Sarah Palin Crosses the Rubicon

In 49 BC, Julius Caesar led his army across the Rubicon River. As he did so, he reportedly muttered the phrase "Alea iacta est" - "the die is cast". It was the point of no return.

Sarah Palin has crossed the Rubicon today. It's a gamble of incredible proportions. None of us saw it coming, and we're the most dedicated political junkies you will find anywhere. It took our breath away.

I wish I had the eloquence of RAM, but for now it's fallen to me. All of us in the Palin camp have found quicksand beneath our feet today. Nobody knows what to think.

I'm a man of the world. As most people here know, I'm a military veteran who has flown in three wars. Been in dozens of countries and most states of the Union. I can curse and blaspheme with the best of them. Politically, I'm a libertarian and haven't voted for a GOP presidential candidate since the 80s (aside from an exception I made in November of last year.) I love Robert Heinlein and Ayn Rand. And Sarah Palin.

I'm also a Catholic - my people fled Ireland and came to this country because they were starving and dying - but they brought their faith with them, and despite my worldly cynicism I can't shake it. I was taught to never stop speaking up about your beliefs by my parish priest, who had been imprisoned by Nazis, beaten within a inch of his life over and over again until his body was nothing but scar tissue, and still never gave up exhorting against tyranny.

My political faith in Governor Palin was shaken today - I'm ashamed to say it, but it happened. So I did what this worldly, secular, guy rarely does unless he wants something - I took a knee and said a prayer.

And guess what - I found my rock. For me, it was an overwhelming feeling that I should look to Exodus, always my favorite book of the Bible. (Maybe it's because The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite movie - yeah, I'm hopelessly corrupted by pop culture.) Wherever it came from, I got out my Old Testament and re-read Exodus.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think Sarah Palin is Moses. But, as with so many things, I found a useful analogy in God's word to clarify my thinking. I won't spin off a full-fledged sermon (will leave that to Pastor Rob, or to RAM, who is so much better than me at spiritual matters). But I did see an analogy. Moses was set loose on the waters, and found by Pharoah's daughter. And he lived with them, as one of them, until he could no longer abide the evil that he saw. So he slew the overseer and fled into the desert, building a life for himself and his family until it was necessary for him to return to free his people.

Take from that what you will. Castigate me as some kind of holy roller, but I stand by what I say unashamed.

In any case, Palin has crossed the Rubicon and made her stand clear. She gave us a hint before when she said "Politically, if I die, I die." I think this was her equivalent of alea iacta est. She will now be the anti-Obama, standing up for her personal beliefs, free of the constraints the Alaskan people have placed on her. She is now free of them, and they of her - though I think they will be the ones to regret it first.

As for me, my feet are wet. Because I just waded across the Rubicon, too.

UPDATE by RAM: I was listening to this song today. The words seemed to fit.

techno July 3, 2009 8:02 PM

The one thing that struck me about Mark Levin's comment about why Sarah had to make this move is that no matter how able and skillful Sarah Palin was in doing a great job in Alaska it was not going to make any dent whatsoever in the her perception in the lower 48. She would always face the 'experience argument' no matter how long she served as governor. Thus she needed to get down to the lower 48 to change her perception of her.

I know for you folks in Alaska might find that hard to believe but 'it is what it is'. Don't take what Levin said personally.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere (though, sorry I have read through all the comments!) is that she's been 'offered' something . . . in the way of a Think Tank position, or something like that. I keep coming back to the thought that both Michael Regan and Rudy Guiliani have spent time in Alaska recently, as well Palin spent time with Guiliani in New York. Both are very politically well-connected people. I was as surprised as anyone today but I'm always an optimist and I truly believe bigger things are in store for her.

VO,
Very eloquent. My feet are wet too. And I agree with Rachael. Governor Palin asked us to trust her with this decision. I do. A lot of us, me included, doubt the wisdom of not serving out her term. However, we must realize that Governor Palin has forgotten more about electoral politics than any of us will ever know. We can't possibly know what went into her decision unless we've been there or been her. I, for one, am putting my trust in the decision of this remarkable public servant.

There is word that Sarah will soon embark on a speaking tour (like Reagan) giving paid speeches, but will do free fundraisers and give free speeches for the GOP, and that she is seriously looking at the Presidency.

Expect her to use this time to bone up and do her HOMEWORK as well while she is writing her book.

Melanie, Sarah is headed for the wilderness like Reagan and like Reagan she will be the next President of the United States.

Doug (formerly DB) July 3, 2009 8:15 PM

More than anything else, she understands that she has to take back the party machine from Romney and Huckabee who don't have day jobs and who have filled the party establishment, think tanks etc with their supporters.

She's going to swing right into the action and take back GOP first and then the country.

TangledThorns July 3, 2009 8:18 PM

This is a shocker but this really is a bonus for Sarah Palin and the GOP. Those within the DC beltway can't see beyond I-495. Sarah is free to the raise tons of money for herself and the GOP that she could never of done as governor. She made a political sacrifice to take on Obama who is spending America into historic debt.

wisetrog July 3, 2009 8:19 PM

I was shocked earlier but I am now very happy. Just imagine those tea parties when she is the main speaker.

techno July 3, 2009 8:20 PM

Doug:

I know what went into her decision:

1)She no longer wanted to be a punching bag courtesy of the Obama war room and the MSM incurring hundreds of thousands of debt fighting ethics complaints

2) To prepare for a Presidential run she needed to equalize the playing field against Romney and Huckabee who have their ships in motion so to speak.

3)She needed tha ability to attack Obama on a 24/7 basis and the time to do her homework, build her Presidential organization and basically get her ducks in a row by next summer.

Sarah crossing the Rubicon? Piece of cake!

She asks us to trust her. From the moment I heard her utter her first words; I instinctively trusted her. That is rare for me.

It's obvious Sarah, her family, and the Parnell's have had time to reflect on this decision and made peace with it. I suggest we all take this 4th of July weekend and reflect on what we believe in and make peace within ourselves. Then we can come back on Monday re-energized for wherever Sarah takes us.

Liked your post overall, but as an Alaskan person and supporter of SP, I don't like this particular sentence. Also, she being free of them (Alaskans) and we of her? We Alaskan voters put her in the Governor's office from which she was plucked as VP nom and straight into the national eye.

Without some (most) of us Alaskans, I'm afraid you wouldn't have come to know and love her. I know you didn't mean ALL Alaskan people, right?

Doug (formerly DB) July 3, 2009 8:39 PM

From Mike Allen at Politico:

"Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin plans to remain extremely visible and will give serious consideration to running for president in 2012, but has made no decision, a close friend said after her startling announcement Friday that she will resign her office.

Friends say Palin plans to spend time writing her book, which is due this fall, then promote it heavily when it comes out in spring 2010.

Palin is by far the Republican Party's biggest draw for fund-raisers and conservative events, and the friends say she plans to spend a lot of time traveling in "the lower 48" states, as Alaskans call the continental U.S.

Those friends say she plans to give a series of paid speeches, and will also make free GOP appearances, raising money for the party and for issues. She also plans to help other candidates, collecting political IOUs for herself.

And she'll be very busy as a mother of five, which friends say is her top priority.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney issued a statement saying: "I wish Sarah Palin and her family well, and I know that she will continue to be a strong voice in the Republican Party."

Palin had been considering for months whether to run for reelection and had concluded long ago that in order to be fair to other candidates, she needed to decide by this summer. The idea of resigning outright only came up in the last few weeks, the friends said, adding that she believes she would win if she ran again.

Friends said Palin brushes off hostile news coverage but feels that the ethics complaints in Alaska – accompanied by attacks in the legislature, and the relentless pounding she was taking at home – were taking a toll on her family and her state. So she believes the decision was selfless, the friends said..."

Mary Matalin approves:

Reached by CNN at her farm in the Shenandoah valley, Mary Matalin, a top Republican consultant, called Ms. Palin’s move “brilliant” although she said she was initially taken aback by the news. But she seconded the notion that the governor’s decision was smart in the sense that it will free her up, as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has been, to travel the country to make inroads with potential voters.

Ms. Matalin joked that despite her own initial inside-the-Beltway reaction of surprise, shoppers at her local WalMart in the Shenandoah would be whooping “hoo-rahs” because of Ms. Palin’s continued popularity among conservative voters.

The resignation would remove Ms. Palin, for example, from criticisms like those she received earlier this year when she was forced to cancel appearances in the “lower 48” to pursue her national ambitions at a time of disastrous flooding in Alaska.

Sarah Palin as President accomplishes exactly nothing if the structural problems of our federal system are not fixed.

I predict that Sarah will begin raising money for, and campaigning for, GOP legislators, governors and attorneys general who back the 10th Amendment movement and will take the fight to Imperial Washington DC. I predict that the Tea Partiers will coalesce around Sarah. There is talk Rudy Giuliani is considering a run for NY governor. Imagine a solid phalanx of 10th Amendment supporters elected, and Sarah as President in 2012 to begin the roll-back to the federal government's enumerated powers.

We must stop thinking in terms of Imperial Washington DC. Sarah is important, but the conflict will be won through countless skirmishes at the local level that WE must fight. See you in the trenches.

Some are taking this as a resignation from politics altogether. Posted this in response to another forum:

" For those who are taking this as a resignation from politics altogether - it's not. Far from it. She's broken free of the chains that have bound her to Alaska, kept her from progressing her state and getting her voice out there. She specifically cited the frivolous ethics complaints filed against her, that are costing her family and her state millions of dollars to defend. It has become an unproductive environment. She is "passing the ball... so the team can win." In her own words: "Some Alaskans don’t mind wasting public dollars and state time. I do. I cannot stand here as your Governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of Governor."

To be sure, it's hard to understand this decision. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, and I'm not saying it will be easy to wade through the aftermath. But if you listen to her speech, if you watch her conviction and her strength I guarantee you will trust her to "advance in another direction," as she promised to do.

Palin's spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, on FOX News: "You go play that game, I'll go play it on another court... It's not getting done, and I can't make a difference where I am, so I'm going to go around the governor's desk."

Don't believe what you're hearing. She's not done. Let them all celebrate her "end," it'll be fun when they realize she's just begun.

Glenn Beck: "True about Palin dropping out and stepping down. GOOD. Get out of the system. Be a CREATIVE extremist as MLK said."

I urge you to check out conservatives4palin.com for plenty of discussion, speculation and encouragement about all this. "

Hopefully maybe someone will listen.

These are the same people who had the grand strategies to beat Obama, who like Palin is NOT a typical politician. The typical mold of running/campaigning in the 21st century using 19th century tactics is old and not effective.

Palin has taken the typical mold for getting on the Republican platform, smashed it to bits and stands on the rubble.

This is a new Era in politics. Sarah Palin didn’t just drag McCain across the finish line in '08……she just pulled the Republican party out of the stone age."

Beth Kertulla: "The governor has decided to walk away from us at the very moment Alaskans need her most."

Beth Kertulla's comments are ridiculous!! The opposition from people like Kertulla are one of the reasons why Gov. Sarah resigned and probably felt that Sean Parnell could make more progress during next year's legislative session. Anything Gov. Palin tried to do, people like Kertulla would question her national ambitions. Get a clue, Beth - you are one of the reasons Gov. Palin got fed up!

All, if you haven't read her speech today, you should. Read it slowly. It is a very good "unscripted" speech. SarahPac has it up also.

juju July 3, 2009 9:56 PM

The DC pundits, the MSM, the liberal bloggers, etc. can say what they want, but Sarah will be laughing all the way to the bank. She will make thousands for one speech. She will be a great asset to the Republican
party.

Can I speculate that Governor Palin might be setting up weekly radio time with Rush Limbaugh for oh, the next 3 years? The Sum of all Fears, together putting the fear of God into the left on a weekly basis? Just a thought.

Whatever she does, I will always support her. Buuuttt, I am praying she gives this presidency thing a shot!:)

What's the line from the beginning battle scene of "Gladiator"? On my signal, unleash hell.
I don't think this was that signal, quite yet. I think it was the "hold, hold, hold" call from "Braveheart". (mixing lines from awesome movies, there):)

Governor Palin, you are the only one I will go to battle for, so, whatever is up ahead, I'm following you!

I think Sarah is going to kick ass!
She is now away from the restraint of being governor and can travel to the lower 48 and rally the base and gain support!
She can galvanize the base like no one else since Ronald Reagan.
I support her.
I must say, SarahPAC must have earned A LOT OF MONEY. She has so much support that the beltway nor MSM even realize. GO SARAH GO!!!

juju July 3, 2009 10:08 PM

UPDATE:

Celtic Diva has filed a new ethics complaint stating that Palin's resignation was illegal.

By resigning, Palin has denided employment to the anklebiters as well as DNC "spreading around" money.

section9 July 3, 2009 10:11 PM

I was working this Friday, so I spent much of the day following this event online, and somewhat spottily.

Of course, at first I was shocked and somewhat taken aback by this move. I never expected Governor Palin to resign, but in the larger play of things, this makes some sense. Was she a governor of a state in the Lower 48, this would make no sense, but Alaska is time zones away from the action.

In addition, its Governor lives in a gilded cage of ethics restraints that would keep Palin from effectively campaigning for Congressional Candidates in 2010. Palin cannot advance politically if she cannot do favors for downticket Republicans.

That simply is what it is. So, as was written above, she has crossed her own Rubicon. Well done, I say. This shows measured decisiveness and a willingness to risk everything once a decision has been made to "let the dice fly".

This woman has what it takes to be President of the United States. Today showed me this.

If the Governor plans to give speeches overseas she needs a staff and I hope she has some people in mind.

At this point she has her options open and she might take a long shot at the presidency in 2012 regardless if her resignation will bite her in the ass in the future.

Sapwolf July 3, 2009 10:28 PM

If you see Sarah and the Tea Party Movement begin to close or merge, then expect her to run in 2012 as Obama and the Dems continue to destroy the country's economy.

This is way exciting news.

This is GOOD news.

This announcement is like when Patton was general of the 3rd Army in 1944, when his army was activated to exploit the opening the US 1st army created as part of Operation Cobra, unleasing his armor divisions in their chase of the Germans across France:

"So let us do real fighting, boring in and gouging, biting. Let's take a chance now that we have the ball. Let's forget those fine firm bases in the dreary shell raked spaces, Let's shoot the works and win!"

The beacon fires along Anorien (The White Mts.) are being lit. Sarah is going national and like Gondor calling Rohan, she will be calling us.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6LGJ7evrAg

Sarah heading to the lower 48 will be like Aragorn heading south to Gondor to take up the struggle against the hordes of Mordor.

This could be the last fight for liberty in this country.

She's been called. She will not stay in Alaska and wilt away.

Crazy anklebiters file another ethics complaint against Governor Palin.

This one is for leaving the running of the state to Lt. Governor Parnell.

The complaint reads: What are we going to do now?

What? That's the whole complaints?

Wait, this is just in from the board that handles ethics complaints. Their statement reads: Don't bother.

In other news, Andree McLeod will be packing up her breast cleavage ruler at the end of the month. She says who cares about that anymore, if I can't make Governor Palin's life a living hell, why bother?

Rachael July 3, 2009 10:44 PM

She's seemingly missed the point and thinks that she resigned because "the state was having financial problems" and she chose to walk away from them.

Oh fail.

section9 July 3, 2009 10:47 PM

Carmelo,

In six months, the unemployment picture will be worse and inflation will be much worse and Sarah Palin will be tearing him a new one.

Obama is not a happy man tonight.

The entire Ethics Charges strategy was designed to either keep Palin tied down in Alaska OR force her to retire from politics altogether. They didn't anticipate that she would think of a third option.

They were too clever by half. They should have let things be and see if she screwed up on her own. Now she's going to be able to go out and make SarahPAC flush with cash and come at Obama like a junkyard dog to take revenge for his attempt to bankrupt her family.

The Obama people found out about the Ethics technique when their lawyers came in last year to dig up dirt on Palin. They sent about 30 of them. They understood that Palin was the longer term threat that they had to be concerned with, so they needed a means to keep her tied down (and preferably broke). They also needed local flunkies to file the complaints. Thus, the blizzard of Ethics Charges, never seen before in Alaska history, was born.

Palin just outwitted the White House today, and did so rather smartly, imho.

I think you're right, section9.

She's an independent thinker...a true conservative with a mind of her own and the guts to do what's right even if it's unconventional.

I think she screwed up the left's plans for her to remain in obscurity in Alaska as an impotent governor who has to waste all her time fending off baseless ethics charges.

Like her rep said today on Fox, she saw their block and went around them for the easy layup and they don't even know it happened.

Palin's spokesman, David Murrow, said the governor didn't say anything to him about this being her "political finale." He said he interpreted Palin's comment about working outside government as reflecting her current job only.

"She's looking forward to serving the public outside the governor's chair," he said.

And Pam Pryor, a spokeswoman for Palin's political action committee SarahPAC, said the group continues to accept donations on its Web site, with an uptick in funds after Palin's announcement.

Well, I'm going to say something probably very unpopular with the Alaskans on this site - but you are now losing Sarah Palin - AND YOU DESERVE TO LOSE HER.

She is one of the best Governors you have ever had. She has done more for your state with ACES, AGIA and cleaning up corruption and waste than any other Governor has done. She and her family were attacked unmercifully by the Dems, the media and the nutbars up there - and you just stood there and watched it happen.

Did you ever organize public rallies to support her? Did you march on the Legislature and demand changes to these ridiculous ethics laws? Did you fight for her in any manner, shape or form? A very few of you did - but most of you just stood there and let it happen. Shame on you. You don't deserve her.

I'm sure Sarah would have preferred to stay on for the rest of her term - and then take a stab at 2012. But that would be impossible as the attacks would continue - and most of you would just continue to stand there and do nothing.

As WO says she is now free of you - and you are free of her. And I agree with him, I think she gets the much better of that deal - given the way you have behaved.

She is now free to chart her own course in the Lower 48 and go on the attack. GOD BLESS SARAH PALIN. I will support her in whatever she does.

techno July 3, 2009 11:18 PM

Let me give you my 10 reasons why Sarah Palin told the world today on July 3, 2009 why she made this move:

I want look at this from a long-term point of view:

1)If Sarah had resigned during the Legislative session (Jan 2010-May 2010) she would be accused of upsetting the legislative machinery and being a distraction; now if she announced this around spring or summer 2010 it would interferred with her book tour; yes she could have waited till fall 2009 but that is when her kids are back in school which she did not want to disrupt with cameras and journalists poking around

2)She wanted more time to devote to writing her book or she wanted to sequester a certain bloc of time for another priority which otherwise would have conflicted with the writing of the book; by the way Sarah will now be able to attend CPAC in Feb.

3)SarahPAC is swimming in money and Sarah Palin is personally convinced that she will never have any problem fundraising if she puts her mind to it; couple that with the book deal Sarah will soon by independently wealthy

4) With the exponential increase in her Facebook and her Twitter membership and the recent PPP poll and PEW poll (73% thumbs up from all Republicans) Sarah could see the writing on the wall that she is a major player in the GOP Presidential sweepstakes and remember she was on hiatus from national politics from the beginning of DEC08 to the beginning of Jun09.

5)Sarah is no masochist in terms of watching mounting legal bills due to the ethics complaints but also what many fail to see is the political consequence of these ethics charges consistently been filed: some drones and idiots actually believe Sarah Palin must have done something wrong to have so many complaints filed against her (guilt by repeated innuendo akin to the Big Lie)

6)As governor she would continue to be a sitting duck for the venom and hatred spewed towards her and her family by the Obama war room and the MSM which is not only a nuisance and highly stressful but distracting in terms doing what you really want to do with your time; plus the attacks should become politically marginalizing; being free now of the governorship she will be able to go on the attack against Obama on a 24/7 basis and be a moving target

7)Sarah realizes fully the enormity of building a presidential campaign: organization, equipment, staff, and paid advisors; the sooner everything is in place the better everything will run. Ask Fred Thompson what happens when you don't get your ducks in a row at least a year before the primary voting begins

8)To level the playing field against Romney and Huckabee who both already have their ships in the water ready to weigh anchor and to invest her time in Iowa, NH and SC.

9)to give her ample time to develop a smooth routine or operation while she travels extensively in the lower 48; like a Broadway show working out the kinks or smoothing out the edges before debuting the show on Broadway; and like Mark Levin said on radio today she needs to travel to lower 48 to redefine her image through interviews and personal contact; if she doesn't then her opponents will be left to define it; in addition she would use this time to bone up and do her homework

10) In addition Sarah needs to orchestrate a huge victory for the GOP in the 2010 midterms to give her immense credibility. She will able now to have time to build relationships with party members in the lower 48 to achieve that task and be a battlefield commander on the ground rallying the troops and leading by example

terri July 3, 2009 11:25 PM

okay..I have to get this off my chest.

Do you all think..even for one little moment, that the everyday people who make up her "grassroots" constituents, care one ioda that Sarah quit her governor job up in Alaska?
Being one of those "simple folks" I could give 2 hoots that she quit that "job".
What i care about is someone who loves this country as much as i do and isn't embaressed to say so. One who cares about the military, the people in it and defending our country to the end.
One who cares about God and family and all that goes with that.
I don't care how "educated" she is.
She speaks directly to me and i completely understand what she is saying.
More important, i KNOW that she truely believes in what she is telling me.
THAT is what i want in MY president.
NO MORE LIES!!!
So who cares that she is no longer Governor of a state that to me is is as far away as the moon.
I don't and i think that those "grassroot" constituents don't either.

Rachael July 3, 2009 11:27 PM

I think she needs to reiterate as much as possible that she did not quit or run away, she stepped aside so that Alaska could progress.

With her in that position, things were hampered.

Her selflessness, as even Sean Parnell called it, is being framed by some as her running away. I say tackle that and bury it as soon as possible.

Whoever runs for POTUS from here on out, from either party is going to have to raise one billion dollars (or more) to win. Sarah has to have a tremendous base in place to raise all these funds.

I know I am expanding on a thought someone here mentioned earlier.

manajordan July 3, 2009 11:44 PM

Tim,
I appreciated the Moses analogy. And since you started it, I have another one that I have thought about for quite a while. There was a battle that Israel fought in, where Moses was told by the Lord to keep his arms raised, and as long as his arms were raised Israel was winning the battle. As his arms started to fall they started to lose. They realized what was happening and several of the soldiers were then given the assignment to help hold his arms up. That is what I see as the job of us C4P peeps. We stand ready for the command of where to go to help fight for this country. But, sometimes we are also there to help her hold up her arms. The contributors do that on a constant basis as do the commenters who express their support. We do it by keeping her and her family in our prayers. Keep it up C4P!

I remember posting somewhere that if the ethnics complaints kept piling up that Gov. Palin won't be able to afford to run in 2010.

I'm really going to bed now. Hours & hours of this (let's see, sat down at 3pm, it's now almost midnight...) has left a weird taste in my mouth.

I look forward to hearing more from the Gov soon. I hope we do hear more about this from her after she enjoys the nice weather & holiday in Juneau this weekend. God bless her.

Trolls, keep on keepin' on with your pathetic whimpering about 'housegate' and 'IRSgate' and 'wearereallydesperategate'. We like it.

Goodnight, everyone, don't know what I'd do without you all :)

Rememember and take this to heart,my friend:

The PROUD STATE OF ALASKA (which you detest) was the ONLY state that would have elected Sarah as their governor.
No other state would have given her a chance.

How DARE YOU bad-mouth our state (and the state Sarah loves with ALL her heart...)

Another shoe to drop? Such as moving family to Michigan? Start a third party?
The political establishments of both parties should be very nervous now. This is going to be an unconventional campaign. Sarah has just thrown away all political rule books.

VIVA SARAH!

Kaylynmunro, when there are teenage boys doing a "Palin chant" in formation, and little children singing songs of praise to her, and Evan Thomas is calling her "sort of God," then we'll talk.

wjshipley July 4, 2009 12:01 AM

I had to leave the excitement this afternoon because my wife and I had planned to attend a tea party. This gave me time to think.

I've said since the campaign that Sarah Palin needed to spend the 2010 cycle campaigning and fundraising for like minded Republicans. She can make a real difference and help us get some control. She can also build up allies.

Lately I've been thinking that she really couldn't run again and do a good job at this, plus being Governor and entering the 2012 primaries would make it difficult to do the job well.

So, logically, she doesn't run again. But it's early for the 2010 cycle which will not start up in earnest for a year. Why leave office now. As I thought about it, I considered what I learned about Alaskan politics: the first quarter of the year is the legislative year. If she stays in office much longer, she has to prepare for next year and then follow through. She would be busy until this time next year -- and that's really late for heavy involvement in the 2010 cycle. So, the time is now.

Plus, of course, she can make some money on the lecture circuit and pay the bills, she can openly promote sarahpac and build a war chest. She can take up some of those speaking offers, and do more extensive overseas travel than a weekend.

It makes sense. It's bold and daring, but logical.

LerP59 July 4, 2009 12:02 AM

I am not an Alaskan native, however, my son is stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. With that said, I was sorry to hear your decision to step down as Governor of Alaska.

My son is assigned to the 6-17 CAV currently deployed to Iraq. They are getting ready to re-deploy out of Iraq and return to Alaska, departure date being on or around July 12th. I have no idea if you have plans or not to greet them as they return. I have hopes that you do, and if I got the chance, I would tell you that you have my support if you decide to run for President in 2012. Of which you still do if you so decide.

I first learned of who you were in June 2008 when I saw the hardcover edition of the book, "Sarah" in both the Anchorage and Fairbanks airports. I would have bought it but for the fact that I am not a Alaskan native or resident.

Come a few months later in August I wished that I had. I had told family and friends that I was not going to vote for McCain no matter what. Because of you I changed my mind and did vote for Senator McCain. I believe that if Senator McCain had run his campaign differently that he would be President.

After Senator McCain lost the election he began to say that the Republican Party needed to do this and to do that. I believe, and wrote Senator McCain to say so, that the direction that he wanted the Republican Party to go was the reason that he lost the election. He was leading the Republican Party in a new direction (Democrat Lite) and lost the conservative base of the party. I also informed him that you were the only reason that I changed my mind and voted for him.

Thank you,
Les Perry

One of the cool things about being a person of faith?

We walk by faith, and not by sight.

We trust not in our government, but in God.

We know that when things get crazy, it's never the end of the world, because a great God holds our life in His hands. All things work for our good!

So take heart today. We now have someone, though she may not run for President, who can be the voice of the people without restrictions. We've needed that for a long time.

So while others might feel down...not me! I'm happy! It's going to be so cool to hear her speak for us! And maybe in the process, more hearts and minds may open themselves to conservative principles.

I love...The People's Gov. She'll always be that for me. =)

God bless!

Rusty July 4, 2009 12:03 AM

Techno:

Great piece of analysis. As for the quitter charge, I think that will go away, and I think she can actually use it to show that she took the honorable and courageous route.

Who is more honorable, Sarah who resigned and put her State's interests first, or Tim Pawlenty who wants to use his title, office and state funds for the next 16 months to run for President while putting Minnesota's interests in second place (take that Ed Morrisey)?

Who is more honorable, Sarah who resigned or Obama who missed many Senate votes running for President while trying to be a Senator.

Who is more honorable, Sarah or Joe Biden who ran for reelection as Senator and VP at the same time hedging his bets.

Sarah is a new style politician - with a servants heart - who puts her State's interest ahead of her own interests. She doesn't practice old school politics - that's why she confounds the pundits so much.

The only other politician who had the courage and honor to do this was Bob Dole. He resigned his Senate seat and Senate Majority position to run for President instead of holding on to them in case he lost.

I think Sarah can turn this resignation into a real positive that will resonate with most people as showing her integrety, courage and honor. Something other politicians who run for two offices at a time fail in.

In fact I think one of her platform planks should be to propose a Constitutional amendment that would prevent politicians from running for a different political office while still occupying their current political office (excluding reelection)! I think most Americans would think that is a great idea.

Rachael July 4, 2009 12:08 AM

Juan Williams of Fox News is big into this conspiracy theory that Sarah has got skeletons in the closet. Hey anything is possible but I really don't think so.

Remember I called this months ago and I gave concrete reasons for the move. None were based on a scandal but on the logistics of building a campaign operation and the need for Sarah Palin to show her face on a consistent basis in the lower 48 to enhance her credibility and change her image but also to compete with Romney and Huckabee. As a governor she was hampered substantially from doing this.

Quite simply the pundits knew Sarah was a cinch to be re-elected. Why would anybody give up a sure deal?

Patty Hewes, because they have bigger fish to fry. It's so simple but too simplet for the eggheads in the MSM.

MarkRNY July 4, 2009 12:22 AM

I don't know what some others heard, but that was a fighting speech. "Hell Yes" is not the response to "Should I hang it up and stay home?"-at least not coming from anyone in that family.

I think Levin's hit it dead on (see below). It was a highly ethical and honorable decision too. The people of Alaska were paying a price for the Left's obsession with her (collateral damage). She's left the State in good hands and is going to take the bastards on.

Does anyone really think that this woman and her family would let entrenched power and media cretins (Couric, Tina Fey, etc.) shut her down? For all of our sakes (and I think she sees it this way), I sure as Hell hope not.

This was another bold move by a bold woman. Anything that deviates from the script throws beltway sages into a tailspin. She runs rings around them.

I expect Sarah is just getting warmed up.

I didn't see you commenting here that you were organizing a public rally for her and asking others to attend. I didn't see you attending the Personnel Board meetings to support her and get in the face of Linda Biegel.I didn't see you organizing a petition to the Legislature to change the ethics laws. I didn't see you do anything for her other than lamenting about what was happening to her.

For those living outside Alaska all we can do is contribute to her PAC and legal defense fund. But you live in Alaska - you could have done something more to defend her - and you didn't.

In response to the criticism of Governor Palin 'quitting'...

Wasilla city council, 2 terms but did not finish the 2nd term because she ran for and won the Mayor's seat, and served two terms.

She ran for Lt. Governor nomination, losing to Leman.
When Murkowski left his senate seat to be the governor, he considered appointing Sarah to take his place, instead he named his daughter. He then gave Sarah an appointment on the oil and gas commission where she served as chair/supervisor of ethics of the commission.

She resigned in protest of the lack of ethics of Republicans. Then she filed ethics complaints against Ruedrich and Renkes.

2006 she became governor.

In her resignation speech today, she noted all she and her admin had accomplished in 2 years (not the 4 they thought it would take).

When you are baking cookies and they are out cooling on the rack, you are through baking cookies. You move onto the next job.

This is what she is doing, moving on to the next job.

The next job may be to take care of the current ankle biters, or propose legislation to protect others who find themselves being bankrupted by these twits. I'm sure she has her sights on getting like minded folks into national office to remind BO he really isn't the 'chosen' one.

We didn't desert Sarah, she has been and continues to be in our prayers. We will gladly share her with all of you who are not fortunate enough to live in Alaska.

Don't tell me that because I don't rabble rouse against the anklebiters that I don't support her. Frankly, emailing the current legislators results in 'canned' responses ad nauseum.

Do you not hear the Moose Siren?

I am with terri. I don't give an ounce of bat snot if Palin is guv or not. She has taken enough abuse. She is thinking of her family. She is thinking about really helping our nation. She is betting it all. I would do the same thing if I were her.

Why stay in AK playing games with the petty people in Juneau? She can see the writing on the wall. More of the same, no letting up, Parnell can get her things done. She should not have to spend most of her book deal money to fight silly charges that are false.

So, she decided to go south, to give it her best try. Yea, she may fail, but she will have done her best and most importantly, her children are better protected from these horrible attacks.

I bet Sarah was on the 'Cuda hot line with some interesting people. I bet she has things kind of lined up. I can hear the Moose Siren all the way down here in Texas people.

We all know Sarah has a big mouth. She runs it enough to get in trouble at times. Well, can you imagine how annoying she is gonna be for Obama once she can REALLY run her mouth unfiltered? She can really get out those 'Cuda claws and go to town?

Good grief, this is gonna be great to see. All those whimp GOP guys in Congress are sitting on their butts. 'Cuda's gotta get the job done for them. That "Former" in front of her name is gonna give her major ammo.

All I can say is cover your ears. After Sarah rests up a few days, that siren is gonna be L-O-U-D!

Mountain Mama July 4, 2009 2:31 AM

What a thrilling afternoon and evening, thanks to the savvy and caring SARAH PALIN!

In her announcement, she declared HER independence all over the world! Not ONE other possible presidential candidate, either Democrat or Republican, can command that quantity and depth of press coverage, or such rapt attention from the general population.

Why is Sarah so special? Because she has a sure foundation. It's not just her large, healthy, and supportive family, although they are certainly a huge help to her emotionally and logistically (caring for the children at times, etc.).

Sarah is special also because of her strong faith in God, which undergirds and permeates all she says or does. Yet she does not EVER come across as self-righteous or smug. She's too polite and humble to be judgmental.

More than anything, though, Sarah is honest. She said today, several times, that she really was being open and explaining to the world her ACTUAL reasons for quitting.

Too bad so many liberal pundits just refuse to believe she's telling them the truth! Don't they notice that their skepticism reveals how warped they've become?

I believe that Sarah's honesty is going to teach Americans to trust again, to believe that a politician really IS telling them the truth, rather than spinning lies. That will be THE BEST PART of having Sarah as our president!

I do not mean to offend anyone, either, but I want to make a serious request of everyone here who DOES believe in God:

Please do everything you can to reserve at least a few minutes every day (more if possible, please!) to PRAY VERY HARD for the safety and protection of Sarah Palin and her beloved family. She is taking on people who will stop at NOTHING to beat her----and sadly, I'm not sure they're all Democrats.

Okay? Let's DO it! PRAY EVERY DAY for safety, healthy, and greater faith in God for the Palin family. Thank you so much!

Mountain Mama July 4, 2009 2:34 AM

OOPS! I don't think it's fair of me to write that today Sarah was "quitting." SORRY! That was an inappropriate choice of words.

Today Sarah left one job to take on a more important job FOR HER AND AMERICA: a supporter of conservative, God-loving, America-loving candidates and causes.

She's NO quitter; she's engaged and making a WISE decision.

JennyinOz July 4, 2009 2:43 AM

Just so you know, you are not deaf. The sound of the "Moose Siren" has been heard as far south as Brisbane, Australia and it was LOUD!!!
