DNC Controlled Public Policy Polling Conducts Survey to Smear Palin as a "Birther"

PPP:

The birthers love them some Sarah Palin. She's the most popular politician in the mix with them at 66% favorability. Next is Mike Huckabee at 58%, followed by Newt Gingrich at 46%, and Mitt Romney at 43%.

[...]

Remember when W. said 'some people call you the elites, I call you my base?' Swap out birthers for elites and you've got the makings of a great Palin speech.

Disgusting. Here is the contact info for the author of the post:

Contact Tom Jensen at tomj@publicpolicypolling.com

C4P Contributor Stephen gives us this reminder:

The problem, Republicans say, is that PPP is no impartial observer. The firm makes its money by serving as the pollster to an exclusively Democratic roster of clients, ranging from members of Congress to dozens of state legislative and city council candidates. And CEO Dean Debnam has given generously to North Carolina Democratic candidates — including in races where his firm has conducted independent polling.

In the heat of last year’s competitive Senate race between former Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) and Democrat Kay Hagan, Debnam donated $5,400 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. He also made two $2,300 contributions to Hagan’s campaign.

Update by Hal: Apparently PPP has been getting hammered with emails about this ridiculous poll and one or more of our loyal readers made them aware of this post because we got linked back in this tweet I received from them a little while ago:
uh oh made the Palin people mad- http://tinyurl.com/l7dths - already getting nutty e-mails, will post on blog over the weekend

So now Palin supporters are nutty and send nutty emails? Maybe it's just the fact that Palin has a strong army of supporters on the net who think this is a really stupid poll. This snarky tweet clearly is an indication of where PPP's alliances are -- deep in the pockets of the Democrat Party. It will be interesting to see what their "blog post" about this will be over the weekend.

Brandon August 21, 2009 4:36 PM

I agree w/ 'Wisetrog'. I think Tom Jensen (the guy running their blog at publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com) is going to lose a little credibility if he continues to go out of his way to Palin/Republican bash. It seriously takes away from the legitimacy of his polls, whether he thinks it should or not.

But you should all go and check out the comment section on his birther post - he's being ripped a new one by several people pointing out his hypocrisy. Sarah definitely seems to have some allies at that blog site.

Sapwolf August 21, 2009 4:48 PM

PPP's purpose is to use polling to manipulate public opinion in favor of the Democratics.

I read too many posts here at C4P by people upset about Sarah's polling numbers, etc.

Only Rasmussen matters.

Regarding other polls, keep analyzing where their procedures are wrong or mention those that back them.

We all know, because we are on the ground, that Sarah would not lose to Obama by 20 points. She is probably anywhere from 4-9 % behind him without even trying.

Don't let bogus polls discourage you.

Sift through the facts and then communicate them to others.

PPP is run by Bill Clinton's former pollster, who then went on to be Al Gore's pollster, then John Kerry's. Why anyone would think that PPP is anything but a democrat operation is beyond me. I don't pay much attention to PPP. During the election they had
0bama ahead by about 13 points on election day, and we know it wasn't anywhere near that. It's all part of the psychological warfare being waged against republicans in general and Palin in particular. I wouldn't even post any of their poll results on C4P.

Sorry if I misunderstood you. Yes, it is extremely frustrating to me that virtually all the friends I have w/ post grad degrees are die hard Obama supporters. If we are supposed to be so smart, why are we so stupid lol..

BTW, for all, PPP feels it necessary to tweet about Palin supporters and link to this post:

ppppolls: uh oh made the Palin people mad- http://tinyurl.com/l7dths - already getting nutty e-mails, will post on blog over the weekend

I would bet they got HAMMERED with emails about this poll. And some of the emails obviously had JR's post included. I think this is a first for c4p, to be linked by a polling outfit.

techno August 21, 2009 5:45 PM

If you look at the polls taken from April to July you will see a measure of consistency in the poll numbers for the 4 GOP candidates but when Sarah hit 47/45 in her favorables/unfavorables in July I suspected something was up and I thought to myself that this result above all others cannot be allowed to stand.

If I did not know better I think PPP knew going into the poll that the weakest category for Palin would be among post-grads (elitists). By allowing 35% of post-grads to take part in the survey rather than the expected 17% (2008 exit polls)PPP, after the data was sorted, knew beforehand, that Sarah's unfavorables would be enhanced and her favorables lowered considerably to get the result that the Democratic Party wanted: the Huckster on the rise against Obama and Palin floundering and to make it appear to voters that Americans were apparently abandoning her in droves.

Fortunately the Economist poll and the Zogby polls came out yesterday as well which both show Obama is not doing as well as PPP made him out to be and that Economist poll definitely shows that Palin commands the support of both 3/4 of Republicans and 3/4 conservatives and also showed Palin with the support of 44% of independent voters.

Yes, I did think something would be amiss in August to reduce Sarah's numbers but I didn't think PPP would be so blatant in doing so by listing educational categories for the first time. There is where they made their crucial error IMHO.

Hannity is in Cincinnati today, doing the radio program from the sit of the Freedom Concert tonight.

Someone in the crowd stood up and asked him what he thought about a Hannity/Palin ticket.

The cheers went up load and long.

He demurred from running himself, but he went on to once again back up Sarah on the "death panels" citing the VA death book.

Then he said he communicated with Gov. Palin recently, and said she is a real rock star who will be a big player in the years to come.

Folks, Sarah might pop up on Hannity's TV show next month.

What else would they be talking about?

It is getting time for her to appear on TV again.

Look for some interviews in September, IMHO.

Hal August 21, 2009 5:53 PM

That is a good point Techno. I looked at the JPEG that AlB posted yesterday and it is amazing what an outlier that July poll appears to be.

Not only w/ the education levels, but the 18-29 age range and Hispanic demo. So the question is, is this current PPP poll more inline w/ the non-July trends or are Palin's numbers trending upward and PPP just wanted to subdue them when they were seeing the trend. I submit as you said the latter is the case.

wisetrog August 21, 2009 6:00 PM

techno n hal, the trend of suppressing her support began by ABC News poll. once that cat was out of the bag, the others saw and caught the virus on. they've changed their samples to fit the desired results. BTW, where are these new polls mentioned? Haven't seen them discussed in the comments. :(

Brian72 August 21, 2009 6:29 PM

I have noticed that Rush, Hannity and Levin have stood behind Sarah's "death panels" comment without wavering an inch, pretty much everyday since it came out.

Krauthammer agrees with her point, just finds the method of making the point to be disagreeable.

They agree on the issue, but disagree on how to discuss it.

It's a little Beltwayitis for Krauthammer.
I still like Krauthammer, I think he's got a blind spot about Sarah though.

PPP observes:

The birthers love them some Sarah Palin. She's the most popular politician in the mix with them at 66% favorability.

Esquire observes:

In an informal Esquire survey, three out of four white supremacists prefer Obama.

So, PPP, are readers supposed to draw some inference about a politician based on fringe groups that support that politician?

techno August 21, 2009 7:17 PM

Hal:

As you know a month or two ago I predicted that the Obama war room, the MSM, and its surrogates would be abandoning the unsophisticated, dumb, incompetent lowbrow meme in favor of an erratic, unstable, crazy as a loon narrative to politically diminish and marginalize Sarah Palin and my prediction has come true.

With Palin herself out of the spotlight and her supporters now in the center of a minor controversy with PPP, it stands to reason PPP would pull the 'nutty' card out of the Democratic playbook to malign the supporters of Sarah Palin.

There are three reasons for them to do so:

1)To associate Sarah Palin with 'extremism' and 'birtherism' which is considered by moderates as extremism and thus deem her unelectable

2)To hopefully bleed away her supporters who do not consider themselves 'nutty' or do not want to be associated with those Palinistas who are more fanatical

3)To prevent fence-sitters, moderates and independents from considering a Palin candidacy because of #1 or #2

Now why has the Far Left abandoned the stupid narrative created in 2008. Unfortunately for them there is too much evidence to the contrary, including Sarah's timely Facebook posts, that prove she is smart, savvy and incisive, certainly not the mark of somebody who lacks brain cells or IQ.

kenn August 21, 2009 7:20 PM

One typical trick of the "left" is to pose themselves equal but opposite the agenda they want to defeat and get the "other side" to accept their vernacular. In this light, we now have the truly idiotic notion that "birthers" are equal to but politically opposite from abortionists.

So coined "birthers" are in fact NATURAL, and without birth none of us would exist. Abortion leads to EXTINCTION while birth leads to LIFE; one is POSITIVE affirmation, while the other is NEGATIVE denial! Birth IS, while abortion is NOT.

Alexonian August 21, 2009 7:32 PM

Kenn,

Go read the Esquire link.

The point here is that these WS support Obama because they see in him something that they can identify with. If we played by the PPP rules then we should look less favorably on Obama because of the views of some of his supporters. PPP is trying to smear Sarah by pointing out her support in the birther movement. If they want to play that game, then let them condemn Obama for drawing support from White Supremacists.

I won't be holding my breath waiting for consistent standards being applied.

Puma for Life August 21, 2009 7:33 PM

I live in North Carolina and I have been trying to tell you guys that PPP purposely stacks their polls to get the results they want. They did this with Hillary. When it suddenly looked like she was doing better than she should be doing, they changed their methodology to include more African Americans. They did this change in methodolgy OVERNIGHT. One day she was winning, the next losing. Do not pay any attention to them other than to expose their bias.

techno August 21, 2009 7:39 PM

A couple of days ago I responded to a questioner who asked about how far along Sarah is to developing a 'kitchen cabinet'.

I proposed the argument that Sarah is already in the process of assembling one, but the key difference between Reagan's which he met with him on a continuing basis in person, and Palin's would be that Palin would be contacting and communicating with them over the Internet without any face-to-face contact.

What if Palin has already brought Rush, Sean and Mark and John Ziegler into her tent, her kitchen cabinet, and has been now for several weeks commnicating with them via e mail, blackberries, chat rooms etc in an exchange of ideas with them providing feedback for her ideas, information she could use to further her cause, or other people she should contact on a similar basis.

Ziegler even alluded to that in one of his broadcasts that he had communicated via e-mail an idea that Sarah had chosen had decided not to act on yet, but he hoped she would eventually.

I have no way of knowing this as a fact but I ask you is it conceivable?

By the way this is NOT top-secret info: if I thought of this possibility, the brains at the Obama war room must have brainstormed the idea several times by now.

Remember always read the tea leaves: Ziegler leaves talk radio unexpectedly, Hannity mentions he has 'communicated with Palin recently', Palin is photographed holding Mark Levin's book Liberty and Tyranny, and Rush is pushing the 'death panels' hard.

PPP Can Not Smear Sarah As A 'pro-Constitution birther'...

It appears that PPP is doing Obama's disinformation work because 'birther' is as honorable a descriptive word as 'redneck' is.

A 'redneck' is/has a redneck because the sun turns the back of the neck red when the person is working outside... a work redneck is GOOD.

A 'birther' is a birther because the constitution is the source document for the definition of 'natural born' citizen... 'birther' is a GOOD word.

Which is more honorable, to be called a 'pro-Constitution birther' because the text is the source document or to be called a 'pro-Obama birther' because the Obama 'birther' said the teleprompter says so... hmmmm?

Sarah can NOT be smeared with the appelation of 'pro-Constitutional birther' because it is truth... deal with it 'pro-Obama birther' PPP.

Maybe PPP should do a poll about whether or not the 'pro-Obama birther' teleprompter is believed by the the majority of the Obama 'birthers.'

We need to take back control of the language by using 'birther' the right way.

techno August 22, 2009 4:21 AM

PPP up to now had not been snarky towards Sarah but with the latest blog calling Palin supporters "nutty" I do detect that they are no longer to be trusted.

I think they know that Sarah's credibility must be taken down several notches; she is just too influential now in the debate over Obamacare.

But one thing PPP does not want to do is shoot their credibility altogether; thus they cannot show her with less than a 38 F in my opinion but by the same token there is no way they can show Palin close to Obama in favorables/unfavorables even if other pollsters like Rasmussen might do so in the near future.

MWN August 22, 2009 4:41 AM

Most of those "nutty" emails will be sent by liberals trying to smear Palin supporters.

That's on page 1 of their playbook.
