Afghanistan Illuminates Obama's Complete Lack of Leadership; Updated
The difference in leadership quality between President Obama and Governor Palin over Afghanistan couldn't be more clear. Obama believes he knows better than his own hand-picked expert, General McChrystal. McChrystal has requested an additional 40,000 troops without which the U.S. will fail in Afghanistan. General McChrystal's superior, General David Petraeus, endorses McChrystal's strategy in Afghanistan.
Obama's amateurish handling of Afghanistan should come as no surprise. This is what happens when we elect a man with zero executive experience to the highest office in the land. He has never run a Kool-Aid stand, much less a business or any level of government. Executives, including presidents, are paid to make decisions. Not rashly, but quickly and decisively when the circumstances call for it. With U.S. troops dying at an increasing rate and roughly 68,000 troops in harm's way, it's fair to conclude that this is one of those circumstances.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, speaking for the Obama Administration, recently said Obama's decision on the troop request will come in a few weeks. Obama has been president for nine months and he still needs a few weeks to decide what he wants to do Afghanistan? This is not what is meant by presidential leadership. Rick Moran, in a post in today's American Thinker, captured why we should not be surprised by Obama's inability to lead and make a decision:
This is how a community organizer "leads:"
[...]
Wishy washy leaders always split the difference. It's a way to avoid making a decision while offending no one and satisfying nobody. And it is apparent that the president has already rejected the best advice of his commanding general on the ground in Afghanistan and, if there is a troop increase, it will be for show only, and not materially affect the security situation.
This is exactly the kind of "decision making" one would expect from a community organizer. I'm surprised they didn't build a campfire in the Oval Office and Obama had everyone hold hands and sing "Kumbaya."
[...]
If ever a situation cried out for crisp, decisive leadership by a commander in chief, this is it. We are not getting that. We are not getting anything close. We are between a rock and a hard place in Afghanistan, the commanding general has asked for help, the country is unsure, the Congress is split, his own advisors are wavering - and the president of the United States wants to split the difference to make everyone happy?
Not only do good leaders have the ability to make decisions, but they also know when to delegate decision making authority to their subordinates. Obama, due to his limitless (and unwarranted) sense of self-importance, believes himself to be the smartest person in the room and thus must micromanage everything. Jimmy Carter also had this narcissistic quality and we all know how that worked out.
Governor Palin, on the other hand, has years of executive experience in and out of government, where making decisions on a daily basis is a requirement. She has shown a knack for surrounding herself with quality staff and having the confidence in their abilities to allow them to make decisions. If she were president, there is no doubt that she would follow the expert advice of General McChrystal. In yesterday's Facebook Note, she clearly indicated what her approach would be to General McChrystal's request:
Now General McChrystal is asking for additional troops to implement the strategy announced by President Obama in March. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers in harm's way in Afghanistan right now. We owe it to all those brave Americans serving in uniform to give them the tools they need to complete their mission.
She also called on President Obama to "man up" and do the job he was elected to do:
Our allies and our adversaries are watching to see if we have the staying power to protect our interests in Afghanistan. I recently joined a group of Americans in urging President Obama to devote the resources necessary in Afghanistan and pledged to support him if he made the right decision. Now is not the time for cold feet, second thoughts, or indecision -- it is the time to act as commander-in-chief and approve the troops so clearly needed in Afghanistan.
Once again, Governor Palin is proving that she has leadership qualities far beyond those of our elected president.
Update by Mel: (h/t jimr3) According to the New York Times, the Obamas requested that this painting by Ed Ruscha be displayed in the White House:

Can't a man just eat his waffle?
Update II by Doug: Roger Kimball, at PajamasMedia.com, has another take on Obama's waffling indecision with respect to Afghanistan. An excerpt follows:
Over at The Weekly Standard blog, Bill Kristol has a short but deadly post on Obama’s dithering non-policy about the war in Afghanistan. Bill reports that at a recent meeting with Congressional leaders, Obama gravely pointed out that every thousand troops sent to Afghanistan would cost about a billion dollars a year. A billion dollars a year! Call Senator Dirksen. Would they, Obama is said to have queried the Congressmen, would they really be prepared to support $40 or $50 billion in additional spending?
Rich, what? Or rather, poor. I mean, here’s the $12 trillion President fretting — that is, pretending to fret — over $40 or $50 billion. That’s school lunch money for the Democrats.
Of course, the issue isn’t money. It’s morality. That’s to say, it’s about what really matters to Obama. He’s willing to demand $800 billion now, today, to shore up his support among the auto unions and other Democratic interest groups. But the war of terror? He can’t even bring himself to pronounce the phrase. Indeed, one of the first things he did upon assuming office was to rebaptize the war on terror “overseas contingency operations.” (No, I am not making that up.)
Read the rest here. This is unconscionable. This is a president who has already wasted or plans to waste untold trillions of dollars on bailouts, nationalized health care, cap and tax, and a stimulus plan that didn’t stimulate anything. Now, when government spending is necessary to prevent a catastrophe in Afghanistan, he’s counting pennies? The only explanation is that he doesn’t care a bit about our troops or their mission. His only concern is that supporting them may harm his chances for his administration to take over even more of the U.S. economy.

She has made more decisions since she got up this morning than he will make in a week's time.
Excellent comparative, Doug.
Governor Palin is a born leader. Obama is.....nevermind.
If these two were on the basketball court, she would be in his face, not letting him pass her. He turns to the left, she is there, calling him out. "What are you going to do?". And because of his lack of (ahem) backbone, he looks away. She is dominating him.
Campaigner-in-chief vs. Commandress-in-chief
"The only victory he believes in is in his own campaign."
Sarah Palin, convention speech
"The only victory he (Obama) believes in is his own campaign."

This is what Pres. Obama had to say about Afghanistan in July.

I have a feeling his feelings haven't changed.
The job of a leader is to look at the big picture. Ask himself/herself exactly what she/he wants done, define the mission and let the Admirals and Generals develop the strategy. That is what they are getting paid for. The leader is just that, provide the leadership which obama does not have. Leadership involves taking risks (political or otherwise), stablishing realistic goals and let the commanders worry about the details. What obama is doing is voting "present" as always and then blame someone else when things goes south.
He is absolutely clueless
Oh, I forgot "victory is not our goal"/
To the best of my knowledge...has he even acknowledge the 10 dead soldiers from this past weekend?
I noticed he gave shout out to the Phillipines and all those caught up in the floods. But has he said one word about our fallen heros? He may have.. I have not heard it. We lost 8 of those troops...worst same day loss for Ft. Carson since Vietnam.
Has he even acknowledge that we even have soldiers?
None that I know of. Has he visited any of our wounded troops?
Exactly right!... VOTING PRESENT is the life blood of this guy... If he went to the blood bank they would type his blood... VP negative-- universal donor for cowards only.
Wow! Just wow! I'm sure he has a magic eight ball that tells him the same thing.
posted for replies
She's doing exactly as Reagan told us (conservatives) to do -- speak in strong bold colors, not wimpy pastels.
One slight mistake and it is terminology. The President comes up with the vision/strategy while the Generals develop the Strategy/Operations.
Normally one might consider calling this type decision making... "Paralysis by Analysis". But that wouldn't be at all fair to demean Analytical thinkers that way!
This is pure... PATRIOTIC-PARALYSIS!
Agree, Thanks
The Governor stated the obvious with her usual boldness to drive home a point that Obama is indecisive.
-------------------------
Obama reminds me of a Cheerleader with a giant megaphone at a high school basketball game. Overtime and the game is tied. He prances out to mid-court during a timeout and turns to the home team for a rousing chant, then he turns to the opposing team for another rousing chant.
He boldly steps back in his purple t shirt and spandex and yells through the megaphone, "Okay, okay, I hear you, but wouldn't it be better if we just end the game now so that everyone can go home happy?"
Both sides of the stands errupt and storm the court. Obama runs for dear life and sees Pelosi in the far left corner of the gymnasium crying that she saw a "disturbing sign" from one team wanting to beat the other. Reid and Emannuel fighting over who gets to carry the Gatorade, and Biden yelling, "the stimulating chants from both teams are working........no really!"
Obama hurries to the exit and the Secret Service is waiting by the Gas Guzzling Bullet proof SUV in the parking lot. He jumps in and Michelle is waiting and glaring. "Don't tell me that you lost this one too? Did you remember the cartwheel? I sure don't need this after the fiasco with the Olympics last week!"
Obama responds, "I fell down and cut my knee. I think I need stitches." Michelle rolls her eyes seeing that its a tiny scrape, but he insists that he needs it checked out anyway.
The Obamas arrive at Walter Reed. Governor Palin enters the room in one of those leftover White Doctor's coats given away the other day at the White House.......
Well, that's why we don't tend to elect many legislators as President. Senators and representatives rarely look at the big picture. Congress is all about small-picture politics. Which is why we have a $12 trillion federal deficit and a tax code that qualifies as a weapon of mass destruction.
This is not "paralysis by analysis". He is out of his league, overwhelmed, and doesn't know what to do. He has no management or leadership skills at all. So he avoids making a decision by looking busy doing everything else but dealing with this issue.
It's obvious he can't do this job, and he needs to be removed, now.
Whitney,
I had the exact same thought!:)
Obama's Magic Eight Ball
Obama: How many books will Governor Palin sell?
Magic Eight Ball: Are you wearing your Depends?
There was a commenter on another blog, I forgot which one, and he got a lot of flak for it. He said:
"Let's close all the service academies and make members of congress and white house staffers generals and admirals then sent them all to Afganistan...."
You left out the part where she smacks her rubber gloves and askes him to bend over!
Obama's Magic Eight Ball
Obama: Which talk show should I appear on next?
Magic Eight Ball: Ha! Ha! That's funny!
Obama: Answer me! Which talk show should I appear on next?
Magic Eight Ball: Oh, sorry! You were serious.
I think I might have hit upon a solution... Obie and friends are so used to changing words... redefining titles like, "An oversees contingency operation", replaced the old harsh mean "War On Terror".
Lets get General McChrystal to revise his request....
Mr. President!, I URGENTLY NEED 40,000 WHITE COATS!
LOL! That is great!
Patriotically-Challenged?
What I want to know, has OBAMA ever gone to Walter Reed and seen the wounded soldiers??
I don't recall seeing anything about that. JUST IN....LATER NEXT WEEK HE WILL FLIP A COIN
HEADS HE FOLLOWS THE GENERAL'S ADVICE...TAILS HE WAITS A LITTLER LONGER TO MAKE A DECISION.
The picture truly says it all.
President Obama: I already made a decision on this! We decided to go for the Portugese Water Dog instead of the Afghan.
That is a HUGE problem. All our politicians worry about is getting reelected so they are very near sighted.
Have you also noticed that the MSM are not running daily "body bag" counts like they used to when GWB was president? Zip, Nada.
Sarah made more decision in her role as a mother of 5 then Obama made EVER. The experience of a mother of this many children is her best weapon. Think about it.
She knows when to let them fight out their differences, but she also knows when to step in.
She knows how to make instant decisions that affect all of them.
She knows how to divide her time and attention.
She knows how to get the most out of every dollar, to make sure everyone has what they need.
She also knows how to help them see the value of time and money by expecting them to do their part.
She knows how to set rules and how to enforce them.
She knows how to discipline.
THESE are the skills Obama is lacking. Yes, she did these things as Governor, but she has done them much longer as a mother!
Yeah, isn't that the premature committer's, dilemna here at c4p. Maybe she will run .. yes on facebook ... no interview .. I'll ... tweet ... tomorrow ...
Obama has a lot of experience - voting present and campaigning. And that's exactly what he's doing now. Sarah told this to the country prior to the election. And the elitist. the dimocrats, and the lame stream media continue to call her stupid.
Seems to me that not only is Sarah a true leader, a common sense conservative, and a thinker, she is above all a WISE WOMAN. Wisdom depends on a person learning from all their life experiences including their mistakes.
Of one thing I am certain. Obama the great apologizer, the great narcissist, the great campaigner will never be a Wise Man.
Dr. Palin's prescription.... sorry Obambi, the leg has to come off - isn't that what you claimed that physicians do in one of your endless lame speeches. Rush??? You got your rusty old chainsaw ready????
Expensive mistakes, very interesting
This is interesting to review, but the biggest mistake is you-know-who, be sure to scroll to the end of the document.
Bill, you have the pictures and the captions out of sync
Too Funny.
I know, I saw that when I posted it, will have to correct, but you get the point. Can't fix it now (trying to work here)
How did obama ever have kids?
Michele: "Come on baby-cheeks...Let's get it on!"
Barauk: "Maybe yes, Michelle...OR maybe no...Wait a minute..Let me be clear..Well,on second thought:...mmm!...mmm!...mmm!"
Michelle: "ZZZZZZZZZ"
It does punctuate the crazyness, also the Chernobyl pick could double for Natanz or even Qum
Maybe yes...No... on Second Thought... Wait a minute...
Now I'm confused..
How did obama EVER have kids.
Imaginary Bedroom Scene:
Michelle: "Come on Barauk, baby cheeks...Let's get it on!"
Barauk: "Wait a minute Michelle!...Maybe yes...Maybe no...Let me think about this...Let me be clear...Well.on second thought...mmm! mmm! mmm!"
Michelle: "Snore!!! ZZZZZZZZ!"
As an iconclast I am going to take a contrary position that Obama knows exactly what he is doing and is actually decisive.
Who thinks that the orchestrated campaign to take Sarah Palin out over the last 14 months was not authorized by Obama?
Who thinks that the agenda that Obama has brought forth has not had his seal of approval on it?
Has Obama sized up the GOP members of Congress fairly well and concluded that they will not come after him with both barrels of the gun because of "white guilt"?
And who really thinks that Obama is waffling over Afghanistan because he is indecisive? Could he be catering to the Far Left kook fringe of his party and be planning which is the best way of extricating the United States from the battlefield and is not ready yet to make an announcement?
There is a major difference between sinister planning and stumbling indecision.
When I was still married in Michigan my wife and I had two dogs before my son came. One of the dogs was an old male black lab who had a very submissive hang-dog look. The other dog was a younger female mix of German Shepherd and lab/retriever. She was more aggressive. She was dominant too. Sometimes, I'd catch her humping the old male. I was not sure if it was because she was horny or if it was her way to show dominance.
Sarah Palin has been humping the weak beta-male Obama for a awhile now showing him who is boss.
I think his decisions are well executed by other people. I think he's just a pawn in the system. He seems to be waffling on whether or not he wants to be a pawn.
that's how it was done in the civil war. my great grandfather served under a former Gov of Massachusetts and his brother under the first major of San Francisco, Gen Geary.
Sheya- Channeling Obama are you? LOL.
I'm with you DefendAm.
I think POTUS, is just a Puppet on strings. I think that he get's his
working orders every day from on people like Soros .
sarah rocks 2012
No doubt it is a machine. A good thing Sarah is doing is once again laying low and ambushing where she sees fit. It is a lot harder for a Big Machine to attack somebody using guerilla warfare. I don't believe Obama is more than a puppet on a string. Yes he has smart people behind the curtain but he himself is a puppet. Watch how terrible he is when not scripted.
Techno:
Very interesting analysis and I really enjoy reading all your posts.
1) I agree with you that he orchestrated taking the Governor out 14 months ago.
2) I also agree with you that his agenda has his seal of approval.
This is where I begin to differ. Yes, he has sized up all members of the GOP Congress. I can think of only one other person besides the Governor who would come at Obama with both barrels - Michelle Bachmann. She doesn't have any fear either. And she never would be concerned about racist charges, etc. If the majority of the GOP Congressmen would start acting more like Governor Palin and Congresswoman Bachmann, Obama really would be having migraines right about now.
As for Afghanistan, I actually do believe he is waffling and therefore indecisive. I agree with you that he is concerned about the Far Left fringe appeasement, but the problem he is now facing is two-fold. His own General called him out last week. Secondly, he always has that private citizen sitting in Alaska typing away and giving him gray hair. He cannot stand being made a fool of. Afterall he is the President. He won!
The man thinks he is invinsible. Reality set in last week when he failed to garner the Olympics. Throw on top of that the leak to the press about the General requesting more troops. Could it be that his trust and judgment is finally being called into question by others? He is the President. How dare thee? He won remember?!
At this point I honestly believe he is scrambling for the right response on Afghanistan which delays any decision being made. Axelrod and Gibbs can say all they want about "not ever thinking about Governor Palin", but mark my words, they think about her 24/7. McCain, Boener, McConnell comments have no effect on the WH. Governor Palin always leaves a mark and she is of deep concern.
Whatever decision he makes now is critical (both politically and long term) and after getting swiped by the General, and by the Governor on a regular basis, they are definitely sifting through their response so as to limit the damage and not look weak. She of course is his only real threat to winning re-election anyway.
To me, this should be a quick and easy decision. Your General who is on the line has requested more troops. Give him what he needs. That is what a Commander-in-Chief does. If he does that, I bet the Governor would follow up the next day with a friendly Facebook post congratulating him on making the right decision.
If he is just a puppet on a string, he and Michelle should be deeply ashamed.
Funny!!
They both should take the magic Blue Pill and fly off to New York again!
I have a soon who is just finishing 17 years in the US Air Force as an EMT Figher Fighter. He has been to 'the desert' 6 times. He has spent time in Guam and 3 years in Belgium.
Rumors are his next trip will be to Afghanistan - the first. Now is the first time in his military career that ole-dad is more than just a little vervous. With that idiotic kid of a C-I-C he has, I'm very concerned.

Depending on which historical account you read of the war in Germany during WWII that was main the reason that Hitler and the 3rd Reich lost the war in Europe; i.e. Hitler on more than one critical occasion refused to listen to his generals and made the decisions, all of which turned out to good for the good guys and bad for the 3rd Reich.
Fortunately for the world Hitler refused to listen to his generals. In this case, hopefully for the world Obama will come around and decide to listen to his generals.
I know this sounds a bit nefarious, but if Obama does nothing in Afghanistan, he also reduces the number of conservative voters that will vote against him in 2012. He is always in campaign mode, perhaps this is a strategy. Keep a large number of the electorate overseas and dying. What else can explain his inaction, other than complete incompetency.
It must make writing a book easier if you know your beliefs, your worldview, and not have to make up lies.
This needs to be stopped! Get involved. Local ,State, and Federal level. Find out who is running in 2010. And help with what you can. 5,10,20$'s it all helps.

Gang,
The good news is that her dollar/energy facebook post is referenced in the lead article in the Financial Times. The bad news is Olstein's final sentence.
To make decisions, I think they blindfold Joe Biden, put a tail of a donkey in his hand, spin him around, face him toward that painting, and give him a push.

O/T....but Redstate.com is reporting that the GOP is now waffling....showing support for the government's takeover of healthcare. It will be voted on very soon....and by the sound of things, we are just going to let it happen. What a pathetic group of representatives we have. Did they not hear anything during the townhalls and tea parties?
Would love to see another Sarah-slam of healthcare right about now. Not that it would do any good....but at least to restate her objections for the record. She will have all of this crap to deal with in a few years.
I hope that I am not repeating what someone else said. This is the person who took six months to chose a dig for his daughter. Using that yardstick, it should take him ubtil his seventh term to decide what to do in this war.
You editors are going a great job.

"We have people at the highest echelons of our government who may be rotting this nation.

"When SARAH PALIN'S LIFE is threatened for speaking the truth, this is the work of thugs."

LOL! That is a gross mental picture you just put in my head, Bestbud!
It's true! And it's so perfect for The Campaigner on a Perpetual Personal Journey of Self Discovery!
i know time does not like palin but the piece is not really that bad. it references collaborators on other well received books and so by implication palin is in that group. the article does suggest the collaborator do more of the work than the "star" but it does not suggest palin did anything less than hillary or lance armstrong. the article also suggests the book wont be heavy on policy but who cares - when the book comes out it will be clear what it is about.
dont get me wrong I wish vincent would do some kind of press release sort of shooting back at these type of articles but all in all i think it is just another article that keeps palin in the news and her book hot.
The CBO $800 billion includes imagined savings from fighting fraud and other ridiculous stuff. The real tag out of the gate is $1.3 TRILLION. It of course will go WAY over budget and lead to even HUGER deficits. The plan might destroy the country before the 5th year ends after its implementation.
It will an economic disaster and will lead to a bloodbath against the Dems if not in 2010, certainly by 2014/16 when the full effects of it are felt assuming the GOP does not run to repeal it before it does its damage.
We are very close to ending our republic.
KentonAk... WOW!
Thanks for referencing that American Thinker Article!
I've been thinking a lot lately about how the Left is really feeling about their hero... Robin of Berkeley calls it, "this eerie silence about Obama".... "adulation for Obama: Missing in Action, a telling sign"
I agree totally.... I could never have written it like Robin, but WOW!, does she ever cover the scope of the situation we are in up to our collective eye balls!
I can't imagine the anguish of families of fallen heros.
But you know!... like Sarah, that love of God and Country runs deep within them, as It should with us all, and they rise above it all.

Going Rogue Update: #1 at Amazon, #1 at Borders, #1 (non-fiction) Books a Million, and slipped to #7 at B&N.
The good news about B&N is that Going Rogue is still #1 in political books, and is still way ahead of Ted Kennedy's book which is now #35. Arguing with Idiots by Glenn Beck is #17. So, despite its drop from first place, it looks like it is still enjoying healthy sales. Personally, I don't know anyone who buys books online from B&N since there are so many of them in my area that people prefer to go to the store and buy. I intend to be at B&N on Nov 17th, to see how many copies of Going Rogue they display, where they display them, etc. I'll also check WalMart.
I usually order books online from Amazon. They only charge the book price plus S&h. In addition BN charges sales tax because they have a store in my area.
