Sarah's Smackdown
"If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive." Saul Alinsky, Rules for Radicals, No. 10.
I've been chewing the data of the various polls that have appeared since Gov. Palin's surprise announcement on July the 3rd. Two facts stand out:
1. Contrary to the received opinion of the political class, Gov. Palin's resignation hasn't done any harm to her national approval ratings. On the contrary, she seems to have become more popular since her resignation statement, and this increase in popularity isn't just limited to Southern conservative Republicans. She's more popular with Republicans as well as Democrats and independents, conservatives as well as moderates, men as well as women, White as well as Hispanic voters, North-Eastern and Mid-Western voters as well as Soutern and Western ones (the only two electoral subgroups where she seems to have lost some ground since July 3rd are African-American voters and the over-65s).
2. One one particular issue, she gets overwhelming backing (53-28 in the recent Gallup poll), namely her criticism of the media's coverage of her and her family.
I'm wondering if these two facts aren't somehow related. After all, if people have made up their minds about the media's lack of credibility when it comes to coverage of Gov. Palin (and her family), any further criticism of her actions by that same media is likely to have the opposite effect of the one intended. It would explain why, in spite of a barrage of MSM criticism in the days immediately following her announcement, Gov. Palin's ratings went up rather than down.
It's only a hypothesis, of course, but it seems a plausible one. It would also help to explain this blogpost by two female authors based in, believe it or not, Hollywood and New York City. The authors make it clear that they don't agree with all of Gov. Palin's views, but that's not their reason for writing this post. Their fire is focused exclusively on the media and the feminist punditocracy:
Personally, the whole matter has left me feeling a little like I did at the end of seventh grade, after a year spent passively watching bullies ostracize and pick on one of the only black girls in the school: sick, and embarrassed for us all. As women and mothers, we should be particularly ashamed of ourselves. Women who have participated in this smear-fest have reinforced every nasty stereotype of female bitchiness and cattiness at its worst. Whatever your passionate opinions, whatever your disagreements with her views, this woman and her family were savaged in a manner that went beyond any reasonable standard. She is a public figure, but her husband and children are not.
(...)
Then there is the matter of how the media treated Mrs. Palin's family, especially her children. How sad that normal people may no longer wish to run for or hold public office due to this horrific sort of exposure, including abuse of their children.
(...)
Am I alone in feeling that ridicule of a disabled infant, and rape threats, represent a new low? How intensely cruel and hypocritical this behavior was, coming from "feminists" and "progressives" who probably don't realize how many conservatives they are helping to create, as anyone with a moral compass is likely to figure that, if that's how liberals argue, maybe I'll consider conservative ideas, thanks. No matter how strongly you disagree with Mrs. Palin, this type of behavior is simply inexcusable.
Maybe the MSM have been pushing their lines of attack against the Governor for so long that they inadvertently pushed them past Alinsky's tipping point.

Everybody should email both with the truth. People are lazy and hate to make that extra effort to find the real story.
There may be another factor, namely, that people are getting fatigued and dissatisfied with Obama and the Democrats. The Governor, with her strong differences from those two, suddenly throws light on that fatigue and dissatisfaction. She provides a rather strong alternative.
I think this is true. I'm so familiar with the way the media treats her that now as soon as I see a negative story about Palin, I take it for granted that it's made up or distorted, and when I go searching for the facts, it usually turns out I'm correct.
They've created a "boy who cried wolf" effect. Nice going, libs!
There's a story to relate here. In 1976, George W. Bush and a frend of the Bush family, tennis pro John Newcombe, got pulled over in Maine for a DUI and got hauled in for it. Years later, when running for President in 1999, he got a chance to remark about it in an interview. He chose not to, probably because he thought it was unimportant.
On the Thursday night before the election, a Gore campaign operative leaked the police report to the local FOX affiliate. Naturally, the Gore people disavowed any knowledge of it, but their fingerprints were all over it. There is evidenct to suggest that this DUI story suppressed the Bush vote in the final hourse and allowed Gore to score his popular vote victory.
The moral of the story? Get all the dirt you have in your life out early so the media can attack, investigate, and most of all, INOCULATE YOU EARLY!!! Bush and Rove were clueless and stupid, as we saw in the White House during their term when they never responded to attacks.
What's happening with Palin? The liberals are doing the same thing to her that the Republicans did with Bill Clinton: they are inoculating her. They are in the process of making her bulletproof. Palin is responding, btw, and disproving the attacks, but there are so many and they are so frequent that they have become political background noise and have lost their dramatic effect.
Since she has obviously read Rules for Radicals and has taken Alinsky to heart, she has decided to allow the Left to overreach and make her armor for her.
Their hatred and anger towards her is making her armor so thick that these same attacks against her conducted during the 2010 and 2012 campaign cycles will appear to the public as OLD NEWS, and will be disregarded. Even Tina Fey's schtick will appear dated after a fashion.
Liberals are stupid people. It is best that we leave them in their natural state.
One last thing: do not be surprised if Palin uses Alinsky as a guidebook for her own effort going forward. That would only be sweet justice.
As I have posted before,
- if they ignore her or dismiss her, her followers grow stronger
- if they attack her , her followers grow explosively,
- if they join her, her followers grow exponentially.
I also am sick of the way SP has been treated, and I kept asking:
WHERE ARE THE GOOD MEN OF THIS NATION
WILLING TO STAND UP AGAINST EVIL
AS MANIFESTED IN THE FEEDING FRENZY AGAINST SARAH PALIN?
and
WHERE ARE THE GOOD WOMEN OF THIS NATION
WILLING TO TELL THE MEN OF THIS NATION
THAT WE AREN'T TAKING YOUR CRAP ANYMORE
AND LEAVE SARAH PALIN ALONE ?
As a result of my anger and outrage, I penned the following:
"Imperfect Palin Teaches the Nation", which you can find at
www.info-scroll.com/c4p, look for the link.
I do not think Gov. Palin is done going on the Offensive rather it is just starting. The Thumpin is on it way and I would hate to be on the receiving end. We have not seen nothing yet. Cross Gov. Palin at your own peril.
Hopefully Gov Palin will speak out next week on Obama's attempt to nationalize healthcare.
If she does she could start to gather support among the over 65 crowd by speaking out about the Healthcare's plan which includes
Cost vs Benefit requirements for all major medical procedures for the over 65 crowd. Obama's plan is basically euthanasia for the elderly.
By speaking our on this bill or there is an opportunity for Gov Palin to help defeat this monstrosity of a bill. One legislature has already referred to it as the worst piece of legislation ever in America.
In addition to helping defeat this monstrosity Gov Palin has good opportunity to score some points for herself among the elderly and against Romney whose RomneyCare in MA is the model for the Obama healthcare plan
Palin 2012 - Upbuilding the American Dream
John Galt, I hope so. I hope if she does that this could be a chance to improve her numbers with the elderly who are now her weakest point. I also remember that she tweeted about the elderly being left out of the plan, so she probably is already on top of it.
Off topic here: I sometimes check out the live feed thing on side of this blog. Why are there so many google searches for "Kim Chatman" ? Did she say something just today on Gov. Palin?
You make a very good point in this post. I agree; I think she is pushing through the negatives. Only the real left-wing Looney tunes continue to believe this stuff; unfortunately, one of them is my neighbor and I do not talk to him anymore. He believes that Sarah resigned because there is a major "scandal" about to happen and now probably believes this latest ethics thing is it...he talks really loud on his cell phone while sitting on his deck, so I know how he thinks now, which is frightening.
Joshua,
Thank you for this post and your comments!
section9,
I think you are hitting the nail on the head. Great comment.
Section9
You’re absolutely right. I have always said that George W Bush’s biggest mistake was not fighting back at his critics. Evidently when he started doing his farewell interviews and press conferences where he came out against the media and made his case his numbers went up by 10points in two month. I think Sarah has taken lesson from that.
Obamacare is about euthanasia for older people.
The Guv has a golden opportunity to gain credibility with voters over 65 by combating Obama's attempts to force them into the grave.
She could really be a compassionate champion for them.
She should download a copy of the plan and have her staff go over it and choose the most devastating 10 parts of it and dissect it with an Op-Ed and a BOR or other interview.
otoh, those over 65 stats just don't make any sense to me
My Mom, Uncle, Aunts, Cousins all love Sarah! all over 65 except some of the cousins. (not all of these folks are republicans either)
The only ones that don't love Sarah in my family are my 27yrold daughter and 56yr old brother and one obot far left Aunt. But NONE of them have done a lick of research on her. I'm sure my brother would support her if he bothered to read up.
My kid? doubt it. I keep trying.
I hope Sarah has read some of Ayn Rand's collection of essays in the book "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal".
In one essay "Is Atlas Shrugging?" (published in 1964), Ayn discusses in depth how Great Britain's once-esteemed medical system was quickly being destroyed by the socialization of medicine there. It's really eery how almost every word she writes in 1964 could hold true here if ObamaCare is passed.
The flip side of this is also true. Keep pushing a positive hard enough and it becomes a negative. The unbelievable over-the-top positive press that Obama's been getting (including the soft pedaling or ignoring of his faults) will start to have an increasing negative effect.
SUPER points, Section 9! Let the left do the inoculating for Palin!
Bill-in-B, CodaCuda, John Galt, wisetrog, Sheya, and Sapwolf: EXCELLENT points, all. I am certain that Sarah will address Obambi's health care "plan" soon.
I fear the euthanasia of older folks, and also of disabled folk (we have two disabled family members: yipes!).
Ladydawnelle, keep trying with your uninformed relatives. Some point might eventually penetrate the fog.... We HOPE for CHANGE! (ack, bleah)
Interesting point, Gardunne63, re. Ayn Rand's prescience. Sadly true....
EdFab: the MSM's image and "authority" as "objective news sources" are GONE, for most Americans. Not even liberals view them as being objective: they are GLAD that the MSM is in the liberal tank!
True feminists do not malign men or seek dominance over males. True feminists simply support the worth of women.
Any true feminist is sickened by the MSM's and the political parties' respective (but not respect-FUL) mistreatment of Hillary and Sarah Palin.
I'm NO Hillary fan, but she was screwed over, too. She fought to get her post, and won----but previously she had erred, being too cocky and telling Katie Couric, "I WILL be the winner."
Sarah Palin, on the other hand, is never cocky, but is always truly humble and willing to put her life and her career on hold, if God and her family need her to do so----AND if it's necessary to help the good citizens of Alaska, whom she has loved serving.
OOPS! Re. Hillary:
She fought to win at least the SOS post, AFTER she lost the POTUS post, concerning which she had previously bragged to Couric about being the absolute winner.
Pride goeth before a fall!
Great blog entry! Alinsky's Rules are definitely being used by liberals in attempts to harass and smack down Sarah. I am glad more and more people are seeing this.
