CBS Hit Piece - Conroy and Walshe Join the Haters

Feeling left out, CBS News has joined the fray and published a shoddy hit piece on Governor Palin as well.

This lovely gem, authored by Scott Conroy and Shushannah Walshe, explores some so-called "exclusive" e-mails that follow a heated discussion between Governor Palin and the campaign's chief strategist, Steve Schmidt. If the names of the authors sound familiar to you, you shouldn't be surprised. The two of them are writing a book about Governor Palin. Some people had guessed that this upcoming book would be a fair piece, but, after reading this article, I'm not so sure. (As a side note, Shushannah Walshe started a Twitter account, just to plug the article she co-wrote.)

How did these exclusive e-mails come into the hands of Conroy and Walshe? It is anyone's guess, but later on in the article, we find that there was an exchange of e-mails between Governor Palin and Steve Schmidt that certain people were copied on. The first e-mail from the Governor was sent to Schmidt and copied to Todd Palin, Nicolle Wallace and Rick Davis. After a reply by Schmidt, the followup e-mail from the Governor added "her senior political adviser Tucker Eskew, senior aide Jason Recher, the lone traveling aide from her Alaska office Kris Perry, press secretary Tracey Schmitt and personal assistant Bexie Nobles." I'll let the readers of C4P speculate on who leaked the e-mails, but -- more importantly -- it begs the question of why there are internal communication of a national political campaign being leaked at all.

The story has been rehashed many times but focuses on the meme of Governor Palin and her husband's perceived association with the Alaska Independence Party (AIP). While one of the main planks of the AIP is to call for a vote of the citizens of Alaska on whether it should remain a state, become a commonwealth, or form its own country, it has been my experience that the party is largely one of pro-Alaska individuals who find the utmost importance in state rights and decry the federal government's involvement with the restrictions of public land use in Alaska. As much as been made of AIP as a secessionist party, there are probably many within the party that understand that secession isn't going to happen. As has been mentioned in the past on C4P, even Wally Hickel ran and won on the AIP ticket for governor in 1990 after a moderate republican by the name of Arliss Sturgulewski had won the Republican primary. (As a tangential note, episode 19 of the A&E show City Confidential covered Fairbanks, Alaska and the mysterious disappearance and murder of the founder of the AIP, Joe Vogler)

The story of Governor Palin having given a recorded welcome to their 2008 AIP convention and Todd Palin being registered a a member of the AIP, first got major recognition in an article in Salon.com. Like many stories now days, after appearing on a internet site the story got picked up by the mainstream media, CNN in this case. From there the Governor started seeing evidence on the campaign trail that people and reporters were talking about it.

Ginning up the article, Conroy and Walshe add this commentary to their story:

The comment set her off. She worried that the campaign was not sufficiently mitigating the issue of her alleged connection to the party, which despite a platform that harkens more to the Civil War than the 21st century, continued to play a serious role in Alaska politics.

Are they suggesting that the belief in states rights is an antiquated idea that died almost 150 years ago? Hundreds of thousands of people that attended the Tea Party rallies might beg to differ. Oh no, let's use the words "Civil War". That will certainly bring up a whole host of bad connotations.

Conroy and Walshe then write that the governor was prone to overreacting.

Her reference to a single protestor's sign and "many shout-outs" was indicative of Palin's occasional tendency to take anecdotal evidence of a minor problem and extrapolate it into something far more menacing.

Concerned that AIP story was getting legs, she sent an e-mail to Steve Schmidt.

"Pls get in front of that ridiculous issue that's cropped up all day today - two reporters, a protestor's sign, and many shout-outs all claiming Todd's involvement in an anti-American political party," Palin wrote. "It's bull, and I don't want to have to keep reacting to it ... Pls have statement given on this so it's put to bed."

Steve Schmidt blew the Governor's concern off, responding:

"Ignore it," he wrote. "He was a member of the aip? My understanding is yes. That is part of their platform. Do not engage the protestors. If a reporter asks say it is ridiculous. Todd loves america."

Governor Palin and Steve Schmidt continued their exchange:

"That's not part of their platform and he was only a 'member' bc independent alaskans too often check that 'Alaska Independent' box on voter registrations thinking it just means non partisan," Palin wrote. "He caught his error when changing our address and checked the right box. I still want it fixed."

"Secession," [Steve Schmidt] wrote. "It is their entire reason for existence. A cursory examination of the website shows that the party exists for the purpose of seceding from the union. That is the stated goal on the front page of the web site. Our records indicate that todd was a member for seven years. If this is incorrect then we need to understand the discrepancy. The statement you are suggesting be released would be innaccurate. The innaccuracy would bring greater media attention to this matter and be a distraction. According to your staff there have been no media inquiries into this and you received no questions about it during your interviews. If you are asked about it you should smile and say many alaskans who love their country join the party because it speeks to a tradition of political independence. Todd loves his country

We will not put out a statement and inflame this and create a situation where john has to adress this."

Ah, so the Governor is lying and she evidently doesn't know anything about campaigns. That's funny coming from someone who doesn't have all that great of a resume according to Wikipedia:
  • 1995 - Schmidt managed Will T. Scott's unsuccessful campaign for attorney general of Kentucky.
  • 1998 - Schmidt managed Tim Leslie's unsuccessful campaign for lieutenant governor of California.
  • 1998 - Schmidt was the communications director for the unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign of Matt Fong.
  • 1999 - Schmidt was the communications director for Lamar Alexander's unsuccessful presidential run.
  • 2004 - Schmidt was a member of the senior strategic planning group that ran President George W. Bush's successful re-election campaign
  • 2006 - Schmidt managed the successful re-election campaign for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
  • 2008 - Schmidt headed up the day to day operations for Senator John McCain's unsuccessful bid for U.S. President.
I might also note that the AIP is still a talking point against the governor today. So, job well done, Steve.

Update by JR: I would like to point out this line by Governor Palin:

"Pls get in front of that ridiculous issue...

It seemed to me, as an observer of the campaign, that Steve Schmidt and some on his team never tried to get in front of any "ridiculous issue." This all goes back to the campaign strategy that Governor Palin should not conduct interviews after she was selected as running-mate. She was not allowed to do interviews, therefore the dems and their allies in the media were allowed to run up to Alaska and find any and all information (lies) that they then used to smear the governor. The information was put out there, and Palin was never allowed to defend herself. When she was finally allowed to conduct interviews, the networks had all the power to edit and chop up Governor Palin's answers and facial expressions in order to put her in the worst possible light. As any Palin supporter knows, these ridiculous issues are STILL used against Palin in the media.

Here is a blast from the past in which Michelle Malkin reveals the internet campaign waged against Palin -- concerning the AIP -- by democrat operatives on the internet:

First, read this. Read the whole thing. Rusty Shackleford — with help from Jane of Armies of Liberation, Stable Hand, the Jawa team, Dan Riehl, Ace of Spades, and Patterico – traced a Palin-bashing YouTube video to a Democrat public relations firm, Winner and Associates, and one of its employees, Ethan S. Winner. They believe the voiceover for the ad — which spreads the lie that Sarah Palin belonged to a fringe third party, the Alaska Independence Party — was done by a professional whose voice they believe was also featured in several Obama ads and other spots produced by Obama top strategist and astroturfer extraordinaire David Axelrod’s firm.

Update II by JR: Check out this great journalism:

Palin was attempting to bend the facts ever so slightly to fit neatly into her version of events.

I can't wait for the book! Not.

Not much here to think about other than it may lead us to the leaker. If anything, it shows that Palin wanted to fight. Remember when we thought that the campaign was not defending her? She was the only Republican who acted like winning was the goal in 2008.

The AIP story was, like the rest, a very weak criticism of Governor Palin. She's a Republican whose son is defending this country. Voters never had time to fret over whether Todd Palin ever secretly thought AK should succeed from the Union if it was ever put up for a vote.

Curious that CBS is rehashing it with boring emails from the strategist of a failed campaign. If I ran CBS, I'd try to find news people would want to watch. Duh.

Prediction: the book flops. A lot of authors who get their hands on private correspondence can't resist the compulsion to use it at length. It's boring.

They put so much energy into trying to discredit Sarah. It speaks volumes about her strength and appeal and volumes about their own characters.

I loved what Glen Beck said about how they are inoculating her with their lies and slander. They keep throwing muck and strangely they keep getting really dirty.

That guy with Zeigler was pathetic. Keep up the great work! (And thanks for the nice welcome.)

Bill in Baltimore July 2, 2009 6:34 AM

I am so mad I am about to blow a gasket. Righteous mad though.

This pr*** was sabotaging her, belittling her, etc. right IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAMPAIGN.

Cowards, they are all cowards. SP has a right to be mad about this.

Again, I will ask:
- How does a person react when they realize they've been lied to ? Not some little white lie, but a mean-spirited one ?
- How does a person react whey then realize they've been lied to, in a mean-spirited way, CONSISTENTLY AND OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME

Answer: it ain't pretty, but the nation is about to find out in regards to the lies about SP.

One more observation: it sure seems like angry white men like the e-mail actors(who are technically probably a Catholic or a Protestant) (much in the same manner that TP was in the AIP) are now the PURVEYORS OF TRUTH, NEVER TO BE QUESTIONED.

They are running sh**less.

The animated response and beady eyes of Mike Allen (on Joe Scarboro (sp)'s show was pathetic if not hilarious in his glee to have SP go back to AK and "study up" (Another angry white mail, bald too).

The Norman Rockwell picture HAS to be the theme poster. It states EXACTLY what is happening, and we now see FIRST HAND her biggest enemies are in the R party !!!!!

Oh man, I went to bed around 10:30 last night and C4P posted like 4 articles ! It's going to be a rough and stimulating day !

C4P, awesome !

Bill in Baltimore July 2, 2009 6:43 AM

Normal people don't understand what is going on in politics. Just following SP is really, really hard, there is so much information.

But EVERYONE understands the Normal Rockwell painting of the Jury Room.

This has to be the theme photo of C4P, or prominently displayed.

All you need to say is "This is exactly what's happening to SP", and the normal person will understand. Then they will see things in a different light, and again, you'll see what happens when a person finds out they've been lied to in a mean-spirited way CONSISTENTLY and over a LONG PERIOD OF TIME.

Just ask Lisa Graas' mom (I think that's the right poster).

Man I wish I didn't have to work today.

Sarah Palin at Right to life dinner in Indiana:

"...quite relevant stuffs, but some of this things were neglected during the campaign, but now I have the opportunity to inform you and I ALSO HAVE GOT THE MIC..."

(not in exact word)

So to all Mccain people, particularly to that one called Schmidt we already know you guys were all jackass, please stop make a greater fool of yourselves.

LAW July 2, 2009 7:05 AM

Who gives a flying fig about the AIP. More power to 'em since we're all fighting D.C. over state's rights. Heck, my state, Washington tried to seceed back in the 1930's. Just a few years ago, Canada's Maritime Provinces wanted to secceed to the U.S. because of being screwed over by Quebec on energy.

Oh! energy independence; where have I heard that theme?

All this shows is the sliminess of the McCain Campaign in league with the sliminess of the *cough*intelligentsia*cough* media.

Liberals (the media) will do anything NOT to talk about or cover the disaster Ƙbama is.

Michael Jackson has had 93% of the media coverage for the past week because they bet the farm on Ƙbama but he has turned to be an embarrassment.

They either need a vacation from the Ƙbama mess or they want to distract all of us

narciso July 2, 2009 7:37 AM

I was looking through Schmidt's bio, and besides that slow start,
which compared to Governor Palin's career was not that impressive, 1992, city council, 1996, and 1999, mayor, 2002, one failed lt. gov. campaign;(sound familiar)than the oil commission, which she quit on principle;something else jumped out at me he didn't graduate from college.Considering the derision focused upon her, for having attended various state schools, that seems awfully 'ironic' as Alanis Morrissette would say.

Nicky July 2, 2009 7:39 AM

Max D: I will pick the latter, it is to distract.

But on a bright side though, most of the main stream media are beginning to take a second look at Obama.

bitterclinger July 2, 2009 7:45 AM

Who was working for whom here?

I'm betting Sarah got a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach seeing the blatant disrepect Schmidt had for her request at this point in the campaign.

Also, I don't know how Ziegler kept from saying "fat chance" or outright laughter to Mike Allen's constant refrain of "There are many people who worked on the campaign who would like to work with Gov. Palin again."

Yeah, right. I'd want that crew on my side.

Then MSM is trying to drive a wedge between Governor Palin and the Republican party to gen up a story.

They did they same thing with McCain
in the 200 election and dubbed him a maverick.

If Governor Palin decides to go full metal jacket "maverick" against the party,
and I hope she does the media will flock to her to keep the story going.

She has the luxury of sitting back, observing, and collecting information and wait to strike when it's to her advantage.

I tried to tweet the above link to one of the authors of the piece. It's from an Alaskan, written in September 2008, describing the problem with the "independence party" option on the registration form.

Amanda K July 2, 2009 7:59 AM

How do I say this politely? Well, I can't so let me say this instead:

Steve, NEVER. AGAIN. YOU. ARE. DONE. We're on to you. Ahhh BU-BYE. Get to steppin'. Syronara, "my friend".

Be wary Wallace, Davis, Eskew, etc. because we're on to you, too. We're watching.

This is a heads-up to all inner-circle elitist DC-types who participate in the politics of personal destruction: WE. ARE. LIVID. You haven't begun to see us fight yet. We will find out who you are and reveal it for all to see. We will show just cause for you not to be hired again. Consider this your fair warning.

Illinois Conservative (Whitney) July 2, 2009 8:17 AM

Something seriously must be going on with all of the rehashed garbage that the MSM has been "reporting" the past few days. I don't know if it is the home run tour of the the Lower 48 along with the successes of AGIA and the Letterman take down, if it is some inside knowledge of the successes of SarahPAC to be reported later this month,if the MSM is trying to distract viewers/readers from the messes of the Obama administration or if it is something else?

It is sickening and ridiculous! People seriously must be scared of the goddess of energy (someone called the Governor that in an earlier post, and it's a perfect name for her), if they are seeking every possible way to discredit her! It makes absolutely no sense to think that someone is unqualified to hold the presidency, yet they seek every possible way to destroy her!! It makes me so stinkin' frustrated!

Bill in Baltimore July 2, 2009 8:43 AM

Hey, Dead.

glad you're still here. Top o' the morning to you !

Go report back, now. Keep laughing.

Because we are coming strong. And we have you to be partly thankful for !

How's the weather today in AK ?

Ted July 2, 2009 8:48 AM

All I can say is WOW!!!

Having been there at the time in the thick of it on Palinforvp.blogspot.com and elsewhere, we Palinistas all, and I mean ALL, wondered, HOW CAN THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN BE BLOWING IT WITH PALIN?!? WHY DON'T THEY JUST LET SARAH BE SARAH, THE SARAH WE ALL KNEW?!?

Well, we now have the answer.

S A B O T A G E by McCain Campagn Chief Schmidt!!!!!

(thank you Mr. Schmidt, you may have been responsible for giving this nation Barak Obama as Pres)

And, BTW, now we know the who and why behind Palin GIVING PRE-TAPED INTERVIEWS TO GIBSON AND COURIC, (NOT LIVE which is a MUST), BUT ALLOWING FOR THE EDITING AND ATEMPT TO MAKE PALIN LOOK DUMB!!!

s c h m i d t !!!!!!!!!

(and we know Romney people were and are connected to this)

Lipstick July 2, 2009 8:53 AM

Sarah obviously is doing a great job governing AK, otherwise the MSM would be able to write a hit piece on her about something that is happening NOW or hey, how about even THIS YEAR.

This is old crap. No one cares about it because since Obama is doing a terrible job so many people have lost their job. All the MSM can do to try and make Sarah look bad is to dig up old crap no one cares about? Gee, she MUST be doing a bang up job or I am sure some MSM liberal crack reporter could come up with a great hit piece detailing something bad or embarrassing or incompetent that she is doing NOW.

I was raised in the country, and you know what? After crap is old and dried up it doesn't stink anymore.

This is old crap....no one cared THEN and no one cares NOW.

Sarah is doing a heck of a job as governor. She is clean people, freaking CLEAN. You can't find ANYTHING on this woman because she is CLEAN. This gets so tiresome.

Bill in Baltimore July 2, 2009 8:53 AM

Fox and Friends had Bill Kristol on to talk about the Vanity Fair piece and what he said about Schmidt, and he's not backing down an inch.
Please guys, get the video and post it as soon as you can.
This keeps on developing by the hour.

Read the post at the WaPo blog too, relevant people reaching out to defend the Gov on the record by name.

The e-mails at CBS.com confirm it for me, it was him for sure. That was his e-mail internal communication with a principal client, and now it's on CBS.com?

Who the hell am I supposed to think leaked this?

His angry, insulting retort to Kristol's blog post at the Weekly Standard sounded like a deflection to me, and now I'm convinced with this e-mail leak.

What a piece of steaming Schmidt.

Bill in Baltimore July 2, 2009 9:01 AM

dead,

it's beautiful here too. Grass is green, and already we're into July ! Temps are really mild here in Baltimore, usually the grass is brown by now.

Even before I knew SP was alive, I had wanted to take a cruise in Ak. Now I REALLY want to go.

But if I don't head off to work, that trip will never happen, ha ha.

Nicky July 2, 2009 9:03 AM

DDJ: It makes no sense that you keep trying to remind us that you are still alive. There is something in a persons name and yours is just a perfect one. (It doesn't matter if DDJ is a blog name, TO us at C4P, you name is and will always be Jailed, Disgraced and Jailed)

Brian72 July 2, 2009 9:05 AM

This from the WaPo blog post:

"After enduring months of derision within Republican circles for her role as the party's 2008 vice presidential nominee and her uneven performance as a national figure this year, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is experiencing something of a rebound among the D.C. chattering class in the 48 hours since the release of a very tough profile on her in Vanity Fair magazine.

In the wake of that piece -- a 9,800 word opus penned by Todd Purdum -- a number of operatives who worked closely with Palin during the 2008 campaign have reached out to the Fix to defend the governor."

By name. Not anonymous sources, and they reached out to the WaPo.

Brian72 July 2, 2009 9:07 AM

"She's a fine person, with unique and unteachable political skills," said Mark Salter, a senior adviser to Sen. John McCain's (Ariz.) presidential bid who was deeply involved with the Palin pick. "I'm sure she has a future if she wants one."

""Sarah Palin will be a leader in this party," said Steele during an appearance Wednesday on "Morning Joe." "She has the ability to galvanize the base, and even folks outside the base. "And I think all the hindsight second guessing and back looking does nothing.""

"Jason Recher, who served as a senior adviser to Palin and her trip director for the general election and has remained supportive of the Alaska governor, told the Fix that he spent two and a half months traveling with Palin and "grew to like and respect her even more as did many of the folks on the plane." Reche added that the people attacking Palin should "stand up and prove them on the record or move on with their lives like Sarah Palin has.""

Interesting. They are feeling the heat in the Beltway.
A party without voters ain't much good to them is it?

Brian72 July 2, 2009 9:10 AM

"Fred Malek, who served as a national finance committee chair for McCain's presidential bid, said that he recently hosted a foreign policy lunch at Palin's request in which she mixed with the likes of former secretary of defense Frank Carlucci and former deputy secretary of state Strobe Talbott.

"She has been vastly underestimated as a result of one or two interviews," said Malek of Palin. "I have spent a lot of time around her and can state unequivocally she is smart, perceptive, curious, and absolutely on top of issues like energy which are pivotal to her role as Alaska's Governor. ""

There is Malek again, and the nugget about defense policy meetings I had not heard before.

Interesting again.

Ted July 2, 2009 9:12 AM

Bill in Baltimore:--

Funny that you bring up the fake "ted", and thanks for the heads up -- I say funny because back on Palinforvp.blogspot.com other fake "teds" sprouted up to undermine the original ted so at the time I re-monikered myself "The Original Ted".

Brian72 July 2, 2009 9:12 AM

The traitors are finally getting smoked out of the brush.

They will regret this dishonorable, underhanded smear campaign.

If any of the potential 2012 GOP candidates had anything to do with this, they will be toast, forever.

Sapwolf July 2, 2009 9:24 AM

I would stronly suggest that everyone here at C4P examine the platform of the Alaska Independent Party.

The platform is a pretty much straight up emphasis on following the Constitutions of Alaska and the USA. It is a libertarian party. I happen to agree with almost everything in their platform. It is pretty much a libertarian/conservative platform along the lines of the Founding Fathers.

What could possibly be in this? Even 3. says "To advocate the convening of a State Constitutional Convention at the constituionally designated 10 year interval."

Sarah has a legitimate concern that Todd being registered via accidentally checking the box (this is not uncommon) could come back to haunt them if the MSM is allowed to run with it. She wants to correct the record.

There is nowhere in this platform that says that the AIP is FOR seceding from the union. 3. states that or implies the people of Alaska have that right possibly if a convention could be used to vote to become a commonwealth or secede. But, it doesn't say that.

Sarah and Steve had a difference of opinion on how to handle this issue. Sarah felt that the record needed to be corrected and that the AIP is NOT for seceding, which it appears they are not as things sit now. Todd accidentally checked AIP instead of writing in Independent, and corrected the mistake upon an address change. Schmidt tried to downplay this by telling her to in effect lie about it or ignore it. Sorry, but Sarah doesn't do that. She did not want lies about this issue to tarnish her and Todd and Alaska and the campaign, and ignoring it would only fuel the fire and give the impression that they were dodging the issue or implying they had something to hide.

And we all know that Sarah is honest relative to other politicians, and she doesn't believe in that kind of politics.

Schmidt and McCain's team really had no idea what they were dealing with because they were used to doing things the political way instead of in an open honest way.

Sarah wanted to set the record straight and Schmidt wanted to sweep it out of sight, despite Sarah warning them that their opponents were already starting the meme.

The national GOP is now only starting to understand what the Alaska GOP is dealing with when working with Sarah. Her way is an open way of appealing directly to the people, and the old Schmidt way is play the game so to speak.

If she runs for POTUS in 2012, her team and campaign will be so different.

She will be a libertarian/conservative grassroots candidate who works more around DC.

This scares the hell out of the Schmidt crowd because these people are not libertarian or conservative and wish to campaign the old way and make the process go through DC and the MSM.

Yogi41 July 2, 2009 9:31 AM

Schmidt should have thought this through more carefully; this seems like a desperate act of CYA, but he forgot one thing.

If he thinks he's the only one that can "leak" emails, think again. I'm certain others and even Gov. Palin kept their emails that they sent and received, and those emails could suddenly find themselves accidentally leaked, emails that could show Schmidt looking dimwitted and foolish.

TangledThorns July 2, 2009 9:34 AM

What needs to be done is to get whoever is spreading this crap on the record. This is so friggin' juvenile. Maybe someone can pose as a journalist just to make these guys spill their guts?

alwaysfiredup July 2, 2009 9:38 AM

From the WaPo piece:

"Although Palin will almost certainly run for president as an outsider to Washington (if she runs at all), she will need advocates inside the Beltway to help her raise money and keep a lid on the background sniping that is part and parcel of any presidential bid.

Palin may -- finally -- be understanding that reality."

Wow. Self-important much, Mr. Cillizza? No one can win unless they have the support of people inside the beltway? That's patently ridiculous. Beltway folks like their cushy jobs and will follow a winner. They need her far more than she needs them. Let her campaign for other candidates in 2009 and 2010 and we'll see how much Beltway support she really needs.

Sapwolf July 2, 2009 9:41 AM

Sarah will need LOYAL people who are in fact CONSERVATIVE.

Schmidt, the Wallaces, McCain? These people do not overlap in their political/economic/policy/beliefs with Sarah.

She needs loyal, conservative followers, not people who have no scruples and are 100% tactics and not believing.

Most people on Obama's campaign REALLY believed in Hope and Change. They are committed leftists and statists.

Brian72 July 2, 2009 9:42 AM

As far as I'm concerned, that CBS story IS that piece of Schmidt on the record.
Where the hell else did that e-mail find it's way to CBS from?
It was only a couple of others, maybe that Tucker guy.

I don't trust any dude named Tucker. That's just a rule of mine:)

Brian72 July 2, 2009 9:47 AM

Another thing, that Sussane Wolshe or whatever was with FOX at the time of the campaign.
I remember Greta pumping her as the insider for On The Record because she was the FOX reporter on the plane with the Governor.
She jumped right in with the insiders and Campaign Carl towards the end of the whole deal.
I never liked or trusted her at all.
She left Fox shortly after the campaign, now shows up at CBS, with this "exclusive".

Somebody gave her that stuff way back, and she's been sitting on it for a while, I would guess.

Her book on Palin will be the Vanity Fair piece in hardback.
I guarantee it.

Nancy July 2, 2009 9:57 AM

schmidt, huh, I didn't realize there was a new way to spell sh**.

What opposing candidates will say, if Governor Palin runs for president in 2012. Oh, schmidt!

This article about Governor Palin, What a piece of schmidt!

Governor Palin is an idiot, Bullschmidt!

This Steve Schmidt sure is in a pile of schmidt! (can you use schmidt twice in one sentence?)

Excellent.

Now I can actually say schmidt, and I won't feel bad.

Brian72 July 2, 2009 10:04 AM

That is what I was getting at Nancy, there is a way now to say the stinky word without getting in trouble!

It's the newest synonym in the lexicon!

wjshipley July 2, 2009 10:20 AM

Well, I disagree with a number of things in the CBS article, of course, starting with the title. This was not infighting, which would be staff members fighting, this was insubordination.

The Vice Presidential candidate saw a potential problem and directed staff to deal with it promptly. She was right in identifying it as an issue that would come back since it's with us continually.

Schmidt was wrong in dismissing it. It was extremely arrogant for him to correct the Governor of Alaska on the nature of a major Alaskan party because he took a look at the web page. Note he didn't see where she referenced the platform which supports her contention.

Brian72,
Thanks for the heads up about your 8:59 post. That joke is all yours! I guess I didn't catch your phrase at the end. Sorry if I stepped on your toes. I guess I was just reading through everyone's posts and kept thinking how what he did and is doing to Governor Palin, fit his name.
Sorry!

Brian72 July 2, 2009 10:31 AM

No need to apologize Nancy.

Just spread the "word", like fertilizer in the garden!
Haha!

jimr3 July 2, 2009 10:36 AM

wjshipley,

Excellent points!

Sheya July 2, 2009 10:42 AM

Sdcmidt, Wallace, Davis and all those backstabbers either secretly support Sarah and are releasing all this stuff now to get all this out early enough so in 3 years it will all be “More of the same” or they are just total whack jobs.
If I Would be Romney or Jindal or any other presidential hopeful why would I even consider hiring those guys if they can do that to Palin what says they won’t do it to me or my VP pick.
As many here have citied those guys are finished and I don’t think they will ever work on a campaign again. They are simple full of hatred nut cases who simply cannot be trusted.

AmeriCuda July 2, 2009 10:46 AM

Brian72/Nancy
Maybe we call kill two birds with one stone and change it's spelling to 'ShMitt' as in "That smarmy piece of ShMitt, Kevin Madden."
I also agree with your 'Tucker' sentiment. Just when the movie 'Tucker' had built up some sympathy for the name, Tucker Carlson comes along ...followed by the unbearably pretentious Tucker Eskew. After those two, I'm afraid I'm all Tucker'd out. -Oooh, that was bad.

Nancy July 2, 2009 10:50 AM

Brian72,
LOL! Thanks! "spread the 'word' like fertilizer in the garden!" Awesome liine.:)
I think it would be a great way for C4Pers to call things like they are, utilizing this newfound spelling of the word.

TommyReport July 2, 2009 11:03 AM

Guys,

I'll disagree with this one. I would let this story die a quick death.

She should not be in the position of having to defend a controversial group like AIP.

Lipstick July 2, 2009 11:08 AM

This is great it is happening now. All these "big" campaign people are looking worse than middle school kids. Sarah is looking very above it all. Also, notice that none of these leaks are tied to Sarah in anyway, they are McCain's hand picked people.

All this makes Sarah look good imo. She is seen as someone who saw a problem and wanted it dealt with, the "all knowing" aides screwed it up and now they are looking very untrustworthy with all these leaks.

Even more important is the fact that Sarah is learning from all of this. She had major leaks at SarahPac, by making it an AK thing they stopped. Now she sees how very careful she must be about who you trust.

The greatest political advisor in the world is worth nothing if you are worried that they will leak info about you, much less if they actually do. How betraying that is.

Sarah knows she needs people who have PROVEN their loyalty to her in the past. People who know things about her that are still not known, people who have a repretation for being loyal and who can have people she trust recommend to her that they are loyal.

If Sarah runs for POTUS there will be reporters trying to get any dirt they can. Even to the point of the Obama camp trying to pay people for leaks.

Sarah needs a very tight circle. An AK circle. I think this new AG is a prime example of AK people she can have on board who are trustworthy and very sharp.

She needs to bring anyone who does not have an AK connection on board quickly, so they can begin to prove they can keep their mouth shut, that their spouse can keep their mouth shut. Sarah needs to be bitchy about this.

They also need to prove that they understand she is the boss.

"Don't tell me you are loyal, SHOW me you are loyal."

Lipstick July 2, 2009 11:11 AM

TommyReport:

Agree! Sarah needs to say nothing about this. Just sit back and enjoy the show. They look so incompetent.

She simply needs to file away this loyalty lesson to use in her POTUS campaign....and go for a run.

Brian72 July 2, 2009 11:20 AM

Tommy, I agree, Sarah doesn't need to address this at all.

Other McCain people who worked with her are reaching out and going on the record to fight the smears on her behalf, and their own self interest.

Besides, she has a book to write herself:)

alwaysfiredup July 2, 2009 11:28 AM

How different do you suppose the '08 cmpaign would have been if C4P had been around to do the McCain Campaign's job for them? :)

Debtstar July 2, 2009 11:39 AM

C4P , your doing a great work.

Think how things would be if "journalists" did the same.

Palin was attempting to bend the facts ever so slightly to fit neatly into her version of events.

This line is also in the Vanity Fair hit piece. Great journalism!

spam4u July 2, 2009 1:46 PM

Um, I like Palin and all, but if the emails are correct, she WAS lying. Your "analysis" of the AIP email exchange was simply an ad hominem attack on Schmidt, rather than an explanation as to why she wasn't lying.

Blind loyalty has fogged your reasoning abilities. Grow up.

alwaysfiredup July 2, 2009 1:54 PM

Please, with your superior reaosning skills, point out the lie. I, with my fogged reasoning cannot see it.

Geedubya July 2, 2009 2:06 PM

I wrote somewhere else that I thought Sarah should respond to the VF piece, using her power to move eyes TO her response. And based on the fact that if you sit back and let others define you, that is exactly what they'll do.

But I think I've kinda changed my mind on that ..... this is really being exposed (by C4P, John Ziegler and some good guys on her campaign) to be nothing more than a bunch of female bashing by junior high minds, and to respond would be joining them in a regression back to those awful days when we were writing notes back and forth during class which were anything but accurate, and mostly based on how much you hated or liked someone else.

Besides, she's got a book to write. Address it there, if at all. Can't wait to see those sales numbers.

Isn't it fun to play campaign strategist on the Internet? Heck, she may not even run.

RE: alwaysfiredup and B. Davidson

If the Schmidt email chain is correct, how WASN'T she lying?! And, no -- the ad hominem attack on Schmidt doesn't make the facts not so.

Let me give you just a little help with understanding facts. Succession IS part of the AIP platform. Members advocate a range solutions, including "complete independence and nationhood status for Alaska." (see http://www.akip.org/faqs.html)

I apologize. Blind loyalty hasn't fogged your reasoning skills, it has completely erased them.

Sad indeed . . .

LadySam July 2, 2009 4:38 PM

Shushannah Walshe traveled with Sarah during the campaign and was the one giving Greta regular updates during the campaign. She would email Greta on a regular basis. Greta has continued to lean favorably toward Sarah. So maybe the book won't be totally trash talk.

Geedubya July 2, 2009 4:44 PM

It looks to me like Sarah was technically correct, unless that platform has been changed since to delete something about secession.

However, it's quite easy to find material associated with the party that makes it clear that the concept of secession is something near and dear to many. But of course you could say that about any number of positions from any number of parties -- some on the right believe passionately in a total ban on abortion, and prayer everyday in school. The current occupant and his plans for energy and healthcare are heartily endorsed by the Communist Party USA.

The other part -- was Todd's affiliation merely a clerical error, as Sarah claims and should know about, or was he a willing member? I'm not clear on the history of that, but Sarah doesn't seem to have much of a history of lying.

The false implication is that these informal emails would mirror the exact statement or position that would have been be presented. No, it would be discussed and refined to be completely accurate and bullet-proof. Sarah's point was that it should be addressed and put to bed BEFORE it potentially became a bigger issue. This is what Obama's team regularly did, and, unfortunately, they won.

These kinds of calls are not black and white. They're gut-calls. Somehow I trust Sarah's gut over ShMitt's any day of the week. That's basically all she had to get elected Governor, she didn't have a bunch of pointy-headed ShMittys telling her when to breath.

Sheya July 2, 2009 4:49 PM

Its not blind loyalty and she wasn’t lying this is what she said

" he was only a 'member' bc independent Alaskans too often check that 'Alaska Independent' box on voter registrations thinking it just means non partisan," Palin wrote. "He caught his error when changing our address and checked the right box. I still want it fixed."

If you would take a moment to research what the Alaska voter registration form looks like you will see it has four options for party affiliation: Alaska Democratic Party, Alaska Libertarian Party, Alaska Republican Party and Alaska Independence Party. Any independent could easily make the mistake and check the Alaska independent party.

Also if you in her first email she initiated she asks Schmidt to “get in front of that ridiculous issue”… Its bull…” Would it be true and presuming that all internal emails are Private Sarah could have simply ask him to spin it well to put it too bed.

alwaysfiredup July 2, 2009 5:03 PM

Nope. Still don't see the lie,UNLESS you assume that Schmidt was correct that the Secessionist thing was in their platform. But when we are capable of looking for ourselves at the actual platform (and not the FAQs, dearie, the PLATFORM), nope, it's not there.

The other part of the exchange cannot be characterized as a lie either. Sarah was upset b/c people said Todd was "involved" with AIP. Sarah says he never was "involved" and gave her explanation of how Todd came to have become a member of AIP WITHOUT becoming involved with AIP. I suppose it is possible she is lying, but the exchange offers no proof of such. Proof might come in the form of points such as "we have a sign-in sheet of AIP events and Todd's name is on it!" But the exchange offers no such thing that would suggest her statement to be false.

So no, I don't see the lie. You have to do better than that.

alwaysfiredup July 2, 2009 5:11 PM

How about this:

Sarah Palin: Ooh, that is a beautiful blue sky up there today, isn't it.

ShMitt: Shut up Sarah. The sky is yellow. Everyone here knows it's yellow. You're making us look bad. Don't make John have to respond to you being an idiot who doesn't know what color the sky is.

Sarah Palin: But ShMitt, you are wearing your sunglasses. Everyone else here is wearing the same sunglassses. They make the sky look yellow. If you would take them off, you'd see the sky is blue...

ShMitt: Don't you know it doesn't matter what you think, it matters what THEY think. If you can't get with the program we'll find someone who can.

Nancy July 2, 2009 6:02 PM

AmeriCuda,
As you can see you have taken the cake!:) alwaysfiredup used ShMitt very well already, and I used it in another thread just a few minutes ago.
I do not cuss, very often, so this new word fits the bill perfectly.
I love C4P because I get to laugh at great, funny stuff, like your gem! Thanks!
I hope oldnwise, saw your new spelling, a belly laugh for sure!

Thanks, AmeriCuda, for your wonderful compliment too!:)

oldnwise July 2, 2009 6:34 PM

Nancy,

A belly laugh?...BIG TIME!!

My computer connection Sucks, where 'Am. I've been trying to read all the articles and comments, to catch up...
I think I'm reading a novel... at times I think I'm reading a Trash Book! C4P is definitely a good beach read....
I will admit, my bill at Borders and Barns and Noble has gone down considerably, because of C4P! LOL

The Gov. scares the ShMitt out of the Left and the mush mouth Republicans!!!

AmeriCuda, Thanks for the laugh...

oldnwise,
Alot of my reading these days is coming in the form of C4P, too!
Knew you would love AmeriCuda's new spelling and I loved your line about it! LOL!

AmeriCuda July 2, 2009 8:53 PM

oldnwise,
'I think I'm reading a novel... at times I think I'm reading a Trash Book!'

How FUNNY. One of the reasons I love the C4P threads so much is because the posts have a high 'POP' quotient. A lot of clever quips, jabs and insights without the below-the-belt nastiness of most political blogs. It really is a high-quality bunch. Even our trolls don't hang around long once they realize we don't serve up the noodles of hate they thrive on.
Welcome aboard my friend!

Tami July 2, 2009 9:45 PM

While I understand the anger at Steve Schmidt, what everyone seems to be forgetting is McCain allowed Palin to be treated this way by HIS campaign. McCain is still going after Palin himself!

If he was a leader, if he has a single ounce of integrity in his body, if he was one bit conservative he would never have allowed his campaign staff to treat Palin the way she was.

McCain handed Obama the White House (along with help from ACORN and others) we can thank him for that.

They all need to sit down, shut-up and get our of Palin's way!

spam4u July 4, 2009 1:40 AM

Re: alwaysonfire

Nearly every question of the AIP FAQ deals with Alaskan independence from the U.S., i.e., succession. (Did you know that it might still be possible to have dual Alaskan / U.S. citizenship after succession?) "Succession from the U.S." is not explicitly stated in the platform section. I don't know what I was thinking!

Sure, succession is the intent of the party. Sure, their platform implicitly implies succession because a whole slew of the stated goals violate federal statute, not to mention the Constitution (despite paradoxically stating it wants to affirm the Constitution! Wow.). But, semantically speaking, "succession" is not stated!

And, Todd accidentally joined the party. Did Sarah accidentally give the introductory speech at a members meeting (in which Todd was in attendance)?

It takes a special kind of person to go through that kind of mental gymnastics just to fool themselves into thinking Palin wasn't lying. A simple, simple person . . .

spam4u July 4, 2009 1:57 AM

Taking a step back . . .

I always try and ask myself if I would treat the exact same situation in the same way if it were liberals rather than my own party. If not, I don't feel I'm being honest.

All I am trying to say is that if this situation were switched -- say it were Obama emailing Axelrod -- I don't think anyone here would be defending Obama.

I wouldn't be; and I'm not going to defend Sarah either simply because she's a conservative. That's all.
