Governor Palin: Obama and the Bureaucratization of Health Care

Governor Palin pens an editorial in the Wall Street Journal:

Writing in the New York Times last month, President Barack Obama asked that Americans "talk with one another, and not over one another" as our health-care debate moves forward.

I couldn't agree more. Let's engage the other side's arguments, and let's allow Americans to decide for themselves whether the Democrats' health-care proposals should become governing law.

Some 45 years ago Ronald Reagan said that "no one in this country should be denied medical care because of a lack of funds." Each of us knows that we have an obligation to care for the old, the young and the sick. We stand strongest when we stand with the weakest among us.

We also know that our current health-care system too often burdens individuals and businesses—particularly small businesses—with crippling expenses. And we know that allowing government health-care spending to continue at current rates will only add to our ever-expanding deficit.

How can we ensure that those who need medical care receive it while also reducing health-care costs? The answers offered by Democrats in Washington all rest on one principle: that increased government involvement can solve the problem. I fundamentally disagree.

Common sense tells us that the government's attempts to solve large problems more often create new ones. Common sense also tells us that a top-down, one-size-fits-all plan will not improve the workings of a nationwide health-care system that accounts for one-sixth of our economy. And common sense tells us to be skeptical when President Obama promises that the Democrats' proposals "will provide more stability and security to every American."

With all due respect, Americans are used to this kind of sweeping promise from Washington. And we know from long experience that it's a promise Washington can't keep.

Let's talk about specifics. In his Times op-ed, the president argues that the Democrats' proposals "will finally bring skyrocketing health-care costs under control" by "cutting . . . waste and inefficiency in federal health programs like Medicare and Medicaid and in unwarranted subsidies to insurance companies . . . ."

First, ask yourself whether the government that brought us such "waste and inefficiency" and "unwarranted subsidies" in the first place can be believed when it says that this time it will get things right. The nonpartistan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) doesn't think so: Its director, Douglas Elmendorf, told the Senate Budget Committee in July that "in the legislation that has been reported we do not see the sort of fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending by a significant amount."

Now look at one way Mr. Obama wants to eliminate inefficiency and waste: He's asked Congress to create an Independent Medicare Advisory Council—an unelected, largely unaccountable group of experts charged with containing Medicare costs. In an interview with the New York Times in April, the president suggested that such a group, working outside of "normal political channels," should guide decisions regarding that "huge driver of cost . . . the chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives . . . ."

Given such statements, is it any wonder that many of the sick and elderly are concerned that the Democrats' proposals will ultimately lead to rationing of their health care by—dare I say it—death panels? Establishment voices dismissed that phrase, but it rang true for many Americans. Working through "normal political channels," they made themselves heard, and as a result Congress will likely reject a wrong-headed proposal to authorize end-of-life counseling in this cost-cutting context. But the fact remains that the Democrats' proposals would still empower unelected bureaucrats to make decisions affecting life or death health-care matters. Such government overreaching is what we've come to expect from this administration.

Speaking of government overreaching, how will the Democrats' proposals affect the deficit? The CBO estimates that the current House proposal not only won't reduce the deficit but will actually increase it by $239 billion over 10 years. Only in Washington could a plan that adds hundreds of billions to the deficit be hailed as a cost-cutting measure.

The economic effects won't be limited to abstract deficit numbers; they'll reach the wallets of everyday Americans. Should the Democrats' proposals expand health-care coverage while failing to curb health-care inflation rates, smaller paychecks will result. A new study for Watson Wyatt Worldwide by Steven Nyce and Syl Schieber concludes that if the government expands health-care coverage while health-care inflation continues to rise "the higher costs would drive disposable wages downward across most of the earnings spectrum, although the declines would be steepest for lower-earning workers." Lower wages are the last thing Americans need in these difficult economic times.

Finally, President Obama argues in his op-ed that Democrats' proposals "will provide every American with some basic consumer protections that will finally hold insurance companies accountable." Of course consumer protection sounds like a good idea. And it's true that insurance companies can be unaccountable and unresponsive institutions—much like the federal government.

That similarity makes this shift in focus seem like nothing more than an attempt to deflect attention away from the details of the Democrats' proposals—proposals that will increase our deficit, decrease our paychecks, and increase the power of unaccountable government technocrats.

Instead of poll-driven "solutions," let's talk about real health-care reform: market-oriented, patient-centered, and result-driven. As the Cato Institute's Michael Cannon and others have argued, such policies include giving all individuals the same tax benefits received by those who get coverage through their employers; providing Medicare recipients with vouchers that allow them to purchase their own coverage; reforming tort laws to potentially save billions each year in wasteful spending; and changing costly state regulations to allow people to buy insurance across state lines. Rather than another top-down government plan, let's give Americans control over their own health care.

Democrats have never seriously considered such ideas, instead rushing through their own controversial proposals. After all, they don't need Republicans to sign on: Democrats control the House, the Senate and the presidency. But if passed, the Democrats' proposals will significantly alter a large sector of our economy. They will not improve our health care. They will not save us money. And, despite what the president says, they will not "provide more stability and security to every American."

We often hear such overblown promises from Washington. With first principles in mind and with the facts in hand, tell them that this time we're not buying it.

"WOW, AGAIN" Great Job Sarah keep after them.

Sheya September 8, 2009 8:14 PM

WOW, this is a smack down. She’s just taken everyone apart from the President down. This is not just an attack she’s giving alternative solutions to health care and bringing to the front of the debate the point that the Democrats control everything and blaming Republicans won’t work. Something the RNC has so far failed to do.

I hate to say this, as I usually don’t like predicting or speculating her moves but I really believe she’s gearing up to run for President which I love.

tim c September 8, 2009 8:18 PM

Mr. President your vacation is ovah!

ShermanCT September 8, 2009 8:20 PM

Most of you asked for it and now you have it.

Sarah Palin making news before Obama talks to the nation. Will she be on his mind tomorrow night and make another stupid reference to her? I hope so!

Awesome!

Dan C September 8, 2009 8:21 PM

If Romney and Huckabee were the main players, WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY?

I do not see them demolishing this healthcare bill.

Well done, Sarah.

Let's see how much this is ignored by the MSM.

It's great to finally have a leader out there who is not afraid to stand up to the Democrats and MSM. She really is fearless. I bet this shows up on RealClearPolitics in the morning and goes viral. Obama is probably searching for a change of shorts about now.

Sorry about the visual...

Bill O’Reilly and Bernie Goldberg on Charlie Gibson’s resignation. O’Reilly believes the resignation was the result of losing viewers due to the way he treated Gov. Sarah Palin during the election interview.

An O’Reilly theory which I happen to disagree with and i would have preferred he would have not done this segment. O’Reilly likes Sarah and whenever he gets the chance to defend her he does, including this segment – so I’ll let it go on this one. Nevertheless here is the video.

Greta just announced Sarah's op ed as the tease for her show. Waves a copy and says hot off the press, Sarah goes after Obama on HealthCare.

Yeah Greta

Doug Brady September 8, 2009 9:42 PM

Krauthammer's article was unintelligible. He said she should leave the room then spent the rest of the article explaining why she was correct. JR posted about this when Krathammer wrote it.

Izzy September 8, 2009 9:42 PM

Greta just said to Hannity, she has something hot from the WSJ...Sarah taking on Obama.

Uffda September 8, 2009 9:43 PM

Maybe she was supposed to leave the room so she wouldn't rip Obama to shreds entirely.

Lakerfanalways September 8, 2009 9:44 PM

@Sheya
He won't mention her, but he sure as hell is thinking about her..CONSTANTLY..He is wee weeing himself right now. Sarah is NOT afraid to go after Obama, she has nothing to lose. She is a private citizen, just like everyone else, she can say and do whatever she pleases, and what is she doing right now..smacking down Obama..I LOVE IT!!
Hope you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend!!

Ashley September 8, 2009 9:45 PM

Great piece, she hit it out of the park. Not only did she criticize Obama's OWN words, she explained "death panels" again, hit the media establishment for their comments about "death panels", pointed out that those provisions were extracted from the bill, made it a point to note democrats are in control of everything in D.C., kept up her "we're fed up with Washington talk" and offered real solutions.

Uffda September 8, 2009 9:46 PM

Oh, no she didn't!

Oh, yes she did.

I was a little leery about that comment! I went back and forth, and then deleted it. Oh, boy.

I am a Broncos fan, BUT I'll always have a place in my heart for the Bears. Walter Payton is the best running back ever! I had a poster of him on my wall for years growing up.
I was really torn when the Bears went to the Super Bowl a few years ago, I had a bad feeling with Rex Grossman as quarterback, yikes. Also, I thought the Saints vs. the Colts would be a better game.
The Broncos are all messed up now, trading Jay Cutler, for Kyle Orten! I think we are in for some rebuilding. The NFC North should be fun to watch with all of the good quarterbacks.

Okay, I rambled a bit, sorry!

As a conservative health care researcher, articles like this make me giddier than David Brooks the first time he met Barack Obama.

It's almost as if Gov. Palin is saying, "liar, liar, creased pants on fire" to President Obama.

Obama to Axelrod, I thought you said she was stupid.

Palin Proud? oh yeah!

CodaCuda September 8, 2009 9:53 PM

I did my bit I posted both of Sarah's FB notes over at Hotair in the comment section. At least it got some responses and made simplsimon pee his pants.
By the way I think Sarah did great today.

Death panels - I love when she says that.
The GOP response -irrelevant.

And laying to rest any lingering doubts, this proves that Sarah reads the NYT.

Sarah is taking the lead on the areas that will define Obama's presidency.

Healthcare, Afghanistan, Energy-Cap and Trade.

Ain't she great? The other boring wannabes will be struggling to keep up/catch up, even now, 6 weeks after her resignation and involvement in national affairs.

Jenny September 8, 2009 10:03 PM

Why is Sarah not doing the GOP response tomorrow? This is such a great piece!

VidSweet September 8, 2009 10:04 PM

OMG! YAY!

Her reasoning is absolutely brilliant. Once again, I am in awe that she framed it in ways that are significant to Americans. The insurance companies are unaccountable...and whatdayaknow, so is government!!! Govt caused inefficiencies? Whatdayaknow, so will this one create redtaped bureaucracy!

I just love this line: "Such government overreaching is what we've come to expect from this administration."

THE REASON I LOVE IT is, booya, there it is, she will be running for some higher office. We know it!!!

And what a great DISTRACTOR to the normally cool Obama. BWAHAHAHA--her oped will be released on the same date that Obama will make his speech in the evening?!!!! Woo!! Attention will be once again on Palin, and people who will watch Obama show with skepticism after reading Palin's op-ed! Obama will be all wee-weed!!!

Who thinks Sarah might happen to be on TV before the dinner bids are finalized? Might raise the price a few $.

Um, President Obama, YOU, can be haunted by what Governor Palin writes on Facebook.
And YOU can be haunted by what she writes in op-eds, about your policies.
Oh, and YOU can be haunted by what she writes in the Wall Street Journal, about what YOU wrote in the New York Times.
And YOU can be haunted by what she writes about what you say, before you even say it.

It's quite the noggin exploder.

The GOP Elitists abandoned Sarah Palin a long time ago, don't ever expect them to stand up and applaud the smack down she has given to Obama. THIS is Sarahs response to Obama's speech, now this will be all the talk tomorrow, overshadowing what Obama has to say. Sarah does it again!!!
Also, who has bidded on having dinner with Sarah and Todd. I would LOVE to go, OMG I wouldn't even eat, I would be too nervous to eat, but whoever wins, you are SO SO SO LUCKY! And please take me with you

Lakerfanalways September 8, 2009 10:18 PM

@Dan C
Yeah I read that..Obama is a Communist, this is what he wants, he wants us to officially become Venezuela, that is what he has been striving for for years and here is his chance. Of course he wants a Public Option, he wants a single payer option, that has been his goal since day 1

Nancy September 8, 2009 10:18 PM

Okay, another visual.

Remember in the movie, "A League of Their Own", when Tom Hanks's character comes into the lockerroom to meet the team for the first time? And he has a hangover. Without a word, he goes right to the urinal, and starts, well, wee-weeing. And he goes for so long, that the girls start timing him.
Think President Obama reliving that scene over and over, because of Governor Palin's writings.

1) Sarah is a major player. No one, except the extremely stupid, or the blindly partisan, can doubt her intellectual capacity now. An excellent piece.

Nothing against the Rep. from LA., but Sarah's piece is the REAL Republican response.

Sapwolf September 8, 2009 10:47 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if a riot broke out somewhere if the Dems force the government plan via reconciliation.

Keep pressuring all those right of Obama Dem senators and reps. so they can't even get the 51 votes in the senate they still need with Recon.

TSM Admin September 8, 2009 10:47 PM

I had another thought/question. As I understand it, there are currently three bills in the House and one in the Senate. They have got to conflict in some way and now maybe Obama will write another one?

What if they all pass or even just two of them? How do they handle that? (I know that if Senate and House pass different version of SAME bill, they do a Conference Committee or similar to work out, but this would be two or more different bills I think.)

Steven September 8, 2009 10:49 PM

Good editorial, but beware of the criticism of her grammar as there were grammatical mistakes. But as always with Sarah, there is something new. She has brought up another poignant issue of wages declining due to this legislation. Very interesting and a point I have not heard anyone make about this legislation. Something worth exploring by the conservative intelligensia. All and all I love her idea to give seniors vouchers to buy their own care, so they are the ones making the health care choices. Healthy seniors in early retirement can bank those in HSAs and in later retirement have funds for more comprehensive coverage. Great health reform ideas and Sarah is the only GOP politician I have ever seen who has a chance to steal the health care issue from Democrats, because she has great ideas and can articulate them. Amazing woman! Let's see what Obama has tommorrow to try to match.

Tim September 8, 2009 10:50 PM

Other than starting a few sentences with "And", which I find to be an excellent rhetorical device, I find virtually nothing to criticize. In fact, I find it to be awesome prose and it would be an incredible speech.

The goal of effective writing is communicating your ideas in a clear and understandable manner.

Over at HA a poster cmptnerd asked this question:

WHY CAN'T ANY ELECTED REPUBLICANS MAKE ANY OF THE STATEMENTS THAT SARAH IS MAKING?

My answer:

Why don't more golfers play golf like Tiger Woods? It boils down to three things:

1)Talent (the ability to pull something remarkable off when you have to)

2)Savvy (having common sense to grasp the situation or the lay of the land and to act accordingly)

3)Timing (understanding the concept of the psychological moment and zero hour)

Sarah is a superstar. And when your side has one you better not let him/her get away.
