September 3, 2008: The Night Ordinary Barbarians Found a Voice

Last Saturday, August 29th, we recognized the one year anniversary of Governor Palin’s selection by John McCain to be his running mate in the 2008 Presidential campaign with a flurry of posts. See here, here, here, here, here, and here.

For many people, however, her introduction to the nation came five days later in a speech watched by over 40 million Americans. In my opinion and without qualification, her dazzling RNC speech was the best speech I have ever seen. It was a moving, passionate, and utterly fearless stemwinder by a truly gifted orator. With that masterpiece, she became the leader of millions of Americans who believe in a limited, citizen-led government and has never relinquished that role. Her recent almost single-handed battle against ObamaCare and "cap and tax" are proof of her enduring leadership of us ordinary barbarians.

Oh, just in case anyone’s memory needs refreshing on the magnificence of her speech...

Some would say I'm preaching to the choir here when I praise the speech she delivered on that historic evening of September 3, 2008. Fair enough. How did others perceive it, you ask? Let's take a look.

I have chronicled, in no particular order, some highlights from articles which were written in the days immediately following her speech.

Michael Barone, in US News and World Report, described her speech as:

The most electrifying and fearless speech I've ever heard from a vice presidential nominee.

In an article for The New York Post, Rich Lowry wrote:

Last night, the question about Sarah Palin wasn't if she's risen too fast, but where she's been for so long.

She may have given the best speech of either political convention. She delivered a brilliantly written text flawlessly. Politicians who've been on the national stage for decades could do no better, and usually do worse.

It is widely remarked that Joe Biden is an ideal No. 2 on a national ticket because he's a "happy warrior." Maybe. But Sarah Palin is a pretty, charismatic, winsome warrior, with a to-die-for smile, radiant upswept hair - and a steely toughness.

Sarah Barracuda, indeed.

[...]

Miss Congeniality isn't afraid to administer an old-fashioned beat-down. Annie Oakley brought a gun to a knife fight and made like the Obama-Biden ticket was a moose lazily meandering into her gun sights.

[...]

Palin quickly established her credibility as a genuine representative of small-town America in a way few politicians can - and then used it to wheel on Barack Obama as a gasbag and a fraud in a witheringly sarcastic assault.

Kathryn Jean Lopez, writing for National Review:

Without pandering, without sounding like a politician, Palin was able to say, essentially, I am one of you. I work hard. Love my family. Love God (“a servant’s heart”). We struggle, just like you. But we know what is right and what is wrong. And I am here today to make sure you can make the choices you need to do right by your family.

She didn’t have to spell it all out, she showed it to us Wednesday night. She showed us that even a small-town gal from Alaska can be successful and be a leader.

And she laid the groundwork for invigorating a movement. Immediately after her speech, National Review Online readers e-mailed me to tell me they had just watched the next Ronald Reagan, the long-awaited successor.

In an article written by Michael Calderone for The Politico, Laura Ingraham had this to say about Governor Palin's speech: "It’s one of the best political speeches I have heard — ever!" In the same Politico article, even the deranged Keith Olbermann couldn't bring himself to criticize her speech. In a visibly depressed NBC studio that was so eerily silent you could almost hear Chris Mathews’ leg tingling, Olbermann allowed that Governor Palin "clearly gives a great speech".

From the blog Broadsideofthebarn.com:

Governor Palin then blew the roof off the place. Everyone knew she had to perform and boy did she ever. Line after line she had every one in the arena jumping right out of their chairs. The media had spent the week slamming her, investigating her family, and exhibiting a level of unprofessionalism previously unmatched. When she ticked off a line about not caring about being accepted by the media elites, the crowd went crazy and started chanting, ‘NBC, NBC…’

I sat with a fellow blogger up in the nosebleed seats being both thrilled and stunned. I was just hoping she’d perform well, but had no expectation for her to deliver like that. It’s a speech I will remember to the day I die; it was that good.

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air:

Palin showed her mettle tonight. Alaskans tell us that she is “tough as nails” and doesn’t run from a fight. Tonight, she challenged Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and the media elite to a fight to the finish. And she has bad news for them: she has no plans to quit.

Republicans should feel cheered and elated by this event tonight. No matter what happens in this race, we have seen the future of the party, and it looks bright indeed.

Fergus Shanahan of the UK Sun:

WHY, why, why can't WE have a Sarah Palin?

[...]

She was an electrifying mix of passion, energy, optimism and plain speaking. The exact opposite of the slippery, two-faced, depressing bunch of third-raters who parade on our Westminster stage.

[...]

Showing steel beneath her magnolia jacket, she slaughtered Obama's lack of experience, his vanity, his emptiness beneath the windy waffle.

It was the most powerful demolition of the Democrat hero I have heard in two weeks on the US election trail.

Michael Reagan for Realclearpolitics.com:

In one blockbuster of a speech, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin resurrected my Dad's indomitable spirit and sent it soaring above the convention center, shooting shock waves through the cynical media's assigned spaces and electrifying the huge audience with the kind of inspiring rhetoric we haven't heard since my Dad left the scene.

[...]

In a few words she managed to rip the mask from the faces of her Democratic rivals and reveal them for what they are -- a pair of old-fashioned liberals making promises that cannot be kept without bankrupting the nation and reducing most Americans to the status of mendicants begging for their daily bread at the feet of an all-powerful government.

Erick Erickson, for Redstate.com:

Sarah Palin took to the podium tonight and gave the speech of a lifetime, perhaps the best nationally broadcast political introduction in the convention history...

Tim Reid, writing for the UK Timesonline:

She spoke for 36 pugnacious, stilleto-heeled, in your face, Barack Obama is a limp-wristed cover boy minutes. She blew the roof off. Sarah Palin has now shaken up a presidential race like no other nominee in modern times.

Jeanne Cummings and Beth Frerking, writing for The Politico:

Palin’s poised and flawless performance evoked roars of applause from delegates who earlier this week might have worried that the surprise pick and newcomer to the national stage may not be up to the job.

When the nearly 40-minute address came to a close, however, all doubts were doused and Democrats were on notice that Palin will not flinch from the fight.

And finally, David Von Drehle, in an article for Time, wrote that the early prediction of a rather dismal GOP convention couldn’t have been more wrong:

And there was only one real reason for that: Sarah Palin. Two simple words, but with a lot of meaning to unpack. First comes star power — Palin has it; McCain doesn't, and neither did any of the other men who ran for the party's nomination this year, which is why McCain managed to outlast them. As the also-rans trooped onstage to deliver their obligatory endorsements, Republicans were reminded that Mitt Romney looked like a leading man but lacked the magic; that Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee were never going to be more than character actors; and that Rudy Giuliani was a one-hit wonder as a leading man. While the runners-up looked on bravely, Palin blew past them to the head of the line, a cloud of snow and mystery in her wake.

[...]

On another level, Palin thrilled the Republicans by showing that Barack Obama has vulnerabilities, and she knows how to poke them. When McCain sprang his surprise choice on the public, the initial analysis held that by putting the rookie Governor of Alaska on the ticket he had erased the issue of experience. But like a lot of early thinking, that was wrong. Palin put the experience issue front and center, because suddenly America was seriously weighing the relative qualifications of the Democratic nominee versus the recent mayor of Wasilla. That's a comparison Obama loses simply by being involved in it.

In preparing this post, I listened to her speech again. As I did so, I was reminded of something Governor Rick Perry of Texas said a couple weeks ago. Emily Esfahani Smith interviewed Governor Perry for an article in The Wall Street Journal . In that interview, Mr. Perry was asked about the ideological divide in the GOP:

The political divide, the governor insists, is between "mushy, middle of the road" Republicans and clear, devoted fiscal and social conservatives, like himself and Sarah Palin.

On that last point, he states emphatically, "I love Sarah Palin, I love her positions, I think she was a good governor. . . . I want her to be engaged in this rebuilding of the Republican Party. . . . She is substantially more the face of this country than some other people who might want to be the face of the Republican Party. To me she's the face of America. I mean she's a hard worker, she didn't come from money, she didn't come from privilege, she just worked hard. . . . I have not seen another person who invigorated the Republican base [like she did] with the possible exception of Ronald Reagan in 1976—the speech he made at the Republican Convention. People were looking around and saying, 'we nominated the wrong dude.'"

We nominated the wrong person.

Who among us didn't have that thought pop into our heads at least once on that fateful night one year ago? With that mesmerizing speech, she took control of the convention and the party. She moved to the head of the table. McCain’s speech the following night was an anticlimactic afterthought, much like Gerald Ford’s speech was in 1976. Before Ford spoke, Ronald Reagan gave a short, impromptu speech:

In 1976, ordinary barbarians glimpsed their future when Ronald Reagan spoke at the request of the delegates. They knew in their hearts that they had nominated the wrong candidate. On the evening of September 3, 2008, ordinary barbarians were again given a glimpse of their future when Governor Palin delivered that magnificent speech. In the future, if she chooses to lead us, we will follow.

Doug,
Thank you for this post!

Nancy September 3, 2009 3:39 PM

This speech is what got the precisely choreographed coronation all wee-weed up.

Tiny Dancer September 3, 2009 3:46 PM

I'll never forget that night as long as I live. I remember standing and cheering at least 1/2 a dozen times. And afterwards I was so keyed up I couldn't sleep. My phone was ringing off the hook with family and friends calling to say "Where has the GOP been hiding this woman?" Sarah Palin became a bonified political star that night and despite the ups and downs of the campaign and despite the outcome of the election, she is here to stay. Regardless of whether or not she decides to run for President, she has forever changed my life and given me hope that the average citizen will take back this country from the elite class that has done so much damage for so long. Sarah Palin is my HERO!

Brianus Berkleianus September 3, 2009 3:49 PM

Bravo, Doug, and many thanks, my friend, for the post and for the fascinating compilation of comments that were made in the wake of the speech. Since it will be relevant here too, I am going to repost a few remarks I left earlier today on the open thread.

God bless, and enjoy the celebration (again!!)

My Dear Friends in Sarah,

Well, this is the day. It is one year since Sarah delivered her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. I have already expressed my thoughts about this unforgettable evening in the 29 August piece that Doug Brady was kind enough to post. I have set down just a few more thoughts below.

I am going to celebrate by watching the speech yet again, while enjoying the same libation I did on Sarah Palin Day, a fine merlot!

Enjoy the day, my fellow barbarians, enjoy the speech, enjoy the celebratory drink of your choice!

MAN PREPARES; GOD PREPARES

As various observers have noted on this blog, the radicals have been slowly, relentlessly putting certain dire plans in place, at least since the middle 60s, for the ruin of our nation. Behold, God had other ideas, as I believe. He too, in my opinion, was making plans during the same track and span and measure of time, plans and counsels quietly formed and founded in the heart of a brave young girl who was born in 1964.

On parallel tracks they have run all through the twisting, dusty paths of these long, these strange, these terrible years: the godless left, with the raging fury of their deadly machinations, with the expenditure of millions in treasure and the spawning of millions of lies; the good Lord, with the gentle, omnipotent caresses of His silent work in the deep, hidden places of the soul of Sarah from Alaska, with the invisible glory of millions of graces offered, millions of graces accepted.

Then, in 2008, in the warm, never-to-be-forgotten days of a dying summer, in a certain fullness of days and of times, both dispositions, that of the wisdom of this world and that of the Wisdom of the All-Highest, were revealed at length to the world.

Behold Obama!--the dreamed-of champion of the left, the fruit and front man of four decades of plotting and of maneuvering, and of the merciless use of the mailed fist, now fully unveiled and exposed through the pitiless attacks of his camp on the new Republican nominee for Vice President

Behold Sarah!--Our brave, fearless lady, the fruit and beauteous culmination of the greatest and mightiest of the Lord's works, greater than the creation of the stars and the constellations in all their vaulted splendor: the hidden formation of a good and brave and true heart.

This is what we all sensed, beginning in those dramatic Six Days that Shook the World, 29 August, 2008 to 3 September, 2008. This is what we all perceive a year later.

America must choose: Sarah or Obama.

I, for my part, say,

Give me Our Sarah, or give me death!!!

God bless you all,

Brianus

I also will never forget this night nor this speech.
She had me when she walked onto that stage in front of millions of people, showing such confidence and poise...I was hooked.

wisetrog September 3, 2009 3:56 PM

The thing about that speech was that it delivered almost verbatim from my fevered imagination and lot of others I know on the net. We knew Obama was a phony and were frustrated when others were not treating him so. She came and treated him as he was-- a phony. That was so wonderful with that speech.

wisetrog September 3, 2009 3:57 PM

I liked her before but with that speech I became a big fan.

Whitney The Pipsqueak September 3, 2009 3:58 PM

Thanks for this post! As I posted in the open thread, today represents "Sarah Palin Day" more so than August 29th, as her RNC speech was the first time I heard her speak. I was completely blown away. Perhaps August 29th was Sarah Palin Day, September 3rd may very well be any of the following days:

* I Told You So Day (I think that's what Yogi called it)

* Truthful Sarcasm Day ( Gov. Sarah's charismatic sarcasm is quite possibly one of my favorite traits of hers)

* Re-birth of Conservatism Day

* The Speech Heard Round the World Day

*Canine Cosmetic Awareness Day

Etc, Etc Day

I too found Sarah's speach exceptional.....now we nned to get her out here to do this over and over again....it's enjoyable to see the anointed one all wee-weed up..

johnfromcanada September 3, 2009 4:03 PM

I found Michael's Reagan's comments re Sarah's speech particulary insightful and prophetic.

The Obama camp must have stayed up all that night, thinking of new ways to destroy Sarah, and desperately calling in favors from the MSM.

Brian72 September 3, 2009 4:05 PM

That speech was simply awesome.

I won't forget the clip I saw of Andrea Mitchell, NBC News from the Convention floor right after that speech ended.

She seemed crestfallen, as if she had been waiting to report on the VP nominee's flailing ineffective embarrassing performance, and knew there was no way it could be spun as bad.

The fired up Republican delegates all around her were laughing at her and NBC News in general, having a great time.

In the middle of her live report, the balloons came down, and she was buried in red white and blue, swatting them away frustrated, while the delegates laughed at her even harder.

That was such a delicious moment, it was something I will remember forever. Luckily, so will youtube!

Sarah had me in her corner when McCain announced her, but that night she won my heart for all time.

I can't wait for the sequel!

Bill in Baltimore September 3, 2009 4:07 PM

she had me on Aug 29, 2008, but I became a barbarian-in-wating on Sept 3.

on 2nd review of the Aug 29 announcement, she had me with Willow not being able to contain herself as they all walked on stage.

Though not from a political family, ALL Palins are fine representatives of the greatest nation on earth !

I.LOVE.THIS.WOMAN.

I've listened to this speech several times over the last year. Her words are as true now, as they were then. Sarah is a true leader, lover of America, with a servant's heart.

Obama is now a lame duck. If Sarah wants the job, it's hers. She has my support, my money, my time, and my admiration.

The elites MUST understand. They need her more than she needs them. There's nobody else on the scene that captures the American Spirit like Sarah.

Thank you, Doug....for posting this.

Wildman Bill September 3, 2009 4:24 PM

I wish I could listen to the 3 hours of Rush Limbaugh the day after that speech. If I'm not mistaken, he said "I wanted that speech to go on forever" and I felt the same way.

latinchic September 3, 2009 4:24 PM

Like Ann Coulter, I was just hoping she'd be passable. And then she rocked the house, and the entire time my sister and I just kept saying "Wow", "Wow", "Wow".

Brian72 September 3, 2009 4:25 PM

Who knows, maybe next year we will be arguing about changing Sarah Palin Day to Sept 12, if things go the way I want them to.

The opportunity is lining up so perfectly, she has to swing at it!

It is a sure fire home run!

Yogi41 September 3, 2009 4:25 PM

I'm looking forward to her Presidential nomination acceptance speech in 2012. :)

bestbud September 3, 2009 4:27 PM

I'll never forget Sarah's VP speech... line after line after line undressing Obamas perfectly creased pants.
"When the Greek columns are taken back to the hollywood lot"!.. Perfecto!

Looking back.... Sarah opened a cavernous hole into Obamas... "I've got a gift"... Im special... I sound good... Im cool!

It's taken a year, 2-months was not long enough, but that hole has exposed exactly his inexperienced judgement as a community organizer with inept leadership capabilities... a fraud!

Yogi41 September 3, 2009 4:28 PM

I remember being nervous for her that night. Remember, she was attacked the minute she was announced, and that weekend, she had to endure the Trig rumors, her daughter's pregnancy and the Bridge to Nowhere "controversy". I recall McCain hid her all weekend until the night of the speech, and I was nervous that the pressure was going to affect her delivery.

Thankfully, she hit it out of the auditorium and she proved to deliver BIG every single time McCain needed her to do so.

Wildman Bill September 3, 2009 4:28 PM

I have watched this speech so many times that when I see a clip of it, even w/o sound, I know exactly what part of the speech it is. I.E., when Sarah is pointing backwards, I know she is talking about taking "the Styrofoam columns back to some studio lot".

Tiny Dancer September 3, 2009 4:29 PM

Wildman Bill:

I remember Glenn Beck the next day calling her speech conservative porn. He would play excerpts from it then play this weird 70's porn music. Very funny.

Nancy September 3, 2009 4:30 PM

As I was reading Proverbs 3 to my kids at breakfast this morning, I couldn't help but think of Governor Palin, especially remembering her speech one year ago today.

v. 3: Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
v. 4: Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
v. 5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
v. 6: in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Love and faithfulness are a hallmark of who Governor Pain is. Because she has bound them around her neck, and written them in the tablet of her heart, you see it in her eyes, her smile, and her actions.

Her heart is spoken for.

That is why she was fearless that night. Politics does not have her heart, and therefore holds no sway over her. The soft whispers of God to her heart, are what guide her, not the shouts of "Sarah! Sarah!". She is public SERVANT personified. Politicians, not so much.

Sarah Palin in all her ways acknowledges Him, and will have her paths made straight by Him.

Bill in Baltimore September 3, 2009 4:31 PM

TinyDancer,

conservative porn

I think.

My best friend and I watched Sarah's speech while on the phone with each other. We knew we were watching a great leader & when it was over we were both crying with joy.

May God Bless Sarah & her family and keep them close in His arms.

Doug,

Fantastic post.

I can't add much to the superlatives already expressed by others about Sarah's "tape measure" speech (she hit it completely out of the stadium, not just over the wall).

But I love the way you nailed NRO, Lowry, Olbermann and others by posting their comments about the speech.

Great!

Oh, and you found a way to work Chrissy Matthews into it, too!

Brilliant post, Doug. Brilliant.

Nancy @4:30,

Great section of Proverbs. Wonderful post.

CharterOakie September 3, 2009 5:17 PM

Bean Counter September 3, 2009 5:18 PM

Awww geez, it's gonna be another keg and Alaska salmon weekend....

But this is a remembrance that requires an appropriately reverential token of love and respect, and maybe another cake as well.

LT September 3, 2009 5:19 PM

When the day of the speech came I was so relieved. I knew she would hit a home run, but my concern had been whether she would survive the days before it. O'Reilly had said after the first day of attacks that McCain might have no choice but to drop her to spare the sideshow and his candidacy. I think the left knew that was their only chance and they did all they could to destroy her but thank God McCain stuck with her.

The speech transfixed me. I knew I'd love it, but it sent me someplace I'd never been before. It registered.

Afterwords, after the shellshocked commentators conceded her success, a reaction surfaced that made me think "uh oh" as far as strategy goes but now looking back I realize how cutting it was, and how deeply it engaged the fight. There was outcry from black community leaders about her "jab" at community organizers. I knew Obama was one, but had no idea then what one really was. Now, knowing community organizing is the means of enabling all Obama's political agenda, the core of his playbook all this time - I see how deeply threatening this exposure was to him and his fellow organizers. He had been undressed to his core, and with a sarcastic insult at that. Wow, what a shot over his bow. To this day I wonder if she knew what she had done and I shudder to think about it.

Bill in Baltimore September 3, 2009 5:24 PM

just now read the article (but have been commenting already).

Tears in my eyes just reading the comments from both sides, all were stunned
- the right exhilirated and energized
- the left practically speechless

I can't wait to watch the speech again.

How can she do any better than that ?
- I can't wait.

AmeriCuda September 3, 2009 6:07 PM

One thing everyone at C4P can agree on is that this speech was (to date) the definitive Sarah Palin moment. The one that wowed both the country and the media, alike.
WHY was it so effective? Because the speech, it’s delivery and her appearance were all impeccable. Why was it impeccable? That's where some of our opinions diverge.

What some refuse to acknowledge is that the reason everything came together so perfectly that night is because, aside from her own rare abilities, she was working with a myriad of professionals. Speechwriters, stylists etc.
This is why I find it odd that the mere mention of her needing experienced professionals around her, or, heaven forbid, criticism of Meg Stapleton for having to juggle all the balls, is met with derision. For me, the idea of Sarah surrounding herself with competent political movers-and-shakers does nothing to threaten her outsider status. And since I want her to be president, I also know it's imperative to her success.
That is also why her signing with Washington Speakers Bureau was my SECOND favorite Sarah Palin moment. This, I believe, is the beginning of a new chapter. One that will see a minimizing of unforced errors and a return to the glorious confidence and competence on display that night.

CharterOakie September 3, 2009 6:25 PM

Nancy,

Are you sure? If so, that will sap my last remaining bit of strength necessary to fight it off.

Uh, oh...

No, Chrissy, don't start...don't start!

Alas, to no avail (Chrissy singing):

"I've lost that TING-lin' FEEL-in'...whoa, that TING-lin' FEEL-in'.

I've lost that TING-lin' FEEL-in'..now it's GONE..GOne..gone..(whoa-oh-oh)."

Over to you, Nancy.

Adrienne Ross September 3, 2009 6:28 PM

Doug,

What a speech! I love watching the beginning also, before she even begins her speech, as she is clearly absolutely overwhelmed by the display of gratitude and euphoria from the crowd.

I also blogged about September 3, 2008. I hope you will all read it at http://tinyurl.com/ljdksm.

We are all so blessed to have Sarah Palin as a leader.

section9 September 3, 2009 6:42 PM

Americuda:

I second your sentiments. For Palin, practice makes perfect.

There's a story that went round in the early nineties that David Broder wrote of a young man who he met in the mid-eighties in a television studio who kept practiciing TV delivery. Broder spoke with the young politico and then went about his day. He didn't remember the conversation until years later. The young pol's name was Bill Clinton.

Practice makes perfect. Sarah gets that, I think.

Chrissy Matthews,

You would make things so much nicer for all of us here if you would JUST APOLOGIZE for your outrageous comments about "dog whistle of racism" and "cul-de-sacs of white America" (or whatever nonsense it was that you said).

You and Kathleen what's-her-name.

Just apologize and retract the comments. Pretty simple.

Otherwise, the record player stays.

I want to share a quick story regarding the events of a year ago and, I'm afraid that many of you will be able to relate. On August 29th, I watched the Governor's introduction from a cubicle at work, a job I no longer have. I was intrigued and thought that this might e a woman worth fighting for, but, needed more information. Before I could turn around and get back to work, my father called and asked, "So, now do you feel like a failure?" Palin is only a couple of years older than I am, and I have, honestly, underachieved and remain unmarried. Here was a woman that had achieved and was happy and content with her life and yet, I couldn't muster the normal female hatred or jealousy. Over the next couple of days, I made an effort to find information about Palin's governorship and, in the process came across the ugly smears and rumors that permeated those 5 days. By the time she took the stage that Wednesday night, I was nervous about the unknown and hopeful that the substantive things I had found out from news stories and video would ring true in that hall. Of course, the Governor exceeded every expectation and, I believe, I became a warrior for her that minute. Shortly after the speech was over, my father called me again and asked what I thought. I simply said, Wow! I then asked my dad what he thought. He was impressed and said, for the first time in his life, he had no problem voting for a woman. My dad is a bit old-fashioned but he's not really sexist or racist. He likes people to prove their worth.

A year later after arguments with family and friends, including my Dad, my belief that Sarah Palin can help this country like no one else is still steadfast. My father and other people have allowed the media to sway them and everytime I say something like, "Listen to Sarah, not what the media says about her," I'm accused of being an idiot and a groupie.

In reading the comments on this blog entry, my first thought was, what happened to some of these people? They pretend to stand for conservative ideals, and yet, they seem to be listening to what others say about Sarah and not to what she says. I count on you guys for my sanity check and to know that there are other people like me who watched a speech on Sept 3, 2008, a little nervously, but found something to fight for in the process. This will not change for me anytime soon. So, KEEP UP THE FIGHT BARBARIANS!!

You are not alone. As it is I've been accepted here as the youngest poster. (I'm not even 18!)
My friends call me stupid. My parents don't care. But I will support Sarah Palin.
The media attack her. But I will support Sarah Palin.
The liberals and the left hate her for who she is and who she stands for. But I will support Sarah Palin.
She is a mom, an encourger, a fighter.
I will support Sarah Palin.

Brooks5 September 3, 2009 7:11 PM

I agree with you AmeriCuda. Saying that there are some good people out there who could help her maximize her extraordinary talent doesn't diminish that talent at all.

I'm convinced she's the only one able to pry this country out of the hands of the enemy, but that doesn't mean she can't use some assistance to help sway the less enlightened.

(BTW, I know we all say we'd support her no matter what she decides to do with her life, but man, will I be bummed if she doesn't run.)

wilsonpickett September 3, 2009 7:17 PM

What a night it was, especially after the atrocious media attacks of the previous four or five days! But I was already hooked on August 29.

A funny anecdote: Our older son, a 20-something living in Florida, had been a George W. Bush fan in 2000 and '04, but had kind of soured on Bush in the last two years. Even though he wasn't an Obama fan (like many of his colleagues were), he definitely couldn't have cared less for McCain as the presidential nominee.

My wife reminded him in phone calls earlier in the week and again on September 3 to be sure to watch Governor Palin's speech at 10p.m. EDT. He said very unenthusiastically, "Yeah, Yeah. I doubt if I will."

You who have kids know what I mean when your offspring act like they aren't paying attention or won't do what Mom and Dad recommend, but really they are listening.

That night, about 15 seconds after Governor Palin concluded her speech and her family was gathering on stage, our phone rang. My wife said, "Maybe that's Adam."

Sure enough, it was. All he said was, "Wow! I really don't have anything else to say but Wow."

Needless to say, he had been impressed, and we're glad he watched the speech after all.

Nice job, Doug.

John Hawkins @ Right Wing News has a good post of RWN'S 10 Favorite Sarah Palin Quotes.

Maybe we should e-mail them to school principles across the nation to balance out the Obama worksheet order's to teachers to discuss Obama's mort memorable quotes on Sept. 8th.

tim c September 3, 2009 8:04 PM

I was all wee weed up in anticipation I was so nervous I was shaking, I wanted so desparately for her to succeed. Giving a speech at a National Convention, live broadcast across the country, one slip up can throw you into an anxiety attack that could even make you stop breathing. I feared for her.Well it was nice of me but obviously entirely unnecessary,as we all know that was the remake of the shot heard round the world.I still get goose bumps gloating over her success, and I know where "lovethatgirl" got her name.

Nancy September 3, 2009 8:06 PM

CharterOakie,
Here goes:
Matthews singing.

I always roll my eyes everytime I hear her name
I got no crease anymore in my (ahem) pants, because she puts Obama to shame
She typed "death panels", I can't believe it!
And ObamaCare!
ObamaCare, it's over!
I am so wrong about her!
She makes Obama look so bad!
Oh she is so in Obama's noggin,
That he says he doesn't want to pull the plug on granny, dothheprotesttoomuch? oooooohooooooh.

There are many people who have been swayed by the media. Most of those people like your father judge a person by their worth but sometimes the media gets to them and they just go with the flow.

But we need those people too we can’t let them get away, it is up to us to educate them and correct them. Most people will listen to the truth when it’s told. With the amount of trash been thrown at Sarah it’s not going to be easy but it can be done. I have done it many times.

Sit down with toy farther and have an open conversation with him, ask him what he doesn’t like about Sarah, and have answers ready for everything. He will point to various things he has heard in the media. For example he might say she’s a quitter, answer him that she didn’t quit, he r position had been compromised and with all the ethics complaints her mere presents was costing the state millions of Dollars. She resigned for the best interest of the state. Turn it into a positive.

Let him throw everything at you and be ready with answers for everything. If you get stuck it’s OK to tell him you’ll get back to him, come to C4P we will have answers for any question.

The main thing is to make him aware that the MSM is trying to take her down simply for the reason that she has the power to take Obama out.

Again it’s not going to be easy but slowly you’ll turn them around. Any help you need that’s why we are here for.

terri September 3, 2009 8:08 PM

Okay...I know this is wayyy OT.

But it's a MUST SEE...(especially if your a Monty Python fan like me...lol)

But it is so uncanny how it fits in to what's going on right now.

I loved watching that speech again. She had them eating out of the palm of her hand.

Is that all there is of the 1976 Reagan speech? I thought it was longer.

militantfeather September 3, 2009 8:14 PM

Great post AmeriCuda. You are absolutely right that we should be more open, at least amongst ourselves here at C4P.

As you imply, Sarah already has acquired very considerable political skills and a huge following, but even so, amazingly has even more raw untapped talent and appeal as you point out in your example of the RNC speech.

Even though what we have seen is impressive, we probably "ain't seen nothing yet". She will blow them away.

Nancy - I can always count on you!

terri - I'm a Monty Python fan; will have a look.

I still need to watch Sarah's RNC speech tonight (though I've seen it several times before).

Glass of American red wine is at hand (in honor of those All-American red high heels).

In response to Nancy Neumann:

If we all continue to stand resolute, unfazed by the attacks against Sarah Palin, as she herself continues to stand, the skeptics and doubters will eventually come around. The haters will eventually skulk away.

God Himself will supply whatever else is needed.

Now, for that magnificent lady and her magnificent speech!

God bless. Keep the faith, barbarians.

@Section 9,
Right on brother.
I love the idea that she is an athlete, because that means she knows the importance of 'fundamentals' 'technique' and yes, practice ): practice /: practice (:

@Brooks5,
There's a part of me that would almost be relieved if she chose not to put her family through the rigors of another campaign, BUT -I'm also not sure she would ever be content if didn't gave it a shot. You can see it in her eyes. She thrives on 'big-time' action.

@Militant feather,
Absolutely! As she has shown again and again, she was born with a fifth ace that she can pull at will. I have a feeling the perception of SP is going to be wildly different one year from today. No one puts 'Cuda in the corner!

Lipstick September 3, 2009 9:38 PM

Americuda @ 6:07:

I agree. Sarah will not lose her outsiderness if she employees a few professional, loyal, good at what they do people. No Karl Rove types. This is like the football draft. All you hear about is the top 5 picks, but how many great players are drafted in the bottom of the first round and beyound?

Sarah can't do it all with just TOdd and Meg. She will need help.

I also stick by my statement:

Sarah Palin is my national leader.

male mania September 3, 2009 9:41 PM

Yes,,,a very very good post. But I am curious, as to where most of these writers and reporters that made these comments shortly after her RNC speech, are NOW???? cement shoes in Lake Michigan, or in the WH??? Just, I have not seen most of there names, in other recent articles..

narciso September 3, 2009 9:52 PM

Well Lowry, has gone soft, maybe because his endorsement was a little too adoring by some.
Ingraham, provides some support but we know how she hedges, Barone
was caught saying we have to go more upscale for the voters. Only Von Drehle, has really given her
a fair shake 10 months in.

CharterOakie September 3, 2009 10:01 PM

OK, just finished watching THE SPEECH again.

Wow! and Wow again!

Powerful. Provocative. Primal.

Did she not show what it is to be the quintessential strong, supportive, loyal, loving woman? Governor, wife, mother, daughter, running mate.

She herself pumped fire and strength into McCain and his campaign by the sheer force of her charisma and determination.

I noticed again how much Cindy McCain admired and appreciated Sarah.

My goodness, what a woman.

Sarah America!

God bless and keep Sarah Palin, her family, friends, advisers and supporters.

Bill in Baltimore September 3, 2009 10:03 PM

CharterOakie,

well, how did you like it ?

:-)

I tried to watch it on the way home (on my BB) and I only got to see the introduction where the place was going nuts ! and she hadn't even said anything !

unbelievable !

Go Sarah !

male mania September 3, 2009 10:16 PM

Thanks narciso. I will look more closely, for words from these writers.

R. A. Mansour September 3, 2009 10:20 PM

William Henley, what the hell kind of a comment is that about Barack and Michelle Obama? Sorry, maybe I'm being hyper sensitive and maybe I read too much into your statement, but that sounds creepy and racist to me. It's been deleted and you are on notice. Anymore crap like that and you're banned. We don't need anyone bringing shame on Palin supporters by making comments that could even appear racist or racially insensitive. Sorry, we ain't giving any ammo to the left here. Think before you click post please.

Finally just watch it again!!

Wow, I am in humble awe. I remember just as everyone else my stomach in my throat. I was so nervous for her. I desperately wanted her to succeed and even hit it out of the park.

I significantly underestimated her. She not only hit it out of the park, to this day her speech is moving, prophetic and dead on.

Matthew Scully wrote that if I am correct. She needs to keep him on retainer. He gets her. He gets her timing and humor. He speaks her language. He is an excellent match for her.

I have a feeling that she will bring the house down in Hong Kong just like she did that night.
