Juan Cole: Palin is American Ahmadinejad
Just when you thought they couldn't stoop any lower: check out Juan Cole's 'insightful' analysis over at Salon.com. Or rather: don't. It's the biggest crock of you-know-what you're likely to read this year:
Is Sarah Palin America's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? The two differ in many key respects, of course, but it is remarkable how similar they are. There are uncanny parallels in their biographies, their domestic politics and the way they present themselves -- even in their rocky relationships with party elders.
"Uncanny parallels." But of course. Both have two arms, two legs and a head. That's about where the similarities end, but that doesn't stop Cole from taking this thought experiment a little further. How about this for insightful political commentary:
An armed citizenry is important to Palin's conception of the republic, and she warned in her farewell address, "You're going to see anti-hunting, anti-Second Amendment circuses from Hollywood ..." She continued, "Stand strong, and remind them patriots will protect our guaranteed, individual right to bear arms ..." By talking about "patriots" "protecting" the individual right to bear arms, Palin skated awfully close to the militia or "patriot" movement on the right-wing American fringe (and not for the first time). Ahmadinejad is not similarly in favor of all citizens having guns, but he comes out of a popular militia, the Basij, which consists of hundreds of thousands of ordinary citizen patriots, armed and pledged to defend the constitution of the Islamic Republic.
Actually Juan, the Basij were used to violently suppress the Iranian people, and their campaign of intimidation could only work because Iranian people do not have the right to bear arms, let alone use them in selfdefence against bands of government-sponsored thugs. But never mind, eh.
His conclusion also has something of the moonbat about it:
Right-wing populism is (...) cavalier in its disregard of elementary facts and arrogant about the self-evident rightness of its religious and political doctrines. It therefore holds dangers both for the country in which it grows up and for the international community. Palin is polling well at the moment against other Republican front-runners such as Mitt Romney, and so, astonishingly, is a plausible future president. At least Iranians only got Ahmadinejad because of rigged elections, and they had the decency to mount massive protests against the result.
Apart from the bit about Palin being a plausible future president (which strikes me as fairly accurate given the current president's tanking poll numbers and the lack of serious competition within her own party), it's all straight out of the Hans Christian Andersen handbook of political analysis.
Juan, here's a little bit of free advice for you: maybe next time you should remember to take your medication first before switching on your computer. Otherwise you just end up embarrassing yourself.
UPDATE by RAM: Legal Insurrection highlights an interest little aside from one of Juan Cole's old interviews:
There's one other piece of Juan Cole history I wish had received more attention. His appearance last March on the The Colbert Report in which Juan Cole argued that people who chant "Death to America" were misunderstood, and that the misunderstanding was our fault (video below, at 3:08):Cole: Even the ones who are chanting Death to America, if you get them to the side, they say well you know "could you get me a visa. I'd really like to visit Disneyland."
Colbert: So you say, they're chanting "Death to America" in the streets, but we're being hasty in our judgment of them.
Cole: Yes were are.
Colbert: It's really our fault here.
Cole: Yes."
So Mahmoud Ahmadinejad marches in the streets chanting Death to America. Juan Cole says we misunderstand him and it's all our fault. Now remind me, what does Sarah Palin have to do with this?

Boy, it's so easy to find these jokers on Facebook and see who they really are:

This just gets better every minute. They are sooooooooooooooo afraid!
But I see what they are doing now.
Remember: Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Rashid Khalidi?
Well, if you can’t find any radical people Palin is associated with, lets just say she is one.
Meanwhile, Dear Leader is actually assembling a "Citizen Army" which will be "better funded than the military".
Another day, another projection.
I hate to say it but who is Juan Cole? At first Juan Williams crossed my mind but after reading the title I realized Juan William's though I may not like politically is not that stupid to write something like this.
What Juan Cole is forgetting was that she was addressing to a crowd of ALASKANS who do hunt.
He's also forgetting that she is from Alaska where they have wild animals roaming around, so handling guns is normal for them, including in national parks. And for Feinstein to want to limit hunting until the wild animal is near extinction, people are going to need their guns to defend themselves from a wolf in their backyard if it were to attack.
For us in the big city with cops all around us, we don't understand the need for having a gun (unless you have a lot of money or feel threatened by someone). For those that live in the midwest or in small towns where there is wide open spaces, these people will need their guns for self-defense if anything were to happen and a trooper is miles away.
Before those crazy writers jump to the conclusion that Palin is all about defense/guns/hunting, they should look at her audience. She was addressing Alaskans the day she mentioned anti-hunting advocates will rain down on them.
Juan Cole is a radical left wing anti-Semite. Being hated by someone like this is a good thing.
all the Palin haters have probably reached, or are reaching, the point of diminishing returns. They've so saturated the market, that most people ignore them, or just roll they eyes and say, "what else is new?" By 2012 most will be immune to the attacks, which will essentially be a rehash of the smears and lies launched in the2008 campaign, and little else.
lol the left is going insane. now that sarah can somewhat hide in the shadows.
Not to mention, I thought the fact that senators from California, Rhode Island and...some other east coast state were introducing legislation abtrogating Alaska's 2nd Amendment rights was pretty much a validation of Palin's speech. Kinda proved she's not paranoid, yes?
This commentary on Cole misses the point of why Cole, Sullivan and other make the comparison to Dinner Jacket.
Palin is a deeply religious person. People of faith are believed by the Left to be dangerous when left unsupervised. This is key to understanding those who hate Palin-it is less about politics and more about her Christianity.
When the Left found out that Palin placed her troubles at the feet of the Cross, and died to the Self, they knew immediately that they had to destroy her.
Ahamdhi-nejad is a fanatical Shi'ite "Twelver", who pines for the return of the Mahdhi to install Shi'ism as the dominant planetary faith and rule the world at the End of Days.
The comparison with Palin is deliberate and an attempt to marginalize her.
Repost from my rather late Saturday night post to the Open Thread.
Yes, Sarah is definitely the candidate of the Tea Party Movement.
I have no doubts now.
"I'm back from the Ohio Sovereignty Party in Columbus for the 10th Amendment ballot initiative. Here is the link to my album/pics from the day.
And YES, these 10th Amendment Tea Partiers went nuts over my Sarah poster when I held it high and walked by the steps to the statehouse. A big cheer went out from the entire area in front.
I have no doubts now. The Tea Party Movement of limited government, low taxes, and the Constitution overlaps with everything that Gov. Palin represents.
The last photo is me with Lisa Woods of Team Sarah. Lisa is a big leader of the movement and TS in northern Ohio.

I'm not kidding people. These people love our Sarah.

The left is proving Sarah is credible with every chance they get. They are actually helping to build her credibility in an ironic way.
*Cap n Tax - they attack her and not her argument. Leaving her argument standing as too credible to attack. They just go after her persona.
*Resignation - they just file more frivolous complaints proving her reasons why valid.
*2nd Amend Warning - they introduce legislation proving her warning wise.
They really don't get it but I find it helpful so I won't complain too much :)
Joshua,
Very nice job deconstructing and destroying Cole's ridiculous analogy! What a loon....
But the REAL test is, is she pallin' around with terrorists? I don't think anyone has stooped so low as to say something like that.
Sapwolf,
Thanks for sharing the pictures and the story. Yes, she is definitely the leader of the Tea Party movement. They have no leader at the moment and she is the leader they need.
lol the more these moonbats screech a holler about Sarah Palin the more they come to resemble a pack of angry howler monkeys throwing a temper tantrum and flinging their crap all over the place.
I always find it amusing when people try to compare Sarah Palin with some Islamic extremists. They frequently refer to her as 'Taliban' at the Huff Post. Yet do they seriously imagine that the Mullahs of Iran or the Taliban would tolerate a woman like Sarah in any position of power. Especially a woman who among other things, has fought against restrictive liqour laws, has vetoed attempts to rescind certain rights of gay couples, and prepared one of the most ambitious green energy programmes. The mind boggles.
I'm so confused. Is Sarah Palin a shrewd, calculating, right-wing subversive, or is she just some dumb trailer park beauty queen from the hinterlands? The haters are a little schizophrenic it seems. They really need to get on the same page with their Palin-bashing memes; I feel like I have whiplash. Whatever is politically expedient at the moment, I guess.
MsLiberty ... that is hilarious!
So true. They can't decide whether Sarah is Hitler in a skirt or Ellie Mae Clampett!
Kinda hard to be both, isn't it? But you gotta give them credit for trying.
In truth, the Left sees the "government" as synonymous with the people. The Right sees the government (as the Founding Fathers did) as a necessary evil inflicted in a limited way on free PEOPLE.
Therein lies the fundamental difference in communicating effectively with mad liberals:
When we say lower taxes - they say: you're taking away money from "THE PEOPLE" and giving it to the rich. Huh?
When Sarah says: Government should stay away from the people's right to bear arms, libs think: "This woman wants a private militia to terrorize the PEOPLE."
I'm so glad I stopped being a liberal. It's really been a liberating decision :-)

Again the left recognizes the presidential potential of Palin which gives them revulsions. Why can't those on the right see this?
Unbelievable.
The MSM meltdown continues.
Sapwolf: Totally enjoyed and appreciate the photo's you posted.
Pardon me Palinistas but I MUST say this about who EVER this NOBODY is that compared Sarah to that NUTBALLOBOTLOVER from IRAN!
what a HUGEEEEEEEEE MOFO!!!
if he was w/in 10 ft of me I'd slap him silly!
Sapwolf
Great shots! Good to see all that going on! I wish I wasn't disabled I'd be out there with you!
Love the picture of the Obamonopoly game

quite apropos
So let me get this straight.
President Obama pals around with a terrorist.
President Obama says he will meet with any little man dictators without preconditions.
President Obama is basically wanting to "rule" our country like a dictator.
But Governor Palin is the one who reminds this nobody of a dictator?
Got it. (ahem) coughing into hand, "Obama voter."
Since Palin is no longer governor and off the public stage...why is the media still writing about her? If she doesn't matter, why would Slate waste valuable space that can be used to sell ObamaCare on Sarah Palin?
I can see it now headlines read, Obama to negotiate,
sarah rocks!
Ridiculous, but this is Salon for you, who were in a competition to how who posted the crazyiest stuff during the election, about Sarah including I kid you not, a piece illustrated with her in a
dominatrix costume with a moose, and a riding crop, I wish I were making this up. The nicest public
spirited 'girl next door'type, and that's what they saw in her, because she dared to challenge Obama,
So on to more pressing matter, what color for the uniforms of the Akhanitsa home guard (LOL)
Is he supposed to qualify as an example of the intellectual elite?
Because I gotta tell ya...that looks like utter drivel to me.
I know, I know. I'm just a southern gal from NE Tennessee. So what do I know?
Well Palin did have her church firebombed with children inside and muslims burn churches and Christians. I guess I need Professor Skip-to-my-race "Tricycle" Gates to explain it to me.
Apparently, Cole is just doubling down on the stupid, from last fall:
http://infidelsarecool.com/2008/09/09/juan-cole-whats-the-difference-between-palin-and-muslim-terroristslipstick/
I've been following a number of Iranian protesters on Twitter, and they say the current crop of Basij speak mostly Arabic (unlike most Iranians, who speak Farsi). So the implication is that they're guns for hire imported from some other country.
What this does to his silly comparison, I don't know exactly. But it certainly doesn't help.
