Why Aren't We Angrier at Letterman Labeling Palin an Anti-Semite?

I realize I'm a bit late to the outrage over David Letterman's vomit-inducing anti-Palin 'jokes', but trust me I have been watching - and the coverage here has been spectacular. That said, there is one other angle to this story which I am surprised is not getting more coverage. This little joke is rightly overshadowed by the outrage over Letterman's perverted sexual 'humor', but I cannot let this issue die without going back to item #3 from the "Top 10 Highlights of Sarah Palin's Trip to New York":

3. Finally met one of those Jewish people Mel Gibson's always talking about

Maybe I'm a little oversensitive about these things, but as both a Palin supporter and a practitioner of Judaism...well...Let's just say that I would tell you how I felt, but that would require me to use a long string of Yiddish profanity and this is a family friendly site.

In my opinion, Letterman was out of line here on three fronts. First, he is assuming that we all get the joke - as if we all assume that people not from the East or West Coasts are bigoted, xenophobic anti-Semites. Unfortunately for Dave, the idea that such comments are funny is actually limited to the elitist circles in which he apparently runs.

Second, he assumes that it's funny to joke about anti-Semitism - and it's not. Frankly, I found this joke about as funny as the time somebody (knowing my religion) asked me what the difference between a pot roast and a Jew is (the answer being that that the pot roast doesn't scream when you put it in the oven).

And finally, I would think that he owes Alaska's Jewish community an apology for just assuming that they don't exist (and yes, I know there are Jews in Alaska, because I distinctly remember Gov. Palin having a bill signing at a synagogue last year). Listen, I grew up in Colorado, so I will admit that Western Jewish communities are much smaller than those on the coasts - but I can guarantee you that there are Jews all over the country, and people meet them all of the time. Frankly, the assertion that an Alaskan - or any other rural American - has never met a Jew is ridiculous, and the fact that Letterman even thought about cracking that joke is evidence that he lives in a New York bubble.

Of course, those of us who admittedly spend too much time tracking Gov. Palin know that she has not only met Jews in her life, but keeps a small Israeli flag in her office. And maybe I'm just getting too worked up over this - but somebody had to say it.

And while we're on the subject of Letterman - I think going on The Tonight Show would be a great move for both Gov. Palin and Conan O'Brien. However, I personally think it would be even funnier for Sarah to make Letterman the second-ranking late night host on CBS (at least for one night) by going on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson.

I have already posted this on a couple of other threads but TVNewser is reporting that Sarah will be live on the Today show with Matt Lauer to respond to Dave Letterman's remarks, tomorrow morning.

You raise an important point. I have to admit that I missed it because I was so angry at the Willow insult.

LindaW June 11, 2009 11:21 PM

I think because Letterman is Jewish (is he Jewish?) he feels he could joke about it.

Gelston June 11, 2009 11:22 PM

Thank you for your comments, Adam.
As someone who is a Christian but who attended the largest Jewish university in the US of A, I think your comments are perfect.

They are especially relevant when we look at how Mr. Obama has treated Israel in the last few weeks. No one called his Muslim speech in Cairo a pro-Israel lovefest.

And who was it recently who said the Jews are keeping Mr. Obama away from him? A Rev Wright from Chi-town? Where is Mr. Obama's statement on that?
That's right he issues statements only when people who do third trimester abortions are killed.

Thank you again for stepping up to the plate on this, Adam.
You know how much I admire you.

Get the Jews to join and get Dave off air PERMANENTLY!

You can do it sweetie.

you know, i love craig ferguson and i think she would be a great guest on his show. thats an awesome suggestion.

Jenny June 11, 2009 11:29 PM

Thanks for pointing that out Adam.

I think she should be Leno's first guest when he returns on the air.
Ferguson is under Letterman's company World Wide Pants. So I don't know.

Adam Brickley, aka "ElephantMan" June 11, 2009 11:34 PM

Letterman is not Jewish - but even if he was, this is inappropriate.
Jewish humor is one thing, making fun of anti-Semites is even funny on occasion. However, it can be taken too far, even by Jewish comedians (I usually love Mel Brooks, for instance - but I thought the Inquisition scene in "History of the World Part I" was way out of line).

Accusations of anti-Semitism are not something you just throw around in jest. To label someone a bigot without any evidence is serious, and I don't care if it's just a joke. There's a line, and I think he crossed it.

Steve Altman June 11, 2009 11:35 PM

Adam, You are absolutely right and i am sorry I did not comment on that. I did notice it and had similar thoughts as yours, but got caught up in the sexual comments angle and overlooked them.

LoveThatGirl June 11, 2009 11:40 PM

I had no idea the fool had said that. I am still very upset about his remarks toward Sarah and Willow. I did not watch the video, nor did I read the print on the top 10 list. I only saw what was said on Fox News and no one mention #3 if they did, I was NOT aware of it.

I am a great support of Israel and the Jewish people. That fool needs to be dealt with on all fronts. This is another thing I will e-mail the FCC about.

You make some very important points here. I absolutley agree this joke was also deplorable.

If you didn't see the actual show, Number 9 was also a xenophobia joke:

"Laughed at all of the crazy foreigners going into the UN"

Rusty June 11, 2009 11:45 PM

Actually, I can't remember if I saw it on Team Sarah, or on the Governor's web page, but there were several pictures of her and little Piper attending a Hanukkah celebration in Alaska last December. She was standing next to the rabbi of the synagogue. Perhaps C4P could do some research and put that photo up with the post and spread it around the internet to show how clueless Letterman is. A picture is worth a thousand words!

upinak June 11, 2009 11:51 PM

Adam don't forget that others are saying that she is anti-semetite. Olbermann has, I don't remember where I read it but someone said that the crazy guy who shot the guard at the Holocaust Museum was a Palin supporter.

People are insane right now.

It is like the second coming of Christ (sorry Adam) and people are freaking that the sky is falling and blaming it on Sarah.

Adam, I'm with LTG on this one; I saw Tommy Christopher comment negatively on this, but I assumed he was referring to #9 (which I saw on the front photo of the video, which I have not watched). I didn't know about #3 until this post. I agree with you--that too is intolerable; the best thing to do there might be to get Alaska's rabbis to issue a statement denouncing it.

Thanks Adam for your post.

There was much offensive about the whole top 10 list, all of it bad.

People seem to throw the anti-Semite label around so carelessly. What evidence do they have that Sarah has ever said, acted or associated with anything anti-Semitic? The world has gone crazy. She seems to have a very good relationship with the Jewish community in AK. Just another sterotype I suppose. If you are an Evangelical Christian then you must be an anti-Semite. That is just not true.

Rusty June 12, 2009 12:22 AM

Yes those are the pictures. Good work finding them. Perhaps the C4P editors can embed them into the post!

LAW June 12, 2009 12:28 AM

Thanks, Adam, for bringing to our attention. I can't stand the guy so I didn't hear everything he said. I just know it'll be vile spueing from his mouth so it's an automatic turn off.

When I used to watch Ferguson before he started spueing some hateful things at the Gov. during the campaign, I saw that he thanked his employer David Letterman a lot. As Jenny says above, World Wide Pants is Letterman's production company.

I personally wouldn't go on their either.

Sapwolf June 12, 2009 12:31 AM

I'm gonna find that top ten list and check the other 8 out.

Thanks Adam.

Israel and Jews would be safer with Sarah. I just don't see her letting Israel go down if she can stop it.

From OlympicLeprechaun today on HA:

(commenting on Margaret Carlson's appearance today on Keith Olbermann's show on MSNBC)

"I hate to sink to their level, but my wellspring of forgiveness and tolerance has run dry. The day that this psychotic, venom-spewing POS (Olbermann) gets knifed in an alley will be the happiest day of my life.

As for this witch Carlson I seem to remember her tantrum in the wake of the 2000 election where in her desperation to obfuscate the issue of the Democrats discounting overseas military ballots, she referred to our servicemen as 'tax evaders'. I thought she couldn't possibly be any more stupid or morally repugnant than that. But now, to say that GOVERNOR PALIN IS SOMEHOW RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS KIND OF SICK INNUENDO HURLED AT HER AND IS THE VILLAIN FOR DEFENDING HER CHILD SINKS TO A LEVEL OR IRRATIONALITY AND EVIL THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ANY DECENT PERSON TO FIGURE OUT.

This is not political opposition anymore. These people are the ENEMY, every bit as much as Al-Qaeda. And FWIW I will crawl across broken glass to get Sarah Palin elected POTUS in 2012, if for no other reason than to see all of these DERANGED PSYCHOPATHS cleanse this nation by way of mass suicide."

Except for the allusion to Al-Qaeda I agree with everything written. This post, I believe, represents the anger, revulsion, disdain and outrage necessary for Palin supporters and conservatives to abandon still being CHARITABLE to Obama, the Far Left, and the MSM and even more importantly to spark their burning desire and passion to summon up, coalesce, and micro-target the ferocity of purpose and the indefatigable pursuit of electoral success to take back Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012.

GREAT insights, as always, Brother Adam. Letterman is consistently sophomoric----but this time, his words have literally violated two groups:
1. On the one hand, he's hurt the Palin family specifically, and all women and children in general.
2. But on the other hand, Letterman did make zenophobic and anti-Semitic comments!

Now we need to honor your suggestion, Adam, and complain vehemently about ALL of Letterman's recent "jokes."

The liberals always are quick to castigate anyone who states what they believe constitutes "hate speech." Now, let them righteously criticize liberal Letterman, too, if they truly care. If they fail to respond with proper indignation, then they reveal their hypocrisy, immoral values, and cowardice.

CruelaDev June 12, 2009 1:38 AM

Name one thing that they have not been able to overcome? Yeah...I for one would love to take

Chaya's World (posted @ 1:34AM EDT) offered a link that needs to be pasted in full here:

Alaska's Jewish Community on Palin Selection

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA -- (August 30, 2008)
M. Phillips

(lubavitch.com) Alaska’s Governor Sarah Palin, a relative unknown to most Americans until she was named McCain's running mate this Friday, enjoys wide popularity in her home state and the respect of the broader Jewish community there, Rabbi Yossi Greenberg, Chabad’s representative to Alaska’s Jewish community told Lubavitch.com.
“She’s established a great relationship with the Jewish community over recent years, and has attended several of our Jewish cultural gala events,” he said.

Palin has shown solidarity with Israel by signing a State of Alaska Resolution recognizing Israel's 60th Anniversary and its relationship with Alaska. In the resolution, Governor Palin pointed to Alaska’s special connection to Israel dating back to Alaska Airlines’ participation in the rescue of 40,000 Yemenite Jews when it airlifted them from Yemen to Tel Aviv during 1948 and 1949.

Drafted by members of the Alaska Legislation and heavily supported by Speaker of the House, Representative John Harris, Governor Palin signed the resolution in the presence of Alaska’s Jewish community leaders this June.

According to Greenberg, Governor Palin had plans to visit Israel with members of the Jewish community, which did not happen yet because of scheduling conflicts.

On a personal level, Greenberg was “impressed by Governor Palin’s remarks of hope and faith when she gave birth to a child with special needs.” Her words, he observed, were completely aligned with Judaism’s traditional views on embracing the birth of child with special needs as a gift of G-d, no less than is the birth of any baby.

Though Greenberg was unequivocal in stating that Chabad representatives do not endorse political candidates, and as spiritual leaders reach out to anyone regardless of political affiliation, he did say, "We all feel that the Governor is a remarkable, energetic, and good person."

Doug (formerly DB) June 12, 2009 8:49 AM

A couple points. First, I have to admit the "Finally met one of those Jewish people Mel Gibson's always talking about" joke went right over my head. I had no idea what Letterman was talking about. Second, Governor Palin has always been a staunch supporter of Israel, far more so than Obama. I would go so far as to say that Obama is almost almost anti-Israel. To this day I wish Governor Palin could have found a venue to deliver that pro-Israel anti-Iran speech she was going deliver in NY in September. I know it would have been great. Excellent job bringing this up, Adam. As I said earlier, I had no idea what the Mel Gibson thing was all about. Now I know.

Hypocrasy Reigns June 12, 2009 9:32 AM

The recent "jokes" by David Letterman were inexcusable. He should just be honest about it. They were hateful and misogynistic.
It's certainly not playing well anywhere but the most calloused of circles.

It seems to me that the Palin's are doing a good job of responding to this as well as the numerous other attacks. Sarah is a tough gal and seems perfectly capable of defending herself.

Some on this blog seem to be locked so intensely in a political position and stereotyping that it makes me wonder how they conduct relationships in the community with those that may not agree with all that they espouse. What do you do at work and just out shopping?

Extreme views on either the left or the right do nothing to further dialogue to come forth with sound solutions to the problems we face.

Most of America sits either center right or center left. Very few are actually extreme liberals or extreme conservatives. Just as few conservatives support the rantings of those espousing violence towards those favoring abortion rights, bullying gays, or abusing detainees, few liberals support the idiotic actions of Code Pink, environmental terrorists, or turning America into a Communist state.

Somewhere there has to be an atmosphere that is conducive to discussion of differences without presuming that the other person is an idiot.

From what I hear of Sarah Palin, she is able to have friendships with many who disagree with her positions on social issues---why does it have to be so black and white? On both the conservative and liberal blogs, those who are not in agreement with political persuasion of the blog are accused of being trolls (worthless human beings seems to be the definition).
I see this everywhere. How will there ever be a discussion if we all stand in our corners with our arms crossed glaring across the room at the other side? As in any argument, often the right solution lies in the middle.

FYI---I say the same thing when I visit blogs on the left.
Wondering where is the middle ground?

gardunne63 June 12, 2009 9:55 AM

Sarah all but wraps herself in the flag of Israel. Anyone who knows her & her background knows this. That's one of the major reasons why I support her so strongly.

Only the KozKids (who would believe any bad thing written/spoken about Sarah) and their ilk would fall for the "Sarah is an anti-Semite" canard.

The museum shooter did post on some Ron Paul boards last year, however according to some web sites. More the reason why Sarah should always stay very, very far away from Ron Paul.

I think Sarah's strong support of Israel will ensure that the Paulbots stay away from her.

Hypocrasy Reigns June 12, 2009 7:01 PM

Ummmm.....techno. Really, why would anyone tolerate wishing that a commentator would be stabbed or that the folks that disagree with your position should suffer mass suicide because they are not better than Al Qaida. That is dangerous rhetoric that stirs up very dangerous emotions. This is America and in America people come from diverse backgrounds, religions and yes politics. That is what the election process is about. The Palins are right to defend themselves and speak out against nasty comments about their daughters and women in general.

C. David June 13, 2009 12:45 AM

Uh...he didn't say she's anti-semitic. The joke is that she's parochial. Jeez, people. I thought liberals were supposed to be the one with no sense of humor.

Also, Israel is a foreign country. If you like it, that's great. I'd probably be more comfortable there than anywhere in the middle east myself. But it is a foreign country and its interests are not necessarily the US's (the point of the President's speech).

Robin_CT June 14, 2009 4:48 AM

Letterman was NOT joking that Palin is anti-Semitic! The joke was that there are no Jews in Alaska. Obviously it's not true; need I point out it was a joke? But, Adam, I enjoyed how one of your admirers commented that you could get "the Jews" to help get Dave fired, sweetie, because you're Jewish, and, therefore, must know all of 'em. Or maybe she meant we'll all listen to you because you're Jewish. Also, Adam, one of my 40-year-old co-workers from up-state New York recently told me I was her "first Jew." So, yeah, some Americans manage to live a long time without ever meeting a single Jew. Even in a coastal state. Jews actually make up a tiny percentage of the US population, so it must happen a lot. And the only reason Palin supports Israel is because her church tells her to. It's not out of some empathic love for Jews. I'm not saying she's anti-Semitic; there's no evidence for that at all. But her support for the state of Israel simply comes from her fundamentalist Christian religion, and that can't be denied and shouldn't be overlooked. Would she be supportive of an anti-Zionist Jew? It's an interesting question.
