NOW Defends Governor Palin and Her Daughters; Steele Calls for a Boycott; TNA and C4P Say Call His Sponsors!

Finally, the National Organization for Women has issued a statement on Letterman’s sexist “jokes” about Governor Palin and her daughters:

After two nights of “jokes” at the expense of Palin and her family, Letterman tried to explain himself and offer something of an apology. On his June 10 show, Letterman said he was referring to Palin’s 18-year-old daughter, Bristol -- not the 14-year-old daughter who actually accompanied Palin on her New York trip. Letterman said “I recognize that these are ugly” jokes. NOW agrees. Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.

The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days -- it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin’s “slutty flight attendant look” -- yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician’s appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman’s stature, who appears on what used to be known as “the Tiffany Network” (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer.

On that point, it’s important to note that when Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old she was the target of numerous insults based on her appearance. Rush Limbaugh even referred to her as the “White House dog.” NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren’t professed conservatives.

I agree. We should protest when this happens to any woman.

We support Amy Siskind of The New Agenda, a non-partisan organization that stands up for all women regardless of political agenda. They are what NOW was supposed to be before NOW became a partisan organization.

Amy wrote an excellent article at the Huffington Post today:

When is sexism acceptable? The answer should be never. Yet for many feminists in our country, only certain types of women have been worth defending. When a conservative woman is the target of an attack, many so-called feminists stay silent. This “selective sexism”, or speaking out against sexism on a case by case basis, does not advance our national dialogue on women’s issues. Rather, selective sexism allows a dangerous level of permissible sexism to live and breed in our country. The only way for the women of this country to truly move forward is to unite and speak out against all forms of sexism regardless of party or the source of the attack.

I wrote to Amy earlier today:

The way I see it we are all upset about this for multiple reasons, but there is at least one common reason for all of us. The one reason that we are all united in being disgusted about is sexism and making light of violence against women.

Conservatives are also upset by the apparent double standard. We know that this would not be done to the child of a liberal Democrat.

But if we allow it to happen to one person because of that person’s political beliefs, then, as Miss Attila pointed out yesterday, it is a form of a misogynist law -- telling women that if they think a certain way, they are fair game for sexist attacks on themselves and their daughters.

It’s just not right.

I have no idea about your political background. We probably don’t agree on the finer points, but I would venture to guess that on the big picture, we agree. And that’s what the women’s movement should be about -- the big picture of advancing the role of all women and advocating a culture that respects women.

Her response:

That is the premise of TNA – working on unity among women – the issues we all agree on – and that is the vast, vast majority. At TNA we decided to leave political party and choice aside and focus on everything else – and that is plenty!

I should correct myself. It was done to a liberal Democrat. It was done to Hillary Clinton last year. It wasn’t right then either. I noted that today when I was on Tammy Bruce’s radio show.

You’ll notice that we have added TNA to our “Important Links.” We like what they stand for, and we are proud to stand with them to defend women of every political persuasion and background. Perhaps TNA’s success will serve as a positive rebuke to NOW which will encourage NOW to get back to its roots.

TNA is urging everyone to contact Letterman’s sponsors. We agree with them. We urge everyone to contact Letterman’s sponsors and continue to contact them until Letterman is fired or suspended.

The Hill reports that Michael Steele is calling for “an informal boycott” of Letterman’s show.

“Letterman’s joke about Sarah and Todd Palin’s daughter was thoughtless and tacky,” Steele said in a statement to The Hill. “I saw his explanation for the joke, but sometimes the easiest thing to do is simply say ‘I’m sorry.’”

[...]

Steele seemed to suggest on Thursday that viewers supporting Palin should tune out from Letterman in protest of “tasteless jokes.”

“When Letterman starts making tasteless jokes about kids, it’s time to turn the channel,” he said.

Don’t just tune out. Contact his sponsors. Don’t stop until he is fired or suspended. Send multiple emails. Call multiple times. Don’t stop. It works. Companies are already pulling their ads off of CBS's website. Keep the pressure on. Don't stop.

UPDATE by RAM: Hillbuzz has great strategies for how to get Letterman’s sponsors to listen. Read their posts here, here, here, and here.

It does work.

Embassy Suites was on CBS's website, and they pulled all their ads off CBS's website.

The RGA pulled all of their ads off CBS's website as well.

There are at least one or two others that have done the same.

We just need the big ones like Mars, Best Western, Best Foods/Hellman's, and others like them to remove themselves as well.

It's good to see NOW and other feminist groups start to wake up to the fact that attacking Sarah Palin and her family with anti-woman rhetoric is not a thing to encourage.

For our part, we should also be consistant when, in the future, someone on our side takes a shot a Hillary or Chelsea or other liberal woman that we discourage it. I think that's what Governor Palin would want us to do.

Be still my heart! Maybe we're finally getting somewhere!

This is OT, and if it's been posted earlier, my apologies, but I just learned that Gov. Palin will be interviewed live tomorrow from Texas by Matt Lauer on "Today."

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/

Where will Gov. Sarah Palin make her first televised response to David Letterman? NBC's Today show.

Matt Lauer interviews Palin live tomorrow morning on Today. Palin will be live from Texas, where she made an announcement today regarding the Alaska pipeline project. The NBC release says Palin will talk about the pipeline, "her thoughts on the direction of the GOP, and she will address the recent controversy involving David Letterman and her family."

Lauer last interviewed Palin in November

It will work. I've contacted every one of the sponsors that was on The New Agenda site, plus all of the ones on Hillbuzz. I'm taking HB's advice to circulate this off-site as well: to church groups, senior citizen centers, women shelters, etc...

The trick is to keep going every day until our goal is met. It will get discouraging at times, but keep going. This story will drop off in terms of the media covering it, but we can't let that stop us. Even if this story is not covered, we have to keep writing, calling and faxing. We'll eventually win.

Contacting sponsors WORKS.

I cannot say how proud I am to the sexism & misogyny getting slapped down. David Letterman will wish he had never uttered the words "Sarah Palin".

This HAS been a good week for Gov. Palin. Her weekend in New York, her day in Texas.

Too see C4P,HotAir,Hillbuzz,bloggers,NOW,feminists,conservatives,& liberals working together for the protection of women & children makes a person feel really good inside.

Wrong is wrong no matter what your political affiliation.

I hear that Sarah Palin will be on the Today show with Matt Lauer tomorrow about this (and hopefully the Palin Pipeline!). Has anyone else heard this?

We have the best barbarians around!

Doug (formerly DB) June 11, 2009 9:31 PM

I've sent emails today to all of the sponsors listed. If we all keep this up, it just may work. Even more publicity could be forthcoming tomorrow with Governor Palin's Today Show appearance.

Just Sayin June 11, 2009 9:31 PM

I hate to be ot but... Can we get the Sarah radio interview up? Were dyin ova here.

Also, don't get too excited about this move by NOW. You can tell in the final parahgraph that aren't one bit sincire about anything they said. Where were they during the election???

I would bet you, but than I'd be out 10 bucks I could give to SarahPac! Ha Ha Ha.

Your right though. I'm sure Lauer will steer to the Letterman filth for as long as he can,( CBS is an enemy network, they love to devour eachother). I hope Sarah can grab him by the nose and lead him back to the Palin Pipeline.

Also, do you think she should dump on the GOP backstabbers, or take the high ground? (Personally I'd rip those traders a new one, but that's why I'm not in politics)

off topic: How are you doing Upinak? How is the fishing up season so far?

the GOP hacks are watching.. and after the Eddie Burke show with Sarah giving props to McCain, I doubt that they are going to get dumped on.

port ty for asking. Fishing is IN! Russian is full, Kings are in Ship, Montana, Talkeetna and a few others *wink*. It looks like a GREAT year for fishing. RAM needs to get her butt up here.
But I have to be careful for a bit, as I have an old injury spring back up and I can barely pick up 10 lbs. So I doubt I will be fishing anything but trout this weekend. :(

Why would Sarah agree to be interviewed by NBC's Matt Liar. How many times does she have to be beaten over the head by an MSM hack before she wakes up and realizes she is going to be savaged everytime by these A-holes?

I emailed the general managers of the CBS affiliates here in Missouri. I told them I would be boycotting any local sponsors of the Late Show as well as the national sponsors. Keep the pressure on folks.

LoveThatGirl June 11, 2009 10:18 PM

david letterman and his show advocate violence toward women and children.
Only a pedophile would suggest A.Rod and a 14 year old child.
cbs should release letterman from his contract for suggesting such an act.
All men regardless of age should be held accountable for their actions, whether in words or deeds.
As I recall Don Imus was Fired from his position until he publicly apologized.
This is much worse than what Don Imus said.
This was directed on a 14 year old child with a older man.
david letterman is a perverted individual and should NOT be allowed to continue advocating pedophilia on his show.
Regardless of "his" pathetic excuse, this will NOT be Tolerated.

She repeats the line that she "lifted" from gingrich's speech, that she kept accepting and declining and accepting a speaking gig at Monday's dinner, that she lacks follow-through, etc.

I have no idea why these people seem to think her GOP star is falling just because they say so. And still, Sarah thanks her political enemies. They couldn't hold a candle to her.

Not to be negative but NOW was kinda sslloooowww coming out with a statement against Letterman don't ya think?

Perhaps because the tide seemed to be with Sarah they decided to jump on the band wagon? Nah.

The key to Lauer's interview is it is LIVE. Sarah should only do LIVE interviews, I think she is smarter than Matt and I think she can have her 'Cuda claws out in case she needs them.

The pressure is off, she is not running for national office and she has had a great week. Thing about Sarah is she can be kinda mean and forceful and not seem b***** about it.

I think Sarah has been preparing for going back into the lions den. I am sure Meg has been helping her put together some talking points on key issues. Hopefully there were also some ground rules set up like no Levi questions that kind of stuff.

Sarah learns quickly, I don't think she will be caught off guard with her running the show.

I will be sure to pray in the morning for her interview to be a homerun.

Matt is such a jerk and lets face it, Sarah will look great with her hair extra long these days, Matt will be trying to keep his jaw up I'm sure.

Advantage: Sarah

Ring Ring...

Sarah: Hello, Sarah Palin

Couric: Hello, Sarah this is Katie Couric from CBS news, remember me?

Sarah: Oh, yes Katie, how are you?

Katie: Well, I just heard about the big AGIA pipeline deal and that you had scheduled an interview with my old buddy Matt. I was wondering if maybe I could do a quick interview with you to put on my highly rated nightly news program. You know, just a girls sit down and chat about AGIA and old times? What do you say?

Sarah: Oh, Katie, I would love to! Only problem is that, well, the GOP is having sort of a boycott against CBS over this whole Letterman making crude jokes about my lovely underage daughter. I have to stand with my party on that, and well, I just couldn't go on CBS at this time. You know, come to think of it, fellow feminist that you are, I haven't seen YOUR comment against Letterman making these jokes. Don't YOU have a couple of daughters? Well, perhaps I missed your statement what with being busy getting these oil boys to put the finishing touches on the biggest project ever in North America. Oh, that's my call waiting... Oh, look it's Bill O'Reilly returning my call. Gotta go.

Just got to say this. I think this entire thing with Letterman started at the highest levels. Just look back at Sarah's great week.

Auburn was very, very successful. The high levels says this has to be stopped and stopped now. So Dunn comes out with his plagiarizing article. That little dust up didn't last long.

Then came Sarah in Long Island and that too was very successful Sarah doing good work two days in a row and making big time news without seeking it. Then came the financial assessment of her work in AK. This was to make her look like she was a failure in AK. and not the great fiscally responsible person she claims to be. This too fell on its face. Can't really do too much with figures that lie. But, nice try.

Then the stir up at the dinner, but that was just the "good ole boy thing". Sarah didn't cave and was the hit of the dinner.

Now, the higher ups really have to put a stop to this. She is getting out of hand. No interviews except for a few minutes with Sean and pics. and comments are all over the net. They are really getting concerned on how to stop this woman

Ok..Let play dirty. Who can we get to really put her down. If necessary we will hit her where it hurts (her kids) and we will use a "funny man" so it looks like a joke. If Sarah responds she will look like a fool that can't take a joke.

They under estimated Sarah and all of us. End of story. I feel so good. MORAL OF STORY: Never under estimate Sarah Palin.

AmeriCuda June 11, 2009 11:33 PM

Conservative Organizers! Yahoooooo!

wisetrog June 11, 2009 11:40 PM

As Tammy suggested wonderfully, this is about fighting back this crap now, rather than let it affect her later. The entire MSM and leftwing beat Sarah pretty badly during the election because no one stood up for her. Everyone thought this would be the norm and Palin can just be thwacked. They were wrong.

Even Chris Matthews was surprised by her fighting back. This puts everyone on notice. If the MSM or the Obamas pull any more sexist crap, we WILL fight back.

Even DKos will think twice because every time they do it, it will make Sarah's moral higher ground all the higher. That won't stop them though.

When Sarah runs, she doesn't have to face goofy questions like whether her son is her own or not. This automatically takes off the "Jerry Springer" vibes off her.

The guy at gop12 advised her to take this lying down. Now that Sarah has brought even NOW on board, that advice sounds so foolish.

wisetrog June 11, 2009 11:41 PM

The Clique is very gloomy today.

narciso June 12, 2009 12:01 AM

You know it occurs to me, what we ended up doing, because of all the times, it had been done to our standardbearer, a little Rule 12 action. It was kind of involuntary
like Tom Cruise, under pressure to pass the bar, actually learned the law, I never emailed a tv show, contacted an advertiser, before.

Ashley June 12, 2009 12:07 AM

I am so happy to be a part of this positive movement to call out sexism. How refreshing it is that people are beginning to cross party lines and fight against a non-partisan issue like sexism. This IS a new chapter in equal rights for women - holding those accountable who participate in blatant sexism - and the best part about it is that it is something that we can all agree on - republicans, democrats, women, men, etc.

I agree that we as C4Per's, Palinites, Conservatives, must also speak up for ALL women who are put down by sexism, especially from this point out. It doesn't matter if they're republican or democrat - if it's sexism we're going to call it out. And I hope that liberals and women's groups would do the same.

With that being said, what should I say to the sponsors? Anyone have an example of a letter they sent. I will be emailing all the sponsors tonight, as well as, CBS, again.

Nancy June 12, 2009 12:27 AM

juju,
I was thinking the same thing about not underestimating Governor Palin.

I would not be surprised if throughout the coming years, she doesn't coax, lead, pull by the sheer force of her goodness, the NOW organization to start advocating for a culture of life. She has no guile? about her. She never once asked any organizations to come to her defense, or her daughter's defense. But yet they did step up and defended a conservative, Christian, prolife woman. This is something we are always looking for them, they have done it for Governor Palin. It is a step in the right direction, toward following the principles Governor Palin stands for? We can only pray so!

riograndevalleygirl June 12, 2009 12:37 AM

NOW finally speaks up but is unable to resist a jab at conservatives with the unfortunately incorrect Limbaugh statement. Transcript of that show in which the producer mixes up the photos to which they referred:

LIMBAUGH: Thank you. This show’s era of dominant influence is just beginning. We are now the sole voice of sanity, the sole voice of reason. We are the sole voice of opposition on all television. This is the only place you can tune to to get the truth of the opposition of the one-party dictatorial government that now will soon run America. Oh, I mean, we are only beginning to enjoy dominance and prosperity. Most of these things on the in-out list are not even funny, but a couple of them–one of them in particular is.
