Frum Effectively Concedes He Has Little Influence

Politico conducted an interview recently with David Frum, former speechwriter for George W. Bush and a vigorous critic of Governor Palin, about the progress of his new project, the New Majority, a website that is allegedly "dedicated to the modernization and renewal of the Republican party and the conservative movement."

In the interview, Frum effectively concedes that his New Majority project thus far has had little success in accomplishing its stated goals.

"[T]he Internet is proving to be a little more complicated than Frum first thought it would be, he says. He admits to shortcomings in his Web acumen, and NewMajority.com has already undergone a redesign since it went online. The site has gotten about 800,000 unique visitors. By comparison, the conservative site Townhall.com receives 2 million unique visitors per month.

“I would like more, obviously,” Frum demurs.

“If you go to a consultant,” he continues, “the reason they will tell you that my project faces some daunting challenges is that the people who want to read most about politics are those with the most extreme views.”

While that may be true, he views the situation from another angle. “Maybe it’s true that people with less extreme views who are also interested in public affairs have been driven out by a marketplace that doesn’t offer them anything of the tone they want to listen to,” he says.

Some in the conservative cognoscente praise Frum’s intellect and efforts, but that’s where the anointing of the New Majority ends. You can count on a fingerless hand the big-name conservatives who have publicly joined the crusade. So far, Frum’s site has become an intellectual way station of college students, unknown politicos and anonymous scribes.

“Frum is smart, and the site is young,” says National Review’s Ramesh Ponnuru, a former colleague. “But so far, it has not made much of a splash. He has gotten some attention from journalists, but the site isn’t yet a must-read for anyone.”

Frum is sort of right about why his project has had little to no influence thus far: there is no marketplace at the moment for his belief that for the Republican Party to succeed, it must move to the middle on fiscal, economic, and cultural issues. There is no need in the marketplace for a New Majority-type project when Republicans currently lead their Democrat counterparts on the generic ballot by a healthy margin for the first time in many years. Barack Obama is one of the most unpopular presidents since the New Deal at this stage through his presidency. One of the greatest ironies about Frum's failure is that he asserted the following in a lightly-read blog post:

The worse conservatives do, the more important Rush becomes as leader of the ardent remnant. The better conservatives succeed, the more we become a broad national governing coalition, the more Rush will be sidelined.

Frum must have accidentally inserted Rush's name for his name because it's pretty clear from the data cited above that conservatives are succeeding and people like Rush Limbaugh remain more prominent than ever. It's not people like Rush (of whom I am actually not a fan) who have been sidelined in the midst of this conservative and Republican comeback, but rather it's people like Frum and Bruce Bartlett who have seen their voices become increasingly irrelevant as poll after poll shows Republicans and conservatives on the upswing. By the way Bruce, Republicans are not just projected to win "a few congressional" seats as you conceded in your last angry column (I thought Frum was against anger?), but you may want to check in with Charlie Cook and liberal poll "analyst" Nate Silver to see how good the landscape looks for Republicans, a prospect that is clearly detrimental to your cause. Ironically, contrary to Frum's assertion about Rush Limbaugh, the fortunes of New Majority-type projects are seemingly tied directly to the success of the Democrat Party and liberals.

In addition to whining about how much his project has failed, Frum also talks a little bit about Governor Palin in this interview:

“Why were conservatives vulnerable to somebody like this?” Frum mused about Palin recently in an interview with POLITICO. “The things that prevented them from seeing her are all still there. And we see them during this health care debate.”

That Frum would continue to focus on Palin in such a fashion is another reason why New Majority has flopped. In order for Frum's project to have succeeded, he needed to convince Republicans and conservatives that his path represented the path back to glory for the party and movement. One way he could have succeeded in convincing conservatives and Republicans that his ideas had merit was to find a spokesperson who was viewed overwhelmingly in a favorable manner by conservatives and Republicans. Such a spokesperson would then be able to speak with a lot more authority than Frum to conservatives and Republicans as to the alleged need to go in another direction. The task for Frum would have been to convince this person who was viewed in an overwhelmingly favorable manner by conservatives and Republicans in the strength of his ideas.

Ace knew precisely the person Frum should have sought:

If Frum's real goal is to help the party, and he thinks Sarah Palin is a empty-headed dolt who will say whatever the political script requires, wouldn't it be in his own best interest to actually win over the mainstream of conservative thought so that Sarah Palin regurgitates all the hard thinkin' Frum's done for her? Surely Frum is aware that is charisma is for **** -- even if he assumes (as he does) he's the brains of this operation, surely he can't be so self-deluded as to imagine he'd make a capable faceman.

So why is he hellbent on personally destroying those with charisma and audience? Why on earth wouldn't he want to retain the services of these brain-dead but smooth-talking troglodytes but enlist them in his own cause?

Now, it's likely that Governor Palin would have politely rejected such a proposal from Frum. However, that Frum didn't even make the effort to ask the person who is viewed more favorably by Republicans and conservatives than any other politician in the country whether she was interested in his project suggests to me that the New Majority was destined to stay the New Minority from the start.

Disclaimer: This post does not claim that the New Majority lacks quality writers or does not present some good ideas for the party's future.

Update: Since January, Conservatives 4 Palin has had 1,770,673 visits, twice the number claimed by David Frum's New Majority. Keep in mind too that Joseph Russo started this blog with $10 while Frum soliticited professional advice and promoted the debut of New Majority heavily in the political and conservative blogosphere. Just sayin' (no, not the commentator).

Doesn't surprise me at all.

I have nothing against Frum's website but this notion that the reason why the GOP has lost the past two elections (badly) is because if it's staunch conservative base is asinine.

And furthermore, not only is that notion asinine but how the moderates conducted themselves in the final days of the campaign until now has been even more disgraceful.

People like Frum, and Mike Murphy think it's all Sarah Palin's fault for the reason why the elections were lost forgetting to realize that that the reason why they lost elections is because people like Murphy, Frum and that nerd boy Rich Lowry had way too much influence in the part. The GOP will always be the party of the conservative.

The most damage inflicted on Obama's two biggest priorities; Gitmo and Health Care have been cause by those right-wing simpletons Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin (thanks to C4P for posting that tidbit).

Mitt Romney did nothing, Tim Pawlenty did nothing, Michael Steele did nothing. In fact no elected politician from the Republican party did anything to stop this. They just positioned themselves to benefit in 2010 while Darth Vader and Hockey Mom did the dirty work in order to take some of the burden of insults off those "Tea Party" patriots who were just trying to do what their own elected officials failed to do...defend the Constitution.

People like David Frum and the other MSM pundits are already trying to define to the people who your leaders should be when that responsibilty of defining their leaders is solely OURS.

So they can brand the Meghan McCain and Joe Scarborough as OUR leader but it doesn't fly because we know that one is a Republican Paris Hilton and the other is a sellout MSNBC anchor and nobody can ever justify otherwise.

There are more Sarah Palins in this country than there are washed-up speechwriters and political strategists and the sooner David Frum gets this the more likely his beloved party can win elections on their own principles and ideas as supposed to winning by default because the other party sucks.

OT
I just read Vanity Fair...what he said is a rehash of old stuff just added a new word and a bit more so called information...He is really sad...does he really not think that one day his son will read all the hurtful things he has said...I wonder if he could not get a book deal and this is the best he could do...from him she was not a hockey mom, neither Todd nor she cooks on , the kids had to do all the work around the house...on and on...

I am hoping that when it comes out JR or RAM will take it apart...like only they can...you know I feel he thinks he can get away with what he says because the Palin's are not going to do anything to him because of Tripp...

Just Sayin September 2, 2009 4:38 AM

Just Sayin indeed. haha!

Good Stuff. You know, David Frum is sort of like a general without an army imo. I don't always understand what he's all about but he definitely likes to be heard.

Sapwolf September 2, 2009 6:10 AM

Frum is so out-of-touch with Americans and what is REALLY happening in this country, that I almost feel sorry for him.

He epitomizes the educated person who lacks the ability to see things as they truly are.

I was at his website over a month ago and the first thing I noticed was the very few comments.

It was a ghost town.

He has no clue that the reason why people left the GOP was not because they are liberal, but because they are fiscal conservatives and not for over-extending the military.

The Dems have also made that miscalculation too.

The Indies lean much more conservative/libertarian than they all think.

We know that, because we see it at the ground level.

We can see the planets aligning for Gov. Palin to inherit the Tea Party Movement and become the Anti-Obama.

Frum can't face it because he is such as imperial elitist.

Bill in Baltimore September 2, 2009 6:44 AM

I wonder how much he did pay for this site, a tad more than $10 I bet.

At first glance at the site (scrolling through), it didn't strike me as a conservative or even Republican site.

TangledThorns September 2, 2009 7:18 AM

I don't plan on visiting Frum's site as its geared towards the conservative elite.

Let's shine some light on the secret operation from the most transparent administration in history, shall we?

Uber,

I read the link you posted on spidering Facebook, Youtube, etc.

pretty scary.

can u post that on the Open Thread ?

Whitney The Pipsqueak September 2, 2009 7:51 AM

I like one of the first lines of the Politico article:

"the Palin problem is still with us"

Ha!

Darn right, David!

It's just that most of us see her as a "blessing" not a "problem"!

section9 September 2, 2009 8:22 AM

Frum is representative of that tendency in the GOP to take Democratic arguments both personally and seriously and look for something seriously wrong with conservatism itself, and then roll over and play dead. Bruce Bartlett is a perfect example of this kind of GOPer.

Remember that for some forty years after WWII, the GOP was dominated by its "Me Too" wing, which didn't provide a credible, rational alternative to the New Deal. Noonan, Murphy, and Frum represent that wing, although they would insist they are the inheritors of the True Reagan Faith.

The entire Bush the Younger Administration was a flight from Reaganism. Unfortunately, conservatives all too many times allowed themselves to be blamed for Bush's transgressions. People like Bartlett want the GOP to do penance for Bush's sins.

Palin, for her part, wants no part of any penance. She sees Bush and Obama for what they are, part of the same continuum of reckless spending and bad governance. That's why the poltiical class hates her: she won't back down and play along.

So they call her names.

One last thing, given the Levi piece in Vanity Fair today: isn't Levi in boot camp yet? (warning: first ten minutes of Full Metal Jacket...only the best for Levi....).

For a simpleton like me, what is "spidering" on the Internet?

LT September 2, 2009 9:04 AM

About Frum's take on Rush as a far rightwinger. I grant he is polemic. However, take away his "showmanship" and objectively look at his positions - issue by issue. How are they right wing? Down the line its the standard boilerplate Republican platform (although few in the GOP actually adhere to it). I'd like to see Frum's position on each issue.

It's the data mining that they said we couldnt do to terrorists
because American citizens would
be ensnared. I know you are surprised too

One thing I've noticed about New Majority, the troll traps have to be cleaned out, like the bug warrens on Klendathu. I tell you
"Mean Girls" has turned to be an ironic guide to all of this. The
Plastics/Heathers are supposed to be in charge.

Lipstick September 2, 2009 9:18 AM

I try to not use insults but Frum is an idiot. I don't give any rat legs what he says.

Bill in Baltimore September 2, 2009 9:55 AM

techno,

"spidering" is crawling through the web to find things.

search engines "trawl" throughout the day to find new content on the web, and (who knows how) they then use that when you search.

So the WH is going to be trolling for someone saying bad things about them - - - to your point of what BHO is up to.

I was going to say cool it a bit, as this is a SP site, but maybe not. What all of us are doing are sounding the toll of the bell in one fashion or another

bpk1300 September 2, 2009 10:11 AM

Mornin'

Just a quick fact. Of course, David Frum is out of touch with what is going on in the USA. He was born and raised in Canada. His mother is Barbara Frum, "noted" Canadian Broadcasting Host. If you have ever listened to the CBC, the liberal bias will make you hurl.

David Frum has had his 15 minutes of fame. Full disclosure--I am a Canadian

CharterOakie September 2, 2009 10:12 AM

Frumpie, like Noonan et al., becomes more irrelevant each day.

The ship has set sail. Those people aren't on board because they never found the port.

Chrisin206 @3:44 - well said.

Dan C September 2, 2009 10:44 AM

I read one of Frum's books, "an end to evil" and I have to say it was god awful and quite sophmoric.

Frum does not have a command of the facts. He ignores that we just had the most moderate nominee ever and he lost.

He ignores that rasmussen has Obama at 45% as of yesterday and the GOP UP in the generic ballot.

So, did the GOP moderate in the last 6 months? NO, they had cheney and Palin firing broadsides, two people that Frum does not want at the head of the table. Not to mention the talk radio assault.

His logic is a joke.

Dave C September 2, 2009 10:50 AM

Frum will keep receiving and accepting invites from the network round table shows, however.. no matter how badly his performance is.
Think someone like Ed Morissey will end up on 'This Week'?

Frum fits the narrative of the liberal media for the token conservative. Someone with an 'R' behind their name who jabs their thumb in the eye of conservatism.

katiejane September 2, 2009 11:49 AM

Why were conservatives vulnerable to somebody like this?” Frum mused about Palin recently in an interview with POLITICO

Frum should perhaps consider that the answer to his question is that Conservatives have fionally realized that talking heads like he is are little more than Democrat-lite. He has little understanding of anyone outside his whiney circle and still operates under the belief that the "little speople" should just think & do what their "betters" want them to do. The man is prsiding over his own descent into insignificance and he can't stand it.

Harrison September 2, 2009 1:01 PM

I have never heard of New Majority and have never visited it either. I am a political junky that visits multiple blogs, Freerepublic and other Conservative sites. I link to C4P and other sites from my blog and visit at least once a day.

If I want a bunch of liberal talking points, I can turn on CNN or listen to NPR or even visit New Majority. But that crap is exactly why the country is suffering right now.

I want something different. I want to hear/read material from people that agree with me that we need LESS government. We need REAL change.

T. D. September 2, 2009 6:20 PM

"It’s a humble start, but Frum is willing to press on despite the odds. 'The question is,' he says, 'how many intervening elections will we lose before they listen to the kinds of things people like me are saying?'"

I guess we'll have proof for Frum on the importance of listening to him by what happens in the 2010 election.

Maybe he shouldn't have quit his day job at NR.
