August 29th: Sarah Palin Day; Updated: Joshua Livestro makes a suggestion.

Brianus Berkleianus, friend of and commenter at C4P, had an idea which he left in the comments for this June 8, 2009 post. At 5:29 PM, Brianus wrote:

I am one of many people, I think, who had never contributed a RED (nor a blue, for that matter) cent to a political campaign before the never-to-be-forgotten 29th of August, in the Year of Grace 2008. I would suggest that we have an on-line celebration here at C4P on that day...it is the birthday of true Hope and Optimism for our country...it is SARAH PALIN DAY, in my opinion.

This prompted some back and forth between Brianus, myself, and a few other commenters and, ultimately, one of Brianus’ comments ended up in Rich Crowther’s now legendary “El Rabanos” post, making it official in my estimation:

Campaign Brianus: "I still like the idea of August 29 as THE DAY. Something was born that morning in Dayton, a phenomenon unlike anything we have witnessed in our nation's history. Sarah strode out, to the strains of the "Rudy" theme; she strode onto the stage, and into our hopes, into our dreams, into our lives...forever. We should all give $29 to SarahPac on the 29th of August this year (this was Doug's idea, I believe!!) January 20, 2013 can be PRESIDENT PALIN DAY. 29 August each year should, IMHO, be SARAH PALIN DAY!!"

Eventually, the proper protocol for recognition of Sarah Palin Day evolved to include, in addition to the $29 SarahPac donation, a vintage bottle of wine (or other beverage) of the celebrator’s choice. Brianus will opt for a fine merlot as I recall.

I had heard of Sarah Palin before August 29th. I first became aware of Governor Palin when she won the Alaska gubernatorial election in 2006 which made her practically the only bright spot for the GOP in a dismal election year.

Later, although I can’t recall the exact circumstances or even when, I became aware of Adam Brickley and his efforts to promote Governor Palin as a potential vice presidential candidate for the GOP in 2008. Adam is probably the person most responsible for John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate and for that we all owe Adam a debt of gratitude. Adam continues his efforts through his blog, The Brickyard, and as an esteemed C4P contributor.

For these reasons and others, I hereby nominate Adam Brickley as the recipient of the first annual C4P Sarah Palin Day award. Thank you, Adam. The plaque and check are in the mail.

Two cruises occurred during the summer of 2007 which further lead to August 29th. Two influential conservative magazines, Weekly Standard and National Review had their annual summer cruises, attended by their respective editors, writers, and friends. Both cruises, coincidentally, went to Alaska that year. Many of the attendees met Governor Palin in Juneau and, by all accounts, were quite impressed with her.

Fred Barnes, executive editor of the Weekly Standard, shortly after returning from the cruise, wrote an article, “The Most Popular Governor”, which was probably the first widely circulated article about Governor Palin in the mainstream media. The National Review people were also impressed. In an article for The New Yorker, Jane Mayer wrote that Jack Fowler, National Review’s publisher, noted:

This lady is something special. She connects. She’s genuine. She doesn’t look like what you’d expect. My thought was, too bad she’s way up there in Alaska, because she has potential, but to make things happen you have to know people.

Despite the efforts of Adam Brickley and the positive media she received from the two aforementioned magazines, I personally never thought McCain (who I never liked) would choose Governor Palin. During August, most of the speculation regarding McCain’s choice centered on Mitt Romney, Joseph Lieberman, and Tim Pawlenty. None of those three, or any other names being seriously mentioned, did anything for me.

The only two names I could get excited about were Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindal. As far as I knew, Bobby Jindal had explicitly taken his name off the list a few weeks earlier and Sarah Palin wasn’t even under serious consideration. So, I assumed McCain would pick one of the three mentioned above and lose by at least 10 points in November.

Disgusted at what had become of the party of Ronald Reagan since he left office in January 1989, I tuned out politics completely that last week in August when the Democrat Party had their convention.

On the morning of August 29th, I woke up a little later than normal. I had no Friday classes and this was, after all, the beginning of Labor Day weekend. It was probably somewhere between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. My two kids were home from school and my wife, a pharmacist, was also off work that day. She was in the kitchen making something to eat. I remember grabbing the remote from the nightstand and flicking on the television.

I went to FOX News, as is my custom. They were saying something about Pawlenty and Romney being out as VP candidates. I therefore assumed it would be Lieberman so I turned the TV off, got up, made the bed, and took a shower.

A little later, I turned the TV back on and saw Governor Palin’s name at the bottom of the screen as a potential VP pick. I immediately switched to MSNBC, then CNN. All cable channels were buzzing with rumors that it would be her. To say I was excited would be the understatement of the year. I ran into the kitchen to tell my wife that McCain might pick Palin. Not being a political junkie, she said “Who’s Palin”? I mumbled something I can’t recall and went back to the TV.

My heart sank when an anchor on one of the channels said it couldn’t be Palin about to be announced in Dayton (Ohio) since she was at the Alaska state fair in Palmer. I flicked through the other channels and they still seemed to think Palin would be announced, although they left plenty of wiggle room that it could be someone else.

Then, there was some rumor of a plane landing the night before at an airport near Dayton with someone which fit her description on board. My optimism returned.

One by one, the cable channels began falling into line, becoming steadily more convincing in their assertions that McCain would in fact select Governor Palin. I literally could not stray from the TV that morning. The excitement was building that finally, something positive was about to happen for the Republican Party and my country.

Still, I did not allow myself to believe that McCain would do something so brilliant until…

This move by McCain invigorated the Republican Party and renewed my optimism that, as our Founding Fathers envisioned, one did not need to be a lifetime politician to be a political leader. I had never given to a political candidate or party before. That changed moments after her speech in Dayton. The rest, as they say, is history.

So, this coming Saturday, August 29, we will all celebrate Sarah Palin Day. How you choose to commemorate this event is up to you. Personally, I will be celebrating as indicated above…a $29 donation to SarahPAC and a bottle of fine vintage…2004 Saint Francis chardonnay for me. Cheers!

Update: Joshua suggests the following vintage for the occasion:

... [A] true believer would have gone for a Syrah called Palin: It's from Chile, not Alaska, which is probably a good thing - no offense to Alaskan winemakers (if there are any. Pinot Noir would do well up there, I suppose?).

I have had syrah in the past, although not Palin syrah. As I recall, syrah is a moderately dry red wine which tasted, to my untrained palate, like a cross between pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon. It was delicious. Joshua is quite correct; it would make an appropriate accompaniment to the festivities on Sarah Palin Day. Yogi41 has also provided a picture of the aforementioned fine wine:

I'm in. And I'll have some White Zinfandel, thank you. :)

Besides, we might need a little faith and wine to get through the next 3 1/2 years....

Neo August 24, 2009 3:32 PM

AMEN IN SPADES!!!

One of the best blog posts I have ever read.

wisetrog August 24, 2009 3:35 PM

I don't drink wine (we're teetollers, so will be having a homemade mango juice. :)

I always had this thought. Is it merely coincidence that both Standard and the Review have had their cruises to Alaska at the same time? Or did they both want to check on her? Independently or together? Or the buzz was building which we didn't know about?

BTW, I first came across her in the Fred Barnes column, then saw her in Craig Ferguson show, then found that she had was generating lots of internet buzz through Steve Maloney (didn't know about Adam Brickley; btw, why isn't Maloney mentioned anywhere in the Palinsphere?) When I saw her name mentioned on TV, immediately ran to nearest internet shop and got hooked to Hot Air. That's it.

Goethe Girl August 24, 2009 3:43 PM

I just listened to the Dayton speech again. It was terrific. Also learned in it that August 29, 2008 was the Palins' 20th wedding anniverary. That makes 2009 the 21st.

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 3:43 PM

Won't even take time to read the ENTIRE post before saying...

YES!!!

Sarah Palin Day, Aug. 29th.

$29 to SarahPac, and for me almost any Napa, Sonoma, or Russian River Valley Cabernet will do just fine.

Thank you Sarah Palin.

Thank you C4P.

LoveThatGirl August 24, 2009 3:43 PM

She has my money.
I will get up extra early and donate, for I will be helping at a Fish Fry (first time for me)for Sonny Perdue (R) in Perry GA.
I have a Palin and a Prayer Warriors For Sarah Palin sticker on my van. I will get there early and park up front so everyone may see it. :)
I heard that Hucky might be there, (never liked the man)I hope he SEE's it. :)
Great Job guys.
Blessings, Irma

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 3:45 PM

And let me get my congratulatory wishes on record even now:

Happy Anniversary Todd and Sarah!

You make us proud.

Doug,

I too will being sending in my $29 dollars to SaraPac.
But you can keep your chardonnay...give me an ice cold beer instead...:)

MsLiberty August 24, 2009 3:54 PM

I used to be very interested in politics when I was younger, but I'd largely tuned out in recent years and wasn't at all interested in last year's election given how utterly obvious it was that the media was going to assure Obama's victory. Given that I was lukewarm toward McCain all along (toward all the primary candidates, actually, except for Huck whom I loathe), I had pretty much resigned myself to the idea that the country was doomed, that the days of a Reagan GOP were long behind us and never to return.

And then, on August 29, my phone rang and my best friend -- a disenchanted PUMA and Hillary supporter -- excitedly announced, "McCain picked a woman for his running mate!" I asked who it was and she told me, "Her name is Sarah Palin. She is the governor of Alaska."

I'd only heard of Gov. Palin before that in passing, but I immediately wanted to know more. And the more I learned about her, and the more I saw of her on TV, the more I liked her. By the time her convention speech rolled around, I was hooked! I am now more plugged into politics than I've been in over a decade, and thanks to Sarah Palin, I have renewed faith that Reagan conservatism is still possible -- she will bring it back into vogue.

So with that said, I have my $29 and a nice bottle of merlot ready for Sarah Palin Day.

I can't wait for President Palin Day, tho. ;o)

Whitney The Pipsqueak August 24, 2009 3:59 PM

Thank you for sharing your story, Doug!

I will be celebrating with a donation to SarahPac and a strawberry margarita. :)

I remember sitting at work waiting for Romney or Pawlenty to be mentioned as McCain's VP when my co-worker said, "Well, McCain picked the governor of Alaska as his VP".

I hadn't heard anything about her, but I spent the Labor Day weekend trying to find out more about her and was I ever impressed. Her presentation on the national stage and her continued voice in our nation has helped me transform from Whitney the reluctant Republican to Whitney the charged up conservative. :)

Oh, and if anyone has any thoughts on what the LOTUS's take on Sarah Palin day should be, please let me know. :)

indemind August 24, 2009 4:00 PM

Thank you Doug, Aug. 29 2008 what a day it was for Conservative Americans. It is also the day I celebtrate my mother's birthday and my special needs son's birthday. August 29th always a great day in my household.

Sarah rocks 2012

Nande August 24, 2009 4:00 PM

$29 on the 29th sounds good to me!!

And, ditto to CharterOakie's mention that August 29th is also the Sarah and Todd's anniversary too. Glad they aren't ruining it with that pesky divorce ;-)

Celebrations all around!!

Yogi41 August 24, 2009 4:01 PM

Isn't that McCain's birthday, as well? We can have a John McCain and Sarah Palin Day. /sarc

The 28th and 29th of last year were very exciting. I remember being up all night, reading the posts at the PalinforVP, and getting thrilled when people there were tracking the plane route. Then, to wake up the next morning and have it all confirmed - simply amazing.

Unfortunately, I had to attend a funeral that day for an acquaintance, but the sweet certainly outweighed the sadness.

I remember one poster at that site phoned her house that evening, to see if she was home. Obviously, if she was home, there was no way she was the pick. I recall everyone getting excited when he got her answering machine, further fueling our hope that she was on the way to Ohio.

It seemed wonderful to me, that here is a Governor with a listed phone number. I'm sure it's not listed anymore, but up to that day last year, anyone could call her up and talk to her. Too bad the hateful people had to ruin her accessibility to the people she governed, but what a rush to read that blog back then.

I'm glad Adam is the recipient of the first annual Sarah Palin Day Award. Thanks for your efforts to get her nominated, Adam. :)

MLWELZ August 24, 2009 4:02 PM

August 29th Todd and Sarah's Happy Anniversary Day. And she is galvinized in our mind - Sarah On the National Scene.
GOD BLESS THEIR MARRIAGE and
GOD BLESS TRACK OVER SEAS and
GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Yogi41 August 24, 2009 4:04 PM

Oh, and in honor of that day, I'm going to choose a Syrah for my wine of choice. ;)

Adrienne Ross August 24, 2009 4:04 PM

Here in New York one way we are planning to celebrate what I call "Sarah's Coming Out Party" is to have a get together at a central location, where we will meet and greet, enjoy a meal, and watch the Dayton, Ohio speech together. We're working to pull this together.

The 29th of August, 2008 was indeed a special day, a day that will go down in history.

And yes, I also look forward to January, 2013! My hope is that THAT day will mean even more to us by the time it's all said and done!

God bless.

PEC August 24, 2009 4:05 PM

I'm in for 29 dollars to SarahPAC in addition to my normal amount. We need to get this spread through the Sarah Blagosphere.

Whitney The Pipsqueak August 24, 2009 4:07 PM

P.S. I think President Obama may be celebrating Sarah Palin day with some wee-weed at Martha's Vineyard!:)

Nancy August 24, 2009 4:07 PM

I'm in! With a few Mt. Dews!

I think August 29,2008, was also the day The Wasilly Hillbilly turned The One's Mojo to Wee-Wee. He will never recover from that day!
The deafening silence of anything about his acceptance speech the night before, was music to my ears. Oh to see his face as everybody turned their attention to Governor Sarah Palin!
These next 3 years are going to be fun!
Thank you Adam, and C4P!

Snowed In August 24, 2009 4:11 PM

Darn you.

I had intended to write something like this on my blog, but your article would make anything I wrote rather redundant.

(One of the few differences btw you and me is that I knew a few hours before that she was gonna be the pick...a revealing hint was dropped on Adam's site around midnight.)

So I may just have to link to yours, when I get around to it. Cheers!

DanO August 24, 2009 4:15 PM

long ago in these comments I added a suggestion to the brilliant $29-for-SarahPAC idea: each of us find 8 Sarah-supporting friends, and get them to pledge $29 each for SarahPAC.

8 and 29

8 x $29 = $232

that's just over a dollar per candidate to help get anti-statist majorities in the house and senate (218 house members, plus 14 new senators).

I'll be using e-mail, personal calls, and FaceBook to hit that goal.

Who is with me?

wisetrog August 24, 2009 4:16 PM

yogi41, didn't you were one of the old regulars at Brickley's place. You didn't tell us how you got interested in Sarah though?

I felt the same way about McCain not interested until Sarah Palin came along! I first heard of her from Dr. Laura's radio program. She was praising Sarah on not aborting her Down's Syndrome baby. When I heard it was a governor and she knew about the baby before it was born, I was shocked. Can any politician be that moral? Dr Laura said "Now there is a woman who has her priorities right"! When McCain said Sarah Palin from Alaska my first thought was "Was this the same governor of Dr. Laura"? Yes it was! I heard her speech and was twice hooked! How this woman has been so mocked is beyond me! I too will celebrate Sarah Palin Day!

Shyann Canon August 24, 2009 4:22 PM

I just knew they were going to pick her. I heard her acceptance speech in my car on the radio and I (being a 44 year old woman, working mom and wife) just started crying. It was weird because I didn't think I would have that reaction. Anyway, I will gladly celebrate Sarah Palin Day on August 29th and will most likely be sipping on a Diet Coke, but my drink of choice would be a really cold Bud Light....Wine of any kind gives me a blinding headache the next day. ;-)

piper4444205 August 24, 2009 4:23 PM

I'm in with my $29, but since I'm underage I can't drink alcohol, instead I'll have a a skinny white chocolate mocha. My parents had to literally pay me to watch her convention speech because I hated politics until I heard her speech. I was completly glued, she had me on the very first sentence. Now I can't get enough of politics. After the convention speech I gave back the money my parents payed me. I even changed my major from English to History, and now I'm minoring in political science, and once i'm ready i'm going to run for Mayor.

gardunne63 August 24, 2009 4:24 PM

I'll toast a bottle of very Sarah Syrah on Sat.

I first became aware of Sarah in Feb '2008 when "Vogue" featured her in that issue. Despite being a rather lefty woman's publication (what isn't?) , the article was very fair and it was clear the writer knew Sarah was destined for greater things than living in Juneau. I usually throw away my Vogue issues a month or two after receiving them, but I knew then this was one issue to hold on to.

Bean Counter August 24, 2009 4:24 PM

I'll be hosting a cookout for some likeminded friends. We'll have grilled wild Alaskan salmon, a keg of something domestic, a cake in honor of the Palin's anniversary, a screening of the convention speech, then we'll all make our $29 donations to SarahPAC.

This will henceforth be a high holy day on my calendar.

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 4:29 PM

Yogi @4:04,

Syrah, of course!

I know there is petit syrah...

however, surely this occasion calls for...

"Grande Sarah."

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 4:29 PM

I am not kidding you:

My well fell on the floor in our hotel room when we listened to her tell us about herself and her family.

Well, to be perfectly clear, she threw herself towards / on the bed, landing on her knees. But how appropriate.

I too was politically born on that day and have not wavered since.

And to think in the :20 minute speech, I knew EXACTLY what Sarah Palin stood for, and she has lived up to every aspect of her introduction. Yet after seven weeks, Peggy Noonan proclaimed, "I have no idea what she stands for" ... sheesh

As you study her more and more, you realize, she is fundamentally the same as she was from the time of elementary school. That is very exciting and encouraging.

I am also not kidding you: my life has been changed forever by her, regardless of what she does in the next three years and beyond.

I am writing my testimony to the "effect of Sarah Palin", but in a nutshell, I took on a new direction in my career, one that has opened up amazing opportunities, and it was inspired by her standing up to the fat cats in Alaska.

Sarah metaphorically says "I see things differently", and those were my exact words to MY fat cat colleague last fall, and he is no longer with our organization, and my work has completely obliterated his feeble attempt at controlling the "little people".

(btw, my new career direction is web site development. and you will see more on this later. I was going to hit the streets on Aug 29 but I will just celebrate quietly and thankfully like the rest of you, but it will be Kahlua and cream, I can't stand wine ...)

(I'll be doing something big, in my pathetic way, o/a Sept 13, to keep the momentum going after the Tea Party.)

Lastly, I have raised two "Sarah Palins", one in gov't in DC and one at Grove City College.

It's better than anything any of us could have ever imagined, no ?

Thank you John McCain and Fred Barnes !

and Thank you Chuck and Sally Heath !

Izzy August 24, 2009 4:32 PM

Sarah is good 'ground' to sow into. Definitely I am in.

I remember I so nervous about the other choices V.P. When Sarah Palin was confirmed as the choice I had a PEACE even though I had never heard or seen her before...I told my wife "that's it".

My conscious was right. My family and I love Sarah and her family.

Not to brag but Sarah and I, we both have the same birthday (Feb.11). What an honor!

Yogi41 August 24, 2009 4:35 PM

wisetrog,

Let's see if I can make this short. :)

I've mentioned a few times that I followed the Democrats primary much more so than I did our own. I thought our guys were very boring and not one of them interested me. I still watched the debates, but I couldn't get excited about it.

The Dems primary was a different story. I'm very conservative, but I also really, really want a female for President. So, I did root hard and heavy for Hillary and followed every single detail about that primary since 2007. I shared the lies, the smears, the cheating and the ruthlessness that every Hillary supporter endured during that time. I was a regular on many liberal blogs; not because I shared their political point of view, but because I wanted to see a woman prevail, and to my mind, if it had to be Hillary, then so be it.

When it was becoming clear to me that Hillary was not going to get the nomination, around April or so, I started getting interested in McCain's choices for V.P. I was really hoping for a woman, and I started to research the prospects. That's how I came across Sarah Palin. It was the energy issue that grabbed me, but it was also her entire conservative way of life and governance.

I couldn't believe it. How lucky to finally find a candidate who embodies everything I want in a President. I didn't have to settle for any woman; here was THE woman that fit the bill.

So, I wrote McCain weekly, asking him to choose her. I stumbled across Adam's blog and although I never posted, I read other people's opinion and knew I found like-minded people.

The rest, I already said. That night prior to her announcement was amazing and I'll never forget how excited everyone was, knowing she was the pick, even though the media kept denying it.

So much for keeping it short.

August 29th is actually my birthday lol. But just about a year ago on the night before, I was thinking to myself "Man, he (McCain) has to pick someone out of the box." I knew who Sarah was and had watched some of her appearances on Glenn Beck's show and on CNBC with Kudlow. I thought she would have been the best pick, but I did not think McCain would actually do it. I just did not see it happening with someone like Romney or Pawlenty. When I discovered it was in fact Sarah, I was shocked, but definitely happy.

Only then was I to discover just how vicious her threatened opponents were going to be. I knew she was going to be treated unfairly, but certainly not with the vitriol that soon followed. I look back on this somewhat disappointed, then I remind myself that better things are to come for her. It was merely a step on to something much bigger.

Nancy August 24, 2009 4:43 PM

I'm getting goosebumps reading the post and the comments.

piper4444205,
You are awesome! I wish I could move to your town when you becomemayor! God bless you!

Gelston August 24, 2009 4:43 PM

There are a few of us old timers from the evening of August 28th, 12 hours before the announcement in Dayton when we learned from the mysterious Drew that Sarah was chosen. I will never forget going to bed that night with the biggest smile on my face.
I talked to mountain mama and manajordan yesterday. Some of us may go back to Adam's old site for a virtual reunion. I started there as a reader in May, 2008.
On Adam's site I used knowitall as my name. I chose that to amuse my wife, who is my reason for living. What wife does not look at her husband giving opinions on the internet and think "knowitall"?
I changed to Gelston which is a genealogy name.

I meet Brianus and many others of you there.
Maybe mountain mama or Adam would return to recount that Sarah Palin Eve story.
We were the first in the country to know.

My birthday is tomorrow(August 25th) my birthday present came a few days later with the announcement that Sarah Palin was McCain's choice for VP. the moment I saw her I said to my Mom "You've just been touched by an angel" I knew right there she was the real deal, and I have known that ever since. She is absolutely AMAZING and she is the ONLY person I will EVER vote for

terri August 24, 2009 4:45 PM

I didn't know anything about Sarah Palin. Absolutely never even heard of her before. I was soo distraught that Mcain got the nomination and at the rupublican party that I just didn't give a s***.
But then when I heard that he had nominated a female for his running mate...my ears perked up big time.

I made a point to watch her convention speech and I was hooked.
Shyann, I too started to cry. I thought right then, "she is me"
and I couldn't believe it.
I have watched that speech several times since and each time I get goosebumps.
Needless to say when I voted, it was not for Mcain but for Sarah. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of her.

Yogi41 August 24, 2009 4:46 PM

CharterOakie,

Actually, there's a Palin winery in Chile that sells Syrah; it's called Palin Syrah and during the elections, it was a hot seller in the red states, whereas in San Francisco, it was taken off of the shelves because it offended people and no on bought it.

I am one of those people who knew Sarah was chosen by early morning on August 29th.

But my Sarah story is what happened on April 22, 2008. I'll never forget standing in my living room when I heard the TV news reporter say that Trig had Down Syndrome. Just like that a shiver traveled at lightening speed down the entire length of my spine. I remember saying to myself, "The vice presidency may not be in store for Sarah, but God has big plans for this woman." And I was right!

Count me in for $29 contribution and a bottle of cabernet.

PS Who is Drew? Perhaps he will reveal himself late Friday night on Adam's site.

I can hardly believe it's almost been a year. Last year at this time I was going on and on about Sarah Palin to my co-workers. The day she was announced I got a big ol high five from my boss.
I think one of my first thoughts when I realized that she was the pick is how my future daughters would have a woman of my political ideals to look up to. What a great day that was.

have you met Whitney ?

Our country is in good hands with the likes of you two (and Sarah, of course).

PEC August 24, 2009 4:55 PM

I remember that night. I remember some people were wanting to call the Palin's house to see if they were home. Supposedly Sarah had a listed # and one of the bloggers was wanting to build up the courage to call. I think I went on about 2 hours sleep that night.

bestbud August 24, 2009 4:55 PM

piper4444205,
Bless your heart young lady you are an inspiration!

manajordan August 24, 2009 4:55 PM

Gelston,

I did respond to you yesterday, though it was kinda late. I'm totally in for the virtual reunion. That site was a life saver during the campaign.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 4:56 PM

When Sarah gave her convention speech, I was going nuts. My son was in the room, and he must of thought I was raving mad.

The lipstick joke is beyond classic, it's prophetic.

But I proclaimed then, "You are looking at the first female POTUS".

And I am still saying that.

yea, Sarah !

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 4:57 PM

Hmmm...

What else can we do to offend those in S.F. who were offended by Palin Syrah?

Thinking....

William Henley August 24, 2009 4:57 PM

Me, I am just a drunk who loves his rot-gut whiskey. I have followed Sarah since she was a mayor in the itty-bitty city of Wasilla. I got mad at her for starting a 2% sales tax in the town that I must shop in (got over that as I saw the good it did).
I was overly proud of her for quitting her job in the oil ministry because of "good ole boy" policies and corruption. I fought for her unfailingly when she ran for Govenor and on the morning she was picked for VP I had just woke up with a terrible hangover. The phone was ringing off of its hook. I answered and the voice shouted: "Sarah is running for VP with McCain." The voice was my better half calling from Colorado where she was visiting her sister. I turned on the TV and nearly forgot to make coffee. The rest is history and shall continue to make history.
In my 55 years, I have never given a penny to any "lying" candidate and never in my life did I think that I would. After donating so much time to Sarah all I can say is: "Sarah Palin Day, hip hip hooray" I will donate my $29 dollars to the cause.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:01 PM

I'll have a Shirley Temple with a splash of orange juice! :) Y'all enjoy the wine/beer/beverage of choice.

Yogi41 August 24, 2009 5:02 PM

Bill in Baltimore,

You and Camille Paglia. I remember her article in Salon, where she wrote of Sarah Palin's national debut in Ohio:

“We may be seeing the first woman president. As a Democrat, I am reeling."

Neo August 24, 2009 5:02 PM

I just ordered 2 bottles of Palin Syrah 2006.

I think all Sarah supporters should by all they can afford.

ALA August 24, 2009 5:04 PM

Palin Day great idea.
Easy on that wine though -we are all gonna be called a bunch of deranged alcocholics by the MSM.
piper4444205 you are awesome.

Shyann Canon August 24, 2009 5:08 PM

Gosh, so many stories with so many similarities and yet coming from so many different places. I, too, made my then 11 year old son watch her convention speech and I was just so proud of her and I turned to my son and said....you just heard the future POTUS....I don't know when that will be son, but it will be in both our lifetimes. He just rolled his eyes at me, but I could tell he was impressed. I am still working on my somewhat disillusioned and completely in denial husband, who thinks I am nutso, but he will come around. I'll make him! Ha!

God bless all of you, this site lifts my spirits and gives me hope.

TangledThorns August 24, 2009 5:08 PM

This weekend I was discussing politics with some liberal leaning friends. They honestly don't believe Sarah Palin wrote her own op-eds.

The good point out of that is the liberals are reading her posting and finding she is smarter than the realize.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:10 PM

Shyann,

send hubby my way. I'll have a talk with him.

:-)

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:10 PM

I too have been inspired by Sarah. I'm planning to go to college and major in political science. I did visit DC a couple of months ago and I even though I fell in love with it, it definitely needs help. I'm not sure how I'm going to make it, but I'm going to hopefully clean up the place- just like Sarah! It would be awesome if I could get a job there while (if) she is madame president.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:12 PM

Jane Austen,

my daughter is 25, 18 months in a congressman's office. Went to DC with an unpaid internship, then got the staff job. She loves it and loves DC.

We need more of you gals !

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:14 PM

thanks Bill in Baltimore- after all, (can I mention this on the internet?) I'm a decade younger than Whitney the Pipsqueak :)

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:14 PM

(hey, barbarians, am I right in observing that troll traffic is practially non-existent, and usually it's one at a time, then they crawl away.

It's been refreshing !)

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 5:15 PM

Tangentially on topic:

"We tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco."

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:17 PM

My family doesn't get it. They think I'm obsessed with Sarah. Yeah, I'm usually on this site about 5 times a day, but I can't donate money or help out. My blog is it. I feel useless.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:20 PM

Jane,

Sarah has the amazing ability to connect to the regular folk and to also walk in genteel circles, and to also connect to generals and privates.

Her election will be a marriage of the grassroots combined with her ability to break down barriers in the "big leagues".

Elections are won on the air and on the pavement, neighbor talking to neighbor (and to the local newspaper and talk show host).

You, my young friend, are not useless.

You are key to Sarah being elected.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:21 PM

@Whitney
Maybe LOTUS should try to figure out what to give Madame 45 for the anniversary. Give a surprise party! :)

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:22 PM

Bill in Baltimore-
As soon as i turn 18 I'm going straight to get registered for voting. I WANT THAT RIGHT. I WANT THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE OUR COUNTRY'S LEADERS. I WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:23 PM

Jane, that is sweet, keep on truckin'

and keep on reading. A lot.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:24 PM

Bill-
I'm taking AP Government this year. :)

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:24 PM

Jane,

have you read Sarah's bio "Sarah" ?

That was one of the main things that endeared her to me. It's an easy read. just go to Amazon and search "Sarah" (it comes up first, ha ha)

DanO August 24, 2009 5:24 PM

Whitney,
I'll email you tonite with my idea.
Thanks for surfacing here and tossing a lifeline. ~DanO

Flicker August 24, 2009 5:25 PM

I bet Mccain wished that day would of never happened now. He knows that she lost the election for him. I wonder if her and Mcain had any death panels in mind thst day. Go ahead I am anxious to hear what you guys have to say to me. Enjoy your Sarah Palin Day cause she wont ever have another one.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:26 PM

Bill-
is it "Sarah: How a Hockey Mom turned the Political Establishment upside down?"

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:26 PM

Jane,

my daughter got her start with AP Gov't ! So it looks like you are on the right path.

She also had a really good teacher, another young lady who is a Christian, and that was about the election time of 2000, when our hearts sank that Al Gore contested the results.

W disapointed.

Sarah will not. but she is human after all. I think I'm right about that.

:-)

Whitney The Pipsqueak August 24, 2009 5:28 PM

Jane,
Thanks for making me feel old...just kidding! Thanks for the idea for the LOTUS blog!:)

Piper and Jane,
1 Timothy 4:12 to you both! Keep it up!:)

Dan O,
Thanks! I look forward to your idea!

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:28 PM

Hey Flicker-
Let me show you the door.
***doors slams and Flicker is heard screaming as finger is jammed***
Oh yeah, we'll enjoy it.
Hey Nancy do you want the troll?
I need some lessons from you. :)

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:29 PM

Jane,

yes, I believe so. by Lynne Johnston (I think).

Sarah's lovely smile on the cover, wearing red. Paperback.

I bought a copy for each of my kids last fall.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:30 PM

Bill and Whitney-
I became a Christ-follower at 10, and I love 1 Timothy 4:12. :)

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:30 PM

Jane,

are you sure you're not even 18 years old ?

You smacked down flicker perfectly.

doesn't look like you need any lessons from Nancy . . .

you're on the team, first string.

:-)

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:31 PM

Bill-
I read it :) at the airport. I'm a pretty darn fast reader. :)
Any others you recommend?

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:32 PM

Bill-
since this is the internet, i'm not comfortable revealing my age, but yes, i'm not 18.

tim c August 24, 2009 5:33 PM

I'm posting before I read and all I can say is me TOO! That was the day I made my first political contribution.I had seen Sarah I guess in interviews with Hannity before that but I was ecstatic. A real person of accomplishment, not just being elected but a reformer, was actually in politics. One of the most memorable days of my life.

THANKS DOUG!

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:33 PM

Jane,

you are blessing my heart today.

God bless you.

I just got done teaching HS Sunday School, wish you could have been in the class.

Here's the lessons:
http://www.info-scroll.com/mtzion_ss/

they are very important to understand in this day and age, they connect the Bible to the real world.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:35 PM

Bill-
thanks. I feel totally accepted even though we've never met.
If we ever have a C4P convention, I'm going to force my parents to drive me there. (Unless, we could have a webcam one)
Knowing my luck, they won't do it. :(

MsLiberty August 24, 2009 5:36 PM

@terri:

I got as far as "The labor-affiliated group..." and knew I need not read any further. ;o) It's just more Astroturfing. Sarah has distilled the "end of life counseling" down to its essence, to something Americans understand and that strikes a real chord with them. The leftists are just barking into the wind now. They've been exposed and the more they keep protesting, the more they undermine their own position.

That said . . . I, too, looked at Sarah during her speech and said to myself, "She's me!" I think a lot of women did. Heck, a lot of PEOPLE did.

It sends chills up my spine that so many people just "knew" -- independently of one another -- that she would be President someday. It's rare that you encounter that kind of certainty in life, but I know with absolute certainty that Sarah will be POTUS -- our first woman POTUS!!! -- and hopefully sooner rather than later. It is written.

Dr. Vicki August 24, 2009 5:38 PM

Like Yogi, I too was hanging out on Adam's blog that night hoping and praying Sarah would be the pick. It was really very exciting when the info about tracking the planes starting coming in on the blog. I think I stayed up until about 2 in the morning then got right back up. It was pretty cool that we knew before even FOX and the other cables knew.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:39 PM

Jane,

sorry, I stopped at Sarah, I should read more.

Babarians, can you help young Jane with this (recommendations for books about Sarah beyond "Sarah" by Johnson) ?

but for edu-my-cation, definitely Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. It's actually an easy read, because his audience was a radio audience, so he explained things in simple terms.

Also, the Screwtape Letters (by Lewis), again, relatively easy to read.

I assume Chronicles of Narnia (Lewis) is good, but the movie is awesome, true to the Message.

Thx

Flicker August 24, 2009 5:39 PM

You guys on here are a joke. You all have a nice Sarah Palin day. While you are at make it a national holday. That would be better then a death panel day.

Nancy August 24, 2009 5:41 PM

Jane, good job! I think you got his flicking finger!

You are a great commenter on C4P, so you can take those trolls with one hand tied behind your back!:)

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 5:41 PM

Author of "Sarah" is Kaylene Johnson.

Oh, Flicker, tsk, tsk.

"Bang, bang, RAMmer's silver hammer come down..on your head! Hee-he-hee-hee"

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:42 PM

Jane,

I am hoping for a big C4P contingent at Sept 12 Tea Party in DC, there will be more information coming. We'd love to meet your parents !

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:42 PM

Flicker-
I've been called much, much worse. On a scale of creative cuss words from 1 to 10, I'll give you a... 1.5. "Joke" is not even a cuss word- are you we-weed up?

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 5:44 PM

National holiday. Why, an excellent idea, Flicker!

S/he's improving a bit, isn't s/he, Nancy?

Does s/he get to stay a bit longer?

Or time for the hammer?

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:44 PM

Bill-
I have school. Can't go for just a "tea party". I wish, but it won't happen. My parents aren't into politics, but they are Republican.
Maybe in Michigan they'll be a tea party, but Michigan is so blue that I might be mobbed. (I live near Detroit).

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:44 PM

Flicker,

you know, you might be on to something. Guys are really jerks, even some on this site.

But don't mess with the ladies on this site. you'll be toast in a hurry.

May I re-introduce you to little Janie who's going to kick your sorry a** (on the internet of course, with words, which you seem incapable of processing).

G'day, you creep.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:46 PM

Flicker,

get your grubby hands off of Jane.

Pick a fight with someone your own size.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:47 PM

Jane,

I'm sure there will be tea parties in Detroit / Michigan, also Ohio if that is feasible.

Nancy August 24, 2009 5:49 PM

I can't believe The Flicker took time away from his prized booger that he claims looks exactly like President Obama! I think he has it in a special glass case at the troll cave.

(whispering) It's best in these extreme PDS cases to just humor the sufferer.

So, The Flicker, is that resemblence you see, in your one in a million booger, pre-wee-weed up Obama or post-wee-
weed up Obama?

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:49 PM

Flicker,

I meant to say,

"pick on someone who has the size of your little pea-brain, don't take on the intellectually astute Jane. Because it's not fair to your sorry caboose"

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:50 PM

Thanks everybody!
I didn't want to reveal my age and all, because this is the internet. Thanks for the encouragement, even though I don't have the best of commentaries (that would be techno and others). We are united by Sarah Palin (I usually try not to call her by her first name- it's disrespectful to an elder).
United we stand, divided we fall.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:50 PM

nancy,

good one, how do you come up with these smackdowns ?

:-)

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:52 PM

Bill-
You're not so bad on taking down trolls yourself. LOL, you're making me blush. :)

Nancy August 24, 2009 5:52 PM

By the way, Jane, even though I'm probably old enough to be your mom, you are definately more mature than me!:)

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:55 PM

Nancy-
yeah, I know I'm the youngest here (even younger than AKReport) so the whole maturity thing? That's only online. :) I'm a regular teen.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 5:56 PM

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 5:57 PM

Also, last year I got into arguements with a guy who liked Obama and hated Palin. Needless to say, he didn't exactly have many points. He's still a good friend, but in my school, it's all about Obama (sigh). My closest friends think I'm just crazy supporting Palin.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 6:00 PM

Maybe I'm just naive, but I've always wondered why there are fights between Repubs and Dems and even infighting. I don't understand that. I just want to scream, "COMPROMISE!"
Can y'all help me?

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 6:04 PM

William Henley,

A: They get mad.

Q: What happens when someone realizes they've been lied to FOR A VERY LONG TIME
A: They get VERY MAD.

your friends' have two problems: their schooling and their parents.

But I am convinced that the youth will recognize this serial lying going on and it will be the revolution of 2010 and then 2012.

GoneWithTheRINO August 24, 2009 6:06 PM

Everybody be ready to send Sarah some supportive comments on her facebook page. I'm sure the trolls will be out en masse. Some union group is running a facebook "ad" calling Palin a liar...it's frankly HILARIOUS and won't work, but I'm sure some O-bots will be trying to spam her board.

indemind August 24, 2009 6:08 PM

29$ for SARAH PAC, on Aug. 29th. I like the idea. Lets see that"s, 29$ from my mother in her name.29$ from my sons name, 29$ from me, and I think I'll send 29$ in my Hollywood Liberal daughter name. I am going to make them monthly installments, so WHEN SARAH BECOMES POTUS, we can all thank Desi. for her Helping contributions to SARAH PAC HaHa. Love to see the look on her face. sorry! NOT!

sarah rocks 2012

Nancy August 24, 2009 6:10 PM

So, I guess we can put The Flicker down for a "no" on showing up for any Sarah Palin Day festivities. Whew! I wasn't sure of The Flicker's feelings on the subject.

But, but, Sarah Palin is nothing! The trolls tell us over and over. Isn't it kinda all wee-weed up that the trolls come here and share their hatred for her, with us? Do they think they are going to sway our support for her? Really? It is an all wee-weed up dream of theirs, I think!

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 6:10 PM

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 6:11 PM

I still say Flicker should be awarded a point for recommending that Sarah Palin Day be made a national holiday.

We need more trolls with good ideas like that!

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 6:13 PM

Jane,

goodness gracious, you have made my day. Thank you for the salute.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 6:13 PM

Darn. I don't have a Facebook because my parents won't let me have one. :( And no reasoning will work.
Nancy (or anyone), please (maybe?) battle some trolls over there for me if you have an account. I wish I could, but I can't.

CharterOakie August 24, 2009 6:15 PM

Nancy @6:10 "wee-weed up dream..."

That reminds me: Has Chrissy Matthews issued an apology yet for his comments when Kathleen what's-her-name was on?

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 6:16 PM

CharterOakie-
Hey, somebody put the idea on Palin's FB page, maybe she'll see it and laugh.
It is a good idea though.
Flicker, I'll up you from a 1.5 to a 3 on the scale. That was brillant.

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 6:16 PM

Jane,

well, there you go, you and your friends will be of voting age just in time for the 2012 election !

Bring a bunch of your friends !

you and Whitney definitely have to get together. Have you seen her LOTUS blog ? It's hilarious but true !

(NOW I am leaving. and definitely no texting while driving. definitely not.)

Bill in Baltimore August 24, 2009 6:18 PM

Jane,

you may not be 18, but you are as mature as they get, teen or adult.

I think my friends here will back me up on that.

DEFINITELY leaving now. Wife ticked.

cookboy August 24, 2009 6:18 PM

Jane, my rights end where they begin to step on your toes. The gov'ts powers stop where they begin to step on your toes, or mine. My money's mine, I can buy you a loaf of bread if I choose to. If the gov't takes my money and buys you bread, you've received ill gotten goods. What's right and what's wrong? Think it through, see who, if anybody, benefits from anothers labor.
As for 8/29 mmmmmmmm, whiskey, wholesome, delicious whiskey!

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 6:20 PM

Well, assuming that Chrissy has not apologized, it's time to crank up the record player again:

"I've lost that TING-lin' FEEL-in'..whoa that TING-lin' FEEL-in'.

I've lost that TING-lin' feelin'..now it's gone..gone..gone...whoa-whoa-whoa."

Nancy: next verse, please.

blestmom August 24, 2009 6:28 PM

On Aug. 29, I'm going to contribute $29 to SarahPac, and get a skinny white chocolate mocha (Sarah's favorite coffee drink.) And I get the added advantage of getting it from the very espresso stand Sarah gets hers from when she's home in Wasilla. They even call their skinny white chocolate mochas "The Sarah." And they are good!

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 6:28 PM

CharterOakie-
Can I give it a shot?
"Will I ever hav' that feelin'...whoa that feelin'...that feelin' again."
"Will I ever hav' that feelin'...oh no... no... no...whoa whoa whoa."

Lipstick August 24, 2009 6:30 PM

I was not following the election at all. I disliked Obama and McCain. I was in Richmond Virginia for a NASCAR race that weekend.

I saw it on TV and thought...Who? Then I moved on. The race was awesome. I flew home, where Ike was making a beeline for my home. Then Ike hit and I was without lights for many days, school was closed for two weeks and I had roof problems and water in part of my home.

Needless to say I was not following Palin. Then, with my electricity restored, I settled in to watch the RNC speech because, well, it was a woman and I wanted to see it.

I was floored. I thought "Good grief, this woman kicks tail, this woman is not afraid, this woman is a true conservative, this woman should be at the top of the ticket."

I have been a rabid Palin supporter from that moment on. $29 to SarahPac on August 29th.

2008 is also known as Hurricane Year at my house. I evacuated for Gustavu, was in Virginia when Hannah went up the coast (a Tropical Storm..no big deal to me) and rode Ike out. Hope to not repeat a summer like that again.

ps- I love NASCAR. I have met my fav driver, Jeff Gordon, at a Charlotte NC country club.

I will celebrating my twin granddaughter's wedding on the beach in Laguna, Calif.at 3:30 p.m. on the 29th. What more could I ask for when celebrating Sarah's day?

I will be lifting my glass (probably several glasses) to two beautiful women Sarah and my granddaughter, Christie. What a great occasion this will be for all of us here.

JaneAusten-
Yes, they really do call them "The Sarah."

Funny story...when she came home to Wasilla to cast her vote on election day, lots of us supporters were lining the street on the way to the polling place. It was pitch black outside (remember this is Alaska and it's dark at 6:00 a.m. in the winter here). We saw the flashing red lights of her motorcade...coming closer and closer...and then, the motorcade turned off early. We were all bummed thinking we weren't going to see her, and she had changed her route.

Turns out she was just grabbing a mocha on the way...and about 5 minutes later, here she comes! LOL

By the way, after she voted, she came over and talked with several of us. She was very gracious.

I love a good wine and will begin to buy wines only from Australia.

Why? Because I do not want to contribute to Nancy Pelosi in any way. I do not know what California wineries use Pelosi grapes, so to be absolutely safe, I'll go with Australia. I kind of doubt Pelosi ships her grapes to Australia.

Her vineyards are:

Zinfandl Lane Vineyards in St. Helena, CA
and
Skellenger Lane Vineyard in Napa, CA

They also own stock in Chalone Wine Group LTD.

So until I can determine that California wines are not contaminated with Pelosi grapes (bound to be exceedingly sour), I will only consume non-Californian wine.

In fact, I will celebrate SARAH PALIN DAY with a fresh Peach Daiquiri. I just might have a Pina Colada also---- just to pi** off/on Pelosi.

With all this imbibing on August 29th, the blogging could get even more interesting.

I will spread the word on all the Tea Party sites. Remember the TEA PARTY EXPRESS begins August 28th in Sacramento and ends up in Washington DC on September 12th. More than thirty hopefully gigantic tea parties all across the nation over the next couple of weeks.

HAPPY SARAH PALIN DAY

SARAH, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 21 YEARS WITH "THE DUDE" (Many, Many More)

Best Wishes to all who have other reasons to celebrate on August 29th.

It was my father's birthday. He died some 36 years ago. A day of rememberance.

Andrew was bad. Hurricanes were not as bad for me then because I was young and owned absolutely nothing. Now that I have a home and kids, they concern me, but I trust that the Lord will take care of us as He has always done.

Boarding up your home is a bad feeling, you truly have to let it go knowing it could all be gone when the storm hits. All that matters is your family is safe and healthy, the rest can be replaced. I was reminding myself of that while water was gushing into my home due to Ike=truly trusting the Lord.

I remember turning to my husband and saying "our whole house is going to be flooded." But the Lord stopped the water so it was just part of my house = Blessing from God!!

Whoo Hoo! I'm in too! $29 to SarahPac and a nice bottle of wine in celebration of Sarah Palin Day!

August 29, 2008 was an exciting day for me too. I had just barely heard of Sarah Palin over at Freerepublic. I was pretty disheartened by the boring Republican choices and I wasn't really paying attention, so I hadn't even bothered to read the Sarah postings carefully.

I just knew that some people were advocating for her selection with passion. As McCain's VP announcement drew closer and closer, I found myself hoping that he would go with this long shot. A women would be interesting! And I was starting to get the idea that there might be something special about her too. Why else were some faithful fans promoting her with so much fervor?

I was on the cable networks all morning on the 29th and I was getting more and more excited as it became clear that Sarah Palin would be the surprise pick. YES!! Suddenly I cared about the election! Then she spoke in Ohio and I found that I too was passionate about her! She had me at her first speech.

My brother, a strong conservative, was also excited. I'm sure he will join me on Saturday with a donation of $29 and some wine in honor of the best politician in America today.

God Bless Sarah Palin and her family! I can't wait to hear her speak again! Hopefully it won't be a long wait. Sarah, we want you to keep speaking on our behaf. We trust you and your good governing principles and skills! We need your help to get out of our frightful national mess.

Sarah, visit your Facebook on the 29th. We'll be there supporting you and drowning out any foolish trolls that are caught up in the Democrats "Facebook lies" lie. Thankfully, the opposition's one year attack on you and your family has made you virtually indestructible. More and more people's eyes are being opened and are seeing the real you; more and more people know who the real liars are on the national stage. Thanks to you, I think we have a chance to turn things around in this country.

What is a Hero

The word hero means different things to each of us…when we look and see what makes a hero…we may see someone with battle scars…someone who saved another…we see many who are said to be heroes …but sometimes we don’t see the hero in front of us

For a year we have talked about Sarah Palin, the V.P. candidate, governor, wife, mother and leader. We have offered advice on what she should do or not do (and yes a-lot of it comes from the bubbling heads on television). It seems to me we have lost “why we were drawn to her”, so let me talk for myself.

Is she a hero? In a-lot of ways yes, I look at how she has carried herself this past year with such grace and dignity. She has become a hero to me because of her “servant’ heart”. How many of us could have walk away from a “job I love” (her words not mine).

What makes her a hero, it not all the things she has accomplished but for me it is because she stays true to who she is ; she understands that there is a time just to be quiet and listen not to man but God.

If you will allow I am going to add something about another hero I knew; she like Governor Palin gave me hope that the sun was going to shine a-lot brighter and I could fly high enough so that I could walk on Mountains…

Another Hero

For the past years I (we) have lived with a person…who the world would not have looked on as great, famous or a hero…she had not written the great American novel… nor had she written a song that was hummed by all…she had not done any of the things that would have made the world look at her and call her…Great, famous or a hero

But to me and the others who loved her…she was as great as any who the world knew by name and most of all she was a hero

She fought each day with dignity and grace to keep the bits and pieces of who she was…slowly, with time it all was being taken away from her…she worked at remembering names and the faces of the ones she loved …She fought with all her might and strength this thing called Alzheimer’s

Losing her battle with grace

C4P. I'm not that great with anyalsis, but I'll help keep the trolls away. :) If I could meet anyone in the world for coffee, guess who? :) Yes, Gov. Palin.

Carrie August 24, 2009 7:57 PM

My family and I will be at the coast and away from technology, but I'll send my check today.

Unlike many C4P followers I didn't catch the Sarah-bug until early September. In August my family and I sat glued to the Olympics. Cheering, crying, learning as normal people achieved greatness through extensive effort. Knowing how ugly the upcoming conventions were going to be I too avoided them at all costs. On Aug. 29th I was 600 miles away from home, helping my first child get settled at college. My husband was sitting bedside with his dying father. And eventually I was driving my other 2 kids and I back home to start their school year. My husband had mentioned McCain chose a woman from Alaska, but neither of us got enthused. However, when I returned home I was shocked by this beautiful face that covered the magazines where Obama's face had been for months. I rewound politics fast. I am a Reagan American if there ever was one. (Those updates take a while)
I sat up late and listened to her first official addresses. I bought all the magazines and I soared. Just like the Olympics earlier in August I sat glued to TV coverage, good and bad, I screamed, I cried, I cheered. I dragged my two kids to the TV and again told them the stories of personal perserverance that I'd applied to athletes they loved. Now today when I sit down to the computer everyone says, "Oh mom's Sarahizing". The've grown to love the Palin family as people, not just politics. We've run our own race a bit stronger because of their effort. So yes count us in $29 - twice. Once for me once for the my kids.

RINO-hunter August 24, 2009 8:15 PM

Although I'd never been to Brickley's site until recently, I'd been pushing her name on FR and elsewhere for VP since late last spring/ early last summer, but I never thought it would actually happen. I got in the car on that Friday morning and my jaw dropped when I heard Sarah giving her first speech as VP candidate. I was so pumped I could barely drive. I'd been bummed because I was a Fred supporter and donor and McCain was absolutely my least favorite candidate (with the possible exception of Huckabee). So after being horribly disappointed in the primary, something finally went wonderfully right. I knew he couldn't pick Fred because another old white guy on the ticket just wouldn't work, and nobody else could have brought the energy to the campaign that Sarah did.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 8:32 PM

Very, very O/T, but I feel as if I must post this:
Last night I had this dream that i was sitting in this beautiful home, with the view of a lake and a huge kitchen to my left. From what I remember I was playing with Trig and Piper, Willow was helping Bristol with Tripp, and Sarah and Todd were in the kitchen cooking. I think I was a guest, for some reason or another. It was snowing too. Suddenly the TV comes on and there is an announcement that someone had won the 2012 election. I look on the TV and it's Palin. Piper hugs me and so does Sarah. Then everything dissolves. And I woke up.
That was one of the best dreams I ever had. I usually don't take stock in visions of the future, but in the back of my mind, I think, could it be?
The cool thing was that nothing was distorted or blurry. It was crystal clear.

ellen August 24, 2009 8:38 PM

@piper4444205

I am in the same boat. I didn't care about politics at all until I heard her announcement. It made me look into talk radio and things like that. I didn't change my major tho! Good luck to you.

I'm guessing there are a lot more young/ college age kids out there who voted for Palin their first time voting, and would love the chance to vote for her again. I know I would.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 8:44 PM

I haven't had my chance to vote yet, but soon I will.

M. Minnesota August 24, 2009 8:44 PM

I first heard about Gov. Palin around March 2008. Started reading about her. Politically, she had me at Hello. :-) Anyway I thought that there was no way Mccain would pick her, because of the dust-up Mccain had with evangelicals in 2000.

Then in April, I discovered Adam's Blog. We should have a day honoring the first day his sarahpalinforvp.blogspot went live. January 2008? December 2007?

Followed the blog everyday since then. It's great to see some of the "old timers still around, Gelston, Dr. Vicki, BettyJO, and many others!!

I would strongly encourage anyone to read the blog entries from August 28th-29 on sarahpalinforvp.blogspot.com It reads like a political thriller!!!

To Celebrate the donattion to SARAHPAC and since Sarah is the Superior Canidate, from Lake Superior Brewing Company, Duluth MN a cold handcrafted Brewski.

RINO-hunter August 24, 2009 8:53 PM

Jane,

I was at the campaign rally at the Blaine, MN airport last fall. There was a huge mob of teenage girls there, and they weren't there to see McCain. They'll be old enough to vote next time around, and they might be a political force to be reckoned with.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 8:58 PM

Rino-Hunter,
I didn't know that. I thought I was alone in the fact that I was the only one supporting Palin. I sure feel like that sometimes. Coming here makes me get my sanity back. To know that I indeed am not alone.

Jane Austen August 24, 2009 9:00 PM

M.Minnasota-
LOL about being there at Hello. Tom Cruise or Hanks line? :-)

johnfromcanada August 24, 2009 9:00 PM

I vividly rememeber sitting at my desk on the morning of Aug 29, 2008and watching my computer screen with the MSNBC live feed of her introduction speech. I was mesmerized by it at the time and still feel the that way as I watch it again tonight. What a speech! Electrifying, really. It was clear that she was someone really different and really special. No wonder the Obama campaign went into attack mode immediately (as you can hear at the end of that CBS clip - they recognized very quickly that she spelled big trouble).
I spent several hours that weekend surfing the 'net trying to find out all I could about Sarah Palin. And what I found and what I heard I liked. A lot. I could just see her not only as VP but as POTUS. I could hardly wait for her acceptaince speech.
Well, it's been quite a year with lots of ups and downs. But I still believe that she is the next POTUS, whether in '12 or '16, (hopefully '12) I'm not sure, but this woman is a born leader. We all need her.
Happy August 29, 2009 everyone - Sarah Day!

(Posted elsewhere, but I like it:)

Someone on her Facebook page suggested that everyone donate $29 on 8-29 to Sarah Pac. Let's crunch the numbers:

If every one of her Facebook supporters donated $29 on 8-29...let's see, as of 825,210 supporters that would be $23,931,090. Alot of money. If all her supporters donated $1 it would be alot of money. Spread the idea around, let's shoot for it! Almost $24 million dollars. Now that oughtta help:)

As a "Old Timer" and a humble Barbarian, I Propose that every March 4th be declared "March Forth Movement Day" (unless someone can come up with a cooler name) It would be a day in honor of Adam Brickley and Sarah Palin. People could celebrate it in much the same way as they do Sarah/Todd Day the 29th of August. Do I hear anyone second the motion? :-)

Uffda August 24, 2009 11:35 PM

I just wish I could make it to DC on 9-12:( I'll be there in spirit.

Uffda August 24, 2009 11:40 PM

Why do we feel the need to celebrate Sarah Palin Day? Because she represents the one light left burning in a quickly darkening world. She is our Lady Liberty. At a time when the whole world is sinking toward dependence and slavery, we've still got one person out there who speaks for us, who embodies our desire to be independent and free. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. When extreme evil arises, it's counterpart will also emerge, sometimes from the most unlikely of places.

Uffda August 25, 2009 12:12 AM

How about on 8-29 we have a thread for sharing our stories on how we first found out about Palin, our reaction to the announcement, etc.... I see that many of those stories are here already, but it would be cool to get everyone in on it. It'll be a day of celebration.

wilsonpickett August 25, 2009 12:59 AM

Lakerfanalways:

Happy Birthday tomorrow! I have enjoyed your enthusiasm for Governor Palin (and, to a lesser degree, the LA Lakers) the past several months.

My father, born on Aug. 25, 1914, would be 95 tomorrow if he were still living. He was part of the "Greatest Generation," giving up his tank-wagon fuel business (for farm customers) in central Kansas in 1942 to join the Army Air Corps, eventually serving as a B-29 mechanic on the island of Saipan in the Pacific. He came back from World War II in December of '45 and married his sweetheart six days later. He re-started his gasoline business, operating it for 47 years. I was a "baby-boomer," arriving on the scene in 1948.

Needless to say, my dad and the millions of others like him who fought to save our freedoms in World War II would be appalled at what Obama and his Marxist lieutenants are attempting to do to this country. May we stay strong in the months and years ahead to repel this insidious assault on our liberties.

Uffda August 25, 2009 12:59 AM

Moon,

Wow, I don't know if the world is ready for that. LOL! But it would be awesome.

Gelston August 25, 2009 1:03 AM

@wilsonpickett
My father in law flew from Saipan. The picture in my avatar is one he took on a mission to Japan.
He flew support for the Enola Gay.
Let's hope these two men crossed paths there on Saipan.

wilsonpickett August 25, 2009 2:06 AM

Gelston:

Wow! Thanks for the message about your father-in-law and the scoop on your B-29 avatar!

Dad told me several times about the Enola Gay leaving from the island of Tinian, which was so close to Saipan that they could see planes taking off from there. He also talked about Japanese soldiers still hiding out in the hills of Saipan (they had survived the fierce U.S. Marine battle for control of the island). The Japanese would occasionally attack the mechanics working on planes at night on the tarmack.

Dad had a unique way -- I imagine many soldiers used the same device -- of letting Mom (then his fiance) know where he was sailing to in the troop ship. Of course, it was classified as to where they were headed, and all letters were censored. So he changed the middle initial of her name on the envelope for six consecutive days; at first she thought he was losing his mind because her middle initial was not "S" or "A." But then she realized he was sending her a message. By the time the middle initials spelled out "SAIPAN," she searched out an atlas or a globe and found Saipan in the Mariana Islands of the South Pacific. Then she knew where he was for the next 15 months.

BTW, Gelston, I have really enjoyed your posts in recent months, especially your insight into ObamaCare because of your knowledge and experiences as a medical doctor. Plus, being part of that group who followed Adam Brickley a year ago -- especially the 24 hours before Sarah Palin was named V-P nominee -- must have been fascinating.

I know you are in Yakima, Wash.; I live in the small southern Illinois town of Columbia, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis.

wilsonpickett August 25, 2009 2:17 AM

Gelston:

Hey, wouldn't it have been something if my dad worked regularly on your father-in-law's B-29 or ate with him at the mess hall? Small world!

Dad's name was Wayne Pickett; what was your father-in-law's name?

My brother, who lives in Abilene, Texas, has the photos and scrapbooks left over from Dad's WWII experiences.

My Dear Friends in Sarah,

Thank you for the many wonderfully moving posts on this thread!!! I am sorry that I came so late to the thread. I shall repost these remarks on the Tuesday open thread.

Jane Austen,

THANKS for the account of your beautiful dream, set at the Palin home in Wasilla, and for all your other posts.

Gelston and M.Minnesota,

Thank you, my dear friends, for your posts.

There were so many others; I am sorry I cannot name everyone!!

My plan is to post my own memories of 29 August '08 on the 29th itself!!! And, it goes without saying, I'll send my $29 to SarahPac

As Doug noted, I'll be drinking a fine merlot that day.

God bless you all!!

Great idea Sarah Palin Day! $29! I'll be drinking Diet Dr. Pepper!

TJohnsonEE August 25, 2009 1:52 PM

This was an amazing thread. I've read so many threads for Sarah over the last year but I think this was my favorite. So many "Sarah Testimonies". People telling when they "got it". I loved the story of how you were tracking the plane to Ohio. Sounds like tracking Santa :)

What God has revealed to me in these last few days is what a moment this is. It's like a moment I was born for. I was born for all of it right down to her "Piper pray with me", to her burnette bangs. Like a dream I've been strangly having all of my life yet it was not clear.

Over the last year it has been coming clearer. We have ALL been brought to the Kingdom for such a time as this.

Obama and his "csars" take control over major parts of the nations economy! It's a scene right out of Atlas Srugged! It all seems dark and hopeless. But God is working!

Glenn Beck is giving us the real bad numbers. The Tea Parties are the people gathering. Rush Limbaugh, Levin, Hannity and Beck are all John Galt ranting on the radio at the end of book.

Sarah is the evidence that God is in it! Trig is evidence that God is in it! He has not forsaken us!There is no doubt!

Lincon said "you can't fool all the people all of the time". That's not just a quip... that's prophetic! People are opening their eyes and seeing. Sarah is seeing. Keep praying... God is moving!

NunyaB August 25, 2009 2:49 PM

Count me in for a blog post on Sarah Palin day, and $29 (at least) to her PAC.

For me, make it a Diet Dr Pepper, or maybe a root beer float with sugar-free ice cream and diet soda. Heck, maybe I'll really cut loose with a wine cooler.

"Gots to LOOOOOOOOOVE the Sarah!"

Bill in Baltimore August 25, 2009 2:53 PM

She has already changed the political landscape of the US, and this won't be the end of her influence.

Think Trigg. and Tripp. and just gaze into their face and you will know where they came from.

(and think of Piper patting down Trig's hair . . . tears in my eyes every time, even now)

:-)
