Palin Actually EXTENDED Her Influence in Alaska Today

UPDATE: Just watched Governor-designate Parnell's interview with the ADN, should shoot down any thoughts that Sarah is just going to go away. This is a guy who knows what's going on, and if anyone can give us tea leaves to read, it's Parnell.

---

Obviously, I agree with a lot of what has been said here today. I was shocked, and I still support Gov. Palin. She's far from finished politically; she's not going away; she just freed herself from the uniquely Alaskan pettiness provided by the frivolous ethics complaints that we all love to hate. However, I think we need to pause for a minute to note the Alaskan angles of her decision to step aside.

I have been asking myself this question for months - "if Sarah doesn't run for re-election, what happens to the pipeline?" Had she simply not run for re-election, she would have triggered a competitive GOP gubernatorial primary, and run the risk of the "Good Old Boys Club" (or "CBC" for those Alaskans who understand that acronym) taking the GOP nomination and the governorship. Otherwise known as the "Republican Majority", this group is vociferously anti-Palin and even functions as a SEPARATE PARTY in the State Senate - where both the majority and minority leaders are Republicans, due to the "Majority's" decision to govern in coalition with the Democrat's rather than work with their fellow Republicans. If they had taken the governorship, the pipeline project (and many other Palin programs) would have been near the top of the cut list.

However, by resigning now, Palin installs Sean Parnell as an incumbent before the 2010 primary. So, instead of fighting off a strong "CBC" challenger, Parnell will have a much clearer shot at keeping the office in Palinite hands for another four (or possibly eight) years. Sarah Palin did not give up on her reforms today - she institutionalized them, Now, they will not leave office with her, but rather continue under Gov. Parnell.

While we're on the subject of Sean Parnell, I think we need to welcome him to the Governorship. In following Palin for so long, I have followed Parnell by default - both as Lt. Governor and as a congressional candidate. He's a stand-up guy, a fine campaigner, and a fantastic leader for Alaska. In fact, with a little seasoning, he might be a good national candidate himself someday.

So, I'd like to offer a toast to Governor-designate Parnell, all of the accomplishments of the Palin administration, and all of the fun we will be having now that "Gov. Palin" is now "just Sarah". Something tells me this is only the beginning for Sarah, and I for one am more than ready for the next stage of this journey.

TWO WORDS WE'LL LIKELY BE SEEING MORE AFTER 1-20-13....

PRESIDENT OBAMA

TWO WORDS...Very disappointed.

FOUR WORDS...Very disappointed for America.

SIX WORDS...Very disappointed for America and my kids.

I just don't see how it makes any political sense. The image that is going to come out of this is that she can't take the heat and got out of the kitchen.

And if this country has any future beyond the little Chavez in the White House it's going to take someone with the fortitude to take the heat.

I'm very disappointed and weep for the crappy choices that this leaves the GOP (which frankly sucks as as a party).

7-3-09, hope fades for America.

1-20-13, I guess it was only a dream.

Too bad Adam for you and the rest of
C4P's team , who know Alaska's rather unusual political system/history to the Nnth degree, will never get that phone call from one of the networks to get the real story on what Sarah faced daily dealing with the AnkleBiters and Alaskan RINO's who treated her with more disdain than the Alaskan Democrats.

They will instead call on some beat reporter from the ADN who just got hired last week. Or call some NRO columnist...

gardunne63 July 4, 2009 12:24 AM

Your loss. Too bad you still let your opinions be formed by a few chattering heads. I guess you'll let them pick your nominee again too.

techno July 4, 2009 12:28 AM

Adam, America owes you a debt that we can never repay. Sarah Palin will be the next POTUS because of your tireless efforts to get her name legitimized on the Internet and the right-wing blogosphere and therefore giving Sarah added credibility to be considered by McCain for VP.

Again Adam thank you for everything you have done. You are a bona fide American hero.

Second to Techno! Cheers for Adam. He's the man that brought us our next Reagan!!
And yes cheers to a decent man in Gov. Sean Parnell. I wish him success as well as Sarah!

Welcome soon to be Gov Parnell

Seriously some people gotta take a chill pill. Sarah is a GENIUS. Don't you all get it, she is finally free now, she can travel across America without bogus complaints being made against her, she can work behind the scenes without people smothering her. She was being smothered in Alaska, people gotta start looking at this thing logically. Stop with this all "The sky is falling" BS, get a life. Sarah knows EXACTLY what she is doing. She has been contemplating this for a while, God Bless her for standing up for what is right. She spoke from her heart today, no teleprompter, no notes, just Sarah being Sarah. She is AWESOME. Now she can focus on her book, touring the country(and the world) and campaigning for Conservatives that share her views.

NoMORinos:

You act like Sarah Palin has lost her mojo because she is stepping down from being governor.

Sarah Palin is the same human being as she was yesterday-same charisma, authenticity, same ability ot raise boatloads of money, same cogent eloquence and crowd-pleaser.

Nothing has changed except she no longer will have a title. No big deal.

gardunne63 July 4, 2009 12:35 AM

Night all, it's late on the East Coast and I'm going to pray that I wake up to find out tomorrow that Sarah has *really* gone rogue on us. Today was almost normal 'Cuda rogue-sish.

She owes the Republican Party nothing. Nothing. Remember that, kiddos. Night all!

techno July 4, 2009 12:35 AM

Sorry something will change: Sarah will have more time to attack Obama and his radical socialist agenda. How could I forget that? I must be slipping.

Torrey July 4, 2009 12:36 AM

Well, I for one am not giving up. Sure it doesn't make sense politically, but Sarah Palin is an unconventional politician. We are also living in times where the political landscape is changing rapidly so I think it makes sense for Sarah to shake things up. I am so excited for what is next for her.

john July 4, 2009 12:39 AM

When it was announced that Senator McCain picked Sarah Palin, I googled her name. Her membership in Feminists for Life was the very first thing that popped up. Trigg Palin was the second thing.

Abortion has hardened the human race. 4,000 American babies were killed today. More than one million have been killed since I joined Team Sarah. 90% of Down Syndrome babies never see the light of day.

How is it possible that a Governor gets pregnant, delivers a Down Syndrome boy and four months later is nominated for vice-president of the United States? Then ask yourself how is it possible that this Governor actually turns out to be a great candidate who gave her ticket more sustained support than any other vice-presidential candidate in the history of the United States?

How often does the defense of Sarah Palin start with "They hate her because she's pro-life and didn't have Trigg aborted?" I hear this from pundits that I did not even know were pro-life. It's all out in the open now. There is no turning back.

Almighty God is obviously revealing his plan to those with enough common sense to look. I trust Him. Sarah Palin does.

Last fall, when it became obvious that the old fighter pilot didn’t have it and was dragging Sarah down to defeat, I thought that a healthy reelect number in 2010 would be just what the doctor ordered. But after watching the petty sniping, even by the Republicans in Alaska, I figured, what's the point. Alaska’s Republican Party wants stimulus money and Alaska is not technically even in a recession. Add in the 15 bizarre ethics charges that cost me $150.

Sarah Palin is a careful and astute politician. I think she made her mind up before she announced the mega book deal. It's a real gaudy number for an Alaskan politician and she would have waited until after her reelection to avoid any blow back. She knows her fellow Alaskans. 60% of them are registered independent.

When she closed the pipeline deal for all practical intents and purposes, I felt that this would happen. Even resigning was predictable because that gives Parnell a head start over whoever Big Oil wants.

We all have good reason to feel privileged to be supporters of Sarah Palin. God is not done with her.

techno July 4, 2009 12:43 AM

Why give up? What has really changed? Sarah Palin after July 26th will no longer have a job to go to.

Torrey, Ronald Reagan spent 6 years in the wilderness without a job to go to. Things worked all right for him in 1980. So Sarah Palin will spend 40 months in the wilderness without a job.

Do you think that our Sarah might make good use of her time to take back one of the houses of Congress and get her ready to do battle during the primary season on the way to securing the GOP nomination in 2012.

Torrey, this is a great day.

That's the spirit Adam! Many posts here have been too down/fainthearted. Sarah has just officially gone national AND remained local!

She's going to be a Force like never before. Her "Coming Out Party" will be the midterms when she packs them in 20,000 at a time behind candidates of HER choice.

She's got the Conservative Movement in the palm of her hand and when more details come out they'll be on fire!

Sad thing is the Left knows this and many on "our side" don't. She'll never let entrenched power have the last word. She sees this as OUR fight--and she's right!

LAW July 4, 2009 12:46 AM

Adam, I wholeheartedly agree w/ your assessment. My brother came to dinner and he was watching the MSM about Palin. I was explaining a little bit about the "Big Oil Repubs", Dems, and Repubs in Alaska. He immediately connected the dots and said this will give Parnell a year and a half as governor. He agreed she did this to help him get re-elected Dec. '10.

I've always wondered on the long snowed in days if she and her dad played chess together.

She seems to always be thinking several moves ahead.

LindaW July 4, 2009 12:48 AM

That's what I thought too. I thought that was a great move to make sure that Parnell will have an edge when running for re-election as an incumbent. Palin will become the shadow governor guiding his hand and offering inspiration whenever needed.

Perpetually perplexed July 4, 2009 12:49 AM

When I cast my vote for Sarah as Governor of our state, I did so because I was impressed and astounded and when she spoke I actually WANTED to listen. I was so damn proud that we, Alaska, had the BEST DAMN GOVERNOR in the WHOLE UNITED STATES! And she was ours, all ours.

When she accepted as the VP nominee, her speech thrilled me and moved me to tears. Again, this was ALASKA's Governor, the BEST ONE IN AMERICA! My pride was enormous. My family and friends could not believe how taken I was with a politician.

Then I became frightened. What if America had caught on? I didn't want to share her greatness with everybody! I wanted her here, in Alaska. I wanted to hoard her for my state. I wanted to gloat.

Did I know then that she would be destined to do more than govern our lovely state? I think I did.

Today, I was forced to let go and by a much wiser woman than I am. Sarah, herself. A shining star like Sarah Palin is bigger than any one state. She is a much needed force for the WHOLE of us. AMERICA needs her. Our collective need outweighs my selfish, greedy, gloating, (she's Alaska's and only Alaska's) nature.

Reading the C4P website only reinforced my thoughts, I knew she had fans, supporters and followers, BUT she was still ours.

My heart both swells with pride and bereftly aches.

I am the spoiled Alaskan child who learned to share, really share, today.

Onward and upward.

Torrey July 4, 2009 12:50 AM

Think what this leaves....MITT ROMNEY as next in line in the GOP and OBAMA as the likely re-elected President-for-life.

This sends a terrible message of weakness IF..she plans on being in Politics (I don't think she does, I think she's done). Her not only not running but then QUITING and then her talking about the pressure, the jokes and all that stuff just sends the wrong message.

Do I want a President to rebuild this country that can't stand the pressure? Would she resign from the Presidency in 2015 if she got bad press or she just had enough?

Maybe I'm totally wrong...I hope I am.

I hope I get to go to D.C. in January of 2013 to see her sworn in on the steps of the Capitol but this is just looks like a very very bad turn of events.

This is so dissapointing. What is in her mind??

If she really going to run for president, how will she explain quitting her elective office??

In the debates, what will she have to defend herself? two years and a run?

Reagan had TWO complete terms as governor. Sarah is the first governor with incredible opportunity to become president that calls it quits before the term ends.

In the meanwhile N. Korea is firing missiles at us.

The perception will be Women can't be president because they can't take the heat.

Let's see, but this really put many hearts down like mine.

I even follow the prophesies of a woman president. Sarah was the only woman that makes all the description.

Obama went to bed very very happy tonight!@

Seeems like Sarah has abandonned

Condi Rice-Colin Powell fiasco all over again! Who minority or women in the GOP has cojones??

Alice Not in Wonderland Anymore July 4, 2009 1:02 AM

Two words describe my reaction, "shock and awe", never mind the welcome relief of the Jacko story blitz. Sarah Palin will be analyzed until the day she dies. She does not owe anyone more explanation than she gave in her annoucement. She will have time to think, and consider her options, and spend time with her family. She will never get the credit she deserves because of her unabashed conservative views. She will always invite the disdain of the MSM; but she will always be Sarah Palin.

wisetrog July 4, 2009 1:04 AM

Um. the fact that she advertised her PAC's purpose as paying for her travel sounds rather ominous now, doesn't it?

It is 8 months later, and I have stayed a a researcher and admirer for Sarah. With this announcement from Sarah today, I will continue to keep track of her. Because she matters.

Carmelo Junior July 4, 2009 1:14 AM

techno,

I predicted, Americans would start losing faith in Sarah if she did not run for reelection. With this cut and run, they will think sarah was just playing with the heart of America.

The only thing that can revive America's faith in her is she starts traveling, and then announce her run for POTUS, but with this, it would be difficult. Very difficult...

Let's see the polls in 2 weeks. I think even Jindal might get ahead of Sarah :(

LouisianaRedneck July 4, 2009 1:14 AM

Techno, I agree. Having a title is great...but not everything. Gingrich doesn't have a title...and he's all over the place. Nobody has what Sarah has...character and convictions. She's still a shoe-in for the GOP nominee, if she chooses to go for it.

CJ, You have been a very strong advocate...and I know how much you love Sarah. I even understand your concern. But, in the end, I don't think this will matter.

In three years, the fed up majority won't want to vote for anyone with anything to do with any establishment. It's Tea Party Time! And today, Sarah Palin just became the official Tea Party candidate.

You gotta love how, even during this speech, she got a dig in with, "the real climate change." Heh. The climate is changing; and the extended forecast: 'Cuda with a chance of reign.

Über July 4, 2009 1:17 AM

I love Adam.

I remember a sleepless night back in August when I and a bunch of others waited with bated breath for either a new post by Drew teasing us with new hints about a VP nod or news about who was picked. I commented on his blog back then as "onetrueuber" and I recognize several names here from there. It's pretty cool to see.

As for his analysis, I think it is spot on. I think she is so completely underestimated by, well, pretty much everyone in the State run media that they imagine that Sarah, being a dunce that she is, must be quitting because of something bad.

But the thing is, she's not quitting. She's playing the game on her terms. She's ensuring the security of Alaska as best she can while at the same time, I believe, answering the call of duty for America.

I've seen some posit that she's going to start a new party. I don't think that's true. I think a more plausible possibility is that she will help restore the Republican party to what it's meant to be and assist the backstabbers, RINOs and lackeys to the back of the pack.

She inspires because she's just so refreshing and honest and forthright. But like I've said before, I don't think they know how to handle a principled woman. And they certainly don't know how to handle one with the natural political savvy Sarah has.

I think she's at least 5 or 6 moves ahead of them. And it's fun to watch.

I hope she runs for the presidency. Given the highlights of her tenure she stated in her presser...the industry being restored to the private sector, blocking special interest, restoring fiscal responsibility, respect for life and our brave men and women in uniform...I think she's laid out for the world to see the broad strokes of what she can do for America...items that stand in direct contrast to the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Team Sarah response is overwhelmingly positive from the founders' official statements to the blog asking for reactions which is well over a 1,000 comments!

Facebook response is good, too, last I checked.

Interesting that the overtly political blogs, e.g., HA and Redstate are the ones that are the most negative. 'Cause they are so into politics they just don't get how different Sarah is!

Of course, she's the lead on Drudge all day! Wonder what he thinks though?

Patty Hewes July 4, 2009 1:21 AM

Why? Sorry, It's hard for me to believe that a bunch of left wing extremists/palin haters drove the Governor out of office. That's not Sarah Palin

* Financial Security, Not running for any office.

It should be noted that Alaskan Ethics laws are probably the strictest in the nation.

* Did the Governor think that she would eventually fade away nationally if she chose to serve her full term?

* If so, then one could assume that her future present "opportunities" would quickly go away 18 months from now.

Maybe she felt that she needed more time to focus on her book that she plans to release in 2010?

* Financial Security, Keeping options up for future run.

* Alaska is a nightmare if you are planning on running for national office in the near future, so it was essential for the Governor to get out of the state.

*Why not wait until 2010? Well, If she waits until then should would have a hard time campaigning under Alaska ethics laws and doing other things that are required of a potential candidate for office.

* She felt that she needed to establish a national team fast due to concerns about her national image, It will give her more time to deal with national issues with competent national advisers at her side giving her advice.

2012? 2016? 2020?

* The Governor needs to come up with a clever narrative to limit the damage that her resignation has cost her. I am sure they discussed these things before making that decision.

* Be on alert for a Sarah Palin blackout! This might give us some clues on what the Governor intends to do in the future.

This must drive a stake through GOP establishment. They must be quaking with fear. Some lowlives like Amy Holmes or John Weaver will snicker but others will understand. If, just suppose, she did really pull out of politics. Where would that have left GOP? Because like it or not all the downticket guys are counting on her charsima to pull them into the office. Some wanted her to go away but others would know that she was a talent and nobody would like to lose a talent like that, especially party that's in dire straits like GOP.

She has stuck back at lefty bloggers n ethics complaints but her reasoning applies to RNC elites as well. If they try too smart and push her away, she can walk away. She will not bend to their will. She will not run when they tell her to, she will sit n stand as they order her. That's the message for the GOP. If ever GOP wants to use her talent, the party needs to stop playing its games. She put them on notice.

I put my feelings on this up on my blog. I support her. Being a military guy - I understand that when you can no longer be effective in your leadership post - you think of the unit first and resign your post. Even if it's due to no fault of your own - you think of the unit first.

Governor Palin thought of Alaskans first here. If she's going to continue in politics - she's made a shrewdly good move which also has a lot of honor in it.

If she's had too much - and she's going home - I certainly understand. I'm 6 foot 2 inches, two hundred and forty pounds of Mississippi muscle. I have been in combat - I have buried shipmates. I can tell you - if I had been in Sarah Palin's shoes - I wouldn't have lasted through the Convention speech.

Listening to her resignation speech I was yet agin impressed with this woman - She really does care about her state - enough to do what she feels is best for it regardless of how it may be perceived.

Sarah Palin has such integrity and character. She demonstrates this whether rallying crowds at a convention, speaking up for the unborn, debating with a vice presidential nominee or making a resignation speech. She is is authentic, whether mother, wife, or governor. She continues to deserves all the support she can get.

I hope you all at C4P continue to keep the rest of the world informed about her.

Doubtful 12% (339)

No way 4% (122)

unsure 2% (44)

My God, did anyone hear Geraldine Ferraro.

"People wanted to talk to Sarah Palin as Governor. But nobody wants to talk to Sarah Palin."

You see. THIS is exactly why the Libs and pundits will never get her. They don't understand when Sarah Palin came on the scene and connected with them, they couldn't care less that she was the Governor of Alaska. They only cared that a women named Sarah Palin began to speak their language, someone they could relate to, and someone who would look after their interest.

No offense to Alaskans, but I'm personally thrilled that she will be coming to look out for my interest in the lower 48.

Indie Footprint July 4, 2009 1:59 AM

Adam, I thought the same thing too with Parnell. And thank you for all your efforts in the Palin phenomenon. Now all you have to do is find her a running mate. :)

Ted July 4, 2009 2:00 AM

No two words reassure me more on Palin than "MEG STAPLETON" who said this about Palin playing basketball (and politics) on FOX today:

"She will always think outside the box. She will never accept politics as usual and I bet you right now they haven't even recognized the fact that she just passed one in for an easy lay-up. She saw their block and she went around it and that is how she operates. She will get the job done. She will make the difference. Don't stand in her way."

Thanks Meghan.

And thanks Adam B.

JohnDoeAt30Below July 4, 2009 2:00 AM

In 2001, Sarah Palin was the popular mayor of a small Alaska town.

In 2002, she was defeated in the Republican primary for Lt. Governor. Folks thought she was finished.

Four years later, she beat an incumbent Republican Governor in the primary and then went on to defeat a Democrat ex-Governor.

DO NOT count her out. DO NOT assume that she is "tired" or "wants to spend more time with her family" or that "she is through with politics." DO NOT make the mistake that others will and underestimate her.

DO NOT think for one second that Sarah Palin is a quitter.

The Left has made some asinine statements but this qualifies in the top 5.

Does Gerry think invitations will dry up because Sarah no longer has a title? Does she think that she will no longer be playing in front of standing room audiences? Will GOP candidates for Congress scorn her? Will SarahPAC suddenly dry up?

By the way Sarah increased her membership on her Twitter today by 5000.

Failing that, I like Judd Gregg.

Über July 4, 2009 2:11 AM

Techno...

I totally agree.

It's amazing how many of even the leaders of conservative thought don't get her. I love Steyn. I like Lowry and Geraghty. I enjoy Morrissey. But they, and even Gateway Pundit do not get her, what she's doing or why she's doing it.

They don't fully get her appeal even though they claim to...but their first reaction is to suggest that her only strength lie in the fact that she's the Gov of Alaska...and that by "quitting", she's giving in/folding under pressure/cutting her legs out from under her. They don't get that she can be much more effective for the cause of conservatism and for Alaska as Citizen Sarah than she could ever be as besieged by baseless ethics charges Governor Palin.

In the latest blog post on Gateway Pundit I respond using my real first name, Mary Beth, and I lay out things that I've seen here and things that I believe are true about Palin and her motivations.

But it truly astounds me how so many of the "big thinkers" don't see what many regular folks do. They don't get that her not playing by the so-called rules...by taking the battle to the enemy...she strengthens her appeal among those who are sick to freakin' death of the establishment.

I really like Judd Gregg.

Adam, first choice for me? That bright young man from Indiana, Mitch Daniels.

However-I think I hit on it months ago without connecting the dots as to why she would have to go: money. She will need four to six hundred million dollars to compete with His Oneness. She'll need to fight like a junkyard dog all the way, 'cause she's a scrapper and an underdog.

But you can't do it without raising money, starting now, and being a smart litttle squirrel and putting the money away for a rainy day.

Lastly, she will have to hire the most ruthless band of assassins in the conservative world.

Indie Footprint July 4, 2009 2:17 AM

Techno,

I'm glad you had that reaction, because I couldn't believe how stupid and blind that remark was.

Ferraro started to diss Sarah, at first in a subtle and passive aggressive way during the campaign, then the bigger the crowds got, the more upset with Sarah she got. I was really strange to watch her, her face would get redder and redder as she insisted that Sarah was a total light weight, yada yada, same old meme.

I don't know whether she thinks Sarah will be a nobody without a title, or just that she really hopes so. Its likely the latter.

JohnDoeAt30Below July 4, 2009 2:22 AM

section9, you are dead on. Due to the goofy Alaska ethics rules, she couldn't raise a dime. Look at the Alaska Fund, she couldn't even say a word about it without incurring more ethics baloney.

Indie Footprint July 4, 2009 2:23 AM

Adam, good choice and Bolton has been all over the airwaves lately. My hopes is that she will choose someone from outside the box too. I've subscribed to the idea that she needs someone with solid foreign policy credentials. Would be really cool if you ended up 2 for 2. :)

In my opinion there is much more to this. muuuuuch more than she is letting on. There has to be some kind of amazing opportunity that popped up that she had to take for her/Alaska's future.

This is someone who just last year was on track to become vice president of the United States of America...She would not be stepping aside just because of some petty Alaskans.....no way, not buyin that at all. There is more to this story and I'm stickin to that haha.

She didn't seem sad in the press conference. She seemed almost jumpy to me. Once again I don't think its necessarily something bad(we hope) I just think there are many unanswered questions that will need to be answered before I have a clear opinion.

Still luv Sarah though.

For Sarah's VP, my dream candidate is Eric Cantor. He's brilliant, young, diligent (heck, he's the Rep. WHIP!), and he's POSITIVE----all of which are qualities shared by Sarah Palin.

Über July 4, 2009 3:48 AM

I think it's time the Republican party, "conservative" bloggers and pundits dusted off Reagan's 11th Commandment, don't you?

For those that don't know...Reagan's 11th Commandment is:

"Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican."

I think it's high time for them to stop nattering and complaining...especially the gang at HA and National Review. I said this during the 2008 campaign too. I never understood why Republicans would tear into McCain after he was the official nominee...and this is coming from someone who swore she'd NEVER vote for McCain. But to rip into the only candidate who could stop a truly disastrous opponent during a hot election cycle...it's downright suicidal.

The know it all bloggers/pundits and "insiders" should give it a rest...stop tearing Palin down regardless of how they feel about her...and wait to see what happens next rather than decide the reason has to be the most negative option.

Frankly...sometimes it seems like some of these people are highly positioned and deeply embedded concern trolls.

wisetrog July 4, 2009 4:17 AM

Lowry is risble today. Amy Holmes was a plain bitch. KLO couldn't have controlled her joy even though she was coy. Goldberg was pathetic. Only Steyn was dignified.

I'd love to see these pundits when after this move, she gets even bigger crowds. What will this do to her?

BTW, there's a precedent for this. A few years ago, Congress party won elections in India and wanted Sonia Gandhi, the widow of the Gandhi family, to step and assume the mantle of prime minister. She refused and selected Manmohan Singh instead. But nobody doubts that she is the central authority to whom even the PM answers to. Since then she has become the party chairman. The good thing about this is that it has helped the Congress party to move right and become free-market n reform friendly, which has obviously affected the amazing growth rates of India.

Of course, this politics doesn't translate as it is to America but Sarah is now in good position to be a leader of conservative movement and become absolutely crucial to its renaissance. She can re-define GOP and national politics, she can inspire dozens of normal people to enter politics and she can take America back. An approach where a team of out of touch beltway hacks keep spewing stuff from a central location but the local offices are pretty apathetic won't work. She has to make sure every state, every country level organization is fine-combed if she has to battle ACORN.

As techno keeps saying, Obama and his minions are outside of normal politics and nothing less than a complete overhaul of approach will work. Sarah has taken that risk. She is not just Ronald Reagan, she is now on the level of Calvin Coolidge in terms of potential.

Amanda K July 4, 2009 4:26 AM

Oh, one more thing..I think we can still refer to her as "Governor", even though she'll no longer officially be in that position. They, on FOX, address Huckabee as "Governor" all the time. I think it's the same with former presidents. Someone correct me if that's not right.

SCSoxFan July 4, 2009 5:17 AM

Several things --

From Jonathan Martin's latest piece:

"Fred Malek, a longtime Republican fundraiser and Palin ally, played host to the governor and her husband, Todd, less than a month ago in Washington and said it was 'so clear to me that she was terribly unhappy with the position she was in and the role she was playing.'

He didn’t learn of Palin’s decision until he got a phone call from the governor this morning, when she cited the pressures of a job that had become consumed with FOIA requests and ethics investigations and the demands it taken on her family and national political prospect."

And, "Malek and some of her other outside advisers expressed skepticism that she would run for president in 2012."

And, "(Meg) Stapleton cited issues Palin was passionate about – energy, national security and free enterprise – but indicated that the governor was being vague about what she planned to do next for a reason.

'Those blanks need to be filled in,' said Stapleton when asked specifically what Palin planned after turning her office over to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell."

I think Erik Erickson at RedState has it right when he said Palin's future is in politics, but not ELECTORAL politics. That she can help lead the conservative Renaissance but not not benefit from it herself, electorally. He used the analogy of Obi-Wan in Star Wars -- strike her down and she can become more powerful than you can imagine.

Tim used a Moses analogy. I agree, but for a diffrent reason. Moses led Israel to the Promised Land but could not cross over himself. Palin, I think, wants to help lead, even if it means she can't be President herself. She will take her chances with this risky move and see where she stands in 2012 and go from there.

In short, she doesn't really know where this is leading and doesn't have it all planned out -- she just knows that what is happening now in Alaska isn't working and is untenable for her and her family.

My heart wants to say she can still be President in 2012, even as my head says that cold political logic dictates she has closed that door. We'll see.

scsoxfan, at this point, she'd reveal to none of them whether she wants to run or not. The only problem from is whether people like fred malek will be disappointed by what happened today and will cease to back her. that may happen. but I am thinking once the shrewd palin backers will weigh things quietly and see where this is heading.

I think she has a plan. Once this furor dies down and she tours round the country and she connects with people even more, learns her stuff on policy and people begin to see her that she is a perfect match of ideology, policy and charisma, do you think this will stop them from backing her? When she streams into Iowa, the voter will flock to her just as they did today. All she has to do is win those primaries and the nomination is still hers. Obama was a movement, so will be she. You can't stop a movement, she'll be so teflon coated that those charges will not stick.

That doesn't happen, she is still the leader of the party who will bring back congress n senate and restrain Obama. Once she gets credit for that, there's no stopping her for 2016 and beyond and she's young and she can run for senate and come back and win.

It's just a matter of whether its 2012 or somewhat later. Either way, she'll be the one who will have stopped the Obama fascism in tracks.

I have the strangest feeling.

It's almost like the air's been sucked out of the room. Not in a bad way, but in a.... I have no idea. There's some excitement, some shock, a new sense of freedom, and yes, even some fear.

I have no idea what's coming. Something just changed. The paradigm has shifted forever. This is one of those moments when there's nothing to say.

Is it a gamble? Oh, yeah. The Gov just stepped out on major leap of faith. But she's done this sort of thing before. I feel like it's
out of my hands for the moment, like my role now is to just sit back and watch something happen.

Faith, courage, and a little more faith are warranted now.

baboonking July 4, 2009 6:32 AM

i'm not surprised by the guvs move.

i think she's thought about this for a while and has decided that she if she were to run for higher office the story of sarah palin would consume her actual policies and ideas.

she can do more for the nation in recuriting, fundraising and promoting her ideals away from elected office than she can trying to gain elected office. plus it would allow her to spend more time with her family aswell as earn a better living.

i've had this indication ever since her recent speech in anchorage.

btw achance over at redstate is saying that "another shoe is about to drop" regarding a still pending ethics complaint. its the one he's been harping over since she was announced to do with the emails. they may be embrassing but i doubt the guv would resign because of embrassing emails. i mean come on look at what she already has been put through.

A ragtag string of colonies declared its independence today over 200 years ago. All they had was some guts and a belief in a little thing called freedom. They took the risky road, the road that had no guarantees, for every chance for success is also a chance for failure. The only guarantees are in jail.

They could sink or swim, and for awhile, it looked like they were sinking fast. And then, in my opinion, Providence stepped in and the flame of freedom began to burn bright.

Sarah Palin just broke the mold. An underdog in every sense of the word, she has chosen a path that to most people looks like certain suicide, and she may not come rocketing to success overnight. But she just threw down the gauntlet. She has crossed the Rubicon.

I think this has been on her mind for awhile as far as not seeking reelection is concerned. And then I think that her trip to see the soldiers in the hospital overseas was the final push to resign early. There isn't much time left.

There are no guarantees. It's a little nerve-wracking at first, but I think that twenty years from now we'll look back on this as the day America experienced a "rebirth of freedom. And that the government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Bill,

Oh, I support her, never doubt it. I'm just riding the emotional rollercoaster.

As much as the pundits love to complain about the timing, I think it's inspired. Independence Day, plus the weekend gives people time to ruminate and digest a huge announcement like this rather than go full-force feeding frenzy immediately.

It should be one crazy Governor's picnic. Wish I could be there.

great. It has been a roller coaster for sure.

The Gov knows what she is doing. She shocked the political world.

Rush is off next week. Hmmmmm.

I'm not trying to take any credit, but this week I just felt like it was a crescendo coming.

The past couple of weeks / months when we look back we'll see those events a little bit differently.

God bless Sarah.

It's emotional , but life is.

2010 is almost more important and even a precondition for 2012, She knows that and now she's not held down.

We'll advance in another direction.

Yogi41 July 4, 2009 7:50 AM

Reading a lot of these posts from supporters who are now saying she's blown it, reading other blogs and listening to pundits who say the same thing really got me thinking how much we've been programmed to believe in the political process. Most people really do believe that there's only one way to effect change in our government and that's from the inside or by having a title. Sarah Palin is attempting to change this through citizenry.

And luckily for her, there are literally millions of untapped Americans out there who will be open to her message of reforming government when she approaches them as a citizen and a patriot who wants to restore our principles.

There are approximately 197 million registered voters out there. Of that amount, only 130 million voted in '08. 67 million felt uninspired or apathetic to not vote. Of the 130 million who did vote, many are right now scared and disgusted of where this country is heading.

My guess is, Sarah Palin is speaking to those people and those are the ones she is going to attempt to sway with her message of conservatism and reform.

There will always be those who will say she cannot do it because it's never been done. There will be those, even here on this blog, who will wring their hands and state their belief that someone who stepped down to take on a much bigger fight will never have the same clout and influence because she doesn't have a title of Governor. Hogwash.

As citizen Sarah, her appeal and influence will grow even larger. Understand that those of us who live and breathe politics are in the minority; there is a much larger American populace who detest politics and politicians, but love their country. When Sarah tells them her story, of a woman who loves her country so much that she left her job to fight for it, they'll recognize her as a fellow patriot and welcome her into their fold.

I think the revolution in Iran really effected her. When she saw women and young kids fight so hard for a little bit of freedom, she was inspired.

She sees what is going on and where this country is headed. I'm sure she weighed the pros and cons and discovered the best way to take back this country and wrestle the power away from the federal government is to fight alongside the American people instead of fight alongside a cowardly group of politicians.

We've been clamoring for someone, anyone, to step up and lead. Now that she said "I'll do it", many are dismissing her because she doesn't have a title anymore.

I don't care about her title, I care about the battle that is beginning. I'm thrilled she's taking sides and has chosen to fight with the American people.

She really does walk the walk.

Bravo. Well said.I feel so giddy right now; like someone just handed me back my country.

Although I loved and still love all of the protests and the tea parties and the 9-12 projects, I just never felt the very important message was getting through LOUDLY. We were dismissed as kooks and racists who were interfering with Obama's greatness and his plans to change our country.

Then Palin announces she's taking the fight to them, all of them - Obama, the Dems and the Republicans who are in D.C., and suddenly, things look hopeful again.

MarkRNY July 4, 2009 8:22 AM

Well said Yogi. I think the time for a person like Sarah, willing to buck all precedent at her own risk, will resonate precisely now.

I think there are going to be a lot of pleasant surprises headed our way in the coming weeks and a lot of crow eating by skeptics. She's the most important political figure in the country. Her star's rising as Obama's, the media's and Ivy League, beltway punditry's falls.

I also think she's got a little Michael Corleone in her! (lol). She's going to "settle Family business". Rahm is Barzinni.

Whatever she does, I'm with her. She's just a pleasure to watch in action. Her speech yesterday was a little gem.

ND July 4, 2009 9:08 AM

Maybe Sarah'll practise speaking without telelprompter n notes to show how pathetic Obama truly is. Just don't do it at the convention.

She did a huge chunk of her '08 acceptance speech without notes or a teleprompter because the feed went haywire. She can handle it. We've already seen that.

PEC July 4, 2009 10:03 AM

I will support Sarah regardless of anything, unless a Sanford like scandal comes out and there is no evidence of that.
Is this the end of her political career. I hope not but the answer may be yes. IS it the end of Sarah no. Three things Sarah will forever fight for (politically or otherwise) that we are overlooking.
Pro-Life - THink she is free now to speak as much as she wants on this.
Special Needs Children - She can advocate this full time now.
Autism - Kind of special needs but she now can be an advocate for this.

Some politicians never like to nuture politicians like Parnell because they are afraid of the "All About Eve" effect. Sarah is proud of Parnell and will continue to support him for whatever office he aspires to.

I don't know where to begin. I feel like I have been kicked in the gut and can see the boot headed for the b**ls and cant do anything to stop it. Go back and look at the things that have happened in the last few months.
The RTL speech
The NY fund raisers and speeches, The gas line
The knock down of Letterman, the positive media interviews of the last two.
The change in public opinion change to pro life.
The change in NOW leadership by Palin people.
The Sullivan appointment getting raves.
Winning all those ethics complaints.
The USS Stennis visit.
The trip to Europe .
Even her tweets have been upbeat.
Sarahpac asked for a big push for the reports.
The trust fund got a big boost.

Something very big and very bad happened to Sarah on Wed or Thursday and it wasn't Trig's picture in the rag.I'm afraid we will know very soon.
Only a couple of her aids knew about the announcement only by an hour or so Her biggest gop supporter Malek was only told minutes before the announcement.
They have tried to put a positive spin on this but it is only to temporarily ease the the pain.

Lisa said she has abandoned Ak. I agree but will add a Conservatives and democratic America as well. None of those that are left will beat O. Full blown socialism now has no barriers. It is sad day for

GOD BLESS you and your family Sarah. You are in our prayers.

As for the hateful trolls ("bowels of the plane or beast" or whatever) who showed up late in this thread, they should slink back to whichever hole they came from. Unworthy to stand on the same continent as Sarah, much less comment on her.

To so many other kindred souls (Uffda, Yogi, Mountain Mama, JP, et al.), thanks for your comments. It's the best Independence Day we've had in many years! Sarah knows what she is doing, at least this next step or next several. And she will wait on the Lord as she has done thus far in her life and career, wait for the right doors to open. And when she sees the openings, she will boldly enter, shine, and be victorious. Her life is simply extraordinary, and so is the moment.

This is much bigger than mundane politics and frail human logic.

Happy Independence Day, Sarah. We love you and stand with you.

Ted July 4, 2009 12:31 PM

Thanks to Adam Brickley's analysis and other things I've read and thought about, OK, here's a sum up of 3 reasons for Palin's brilliant (and necessary) move:

1. EXTEND her influence in Alaska ala Parnell.

2. FREED to battle Romney and Huckabee on their own turf.

3. RUN mid-term Congressional elections.

juju July 4, 2009 12:32 PM

I never saw so many people that wanted Sarah out of public office and now that is what she is doing they have to be so unhappy. This gal drives them crazy. I love it.

Sarah is no more a quitter then OBAMA was. He left two years on his senate term to Burris...geezz...give me a break.

Sarah is going to the lower 48 and work for the mid term elections. She knows that control of the congress is the way to stop the OB agenda. That is the important issue right now, not her election to anything. Get the dems out of congress and the senate.

Bill in Baltimore July 4, 2009 12:33 PM

Larry July 4, 2009 12:58 PM

Larry July 4, 2009 12:59 PM

The reasons she will never be president.

First, the timing: It’s not just that there’s more time between now and the next presidential election than has yet elapsed since the last one. There’s more time between now and the next midterm election than has passed since last November. Perhaps never has a presidential hopeful so poorly disguised her overambition. Sure, it’s tough to campaign and govern a state so far away from Iowa. But she could have simply decided not to run for reelection next year. This makes her look incapable of juggling multiple tasks at once.

Which points to a larger problem: judgment skills, or, rather, her questionable possession of such. From her disastrous campaign interviews to her self-aggrandized insistence that she speak on election night to her inability to decide whether or not to speak at GOP functions to her incompetence at handling the press to her gratuitous spat with David Letterman, she has demonstrated a volatile temperament and an incapability to think strategically. As John Weaver, a long-time McCainite, told The Post this afternoon: “We've seen a lot of nutty behavior from governors and Republican leaders in the last three months, but this one is at the top of that.”

All together, the picture is of a politician with obvious abilities to connect to ordinary folks -- but one who is also arrogant, unstable and unwise. Her latest move makes the image even clearer.

Larry July 4, 2009 1:01 PM

1. If you're leaving your elected position with more than a year to go because you can't handle negative publicity, personal attacks and GOP back-biting, how could you possibly handle the rigors of running for president -- much less being President?

2. How can you say you didn't take a "quitters way out" when you just quit?

3. Hillary Clinton, Liddy Dole and Gerry Ferraro had a secondary goal in their political strivings: tailoring their actions and statements to destroy the notion women couldn't compete against men in the political arena. Palin suggested that was her goal too in '08 -- and her defenders never hesitated to cry sexism when she was attacked -- so what does quitting say about her commitment to furthering the image of women in American politics?

4. Is Alaska really ready for a "Mission Accomplished" declaration? The recently announced gas pipeline deal, for instance, is expected to have a major impact on the state. But it's still largely a work in progress with many key details yet to be concluded.

5. How hard would it be to raise the estimated $500,000 you say you'll need to pay for the defense of nuisance ethics complaints when you are the biggest fundraising draw in the Republican party?

johnmd July 4, 2009 1:05 PM

Bill
Anyone is better than taxomally. I don't really follow state politics much just local. The last several elections have proven the eastern shore has no influence at the state level and will never have any. They have gone out of their way kill growth over here and with out it we will never have any political power. We just get their taxes and sludge that contaminates the shallow wells.

juju July 4, 2009 1:11 PM

Larry: Thank you so much for your post. What a bunch of crap. Are you a Romney troll, or one of the AK. ankle biters. You don't know jack s**t. Sarah's main goal right now is to help the Congress and the Senate to be Republican or at least not as one sided as it is now. That is the important thing for all of us that OBAMA doesn't get us further in debt.

Many elected officials don't serve out their full terms, including OBAMA. Once this shock is over, most people will realize that Sarah has done the right thing.

Takes you all out of the picture, big time.

Elections years from now will take care of themselves. OB if he keeps on will not have a second term. Even C. Powell came out against his policies yesterday on CNN. He can't keep this spending up for 3 more years without ruining this country.

Sarah Palin 4ever July 4, 2009 1:13 PM

Larry she did not quit she's moved on to bigger and better things.

She will be the next president get used to it.

Larry July 4, 2009 1:19 PM

I'm not a Romney troll, but he sure isn't a quitter and Pawlenty has a much better temperment to take on Obama than she ever did.

I heard the "she was going around the full court press" analogy and laughed. If you want to use basketball metaphor, it's more like she quit playing because the game was too hard.

Let go of these 4th of July denial parties and face it, quitters don't make great leaders.

juju July 4, 2009 1:20 PM

Larry: You say all those great things (your ego lets you think they are great, but they really are not).

Your first statement gives you away.
You either didn't hear her speech or you are just stupid. She doesn't care what they say about her. She cares what they do to her children and the expense to the state of AK.

She had so much bad press there is only one way to go now that she will be out of there. You sound like the talking points from Romney's camp to me. Bet this is the worse news he has had for a long time.

She will be in the lower 48 drawing crowds that will not surprise us here, but may surprise a lot of people.

Now go tell your little fairy tale to someone that might belive it...we don't.

Many "political observers" in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide open state.

Sen. P is a nice guy, but if he couldn't even get elections to run the right way in his state I don't think I would give him a real good look.

If this was such a smart decision, why was it so abrupt?

Why do it when the entire first string news pundits are on vacation?

Why do it before the 4th of July "Tea Bags 2" parties (when her her biggest supporters are gathered together)

Let's be a little smarter here. ( I wonder sometimes if people know their facts or their just blinded)

Larry July 4, 2009 2:09 PM

I hope you're right. If I'm wrong, I'll eat crow for sure. But, I've studied Presidential politics for years and it just doesn't add up...

It was an almost impossible mission, but in resigning from office with 17 months to go in her first term, Sarah Palin has made herself seem unpredictable at a time when the GOP needs stability and strength.

Let's stipulate that if there is some heretofore unknown personal, medical or family crisis, this was the right move. But Gov. Palin didn't say anything like that. Her statement was incoherent, and at times bizarre. The text, as posted on Gov. Palin's official website, uses 2,549 words and 18 exclamation points. Lincoln freed the slaves with 719 words and nary an exclamation; Mr. Jefferson declared our independence in 1,322 words and, again, no exclamation points. Nixon resigned the presidency in 1,796 words -- still no exclamation points.

Gov. Palin's official announcement that she is resigning as chief executive of the great state of Alaska had all the no depth and gravitas. It was more like "I'm tired of this sh** and I'm outta here"

She writes, "I promised efficiencies and effectiveness!?" Was she exclaiming or questioning?

I'm no Romney troll, just a guy who was struck by Palin's spectacularly rambling and infantile prose. It bespeaks a rambling and infantile mind. But perhaps not. Maybe she's trying to throw us off the trail.

We will know. In the fullness of time (and I predict, not much time) we will know. Again and again in her statement, Gov. Palin returned to the nettlesome ethics inquiries that have been visited upon her since she signed on to be John McCain's running mate. No doubt they are annoying. But does anyone believe that's why she's resigning? No, there's more to this story. And Ms. Palin's resignation only increases the chances that we will all know the rest of the story soon. Or, as she might put it:

We will all KNOW the "rest of the Story" *((SOON!))*

Sarah Palin 4ever July 4, 2009 2:17 PM

JohnDoeAt30Below July 4, 2009 2:26 PM

Larry, that whole SBS story is baloney. Note, for example, that Palin ran for Governor in 2006, not 2002. She ran for Lt Gov in 2002 and got beat.

Oh and SBS is a Ski-Doo dealer ...... why would they want to help an Arctic Cat rider with an unemployed wife?

Larry July 4, 2009 2:30 PM

Nation Stage since August and has already resigned her Governorship.

She was cleared of every ethic complaint except one.

But cares about ethic complaints, that's the political standard for a rising star.

Federal investigation is a WHOLE other matter. There are confirmed reports that there is indeed a Federal investigation going on. If the Wasilla investigation turns into indictments, she'll be forced to be silent. Hence, her 2,549 worded (abrupt) resignation speech.

Sorry I had to say it, but folks must be prepared.

Whoa, Baby! July 4, 2009 2:41 PM

Your loyalty is truly commendable, but wake up and smell the coffee. I'm wondering what your take will be if the rumor is true and she comes under criminal indictment. I'm guessing you will still be loyal, which again is commendable. However, what if she is convicted? What then? Will you try to say it was an unfair trial and she is again a victim? Will you be objective and weigh the evidence even-handedly? Do you worship her so much that you won't be able to see the feet of clay if they are there? Blind loyalty is a dangerous thing. Corrupt politicians need to be seen for what they are and removed, no matter how much we may have been devoted to them.

A troll the other day said this like it was fact, she knew someone in the gov. " Palin's got a federally backed LOAN and didn't report it or pay any income tax on it"...an indictment soon to come down"....DUH... GUESS WHAT...A LOAN IS NOT INCOME.

The person reporting that stupid "fact" was in the know...just like you are. Get a life.

The people who really need to be worried are some of the legislature.
Sarah probably knows where are the bodies are buried.

Just like the one RAM exposed the other day.

Are you guys going to get your money back from Diva. The e-mails won't mean crap when Sarah is gone. There will not be time to process any complaints..What a waste of money that was.

Whoa, Baby! July 4, 2009 3:15 PM

juju, waste of money for those contributors to Celtic Diva? Then it must be a waste of money to SaraPac and the AlaskaFundTrust as well. Oh wait! That would be different....somehow.

juju July 4, 2009 3:27 PM

whoa ...you are stupid aren't you.
Sarahpac is money to be used for her to go to the lower 48 to support congress and senate candidates for mid-terms elections. She will be free now to do all of that whenever she wants to without worrying about more ethic complaints.

The trust fund was to help her pay for her attorney fees in defending the petty ethic complaints.

DIVA'S MONEY COLLECTED is to get e-mails so she could file more complaints. Sarah will be long gone...waste of money. Can you understand the difference...DIVA'S MONEY IS WASTED WILL NOT BE USED FOR ANYTHING...DUH

Of course Diva will have to pay income tax on it and it may affect her disability payments. But, guess it was worth it. Palin just cut Diva off at the knees.

Whoa the difference:

Donations to celtic beast = DESTROY sarah and her family.

Donations to sarahpac, alaska fund trust =
HELP sarah and her family.

SP 4ev. You nailed it on the head.
Sarah is for doing up lifting things and the ankle biters are for doing tearing down things. That is the difference.
