Palin Resigning as Alaska Governor

Governor Palin's press release:

GOVERNOR PALIN ANNOUNCES NO SECOND TERM

NO LAME DUCK SESSION EITHER

Hi Alaska, I appreciate speaking directly TO you, the people I serve, as your Governor.

People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska. Serving her people is the greatest honor I could imagine.

I want Alaskans to grasp what can be in store for our state. We were purchased as a territory because a member of President Abe Lincoln's cabinet, William Seward, providentially saw in this great land, vast riches, beauty, strategic placement on the globe, and opportunity. He boldly looked "North to the Future". But he endured such ridicule and mocking for his vision for Alaska, remember the adversaries scoffed, calling this "Seward's Folly". Seward withstood such disdain as he chose the uncomfortable, unconventional, but RIGHT path to secure Alaska, so Alaska could help secure the United States.

People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska.
Alaska’s mission – to contribute to America. We’re strategic IN the world as the air crossroads OF the world, as a gatekeeper of the continent. Bold visionaries knew this - Alaska would be part of America's great destiny.

Our destiny to be reached by responsibly developing our natural resources. This land, blessed with clean air, water, wildlife, minerals, AND oil and gas. It's energy! God gave us energy.

So to serve the state is a humbling responsibility, because I know in my soul that Alaska is of such import, for America’s security, in our very volatile world. And you know me by now, I promised even four years ago to show MY independence… no more conventional “politics as usual”.

And we are doing well! My administration's accomplishments speak for themselves. We work tirelessly for Alaskans.

We aggressively and responsibly develop our resources because they were created to be used to better our world... to HELP people... and we protect the environment and Alaskans (the resource owners) foremost with our policies.

Here’s some of the things we’ve done:

We created a petroleum integrity office to oversee safe development. We held the line FOR Alaskans on Point Thomson – and finally for the first time in decades – they’re drilling for oil and gas.

We have AGIA, the gasline project – a massive bi-partisan victory (the vote was 58 to 1!) – also succeeding as intended - protecting Alaskans as our clean natural gas will flow to energize us, and America, through a competitive, pro-private sector project. This is the largest private sector energy project, ever. THIS is energy independence.

And ACES – another bipartisan effort – is working as intended and industry is publicly acknowledging its success. Our new oil and gas “clear and equitable formula” is so Alaskans will no longer be taken advantage of. ACES incentivizes NEW exploration and development and JOBS that were previously not going to happen with a monopolized North Slope oil basin.

We cleaned up previously accepted unethical actions; we ushered in bi-partisan Ethics Reform.

We also slowed the rate of government growth, we worked with the Legislature to save billions of dollars for the future, and I made no lobbyist friends with my hundreds of millions of dollars in budget vetoes... but living beyond our means today is irresponsible for tomorrow.

We took government out of the dairy business and put it back into private-sector hands – where it should be.

We provided unprecedented support for education initiatives, and with the right leadership, finally filled long-vacant public safety positions. We built a sub-Cabinet on Climate Change and took heat from Outside special interests for our biologically-sound wildlife management for abundance.

We broke ground on the new prison.

And we made common sense conservative choices to eliminate personal luxuries like the jet, the chef, the junkets... the entourage.

And the Lt. Governor and I said "no" to our pay raises. So much success in this first term – and with this success I am proud to take credit... for hiring the right people! Our goal was to achieve a gasline project, more fair oil and gas valuation, and ethics reform in four years. We did it in two. It’s because of the people… good public servants surrounding the Governor's office, with servants' hearts and astounding work ethic... THEY are Alaska's success!

We are doing well! I wish you'd hear MORE from the media of your state's progress and how we tackle Outside interests - daily - SPECIAL interests that would stymie our state. Even those debt-ridden stimulus dollars that would force the heavy hand of federal government into our communities with an “all-knowing attitude” – I have taken the slings and arrows with that unpopular move to veto because I know being right is better than being popular. Some of those dollars would harm Alaska and harm America – I resisted those dollars because of the obscene national debt we’re forcing our children to pay, because of today’s Big Government spending; it’s immoral and doesn’t even make economic sense!

Another accomplishment – our Law Department protected states’ rights – TWO huge U.S. Supreme Court reversals came down against that liberal Ninth Circuit, deciding in OUR state’s favor over the last two weeks. We’re protectors of our Constitution – federalists protect states’ rights as mandated in 10th amendment.

But you don’t hear much of the good stuff in the press anymore, do you?

Some say things changed for me on August 29th last year – the day John McCain tapped me to be his running-mate – I say others changed.

Let me speak to that for a minute.

Political operatives descended on Alaska last August, digging for dirt. The ethics law I championed became their weapon of choice. Over the past nine months I've been accused of all sorts of frivolous ethics violations – such as holding a fish in a photograph, wearing a jacket with a logo on it, and answering reporters’ questions.

Every one – all 15 of the ethics complaints have been dismissed. We’ve won! But it hasn't been cheap - the State has wasted THOUSANDS of hours of YOUR time and shelled out some two million of YOUR dollars to respond to “opposition research” – that’s money NOT going to fund teachers or troopers – or safer roads. And this political absurdity, the “politics of personal destruction” … Todd and I are looking at more than half a million dollars in legal bills in order to set the record straight. And what about the people who offer up these silly accusations? It doesn’t cost them a dime so they’re not going to stop draining public resources – spending other peoples’ money in their game.

It’s pretty insane – my staff and I spend most of our day dealing with THIS instead of progressing our state now. I know I promised no more “politics as usual,” but THIS isn’t what anyone had in mind for ALASKA.

If I have learned one thing: LIFE is about choices!

And one chooses how to react to circumstances. You can choose to engage in things that tear down, or build up. I choose to work very hard on a path for fruitfulness and productivity. I choose NOT to tear down and waste precious time; but to build UP this state and our country, and her industrious, generous, patriotic, free people!

Life is too short to compromise time and resources... it may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down, plod along, and appease those who demand: "Sit down and shut up", but that's the worthless, easy path; that's a quitter's way out. And a problem in our country today is apathy. It would be apathetic to just hunker down and “go with the flow”.

Nah, only dead fish "go with the flow".

No. Productive, fulfilled people determine where to put their efforts, choosing to wisely utilize precious time... to BUILD UP.

And there is such a need to BUILD up and FIGHT for our state and our country. I choose to FIGHT for it! And I'll work hard for others who still believe in free enterprise and smaller government; strong national security for our country and support for our troops; energy independence; and for those who will protect freedom and equality and LIFE... I'll work for and campaign for those PROUD to be American, and those who are INSPIRED by our ideals and won't deride them.

I WILL support others who seek to serve, in or out of office, for the RIGHT reasons, and I don't care what party they're in or no party at all. Inside Alaska – or Outside Alaska.

But I won’t do it from the Governor’s desk.

I've never believed that I, nor anyone else, needs a title to do this - to make a difference... to HELP people. So I choose, for my State and my family, more "freedom" to progress, all the way around... so that Alaska may progress... I will not seek re-election as Governor.

And so as I thought about this announcement that I wouldn’t run for re-election and what it means for Alaska, I thought about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks… travel around the state, to the Lower 48 (maybe), overseas on international trade – as so many politicians do. And then I thought – that’s what’s wrong – many just accept that lame duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck, and “milk it”. I’m not putting Alaska through that – I promised efficiencies and effectiveness! ? That’s not how I am wired. I am not wired to operate under the same old “politics as usual.” I promised that four years ago – and I meant it.

It’s not what is best for Alaska.

I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is unconventional and not so comfortable.

With this announcement that I am not seeking re-election… I’ve determined it’s best to transfer the authority of governor to Lieutenant Governor Parnell; and I am willing to do so, so that this administration – with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future – can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success.

My choice is to take a stand and effect change – not hit our heads against the wall and watch valuable state time and money, millions of your dollars, go down the drain in this new environment. Rather, we know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time, on another scale, and actually make a difference for our priorities – and so we will, for Alaskans and for Americans.

Let me go back to a comfortable analogy for me – sports… basketball. I use it because you’re naĆÆve if you don’t see the national full-court press picking away right now: A good point guard drives through a full court press, protecting the ball, keeping her eye on the basket… and she knows exactly when to pass the ball so that the team can WIN. And I’m doing that – keeping our eye on the ball that represents sound priorities – smaller government, energy independence, national security, freedom! And I know when it’s time to pass the ball – for victory.

I have given my reasons candidly and truthfully… and my last day won’t be for another few weeks so the transition will be very smooth. In fact, we will look to swear Sean in – in Fairbanks at the conclusion of our Governor’s picnics.

I do not want to disappoint anyone with my decision; all I can ask is that you TRUST me with this decision – but it’s no more “politics as usual”.

Some Alaskans don’t mind wasting public dollars and state time. I do. I cannot stand here as your Governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of Governor. And my children won’t allow it either. ? Some will question the timing. ? Let’s just say, this decision has been in the works for awhile…

In fact, this decision comes after much consideration, and finally polling the most important people in my life - my children (where the count was unanimous... well, in response to asking: "Want me to make a positive difference and fight for ALL our children's future from OUTSIDE the Governor's office?" It was four "yes's" and one "hell yeah!" The "hell yeah" sealed it - and someday I'll talk about the details of that... I think much of it had to do with the kids seeing their baby brother Trig mocked by some pretty mean-spirited adults recently.) Um, by the way, sure wish folks could ever, ever understand that we ALL could learn so much from someone like Trig - I know he needs me, but I need him even more... what a child can offer to set priorities RIGHT – that time is precious... the world needs more "Trigs", not fewer.

My decision was also fortified during this most recent trip to Kosovo and Landstuhl, to visit our wounded soldiers overseas, those who sacrifice themselves in war for OUR freedom and security… we can ALL learn from our selfless Troops… they’re bold, they don’t give up, they take a stand and know that LIFE is short so they choose to NOT waste time. They choose to be productive and to serve something greater than SELF... and to build up their families, their states, our country. These Troops and their important missions – those are truly the worthy causes in this world and should be the public priority with time and resources and NOT this local / superficial wasteful political bloodsport.

May we ALL learn from them!

*((Gotta put First Things First))*

First things first: as Governor, I love my job and I love Alaska. It hurts to make this choice but I am doing what’s best for Alaska. I’ve explained why… though I think of the saying on my parents’ refrigerator that says “Don’t explain: your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe you anyway.”

But I have given my reasons… no more “politics as usual” and I am taking my fight for what’s right – for Alaska – in a new direction.

Now, despite this, I don’t want any Alaskan dissuaded from entering politics after seeing this REAL “climate change” that began in August… no, we NEED hardworking, average Americans fighting for what’s right! And I will support you because we need YOU and YOU can effect change, and I can too on the outside.

We need those who will respect our Constitution where government’s supposed to serve from the BOTTOM UP, not move toward this TOP DOWN big government take-over… but rather, will be protectors of individual rights - who also have enough common sense to acknowledge when conditions have drastically changed and are willing to call an audible and pass the ball when it’s time so the team can win! And that is what I’m doing!

Remember Alaska… America is now, more than ever, looking North to the Future. It'll be good. So God bless you, and from me and my family - to ALL Alaska - you have my heart.

And we will be in the capable hands of our Lieutenant Governor, Sean Parnell. And Lieutenant General Craig Campbell will assume the role of Lieutenant Governor. And it is my promise to you that I will always be standing by, ready to assist. We have a good, positive agenda for Alaska.

In the words of General MacArthur said, “We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.”

What's wrong with actually being ETHICAL and not wanting to be a lame duck and cost Alaskans additional thousands of dollars in legal fees??

People on this thread who are hating on Palin never liked her anyway.

And if you hate her so much, why are you WASTING YOUR TIME ON THIS THREAD?

That's the story of the left's life.

The Aged P July 3, 2009 4:54 PM

mmmmm.......this lady is not your average politician..just watched the vid on cnn. That speech closed one door but opened several others. Like she said she is not wired to be conventional so the usual trolls here had better keep looking over their shoulders. She will follow her servants heart and the future is spread before her so, ordinary barbarians get ready for a ride to who knows where...

Mountain Mama July 3, 2009 4:54 PM

Huckabee is on FOX News now. He's being VERY sweet; how interesting, given how snide he was at times during the campaign. (I like him, but I don't like snarkiness.)

Anyway, he's being nice and saying she faced really brutal criticism. Hmm.... Hopefully that isn't a backhanded way of suggesting she's a wienie or a quitter. Hopefully he really IS being nice. I pray so!

WOW, Sarah has totally dominated the news this afternoon. AS IF she didn't know that would happen!

She is so brilliant! GREAT JOB, Sarah! Now you can relax, write your book, study and read, and travel----without feeling guilty about leaving your job or your family behind! GREAT IDEA!!!!!

LindaW July 3, 2009 4:54 PM

I think she did this so Parnell can be a guaranteed win in 2010.

My heart was racing all morning because of caffeine in the coffee and when I came home to look on the internet. I was SHOCKED!!!

Bless her heart. Love her!!

Mark K. Sprengel July 3, 2009 4:55 PM

Trev,

Oh come on, Obama resigned as Senator to take the job of president, that is a great excuse!

So if she resigned to prepart for a Senate run in 2010 or for President in 2012 you're ok with that? Thanks, that's mighty consistent of you, something that doesn't come often from her critics.

Conservative Cabbie July 3, 2009 4:57 PM

This move is going to annoy the party officials and commentators.

Could this be her plan to run as an independent or as the head of a new conservative party?

I'm not sure she has a home in the GOP now as it stands. I think she is taking a huge gamble that will either end as a damp squib or could be momentous for American politics. She certainly has the charisma to pull it off.

As a British blogger, Sarah Palin has represented the type of conservatism that we sadly miss in my country. So I say Sarah Palin, the first Conservative Party President of the United States.

Gina July 3, 2009 4:57 PM

Actually, DianneP, I wouldn't. You see, I have this notion that it's better to behave with class, dignity, and respect.

TangledThorns July 3, 2009 4:58 PM

Wow, lot's of liberal trolls today.

Anyways, I was on my home and becoming depressed listening to D.C. pundits talk negatively about her resignation, guys like Chris Wallace was very negative but I don't think others like him listened to her. I watched the clip and she made sense about what she'll do next. I'm certain she'll run in 2012 but I would have felt much more confident if she finished her term.

Mountain Mama July 3, 2009 4:59 PM

I love what I believe it was Techno posted on the earlier thread, regarding Sarah's resignation: that he could just HEAR the THUNK of Huckabee, Romney, and OBAMA! HEE HEE!

Okay, but I will hand it to Huckabee: he knows how powerful Sarah is, and he is being VE-ERY careful to be nice to her, in case she needs a nice VP!
;->

THIS IS ALL GOOD today, people! YIPPEE! The race is on, but in the best way: as a relief and INDEPENDENCE for Sarah! WOW, do we love this savvy woman or WHAT!?

wisetrog July 3, 2009 5:00 PM

Why are all these new idiots gloating on here? Where are our old friends? I am still in shock. Hoping its all good.

gardunne63 July 3, 2009 5:00 PM

My prediction is she is contemplating a run as an Independent. That tells me the SarahPac numbers will be HUGE! Note how she did not mention the Republican Party one time in her speech.

She feels as much loyalty to the Republicans as they (the insiders) feel towards her. She know she can outraise them fundraising-wise with her eyes closed.

Are they going to change the Tea Party names tomorrow to the "Sarah for 2012" party?

Hefmier July 3, 2009 5:01 PM

All I can write is that if she wins the Presidency in 2012, then this will become the SHREWEDEST political move in American history!!! Only time will tell though. So, all you Trolls on this blog, do your little dance. However, I would suggest that you not celebrate too much. It might come back to bite you in the butt.

wjshipley July 3, 2009 5:08 PM

Just an observation, this had to be something she was planning for a while. A number of emails came out from sarahpac at the end of June to get the numbers up before the end of the reporting period.

This is not someone winding their political career down, this is someone getting the powder ready for the next battle.

I expect Sarah to be accepting more of those speaking engagements starting in August.

I appreciate that she's honest enough to not draw a public paycheck while she's working toward the next office -- Like Obama, Clinton, and yes, McCain.

Mountain Mama July 3, 2009 5:09 PM

WOW, I'm hearing all of her announcement, finally. She is HAPPY, folks! "All of the ethics charges have been dismissed," she says, noting that it's cost Alaska a lot of money unnecessarily. I'm glad she's so happy. She and her family deserve a break! Bless her heart!

Will Celtic Diva be sending the $6000 back to the people that sent her money?? What a waste. LMAO
No ethic complaints now.

At least Sarah's money was for helping other Rep. in the lower 48 so it will be well spent as we knew it would be.

What are you ankle biters going to do now. No one will pay any attention to you.

georgiapeach July 3, 2009 5:12 PM

I see the trolls are out in force. I hope the "ordinary barbarians" realize that they always react that way when they're scared. Sarah just cut the ankle biters off at the knees. She is no longer muzzled by her responsibilities as Governor, and she can take the gloves off and come out swinging. That wasn't the speech and body language of a woman who has been defeated or "driven out". The Obots saw a SarahCuda that is getting ready to come after them and their Messiah, and it scared them to death. And lo and behold, here they are at C4P, whistling past the graveyard.

The Aged P July 3, 2009 5:12 PM

Hey conservative cabbie - often see you fighting the good fight at the coffee house against Fraser. Welcome - apologies for the infantile noises, someone forgot to give the trolls their Axelrod fix...

"There is SUCH a need to BUILD UP," she says. WOW! I love her optimism; it's so like Reagan!

She wants to campaign for people "who are proud to be American." NEAT!

She just sees a "lame duck status" as boring, and USER! See, liberals? She is NOT a user!

happymullah July 3, 2009 5:15 PM

I think the ethics complainants have been hoisted on their on petard.

Sure...she's not going to be governor anymore. She can't be effective in her role as governor with the constant strain on the state and the staff and her family.

But now she can be more effective than she ever could be as a lame duck.

I think she'll work to help conservatives get elected all over the country, do speaking engagements and be primed for 2012.

Conservative Cabbie July 3, 2009 5:16 PM

Thanks for the welcome. We live in interesting times!

Mountain Mama July 3, 2009 5:17 PM

Okay, Carl Cameron just noticed something terrific: the GOP needs to rebuild itself.

Now tell me, WHO ELSE but SARAH can draw the crowds, hence gather the FUNDS, to help reelect candidates in the lower 48!? I mean, this is BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!

I guarantee Romney is just dying....

Greg July 3, 2009 5:17 PM

Essentially, her resignation does into effect about the time SarahPAC numbers are released. Sarah Palin has never been your conventional politician, which is good, we are sick to death of the cardboard cutouts who pretend to be humanbeings. Look for a huge bombshell when SarahPAC numbers are released. I didn't hear anything in that speech about giving up, shuting up, or going away. What I heard was taking the fight to a completely different level. Now she is free to take advantage of the hundreds of invitations she's received. She got tremendous responses in Auburn, Evansville, Long Island. Look for Sarah Palin coming to a venue near you.

""For 4 months I have been hammering away at this one issue and I know many of you thought I was crazy and I even once suggested the sooner she could leave the Governor the better it would be. I was all but certain she would not run for re-election but I honestly thought she might stay until the end of the 2009.

For those of you who have not read my many posts over the last 4 months here is a summary of what I wrote to argue for this decision:

1)Obama started running for re-election on Nov. 5/2008. Presidential politics is a whole new ballgame. Fred Thompson proved that when he got in late in 2008. Obama already has a head start on any potential GOP contender.

2)Obama will raise $1B in the 2012 campaign. To compete Sarah cannot afford to sit in Alaska from Jan -May 2010 and Jan-May2011 in which she is restricted from participating in partisan politics including national fundraising her others or herself. That would put her too much behind the 8 ball.

3)The logistics of travel from Alaska to the lower 48 and back and forth if Sarah remained governor just not does permit Sarah to run an efficient campaign.

4)Along with #3, I made the point several times no man/woman can serve two masters. Or as Candy Crowley of CNN put it "It's impossible to run for POTUS in the day and age and have a day job."

5) Establishing a campaign infrastructure and organization is a full-time job. Being governor and forced by ethics concerns to remain completely divorced from SarahPAC would be ludicrous for any potential Presidential contender.

5)I have made a huge deal regarding the 2010 midterms. With Sarah now freed up she will be able to assume the role of a battlefield commander in the lower 48 during the midterms, directly help House and Senate candidates to get elected or re-elected and perhaps orchestrate a huge significant shift to where the GOP regains control of one or both houses and thereby stop the Obama agenda in its tracks. I have maintained if Sarah is seen by the base of pulling this off, the nomination will be hers.

6)After effecting this tremendous shift and without a job Sarah can spend her time among these activities:

a)attending think tanks and forums

b)consulting with high-powered politicos, academics and her kitchen cabinet

c)hosting many fundraisers all over America

d)read and bone up in certain areas she needs to be more conversant on

e)reflect on and develop policies she wants to run on

f)do media rounds

g)establish good relationships with GOP members of congress

h)travel to foreign countries

i)reach more people in the lower 48 by being a consistent presence

And she will be able to that now even leading up to the 2010 midterms

7)Once primary season comes and the first debate comes Sarah will be up and ready to compete and with Sarah's presence I predict there will not be many serious candidates standing on the stage with her.

8)Sarah needs to finish off her GOP opponents early in the primary process to give her enough time to unite the GOP and build the necessary GOTV effort to counter Obama and ACORN.

Folks, the decision Sarah made today was monumental. We must stand behind Sarah while she spends her time in the wilderness. With God's blessing she will prevail.""

happymullah July 3, 2009 5:21 PM

Maybe she is planning an independent no nonsense third party?
Thinking outside the box. That' Sarah.
Also the statement "full court press from the national level" is interesting. There may be more Cassiuses and Brutuses than we thought.

"It's not getting done, and I can't make a difference where I am, so I'm going to go around the governor's desk."

"There's no plan other than, as she mentioned, she is going to get out there & she's going to rally behind the candidates that have those ideals and values."

Meg has shot down the NBC rumor, good for her.

Thanks, Gelston and Techno.

Keep this in the positive. Sarah's got a plan, trust in her, as she stated. Meghan Stapleton is on phone on Fox news and confirmed Sarah is NOT buckling under pressure.

Doug (formerly DB) July 3, 2009 5:26 PM

Meg Stapleton on now. It sure sounds like Governor Palin is running in 2012! Meg didn't say that specifically but is sure seems to be her point. Says Palin has been inspired by recent trips. Also says this decision has been in the works for a long time.

Keltic Kitty July 3, 2009 5:27 PM

She hasn't betrayed us. She left her position early just as did your hero Obama.

She's gathering her ammo for a 2012 run.

Al July 3, 2009 5:29 PM

A tremendously shrewd move on Palin's part...

Now she can spend more time with those of us here in the Lower 48!

Now she can finally get in the fast lane of politics...

manajordan July 3, 2009 5:29 PM

Just read the speech. What an amazing and principled woman she is. I am at peace and have been for a while. I trust the peace.

redneckgal July 3, 2009 5:30 PM

Sarah Palin has done the right thing. She knows that these frivlous lawsuits are hurting her state. It is costing the state millions and her family thousands of dollars. She has complete faith in the people she has hired to do there job. Now she can go out and make sure the federal goverment is filled with people that will do what is best for the country and Alaska. This is why I love and respect her. I trust her to make the right choices for her family and the country. You go girl.

Howard Batt July 3, 2009 5:34 PM

What does everyone mean by "lame duck?" Aren't there still a lot of things to be done in Alaska over the next couple of years? Didn't she run for and accept the position of Governor for the full term so she could, as she says, "serve Alaska?" How does promoting "conservatism" help Alaskans with all the problems facing them?

I'm not attacking like a troll - I'm asking genuine questions. It seems to me her decision is selfish if not cowardly. If it's because she wants to run for national office or have some "effect" from "outside" - that's selfish. If it's because she just isn't up to getting the job she ran for done, that's cowardly. Either way, I don't see why Alaskans would cheer her for the decision.

Mountain Mama July 3, 2009 5:36 PM

Man, the trolls are SO desperate to spin this as a hopeful sign she's running.

I admit I was terrified for one moment there that someone/group had threatened her family and she was running away. But immediately I realized: no way; she isn't built like that, and her FATHER WOULD DISOWN HER! (Meaning, he'd be disappointed.)

OMG! Lanny Davis agrees that Sarah has been unfairly attacked! Man, the guy has a heart...

Larry Sabato is suggesting that Sarah is "erratic, unstable, and will resign in mid-term, because she couldn't take the criticism."

Ri-ight.... And if she were still all tied up in Alaska, then she'd WASTE the next year of being able to get more exposure down in the Lower 48!

Techno, your observations are ALWAYS terrific (especially re. Israel, I might add; praying for THEM a lot these days, aren't we!?)------and you were SO RIGHT about Sarah this time!

NOPE, it's a brilliant move to resign now. I AM SO RELIEVED AND HAPPY!

Nick Ayers of the Rep. Governors' Assoc. says that her resignation could be a very positive event! She can draw thousands of people, he says, and it's NOT her "buckling to pressure." WOW!

MAYBE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY is going to get on board with her, now that she's loose and on the prowl!!!!!!!!

Let's not forget, though, that the Republican Party's Old Guard will try to use her to draw crowds, while POSSIBLY dissing her candidacy behind her back. I hope that they will CHANGE this tactic, and instead SUPPORT her.

OH! Ayers says that Palin and he exchanged emails for a few weeks about not seeking reelection!!!!! So this IS a plan to help reelect other candidates. GOT THAT, TROLLS!?

YOU GO, Sarah, you Grizzly Mom!

gardunne63:

I think that Sarah Palin will run for the Presidency as a Republican. She is in the same position as Reagan was in from 1976-1980 being despised by her own party.

But like Reagan she knows that a third party will not work. She will not be able to compete head to head with Romney and Huckabee being not constrained by her job.

The trolls are out in full force today Sarah gave notice: She means to take the Messiah out in 2012.

Remember SarahPAC is full of millions; Sarah is currently supported by 73% of all Republicans (PEW poll) and is a superstar. Her resignation changes nothing.

This woman is refreshing. The word "Integrity" isn't associated with politicians very often, but it fits her well.

Sarah is going to come out swinging in the next year for 2012; and she will be unfettered by the McCain handlers and the Rovian bean counters. She is a woman of principle, who can show more and better results as an executive than our current Pres & VP.

Bill in Baltimore July 3, 2009 5:50 PM

Shocking. Unconventional. Brilliant.

They were talking about SP on WBAL Baltimore right before the news, it was the lead news story, and they it was on right after.

Ellen Saurbrey (sp) (R) lost in a rigged governors race in MD around 1996, she was then on the air after the news and saying good things about SP and debunking this and that.

Did you hear what Sarah said:
"HELL YEAH" we are going to make a difference. Pow !

Did you hear this:
"LIFE is about choices! " Smack !

How about:
"You can choose to engage in things that tear down, or build up"
hmmm . . . Ecclesiastes . . .

"I choose to FIGHT"

"I am determined to take the right path for Alaska
even though it is unconventional and not so comfortable."

OMG, check this one:
"A good point guard drives through a full court press,
protecting the ball,
keeping her eye on the basket…
and SHE knows exactly when to pass the ball
so that the team can WIN"

"I think much of it had to do
with the kids seeing their baby brother Trig
mocked by some pretty mean-spirited adults recently"

" we can ALL learn from our selfless Troops"

Finally:
“We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.”

Don't forget:
Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.
Psalms 126:5

OMG I love this woman.

John July 3, 2009 5:50 PM

What's happening with Sarah Palin is this:

"and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet--a vast army"
- Ezekiel 37:1-14

"But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men;
you will only find yourselves fighting against God."
- Acts 5:39

portlandon July 3, 2009 5:52 PM

Remember when Palin challenged Obama to a foot race in Runners World? Than when Gibbs was asked about the challenge he said “How’s her jump shot?”

Palin just used the point guard analogy in her speech. She’s passing off the ball,..... so she can get to the rim and have it passed back to her for the lay in.

Obama is toast.

Don't forget OBAMA took a leave from the senate to run for the big job and he left 2 years on his term to be served by others. So he only served 2 years in a national position.

So what is the difference. Sarah was honest and has stepped aside now. She didn't leave the State with an absent Gov. like Obama left the senate.

The opposition is in Philidelphia, drinking, partying, giving pip-pips and cherrios. They're also courting the ladies of the town.

While they sleep in their warm beds and sniff brandie, an army of paid mercenaries (Hessians....or you may call them anklebiters) harass and cause trouble.

Meanwhile, the faithful are freezing, unpaid, hungry and tempted to "accelerate their furlows".

These are the times that test men's souls....

spen52 July 3, 2009 6:18 PM

I have so enjoyed keeping up with Gov Palins accomplishments as Gov. And along with her run for VP, it has been very exciting. I think we were all wondering when the next phase would begin. It began today. Maybe not in a way we thought it would. But one of the things I admire in the Gov is her instincts. If she thinks she can do more for the conservative cause outside of elective office right now, then I'm going to take her at her word. If she thinks Alaska will be better served with her leaving now, then I am ready to accept that also. It may take me a little bit of time to adjust to the new circumstances. But part of me is already excited about the new possibilities.

Paraphrase of Gov. Sarah ( I guess I'm going to have to think of something else to call her, future President Palin?): "Politically speaking, if I die, I die. But I will not sit down and shut up because I love my state, and I love my country".

Thank you, Sarah Palin for standing up! Later this month, you may not be standing up and speaking as a governor, but as a true conservative patriot! No matter her choice, I thank her for inspiring me to a greater love for the promises of our country and a greater appreciation of the freedoms we hold so dear. May July 3, 2009, be a new independence day in our hearts. Perhaps it will be a day that marks a new independence from big government and a statist agenda. May it be a restoration day to the words, ideals, and values of our founding documents.

Nancy July 3, 2009 6:39 PM

KentonAK,
You're very kind, thank you.

Isn't it amazing how this lady and basically her family can send shock waves through the political world? There are a few war rooms right now, first of all trying to figure out what she is doing, why she is doing it and what their strategy is about it. She has a plan and they are in reactioin mode. They are going negative and she is happily doing what is right for her family, her state, and eventually, I pray her country.

God uses what is perceived as the foolish things of this world, to do big things. Well, people think Governor Palin is foolish. Expect. Big. Things. To. Follow.

Lipstick July 3, 2009 6:42 PM

I am just going on record as saying that I support Sarah 100%.

I don't care that she resigned. She is the one living her life and knows what she should do. Who am I to question her?

She has a great future. Whether that is as POTUS (I hope) or not I am not sure/ I do know that she will be very successful.

RNC chair? NRA President? A cabinet postion? An Ambassador? A public speaker? A think tank member? An author?

What is most important is that she serves how she feels God is leading her. She said she prayed about her decision. I will never second guess her since she is doing what God has directed her to do.

juju July 3, 2009 6:52 PM

Just think of all the money she can making giving speeches in the lower 48. WoW...with her book deal and speeches, she will have all the money she needs to run for the big job if and when she wants to do that.

I am not sure if this will help her in the long run, although I am hoping it will not ruin her career. I would be crushed if it did. I think it will probably give her enemies more ammunition in the short term, but she's done that before and wasn't broken. Still, my heart has sunk a bit from reading this. When I first noticed it I thought it was a joke, then hoped it was.

Uffda July 3, 2009 7:34 PM

I think it is awesome that Sean Parnell and Campbell are going to be Governor and Lt. Gov.

She definitely left the state in excellent hands. (Sullivan too.)She left the house in very good order. Campbell I've always liked, he's an awesome man and a great conservative, not to mention he doesn't back down.

She tied up all the strings very nicely, and now.....

Uffda. I have no idea what's going to happen next. This is going to be one exciting ride, who knows what's around the next corner. I feel like this was Sarah's final move to take herself off of any kind of chain. She is truly free now. Look out D.C.!

And I love Mark Levin's reaction to this whole thing:

"Palin is running for president, get used to it."

Uffda July 3, 2009 7:35 PM

I was just on her Twitter. I refreshed the page after about ten seconds, and her followers jumped about 30 in ten seconds.

The entire dynamic just changed.

"We have crossed the Rubicon."

Sapwolf July 3, 2009 8:36 PM

People,

I read that speech.

She is bringing the fight to another level. I'm not sure if she is running for 2012 for President, but she is obviously freeing herself up for battle somehow.

The beg question is: will it be under the overall GOP umbrella or outside of it.

This is not the words of someone leaving politics. It is the words of someone going from governor to the national level AND freeing up their time.

Interesting how this plays out, but neither side can celebrate or despair at this point.

If she doesn't run for POTUS against Obama, it is a big plus for him. However, she now is free to attack his administration and policies 100% of the time without even announcing if she is running.

My personal guess is that the SarahPAC numbers may be quite high at $1.5 million +.

And....

WE ALL KNOW HOW SARAH DOES NOT LIKE TO WASTE MONEY.

I have trusted her this far, and believe she has now opened up a new front in the war against Leviathan.

bitterclinger July 3, 2009 9:10 PM

Did I mis-hear her in the speech when she said she would campaign for people of either party, as long as they were good?

Does that mean indie for her? Can you imagine the reaction a moderate (old school) dem candidate would get if Sarah showed up to a campaign event? I've seen a few blog posts lately of conservative dems saying how mortified they are to have voted for O'Zero and how ashamed they are of their party.

A little OT, but Rush said he's been working on something super secret for the last few days and that he hoped to be able to talk about it soon.

Maybe he'll put the EIB jet at her disposal! LOL.

Since he's off next week, I guess we'll have to wait till the 13th.

Stuck in the car a good six hours today, I listened to Beck's fill-in, Laura and Rush. And all of them sounded dismal about our prospects to say the least -- and then this announcement.

Does it seem like the stars have lined up for Sarah in the last few weeks or what?!

SarahPAC numbers and Fred Malek have to figure in there somewhere.

I'm giddy that Zero will have her in his head non-stop. Maybe it will slow down his brainstorms to bring down the country.

Bill in Baltimore July 3, 2009 9:58 PM

Fox is making me puke right now, but it's kinda funny.

a. If they ignore her, we grow stronger quietly.

b. If they attack her, we grow stronger exponentially.

c. If they join her, we grow explosively.

Either way, it sounds like a WIN-WIN-WIN

Also read the Huff post summary on FR (something like that) where they characterized her role as bringing more "retardation" to the White House / Nation.
- THEY ARE SELF-DESTRUCTING

happymullah July 3, 2009 10:34 PM

The recurring phrases she used in her speech: "Time is precious", "not to waste time", "no more politics as usual", "unconventional", "bottom" up showed that this decision had been percolating in her mind for sometime.

Sarah is who she is. Now I see that her decision makes perfect sense. She sees the nation on a path to ruin. She cannot wait until end of her term to help candidates who share her values, regardless of party affiliations.

Her campaign to help conservatives in 2010 is going to be unconventional. It is going to be populist. And she will continue to speak up against Obama's socialist agenda. She will become the voice of the opposition.

At that stage she will be unchallenged for nomination of the GOP.

Another option for her is to set up a quasi political party as a third force. Call it "Conference of Conservatives" that will accept anybody from any party.

Watch her moves next week. Will there be a trip to Iowa? Would she be moving her family to the mid west for logistical reason? (a perfect timing, with her kids out of school)

Sarah is braver than all of us, than all of the talking heads. That we were all shocked initially by her decision proves that. It will also prove that she is smarter.

Im 100% confident she will shine as never before and continue her march for what is right and will make an even bigger difference.

Sarah is blessed with great VISION in regard to the way she is wired and how to use her God given talents and purpose. We are in for an even greater journey of purposeful accomplishments from Sarah.

I couldn't help think after I saw a segment of the speech on Fox that we are witnessing history here. This is the beginning of the unconventional run (God willing)for POTUS For Sarah Louise Heath Palin. Brace yourselves, for this will be unlike anything witnessed before. We will be telling future generations of this moment.

Illinois Conservative (Whitney) July 4, 2009 8:08 AM

This is a huge political gamble! I still do not know what to think! She does not lose my support, but I don't know who's support she will gain from this decision. I'm trying my best not to be skeptical, but honestly, it is tough. Perhaps, especially, as the next year unfolds, I will be able to see her true intentions, and people's reaction. If she decides to forgo politics for the rest of her life, I completely understand, but I will be disappointed. If she decides to do exactly what she said and seek to effect positive change and promote conservative ideals with or without running for president, I will understand, and she has my support.

In the short term, I feel many will critcize this decision as selfish or that perhaps she can't take the heat. However, this may be turn out to be the most unconventional road to the White House. Time will tell. Perhaps in 2012, we will elect a citizen president, not a political president in Sarah Palin.

skiptheobamatrauma July 5, 2009 5:52 AM

"THANK YOU SARAH FROM A 27 YEAR ALASKAN FAMILY. YOU'VE MADE US PROUD AND WE WILL SUPPORT YOU ALL THE WAY." My blog placed on several online discussions follows:

Gov. Sarah Palin's resignation is a great political move for her & our country. Once they thought about it, the majority of Alaskans are actually proud of Sarah Palin for taking first steps towards 2012. This was an appropriate day (Independence Day eve); for her to take some time with her family, focus on immediate strengthening of state and national objectives; all without having her hands tied by holding political office. If Congress and the Obama Team can announce things like the "Cap & Trade Energy Bill" on a Friday; as they have done many other major sneak through bills; then why can't our Governor let the local media know her news first and on a Friday? She also wasn't taking up state time to do it; as she did it on a national holiday and wasn't at work, so no ethics violation. The mainstream media is going crazy with this, like a pack of dogs chasing their tails. Keep on surprising them Sarah.

Our nation is finally waking up to the realities of the Nov. 08 election results and now we want our country back. Sarah is not a quitter, but instead a fighter who thinks outside of the box. She is the square peg that won’t be forced into the round hole; a “complex conservative” (coin termed by my spouse) that both political parties and the media can’t figure out; which is what scares them so much. She may be living outside of the continental United States now; but will end up taking the country by storm come 2012 and move to our country’s capitol.

Gov. Palin gave an excellent speech on Friday (without Speechwriters or Teleprompters); showing intelligence, good eye contact, speaking honestly and directly from her heart straight to the heart of the average American and didn’t require any hand holding (as she writes her own stuff). On the other hand, Obama pays his 28 year old speech writer $175,000.00 (one of the top paid people in Washington) and doesn’t normally do any speeches without a Teleprompter and his personal speechwriter. Think about it. Who is actually the better speaker, based on “their own merit”? Sarah is head of the pack without a doubt.

The mainstream media needs to report ALL statistics correctly and not falsely quote or intentionally misconstrue facts. The "Mainstream American" is beginning to see through the smoke and will now hold their feet to the fire; which is fixing to get really hot. All ethics charges were filed after her nomination for VP candidate and were pushed by the mainstream media’s attack on her and her family. The 15 false ethics charges (cases she has won) have been dropped. By stepping down, she will prevent millions more of state money spent in her defense and wasted time spent by state employees on defending more charges. Not one of them was proven valid, but continues to cost the Palins thousands from their personal budget.

Sarah is the opposite of Obama in so many ways; budget conscious, a supporter of capitalism, honest, supports our constitution, ethical, patriotic, believing in and not wanting to control her country and more. This is the opposite of Obama and multiple other governors & senators who have left their gubernatorial or congressional responsibilities gathering dust, continued drawing a paycheck from the government coffers, and traveling while in the process of running for higher political office. She can now spend days or weeks away from the state and will not do this on the public dime. What an unusual political candidate; a real, honest, hard-working, ethical, middle-class person; not wanting to waste her state’s money. WOW.

C. David July 5, 2009 11:13 AM

ah, appears that my comments were deleted. Just commented honestly on what I saw happening and backed up my views appropriately.

Yet someone in charge of this website feels uncomfortable with dissent. And, like the typical totalitarian despot, they delete things they disagree with, like Ahmadinejad.

This just proves to me that Palin isn't worth much. As a supporter of President Obama, I never shied away from a discussion with those who wanted to critique him.

Guess the difference is that I back someone worth defending.

C. David July 5, 2009 11:17 AM

Look, I know you all are infatuated with with her, but at some point you have to look at things realistically. You guys remind me of the high-schooler who just got dumped but says, "my girlfriend didn't dump me. She's just using this time apart to prepare for an even bigger, better relationship between us! I can't wait!! I looovvvve her!"

Sounds pathetic, doesn't it? Well, that's how you all sound.

This isn't "the most brilliant move in political history." This is just someone who wasn't ready for the big time and was crushed by the pressure who's abandoning the only constituency to ever elect her.

That's not bravery. It's cowardice at worst and selfishness at best."

Go ahead webmaster. Squash the opinions of those who disagree. That's what the fascists do.

Yes, Bill in Baltimore, I know what ad hominem means. I'm a liberal elitist, remember? We're all exceptionally well educated.

For those of you who don't know (and I'm guessing there are a few on this site), ad hominem is the kind of attack Palin made during the campaign last fall: not commenting on the substance of the debate while trying to discredit the other party as a human.

Saying that someone is a terrorist who clearly isn't, for instance, is a primo type of ad hominem attack.

I cut Palin some slack for these, though, as she doesn't know anything about real issues, like what the Bush doctrine is, it's the only arrow she has in her quiver.

Oh, and since I made a comment contrary to the goddess, expect the fascist webmaster to delete it, even though everything I've said is true.

C David,

ok, let's discuss ad hominem, since you say you know what it means.

You call her a coward. I assume that's part for "abandoning" Alaska before her term ends, no ? Combined with "wilting under pressure" due to the onslaught of the ethics charges, yes ?

From merriam-webster on the web:
coward: one who shows disgraceful fear or timidity.
- How is what she did "disgraceful" ? Did you catch her speech on July 3 where she said "we're taking the fight in another direction?"
- you think she's timid ? How about taking on the good old boys in Alaska, a few in Wasilla, David Letterman. That's timid? Give me a break.

Coward ? No.

Let's try courageous, perhaps.
courage: mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.
- it takes courage to venture out into the wilderness, no ? She did the move "for the best interests of Alaska", she puts others first.

Now, let's get to the heart of the discussion, ad hominem.

Apparently we agree that speaking thusly is wrong. But looking at the same facts brings you to one conclusion and me to another.

I assume you are speaking of SP saying Barack Obama pals around with terrorists, no ?
FACT: Obama did pal around with a terrorist, one named William Ayers. Do you dispute this ?
FACT: Security is of utmost concern to the United States, or any nation for that matter.
FACT: No one who supports the United States wants the POTUS palling around with a terrorist, especially one who has not disavowed his actions.
- Therefore, since she was discussing the facts surrounding her opponent, this is patently not ad hominem. Perhaps if she called him a dimwit, something else derogatory. But she did not do that.

Contrast that with your initial parry that I objected to:

"She's a coward."
"You guys remind me of the high-schooler who just got dumped but says . . ."
"Sounds pathetic"
"It's cowardice at worst and selfishness at best."

So, as you discuss your opinion on Sarah Palin, you turn the attention to her supporters and calls us "high schoolers" (with a negative connotation).
- Now, how is that not ad hominem ?

Ball's in your court. Awaiting breathlessly.
