Another Self-Important Elitist Attacks Governor Palin; Updated
Yesterday Governor Palin posted a Facebook note in which she, correctly, noted with alarm the fact that the dollar is in danger of being replaced as the world's international reserve currency:
The British newspaper The Independent reported today that Gulf oil producers were negotiating with Russia, China, Japan and France to replace the dollar in pricing oil with a basket of currencies.[1] According to the Wall Street Journal, Arab oil officials have denied the story, but even the possibility of such a talk weakens the dollar and renews fears about its continued viability as an international reserve currency.[2] In fact, today a United Nations official called for a new global reserve currency to replace the dollar and end our “privilege” to run up huge deficits.[3] We can see the effect of this in the price of gold, which hit a record high today in response to fears about the weakened dollar.[4]
Apparently Governor Palin's timely entry into the debate offended the sensibilities of Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute. In an article in the Financial Times, Ornstein was asked to comment:
“The dollar has always been a testosterone issue among America’s political classes,” says Norm Ornstein, a veteran analyst at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. “This time there may be a legitimate debate to be had over the dollar’s reserve status, but Sarah Palin is not qualified to participate in it.”
I am at a loss as to why Mr. Ornstein believes Governor Palin is "not qualified" to express her well-founded fear that Obama's disastrous economic policies are causing the dollar to collapse before our very eyes. The article in which Mr. Ornstein makes this utterly baseless pronouncement offers few if any insights into Ornstein's reasoning, if there is any. After giving Mr. Ornstein's head scratcher some thought, I can come up with only two possible explanations for his proclamation.
First, Mr. Ornstein, of the elite American Enterprise Institute, may simply be making another elitist argument against Governor Palin. Under this theory, Ornstein in effect declares that one must have a PhD in international finance from an Ivy League institution of higher learning, approved by Mr. Ornstein of course, in order to notice that the dollar is in grave danger. Lacking such academic credentials, one simply can't earn Mr. Ornstein's seal of approval to engage in discussion on this topic. It is pointless for Governor Palin to enter this debate unless the self-anointed arbiter of public debate, Mr. Ornstein presumably, has deemed one worthy of entering it.
Of course it is irrelevant that elitists (like Mr. Ornstein) are the very individuals who have been developing and implementing the public policies which have resulted in the current predicament the dollar finds itself in. But facts such as this are immaterial to Mr. Ornstein. Evidently he believes that since elitist's policies have devalued the dollar, only they are qualified to ponder policies to restore its value. Forget about common sense. That would be too easy. This issue can only be properly contemplated in the context of an overly elaborate debate engaged in by the very geniuses who created the problem. What could possibly go wrong? This kind of deep thinking by deeply thoughtful elites has worked so well up to now.
Elitism is not the only possible explanation for Ornstein's attack on Governor Palin. His use of the word "testosterone" to frame the debate about the dollar's slide is rather odd. Given the way the article divides the quote, it's difficult to say for sure what Mr. Ornstein's intentions were, but it certainly seems possible that he may believe the governor to be unqualified to participate in this debate because she is a woman. Imagine the gall of that woman to believe that she should have a voice at the table!
Does Mr. Ornstein mean to say that only those with "testosterone" meet his criteria to discuss manly topics like the dollar and it's affect on energy prices? After all, these issues can't possibly be understood by a lowly woman whose real place in life is to be home cooking and knitting socks. Never mind the fact that she is a former mayor and Governor of a huge energy producing state and has demonstrated that she has more testosterone than the entire Obama Administration combined.
At any rate, whether Ornstein is elitist, sexist, or temporarily insane, he is clearly wrong. He didn't even deign to offer any hint as to why he believes Governor Palin is unqualified. He, like many elites, seems to believe that no explanation is in order. His simple pronouncement on the subject is all that's needed (in his mind). Speaking of explanations, I wonder if he might provide us with one for his hand in shaping McCain-Feingold.
I wonder if he believes Obama is qualified to discuss the dollar's reserve status. If so, why? What criteria would he use in judging Obama's suitability to enter the discussion (he finds Obama qualified to discuss earmark reform, so I assume the criteria might be similar)? It certainly can't be the result of anything Obama has ever accomplished in his life. But then there is that testosterone thing...
Update: (H/T Joshua Livestro) When it comes to Governor Palin, Norman Ornstein has a history of sexist comments. From Palinsexismwatch.blogspot.com:
Fortier and other political scientists spoke Thursday at the think tank, where Ornstein observed that Palin gets his vote, at least in one respect. "Sarah Palin's choice did electrify the country," he said. "I believe she's the prettiest vice presidential choice since John Edwards."

Does Norman Ornstein work for Mittens?
Inquiring minds....
Look, all these sumbitches are going to be surprised by the breadth and depth of her support. Especially people like Ornstein.
Well, Norman, she is going to be your president someday, so you might as well start getting used to hearing what she has to say about finance.
Oh.
Oh no.
WTF?? and I don't say that phrase often but his use of the word "testosterone" pretty much invalidates his opinion and ruins his credibility.
Somehow I think he is friends with Mittens. Mittens needs to be very careful. He is becoming more and more transparent with regards to Sarah and people will turn on him. If nothing else they will turn to Pawlenty who is no better.
Another person few have ever heard of, trying to get some national attention by trashing Palin. If you ask me, all these people Dip Schmidt, Murphy, Ornstein, etc., are just trying to ride her coattails, and it's really pathetic.
Any one who understands the oil industry necessarily knows the dollar is the currency. If the dollar weakens and oil increases in price it effects everyone and you don't need an Ivy pre-school certificate to be able to comment on that. I'm gonna keep pounding this point, has Ornstein ever put together a private sector project valued at 26 billion, if not what does he know about the value of a dollar?
sadly pathetic this ornstein chap. typical lib. the point of his whole worthless article (and the only reason anyone is reading it) is, a private citizen by the name of Sarah Palin has written a post on her facebook page.
He's intellectually dishonest and sexist enough to then say she should leave the room when the real discussion starts.
what a tool.
Call Ornstein at the AEI and voice your displeasure. Tell him that Sarah is the only one speaking out on the droopy USD and ask him why she cannot participate in the debate given this is a free country? Remind him that it was cowardly elitists like himself that got us in this mess in the first place.
He's a Pr*ck.
Norm, Norm, Norm - go away. Be like Norm from Cheers and find a nice bar stool to park it for a long, long while. You are obviously very effective at affecting the price of the US dollar (not).
I mean wha wha wha. Anybody here think huckabees a genius? of course not. Anybody been asking him to leave the room? Not that I've heard. So why Sarah? Who was that other turd who wanted Sarah to leave the room? Geez.
He is really talking monetary policy, which in normal times is debated as to how strong the dollar should be in regards to all foreign trade and for selling debt. These are not normal times and printing a few trillion extra dollars will bring about some serious inflation, any one can talk about that.
I'm on a rant tonite folks. It just tees me off to no end when we give the libs permission to defecate over our female candidates. Not a peep from the supposed macho men on our side in their defense. Michelle Bachmann is ridiculed and hammered constantly (and that's only on Fox).
We should be co-opting the party of equality and show the libs for the true sexist that they are.
We as conservative men must oppose sexism and call out those that demean women. this ornstein fellow is one such cretin. shame on him. shame on those who don't defend Sarah.
The.Nerve.
He must answer to this.
p.s. I bet Greta V. would LOVE to hear this one.
techno: "Olympian detachment"= surgical separation of obama and his ego
What arrogance. What qualifications, exactly, does he deem are necessary to "participate" in "his" debate? Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, perhaps? How about former GOVERNOR of a state? Or maybe only those of the rarefied class of Community Organizers are worthy of such discourse. If the latter is the case, what chance do the unwashed masses such as ourselves have in understanding these complicated and confusing issues?
Great job Doug...Your rebuke of Mr. Ornstine and elitist mind set, are more or less my own santiments. What it sounds like is that Mr. Ornstine, didn't bother to read Sarah notes , and it seems that forgets that she was a Governer for 2 and a half years.
sarah rocks 2012
For decades I've thought the charge of "sexism" was BS. I must have been blind to it, because it became very clear during the 2008 campaign that sexism is alive and well. This is another example of it.
Just light up his phone # and the # of his assistant at AEI. Let him know he is wrong and that Sarah has it right.
Unless one of these "experts" can furnish me with a partial resume in which they have run a small business successfully or have some executive experience (like being a mayor or governor), then I am not going to listen to them when it comes to what should be done economically. I have a Master's degree in Counseling and run into medical doctor's (M.D.) that have little to no knowledge on how to deal with mental health issues. Just because this guy has a Ph.D., does not mean he knows more that how to pass a series of test and do research.
One of the biggest problems in Congress, IMO, is very little practical experience in life. I would a detailed list of all those in Congress broken down into what practical experience they have (doctors, small business owners, eduction, etc.). Lawyers don't count.

I'm surprised that you barbarian babes have not offered up the suggestion that estrogen trumps testosterone every day of the week. (My wife MADE ME type this...LOL)
Another Sissy Boy.... Upstaged by a Woman!
When I read statements of that nature...I think...
INSECURE!
Time to pull out the Steel Magnolias quote:
"An ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure".
I bet she earns more dollars than him , so i say she's qualified.
I always found Norm to be a wishy washy dweeb, and this column proves it. Who has more guts, who dared Obama to veto the stimulus and start over, who told China to "stick it"
in their own backyard, who confronted the President with the facts, rather calmly and made him hug his security blanket, TOTUS
I noticed that too. Hopefully it's for real and not a troll invasion.
Hey Or'Notstein...You talk...but... We Don't Listen...
do you know whom I feel bad for? those tea party people. Do they realize what a waste of time that was for them. I mean, it was ok for the males with ivy league degrees. what about the majority who did not know they were unqualified to discuss economic matters? I think that people who want to protest the economy must serve up their resumes from this time on.
How did you get a CelticDiva avatar?:)
Actually that looks like me when Whitney brings up the Cardinals.
President Obama when he gets a 'Cuda Facebook posting?
I got it! Begala!
President Obama by the 3rd debate with Palin?
On second thought somebody said Greta was talking about Sarah's Facebook posts, that's probably what's driving the numbers.
Pompous Pathetic Pukes, the whole lot of them!!! There, now I feel better...
I'm not quite sure of the entire context of the "testosterone" comment, but I know a bunch of barbarian babes who would beg to differ with his statement.
Carville by 2012?
hehehe...That's my avatar...for people who talk...Sh*t
against the 'Cuda...LOL!
Hehe! I'll stop, if that's what it does to you! :) Plus, they are sticking it up so far tonight. :(
Can anybody confirm that that was a C4P comment window on Greta's show?
I like it!:)

OT: Where is the clip of O'Reilly that Sheya was going to put on C4P? Greta appears ticked that Sarah isn't talking to her (or anyone else). She said she makes her statement on Facebook and they all report it but that Sarah doesn't have to answer or defend her position. They are dying to talk to her :)
Don't for get Jane.
lipstick.
You are exactly correct. Good job for someone who, I aaume, is without testosterone to help develop opinions!!!
And that does not include her time on the Alaskian Oil Commission. She has followed the dollar for the last 6 to 8 years.
Yes, of course, Jane as well! :)
Yep! I like it!

That's Arlen Specter.
Wasn't Gov. Palin on two other commissions as well. I know she was RGA Chair for National Resources or something like that and one other one.

O’Reilly with Bachmann discuss why the media and the left continue going after Gov. Sarah Palin and herself in particular and Conservative woman in general. (Foxnews 10/07/09)

Thanks for sharing, Sheya! Paraphrasing Michele Bachmann:"I guess they (the Far Left) don't like that conservative women are happy and don't need government"
Darn right!
Here today is an elitist statement from Cal Jillson a politics professor at Southern Methodist University:
"They (party insiders) know that running an 18-month or two-year campaign for president requires endless amoung of hard work, organization and a sytematic approach, and she (SP) has shown no CAPABILITY for doing any of that. And they're frightened the base will act on emotion rather than reason."
TRANSLATION:
To those 900,000 + members of Sarah's Facebook, 70000 members of Team Sarah, and the millions who support Sarah Palin take stock and realize that Sarah Palin has no chance at the GOP nomination in 2012. She is a "blithering idiot" who has no organizational skills, does not know anything about getting her ducks in a row and how to build a campaign infrastructure and is vapid and clueless. There is nothing upstairs. All she has is charisma. Stop being a child and grow up and become rational. You can't possibly be thinking about voting for a diva who said, "I can see Russia from my house." (she didn't) or would have allowed a white trash Levi Johnson to bed her daughter.
Mitt Romney will forgive you. Praise Mitt, the savior of the GOP and America.

Palin at it again....."type, type, type....smack"
The reason why you never hear about an elitist's daughter getting pregnant ot-of-wedlock is because they arrange quiet trips to the abortionist.
Cal Jilson can put a sock in it. Lets look at the last few Presidents and see if they meet his criteria of being able to run a 2 yr campaign. Obama? Had never run for President or even anything on the national level. He set record fundraising amounts and seemed to do ok with the whole campaign thing. Against someone who had actually been front and center in 2 Presidential campaigns and on the natl scene for 16 years. W? Had never run for President. or even in a primary Clinton? Had never run for President or even in a primary. So the last 20 yrs worth of Presidents had zero experience in anything when they all ran and won.
At least Sarah can say she was part of a natl campaign. She's traveled the country. Proven she can attarct crowds, talk to people, excite people, debate and by a number of observers accounts' tie or beat a guy who twice ran for President, was in the Senate for 36 years and was chairman of the Foreign Relations and Judiciary Committees. Proven that at least 60 million people and 22 states were just fine with her. She's already proven she can attract a bigger crowd and more attention riding down the street in a convertible than any GOP contender was able to do in more than a year of campaigning in 2007.
What had W proved as of 1997? Obama as of 2005? Clinton as of 1989? Calm down, Cal.
Meanwhile, I can think of one guy who already proved he can spend over a year and 45 million dollars of his own coin to camp out in IA, NH, and SC, oversaturate all 3 states airwaves with advertising, outspend his rival by anywhere from a 7-1 to 10-1 margin, have the support of all the same GOP insiders and beltway smart guys he could ask for, have everyone know that he was the only alternative to John McCain a man who dedicated his career and made his name by sucking up to the media and telling the conservative movement to go screw itself, all that and more...and he ended up losing in all 3 states. Including a state he knew he absolutely had to win, and a state he had set up shop in for a year and outspent his closest rival by greater than a 10-1 Margin only to lose by 9 pts. Lets go with him,
Well you have to admit if you're a professor at SMU, you'll never get any notice for supporting Sarah, but while dissing her, you keep your name in the news. One has to think she's running for it, why else stake a position on every significant issue under the sun, not just for a book tour, or even a speaking circuit. But in her own way, and on her own schedule. Meanwhile everyone else goes to the 'dog and pony shows' and delivers canned speeches we've heard a dozen times before.
Is your ID set as Guest on Purpose (which is OK if you want it that way) or do you have problems seting it up, if so let me know and i'll help you through it.
Despite Ziegler's advice Palin should wait to 2016 I can't think of one good reason why she can't.
thank you sheya, great tip for those of us with intermediate computer skills
True. People have asked about it and holding shift was just a simpler way of doing it in case people end up going further than the linked pages (eg. going to other pages from there). But you are right whateve makes easy for you.
so after her book tour i think it will be speech, speech, speech. CPAC will be awesome
Zieglers advice .Forget it.The time is now.2012
Greta is bitter the Gov. doesnt want to talk to her.
Bachmann -great stuff.
Denis Miller puzzles me-more and more.
I think the waiting till 2016 thing will depend of the political winds, If after 2010 Obama appears to be as strong as Clinton was in 96 or Reagan in 84, no reason to be run in what would be a futile effort.
That siad, notice how we've seen all these "pundits" and "strategists" opining on how she can't win independents, how the party is too far to the right, how bad Limbaugh and Beck are, etc...
First off, independents tend to vote more against the party in power than for them. THey're independent because they lack that ideological core. So they move around. When things are good, they'll stay with the party in power and when they're bad they'll vote for the other guys. It doesn't have much to do with the individual candidate, it's more a reflection of the larger political environment(economy, jobs, war, popularity of Bush, etc...). IOW, if the Dow had stayed around 11k last fall and the financial meltdown hadn't happened we wouldn't be hearing about Palin and independents because we'd be too busy looking at pictures of her in cabinet meetings.
Now, pretty much every poll shows that Obama is down among independents, that the GOP is closer to the Dems on the generic ballot question than they've been in a long time, and that the party is in a better position congressionally now than they were in 2006 or 2008. The dems went from +7 to -9 in a year among indeoendents in Gallup's poll.
If that's the case, it might suggest that said critique is mistaken. The most visible republicans/conservatives since Obama has taken office have mostly been the TV/radio guys like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Levin, the whole Tea Party movement, and in terms of elected officials or fmr elected officials I can't think of anyone who has been more visible than Sarah Palin. Certainly not Boehner or McConnell. Those two actually make Al Gore and John Kerry look fun. So if Rush, Beck, Palin, the Tea Partiers, Levin, etc... if they're all bad news for the party, why have things seemed to improve over the past 9 months when they've been front and center?
She got an opportunity to scout the country with the campaign last fall, then Miami, Evansville, Greater NY, the Balkans, and now HK, for the international set. I know they will bring back Tina, who does not come off well in the contrast and Levi and god knows who else, But who cares, they will founder upon that thin gruel they provide. Now for some pointed motivators:
http://jeffords.blogspot.com/2009/10/sarah-palin-motivational-posters.html#
Boehner and Mcconnell -not articulate enough but i have to say ,on right side of issues lately.
Tina Fey -her impersonation of Sarah was and is best gig of her dismal career. So of course she is coming out of retirement.
My fellow Barbarian's ..It's 2012 or nothing. This country will not be

Turns out that Ornstein was a frequent guest on Al Franken's show on Air America, and his big accomplishment in life was to write part of the McCain-Feingold bill. Wow, imagine that, a totally wasted life. Oh, I guess he did appear on Steven Colbert's show, too. What a joke. Why would anyone take this a$$hole seriously?
I reread that Standard piece that Continetti wrote after her resignation announcement, and he really does get her, more than any other of the early round of commentators, that aren't in the immediate circle of supporters.
How did no one see the signs with Levi? I remember reading an Esquire article about Todd that mentioned how Levi was always over the house and she was teaching him about cooking. He seemed ok, then. Now, it's like he some personal vendetta and is out to cause as much trouble as possible.
Where did Greta seem bitter? I've always found her to be one of her biggest fans and her husband was qouted saying positive things in a recent article so I'd be surprised if she was bitter. I'd expect her to be on her show at some point. The problem is you don;t want to overdo it and if all the shows on FOX want her she can't be on all of them at the same time. They'll probably spread it out.
The O'Reilly interview with Bachmann was interesting although after hearing his rationale for why liberals don't like her and Palin I'd just remind Sarah to make sure no loofahs are in the vicinity if she goes on The Factor.
I think there will be at least some signings. At the least, the publisher is paying for everything, so she may as well take advantage of a campaign like setting without having to spend anything. It really is amazing how much she's been able to do and to accomplish without having to raise or spend a single dime like pretty much every other person does. I mean, think about it. The weekend with Black Friday and the Saturday after will be the busiest shopping days of the year. And what will everyone who goes to a mall see? That beautiful cover of her smiling out at them. It's like putting up posters nationwide. Normally you'd have to raise tens of millions for that kind exposure.
Interestingly, it looks like Obama will be out of the country from Nov 11-20. I guess he just didn't want to be overshadowed when the deluge hits. All the better, she'll have all the attention to herself.
And to think I supported Mitt in the primaries last year. I'm ashamed of him.
That was Krauthammer. I like Charles, but he was totally wrong to say that about Sarah -- especially when the rest of his column essentially agreed with her.
What's up with these "conservative" men who agree with Sarah on substance but think she's the wrong messenger?
If she's got the right message, and the guts to keep voicing the message under constant fire ... she IS the right messenger!
Amen, Panchita! I think we should go Al Sharpton on this Ornstein guy. What's the phone number?
I majored in political science at conservative university. All my professors were Marxists.
Here's what Jilson, speaking for party insiders, might have meant:
Sarah Palin scares me to death. She's too ... normal. Our best hope is to try to confuse normal Americans by telling them that their beloved Sarah is disorganized when anyone with half a brain knows that it takes organizational skills to be a mother of five and governor of a oil-rich state. Maybe we can convince them that she is not a hard worker even though she runs marathons and hunts moose while passing complex legislation and vetoing pork. Alas, we will have to lie, and say that she can only appeal to emotion, not reason -- and hope no one notices that the current president got elected only on hope, and that Sarah Palin has actually been making a lot of sense lately. Oh well, at least Mitt can drop another $40 million into his campaign. That will buy a lot of pizza for his devoted followers.
Mitt is the wrong man for the times. We're not looking for an investment banker to save us. We want a warrior mom.
You askin about levi? just saw on the msnbc crawl that he will be baring it all for playgirl. Hmmm, wonder if it'll coincide with Sarah's book
Funnily enough, sexism wasn't the first thing I thought of in response to that word "testosterone." I thought that this Ornstein guy was dismissing the whole falling-dollar argument as something nobody would worry about unless he was a macho jerk who just wanted to push everybody else off the top of the mountain, and that he might have been thinking that maybe it's time for some other country to be top dog for a while. (You know how liberals think.)
That bit about Sarah Palin being unqualified to talk about this pissed me off. We're all passengers on the Titanic and we're being presumptuous by talking about the iceberg ahead? F--- you, Ornstein. It's "smartest guys in the room" like you who got us into this mess, and we're going to talk about it whether we have your approval or not. Snotty jerk.
I'm really getting sick of these self-important elitist turds!
Norm obviously feels threatened by strong women. Poor guy. Mamma must have coddled little rascal Normy a bit too long growing up. In hindsight she should have taken out his pacifier at 2 instead of 10.
As for his comment about her not being qualified to provide commentary on financial issues, good ol' Norm must share a brandy and cigar with Charles Krauthammer on weekends. I would blow this off as hot air by elitist buffoons.
To be honest, I actually believe when comments like this are made about the Governor, they can only benefit her in the long term. She may not have the confidence of fence sitting Independent women who swooned over Obama right now, but women in general will never put up with this elitist sexist crap either. I hope she is keeping a good war chest.
I agree with the sentiment; however, Ornstein is no lib. Jackass, yes, but a conservative jackass.
I suppose he is liberal for a Republican, but he's no Garofalo. Call him a RINO then.
I called Norm, he said he made a snide comment. I asked him twice to say so publicly, not sure if he will, but he seemed sorry enough.
By the way, this is my first time commenting on this great site. It is a fun, informative and exciting site. Thanks for all the work that is involved, and thanks to all the people who frequent this site, helps me remember that there is a light at the end of this tunnel!
Apparently Governor Palin's timely entry into the debate offended the sensibilities of Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute. In an article in the Financial Times, Ornstein was asked to comment:
----------------------------------
Since the establishment of Air America Radio, Ornstein has performed the bit with a wide variety of questions on The Al Franken Show.
====================
[1] Ornstein is married to Judith L. Harris, a prominent regulation litigation lawyer. He studies American politics and is a frequent contributor to The Washington Post and many magazines. He has written a weekly column in Roll Call since 1993. His greatest political influence may have come in writing substantial portions of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, also known as the "McCain-Feingold" campaign finance bill passed in 2002. [1]. He is currently co-director, along with Thomas Mann, of the AEI-Brookings Election Reform Project.
==============================
What I see is JUST ANOTHER LIBERAL EGGHEAD ACADEMIC.
This time there may be a legitimate debate to be had over the dollar’s reserve status, but Sarah Palin is not qualified to participate in it
Imagine - the nerve of her to think she has the right to participate without the approval of the "elites" Who would have known that only a select group are entitled to have an opinion.
Someone needs to get a clue - rather inane for a Mitt supporter to come onto a site CLEARLY identified as a Palin supporting site and tout the guy who couldn't even get noiminated last cycle.
Hopefully Playgirl is paying Levi enough that he can at least help with the diaper bill. What a loser!
