Huffington Post Endorses Mitt Romney; UPDATE: Daily Kos Endorses Romney Too

It appears the left is now trying to evolve from quoting anonymous Washington elitists, and is instead now quoting anonymous members of the "grassroots".

In a piece titled "Grassroots Republicans Like Mitt Over Palin", HuffPo writer Jennifer Donahue lauds Mitt Romney:

In discussions with Republican men and women, something has replaced the head shaking of a few weeks ago. The have a reply now. And it has nothing to do with Sarah Palin saying if she runs she can beat Obama. It has nothing to do with her at all.

The word is this: Mitt. Tried and true in 2008, getting comfy like the baseball "mitt."

He's running a quiet campaign, the underground kind the national press is not supposed to notice, but reminding voters he is in the hunt.

This follows on the heels of Jonathan Martin's Mitt Romney puff piece that appeared in Politico the day before yesterday:

Mitt Romney says publicly he’s not considering another presidential campaign, most recently on Sunday during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” But many of his loyalists expect one and remain at the ready for 2012.

Romney is also apparently making a media blitz, appearing on weekend talkers a few days ago, giving other interviews, and making numerous appearances on Fox News.

To use an old quote, I question the timing. The wave of positive Romney coverage is suspiciously coincidental with a wave of attacks on Governor Palin by anonymous McCain aides and "GOP strategists".

There seem to be two groups of RINOs that are attacking Palin, with some overlap between the two: feckless and incompetent McCain staffers desperate to shift the blame from their failures in the 2008 campaign, and Romney supporters desperate to spoil any ambitions Palin may have for a 2012 run.

It's well-known that many of the 2008 Romney staff merged with the McCain campaign late in the game, and as a result were assigned to Governor Palin, who was also a late arrival and had no staff of her own. They are prime suspects for this type of behavior. And, anonymous sources aside, many of the named "GOP insiders" notorious for Palin-bashing trace back to Romney - people like Mike Murphy and Rob Gray.

I find the title of the HuffPo piece "Grassroots Republicans Like Mitt" hilarious. The only grassroots that the elites know about are found in the divots kicked up by their polo ponies.

UPDATE: For a startling comparison of Romney vs. Palin in dealing with regular folks, check out this March post by RAM.

UPDATE II: Daily Kos has also endorsed Romney.

Willard being pushed by the Left?

We got McCain as our candidate last time because of this VERY problem.

We let the media pick our candidate for us. Romney CANNOT beat Obama.

Ladies and Gentlemen, 2012 has officially begun.

Bill in Baltimore July 1, 2009 5:42 PM

Here's how Sarah can show her mettle and commence full scale campaigning at the appropriate time:

Rallies at stadiums with really big screens. I bet she would get 40,000 at Ravens Stadium in Baltimore to watch her on the screen. Or 15,000 at the Convention Center.

Whatever it is, the smart use of technology from an UNCONVENTIONAL and GRASSROOTS campaign will provide the momentum to carry her to the White House on Jan 20, 2013.

You don't need the Washington insiders to win an election. All you need is the most votes.

Oh, guess what? If she is running, states will continue to jump each other to be first. It will be ugly. But that won't faze her or her team.

Angela July 1, 2009 5:43 PM

2012 began a while ago. This is just par for the course.

Romney is gonna fail. Because if he wins, it's 4 more years of Obama.

alwaysfiredup July 1, 2009 5:45 PM

You could take that title two ways. Either Mitt is a common example of a grassroots Republican, or lots of Republicans enjoy Mitt. Both ideas are ludicrous, so take your pick.

TangledThorns July 1, 2009 5:51 PM

First, let's not attack Romney here. It'll be a hard search to find anyone who'd actually vote for Mitt in the first place. This article is only meant to restart political infighting within the GOP so let's not fall for that trap. I won't support Mitt for 2012 but I'm sure he'd and any other GOP candidate is a better choice than Obama!!

Of course HuffPo's endorsing Romney. If they have to choose a Republican, they're always going to go for the RINO's and moderates.

Let us enter this piece of evidence as Exhibit 'A' on why NOT to vote for Romney.

An endorsement from HuffPo is like the kiss of death from the Don.

Sapwolf July 1, 2009 6:20 PM

I now am convinced that Romneyites are timing this because they fear SarahPAC's numbers are gonna be over a million.

Also, Axelrod and the Left wish to face Romney because they know they can beat him. Their fear is of Palin.

They are desperately making moves to discourage Sarah from making her move in 2012, so they are trying to knock her out early.

Nicolle Wallace is a leftist based on her Berkeley credentials, her behavior in the campaign and links to Couric and NBC. An example of what we are up against.

This is NO coincidence. There is too much evidence that this is coordinated with the DC to NY belt crowd.

If Sarah goes to CPAC, I cannot promise that there will be no fistfights there. If she shows it will be Jets vs. Sharks.

What we could use is some hard evidence that the Romney camp has any links to any leftist sites, or other media people.

Sapwolf July 1, 2009 6:23 PM

Let's see if Mitt can distance himself from HuffPo.

Squirm Mitt, squirm.

SCSoxFan July 1, 2009 6:25 PM

This is part of what Chris Cilliza calls the "invisible primary." The target of this HuffPo article is not the GOP grassroots, or even the GOP elites, neither of which reads Huffington Post much. The target is political reporters. Huffington Post is the most widely read blog by MSM-types and often drives other stories by them. It's an attempt to counter the perception of Palin doing better after the Auburn trip and the Letterman thing.

AllahPundit over at Hot Air made an interesting comment today -- that 2012 looks like a showdown between the grassroots' passion for Palin and Romney's organization. His scenario has Palin taking Iowa, Romeny taking NH, and "all out war" here in SC and in FL (IMO, Palin would kill Romney here in SC). My thought, though, is that Romney had the organization and the "air of inevitability" in 2008. Look what it got him. To me, 2012 is looking like a replay of the 1980 GOP nomination fight. The grassroots (Reagan) versus the GOP elites (GHW Bush). May the same outcome happen again.

AmeriCuda July 1, 2009 6:26 PM

As if this woman's HuffPo piece weren't annoying enough, check out this clip from one of her eye-clawing appearances on HARDBALL. Further proof that she is a Mitt gal to the end.

techno July 1, 2009 6:33 PM

Why this is so JUICY is that Romney's supporters henceforth will have a much more difficult time to argue that Mitt is a TRUE CONSERVATIVE.

And that helps Sarah even more with the base.

gamsbo July 1, 2009 6:39 PM

What about last week straw poll in K/where Palin was 22 points a head of Mitt now I call grassroots ...You have wonder what the governor is doing as all this is going on..."let the boys fight with each other"

lonestar July 1, 2009 6:59 PM

Bill in Baltimore - It doesn't matter who gets the most votes anymore. It only matters who gets to count the votes.
Unless republicans decide to use guerilla warfare and outfight democrats, they will keep losing seats from local races to state races to federal gov't and the presidency.
Sadly, the only politician with the determination is being trashed daily while the party accepts it.

Yogi41 July 1, 2009 7:07 PM

Mitt was just on Special Report and the panel (Charles, Fred Barnes and that NPR lady) had good things to say about Romney in 2012. Charles and NPR lady were especially hard on Palin, not even considering her as a serious contender. Fred Barnes said no one is a serious contender this far out, but she can't be dismissed just because liberals and many of the Republican elite don't like her.

lonestar July 1, 2009 7:09 PM

Did Mitt Romney even win one primary in 2008?
Why it the media pretending this guy is someone republicans want? He is who the "elites" want to run and lose to BHO.

Yogi41 July 1, 2009 7:11 PM

Also, Romney didn't rule out a run in 2012. He said "I've always had the fire to run" and then he made a joke about seeing if he can generate enough heat to attract enough voters... or something like that.

He is holding up his health care plan in MA as superior to Obama's healthcare plan. I do hope he runs on this, so his plan can be scrutinized and people can see for themselves what a failure it has been to that state.

Yogi41 July 1, 2009 7:13 PM

lonestar,

Yes, he won Michigan, Nevada, Wyoming, Maine, MA, Montana, Utah, Minnesota, Colorado, North Dakota, and, ironically, Alaska.

Any news on Sarahpac and Defense fund amounts?

howIroll July 1, 2009 7:27 PM

On Special Report, Fred seemed to be a pretty big supporter of the Guv. He agreed she need advisers, but he said all she had to do was make the call "and there'd be plenty of people ready to head up to AK."

Illinois Conservative (Whitney) July 1, 2009 7:37 PM

Gov. Sarah will likely at least take all of the Western and Midwestern states that Romney won, no problem!:)

It must be remembered that Romney ran against McCain and Huckabee last time. 2012 is a whole new ballgame.

Patty Hewes July 1, 2009 7:38 PM

That's what frankly pisses me off sometimes.

Howlroll, why doesn't she accept help from the GOP? Does it have to do with the fact that she doesn't trust anyone?

juju July 1, 2009 7:39 PM

Fred also said "there is plenty of time". The other two said she needed to stay in AK. and study...duh

I am so sick of people saying that. Sarah has done nothing to put herself in the public eye. Everything she has done has been low key things. It is the media that has made her appearances high profile.

Maybe I didn't say what I meant in a clear manner. What I meant when she went to NY, Texas, she didn't issue a press release to draw the news to her. Also, when she went over seas she didn't take any press people.

Over all I think she has been trying to be low key. Not like Romeny who has been on TV every day this week.

bestbud July 1, 2009 8:08 PM

This sounds rather simple, the HUFFO POST wants an easy candidate to beat.

This is very easy to see...the liberals want to run against Mitt. Why? Mitt's easy to beat. Obama would win a landslide against Mittens.

bitterclinger July 1, 2009 8:25 PM

Actually, I was shocked at how Fred Barnes defended Sarah compared to the other two. Do they really think Romney or even Obama for that matter has tons of info in their enpty heads about foreign policy and econ?

Mitt ruined healthcare in Mass. A whopping 27% told Rasmussen they liked it. Everyone else said it stunk and was more expensive!

Look how great Bambi's been with foreign policy. What a genius.

The talking-head meme, esp. from Krauthammer this evening was, "Sarah needs to give real policy speeches and stop talking in platitudes."

Are these people really this dense?

jeaneeinabottle July 1, 2009 8:31 PM

So Huffington Post wants Mitt, jeez, he will loose for sure. These people are wigging out. Both sides are crazy. They are so scared of her it's funny. She better rip all of them a new one. I love that woman! Go Gov Palin!

Pamela Geller July 1, 2009 8:34 PM

This is clearly a coordinated effort to try to finish Palin off, ala 'the knight of the long knives' but it's more like a Keystone Cops movie. The knives they're wielding couldn't cut butter. It's actually a relief to know her enemies are spent and are shooting blanks three years out.

Hey Mittens.... with friends such as Daily KOS and Huffpost, who needs enemies !!!!

Lisa Graas July 1, 2009 10:28 PM

The article here lists two camps going after Palin. There is a third. I seem to recall a report (now I wish I could remember where and if I find it I'll share it) that some entrenched Republicans are trying to get Paul Ryan out there as a sort of "Palin substitute". D.C. Republicans don't like Palin. Check how many voted for TARP I and are concerned about the tea party movement. Check how many of them are big on earmarks. Bailout supporters and earmark lovers are threatened by Palin supporters and tea party types now. There is a concentrated effort to promote Paul Ryan as a Palin substitute. Not that they want Ryan to be President. Far from it. They just want Palin's adoring crowds to adore some other Republican. Remember when so many Palin supporters were upset by how she was denied even the slot to introduce Gingrich at the House-Senate fundraiser? Well, go check and see who was given that slot. My point is, there is that third camp. Keep an eye open. They're sneaky. One quote critical of Palin from an unnamed GOP legislator from a battleground Southern state (could it be my own state's Senator McConnell who is pushing HARD to root out his staunch conservative colleague Jim Bunning?) came out in a report on the dinner.......so it's not only biggger than those two camps attacking Palin. It's also bigger than Palin herself.....but she is now the reigning queen of conservatism so she is the biggest target of this particular camp. But in this battle (among all the battles going on) it's about the heart and soul of the Republican Party. Will it be a party that appeals to "moderates" or a party that can bring in the tea party crowd? That's the big question now. It's only going to get stickier, folks.

Lisa Graas July 1, 2009 10:31 PM

Let me clarify my last comment a bit. Of course, my information is a bit dated and it could be that they now see that Paul Ryan is not going over well like they'd hoped and so they are all piling into the Mitt camp now. That's a possibility.

Jenny July 1, 2009 10:34 PM

The liberals might make a coup and get Mittens votes in our primaries.
Hugh talked about the liberals devious plans to mess up our primaries yesterday.
Now that I see Mitt is buoyed by Daily Kooks and HuffPo, I see this may happen.
CLOSE THE PRIMARIES STEELE!!!!!

bitterclinger July 1, 2009 10:36 PM

Sarah should walk away with the primary nomination, but with open primaries and the dems having Zero in place, they'll be set to make mischief.

If Michael Steele doesn't start to do anything about closing primaries (and from what I've heard, it can take years to change state regs), the trolls are going to pick Romney for us.

The only way to get the country back will be for Sarah to run as an indie. No, that's not my choice, but that may be the only one we have.

NoMoRino's July 1, 2009 10:38 PM

I voted for Mitt (last resort over Gomer Pyle) back in April. I will not vote for him again......unless of course he is running against Davis Jr in 2012.

Mitt and his snipers are certainly trying to destroy her. I don't trust Mitt. The only reason that the D.C. G.O.P. would endorse him as a way to short-circuit Palin (whom they apparently can't control). Mitt is a Bain Capital blueshirt leader and he's a big time Globalist....and finally....I think he's a RINO!!!

I donated more money to SarahPac yesterday. The more they attack the more I will donate.

Keep it up Mitt. Betwixt you and Gomer we'll have 16 years of ObamaMania in store.

1-20-13, Morning in America...and it ain't gonna be a MITT Morning either. :-)

TEA PARTY ON SATURDAY!!!!

NoMoRino's July 1, 2009 10:47 PM

And one more thing...

....it is going to be a HUGE HUGE advantage in 2012 to be as far away as possible from D.C. and the elitists there. Advantage Palin (BIG TIME).

I just hope she runs. She will wipe the floor with that thug and his Chi-Town punks in the White House.

This in-fighting will reveal who these wannabes are.

As for Palin needing better advisors. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO DISGUSTED with ALL the politicians in D.C. I think every single one of them should be thrown out of office and start over!!!

If we don't watch out Davis Jr. is going to "remake" this country into a Soros Third World nation.

Just one more question....
Who is on the other end of that Blackberry call to BHO?

1-20-13, Barrys' Blackberry shutdown day!!!

TEA PARTY SATURDAY!!!!!

Nancy July 1, 2009 11:34 PM

From all the trolls and John Kerry, I got the impression the loonies were dying for Governor Palin to be the nominee in 2012. Now HuffPo endorses Romney! Call me crazy, but I think the trolls, and everyone who laughs at Governor Palin running against The One, might be lying?! Could it be those laughs are nervous giggles? If she is such a joke, such a loser shouldn't HuffPo endorse Governor Palin?
I'm so confused!

TexMex July 2, 2009 1:04 AM

This lefty media backing of Romney for the 2012 GOP nomination has me shaking my head. I'm not even going to try to pull any inferences from this.

Look, apparently the logic in the minds of the D.C. boys is this: McCain's problem was his age. He was too old for the young kids out there to rally behind. No, it wasn't the message! He was a moderate! So, let's run a younger version of Mccain: Romney! Yea! Same ideology, same bland personality. What could go wrong?

*sigh* Really, they think Obama and his machine can be dislodged with another milquetoast candidate? Obama would have to be failing all across the board with his constituencies for Romney to prevail and if that scenario pans out, hell, Hillary might run against him. No, at most Obama would be damaged among Indies and Romney, for all his economic acumen, doesn't have the "IT" factor to rally people to him. And don't get me started on the RomneyCare.

I was disheartened to hear Mara and Charles chat up Romney and express disappointment at Palin's lack of "studying up." Honestly, Romney has been playing the media like a harp, and it "looks" good. But Barnes is right in that 2012 is 3 years away and a lot can change. The sooner the Guv makes her decision re: re-election the better. She's still a damn strong contender in my eyes and I have no doubt that she can kick it into high gear should she choose to run. Damn, these choices must be agonizing for her!

TexMex July 2, 2009 1:09 AM

Damn I so wish I could've been on the McCain campaign I would've been the biggest Bitch on behalf of Gov. Palin! That email back and forth between Schmidt and Palin re: AIP has me pissed off! For cripes sake, Schmidt, all she was asking for was a simple press release to squash the AIP business. She wasn't asking for a press conference. ARGH! God, what a HORRIBLE campaign!

frisky July 2, 2009 1:38 AM

It's official! The MSM want Romney, because they know he will lose against Obama! They smear Palin because they know she can WIN! Why the rush to see who the GOP nominee is in 2012? Why aren't the liberal's just enjoying Obama?

Bill in Baltimore July 2, 2009 6:38 AM
