New Game: Name That "GOP Senator"

Last night The Hill newspaper released an article with the title, "Palin beginning to irritate some Senate GOPers." Of course, all of the irritated "Senate GOPers" decided to hide behind a veil of anonymity when offering their criticism. During the campaign, there was a famous "Republican senator" who had no problem criticizing Governor Palin from behind the shadows. It was eventually agreed upon that it was Senator Mel Martinez from Florida doing the bashing. Last night's Hill article features three new "Republican senators" who have problems with Governor Palin. One, I believe, is pretty easy to figure out, the other two are a bit more tricky.

So, here is "Republican senator" number one:

“She has to hunker down and govern and show she’s not a joke,” said a GOP lawmaker who represents one of the southern battlegrounds of the 2012 election.

[...]

“[Democrats and the media] did a number on her,” said the lawmaker from the southern battleground. “She has some hurdles, especially among independents and Democrats.

“She lost support among the independents and moderate Republicans, and a lot of them give money,” the lawmaker added.

Too easy: Lindsey Graham.

South Carolina is the southern battleground and he loves those moderates, Independents and Democrats. He is also still upset that Palin was chosen as the vice presidential nominee over Joe Lieberman. This GOP senator could very well be Mel Martinez again, after all -- he does have the track record. (H/T Tommyreport)

Republican senator number two:

Another GOP senator, who endorsed Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) early in the 2008 primary, argues Palin would face a lot of difficulty raising money. He said she had little appeal among the major fundraisers who made up McCain’s financial base.

“I don’t see her being a candidate in 2012,” said the lawmaker. “I don’t think she has the financial base to run. I don’t think she can convert the McCain fundraisers to her camp.

“You need to be able to raise $500 million or you’re not even in the game. That tends to thin out the field fairly quickly. It’s tough coming from a [small] state like Alaska.”

My take on this Republican senator is: "too close to call." There are just so many Palin critics that I can't keep them straight anymore. Where were McCain's fundraisers when he was picking up his own luggage in airports during the primaries? If I recall correctly, it was Governor Palin's arrival as the vice presidential candidate that brought in millions of dollars in one day. Do we really want McCain's fundraisers?

Republican senator number three:

One GOP senator questioned whether Palin has enough gravitas for voters to trust her in tough economic times.

“If the economy implodes, I don’t see her as having much of a chance,” said the lawmaker, who noted that Palin’s national political ambitions have caused her political troubles at home. “She has also taken on water up there in Alaska.”

I don't recall Palin ever setting out any national political ambitions. But it is clear that this senator has some. Governor Palin has never stated that she will run for any national office, yet this GOP senator already feels the need to try and bring her down. She has more courage and gravitas than you, senator. I think that is clear based on your sniping from the shadows.

Palin had at least one supporter in the article:

A senior GOP lawmaker said that while Palin may not be taken seriously by some Washington elites, she remains wildly popular among blue-collar conservative voters.

“Her supporters relish the idea that she doesn’t have a lot of money; she could raise it in small amounts over the Internet like Barack Obama,” said the lawmaker. “She’s about the only person in our party who can draw a crowd.

“She appeals not just to social conservatives but also to a lot of blue-collar, working-class Republicans in my state,” he added.

“People in the Northeast who read The New York Times and went to elite colleges dismiss her, but a lot of people in the country like candidates who don’t like Washington and don’t speak with an affected accent.”

This one, in my opinion, could be one of two people: Jim DeMint or Tom Coburn.

Overall, I like the idea that Governor Palin irritates most of the Beltway Republicans. What have they offered to Republicans? What have they done? Nothing, nada, zilch. Governor Palin represents something that most Senate GOPers will never represent. She represents the grassroots. The people who work hard every day and just want to see a better country in the future. They don't care about your Beltway games. They don't see you as potential leaders. They see her as a leader.

Just think about it, Mr. Graham, you are a United States Senator, you sit on important committees and discuss judicial philosophy at Supreme Court nomination hearings. You are very important in your little D.C. world, but you mean nothing to the millions of Republicans outside of "the District." When you speak, nobody listens... nobody cares. We listen to people like Sarah Palin. Sure, she doesn't have the big time donors behind her, nor the Beltway establishment. But you know what? She has people like us, and that is something you will never have. So why don't you put your important name behind your criticisms next time? It would be beneficial for us because we will take what you say and do the exact opposite.

I also like the idea that Palin is not taken seriously by Washington elites but is a favorite of blue collar workers. It reminds me of somebody.

What is going on here is very clear. Governor Palin had an awesome weekend. She gave speeches throughout New York state where she attracted thousands of people (no Washington elites, I imagine). She attended a fundraiser that collected $400,000 for a good cause. Last night, as evidenced by the CNN live stream of the NRSC/NRCC, she was the absolute center of attention.

So guys, try to keep your jealousy to a minimum and go on doing whatever it is you do in your little minority in the United States Senate. Try working on getting Arlen Specter back, he appeals to Democrats!

Oh, and here is a reminder of how well these "Republican Senators" do their job (see that little dot in the far right corner, that is you, Lindsey Graham):

Nameless Palin Assassins. They are Faceless Ninjas who serve no master but their own greed.

The Thurston Howell III, Country club Republicans fear Sarah because they know once she is elected President, that their free lunch is over.

Palin is here to stay. They better get used to it.

kckates June 9, 2009 11:44 AM

I love it the joke in the GOP...er jokes..is/are the Senators with theirinability to stand on principle. Pittyful

TommyReport June 9, 2009 11:45 AM

Russo,

Why are we assuming that it wasn't Martinez again with the first quote?

Leslie June 9, 2009 11:45 AM

Cowards. The fact that Palin "irritates" the Beltway GOP is one of the many reasons I like her.

katiejane June 9, 2009 11:54 AM

The nastier the GOP anonymous sources get the more I wish she'd just tell them to take a hike when they want to use her.
Do fundraising for those politicians who respect her - why help the SOBs thatthink she's a twit?
It is demeaning not only to her but to her supporters for the GOP establishment to think they deserve our financial support while they just want us to STFU.

Carmelo Junior June 9, 2009 11:59 AM

History repeats itself! How many GOP senators were against Reagan and in favor of Ford in 1975?
How many GOP pundits were asking Reagan to put down his ultra aggressive stance on Russia?? How many Republicans thought Reagan was a lightweight with no chances to win the nomination or defeat carter or Kennedy??

I was a kid then, but hell I can read some papers.

Sarah will be the GOP nominee like it or not. And when she starts winning primaries left and right all those "republicans" will be trying to kiss her XXX!

r.mcdonald June 9, 2009 12:01 PM

Governor Palin; please keep standing up for what is right, you will be spoken ill of simply, because of that fact. They are afraid of you because of that fact.Keep speaking the truth reguardless of who's feathers you ruffle. The proof that they know you are right is the vitriol you bring forth in them. my hat is off to you maybe you can bring back truth and justice to America.

gardunne63 June 9, 2009 12:01 PM

Lindsay Graham - not that there's anything wrong with that.

I pray Sarah goes nuclear-like rogue in 2012. Tears down the Republican Party, limb by limb, cocktail by cocktail. Shuts it down for years to follow. She runs as an Independent in 2012 and they are toast.

wisetrog June 9, 2009 12:03 PM

Why do they have to hide?

OK, since the feminists will never do it for us, I suggest that the grassroots form a advocacy group which tries to stamp down sexism raised against Sarah Palin. It purpose will be more specific than here at C4P. Call it a Women Against Sexism in Politics or something like that. Get in touch with a few activists and prominent women who are supportive of SP(Laura, Tammy etc) and aggressively strike back against these kind of attacks. Since the GOP will fold more easily, if anonymous senators trash Sarah, the group should immediately pressure the paper to reveal who these were or raise hell when David Letterman does his usual stuff.

Can all this happen, I don't know but until we do it, this will continue to get uglier n uglier. Think of all the infrastructure of women's organizations and yet they couldn't save Hillary. of course, Sarah will be treated 10,000 times worse if she gets in but we should start somewhere and even if its moderately successful with the GOP outlets at least, that's something.

First step, draft a letter about the project and circulate it with both conservative activists and feminists who would be sympathetic to SP like New Agenda and others. We need to get people who are well-connected on the board and let them shake a few things up. What do you say?

gardunne63 June 9, 2009 12:03 PM

Oh yeah, check out the latest Drudge Report headliner article.

She's already got Matt Drudge in her corner. That's worth a lot of millions in fundraising, IMO.

Nancy June 9, 2009 12:07 PM

I say it's the Senator that had the "kick me" sign taped to his back last night.

It was believed to have been put there by Fred Malek.

alwaysfiredup June 9, 2009 12:09 PM

Hey, don't blame "feminists"; my feminism is the main reason I like Sarah Palin even tho I'm (was?) a Dem. Camille Paglia defended her from the start. NOW shot itself in the foot by endorsing Obama over a ticket that included women, when they usually don't make endorsements. Shoulda kept their mouths shut.

But yes, we need to start coming down hard on the sexist way the Governor is treated, no argument there.

Nancy June 9, 2009 12:12 PM

Whoever it is, will still have to put up the picture of President Palin in his Senate office on January 21, 2013.

So, it's all good.

latinchic June 9, 2009 12:17 PM

If it's true she's irritating them, well then Governor Palin:

THANK YOU.

They've been irritating US forever.

Jenny June 9, 2009 12:18 PM

I hate the low-life people that talk about someone behind their backs.
It illustrates how many punks and chickens we have in our party. They can't confront Obama, but have no problem tearing down conservatives, though anonymously.

CruelaDev June 9, 2009 12:21 PM

What's that saying..."Fear strikes the hearts of men"...LMAO

toughluck June 9, 2009 12:21 PM

I went to the linked article on Mel martinez comments and, frankly took it for constructive criticism. We DO need to dispel the notion that Republicans are the party of the rich, Need to engage the hispanic population, etc. Palin stands for education, family adn moral issues, etc. What is Palin's stand on 'affording a path to citicenship to illegal aliens?.

I believe the Hispanic vote (and the disgruntled jewish votes) are key to winning the next elections. So, lets get Mel Martinez and the hispanics on board.

Carmelo Junior June 9, 2009 12:21 PM

I think the more Sarah makes Americans think that she is not the usual elite Republican, the more chances she has to win big among moderates. Many moderates hate the GOP rich white male dominated elite.

That is why, and check this please: when liberals talk about republican elite they don't talk about a specific person. They just talk about the "rich, old, white male". So voters can have that "racist sexist republican" in their subconscious.

But alas! When talking about Sarah Palin they just go "she is a moron", "she is a barby", "she hunts animals from helicopters" , "she is a religious zealot", etc. These are attacks aimed to undermine her historic mantra of being a woman at the top of consideration to become president of the Unisted States!

Sarah takes down all those "racist, old, rich white men" Republicans message that they always send to the American voters.

Sarah is so threatening to them, that their main goal is to talk about any "white, old, rich" Republican male and the media only covers "white, old, rich, republican males" to try to put Sarah away and to make GOP voters nominate a white man.

The main goal of the liberal media is for the GOP to nominate a WHITE MAN! They know that against the first "black" president a republican candidate who is the same "White man" has no chances.

So when you see that MSMBC and CNN praise people like Romney, Gingrich, Sanford, Thomson or Gulliani they are giving them enough propaganda so the GOP voters vote for them in the primaries.

The media made the GOP to nominate McCain so Hillary or Obama could destroy him in the general elections!

Huckabee would have had better showing than McCain against Obama. He would have lost anyways but not by 9 million votes. And if he would also pick Sarah Palin as vp, they still might have lost but for only 2 or three million votes.

Don't pay attention to the media and their Sarah bashing. The more they attack her and call her "moron" is just signal that they are scared to death of her@

Jay June 9, 2009 12:22 PM

I am not a bit concerned about Sarah Palin raising money. I have never contributed more than $100 in my life to any political candidate, but the day that Sarah annouces her run for the presidency, she can count on me for thousands of dollars in contributions.

By the way, that individual who discussed that one needs 500 million dollars to be "in the game", think about this: 1 million people giving five hundred dollars would get her there. I believe that she could get elected because she is "real" and like Newt Gingrich, she really has the best of intentions for her country. That is not something that I think can be said for our current occupant of the White House.

lonestar June 9, 2009 12:29 PM

Name that senator - Kay Bailey Hutchison or some insecure white male.

CrabbyCon June 9, 2009 12:30 PM

Here is my blog/account of my ride down to DC last night in hopes to see the Gov before & after the NRSC/NRCC dinner!

My Almost, Sorta-Kinda, But Not Really, Encounter With Sarah Palin

wOOt!

lonestar June 9, 2009 12:31 PM

Early in 2008, Shuster and Todd were on MSNBC talking excidedly how they were getting to choose the candidates. Seems they got their way.

ranchocon June 9, 2009 12:45 PM

Carmelo -- "XXX" lol. Well played, sir

Lipstick June 9, 2009 12:47 PM

Well, if Sarah is irritating these cowards she is doing a bang up job. The more people like that she irritates the more I like her.

However, when they say irritated, what they really mean is they are disappointed that 7 months after the election Palin is still the hottest, brightest star in the GOP. She can have the nomination if she wants it. THAT is what really irritates them.

Just to clarify: By "hottest" I don't mean in looks, but in being what everyone is interested in talking about and too.

By the way. If you are a big time Senator and you have some type of opinion or constructive critisim of Palin be a big boy or girl and let them print your name. When someone won't, then that tells me it is hogwash what you are saying.

Carmelo Junior June 9, 2009 12:48 PM

Another anooying post on C4P:

Please start from now securing IOWA, NEW HAMPHIRE AND MICHIGAN FOR SARAH IN 2012. Do not wait untill she announces(face it, she will!)her candidacy. Sarah should win the first two contest in a row. If she defeat Romney in Michigan, she already had the nomination. Puerto Rico primary will not count a lot for her :(

But still I hope she travels Puerto Rico and secure that Latino vote for november! McCain was an idiot ignoring the Latino vote.

Gabriel McKee June 9, 2009 12:52 PM

I think you're right on the critic being Graham. He's a classless little punk.

Jim Demint is a good guess on the other one. He's a great person, and a great senator.

ErichNTejas June 9, 2009 12:57 PM

I haven't contributed to SarahPAC in a while. This gives me motivation. Thanks jerks!

PEC June 9, 2009 1:00 PM

Would Graham say it. Yes. Did he no? SC is not a battleground State. It is Martinez.

CruelaDev June 9, 2009 1:01 PM

Where was Meghan MAC?...Was she banned from the room?...

PEC June 9, 2009 1:05 PM

Lipstick - She is hotter, politically, physically, personally and everything else vs this group of losers.

PEC June 9, 2009 1:13 PM

Oh the last one was Jim Demint. It has his fingerprints all over it.
Look I never gave a dime to a politician until I gave to SARAHPAC and the AFT. Didn't trust any of them. I will max out for Sarah. Read this elitists, I will give as much on my little middle class income as one of those rich snobs and no I am not from Alaska and no Sarah didn't bring 20000 Alaskans to Auburn, NY. Pass the hat around there and Sarah could have got a chunk.
Now speaking of that if the Polar Express does leave Alaska again soon we will need to be better prepared. Even if she doesn't endorse it we should have had people passing SARAHPAC info out in Auburn, NY. She is going to draw a crowd wherever she goes. We just have to be ready.

Lipstick June 9, 2009 1:13 PM

PEC:

HA

Your right! It's just that I'm thinking Todd is hotter physically than Sarah but I understand where you men are coming from.

cj June 9, 2009 1:24 PM

We need to figure out who the third one is because if he doesn't realize the economy has already imploded, the GOP has bigger problems than Governor Palin stealing their thunder.

cjh

CruelaDev June 9, 2009 1:26 PM

3rd one...easy..MAC!

PEC June 9, 2009 1:32 PM

Lipstick - I can't say this about Todd. When Sarah was named as McCains VP pick my 18 y/o daughter said man her husband is hot. Once again I don't judge mens looks but my daighter can qualify as a judge.

wisetrog June 9, 2009 1:35 PM

Did you see them at the Yankee game. Both of them put on their A game when it comes sexy. Scorching couple. Most gorgeous couple in the world bar none.

PEC June 9, 2009 1:38 PM

My view on the Senate. Take Demint, the 2 from OK on a trip and drop a bomb on the rest of them and Republicans would not have lost anything.
Satements like these make solid #s from SARAHPAC just that more imprtant. We really need to get the word out to Pro_palin sites to drum up support over the next couple of weeks. If there is that couple of extra dollars or if you can skip a night out and give to SARAHPAC every dime will count. The bigger the # the more we will prove these losers wrong.

sarah palin rocks June 9, 2009 1:41 PM

Rush just told a caller that half the room at that GOP dinner did not like that Sarah was "the center of attention" last night per CNN. He called them a bunch of Country Club Blue Bloods.

Rush is talking about the Sarah/Newt GOP dinner controversy now.

He is also talking about Michelle Laxalt, a Republican Consultant, who savaged Rush and dissed Palin big time on Chris Matthew's Hardball yesterday. Rush says she represents many in the GOP.

katiejane June 9, 2009 1:53 PM

Palin supporters need to accept that too many in the GOP establishment are looking for her to fail and they are just as willing as the Democrats to help diminsh her.

IMO social conservatives embarrass the insiders. They are almost as likely to think we're rubes & dumbies who should stay in our place as the Left does. Associating with conservatives hurts their image of themselves.

Know your enemy - and it isn't always a Democrat.

section9 June 9, 2009 2:09 PM

What a bunch of clueless goobers. These Republicans couldn't win an election agains Paul Tibbets for Mayor of Hiroshima.

Sarah is our conservative champion. These people don't get it. Those CongressCritters who were trying to get their picture with Palin last night did get it.

Yogi41 June 9, 2009 2:28 PM

Name That Senator:

1. Martinez (Florida, battleground state)

2. Graham (endorsed McCain early)

3. Thune, Kyl or Ensign (all will run in 2012)

section9 June 9, 2009 2:58 PM

Mel Martinez is one of the reasons the National GOP, as well as the Florida party, hit the skids. There was absolutely no decent candidate recruitment during his tenure as RNC Chair.

Well, except for all the unofficial White House and RNC help that went towards Mittens, and you see how much good that did.

Doug (formerly DB) June 9, 2009 3:47 PM

Can we get the audio of what Rush said about the so-called Sarah/Newt controvery at last night's dinner.

juju June 9, 2009 7:11 PM

Does anyone know if any of the others i.e., Huck, Romney, etc. were at the dinner???

Uffda June 10, 2009 1:49 AM

Grrrr.... I am so sick of the Republican party.

SarahPac, here I come!
