"I can't fight for what's right when I'm shackled to the governor's seat."

Matthew Continetti has a long article on Gov. Palin in the current issue of the Weekly Standard:

The fierce reaction [to her resignation] surprised Palin. She is acutely aware of what the media and her opponents say about her. She heard some people say that the timing of her speech was odd. Not so. "Independence Day is so significant to me--it's sort of a way for me to illustrate that I want freedom for Alaskans to progress, and for me personally," she told me during a telephone interview on July 9. Others said the motivation for her resignation was not clear. "I'm like, 'Holy Jeez, I spoke for 20 minutes' " giving reasons, she said. Bloggers conjectured that a horrible scandal was looming over her. Nope. Palin says she even heard a rumor that she resigned because pornographic pictures of her were about to hit the Internet. This left her bemused. "Between which pregnancies did I get to pose for those?" she said sarcastically. The obstinacy of her enemies, the fact that they consistently attribute bad-faith to her and accuse her of double-speaking, continues to mystify her. Hearing all the innuendo, Palin said to herself, "Really? You can't just believe what I'm saying?"

One thing you quickly learn about Sarah Palin when you study her career is that she never, ever does things by the book. The lady knows how to make a splash. She specializes in surprise announcements. Her 2004 resignation from the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, her 2005 declaration that she was challenging incumbent Frank Murkowski for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, her March 2008 revelation that she was seven months pregnant with her fifth child, then her August 2008 addition to the GOP presidential ticket and the subsequent shocker that her 17-year-old daughter was pregnant: All galvanized public opinion and upset established patterns of doing business.

Palin likes gambles. Her career is filled with firsts. In 2006, Palin became the first woman governor in Alaska history (as well as the youngest). In 2008, she became the first woman to appear on a GOP presidential ballot. And on July 3, she probably became the first governor with a 54-percent approval rating to resign from office for reasons having nothing to do with scandal or appointment to another job.

Palin says she had been thinking about her decision for a while, and had talked to various people about it. In January, during her state of the state address to the Alaska legislature, she asked lawmakers to put the previous year's election behind them. "I asked them not to allow those distractions that were on the periphery to hamper the state's progress," Palin told me. But her plea went unheeded. "It became obvious in the last months especially that too many people weren't going to ignore those things on the periphery," she said. As the months passed, Palin arrived at the conclusion that she didn't want a second term as Alaska's governor. She had achieved what she had set out to do, so why bother with one more lame-duck legislative session in 2010? "I know that we've accomplished more in our two years in office than most governors could hope to accomplish in two terms," Palin said. "And that's because I hired the right people." For Palin to remain shuttling between Juneau, Anchorage, and Wasilla would waste both her and her constituents' time. And "I cannot waste time," she said. "I cannot waste resources."

[...]

Why is Palin leaving? At this writing, there is no reason to doubt her stated position: Her enemies' concerted efforts to tear her down have caused her family financial stress and distracted her from her duties as governor. Since she returned to Alaska in November 2008, she has been hemmed in. Ethics complaints, insults, invective, undue attention, and legal bills have been all-consuming. "I can't fight for what's right when I'm shackled to the governor's seat," Palin said. For the last seven months the governor's office has been a ward. A trap. She is breaking free.

[...]

Speculation about Sarah Palin's presidential ambitions is premature. She herself probably does not know her next move. There is a strong chance that the unpredictable Palin may decide against running for any office, ever. You never know. But since the presidency so captivates Americans, and since the most recent vice presidential nominee has as much of a claim on the next presidential nomination as anyone, "Palin for President" (Tippecanoe and Piper too!) stories will be around for years to come.

Did Palin's surprise resignation help her chances? The flippant answer is, "Check back in four years, bub." The serious answer is, "There's no strong consensus one way or the other." When Palin announced her resignation, the conventional wisdom immediately gelled behind the position that she could no longer win the GOP presidential nomination in 2012. Maybe. Slowly and haltingly, however, an alternative theory emerged that said the move might not damage Palin as much as the establishment believed it would.

The polling evidence seems to confirm this. So far, Palin's fans have viewed her decision not to seek reelection sympathetically. A Gallup poll released on July 8 recorded that 67 percent of Republicans wanted Palin to have a role as a national political figure. A Rasmussen poll from last week found that Mitt Romney, Palin, and Mike Huckabee are in a statistical tie for the nomination.

Palin has a devoted following. No Republican politician energizes GOP crowds as much as she does. When I saw her speak at the Vanderburgh County Right to Life dinner in Evansville, Indiana, in April, Palin was practically mobbed by well-wishers and autograph seekers. The conservative movement is rudderless, and social conservatives in particular would like a powerful spokesman for their cause. The social issues may not have played much of a role during Palin's governorship, but once she is free from office she can emphasize them as much as she likes.

One lesson from Barack Obama's candidacy is that a politician should seize his (or her) moment. Elite opinion, remember, thought that Barack Obama wasn't ready to run for president in 2008. He should sit back, the argument went. Gain seasoning. Master a few issues. Wait for his turn. But Obama understood that when you do that, you end up being Joe Biden. Obama understood that once the spotlight is on you, it's foolish to let it pass on to someone else. He ignored the naysayers. He launched his campaign. Now he lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Reagan's late campaign manager John Sears had a term to describe what voters look for in a presidential candidate. The term was "appropriateness." Sears meant that John Q. Public wants to support the guy that best fits his mental picture of what a president should be. Does Palin have such "appropriateness"? The verdict is mixed. Certainly there's a latent hunger for a viable female presidential candidate who isn't Hillary Clinton. Palin, moreover, looked authentic and commanding in her speech to the 2008 Republican National Convention. It is not an exaggeration to say that her address there was one of the most effective political communications ever. In the vice presidential debate, Palin went toe-to-toe with Biden, the paradigmatic Beltway insider, and gave as good as--if not better than--she got.

Throughout her career, Palin has seemed most "appropriate" at moments when she senses that the populace is diverging from the political class that rules over it. Palin exploits the split and wins office as the tribune of the people. That is what happened when she saw that Wasillans were tired of the nonideological, nonpartisan, unexciting mayoralty of John Stein; when she saw self-dealing among Republican insiders in Anchorage and Juneau; when she saw that Alaskans were tired of Frank Murkowski and the lobbyist culture he nursed and protected. That is what she and John McCain tried to do last year, when Americans had grown tired of George W. Bush and Republican misrule (things didn't work out the way they'd hoped). The next time Palin sees a gap separating the people and their government, she may try to jump in and fill it.

For now, though, Palin will focus on writing her book, on the midterm elections, and on giving speeches. One certainty is that neither she nor the people who love and hate her are going away. "It's not retreat," Palin said. "It's moving more aggressively than ever to fight for what's right." Today the Palinistas and Palinphobes are as much a part of the national scene as they have been part of Alaska's. Since her debut, Palin has sparked curiosity and revulsion, devotion and illwill, admiration and scorn in equal measure. For whatever reason, the press cannot take its unblinking eye off of her. To the media and her detractors, she is a force of nature. She cannot be ignored.

The obsession is sure to intensify. Be prepared. Hurricane Sarah is about to descend on the Lower 48.

Read the whole thing. Regular C4P readers will recognize the narrative. Continetti summarizes her fights this year with a recalcitrant legislature that criticized and blocked her every move.

Continetti does make one glaring mistake. He writes that the Arctic Cat ethics complaint was about a T-shirt. The frivolous complaint was about an Arctic Cat jacket, not a T-shirt. The governor is a hardy Alaskan, but even she wouldn't be outdoors in February in Alaska wearing only a T-shirt.

Tell me about it.

The Governor shouldn't be reading or listening to all the crap that's said about her online and on talkradio. This stuff can turn the most sane of folks crazy...

I bet she will eventually understand this as she gets accustomed to her new role as a national figure.

AWESOME ARTICLE. It made me so sad reading the part about the "Insult list" that Sarah has with all of the awful things written about her. I don't know why she does that to herself, reading all that. I can understand being curious about what is being said about you, but if those things were being said about me I would want to crawl in a hole and die. Sarah is an amazing human being, I don't know she can stomach the crap said about her on a daily basis

Have you ever had a group put you done and you can still remember every name, incident etc.?

This is Sarah's way to get back. The list has gotten to long and now, so she may have to keep it. Maybe it is what fuels her?

Some people thrive on others anger as well as show the difference in attitude compared to complete anger. We have seen this with Sarah... Cheney is also a good example.

Think of it like that.

So who are you to say different?

baboonking July 10, 2009 3:49 AM

upinak,

i'm raising a legitimate cricisim of the guv. she needs to have the ability to ignore stupid insults if she wants to be a national figure because there's going to be thousands of them and she can't record and deal with each of them otherwise thats all she'll be doing.

look her most ardent supporters will like that fact that the guv fights back and puts all these idiots in their place but it doesn't play well people who don't follow policitics or the guv really close. they would rather she talk about issues or policies or moving forward rather than engaging with idiots.

Baboon, you are kidding right?

So Sarah NOT suing the loser liberals up here due to the "rumors" wouldn't be a good idea in your eyes?

How about stopping and thinking. She has had more smears then butter on a bagel... and she is getting spread thin due to the BS going on.

The list may be her realization of people who are just not worth the time and effort. the Live and let Live ideal of Alaska. She will probably leave them alone... but God willing she doesn't have to do anything for or with them.

Think of it like that. Alaskans have long memories.... we don't forgive easily. This place is too small to forget things. And as big as the lower 48 is... it will still have the same type of stupid down there.

"The file on my desktop labeled 'Insult List' is an attempt to track every foul thing that's been said about Sarah Palin since she rose to national prominence."

The author, Matthew Continetti, keeps the list, not Governor Palin.

baboonking July 10, 2009 4:01 AM

upinak,

the guv needs to pick her battles. if those rumors make it into the MSM then responding is fine and necessary.

if they are relegated to the loon blogosphere then ignore it or else you risk legitimizing them and giving them more attention (which is what they want).

TommyReport July 10, 2009 4:02 AM

From this point on, Baboon is right. She's off the "Alaska" stage so to speak and now back onto the national stage.

Leave it to C4P, which now has quite the platform if you look at the alexa USA rankings and the AP/US news links, to take care of the liberal blogosphere.

Penny July 10, 2009 4:03 AM

Guys, I just read the article again for clarification. The insult list on the desktop looks like it's on Matthew Continetti desktop, not Sarah's.

Palin-hatred is visceral and unrelenting. "Our state was inundated with opposition researchers trying to dig up dirt, the Democratic blogosphere up here making stuff up," Palin told me. The file on my desktop labeled "Insult List" is an attempt to track every foul thing that's been said about Sarah Palin since she rose to national prominence. At the moment, the list is seven single-spaced pages long. Palin's been called, among other things, a "bimbo," a "cancer," a "farce," a "jack in the box," a "provincial," a "maniac," an "airhead," "Lady Gaga," and "political slime." And that's just a small taste of the G-rated stuff. The blue material is far worse.

Whew! I feel better now.

baboonking July 10, 2009 4:04 AM

upinak,

i'll make it more clear. i thought letterman crossed the line so she could have ignored it or fought it (either way would be fine to me). she fought it and now all comedians will be more careful to tease her children in the future. win for the guv.

picking fights with CD is wrong in my opinion. she a annoyance more than anything and giving her more attention is what she wants. ignore her.

techno July 10, 2009 4:08 AM

OT

Levi Johnston being resurrected again. This time he claims that Sarah Palin's sole purpose of stepping down was materialistic: take the money and run.

In one of the greatest comebacks ever Meg Stapleton said, "It is interesting to learn Levi is working on a piece of fiction while honing his acting skills."

baboonking July 10, 2009 4:09 AM

one thing that is clear is that the guv needs time to grow.

maybe in alaska local and state politics she can listen to her detractors and supporters because well there aren't that many of them but on the national stage its magnified multiple times so she needs to change her attitude. this will take time and she needs to get some good people to advise her on this.

if she does grow then she will become formidable as a national figure if she doesn't she will become too consumed with the negative stuff and it will probably lead to her end.

If I were Bristol, this guy would have to crawl to Tripp over my dead body.

baboonking July 10, 2009 4:15 AM

its a hard thing to master. bill clinton was too consumed with the lewinski affair to do his job as president but hillary on the other hand had the other problem she would not read any criticisms of her so she would be in a bubble.

the guv needs to find a good balance. the best approach would be for her to let her people filter the media that she needs to focus on and leave the garbage aside.

and more than any other politician this will be crucial for the guv because she is hated by the MSM and will be attacked the most.

Uffda, That idiot needs to keep up with the news if he wants to successfully smear the Governor aka "nice lady".

The "idiot" cites a book deal as one of the main reasons why that greedy Governor aka "nice lady" wanted to leave state office.

The problem with this theory is that The Governor has already inked a book deal with HarperCollins and the state approved of it as well.

Great article by Continetti. Looks like TWS is still behind Palin almost 100%. I do agree with the notion that now that Palin is transcending local Alaska politics, she needs to find a way to get past the smears and let them roll off her back.

Reagan did that. He was rewarded for it by voters. Stay focused and on-message, and the best revenge will be victory.

McGruff July 10, 2009 8:31 AM

The author, Matthew Continetti, is keeping a list.

Firelight July 10, 2009 9:14 AM

Yes, I would like to see the guv start to let the personal stuff about her roll off her back. Take up arms if it is her kids or really outrageous but be the attack dog on policy. There is so much material to attack on Obama policy.

He is really going to have to spin plates. When 2012 rolls around for him jobs have to be plentiful, the economy has to be strongly upturning, energy has to be cheap and progressing and we will have to feel secure in our homeland.

I think that Soros can manipulate the market to look good but they can't make jobs out of thin air, keep taxes low, keep energy costs low and the country safe by manipulation. The media can try but it is Americans that sit at the kitchen table with their checkbooks.

I am trying to find the article/blurb where Levi showed up at some event and no one talked to him. The libs or cons.

CodaCuda2012 July 10, 2009 9:14 AM

I say Gov. Palin should fight. She needs to strike a balance. When a response is needed Meg should take the lead. You can not let crap hanging out there and not respond. We want a fighter and a fighter who knows how to fight. Gov. Palin handled Letterman perfectly. The small stuff is well just that small stuff and not worth the time. This is where the balance comes in.

I am surprised nobody mentioned this quote. I asked Palin about President Obama's response to the democratic upheaval in Iran. "Maybe they're tougher behind closed doors," she said. She noted that there were plenty of things "the most powerful man in the world" could do to help bring down Ahmadinejad, including a new round of international sanctions. She went after Obama's rhetoric. "It's not 'meddling' in another country's business when you understand that what happens over there affects us over here," she said. "I wish Obama was tougher in that area.

Gov. Palin's response is spot on.

Jenny July 10, 2009 9:19 AM

It's a great article.
Sarah ignored some of this garbage during the months after the election. However, it persisted without being addressed. She has to talk back. But now she needs a representative to do that.

She needs to not dwell on this crap. She is a better woman than that. The media is a bunch of ass clowns.

Continetti I believe is writing a book on Sarah. That should be interesting.

juju July 10, 2009 9:22 AM

I do think Palin (staff) should ignore Levi. I see no gain in that except drawing more attention to him which is not good.

Most people would think Levi's lawyer is a scum bag for putting that kid out front to say those things. His statement made little sense. Levi needs to worry about his ability to see his son and watch what he says, his attorney knows that and should be careful.

Firelight July 10, 2009 9:30 AM

I agree, Levi could be a worry but by the guv taking the high road right now it lends to her credibility to attack after the book is published (if it is published). Most mothers I know count him as scum this includes my liberal mom friends. That is just my experience but he is every parents nightmare.

Now Meghan McCain's book worries me. I can't get a read on her. There is also the book coming out by the two Fox embeds that were part of the source for the VF piece. I don't trust them either.

McGruff July 10, 2009 9:30 AM

Democrats and the MSM know republicans won't fight back so they are free to spout lies and half truths. Sarah chooses the other path. To fight the smears. (hey, isn't there a website with that name?) Good for her. She's got spunk.

Bill in Baltimore July 10, 2009 9:34 AM

Yogi41 July 10, 2009 10:01 AM

Lipstick,

You're right; the author keeps the list, not Palin.

Firelight July 10, 2009 10:02 AM

Hey Bill:

Meghan McCain's book is rumored to be titled "my life as a republican" and she did confirm that there will be a chapter on Gov. Palin.

I honestly can't read her. The media talks about how the McCain's hate and blame Palin but I haven't seen any comments to support it.

Gov. Palin also still talks so highly of him that I am wondering if the media made up all the rift or if she is just being respectful.

Meg McCain is a loose canon so I just don't know what she will come up with.

manajordan July 10, 2009 10:04 AM

Sarah Palin just needs to be Sarah Palin. If she is someone who works best knowing what kind of smears she is fighting against, than that is what she should do. I recently wrote up a blog post of Sarah Palin's recent move from a sport psychology perspective if anyone is interested talking a little about individualized zones and goal setting etc.

http://conservativeindependentrant.blogspot.com/2009/07/sport-psychology-perspective.html

Lipstick July 10, 2009 10:09 AM

No one cares about Levi anymore.

Ms. McCain's book will be read and believed by people who do not like the guv anyway.

Governor Palin does need to move on. I think she is DONE with addressing her resignation in interviews now. She has explained on tape and in print many times. They have all the info they need.

She does not want to be seen as whining.

Instead, she needs to speak about the future. What she is going to do to help the conservative movement. How excited she is to start this new chapter of service in her life. How she loves America. How she is inspired by her son fighting for his country and she is ready to fight for her country but in a different way.

She needs to outline a few points about things she wants to hit Obama with now and hit them hard and often. She needs to have a quick way to brush off questions about her resignation and why she resigned and then speak of her outlook on Obama's policies.

People love the tough, fiesty and well, a bit bitchy Palin. Not the talking about all the crap from the campaign and in AK after the campaign. We know all that.

I just hope that her book does not address this complaining much. Just mention it in a brief way but not in detail and move on. People want to read about the tough woman from AK.

Please Sarah, No more interviews or comments about the ethics complaints and the bad treatment by the press. You have stated that. Now get up and start to speak out on issues that are important to you. Be tough, remember the lessons from your Dad. Talk tough, be spunky, sarcastic and mean if you have to be.

Put all that energy into tearing Obama to pieces. Go, girl, go!!!

Lipstick,

you got all that right and I think she will do as you say.

CharterOakie July 10, 2009 10:26 AM

Let your heart not be troubled, friends.

As this and so many other sites and blogs confirm, Sarah has inspired millions to stand and fight, for her and for the country. Each of us, in our own sphere of influence, will do what we can to respond to any jackal or hyena attacking her publicly. Look how effective RAM and the other editors here are at exposing the ankle-biters. Professionally; precisely; even politely. Look at the pressure that was exerted on Letterman's corporate sponsors. We're just warming up, finding our footing.

Continetti can keep the list; good. Ziegler, Geller, Coulter, Greta, Hannity, Levin (and many others; the numbers are increasing) can expose and confront, using their larger megaphones.

Sarah, on the other hand, can prepare and gain strength for battle with the more serious and dangerous opponents. They move in the shadows, behind the scenes, pulling the strings. Obama and others are mainly puppets, encouraged and permitted to dance on the stage of power so long as useful to the cowardly puppeteers behind the scenes, operating in the darkness, who would wield power through them.

Sarah radiates light. Those who prefer darkness can’t stand her or it, and it’s plain to see.

Paul's epistle to the Ephesians, chapter 6, starting in verse 10. See especially verse 12. Check it out for yourself.

Dan C July 10, 2009 10:26 AM

What do you think about this? It seems in the press when Obama confronts lies about him, he is setting the record straight. When Sarah confronts lies about her, she is a whiner and complainer who cant take the heat. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT!? How can she overcome this? I guess she just has to live with it and pick her battles, which is totally unfair, but I dont know. She is damned either way like she said.

Bill in Baltimore July 10, 2009 10:37 AM

CharterOakie,

you said:
>>Sarah radiates light. Those who prefer darkness can’t stand her or it, and it’s plain to see.

oh man, you got that right.

Putting on the full armor of God, that's what this nation needs to do.

Have you been on C4P long ? I have been on for a month, NEVER GOING AWAY, NOW MATTER WHAT SHE DOES.

Bill in Baltimore July 10, 2009 10:39 AM

DanC,

>>She is damned either way like (fighting back or not fighting back)

Correct.
One situation is "standing up for what is right"

The other situation is "whining"

You can't win.

Words are everything, right ?

Dan C:

It's called sexism when ordinary people do it and media bias when in print. Same thing happened to Hillary; women are just supposed to accept their second class status and not complain that they are being marginalized. "No one wants to hear that."

Similarly, note that no one accuses Sharpton of "whining" about bigoted comments in/by the media. People say he is ridiculous or over-the-top, but "whining" (and "shrill", for that matter) is reserved for women.

Bill in Baltimore July 10, 2009 10:47 AM

alwaysfiredup.

I don't see it as sexism.

I just see it as

- they turned on Hillary
- they despise Sarah
- they despise GW
- the love 0bama

Bill in Baltimore:

I found C4P in the past several weeks. Love it. Also follow FR (Palin threads) closely and comment there.

Gird, stand, and march.

Lock 'n load.

Dan C July 10, 2009 10:54 AM

I just wonder how she EFFECTIVELY fights it. Sure, we know the truth, but what about the casual news watcher. Will they?

Nancy July 10, 2009 11:08 AM

I love Governor Palin's sarcasm.

She heard a rumor that she resigned because pornographic pictures of her were about to hit the Internet.
"Between which pregnancies did I get to pose for those?" she said sarcastically.

Love. Her.

Maybe that rumor was about those weird pictures Shannyn Moore took of Governor Palin. Mae Day will be remembered forever around here! Classic thread.

Carmelo Junior July 10, 2009 11:19 AM

The left don't know what to do. Even after her weird decision to resign and called quitter, her popularity remains high. CNN, Gallup and Ramussen have her at 70% of Republican approval.

The left thought she was finished but they were wrong again.

I think the only thing that might make the left let Sarah alone is her strong announcement that she will not run for president ever. Just like Condi Rice.

Condi was attacked and attacked before she made the announcement that she will never seek any elective office. Now Condi is somewhere in California doing her thing and nobody cares for her any more.

juju July 10, 2009 11:36 AM

Dream On CJ...that will not happen.
Not yet, and why should it? You can come up with some strange things.

Another hatchet and condescending article by Peggy Noonan:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124716984620819351.html

The cultural and academic elites' criticisim of Palin is a self-fulfilling prophecy for them.
(especially Noonan in this article).

In any event, I believe Wall Street is acutally more threatend by Palin than some might believe.

Wall Street politics and their political allegiance with the Democratic party is murky and shrewd.

Palin's social populism is a threat to the Wall Street crowd (regardless if so-called republicans like Rove and Noonan write OP-ed pieces for the Wall Street Journal).

Palin must target Wall Street.

Piney July 10, 2009 1:00 PM

Rasmussen: An early look at the 2012 race for the Republican nomination shows Mitt Romney at 25%, Sarah Palin at 24%, and Mike Huckabee at 22%. Forty percent (40%) of GOP voters say that Palin hurt her chances of winning the nomination by resigning as Alaska’s Governor last week. Among all voters, Republicans now have a three-point edge on the Generic Congressional Ballot.

==================
Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 30% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-seven percent (37%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of –7

Ah, Peggy...

I wondered when she was going to clear the air from her refined nostrils and impart her opinion on the good Guv.

You're slowing down, old gal. Methinks it's time for you to pass your post to another. Perhaps someone who claim the title "conservative" and not risk being suing for false advertising.

Pity being bitchy, catty, and and pretentious aren't actionable offenses. Were that so, 2/3 of the Eastern Seaboard would be served with a complaint.
