katleen Parker . . . well enough said. Epic fail.

There has to be some sick obsession that David Letterman has with Governor Palin and her kids. His jokes are a manifestation of a twisted, perverted mind.

Watch how Letterman sits when he interviews his guests. He positions himself so he can look down the shirts of female guests. It's quite degrading.

Yogi41 June 10, 2009 10:40 AM

Terri, I disagree. The reason people continue to think it's okay to make females the butt of their jokes is precisely because we women don't want to make waves, so we just sit back and take the hits, thinking we're being "above it all". Not anymore...

For years, it was considered okay to make blacks the butt of jokes. Guess what? Blacks organized and started fighting back. Thankfully, it is no longer considered appropriate to make jokes and vile remarks about blacks or any other minority - and that's how it should be.

So why should women sit back and take it? Nah, fighting back is exactly what every person should do, including Gov. Palin. This is her daughter, for crying out loud. Any mother would defend her daughter and Gov. Palin has every right to do so, should she choose to do it.

Meanwhile, I'm not sitting around waiting to see what Gov. Palin is going to do; I'm sick of this when it's directed at adult females and I especially become enraged when it's directed at minor girls.

section9 June 10, 2009 10:40 AM

I don't get this. What is it with this guy? He has a chance, a real chance, to kill The Tonight Show in the ratings.

Why? They've replaced Leno with an Epic Fail as a host and The Tonight Show's ratings are starting to tank.

Letterman could attack both sides of the aisle and broaden his appeal to independents, which right now have a "pox on both houses" attitude. Instead, he is following the Olbermann strategy of appealing to what the Democratic Base thinks is the correct strategy towards Sarah Palin and her family.

It's galactically stupid and shortsighted. Not only that, but I am convinced that it is also being directed by the Network people who are directing the writing team around Letterman. This is not to excuse Letterman himself, who has a habit of trying to beat up on Conservative guests.

I don't get this. It's near-suicidal. They have a real chance to dominate Late Night and pump up CBS' ad revenue because of Letterman's brand name. Instead, they go MSNBC and Epic Fail.

Yes, for a while Dave will get press from a "feud" with the Palins, but only if Sarah is foolish enough to take the bait. She won't be. She'll hold her tongue and let Dave's words stand out there all by their unfair and uncalled for lonesome.

The question I have is how many of Sarah's easily offended "friends" in the Beltway G.O.P. will take umbrage at these "jokes" made at the expense of a 14 year old girl?

(....sound of crickets....)

I thought so.

ancestory.com is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I hope it is not true that the Mormans are sponsoring our dear friend and distinguished comedian, Mr. Letterman.

bestbud June 10, 2009 10:47 AM

Sarah was so classy when answering Ziegler's question about Letterman, she didn't belittle Letterman with rage and nasty comments but got her point across by the inflection of her voice and dismissing him with something to the effect, 'thats just ole Dave'.

Let's boycott sponsors, write all involved with CBS, but please don't stoop to his level of disgusting rhetoric, as this would not reflect well on us as her supporters.

Sorry to preach a bit, Im outraged, mad as hell and beside myself with anger as to 'will this ever end'.

Sarah admitted to Ziegler, that it gets her down at times but presses on with class and dignity....

Right to Life in Indiana, Michael Reagan, New York etc., continue to show her undying popularity and support for what she represents.... she said her batteries were recharged in Indiana, that coupled with C4P and SarahPac etc., will certainly lift her up and sustain us all for what amounts to the battle for 21 Century American renewal.

Mountain Mama June 10, 2009 10:51 AM

First off, Sarah is a good shot. She wasn't shooting rats in NYC.
Dave's still alive.

Second, Dave was commenting on Spitzer's problem with lust. He didn't come anywhere NEAR suggesting that Willow is a prostitute.

However, yes----Letterman was indeed using Willow and Sarah to get a few cheap laughs. He's such a loser who is under the gun, now that he's up against Conan O'Brian, who has a younger viewing audience.

So yep, Letterman should be forced to quit joking about beautiful female children, especially since we KNOW he has a political agenda these past two evenings: helping to take down Sarah before she can run again and potentially knock BO out of office. (Let us pray....)

If Letterman had made similar jokes about Obama's girls, he'd be fired and jailed forthwith.

So thanks for the encouragements to call, write, blog, and otherwise advocate for calling this jerk off the Palin family! Great job pulling together contact information!!!!!!

Letterman is a vile and disgusting sleaze-bag.
The best revenge will be that great day when the likes of Letterman and Couric have to say "President" Palin. Can you just imagine Katie having to say that on the CBS nightly news? But hopefully both those low-lifes will be long gone by then.

Yes, organize boycotts. But boycotts of viewers. When the ratings plummet, change will come.

jimr3 June 10, 2009 11:15 AM

Done!

Here is what I sent them.

REF: David Letterman’s nasty joke involving Governor Palin’s child

Willow Palin is fourteen years old. Let me say that again, she is only fourteen years old.
She is a child. And as such, she is entitled to her dignity and to her privacy. Willow is not a politician, and she is not a spokesperson for any cause, she is simply a child of a mother who just happens to be a governor of a state. The mere fact that her mother takes her along on trips is of no consequence.

Using a shy quiet young fourteen-year-old girl in a sex joke is not only just creepy but I would consider it to be almost criminal.

Please ask yourselves this question. Would you appreciate David Letterman dragging your underage daughter into a sex joke on national television? Any self-respecting loving parent would not.

Remedy:

David Letterman and the management of CBS must make a televised apology to Willow Plain. Apologies should also be extended to her mother and father and to the viewing public. Apologies should also be made in writing. Furthermore, the management of CBS should state unequivocally that in the future, using the children of any politician in a sex joke would never again be tolerated or condoned. Even though I didn’t vote for President Obama, I wouldn’t expect anything less for his two beautiful children, and nor should Willow Palin and her parents.

Simply put, children are off limits.

Please note; I will be forwarding this email to the sponsors of CBS.

Gelston,

Your statement got me wondering though. I did a little research and found that just last year there were some questions about the ownership of ancestry.com
and found this quote from Tim Sullivan, CEO of The Generations Network (the parent company of ancestry.com)

"We [The Generations Network] have absolutely no ownership affiliation with the LDS Church. We have a very diverse management team. We are owned primarily by a private equity investment group in the bay area called Spectrum Equity Investors and they, sort of partnering with the management team about a year ago, did a buy-out of the company."

That certainly brings up a point that probably a lot of the sponsors of these television shows have larger parent companies that should also be pressured.

Todd and Sarah both responded more harshly to that douchebag:

"Any 'jokes' about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too."

- Todd Palin

"Concerning Letterman's comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he'd ever dare make such comments about anyone else's daughter): 'Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl are not only disgusting, but they remind us Hollywood has a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands - that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone's daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.'"

- Governor Sarah Palin

Great statement by Todd and Sarah.

Letterman makes 40+ million a year. He thinks he's untouchable. His unconscionable slurs will not stop until he fears danger to himself and to those he holds dear. He wants to hurt Palin and hurt her daughter. He enjoys being cruel. He wants to shame them and laugh about hurting them. He doesn't fear you. He thinks he's better than you. He will laugh at the complaints that are filed over this. He's a despicable person. It's unforgivable. He will reap then sow.

Letterman, is a smug arrogant despicable low life troll, using television as his weapon.

wisetrog June 10, 2009 11:58 AM

They should demand Letterman be taken off the air. Hillary people were successful in taking out David Schuster, if I remember correctly for saying Hillary pimped Chelsea.

Now, if the GOP had any sense they would pile up pressure on CBS. Where is Michael Steele? He should condemn Letterman too.

wisetrog June 10, 2009 12:01 PM

Okay, we all know I love Sarah, but I just have to say I ESPECIALLY loved Todd's response in this case. There's just something about a dad standing up for his daughter. But good job, both of them!

Demand the face of CBS Katie Couric comment on this. Does she approve of joking about the rape of a 14 year old?

Mountain Mama June 10, 2009 12:05 PM

From the viewpoint of my "field" (ministry), this is part of an immense, eons-old spiritual battle.

*Seriously, no offense meant to the a/non-religious posters, here.*

I will NOT allow myself to become enraged about this, because rage and fear FEED The Evil One----which is similar, but on a lower level, to what someone posted earlier: that Letterman loves to bug people like this.

Instead of getting angry, just stay calm and do the right thing (kudos there to Dr. Laura):
Call, write, post, and advocate against Letterman's using the Palin girls as easy targets.

He IS a jerk, and it's ALL part of a larger Dem plan to ruin Sarah----but it's also only part of a larger plan to hurt people everywhere.

End of my two cents. Off to prayer group, where we will tackle this issue, believe me.

(OH, and KUDOS A-PLENTY to the Palins for their neat responses!)

PEC June 10, 2009 12:08 PM

This response is admirable restraint from the First Dude and Mama Grizzly both. At first the Gov was probably admonishing Todd and the kids:

"Honey stop grinding your teeth and stop sharpening your ulu! I can't hear the General. No, you can't gut Loserman on national TV! No not even FOX! Now calm down.
Take Willow to target practice. Willow honey, good cast but stop throwing your father's harpoons at that pervert's photo. You'll wake up Trig.

What's that Piper? Letterman Lemonade for your stand? It smells....funny.....Piper, tell me you didn't pour THAT in! What will the dogs drink, dear?

JohnDoeAt30Below June 10, 2009 12:36 PM

Letterman is just bitter because the new contract he signed calls for him to tak a pay cut:

NYT: Executives who have been involved in the negotiations said Tuesday that Mr. Letterman’s company, Worldwide Pants, and CBS have agreed on the details of the contract, including, for the first time, a reduced license fee for the 11:35 p.m. program, “Late Show with David Letterman,” and now are waiting for a “deal memo” that will lay out the terms in formal language.

The news of the new deal for Mr. Letterman was first reported in The Hollywood Reporter.

The most significant parts of the new deal, according to one senior executive involved in the negotiation, were the concession by Worldwide Pants that CBS will pay less for the show over the next two years, and the absence of any specific stipulation that this will definitely be Mr. Letterman’s last run in late night. The star is now 62 years old.

But Mr. Letterman and CBS did limit the new deal to just two more years (his current contract runs until August 2010). His previous agreements were generally three years apiece. And in his last published interview, Mr. Letterman said he was not sure how much longer he wanted to continue hosting “Late Show.”

The reduced fee does not necessarily mean that Mr. Letterman himself will take a reduced salary — his current take has been estimated at about $32 million a year. The deal with CBS is for a fee for the show, which Worldwide Pants owns. The company, which is led by Mr. Letterman, decides how to allocate the money it receives from CBS.

Because of the national economic downturn, CBS has been looking to reduce license fees for all of its programs. The Letterman side found CBS’s request for a lower fee reasonable, the senior executive said.

Not a defense of Letterman by any stretch of the imagination.

But I know he tapes multiple shows on the same days. Did he tape Mondays and Tuesday nights shows on Monday for broadcast? Hence the variation of the same joke? (It doesn’t explain the other lame jokes every other night, however)

What days does he tape for what nights?

section9 June 10, 2009 1:06 PM

You know, I called for restraint on the part of the Governor about this, because I knew that this was an attempt on the part of Letterman, Worldwide Pants, and CBS to garner ratings.

But the Governor's, and especially Todd's single, quietly enraged sentance, show a superb sense of quiet, dignified parental outrage without going overboard.

Very, very well done on the part of Palin and Meg Stapleton.

BTW, there is no honor among thieves. Watch if NBC and the PDS crowd over at MSNBC don't change their tune and start piling on Dave. Why? Conan is a weak sister replacement for Leno. Everyone knows it. Hitler would get better ratings than Conan. So this could be a chance for NBC Universal to put a stake through CBS' late night lineup and possibly kill off Dave if this thing starts getting legs and the sponsors get spooked.

Don't expect MSNBC's defense of Dave to last long. Millions of dollars of ad revenue are at stake, and CBS is still the competition.

President Obama referred to the Muslim bible as the Holy Koran. The founder of Islam took Aisha as his wife when she was 6, though he did not consummate the marriage until she was 9.

Nancy June 10, 2009 1:34 PM

This joint statement reminds me of my parents.

My dad writes a snail mail letter every week to our family, and we call it, giving us the "headlines". It's very short, with just the basics. "We went here", "this is what so and so is doing", "pray for this family member." Short and sweet.

Then, sometime during the week, my mom will send an e-mail with what we call "the juice". She will tell us where they went, what they were wearing when they went there, what they ate while there, what someone else had to eat, and how she felt about what happened, who, why, what we should pray for. It's sometimes long and we love it, because she paints the picture for us.

That's exactly how the Palins made their statement. They both said exactly what they meant, and meant exactly what they said, in their own ways.

techno June 10, 2009 1:36 PM

Do you still believe that Obama still deserves a chance, that you have no right to judge his policies and decisions, and that you must still acquiesce to the will of the Messiah because he is Caesar?

Lipstick,
LOL! Thanks for that!

Ashley June 10, 2009 2:47 PM

How does this sound?

I am completely disgusted by the comments made by David Letterman about Sarah Palin and her 14 year-old daughter. As a 20 year old female, I found the “jokes” not only crude, but derogatory and sexist. It is absolutely vile that a grown man would make such “jokes” about a 14 year-old child, let alone referring to a respectable sitting Governor as having the appearance of a slut. Letterman and CBS owe the Palin family an apology, NOW.

Should I add anything?

ErichNTejas June 10, 2009 2:48 PM

I'll be interested to read Camille Paglia's take on all this. My hunch is it will be well worth reading.

ErichNTejas June 10, 2009 2:49 PM

Ashley...think that covers it...nice job.

juju June 10, 2009 2:55 PM

I am wondering why no one has said anything about A-Rod and/or the Yankees not making any comment. While this is such an insult to Sarah and her daughter it is also an insult to A-Rod to imply that he would rape a 14 year old.

Phil June 10, 2009 2:55 PM

Just sent this letter to Dorothy Dowling, the Senior Vice President for Marketing at Best Western:

Ms Dowling,

You may have heard the 'joke' that David Letterman made about Sarah Palin's 14 year old daughter Willow in his monologue a few days ago. Sarah Palin is fair game, but 14 year olds are not. Joking that she got knocked up by Alex Rodriguez at a Yankees game, or comparing her to a prostitute that visited with Eliot Spitzer is beyond indecent - it is vulgar and reprehensible.

I've been a frequent guest at Best Western hotels in Europe and the US, and until David Letterman apologizes or Best Western stops advertising with them, I will no longer stay with Best Western. I also notice that Best Western has partnered with Worldvision which works hard to protect the dignity and rights of children worldwide. It seems somewhat strange that Best Western would support Worldvision while at the same time advertising on a show that jokes about the make believe raping of a 14 year old girl.

Please understand that I am not faulting Best Western for what has transpired. But I do feel that Best Western has a duty to distance itself from this incident.

Sincerely,

Her email address is dorothy.dowling@bestwestern.com

jfrancis June 10, 2009 2:57 PM

Isn't this more of an Alex Rodriguez joke?

You guys are obviously fishing for something to get pi**ed off about. Get over it.

GL June 10, 2009 3:05 PM

You also need to contact World Vision International as they are a sponsor of Letterman's filth. They are an advertiser on Best Western's web site.

Ashley June 10, 2009 3:10 PM

jfrancis,

NO, it is more than that. This is like the straw that broke the camels back. I am so sick and so tired of these assholes getting away with this shit. It was just as much a joke about Willow (a 14 year old CHILD, I might add) as it was about A-Rod. How? Because he was playing off the meme of Bristol getting (as he refers to it "knocked up") and saying that Willow would do the same. Besides, you DO NOT make sexual jokes about a child. That's disgusting. Letterman's disgusting and an asshole. Seriously, put yourself in Willow's shoes - it would be very embarrassing. And then put yourself in her parents shoes, and you would also be pissed.

We are not "fishing" for anything we have more than enough to get pissed off about and like I said before this IS the straw that broke the camels back. It has gone on far too long for my taste. Letterman owes the Palin's an apology.

Now let me ask YOU a question? Would you be saying the same thing if he were making a reference like that to the Obama girls?

Lipstick June 10, 2009 3:10 PM

jfrancis:

I wish you had let me know ahead of time about your comment, I need to get some popcorn because this is going to be good when these people start commenting on your comment.

Ashley - The apology should come from CBS and Lettermen should be fired immediately. WHere is Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson?

lonestar June 10, 2009 3:11 PM

Imus was fired because left leaders and voices would not let up. Where are right leaning leaders and advocacy groups? The silence is telling.
Last night, Hannity had G Allred on his panel, she didn't say a word against the vile comments about the Palins. They only care if the person is liberal or has a D next to their name.
I am ashamed that I used to be a democrat.

Yogi41 June 10, 2009 3:11 PM

jfrancis,

Nope, we're through "getting over it".

Just like you libs cry foul over every perceived slight of insult, we are going to hit back at you just as hard. Letterman will not know what hit him... and every other liberal that thinks it's okay to make fun of women, children, Christians and conservatives will soon discover that they can only push us so far.

This is a new era of "change" and we're embracing it. Ridicule from the left will be slapped back right in your faces - you may just have to "get over it".

PEC June 10, 2009 3:15 PM

Jfrancis - My wife was sexually assaulted as a minor. You may think it is funny as I guess the heads of CBS, David Lettermen, The President and Katie Couric but I can tell you it leaves a mental scar on a young person and it is nothing to joke about.
I do agree I think the NY Yankees need to come out with a statement of whether they condemn or condone the rape of a minor by one of their players being a joke.

Ashley June 10, 2009 3:16 PM

Let's write to O'Reilly and tell him to have that Women's Media Center group on his show now. And he can hit them with this. Since they flipped shit when he talked about Helen Thomas' appearance. Would be interesting.

Letterman says he's a humorist, but nothing is funny about a 14 yard old getting RAPED, nor is it funny to imply that a Governor, or any woman is "slutty". I've never liked Letterman, he's always rubbed me the wrong way...I didn't know why, but I think I just found it. What a pig. He's probably proud of himself to. Well, news for Dave; When Palin was in Albany, she drew HUGE crowds, everywhere she went...SUPPORTERS, Supporters who probably, before he started taking shots at Palin, WATCHED him. Well, now he's lost viewers, and by god...I hope people start opening their eyes and ears, and start to realize what TRASH they've been subjecting themselves to.

Dave Letterman stepped over the line when he made those horrific comments about Willow.

Ya know, I would be just as pissed if anyone made a rape joke about Sasha or Malia Obama. Even though I am against their father and mother, they are still two beautiful children who I would also defend if someone were to say horrible things about them. To think that it is actually funny to suggest that a 14 year old child get raped is unbelievable. Just goes to show that even in the 21st century, women can be raped and some disgusting vultures in our population will think it is hilarious. Don Imus got fired for calling the Rudgers Basketball Team "Nappy Headed Hoes" there was major outrage for that statement..well, I don't see the left demanding Letterman apologize for saying that a 14 year old should be raped.
And another thing, what is up with the left and loving rape. This is the second time a leftist has demanded either Sarah or a member of her family be raped. Remember when Sandra Bernhard said that if Sarah ever comes to New York she would get her "black buddies" to gang rape her..Bottom line, Ann Coulter was RIGHT..liberalism is a mental illness

You know how you know one is a Fascist: if one blames Sarah Palin political activities or personal attributes for Letterman's remark or claims Sarah Palin or her daughter brought this on themselves and deserved to be slandered in this manner.

Nancy June 10, 2009 4:29 PM

We are fighting back so strongly on this, because this is exactly how they marginalized Governor Palin from the first day.

They want to make her a Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Blago type. It goes a huge step farther than that, with the c**t t-shirts and rape jokes, and now making jokes like that about her daughter.

Governor Palin is not an object, she is not seeking fame or seeking fame just to be famous, like most famous people these days, she is not corrupt, she is not stupid, she is not perverted.

Governor Palin is all about being a servant to others, to bring recognition to our military, to fight for the most defenseless among us, to bring awareness to causes close to her heart.

Governor Palin went to the East Coast to DO GOOD for organizations that never get attention. Guess what, because of this dear lady, millions of people are aware of these organizations now and because Governor Palin is all about bringing attention to others and not herself, they will benefit from her lending her time to their events.

What does she get in return? People inviting her to their dinner, disinviting her to their dinner, inviting her to speak, disinviting her to speak, saying she wasn't the center of attention at the dinner, saying she was the center of attention at the dinner, saying she couldn't give a speech with substance, being accused of plagarizing, no one on our "side" defending her, making fun of how she dresses, talking about her 14 year old daughter in disgusting ways.

The only reason Governor Palin didn't fight back against all this slime during the campaign, was because the morons running the campgaign shielded her from it and she was so busy giving her blood, sweat and tears, so America would hear her message and not have to go through what America is going through right now with the Obama administration! It changed November 5, 2008, because, Governor Palin WILL NOT let these things go uncontested, neither will we!

Governor Palin has made statements on President Obama and the Special Olympics "joke", the Carrie Prejean feeding frenzy, the Dr. Tiller murder, and the William Long murder. These are the situations she will not sit down and shut up about. I say, THANK YOU GOD FOR THIS WOMAN!

Governor Palin is so much better than what alot of this country deserves right now!

I'm kinda worked up!:)

This dirt bag is a walking example of how intellectually and morally bankrupt the liberal philosophy is. When the attacks on Sarah Palin began immediately after her selection as VP candidate, I concluded early on that the liberals were so afraid of her and what she represents that they felt compelled to stop her at any cost.

I wrote that Sarah Palin was the first candidate to emerge since Ronald Reagan who was a major threat to expose liberalism for the intellectual and morally bankrupt ideology that it really is.

David Letterman's sick obsession with Sarah Palin is a prime example of how the liberal philosophy is being exposed as the hateful, mysoginist dogma that it really is.

David Letterman and others like him, such as Keith Olbermann, Shannyn Moore, AkMuckraker, etc. have all made spectacles of themselves in trying to oppose Sarah Palin. This is exactly what I meant by Sarah's ability to expose the ideology.

If she likes it so be it. Why put the First Lady In the headline and make remarks about her dress. It serves no purpose.

To me it is the same about Sarah's shoes and toe nails. JUST DON'T DO IT.

But I bet Francis (lib comments in above posts) commented on Huffington Post about Sarah's toenails and shoes. Bet, she has never stood up against this type of thing. Until we all condemn it for either Libs or Cons. it will continue.

Justin June 10, 2009 4:40 PM

I'm reading these updates, and I'm finding myself applauding the leftist blogger DEFENDING Sarah Palin. Obviously she isn't JUST defending Mrs. Palin, she's defending MORAL CODE. No one should say derogatory things about ANYONE'S family, or imply that someone is "slutty". ESEPECIALLY a public figure!. Dave makes his living from making people laugh, but apparently he doesn't care about setting the example for the people who watch him.

Now some might say, "He isn't in the business of "setting the example"... I beg to differ. People look up to Dave, for god knows why, but they do. Now, he does something like this? What are those people to do? Turn a blind eye? Let him get away with it?

NO. And CBS; you want this garbage on your network? I don’t think so!

Dave crossed the line when he brought the Palin family, HER DAUGHTERS into the game. People have taken shots at Sarah, and she's stood above it all. But taking shots at her family, her CHILDREN? There's NO justifying that.

Patrick S. Adams June 10, 2009 4:43 PM

My remarks to CBS via the link provided:

I'm going to put it as straightforward as I can. David Letterman is a sick perverted man who has some type of unhealthy obsession with the Palins. It is way beyond the line of political or comedic commentary to refer to children in such a sexually repugnant way. Whatever his twisted fantasies may be of Governor Palin, involving her children is even worse.

Americans are tired of the smear campaign, the negativity and the hate that is being spewed by some on the left in this country. It's time to make Mr. Letterman an example of how morally and intellectually bankrupt the politics of personal destruction are.

Please consider these points when determining what course of action your company should take toward making it known that a network of your size and influence will not tolerate untruthful hateful or sexually repugnant remarks about a politician or their children.

As for me, I find Mr. Letterman's remarks an outrage.

Christian Schulze June 10, 2009 4:43 PM

Where are the Big Boy's of the GOP today. Why are none of them speaking up in defence of their former VP candidate. I am a 29 year Republican, but I am done with the feckless, gutless bunch that currently makes up the GOP. I am "Sarah Palin" conservative! Any Republican who fails to speak out on Sarah's behalf fails to have my support. I am done with them! This party is sick and weak and in major denial. I am encouraged by a new generation of young conservatives, but this current bunch is dead to me.

"First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me."

If we don't stand up for this utter, sexist nonsense now, who will stand up for us?

Team Sarah sent out an excellent letter for what to say and how to reach CBS.
A message to all members of Team Sarah

Dear Friends,

David Letterman’s latest Top 10 List and late night monologue directed at Governor Palin and her family is absolutely shameful, to say the least. Not only did Letterman’s list include a vulgar sexual reference to the Governor, but his monologue on June 8 went so far as to try to “joke” about 14-year-old Willow Palin being “knocked up” by Alex Rodriquez at a Yankee game.

Granted, much is fair game when it comes to public figures and late night comedy. Children, however, are never “fair game” and should never be the subject of such indecent sexual “jokes”. This attempt at comedy, using the suggestion of statutory rape as a punch line, goes beyond a breach of basic decency. Indeed commentary of this nature reflects a much darker, more disturbing trend that has permeated our supposed “entertainment” viewing.

David Letterman is entitled to his political views just like everyone else, but he is certainly NOT entitled to make explicit and vulgar sexual references toward women and children. We are appalled at such contemptible commentary.

Team Sarah is calling on members to express their views to CBS regarding this serious matter.

Bill in Baltimore June 10, 2009 5:56 PM

KentonAK,

what are you talking about ?

If I am not mistaken, this is what C4P is about, from their site:
"We are not a "Draft Sarah Palin" website. We are "Conservatives for Palin" because we support her vision of an energy independent America that is more peaceful and more prosperous because we rely on our own resources. We support her respect for life. We support her belief in limited government and true free market capitalism -- not the crony capitalism that once festered in Alaska or the corporatism that is currently taking hold in this country. We support her belief that America must be strong in order to be peaceful. We do not all agree with her on every issue. We often disagree with each other on specific issues. But we support the overall conservative philosophy that Sarah Palin affirms. Above all we respect her courage and integrity as a true reformer.

It is irrelevant to us whether Sarah Palin runs for governor again, runs for president, or runs for any other elected office. If she were to say, "I've had enough. I'm going to retire and ride snowmachines in the winter and fish in the summer," we would still support her."

How is what I said incongruent with that ?

Please advise.

The ones with addresses and phone numbers are too long to post here, but here's the list that doesn't have addresses or phone numbers attached to them:

Aveeno (owned by Johnson & Johnson)

Canon

Charmin (owned by Proctor & Gamble)

Citibank

Downy (also owned by P&G)

Lexus (owned by Toyota)

Nissan

But just use their link, as they do contain a link to each company's contact page.

complaining that the network endorses him and has not stopped him or appologized. &
requesting letterman's resignation.
