Politico: Grassroots Republicans Like Palin

Politico takes the time to report on the obvious: the grassroots likes Palin:

As part of an effort to gauge Palin’s popularity with the rank and file beyond the Beltway, where the GOP establishment is lukewarm toward the charismatic former governor, POLITICO surveyed nearly 50 prominent Republican Party officials and politicians, representing every region of the country and ranging from statewide-elected officeholders to state legislators to state and county party chairs.

Outside the Beltway, you say? I didn't know you Beltway types were allowed to leave. Is this going to be a Gorillas in the Mist kind of thing?

Another Palm Beach County Republican, state committeeman Pete Feaman, argued that Palin has been misunderstood and that, at least among Republican voters, her support is durable.

“Republicans love Sarah Palin whether she’s a presidential candidate, a governor or an ordinary citizen,” he said. “It’s interesting that inside-the-Beltway people have no clue how much she is really loved.”

More here.

I just emailed the article link to 750 I have on an email list - including every Republican official in Washington State

I can't believe some of those doubting Republican chair people. I mean, didn't Obama not finish his Senate term in order to run for president?

Panchita September 29, 2009 11:22 AM

Was watching fox all morning with not one peep about Sarah's book. Just clicked over to msnbc and voila, nora odonnel and jim v. from politico discussing the book.

They don't think Sarah is running in 2012. Shhhhhhhh.

Great job Mel.

Gorillas In the Mist. Gotta love it. ;)

PEC September 29, 2009 11:23 AM

Mel - I was waiting on trhis post. What gets me is getting the Grass Roots is what wins elections. This is where Reagan was in the late 70s. Her lack of tie with the establishment is why her book is titled what it is. It is why McCains staff struggled with her. She is so anti-establishment and doesn't fit their neat little cupcake. The more thoughtful speeches like the one in Hong Kong and the further from the resignation she gets the better. As for as Romney and crew, look if Sarah runs she will have to debate them. If she holds her own and/or wins the debate the question will then come around to "wait a minute" he is no better on the issues than her. If she wins the debate it is lights out. The others will be writing their concession speeches for Super Tuesday.

Neo September 29, 2009 11:29 AM

[.]
"Her recent resignation was perplexing. It’s raised doubts about her viability as a potential presidential candidate. Still, she remains extremely popular with the GOP grass roots, and most Republican Party leaders would jump at the chance to have her headline one of their events."

[.]
"Some refused to talk about her at all. Others, mostly her critics, would do so only off the record. But taken as a whole, the body of interviews revealed that despite Palin’s high negative ratings in recent national polls, Republicans at the grass-roots level and their leaders still hold a very favorable impression of the former Alaska governor."
[.]

The very same "Republican Party leaders" (paragraph 1) who would 'jump at the chance to have her headline one of their events' refuse to talk about her or deny her.

headline? Does that mean she would upstage the candidate?

Thank you, Captain Obvious Politico!

PEC September 29, 2009 11:38 AM

Has anybody studied elections? Grassroots wins elections. It hurts me to say this but that is how Obama got in. The establishment was for Clinton. Grassroots make the phone calls, Grassroots knocks on doors, Grassroots drags 5 of their friends to the polls, grassroots multiplies.

LOL @ Mel's "gorillas in the mist"

Politico Poll

I just observe that the poll totally excluded Texas.

How can any national Republican poll be even near credible if it excludes Texas?

It can't

On top of that.

Didn't Obama quit during his first term as a U.S. Senator to run for POTUS?

So it seems to me that that is the simple response to anyone who calls Gov Palin a quitter.

PEC September 29, 2009 11:53 AM

The good thing about Sarah having a strong Grassroots Conservative support is 41 % of the US is Conservative. OK let us do a little math here. There are about 215 million Americans voting age. 41% of that # is roughly 88 million. Obama rallied the Grassroots Liberals last time and got 70 million votes. Only 20 % of Americans are Liberal. Obama is bleeding moderates daily. If he leaves his base his Grassroots will dry up so he has to stay liberal.
Now some will say yes there are more conservatives but it is about electoral college. Once again rally the Grassroot Conservatives and if you look at the #s all States are Conservative now with only DC being Liberal.
Add to that, Sarah's book and her Hong Kong speech showing the real Libertarian coming out in her (which is what about 70% of Americans are) and if she plays her cards right, Obama could make Jimmy Carter v Reagan look like a 15 round down to the wire election. The only tough sale will be the MSM fits in the 20 % liberal world. Sarah using Facebook and new technology to by-pass these bufoons is brilliant.

ladydawnelle September 29, 2009 11:55 AM

PEC

you are right! For years many many libs trashed Hillary for her moderate stance.

I think I got caught up in it for a spell when I was cheering for Gen. Clark to re-enter the race. sigh. When she out performed ALL of her opponents in EVERY debate it was clear who had the "smarts" for the job. Still MOST of the LIBS are like one dimensional one trick ponies that ONLY care about their ONE issue! Too many missing brain cells from all the years of abuse (or something)

Recovering Democrat September 29, 2009 11:57 AM

Palin is everything Obama pretends to be, Hank.

Transparent, reform minded, historic.

If you can't see that, you're just not paying attention.

Obama won the grassroots, no doubt. But he's not a reformer. He pretends to be one. He is a liar. His ties to Wall Street, particularly Goldman Sachs run deep. He is the earmark king, the Chicago pol, the lobbyist lover, the ACORN crown prince.

You think Sarah supporters are uneducated, but you're roundly mistaken. We are educated. We're just not OVER educated like the eggheads who created the financial crisis.

It truly takes a Harvard degree to f*** up this country.

lonestar September 29, 2009 12:00 PM

Hank - You are absolutely right! Obama is a winner! You shouldn't waste your precious time on a Palin site when you could be giving thanks for Obama and learning some of the new worship songs in his honor.
This Palin stuff is a distraction from what's important. Obama would want you to spend your time praising him, praying to him, and giving thanks that he is here to save the world.

Most don't get what connects people with Palin. They don't understand it, and most likely never will. That's good. The more confusion they have, the better. Going Rogue, will be a #1 best seller for quite some time, and will probably be followed by a more policy and philosphical book, which will also be #1.

This is a column by a Vanity Fair hack, who doesn't get it either. I do give him credit for his last line: Sarah Palin is just getting started.

My little South Carolina degree can tell you more jobs in the US will be created by drilling for oil here, less dependence on foreign oil etc. but what does the great Ivy Leaguer do? Give Brazil money to do what he will not allow to be done in the US.
Maybe Ivy Leagues need a class called Common Sense 101 before any student can graduate. And no this is not a disrespect to any Ivy Leaguers here, just they need to do better at turning out National leaders. They are batting .000 for the last 20 years.

The liberals like his caving in to Iran as Iran fires missiles under Obama's nose that range 80+ US bases and Israel. They like Obama siding with Chavez in Honduras though Honduras followed their Constitution in impeaching a Socialist friend of Obama. They like Qadaffi calling Obama his Son as the left likes thugs like Qadaffi. They like 800+ Billion dollars earned by hard working Americans and their children to be flushed down the toilets as unemployment goes up..up..up.... And the youth vote that went with hopey, hopey, changy, changy how is that 18% (1930s Depression era) unemployment change doing for them?

Book synopsis from Barnes and Noble:

Sarah Palin burst onto the political scene at the height of the 2008 presidential campaign and overnight became a national sensation. Adored by the right, bitterly reviled by the left, she is the most polarizing figure to emerge in American politics in decades. Yet for all the dirt digging and gossip that has surrounded her, very little is actually known about who she is, what she believes, and above all, about her plans for the future. In her new book, Sarah Palin tells the story of her Alaskan upbringing, her marriage and family life, her political career, her religious beliefs, and her meteoric rise to national prominence. With her customary blunt common sense, she sets the record straight about the many myths and lies that have been spun around her and lays out her vision for an America that is strong, independent, and free.

juju September 29, 2009 1:00 PM

Hank: Gee it grieves me to respond to this troll. But, I know you are too young to remember REAGAN who won by a landslide. All the terrible things you are saying (as well as many of the Republican Establishment) were said about Reagan. It is the fly over part of the country, the blue collar people, the non-establishment that elect our presidents when they come out to vote.

If the conservatives had come out to vote for McCain, even with OBAMA'S black vote McCain would have won. And, I wouldn't count on the hispanic voting for OBAMA again. OBAMA got only a few points more of the Hispanic vote then Bush did. Most of them are pro-life and conservative by nature with the right candidate.

PLEASE, IF YOU ARE GOING TO SHOW US POLLS...SHOW US THE RELATION OF HOW MANY LIBS, THEY POLLED VERSUS CONSERVATIVES. These polls mean little to us because they are always heavily weighed liberal and are not usually voters...not even registered voters...just people that rarely vote.

You really need attention don't you??? Kinda sad a person has to play in a sand pile where they are not liked are wanted just to get attention. Grow Up... Get a Life.

Article in the WSJ by John Fund re: Sarah's book. Here's an interesting snippet:

Ms. Vincent didn't reveal any details about the book, but did acknowledge it will describe Ms. Palin's frustration over her treatment by the staffers she inherited from the McCain campaign after her surprise pick as the GOP vice presidential nominee last year. Ms. Palin was booked on grueling interviews with hostile reporters while talk-show hosts such as Glenn Beck couldn't even get through to her aides. Mr. Beck tells me he was stunned when he picked up the phone one day just before the election to discover Sarah Palin was on the other end of the line. "She explained that she had been blocked from reaching her audience, so she was now 'going rogue' and booking her own interviews," Mr. Beck told me. "I was thrilled she had burst out of the cage they'd built for her and we were finally talking."

That incident was the only time Ms. Palin declared her independence from her keepers, and it's fitting that the title of her upcoming book will be "Going Rogue: An American Life."

I think we need an update on the book thread with that WSJ article and the Barnes and Noble synopsis with the cover picture.

http://tinyurl.com/yaxzvqa

By the way on the front of the Barnes and Noble site, it has the top 10 sellers of the day. She is at #6 just passed Beck who was at #7.

I think if I was the McCain team, I would be a little worried. If the little snippet in the WSJ is any indication, she is coming out swinging.

Cubachi September 29, 2009 1:56 PM

Did anybody check out this article by John Fund, http://is.gd/3MUka where Palin will discuss having to book her own interview with Glenn Beck because the McCain staffers prevented her from going on talk radio.
Beck was quoted in this article saying how shocked he was when he picked up the phone and Palin was on the other line, because she sneaked in a phone call with him.
And how the campaign basically caged her.
I imagine she also had to book her own interview with Levin, Hugh Hewitt, and Rush.

PEC September 29, 2009 1:58 PM

Nat Hound - My sentiments exactly. I think the other crew that is a little worried right now are the Good Ole Boy Republicans in Alaska.

A very, very small part of me feels bad for the McCain people. They almost certainly did not know what they had in Governor Palin. An inkling, perhaps, but not the full picture. Certainly not enough to invest their full faith in her abilities.

Bottom line: John McCain ran an incredibly passive campaign and on some level, the incredibly active Sarah Palin was a terrible fit for him. Team McCain basically had to put her under house arrest to keep her at the "correct" level of passivity. Katie Couric was but a warning shot to keep her in her place...

Don't know if it was already part of the scroll or if it was added.

It also mention that people are wonder if this is a lead up to running in 2012. Not the exact words.

But it mention the book being done early and moving up the release date and then the run for 2012.

I havent seen the book on amazon.com, I typed in the name and nothing came up. I presume its the same price there, 17.99 for a 432 page book is a GREAT deal. This book is gonna ROCK

Sapwolf - man, I was even playing matchmaker for you and defendAmerica. (I hope you finally saw that Sun. night or yesterday.)

(Mock indignation.)

techno September 29, 2009 2:30 PM

from my posting on the open thread:

10 insidious reasons for or objectives of the Politico article "GOP base still wild about Palin":

1)To deem Sarah as UNELECTABLE by implying she has no appeal outside the GOP base and to re-emphasize her supposedly high unfavorables; one GOP big shot calls her "damaged goods". In addition to elevate Romney and Huckabee.

2)To legitimize the misguided idea that most of the "criticism" of Sarah Palin is warranted

3)To highlight the "quitter" meme and to use it against her to diminish her influence by claiming the majority of the GOP was against her resigning

4)To imply that Sarah is like a travelling 3 ring circus or sideshow (the Jennifer Aniston of the party with her main appeal being fundraising) with plenty of frivolous sizzle but no meaty steak and that "serious" people will not consider Sarah for higher office

5)To divide the GOP by throwing the cat among the pigeons among the conservatives and the RINO's or the West against the East or the urban vs rural or secular vs evangelical

6)To imply Sarah is crazy or erratic-Politico calls it "a worrisome pattern of uneven behavior".

7)To play up the "inexperience" card which will remain a constant for Palin's GOP opponents and the Democrats to use against Palin

8)To diminish or marginalize her influence in the 2010 midterms ("I don't see Sarah Palin as the leader of the Republican Party going forward")with the party and voters; a corollary is to depress sales of her book

9)That Palin is not qualified to be POTUS in 2012 because she does not know enough (is an unsophisticated idiot) or does not have a clear agenda of what she believes or wants to accomplish (Palin should hit the books-the Katie Couric issues-exhibits muddled thinking on the issues, does not possess the political skills)

10)To depress and divide anti-Obama support so it does not coalesce behind Sarah (the nightmare scenario for Obama)

DryBones September 29, 2009 2:35 PM

#5 on Barnes and Noble now.

Sapwolf September 29, 2009 2:36 PM

Sorry Charter,

But 'Harvard is NOT the solution.'

I did note my assignment to the barbarian babe defendAmerica.

Thanks. I feel like I really belong now.

First thing we will work on is a new name for her:

"Sapwolf's Babe"

If she treats me good, I'll get her a Sarah book signed by the future POTUS.

CharterOakie September 29, 2009 2:38 PM

As for Mel's post - very revealing, but not surprising.

Some of those state and local GOP leaders reconfirm why I think the party is just a short distance this side of clueless.

But credit where credit is due:

The westerners get it, particularly in NV; Arapahoe Cty, CO; (what's up with Montana?)

Floridians on both coasts get it.

Wake Cty, NC was a bit slow to figure out the meaning of Sarah's passing the ball to Sean Parnell; but they're now up to speed.

Here in the Northeast, they totally get it in ME and NH.

The quote from the anonymous NH state senator was my favorite:

“If she showed up tomorrow in New Hampshire, they’d be lined up across the state.”

(C.O. would probably be there with them.)

PEC September 29, 2009 2:39 PM

techno - Agree. That is why moving up this book deal, giving her an opportunity if it presents itself to write a more vision/issue book before 2011 (when campaigning starts) is good.

The one thing Sarah may have going for her that has been little used if ever used before is Social Networking with Facebook and Tweeter. Her supporters will be able to get her message unfiltered by the MSM and blast it on their facebooks, twitters and word of mouth. By time MSM can send it through the Liberal filter people can already reach a conclusion.

JeanA September 29, 2009 2:40 PM

Nat Hound,

I think they realized what they had in Sarah but they just didn't know how to handle what was happening. It was all new.

I mean Gov. Palin turned into a superstar over night. Ten thousands or more at every stop. They were constantly upgrading locations and the news was all Palin. I don't think they had enough staff and were not prepared for the type of hate that was coming from the fringe media. After all Gov. Palin was a woman and the McCain campaign didn't expect the MSM to go to places it went.

Plus they didn't have the money or the time needed for a superstar. Every state and every city wanted Gov. Palin.

When was the last time the republicans had a superstar?

I watched a lot of the campaign stops for Gov. Palin and the people went crazy for her. They all wanted to touch her and be near her.

I had never seen anything like that in my life time for a politican.

Obama has his supporters but they were dead beats or fake.

CharterOakie September 29, 2009 2:40 PM

Sapwolf,

For the record, I never suggested that Harvard WAS the solution.

But happy to hear that you learned about defendAmerica.

By the way, in the meantime, I would suggest reading Same Kind of Different as Me. It is a book that Lynn Vincent also worked as a collaborator on. It is a great read about the unlikely crossing of paths between a wealthy Texas couple and a former sharecropper, Louisianan homeless man. It was a wonderful and touching book. It actually made me cry, which is incredibly hard to do!

Still, it's time for Yale to take some of the brunt.

OK, OK...Princeton then!

Recovering Democrat September 29, 2009 3:01 PM

Nat Hound, Techno ... Great insights.

And there is a subtle thread that ran through both your posts:

THE KATIE COURIC CONUNDRUM

Here are my thoughts on this:

1. I hope Sarah's book goes into detail about that "ill-fated" interview that every Sarah hater clings to as proof positive of Sarah's disqualification for higher office.

2. Has anyone here on C4P considered an extensive expose of that "damning" interview? There are so many angles to explore:

- the rumor that Katie conferred with Sam Nunn, a former Senator and Obama advisor, for advice not only on what foreign policy questions to ask but INTERVIEWING tips on how to expose Sarah.

- The McCain camp's role in setting up a supposedly six-hour interview with a known liberal TV personality, knowing that the interview would be edited severely to confirm a political agenda unfavorable to Sarah.

- Comparison of the edited vs. unedited transcripts. I know in one part of the unedited transcript Sarah talked about separation of powers that the executive branch doesn't have the ability to "override" the judiciary on its decisions. That was conveniently chopped off when Katie continued to push Sarah for Supreme Court decisions with which she disagreed. The separation of powers argument made Sarah sound too bright, I suppose. Katie just wanted to show that Sarah couldn't name decisions she disagreed with. She didn't want Sarah to put it in the context of the Constitutional authority.

Oh, and CharterOkie ... I only find fault with liberal Harvard grads. If you're a TRUE conservative Ivy Leaguer, you're tops in my book! Ha!

CharterOakie September 29, 2009 3:13 PM

COL OldDude,

I never quite understood the logic of that, what did insight did Nunn really have into Sarah, he may have come from a small town, but he was a longtime Washington insider. Richard Haas, whose busy now repudiating Afghanistan as a war of necessity, would have even
less perspective.

CruelaDev September 29, 2009 3:18 PM
