A Politically Calculated Act?
When I agreed to join this site, I knew my job wasn't going to be the breaking-news angle; I just don't move that fast, especially on days like yesterday and today when I'm flat on my back with the bug. If I have anything to contribute, it's more from an analytical angle; but I'll freely admit, the news yesterday of the Governor's resignation knocked me even flatter than I already was. My first thought was, "She's finally decided that the price was too high, and she's giving it all up"; my reaction was one of shame and anger at my own country, that had decided to destroy a gifted public servant rather than accept the challenge she represented.
And then after a while, I read her statement, and my brain started working again. I know there's a lot of speculation about her motives—after all, politicians never tell you the real reason they do anything, right?—ranging from some kind of dirt that's about to come out (that offered gleefully by a high-school friend of mine, a hard-core lefty from way back, who now lives about six blocks down from the Palins in Wasilla) to a serious medical problem to marital issues under the strain of everything that's been going on. I haven't read all the speculation by any means, since I haven't been at my computer much, but I can tell that a lot of folks out there think that this resignation must be (as most political resignations admittedly are) personal in nature, because it doesn't make any political sense. With the case of Mark Sanford hanging in the near background, we're primed to think this way.
On further reflection, though, I'm inclined to think that Sarah Palin's resignation is probably in fact a political move at its core, and a brilliantly calculated one. It's a gamble, no question, but I think the stakes are worth it, for several interlinked reasons—one of which Adam Brickley laid out yesterday with his usual excellent insight. It all begins (and began, I suspect) with a simple, huge question: should Gov. Palin run for re-election in 2010? I've gone back and forth on that one, but I'm on record in the past as saying that she would be better off not doing so, for the following reasons.
At this point, Gov. Palin would have to be regarded as the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012, but a lot of things can happen in four years; if she just rests on her laurels, she'll see others pass her by. She needs to take her position as a leader in (if not formally of) the national party and use it, both to strengthen her own position and to advance the GOP cause. To do this, of course, she needs to keep herself out there as a national politician. . . .
There are several ways by which she can do this. One, as Adam Brickley notes, is to do her job as Governor of Alaska, and in particular to do everything possible to expedite the building of the natural-gas pipeline. This, combined with intelligent national advocacy of drilling in ANWR, will serve to strengthen the country both domestically and in its international position, to strengthen the identification of the national GOP with domestic energy production and energy independence, and also to help her maintain a high national profile as a conservative reformer who gets things done.
Another thought Adam had, which hadn't occurred to me, would be for Gov. Palin to establish a PAC and do fundraising for national Republican candidates for 2010. By doing this, she could give the congressional GOP a real boost two years from now, as well as building support and loyalty among other leaders in the party. Even better, along with sending them money, she could spend time campaigning for Republican candidates across the country, using her own formidable political skills directly to boost their chances. Given that she will be a marked woman for the national Democratic Party in 2010, it might even be better for her not to seek re-election, but to take the time she would need to spend campaigning for herself and invest it instead in other Republican candidates (including, of course, Sean Parnell or whoever would be the GOP candidate to replace her in Juneau). Of course, if she did so, she would need to find another job, but I'll come back to that in a minute.
Now, I also noted along the way (with regard to the possibility of a special election for Ted Stevens' Senate seat) that staying in Juneau "gives the Left two years to hammer her and try to bring her down before her term as governor is up in 2010," and so indeed it has. She's gone back to Alaska and done her job well—but her opponents have found an effective way to turn the job into a straitjacket, and one she's paid handsomely to have the privilege of wearing. They've put her in a position where she gets hit with huge legal bills for anything and nothing, where she's legally restricted in her ability to do what she need to do to repay those legal bills, and where they've found ways to make it very difficult for her to be nationally active. In the meanwhile, other Republicans who don't have jobs have been taking advantage of that fact and doing everything they can to maneuver against her, and to denigrate her in the process.
The biggest arguments, as regards her national political future, for sticking around and running for re-election had to do with the need to go back, do her job, and show that she could get re-elected; with no one really doubting the latter, and the party mandarins refusing to give her credit for the former, there doesn't seem to be much reason why Gov. Palin should want to stay in Juneau after 2010 unless she wants to be a career governor—and given the way the Alaskan establishment has treated her, she shouldn't. The best political move she could make, it seems to me, was to elect not to run, but rather to pursue other angles.
This is where the argument Adam made comes into play, and it's profoundly important. By stepping down now rather than waiting until 2010, she sets up Sean Parnell as the incumbent in that election, greatly increasing the chances that a Palinite Republican (which is to say, a non-Murkowski-RINO-ite impostor) holds the Alaska statehouse—and with the Exxon-TransCanada deal in the bag, she does so at a pretty favorable time.
There's something of a gamble here, that Gov. Parnell will be able to carry the water, but she knows him better than most people do, and she seems pretty clearly to believe he can; while he lacks her formidable political gifts, he also lacks the vulnerabilities she acquired as a consequence of the McCain campaign, so he may actually be able to do an even better job of carrying forward their agenda than she could. At the very least, he ought to do plenty well enough to hold the seat as a proven incumbent.
In the process, his candidacy (assuming nothing crazy happens to remove him) will serve as a test of Gov. Palin's ongoing political clout; and here's where the wider angle of the gamble she's taken comes in. She's now free of the ankle-biters; they've been using the ethics law she brought into being as a tool for political persecution, and they've now lost that lever on her. She's much freer to raise funds, to speak, to write, and to campaign around the country on behalf of causes and candidates without having to worry that she'll be accused of ethics violations for doing so.
Indeed, it seems likely that anyone with aspirations for 2012 will need to spend much of 2010 proving themselves by campaigning for GOP congressional candidates across the country—and not only would Gov. Palin not have been able to do that had she been running for re-election herself, she might well not have been able to do so even as a lame duck. Can you imagine the ethics charges folks like Andree McLeod would have filed? I'm sure Gov. Palin can; no doubt they all would have been dismissed just as all the ones so far have been, but they still would have cost her a lot of money. Now, she doesn't need to worry about that.
On sober reflection, then, leaving office may well have been the best political move Gov. Palin could have made—and a necessary precursor to a 2012 presidential run, if she wants to make one—and if so, then far better to do so now, when it frees her from abuse of her ethics law and enables her to control the transfer of power, than to wait for the end of her term. It may also be the wisest financial move she could make. Not only does this preclude further attempts to bankrupt her via frivolous prosecution, it also gives her a much wider field to raise funds and earn money.
I suspect we're likely to see far, far more Sarah Palin appearances around the country over the coming months, to prove to people that she's not backing down or going away—since one of the real gambles here is that people will label her a quitter, someone who can't take the heat, and look for someone else to support; she needs to address that if she does in fact want a political future—and to help pay the bills; and also for one other reason, which I addressed in that post last fall:
Gov. Palin would do well to work to win over conservative skeptics like Charles Krauthammer, Kathleen Parker, George Will, David Brooks, and Christopher Buckley—not because their opinions are particularly important, but because impressing those who ought to be her supporters and currently aren't is the most direct way to establish herself as the true standard-bearer of the Republican Party. The best way to do this is to address the current lack of a strong conservative identity in the national party, strengthening it and bringing it back to its roots, and to do so in a way which also dispells the easy caricature of her as an intellectual lightweight. Therefore, as one who framed the troubling challenge presented by Iran with the question "what would Reagan do?" I would suggest (as would Jim Geraghty) that Gov. Palin should ask herself the same question, and do what Gov. Reagan did in the 1970s:Reagan . . . [spent] years in the 1970s mulling the great issues of the day, reading voraciously, and presenting detailed commentaries on everything from the SALT and Law of the Sea treaties to revolutions in Sub-Saharan Africa to the future of Medicare. Then and only then, finally, after 16 years on the national stage, did the GOP give Ronald Reagan its nomination and present him as its candidate for the presidency.
Obviously, she's still going to have her day job, at least through 2010; but in and around that, and raising her kids, I believe Gov. Palin should devote as much time as she can to studying and writing on the great issues of our own day. Keep building her governing experience dealing with the challenges of Juneau—and as much as possible, take advantage of that to use Alaska as a "laboratory of democracy" on issues like health care—but engage intellectually as well with the challenges of Iran and Pakistan, Social Security and judicial philosophy, the future of NATO and how to deal with a resurgent Russia, practical approaches to changing the system in D.C., and what our stance ought to be toward China. Co-author pieces with leading conservative intellectuals—maybe an article on judicial nominations with Antonin Scalia, to throw out one wild idea. Help rebuild the conservative intellectual treasury that was squandered by the GOP during its time in power. And off these articles (and perhaps books), I'd like to see her give speeches under the auspices of the Hoover Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, the Ethics and Public Policy Foundation, the Institute for Religion and Public Life, and other such organizations. If she does decide not to seek re-election at the end of her term, she could go to work for an organization like AEI, or perhaps in the national party leadership structure, and use that as a platform to continue developing and arguing for her conservative agenda.
Obviously, she in fact no longer has that day job, or soon won't; the rest still holds, at least as regards Charles Krauthammer. I agree completely with Joshua Livestro's takedown of Jonah Goldberg (and with VO's, as well), and with all those who've pointed out that Ronald Reagan was similarly dismissed and derided for his intellect; but one of the reasons that the attempts to convince the public that Gov. Reagan, and then President Reagan, was merely "an amiable dunce" failed to stick is that he had a pretty strong record demonstrating otherwise. I agree that Joshua's dead-bang right that folks like Goldberg need to begin with the presumption that Gov. Palin is to be taken seriously and talk with her on that basis; but clearly, that's not going to happen unless they're forced to do so. The only way to force them to do so, I think, is for Gov. Palin to put in the time and effort writing and speaking to make their current flippant dismissals of her clearly untenable. I think that's an important thing for her to do, not only for her own political future, but for the future of the party, for the reasons I laid out in the quote above. And, sadly, she wasn't going to be able to do it shackled to the statehouse in Juneau. Her enemies in Alaska had made that impossible. To spread her wings and fly, she needed to leave office.
And so she has; and I'm reminded of an image one of my mentors, the Rev. Ben Patterson, used in a sermon one time. He talked about being up in the Rockies, looking out across a mountain canyon, and seeing a bald eagle hurl itself from its perch high atop the canyon wall, wings and head pulled into a tight ball. He saw the eagle tumble down into the depths at dizzying speed, apparently doing nothing to protect itself . . . until suddenly, well below them, it snapped its wings out and began to soar. With no wind in the canyon, it had used its own fall to generate the momentum it needed to fly.
That, I think, is what Gov. Palin just did. The risk to it is real, for she's thrown herself into the canyon of our political cynicism, where nothing surprising any politician does is ever innocent—we know better, they're all guilty until proven guilty. All the folks who got egg on their face defending Mark Sanford just underscore the point; many, many people, even those predisposed favorably toward Gov. Palin, are going to assume that there's another shoe to drop in her case just as there was in Gov. Sanford's, and it's going to take a fair bit of time for her to overcome that. There's a lot of shock here—I know, I'm still recovering from it—and I expect a lot of people feel burned; it will take time for her to rebuild trust. She has the political and intellectual gifts to do it, given that time and effort on her part—but she'll need those of us who've found her to be a beacon of hope in our country's politics to continue to believe in her and support her, and to continue to trust her judgment.
We have good reason to do so. Just hang on; it's going to be a bumpy ride, no doubt (has it ever been otherwise?), but I think it's going somewhere good. And for my part, I continue to believe that Gov. Palin is walking with God and seeking his will, and so I trust that I see His hand in this, for her good, for the good of her family, and for the good of this nation. Don't give up hope. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.

Amen.
Amen.
Well said, Rob. Thank you.

My emotions are still all over the place. It's so hard for me to think of her as a private citizen, she's been governor to me this whole time...
It's this kinda of limbo thing that's the tough part. Not fully out of one place, but not yet fully in another. I'm shaking my head with amazement and anticipation. We are indeed in for quite a ride.
I do love how alot of liberals are celebrating this as if this means that Palin is over. It cracks me up because, I think, they will look back and rue this day. The day they thought they had her beat, was in fact the day that she beat them. They just don't know it yet.
Fantastic post!
I will stand by Sarah Palin until the end. What I saw yesterday was the most dramatic display of courage I have ever seen. I have never been more proud to be a Sarah supporter.
Sarah, I trust you.
I really hope this is the case. I think this decision has to be either a disaster or a brilliant maneuver we do not understand yet.
Only a very few instances in US political history individuals has managed to make unusual and rather erratical moves and become president.
If Sarah still wants to become president and this move was just a calculated and risky political move, it would count as one of those instnaces.
Richard Nixon was a mess in his debate with John F. Kennedy. He lost. But several years later he cameback with one of the biggest general elections wins in US history.
So let's give Sarah Palin the benefit of the doubt. She might prove she is the most brilliant politician this nation ever had.
We will see in a little more than a year from now!
Well said.
very well written article. great job of getting your point across.
The left would call her a quitter where she left office now or whether she choose not to run for re-election. They will always seek out the cup is half empty point of view about thei opponents.
I honestly think she is focusing on 2010 right now. She'll think about 2012 after this next round of elections.
Also, Sarah Palin is someone who has a true servant's heart. In other words, where she can do the most good is where she wants to be.
Upinak mentioned months ago that when Sarah went to Evansville, it looked like she was going home. I think that she has done all she can for Alaska. Now it's time to do all she can somewhere else.
And look, Obama is going to be ridiculously hard to beat anyway you slice it, so she might as well let the chips fall where they may.
If she gets anywhere, it is going to be the way she has always gotten places: by winning the trust and the hearts of the people. That is something the pundits will never understand.
Excellent post! Thanks.
Great post!
I love your eagle analogy. Great post.
I'm with Uffda. I think she's thinking about 2010 and making certain conservatives get elected to office and NOT moderates. That is why she said she'll help anyone who wants to serve, regardless of party affiliation. She means that. If the candidate is a conservative Democrat over a moderate Republican, she will support the conservative Democrat.
But she also asked that others get involved and start running for office. I think she wants more citizens running rather than the same old political class.
The chasm between the political class and the electorate is astoundingly huge and this seems to gnaw at her. She just wants good solid people in D.C. making common sense decisions for the people of America.
If that means taking out people in her own party, in addition to the Democrats, she's going to do it.
She hated how she was dumped on for not being of the right pedigree and credentials, and I think she wants to change that "elitism" and arrogance that resides in D.C.
New commenter but months long follower of this blog.
Many of my thoughts mirror Mr. Harrison's---an excellent article by the way.
Governor Palin has not quit the battle, only changed the battlefield. Unlike many in this country, she realizes that our Republic is in imminently dire straits at this point in time. Significanat change in the composition of Congress away from Socialism/Statism and toward Conservatism MUST occure in 2010 to put Obama in check now and to set the stage for more Conservative change in 2012. And it is not going to happen with wishing, it is going to require on the ground hard work with help and direction from a Conservative leader. Sarah has put her own political future on the line to be this leader since no one else seems to have the balls to step up to the plate and do it.
I sensed that something was going to happen since her Michael Reagan
speech when she made the "politically if I die, I die" statement. Sarah Palin is a patriot, not just a politician. She truly loves her country and her state, and she knows that she/we can not wait and play politics as usual for results years in the future. Our Republic does not have time, significant change must occur in 2010 and 2012.
I admire this woman more now than I did before for the decision she announced yesterday. She is going to need our support more now than ever before. This is no time for "barbarians" to become linguini spined. Get over your shock, get your heads straight, and put on your working britches because we have a long row to hoe in the next 40 months. With a God guided Sarah Palin, I believe it can be done. Pray for her and our nation.
I will be the first to say she may have giving up on 2012 and despite campaigning for people may have decided to just ride snowmachines in Wassilla. That said. I don't think so and in the end this could be a genious move.
She has years now to go out and speak at rallies. Forget the raising of money she will still draw the crowds (think about it name one politician you would want to hear speak). SHe may top Obama. SHe could reinvent the Tea Pareties. Nobody can rally people like her. Think of AUburn NY. She can go to such towns all acroos the US now. When not doing that she can go back and stay with her family. She does not have to balance budgets, try to get her legislation through, she can do whatever she wants. This could be a true Grassroots movement like nothing we have seen in a LONG TIME.
Oh and name another politician that stepped down from the very high job fo a reason other than a scandal, sickness or to take a cabinent position? There is no precedent to fall back on.
GAMBLE? Yes? Change we can believe in? YEs.
Remember when Rush Limbaugh said she could build the party?
That statement looks pretty prophetic now, doesn't it?
This is the first I've responded to this blog but been reading for a while now. I was also shocked yesterday and been trying to figure it out since then. This am I was thinking about Pres. Reagan and his journey to Presidency. I'm so glad that this was brought up, I think that that is what Palin is doing. Whither it be 2012 or 20016 or even 2020, I do not think we've seen the end of Palin going for the White House! I will be a huge supporter whatever she decides to do!
Great Post ROB!
Im going to BELIEVE exactly what she said... "TRUST ME ON THIS ONE" and "WE ARE NOT RETREATING, WE ARE JUST CHANGING DIRECTIONS".
TRUST was always the magnet that pulled me into her sphere of influence and,WOW, have I been blessed with so much more.
That resignation speech was absolutely a work of ART, just as Sarah is an absolute work of ART.
The words, the way she said them, honesty to her core, heart felt and genuine, I find myself re-listening and learning so much more each time.
We don't get to experience a Sarah Palin very often, doing what is best to assist the bigger goal, as being a point guard.
She has just begun another direction and chapter and will greatly influence all that she endeavors to do.
I can't wait for what's to come ... she said "Im not wired that way", referring to politics as usual, and WOW are we in for a great ride ahead of us.
Lets keep the faith!!
And look, Obama is going to be ridiculously hard to beat anyway you slice it, so she might as well let the chips fall where they may.
==================================
Circa 2009, I would agree
2012? After the economy goes downt he rat hole a few times? Not so sure about Obama's chances.
Just so you know, Team Sarah membership is rising dramatically today...
Unfortunately for the D's, the Division Street Duce won't be able to pull a rabbit out of his hat for much longer. There's only so much the media will cover for him before their natural self-interest begins to take over.
They'd like to protect the Dear Leader, but as the printing presses keep rolling and we head into Weimar We Can Believe In, and he starts losing heavyweights like Warren Buffet and the Chinese, the shine will begin to come off the whole Used Car Dealer scam that the Administration has been able to run.
I take a line from Dennis Miller when she was first announced:
"I think it's going to result in a victory. If it doesn't, I'm willing to go down swinging with a dame like that."
They will try to brand her as a quitter, but I think her decision is defensible. Not to mention, there is a huge grassroots shift going on in this country that she's in on and nobody else is. The pundits will still be talking about how stupid and irrelevant she is as she steps up to take her oath of office as POTUS.
Dave C:
Way to go!
My chips are still all in her basket. And I intend to see people proven wrong.
That's what I'll attempt to do, as long as I have feet.
So is the number of new people posting here.
I was shocked when I heard the news, I was in the city and got a tweet from gov palin. When I got home and listened to the news program and they were saying she was quitting and didn't really say why. I was really confused. But when you sit and listen to her announcement, she was clear as day.
Question - what is the media listening to ?????
She never said she was quitting, she is changing direction. She can do more for Alaska, stepping down from the Governor's office. She had set goals to be done in 4years, she did them in 2 years.
It's no more politics as usual. If I were some people I would watch out, "The Storm" is coming..
Question to her family :
Want me to make a positive difference and fight for ALL our children's future from OUTSIDE the Governor's office?
Of course they are going to say "yes" and "hell, yeah", they are fighters and they never back down....
This is the greatest line
In the words of General MacArthur said, “We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.”
OT: Sarah passed Meghan McCain in twitter followers. Ha!
I am here to say this. I will support Sarah Palin in whatever path she chooses. I trust the Holy Spirit inside Sarah will guide her in all her ways. He will never leave her or forsake her. And neither will I.
My favorite line,
"Only dead fish go with the flow."
Just watch, tomorrow the pundits on the Sunday morning news programs will most likely criticize Palin's motives with a negative tone. Then, late this year in some major elections this year in states like VA and NJ she will bring a huge draw. Then they will change their tune! Palin won't quit on America, I believe in her.
Isn't it funny how she is so over in politics (sarc) and yet there are more people following and supporting her than ever?
I'm so thankful for Sarah. I know she is really going to come kick some arse. She is just the woman to get it done.
Uffda,
That somehow reminds me of a quote from Star Wars: If you destroy me I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.
Excellent article.
I take issue with "winning over" Kathleen Parker, Christopher Buckley and even Charles Krauthammer though. They're not, and never were, a part of the Conservative Movement. The first two are disgraced Quislings and should not be given any further thought. As to Krauthammer and Will, they should now have to win HER over.
Sarah's the "Queen" of the Conservative Movement. She can now take it and retake the Republican Party, not the other way around.
Two things to remember about Sarah, both of which caused me never to doubt that this was the right move--
1st-She will never abandon Alaska and the projects that are in the works. She's going to effectively bring national attention to them now and push them through from "the outside". That removes the talking point of being a "quitter". What she can do for Alaska can now more effectively be done on a national level, bringing national attention to them. I think that's going to be her 1st order of business.
2nd-She'll never let the Left and the establishment Republicans shut her down. She views this as a patriotic duty I think and she's right. I have a feeling this bewilderment on our part is going to turn into belly laughs in the next few weeks.
Please excuse the length of this post from a relatively new poster. It's just that I think a lot rides on this remarkable woman and the way she's been hammered puts me in Man On Fire mode. I'd hate to see people lose heart.
Don't let beltway pundits discourage you--especially weekend, fill in pundits! If the box that they think within didn't exist they'd have to invent one.
Rob,
Thank you for another excellent post!
I wrote, a week or so ago, that I think she could say: "politically speaking, if I die, I die", because she is not scared of any political death here on earth, because she has placed her eternal life in God's hands. This is not about power, or ego, quitting. This is about asking the King of her life, what path He wants her to take. She has not lost eye contact with Christ. She has not lost focus on Alaska. She will never do anything without the support of her precious family.
She truly can take this risk, because she is following God's lead, and has the support of her family. I can understand why she was so upbeat yesterday, she has the best advisors in the world and none of them want a cent from her.
I'm not the brightest bulb on the planet but when not one of the so-called pundits that I have read or watched over the past couple days have not even brought up Reagan's years in the wilderness and even conjecture that Sarah might be following in the footsteps of Reagan's path to the Presidency by spending 40 months in the wilderness I begin to wonder about how disingenuous they are or are they really not as smart as I have always given them credit for being.
Sarah just posted a letter on her "facebook" page! Everyone check it out! Makes me love her all the more!
From her Facebook:
On this Independence Day, I am so very proud of all those who have chosen to serve our great nation and I honor their selflessness and the sacrifices of their families, too.
If I may, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the last 24 hours and share my thoughts with you.
First, I want to thank you for your support and hard work on the values we share. Those values led me to the decision my family and I made. Yesterday, my family and I announced a decision that is in Alaska’s best interest and it always feels good to do what is right. We have accomplished more during this one term than most governors do in two – and I am proud of the great team that helped to build these wonderful successes. Energy independence and national security, fiscal restraint, smaller government, and local control have been my priorities and will remain my priorities.
For months now, I have consulted with friends and family, and with the Lieutenant Governor, about what is best for our wonderful state. I even made a few administrative changes over that course in time in preparation for yesterday. We have accomplished so much and there’s much more to do, but my family and I determined after prayerful consideration that sacrificing my title helps Alaska most. And once I decided not to run for re-election, my decision was that much easier – I’ve never been one to waste time or resources. Those who know me know this is the right decision and obvious decision at that, including Senator John McCain. I thank him for his kind, insightful comments.
The response in the main stream media has been most predictable, ironic, and as always, detached from the lives of ordinary Americans who are sick of the “politics of personal destruction”. How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country. And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make. But every American understands what it takes to make a decision because it’s right for all, including your family.
I shared with you yesterday my heartfelt and candid reasons for this change; I’ve never thought I needed a title before one’s name to forge progress in America. I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint. I hope you will join me. Now is the time to rebuild and help our nation achieve greatness!
God bless you! And I look forward to making a difference – with you!
Sarah
Uffda:
As to your 2 step strategy I would add a third step which turns out to be the first: Sarah needs to build her organization and infrastructure, including hiring personnel and advisors and gets her ducks in row regarding launching a Presidential campaign.
Rino-Hunter:
Translation: Sarah Palin is running for POTUS in 2012.
"How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country."
"I hope you will join me. Now is the time to rebuild and help our nation achieve greatness!"
She's already getting started, and that was what, 24 hours? Hold on tight, here we go....
I'm tellin' ya, the liberals will come to rue this day.
Techno,
I think so too. Especially from this part:
"And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make."
A full broadside at Zero in one sentence.
Ah, that feels much better.
That in-between feeling is gone. We're through the other door now.
Sarah can do more now than she could as Governor for all of us true patriots, to be one of our Founding Mothers of this great new nation that will evolve out of Obama's madness. McCain threw her under the bus, it just shows that the GOP is in the same bed as the progressive left.
She has just fired the first shot in this war Obama and his cronies have started on our beloved nation.
Thank you Sarah, you have shown what a true American Patriot you are yesterday. You are going to have a ton of support from a lot of proud Americans.
Our new Independence day is going to be July 3, 2009. =)
I've been following C4P for quite some time and with high regard. I'm looking forward to seeing, hearing and reading more from Sarah Palin though I'm careful to avoid putting my enthusiasm over all she's done for the people of Alaska first.
As for the gleeful left, remember the Imperial Japanese high command were patting themselves on the back over Pearl Harbor. They'd ultimately look upon that move as a big mistake. Come to think of it, that was after a three and a half year campaign.
First time I've posted since the announcement, and probably don't have much to add. But I was just reading that above Facebook posting from Sarah, and what stood out were the words "it's about country."
She asked us yesterday to trust her, and I do so without reservation. I'm historically a huge cynic when it comes to politics, but Palin has proven she's not a politician, but a true public servant. I'll be in her corner 100% come hell or high water. I can't deny it makes me a bit sad to see her dispense with her 'governor' status, but her reasoning makes sense. Besides, she's pretty much outgrown the office! Now free to champion all across the country her causes like federalism and energy independence, she can accomplish so very much more. And, hopefully help blunt Obama's forced march of the country into Marxist hell.
Phyn,
Good analogy.
Uffda,
Thanks! My props to you and the regulars here that have made this site a great experience.
I look at her and think, "Now that's what a politician SHOULD be."
Does anyone now think that the Governor released statements on Letterman and diva the nut to add more narrative to the reasons she resigned?
Resignation narratives
* She resigned in the best interest of Alaska.
* She now puts the Lt Governor in a strong position to win the gubernatorial election. I am sure that the Lt Governor will follow through with the Governor's agenda now for the state. No longer will the legislators or the left wing extremists have a personality to attack to counter policy initiatives for the state
* She wasn't going to get much of her agenda done in the legislative session with obsessive legislators who are only interested in opposing her on every key issue.
* She feels that she has a higher calling of sorts and the nation needs her before it's too late. This might become her campaign theme...
Can the Governor turn the resignation into a positive?
Is the Governor even considering running for president?
That Facebook message was classic. It would have been so awesome if she had ended with "Let's roll!"
At this point, I'm just happy to be in the horde and along for the ride. Sarah wears me out trying to guess her next move! Nobody saw the resignation coming.
Hmmmm.
Just read the letter on Sarah's Facebook.
Does not sound like a letter from someone who is holding a shoe that is about to slip out of her hand to me.
Does not sound like someone who is beaten to a pulp by the MSM and just wants to be left alone to live a quiet life.
Does not sound like someone who is going to take a 4 to 8 year time off before "maybe" getting into politics again.
Does not sound like someone who would say "I'm goin' to Disney World!" when asked the question..."What are you going to do next?"
Does not sound like someone who is about to sit up in AK and get bored.
Does not sound like someone who is worried that her PAC will embarrass her when the numbers are released.
Does not sound like someone who thinks she cannot really make a bold stand against the socialist agenda of Obama and Congress.
Does not sound like someone who is going to run for the Senate or the HOuse.
Does not sound like someone who's spirit is broken.
Does not sound like someone who is not at least thinking about a run for POTUS.
Does not sound like someone who has quit.
....She has a plan, here is what I think:
1. Change the balance in Congress in 2010. She will work hard to have Obama be defeated in 2010 by him losing the Democratic control over the Congress. Even losing one of the houses puts a brake on a lot of this socialist agenda being crammed down our throats.
2. Make money. Money for herself to pay her legal debt. Money to set aside in a trust fund solely for Trig. As a mom this would be a top prioritity after paying my legal debt. To provide for Trig after my death since he will need care his entire life. Money to put her kids through school and to set herself up to be not filty rich but secure her entire life. (Eat your heart out anklebiters, she WILL be rich). Write a great book, or two.
3.Prepare herself by boning up on national and international issues. Read, read , read. Write, write , write. Maybe learn some Spanish.
4.After 2010, see if Obama is Jimmy Carter and run for POTUS in 2012.
I loved the letter and it made me feel better. She is going to be very visible and use other ways beside the MSM to rally her supporters. She may never be President, but she will make a fundamental change in this country that she can be proud of.
Techno:
I agree with you, but that is longer term strategy. In the short term I believe Sarah has to put together a short term 6 moth SURVIVAL STRATEGY - from now to the end of the yesr. To remain viable in the longer term for 2012 I believe she needs to do the following three things between now and the end of this year:
1) A FULL COURT MEDIA PRESS to: a)simply and clearly explain her reasons for leaving - and keep repeating it until it sinks into the publics' mind; b) she needs to clearly and concisely put forward her message of change and how she wants to implementn it through the 2010 mid term elections; c) she has to clearly communicate that this is about America's future not Sarah Palin's future; and, d) she needs to do serious hard policy interviews to exorcise the Katie Couric demons.
2)SHE NEEDS TO MAKE WAVES. I believe the media and establishments' strategy over the coming weeks and months will be to ignore her and not report on her, to reinforce their view that she is politically dead. She needs to make waves so that they will once again attach her. She wants them shooting at her again, because no body shots at a dead duck - only at high flying ducks. To do this she needs to be strong and cocise in hitting at Obama's weakest points - together with her great understated humor. She also needs to continue to be a thorne in the Republican establishment's foot. For example, strongly endorsing Rubio and campaignimg and fundraising for him against Crist would help.
3)SHE NEEDS TO WIN THE METRICS WAR. Regardless, of how much SarahPAC reports at the end of this month, she needs to equal or outraise Romney over the next six months. SarahPAC's numbers when they are reported on January 31, 2010 will be critical. If she falls considerably short of Romney, she will be seen as dead in the water. Romney knows this and he will be stepping up his fund raising over the next six months to try and bury SarahPAC. Finally, her poll numbers have to show her favorability ratings holding steady or improving. A major regression will be devastating to her. In terms of popularity she must at least come in either second place behind Romney or in third place just behind Huckabee.
If she can achieve all of this over the next 6 months she will be extremely viable for 2012 and the media will be forced to revise their views.
The next 6 months are crucial. She cannot waste a moment in achieving these objectives.
Rusty:
That is why I continually pay you homage and why C4P is such a brilliant web site and worthy of such an exceptional person and candidate like Sarah Palin.
We are all ordinary barbarians and we all have our roles to play over the next 40 months.
Rusty:
Thank God, Sarah resigned when she did. You are right. She will need the time to do what you suggest she do over the next 6 months.
By the way don't forget about CPAC in February 2010.
That is a truly great piece, thanks!
Palin’s move also puts yet more pressure on Obama to finally get some results, as the soaring rhetoric isn’t hypnotizing the plebes like it used to. This week Helen Thomas, Colin Powell, and Warren Buffet all turned on him. Polls are looking droopy for The One lately.
Obama’s porkulus program is a train wreck, all it’s done is bump interest rates and tank the dollar. We are being laughed at by bad guys like Tehran, Pyongyang, and Al Qaida who amazingly turned-down Barack’s timid friend-requests.
Palin could trounce him in 2012, when Americans would vote for the Gipper-in-Heels in droves- while begging for lower taxes, free enterpise, a defense posture with some backbone… an end to the radical nightmare we’ve got now.
Go get ‘em Sarah-
http://reaganiterepublicanresistance.blogspot.com
Rusty , she dont need as much money as Obama. They had less then a sixth of the obama-money and came close.
If she still draws crowds, the primarys will be a walkover .
Remember , Mccain won over Romney , Sarah out crowded Mccain.
Debtstar:
Why takes a chance to be outflanked in the financial arena?
Better to be safe than sorry.
I think one factor in Sarah's decision is the SarahPac #'s. I think they are pretty good although I will not speculate an amount. I believe them to be high enough for Coale and others in the know about the #'s to tell her how outstanding they are when she has done NOTHING to raise money.
She knows when she tries to raise money, she will really rake it in, based on having raised a lot without trying.
Rusty:
I love reading your posts. They are so good. You techno know your stuff.
Thanks for a great article, Rob Harrison. Lifted my spirit, as did Sarah's July 4th message.
I don't thimk she's waiting to see how 2010 turns out. I think she knows now she wants go in 2012. I now think that's what this is all about. The big thing is she needed to more or less put herself on level ground with Romney and Huck in terms of time and freedom. And now she's done that.
Look, despite Obama's falling poll numbers, and no matter the state of the econmomy and the world in 2011 and '12, I think Obama is going to be hard to beat. He's going to have the MSM, no matter wwhat. But the way he could get defeated is by someone like Sarah taking a risk, like the eagle, doing something rather unusual, and giving complete focus to the task over the next 3+ years. You know, that's not all that far off and there's a whole lot to do. No way Sarah could run in 2012 and constantly be attending to the what's happening at the state level in Alaska. Couldn't be done, even by her. What she's doing is clearing the deck for a 2012 run. When she says this decision has been in the making for a long time, she's right, like from Nov 5, 2008.The whole thing is starting to make sense.
Phyn,
To use your WW2 thesis, the Jr Japanese officers (aka: Daily KOS) were pumped up after Peal Harbor, but it was Admiral Yamamoto who knew that the war was lost.
....they failed to bag the aircraft carriers.
....they have failed to bag Sarah.
Gov. Palin would do well to work to win over conservative skeptics like Charles Krauthammer, Kathleen Parker, George Will, David Brooks, and Christopher Buckley
I could agree that she may want to try to get "some" pundits in her corner but Parker and Brooks are both shallow twits that should be ignored as the fools they've shown themselves to be. Buckley is another waste of conservative genetics.
katiejane:
I think it is more important for Sarah to sign some veteran free agents or first round draft picks to represent her interests and be her spokespeople on the cable shows advocating her positions.
It is what it is with the pundits. You cannot change or control them.
But you can control who speaks on your behalf and having them readily available in a timely fashion.
"The sleeper has awakened."
Sarah no longer need weirding module.
:)
Huskers-For-Palin,
A good analogy. Perhaps one day Sarah will even have an aircraft carrier named after her.
She will be at CPAC.
It will be absolutely crucial for her supporters to STORM CPAC with registrations.
We must dominate everything about it.
Mitt? What's that?
katiejane: you'll note in following up my quote, I essentially dismissed everyone but Krauthammer. I think Buckley and Parker have basically crossed the David Black Memorial Bridge Too Far; I'm not as dismissive of Brooks as you are, but I'll agree that at this point he may well no longer matter either. George Will is George Will; he's his own thing. But it would be a great help for Gov. Palin to get Krauthammer and others who really do care about serious conservative leadership to recognize that she is a serious conservative leader; and what it will take to demonstrate to them (at least to those among them who are open-minded enough) will be good for her in other ways as well, so I do not hesitate to recommend it.
Rob H - great article.
me:
just catching up from being away.
got sick when reading the articles about the "pending ethics charges"
Lipstick - thanks for the summary of her Facebook page.
So from her speech yesterday which was a siren call (good) for her, the Facebook page sounds encouraging as well.
With the ethics charges, it looks like we've been over this ground before ? I am not up on this building thing, still soaking it in.
For all of the iceberg announcements, you must first consider the source. So while it made me sick, it also made me wonder.
- Was this a knee jerk reaction on the part of the left? yelling and screaming and then all the MSM simply "reports what's going on [and scandalous reporting of a non-scandal as a scandal].
Being Jewish an observant of the Sabbath I just got this information I couple of hours ago my first reaction: WTF. With the benefit of not following the news for little over then 24 hours (something you guys should try sometime) I had the advantage of not getting the information bit by bit I got, the announcement, the commentaries, Sarah’s twitters , her Facebook letter and all the comments at C4P at once.
So while I am still trying to digest it all. Rob has pretty much summarised it all up. For Parnell to have a good chance to win he needed to run on his own record and not on Sarah’s coat tails hence the reason Sarah resigned now to give him that chance.
But there is more to that.
First until Sarah tells us more no one can be really sure what her future plans are. But IMO I think she IS running for president and resigning now helps her do that in many ways.
She can now freely go after Obama.
She can now freely attack Obama’s Health Care Plan.
She can now freely comment on Sonia Sotomayor
She can now freely position herself as the de-facto leader of the republican party.
She can do all this while not giving the Alaska legislators another reason to sabotage her agenda.
Now for those he say her political life is over. Then why are you still talking about her? With so much going on in the world why are the headlines of T BBC, Sky News, The London Times... to name just a few all about the resignation of a small time Alaska Governor?
In Geraldine Ferraro’s opinion Sarah made a big mistake by resigning because while governor people will take to her but no one will talk to her be being just Sarah? My question to you Ferraro, name one Journalist, politician, world leader who will not pick up the phone if Sarah calls? Only now it doesn’t have to be a matter of public record.
Up until now she was restricted on what she could say or do now she can say or do whatever she wants. If you think the every word she said until now was closely watched as of now every breath she takes will be put under the microscope.
To those who say that she couldn’t stand the heat and got out of the kitchen. I say. Actually she went deeper into the kitchen. All she did is step away from the refrigerator area and moved towards the oven.
Sarah IS running for president. As Bill Krystol said yesterday July 3 2009 will go down as the first day of the 2012 election.
as always, great points.
You guys and gals are truly amazing. How do you do it day after day?
The Old Media and the columnists and the talking heads are not going to like Sarah no matter what she does..
We all know this. We are not going to and should never try to win them over. Like GW Bush or not, I think he understood that.
This is a long & complicated story with a long road ahead.
Gelston:
Not trying to win the favor of the MSM and fighting back are not mutually exclusive.
"THANK YOU SARAH FROM A 27 YEAR ALASKAN FAMILY. YOU'VE MADE US PROUD AND WE WILL SUPPORT YOU ALL THE WAY." My blog placed on several online discussions follows:
Gov. Sarah Palin's resignation is a great political move for her & our country. Once they thought about it, the majority of Alaskans are actually proud of Sarah Palin for taking first steps towards 2012. This was an appropriate day (Independence Day eve); for her to take some time with her family, focus on immediate strengthening of state and national objectives; all without having her hands tied by holding political office. If Congress and the Obama Team can announce things like the "Cap & Trade Energy Bill" on a Friday; as they have done many other major sneak through bills; then why can't our Governor let the local media know her news first and on a Friday? She also wasn't taking up state time to do it; as she did it on a national holiday and wasn't at work, so no ethics violation. The mainstream media is going crazy with this, like a pack of dogs chasing their tails. Keep on surprising them Sarah.
Our nation is finally waking up to the realities of the Nov. 08 election results and now we want our country back. Sarah is not a quitter, but instead a fighter who thinks outside of the box. She is the square peg that won’t be forced into the round hole; a “complex conservative” (coin termed by my spouse) that both political parties and the media can’t figure out; which is what scares them so much. She may be living outside of the continental United States now; but will end up taking the country by storm come 2012 and move to our country’s capitol.
Gov. Palin gave an excellent speech on Friday (without Speechwriters or Teleprompters); showing intelligence, good eye contact, speaking honestly and directly from her heart straight to the heart of the average American and didn’t require any hand holding (as she writes her own stuff). On the other hand, Obama pays his 28 year old speech writer $175,000.00 (one of the top paid people in Washington) and doesn’t normally do any speeches without a Teleprompter and his personal speechwriter. Think about it. Who is actually the better speaker, based on “their own merit”? Sarah is head of the pack without a doubt.
The mainstream media needs to report ALL statistics correctly and not falsely quote or intentionally misconstrue facts. The "Mainstream American" is beginning to see through the smoke and will now hold their feet to the fire; which is fixing to get really hot. All ethics charges were filed after her nomination for VP candidate and were pushed by the mainstream media’s attack on her and her family. The 15 false ethics charges (cases she has won) have been dropped. By stepping down, she will prevent millions more of state money spent in her defense and wasted time spent by state employees on defending more charges. Not one of them was proven valid, but continues to cost the Palins thousands from their personal budget.
Sarah is the opposite of Obama in so many ways; budget conscious, a supporter of capitalism, honest, supports our constitution, ethical, patriotic, believing in and not wanting to control her country and more. This is the opposite of Obama and multiple other governors & senators who have left their gubernatorial or congressional responsibilities gathering dust, continued drawing a paycheck from the government coffers, and traveling while in the process of running for higher political office. She can now spend days or weeks away from the state and will not do this on the public dime. What an unusual political candidate; a real, honest, hard-working, ethical, middle-class person; not wanting to waste her state’s money. WOW.
Mr. Harrison's eagle analogy is so amazing. I strongly recommend it be used by the Palin2012 campaign; as the statement is so profound and the image is now burned permanently into my subconscious. I hope he takes time to discuss this with Sarah.
rob H - IMO Krauthammer is the only one worth trying to convince. I have always enjoyed his political comments and unlike the rest he has not bashed of Palin personally. Even in his put downs he keeps his comments based on logic and never goes for the cheap shot. He seems open to reconsider her based on her actions in the future - the rest of them only want to ingratiate themselves to their fellow twits.
I like the Fox News Special Report. It’s now hosted by Brett Baer who has done an excellent job replacing the retiring Brit Hume. The last 20 minutes or so are a panel discussion with three panelists. Sometimes there are substitutions, but usually they are Charles Krauthammer, Fred Barnes and Mara Liasson. This panel is unique in the media in the respect that it consists of two conservatives and one liberal.
The subject of Republican candidates for 2012 was part of the discussion on July 1. When the discussion turned to Sarah Palin everyone agreed that Palin should be busy studying foreign policy issues to prepare herself if she decided to run. One of the panelists recommended that she send for policy experts to visit her in Alaska to provide a tutorial.
And everyone nodded.
This is the conventional wisdom and it’s wrong. Why should Palin be held to a different standard than the people who won the election in 2008?
for the rest ...
