Going Rogue: An American Life

According to the Associated Press, Governor Palin has completed her memoir, titled Going Rogue: An American Life. Her publisher has pushed the release date to November 17th.

Harper publisher Jonathan Burnham says the former Alaska governor invested herself deeply and passionately in the project. He says the book contains fascinating detail.

The 400-page book is the first for Palin, who has been an object of fascination since Republican Sen. John McCain chose her as his running mate during his 2008 presidential bid. The book will be called "Going Rogue: An American Life."

Update by Hal: Here is more from Politico:

Sarah Palin’s publisher plans to announce Tuesday that the title of her eagerly awaited memoir will be “Going Rogue: An American Life.”

Publication is being moved up from spring to Nov. 17 in order to catch the holiday book-buying season. The former Alaska governor has been in huge demand as a speaker, and continues to harvest a bounty of media attention.

A mammoth first printing of 1.5 million copies has been ordered — the same first run as “True Compass,” the memoir of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Palin had a deadline of Sept. 15 for her manuscript and turned it in a bit early. Copy-editing and fact-checking are now underway in a race to meet the crash publishing schedule, which has been accelerated four or five months because of the huge anticipated demand.

After Palin left office on July 26, she went with her husband, Todd, and her kids to San Diego, the home of her collaborator, Lynn Vincent, and worked on the book for several weeks.

Later, Palin spent several days in New York, going over the final edits.

Palin mischievously embraced the phrase “going rogue” at the end of her troubled campaign for vice president on the ticket headed by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz).

The title is awesome! Remember when the McCain staffers were accusing her of "going rogue" 10 days before the election?

Anonymoose September 28, 2009 5:55 PM

Heh. She used one of the media's spin phrases as the title of her book. Clever way to throw it back in their faces.

"I can see the bestseller's list from my writing desk."

(And where would I sign up for that honor?...)

"Going Rogue." I love it. Much better than my pick, "With a Servant's Heart." Definitely suggests a different tone.

This means the book tour is happening soon, right?

Andrew September 28, 2009 6:00 PM

Interesting. It wasn't suppose to be finished until next Spring--either it's going to be really awesome, or it's going to be really disappointing. Wonder why she rushed on it.

Yet again Governor Palin beats conventional wisdom.
Think about all the names that were suggested, I don’t remember them all so I won’t go into it, but Going Rogue is so not what was expected.
I love the release push up, first it won’t coincide with the release of Dick Cheney or George W Bush also it means we won’t have to wait till the spring for her to start her book tour and her message gets going this year already.
Also by having the book released close to 6 months earlier shows how committed Gov. Palin is to anything she takes on herself.

Bean Counter September 28, 2009 6:04 PM

Well, crap, I spoke too soon. Just read that the e-book edition won't be available until 12/26 so it won't cut into the more expensive hardcover sales.

Not to worry, though, I've got a book store across the street. I'll be at the door when they open.

Jane Austen September 28, 2009 6:04 PM

Yup...I don't need drugs to get high- I only need good news from Sarah Palin!

OMGsh, I feel so hyper. And dizzy. And light-headed.

-Jane

Nat Hound September 28, 2009 6:04 PM

The other great thing is that the initial scheduling had Romney's book out in March, Sarah's in April.

Believe me, if the book was going to be a disappointment, her editors would have sent her and Lynn Vincent back to the drawing board.

It's much more likely that the publishers know it is going to be the book of the year, and want it out in time for holiday giving...

Bean Counter September 28, 2009 6:05 PM

Another story:

NEW YORK – That was fast.

Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate, has finished her memoir just four months after the book deal was announced, and the release date has been moved up from the spring to Nov. 17, her publisher said.

"Governor Palin has been unbelievably conscientious and hands-on at every stage, investing herself deeply and passionately in this project," Jonathan Burnham, publisher of Harper, said Sunday. "It's her words, her life, and it's all there in full and fascinating detail."

Palin's book, her first, will be 400 pages, said Burnham, who called the fall "the best possible time for a major book of this kind."

The book now has a title, one fitting for a public figure known for the unexpected — "Going Rogue: An American Life."

Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins, has commissioned a huge first printing of 1.5 million copies. Sen. Ted Kennedy's "True Compass," published by Twelve soon after his Aug. 25 death, also had a 1.5 million first printing.

As with the Kennedy book, the e-edition of Palin's memoir will not be released at the same time as the hardcover. "Going Rogue" will not be available as an e-book until Dec. 26 because "we want to maximize hardcover sales over the holidays," Harper spokeswoman Tina Andreadis said.

Publishers have been concerned that e-books, rapidly becoming more popular, might take away sales from hardcover editions, which are more expensive.

Palin, who abruptly resigned as Alaska governor over the summer with more than a year left in her first term, has been an object of fascination since Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate in 2008, chose her as his running mate, making an instant celebrity out of a once-obscure public official.

Although Democrat Barack Obama easily won the election and Palin was criticized even by some Republicans for being inexperienced, she remains a favorite among conservatives and is a rumored contender for 2012. Interest in her is so high that a fan recently paid $63,500 to have dinner with her, part of an Internet auction for a charity that aids wounded veterans.

Palin, 45, spent weeks in San Diego shortly after leaving office and worked on the manuscript with collaborator Lynn Vincent, a person close to her said. She was joined in San Diego by her family and her top aide, Meghan Stapleton, then spent several weeks in New York working around the clock with editors at Harper, said the person, who wasn't authorized to comment and asked not to be identified.

JeanA September 28, 2009 6:16 PM

400 pages this Nov.

Are you joking?

That doesn't leave enough time to promote the book.

We want this book to break records.

It takes time to promote and market a book. To set-up interviews and travel around the country.

What is the rush?

JohnDoeAt30Below September 28, 2009 6:16 PM

The original plan was for the book to come out next spring but that was structured around the idea that Palin would still be Governor and would have limited time to write and even more limited time to work the promotional side. Once she resigned, she devoted herself to the book full time. In turn, this explains why her public profile has been so low and her only contact has been through FaceBook. Now that the book date is announced, that would mean that she has finished the manuscript and signed off on all the galleys.

Hang on to your hats, she's shifting into high gear now.

Recovering Democrat September 28, 2009 6:18 PM

That's the thing about Sarah ... she doesn't put things off. She accomplished all her goals in Alaska in basically her first year and a half in office.

And remember how Obama couldn't finish his first memoir, and was forced to give back his advance before being bailed out by another contract and his friendship with the ever-helpful domestic terrorist guy in his neighborhood?

Obama didn't even have five kids as an excuse for taking years to write his memoir.

Sarah is AMAZING!

p.s. The title will make heads explode. Of course, "rogue" has the following not so good meanings, so we can assume that Sarah doesn't mean these?????

1 : vagrant, tramp
2 : a dishonest or worthless person : scoundrel
3 : a mischievous person : scamp
4 : a horse inclined to shirk or misbehave
5 : an individual exhibiting a chance and usually inferior biological variation

She finished writing the book, mind as well release it now before the holidays. Mark my words(WOW I'm sounding like Joe Biden LOL) the book will be sold out the second its in pre release..and yes, 400 pages is A LOT. Obviously she had a lot to say. Look at her facebook postings, they are never just a paragraph, she writes a thesis. She is obviously a very good writer and she already said she has a lot of journals, so it was probably a lot easier for her to write then someone starting from scratch, she already had most of the stuff written down

Lakerfanalways September 28, 2009 6:21 PM

Man, in California you don't get too much attention from national GOP figures like Palin because its a given the state goes blue. My God! I will say that she couldn't have picked a better place than San Diego as a base to write her memoirs!

Nancy September 28, 2009 6:25 PM

Going Rogue=Making a sitting president use the words "all wee-weed up."

kjanlady September 28, 2009 6:26 PM

I have a funny feeling 1.5 million copies will not be nearly enough and that there might be a reprint prior to the New Year. Wonder if there will be a New York Times Bestseller review? I don't know how many copies the Obama book has sold but I just say a copy in the bargain bin at the book store. It would kill Obama if she outsold both of his memoirs in six months.

I always buy myself a special birthday present because my birthday is less than a week before Christmas and all my life I tended to get one gift with a card "Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas". So this year's gift is a no-brainer.

I'd be willing to bet that the posts on this blog could slow down considerably for at least a couple of days after Nov. 17th as we all read her book. Next year, we'll have endless quotes from Sarah to strengthen our blog posts.

Fantastic news. I only hope her book tour brings her within a couple hundred miles so I can get an autographed copy.

Alexonian September 28, 2009 6:31 PM

She disappeared off the media radar screen over the last months, except for her facebook postings, and now she'll be back with a vengeance.

Also, many of her media appearances will be news worthy in their own regard, for instance, when she appears on Letterman to plug her book, that booking will be a media firestorm. Same with her appearance on Oprah. All of these "controversial" media bookings will drive audience numbers through the roof and subsequently book sales will take off even higher.

The ultimate goal for her shouldn't be to punish Letterman and Oprah but to make her book a success (an obligation she owes to her publisher) and to get her story out to more people. It doesn't matter if Letterman and Oprah benefit so long as people get to hear her story and read her accounts of events, which I predict, will ultimately put media bias against her on the firing line.

haiyaku September 28, 2009 6:31 PM

What's the rush? Getting this book out early frees her up for her second book. I have no doubt that she will put her common sense conservative platform in writing for a spring publish date so that it cannot be distorted by the media.

John Galt September 28, 2009 6:31 PM

This title is perfect on many levels.
She is basically taking one of the lame smear phrases used by the MSM during the election.
Not only that, but in a few months when they are talking about the record breaking sales they will have to use the phrase "going rouge" all over again. But at that time they will be using it to promote the book that liberates Palin.

The gloves have been off since she resigned, this is going to be good!

Panchita September 28, 2009 6:41 PM

Alexonian: I disagree. Sarah will sell enough without the msm. they are out to destroy her. Let them eat cake and watch her sales soar.

Levin has sold over a million with nothing except for Hannity.

Sarah should easily double that.

I'm hoping it's a "tell all", but then Sarah is not like that. lol.

Most important though is that the book is done, YEA.
Now let's get down to the important stuff like those book signings, public apperances and MOST important, those PALIN RALLYS.

LET THE FUN BEGIN!! :-)

Nancy September 28, 2009 6:42 PM

going rogue is what President Obama will be doing on Nov. 17th. Tthhaaaaaaattt sounds painful!

ellen September 28, 2009 6:43 PM

Does anyone wonder if she purposefully wants to do this near the 1 year mark since the last election?

I imagine on Nov. 4 there will be a lot of obnoxious news stories about "how history was made" one year ago... and how Palin messed it up for McCain. They will use it as another excuse to smear Palin, and then BAM a week and a half later she is the only thing anyone is talking about.

Dan C September 28, 2009 6:45 PM

I love the title. We need someone to go rogue and fix this mess! She can change the GOP and then clean up Obama's mess.

John Galt September 28, 2009 6:46 PM

The story from here is up on Hot Air and already has 93 comments almost as many as are here.

DarkGravity September 28, 2009 6:47 PM

Love the title. Fitting for these times.

Good job, Mrs. Palin.

Jane Austen September 28, 2009 6:48 PM

If somebody has the chance to get their book signed in person by her, can you tell them that Jane Austen is a very, very passionate/young supporter and can't make it but could you (Sarah) do a shout-out anyways?
Thanks :)
-Jane

John Galt September 28, 2009 6:48 PM

From Allahpundit.

I’m intrigued by the title, not only because it promises dish about the sniping from McCain staffers but because it hints, perhaps, at her positioning herself as the libertarian alternative to “orthodox” Republicans like Mitt and Huck. Meanwhile, Politico claims that “[c]opy-editing and fact-checking are now underway in a race to meet the crash publishing schedule,” a detail bound to intoxicate liberals eager to find, flag, catalogue and crow about every last typo. Exit question: Which avid audience will buy more copies, the Palin-lovers or the Palin-haters?

You know this is a brilliant move.

Gov. Palin's book will be out before all those hateful books are released and nobody will buy any of those books.

John Galt September 28, 2009 6:51 PM

The AllahPundit story has only been up 20 minutes and already it has 100 comments.

JeanA September 28, 2009 6:53 PM

I will buy two books.

One to frame and hang on the wall and the other one to pass around after sales die down.

Alexonian September 28, 2009 6:53 PM

Steven and Panchita,

1.) Her bookings on those shows will be a media circus. We might as well add in interviews with Gibson and Couric.

2.) Such appearances will put her before audiences that are not her natural constituents. These audiences believe the media generated hype. If she tells her tale without the media filter in place, she will neutralize many naysayers.

3.) When she, as I predict, handles herself well with Oprah and Letterman, and puts them in their place, then her critics' views of her as a lightweight blow up.

4.) The goal is to sell books, which a.) puts money in her pocket, b.) fulfills her obligation to her publishers, c.) gets her message out to non-fans, and d.) changes people's minds about her. Holding a grudge against Letterman and Oprah doesn't serve any purpose for her.

Holy Moly! That is exciting news. I absolutely love the title. I'm actually not surprised that the release date got moved up, though I'm really impressed that it will be ready by November. I wonder if some bookstores could be convinced to have midnight release parties. I'm way excited.

TSM Admin September 28, 2009 6:55 PM

With the book coming out now and all the book signings in the weeks after, this gets it out of the way by early next year.

That way she can concentrate on the 2010 elections and campaigning for candidates in Congress - and making other speeches and appearances.

Awesome title as her independent sounding title is a classy slap to the conservative elite and hateful left wing. I predict her book will be the highest selling nonfiction this year. Go Sarah!

terri September 28, 2009 7:00 PM

Now I want to know how in the h*ll did Sarah live "for weeks" in San Diego and for "several days" in New York City and no one recognized her???????

Was she held up in the hotel rooms?Didn't she even go get a cup of coffee????

Weird! :-)

OldDude September 28, 2009 7:01 PM

Really good news and I can't wait to read it!

kjanlady--I had the same thought about the NYTimes review--they do shun conservatives.

Yes, they will attempt to minimize her input as the author as they did with the Hong Kong speech. Why do they forget she was a journalism major...or do they? Give her a deadline and get out of the way. I think this will have outstanding sales with or without the tour.

CharterO--thanks for the additional Bible references. God Bless!

Jane Austen--checked out your new friend's site and gave it a thumbs up! Youth power unite!

Don't generally watch Glen Beck but did so today at Leslie's recommendation (definitely should be nominated for BB)and the comment was made that "women seem to be getting the big picture better than the men." I think there's a lot of truth in that.

As for "rogue" definitions, no doubt in my mind that Sarah has a "rouguish wink" that befits an impish and playful facet to her diamond!

ellen September 28, 2009 7:01 PM

hahahahhaha. I have not seen the entire movie, but I know the song you are talking about! I actually have it in my iTunes, i might just have to listen to it now.

The MSM and liberals are going to be SHOCKED as HECK to discover that Governor Sarah Palin's book will be JUST MAGNIFICENT! They will be blown away by her good sense, solid scholarship, and heart-warming decency.

Won't it be FUN, to witness their about-face and the blossoming of REAL RESPECT for her!?
And she maintained her lovely good character through all the S-H-You-Know-What they threw her during the campaign, too.

The point of the appearance isn't to make Dave or Oprah a fan. Not at all. The point is for her to walk into a hostile camp, fight fire with fire and win, and present her case, her life story, to the audience. Dave and Oprah bookings become news because they are both irrational partisan twits and Sarah shows that they don't frighten her, and in fact, she has a good chance of putting them in their place by besting them on their own turf.

Read-it-and-weep GOP, you're in for a whoopin!
As for the title?
It sounds like a publisher's pick chosen to pique the interest of friend and foe alike. To be honest, I expected something with a bit more Cuda'tude (and not McCain campaign related) but like WISETROG said, at least it isn't sappy. That would have been bad.
Title grade: B-
That said,

On a unrelated note, and take it for what it's worth, but on intrade there was big movement today towards Sarah being the Republican Nominee.

I dont want to try to make it out to be a big deal, and personally I dont put alot of stock in the intrade prediction market, but still I thought I would mention it anyways, since good news, no matter how big or small, is better than bad news.

I think her first interview will be with Hannity. If I’m not mistaken she set down first with Hannity after she was picked for VP. Hannity was also the only interview when she was in New York. Hannity is good for the first interviews as he does more conversation style walkabouts rather than a sit down interview its a relaxing way to break into the interview circuit.
