Beltway "Conservatism" For Sale to the Highest Bidder

Remember David Keene? He's the chairman of the American Conservative Union, the organization that sponsors CPAC. He recently trashed Gov. Palin in a Newsmax article.

Guess what? He is selling conservatism to the highest bidder.

You have to read this Politico article to believe it:

The American Conservative Union asked FedEx for a check for $2 million to $3 million in return for the group’s endorsement in a bitter legislative dispute, then flipped and sided with UPS after FedEx refused to pay.

For the $2 million plus, ACU offered a range of services that included: “Producing op-eds and articles written by ACU’s Chairman David Keene and/or other members of the ACU’s board of directors. (Note that Mr. Keene writes a weekly column that appears in The Hill.)”

The conservative group’s remarkable demand — black-and-white proof of the longtime Washington practice known as “pay for play” — was contained in a private letter to FedEx , which was provided to POLITICO.

The letter exposes the practice by some political interest groups of taking stands not for reasons of pure principle, as their members and supporters might assume, but also in part because a sponsor is paying big money.

Read the whole thing. It's astonishing.

These are the sort of people Sarah Palin fought in Alaska. Now the Reformer must take her message to the whole nation. Conservatism is not for sale.

To have this man denounce you is an honor. Way to go, Sarah Palin. Once again, you're making the right enemies.

This will be tucked into Governor Palin's "to do" list, I'm sure.

Brian72 July 17, 2009 2:45 PM

CPAC 2010 is going to have to be saved by Sarah Palin now.

She's gonna be there, and she's gonna be the star of the show, hands down.

Resistance is futile, you will be Palinated.

alwaysfiredup July 17, 2009 2:46 PM

This is amazing. Palin doesn't even have to do anything, her opponents are self-immolating. I would expect Mr. Romney to be a bit concerned about his exposure here... :)

Tear the whiggish thugs to pieces.

TexMex July 17, 2009 2:53 PM

I knew that guy's named looked familiar!

She's looking better and better as each week goes by.

toughluck July 17, 2009 3:12 PM

And David Keene is called 'one the country's most astute political observers'?

How much did Newsmax get kicked back for that sentence? ARGH!!

Conservatism is not for sale!

Put that guy and the other CPAC directors in 'the list' :(

toughluck July 17, 2009 3:13 PM

Oops sorry, the other ACU directors.

latinchic July 17, 2009 3:15 PM

I don't think Sarah should show at CPAC unless this guy is fired.

Umm,

In 2008,

"DAVID KEENE ENDORSES GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY"

FTA in part:

"David A. Keene, Chairman of the American Conservative Union and long time Republican strategist, today endorsed the presidential candidacy of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney."

"In a statement issued today, Keene said that “while I certainly can’t pretend to speak for all or even most conservatives, the road that led me here today is one that many conservatives find themselves on and it is my hope that they will end up where I am today – convinced that Mitt Romney represents our best hope for 2008"

[

"Welcoming today’s announcement, Governor Romney said, “I am proud that David Keene has decided to join our campaign for conservative change that strengthens our military, economy and families. As Chairman of the American Conservative Union, he has greatly advanced the conservative movement. I look forward to working with him as our campaign moves forward.”

Interesting

Ted - Knock it off.

What we are seeing is a divide in this country between the political class and the populist class. Rasmussen had a poll on this months ago (which I could find it). The closest divide similar to the was in the 1820s between the old elites JQ Adams (yes after the first wave of founding fathers there was a class that thought they had almost a birthright to run this country) and the populists Jacksonians. Research this time period and you will see that this is closest to what we have today.

Ted,

I don't know how many times and in how many ways I have to tell you that you are banned from commenting here. Your comments will be deleted. Please stop now or you are just becoming as hateful and annoying as the Palin-haters.

jimr3 July 17, 2009 3:25 PM

Wikipedia says Keene endorsed Romney's presidential campaign in December of 2007.

David Keene is a Quisling who gave money to Specter. He is part of the problem.

Of course, he is a Romney guy.

Ted, you were told not to post here.

Our country has become almost an oligarchy, an elite group effort tyranny. Those who want to be part of that elite few who rule us are willing to do anything to get that power. They cannot stand that a Sarah Palin exists.

As Dumbledore tells Harry
"Do you have any idea how much tyrants fear the people they oppress? All of them realize that, one day, amongst their many victims, there is sure to be one who rises against them and strikes back."
J.K. Rowling, The Half-Blood Prince
(for all you Harry Potter fans :)

I wonder if Rush is going to comment about this.

K. Carpenter July 17, 2009 3:42 PM

I guess we know now how Romney continues to win the CPAC votes but cannot win anything else. I guess Romney has paid for his support. He does have more money than any of the other candidates.

jimr3 July 17, 2009 3:43 PM

Here is a video of David Keene introducing Mitt Romney at this year CPAC.

But then again was this an introduction of Romney or was it a glowing endorsement for his candidacy in 2012? Watch the video and you be the judge.

Keene’s speech begins 5 minutes into the video.

I don't find it astonishing. It's just another redistribution scam. Only the money's taken by false pretense as opposed to gunpoint.

Lipstick July 17, 2009 3:56 PM

Well, well isn't that special?

Amazing that everyone is so quick to call Gov. Palin all these names, how dumb she is blah blah blah and even comment about how she always has a family distraction going on.

Seems that if they were vetted like Sarah is 24/7 WAY more than the fact your daughter has a bum for an ex would come out now doesn't it? HMMMMM

If I were a young journalist with out a family or responsibilities I could really get some good press going around and opening up closet doors of all these Palin haters.

They have nothing on her, she is so clean, yet sniff, sniff what is that smell coming from your closet? I would say it was skeletons in it but NO it's fresh meat baby still just a stinkin'.

Rusty July 17, 2009 3:57 PM

I don't think Sarah should attend CPAC unless it cleans itself up - which it won't. Instead, I think she should "counter program" the CPAC convention, by inviting young leading conservatives - from the local, state, and national level - to a convention, with panel discussions and open townhalls, to discuss how conservative principles can be implemented at all levels of government.

CPAC has evolved into being seen as a far right, verbal bomb throwing, "radical" group by most people and the media. For Sarah to attend CPAC and give a red meat speech will only play into the characture that she is an extreme right wing idealogue. She gains nothing from this.

Her biggest problem right now is women. Women by and large don't like idealogical, confrontational politics. They like politicians who can reasonably present ideas and show how these ideas can improve life for their families and communities. The Dems have been very good at this. Republicans have been poor at this. If Sarah wants to win women over - and become President- she needs to show how conservative principles will improve peoples lives without all the red meat speeches and rhetoric. Sarah is great at doing this. This is why she was so successful in Alaska politics. She needs to get back to this and stay away from the red meat speeches and rhetoric.

I have been digging around to see if I can find anything on Romney or his foundation making donations to the ACU or CPAC, have not found anything yet but I did run across this little interesting tidbit a moment ago.

Kathryn Jean Lopez of NRO’s “The Corner” March 12, 2007

“My Soul & Mitt Romney”

In part:

“Just a few quick facts, for the record: Romney's foundation gave $5,000 to the National Review Institute, a fact fully disclosed at the time. The other $5,000 that post refers to was from a group called Evangelicals for Mitt. The contributions were among others solicited by NRI to defray the costs of the NRO 10th Anniversary event it hosted.”

[

“Back in 2005 — long before that $5,000 — again, I was dismissing Mormon-problem concerns. In March 2005 I wrote about his leadership on religious freedom in Massachusetts. You get the idea. Anyone who’s been reading NRO knows it’s been the issues, stupid, that have moved me toward Romney — with full knowledge that the good comes with a bad history. Argue I’m stupid for buying it, but $5,000, while appreciated by NRI, does not buy you NR/NRO/K-Lo love. If a buy-off was the intention (it wasn't) … he's made better investments.”

Curious

Steven July 17, 2009 4:10 PM

When did Keane denounce Palin?

redneckgal July 17, 2009 4:12 PM

This is why they all fear Sarah. She cleaned up the stench in Alaskan politics and she will help get people elected to help clean up the stench in D.C. She has been invited to Iowa to speak at the Reagan shindig. She hasn't commited yet. Probable waiting until after her resignation. Romney will have a hard time explaining his goverment ran health care plan in Mass. It is a total failure!

jimr3 July 17, 2009 4:13 PM

Steven,

Here:

Steven July 17, 2009 4:21 PM

Got it Jim, thanks. Yeah, I think Palin should still go to CPAC and straighten them out. Especially since we know that Keane despises her. It will be her way of checking those in the conservative movement and calling them to a higher standard. What better place to do that but at CPAC?

Chappy July 17, 2009 4:32 PM

Rusty & Steven,

I tend to agree with both of you. CPAC leadership needs to be cleaned up, and Sarah can make a big impact there. She doesn't need to throw red meat, she already has the base, the grassroots.

I like Rusty's idea of another venue for Sarah to discuss issues that would be meat served somewhat cooked for the independents, giving them some kitchen table common sense.

Timothy July 17, 2009 5:22 PM

This also involves Grover Norquist and the organization "Americans For Tax Reform". I wonder how much these tea parties are costing UPS and other companies?

TangledThorns July 17, 2009 5:37 PM

This guy Keene.. has to go.

happymullah July 17, 2009 5:38 PM

That's why I never like party loyalty because it makes the leadership entrenched and hierarchical and NOT responsive to the grassroots.
They get away with their misdeeds by hiding behind the banner of party unity. They demand loyalty in order to silence dissenting voices.
That's why I call the GOP establishment the American Politburo.

Sarah is challenging them now, as she expands beyond the meaning of her remark that her son is not a Republican and that she will support candidates of any political affiliations.

Already she had flung her gauntlet at the cowardly Politburo.

What amazing courage this woman has!

VIVA SARAH!

gardunne63 July 17, 2009 5:40 PM

Fred Smith (CEO) is a straight up kind of guy. Fed Ex is in for the fight of its life against UPS and the unions' (and Obami's) push for the card-check legislation. Fed Ex has the big red bull's eye on its back.

However, Fred Smith doesn't have to pay off some political whore to fight his battles for him. It's not like the ACU has tens of thousands of little Acorn's who don't work for a living and can go out canvassing and bullying daily on the streets for a cause.

Support Fed Ex. It's the anti-collective thing to do.

It doesn't surprise me that Mitt hangs around with guys like this ACU jerk.

Rick A. Evans July 17, 2009 8:39 PM

Holy crap. I'm dumbfounded. We are all adults here. Our eyes are open. We know the world is a disgusting place. But can we believe anything? Is everything a lie? Our soldiers are suffering horrible hardship for the ideals this country represents. Yet our leaders continue to be found to be thoroughly corrupt. This Keene business is more upsetting than 10 Huffpo's.

Huskers-For-Palin July 17, 2009 10:52 PM

Isn't this the same kind of thing that got the Washington Post in trouble a few weeks ago???

mojo July 18, 2009 12:33 AM

All I have to say is, I Think

A wise Mother of five from Ak.
will do better job at CPAC
Then a old white man from the
Beltway.
But don't take my word
ask Sonya.

Sarah rock
