GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Embraces Palin!

As it turns out, there is a GOP gubernatorial nominee in 2009 who thinks Gov. Palin is an asset. Not in Virginia, not New Jersey - but let's not forget that the Northern Mariana Islands are also electing a Governor this year.

And guess who's picture is front and center on the website of GOP nominee Heinz Sablan Hofschneider? I'll give you a hint, it's not Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Tim Pawlenty, or Newt Gingrich. I might also add that two of the last three governors in the Northern Marianas were Republicans (and the current Governor is an ex-Republican who started his own third party), so Hofschneider is a serious candidate.

Update by Doug: This is the photo displayed on Hofschneider's website.

CNMI resident Heinz S. Hofschneider met former Governor of Alaska and 2008 Republican U.S. Vice-Presidential candidate, Sarah L. Palin during a stop-over at the Narita International Airport in September. (In this photo: Todd Palin, Sarah Palin, Isabella Hofschneider & Heinz Hofschneider).

What do Steve Schmidt and Barack Obama have in common?

Both are now ordering Depends by the Truckload!

Newsflash!! McCain just submitted his order.

Mary Beth (Über),  October 14, 2009 6:25 PM

Aw... that Isabella is adorable!  By that picture, it looks like she's drawn to Palin too...so we know she's got a good head on her shoulders.  ;)

Awesome! He shows more guts than most of the "men" in the GOP! I wish him the best!

conservativemama,  October 14, 2009 7:08 PM

As a Virginian I am so frustrated by the McDonnell campaign.  I've made my feelings known to the campaign..........bring Sarah to Virginia.  When she campaigned here last year she brought thousands of people out to see her.

Are we going to squander 2012 on the Mitts, Tims, and Mikes of our party?  Can they really fight the Obama/MSM machine?  Sarah can.  She knows what's waiting for her if she runs and believe me, she's getting ready.

Good Lord, guys get out of the way.  Conservative women are here to save the day.  We've got the cojones you lost along the way.

TexMex,  October 14, 2009 7:14 PM

Why not have Palin come in the last week of the campaign? Like she did in GA for Saxby. One last push to get all the conservatives to come out? Didn't she hit 3 sites in one day? Do a blitz of the state then head out. Dems won't have enough time to counter and you'll have an extra fired up base ready to storm the polls. I swear we have the biggest dumbasses in our party....

GAHanson,  October 14, 2009 7:37 PM

Actually, Gov. Palin did 4 rallies for Chambliss in GA the day before the election, 2 in the morning, bringing out 2,000 and 2,500 respectively, 1 in the early afternoon which brought out close to 4,000 and 1 in the late afternoon which had 6,000.  Romney had 2 campaign stops, each attracting about 100 people.  Huckabee piggybacked on a Fair Tax rally which had 2,000.  McCain attracted 2,000 to the rally he went to.  Interestingly enough, Bill Clinton campaigned in downtown Atlanta, and only drew 3,000 for Martin, and poor AlGore drew only 500 for Martin.  Chambliss went on to win by 15 points where he originally had just a 3 or 4 point lead.  McDonnell could very well do the same thing, but his staff is primarily Romney people, and the RNC may have warned him not to do so, the spineless idiots.

Bestbud,  October 14, 2009 7:57 PM

Go Heinz.. best of luck.. you must be the right guy because of who you are with!

section9,  October 14, 2009 7:59 PM

The Marianas have been the red-headed stepchild of America's Pacific possessions since the end of the War. They mostly serve as tourist destinations for the Japanese now, and are sorely in need of investment from the Mainland, the lion's share of which goes to Hawaii.

America is investing in the islands right now as we reorient our defense posture towards the Pacific and away from Europe.

section9,  October 14, 2009 8:00 PM

Oh, it is worth noting that the world's first atomic strike force was based in Tinian in the Marianas and struck Hiroshima and Nagasaki from there.

Recovering Democrat,  October 14, 2009 8:08 PM

Great picture, and great post!

It seems to me that the people who support Sarah Palin openly and unabashedly in public are those who aren't ashamed of their convictions, and don't care what others think of them. I look at Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. Both of them are recovering addicts. I know a little bit about addition recovery. It involves A LOT of introspection, a LOT of work, and when you emerge, you are beholden to no one but your higher power. You've acknowledged your faults, you've asked for forgiveness, in some cases, you've lost everything, you've forgiven your enemies, and you're truly FREE. You're under no illusions about life anymore. You're no longer lying to yourself.

That's really the lynchpin of Sarah supporters. They're people who are FREE of the puppet strings! They're people who march to their own drumbeat, and thank God for this country. They're people who, no thanks to Joe Biden, do NOT  think it sounds "corny" to be proud of their country. They're organic patriots - not canned!

I'm a Recovering Democrat ... and sometimes I catch myself feeling slightly embarrassed to speak out openly in favor of Sarah around my liberal friends. But seeing TRUE patriots who support Sarah inspires me to get a backbone, too!

TexMex,  October 14, 2009 8:44 PM

Damn, someone is on top of his game ;) Right, though, why not model the Saxby playbook? Why sneak by with 3 or 4 pts when you can sail over the top? Spineless idiots indeed?

TexMex,  October 14, 2009 8:50 PM

I too have liberal friends, love 'em really we have a lot of fun together, but when they find out that I'm a Palin fan they usually respond with either, "Ew! or Well now I've lost a little respect for you!" Sentiment doesn't last long, but for that moment they're appalled with me. I never back down from my support. That sets them back a little. Then I say, "would you have that same reaction if I said I like Mitt Romney or Ron Paul?" The reply is usually, "No or Who's Ron Paul?" And I say, "See you don't have that reaction to Romney b/c you know he can't win against Obama and isn't a threat to him. Palin worries you because she appeals to someone like me: 26 yr old female, urban dwelling, law student. I should be a Democrat. Instead I back Palin. That SHOULD worry you."

Then we continue on bitching about law school and drinking like sailors on shore leave. But the Liberals should be worried about Palin. Her appeal is greater than they realize and she could very well be the first woman president. More importantly, she could be the first CONSERVATIVE president since Reagan.

hrh,  October 14, 2009 8:54 PM

Thanks, TexMex, you are on the front lines. Keep it up, your friends will listen to you, and just may pay slightly more attention to SP news because they respect you and you respect her.

This is how word of mouth works. Woo hoo! Keep up the good word. :)

hrh,  October 14, 2009 8:56 PM

OT: BOR just had Letterman's countdown of things more fun to do than reading the Palin memoir, which has a really attractive graphic of Sarah. Dave and Bill are giving her book Soooooo much publicity. Love it! :)

hrh,  October 14, 2009 8:56 PM

Sheya, is your DVR on the job?

TexMex,  October 14, 2009 9:02 PM

who had the attractive graphic? BOR or Letterman? Ugh, Letterman skeeves me! Whenever he has an attractive actress on he always leers at them and lingers just a little too long when he hugs them. He has a major thing for Palin. It would be humorous if it wasn't so creepy.

GAHanson,  October 14, 2009 9:13 PM

Check out the video of Chrissy Matthews:

Here is video of Chris Matthews talking with Allen Olson a SC Tea Party organizer about Sarah Palin.

Chris Matthews asked Olson "who would you like to see replace people like Lindsey Graham?" Olson answered "I believe Sarah Palin would make an awesome President." he also said Sen. Jim DeMint "would be great for Vice President."

Matthews then asked Olson "you think Sarah Palin is qualified to be President of the United States, based upon her partial single term as governor of Alaska?"

http://www.freedomslighthouse.com/2009/10/chris-matthews-you-think-sarah-palin-is.html

Apparently, Chrissy thinks the president rules the world.

i have a dvr and record beck, hannity and bor  but havent the foggest idea how to do anything withit other than watch it on tv. is there a training course somewhere to be able to down load clips from it?

hrh,  October 14, 2009 9:29 PM

Letterman's graphic for this ongoing gag. I read somewhere else that he's going to be doing it for the next 15 days or something like that. It's a pic of Sarah from the VP debate, a night which I think she glowed throughout. No bad pix from that night exist.

Typically the items were violent and unfunny - getting run over by a lawnmower, driving into a tree, walking into traffic - those were a few of them ...

RINO-Hunter,  October 14, 2009 9:29 PM

Here's a cartoon about Sarah I found posted at FR.  I'm pretty sure it's poking fun at Obama and the Nobel Prize people (if not, they're really reaching in order to disparage her).

KentonAK,  October 14, 2009 9:38 PM

OT-

How might Sarah fair in any potential 2012 debates?
This clip from 2006 Alaska Republican Gubernatorial Debate shows what scares the wee-wee out of Obama and puppet-master,Axelrod:

NYPalinPower,  October 14, 2009 9:39 PM

Thank you Adam, so good to hear from you!  That is great news, I hope Heinz wins.  Maybe he will put the Northern Marianas on the map just the way Sarah put Alaska on the map :-)

narciso,  October 14, 2009 9:40 PM

Seeing as the Russian head of their National Security Council, an old line KGB/SVR thug has threatened a first strike, despite Obama;s entreaties I don't find that cartoon amusing in the least

Lipstick,  October 14, 2009 9:40 PM

More prove of why I love the Guv. Like me she has layovers in airports. Are you kidding me. She isn't sitting in some club drinking drinks. No she is roaming around the airport killing time. How cool is that???

Lipstick,  October 14, 2009 9:50 PM

I zoomed in on that pic and guess what Sarah has in her hand? Her Blackberry. Guess she still cannot live without it. She must have a water proof one. I am convinced she takes it in the shower with her.

Beehive,  October 14, 2009 9:58 PM

Lipstick
I think this lay over might have been the Hong Kong Trip.

narciso,  October 14, 2009 9:59 PM

That clip shows what she can do when not constrained by the handlers, it's what she did on the trail, and at Evansville and Auburn and HK. Those stupid interviews where she had to walk on eggshells, not to deviate from McCain's campaign, showed the difference. A lot of the energy seemed to flow out of her, when she said things she really didn't believe.

onexsturtle,  October 14, 2009 10:03 PM

LOL, that is funny. At first I thought it was disparaing her too, but then I looked at it and it was just a comic strip to describe Obama's sorry reason for receiving the Nobel.

CharterOakie,  October 14, 2009 10:06 PM

That was my thought, too.  People of all ages and backgrounds are drawn to Sarah.  Some are repelled.  Spiritual phenomenon.

onexsturtle,  October 14, 2009 10:09 PM

Being a huge supporter of Palin even though I'm a registered Democrat, at first I felt a bit insecure expressing my support for her around liberals at work (and being in CA), but now I say it proudly if the topic comes up.

Tammy Bruce is also a fierce supporter of Palin.

CharterOakie,  October 14, 2009 10:14 PM

RD - that's VERY well stated.  Excellent.

CharterOakie,  October 14, 2009 10:17 PM

TexMex - perfecto.

CharterOakie,  October 14, 2009 10:20 PM

That ALMOST makes we want to crank up the record player again.  Where's Nancy?

Recovering Democrat,  October 14, 2009 10:25 PM

Tex ... That was very inspirational! :-) Good for you, girl! I live in Kansas now so I'm in a definite red state situtation. But I have dozens of liberal friends that I've collected over the years in every town in which I've lived. Over the years, I was a liberal MAGNET. Ha! So, now that I'm no longer liberal, it's hard for me to know how to interact with them. I had one friend of more than 25 years "de-friend" me on Facebook and leave me a nasty message. All because I posted my view of Van Jones' ridiculous "green jobs" rhetoric. This friend of mine told me how hateful I'd become, that I didn't seem like his old friend and he didn't want to associate with someone who he believed supported Sarah Palin and the rightwing hatemongers.

I finally wrote back telling him he was being extremely judgmental. We actually had a good conversation. I told him indeed that I loved Sarah Palin. He apologized and re-friended me. Ha!

I think when we stand our ground respectfully, we win respect.

Anonymous,  October 14, 2009 10:26 PM

well, we know what Dave finds more fun to do than reading her memoir.  Or should I say who he finds more fun to do.

But hey, he has the #1 show on Late Night and if he wants to spend two straight weeks giving her free publicity and plugging her book, that's fine with me.  You know how much some people would pay to have their book advertised for 2 weeks on a show that draws 5M+ viewers a night?

Recovering Democrat,  October 14, 2009 10:27 PM

Getting run over by the lawnmower ... I think that actually would describe what it feels like to read Mitt Romney's memoir ;-)

onexsturtle,  October 14, 2009 10:28 PM

I still have my liberal friends, so for those that do not want to talk about politics, I just stay out of that topic. It is hard because now I'm this political junkie. :-\

Anonymous,  October 14, 2009 10:51 PM

I wonder if she's watching Alaska State Troopers on NatGeo?

Anyway, just some more historical trends about 2012 and why I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about Romney or Pawlenty.  I think Huckabee is the biggest obstacle in her path.

Romney will be 65 in 2012, 66 2 months after Inauguartion 2013. 15 yrs or so older than Obama.  In general, Seniors don't due to well in Presidential elections.  Especially against younger, charismatic opponents.  See McCain v Obama, Dole V Clinton, Bush v Clinton.  Even Bush in 2004 was much more vigorous and charismatic than the dour 60+ Kerry.  In the last 150 yrs or so only 1 guy over 65 has ever been elected President, Reagan in 1980.  Needless to say, Romney is no Reagan.  After McCain and Dole you'd hope the GOP would learn their lesson about old guys vs young, charismatic guys.

Also, he's from MA and wouldn't win MA against Obama.  Guys who don't win their home state don't win the WH period.  I think it's happened once in 100+ yrs.  MA is heavily blue and hasn't gone GOP since 1984.  Parties tend not to nominate people from states they lost in the last election, let alone the last 6.  He didn't get 50% in MA in 2002, after the GOP had topped 50% 3 straight elections prior.  They lost big in 2006 after 4 yrs of him.  Not a good sign.  Arguably Romney is responsible for Obama.  If he had done well enough to beat Patrick in 2006, Obama likely doesn't run as it was Axelrod's successful campaign for Patrick that served as the model for Obama's bid.

Pawlenty is 13 years younger than Romney so age isn't really an issue.  But he is from a heavily bluse state in MN that hasn't gone GOP since 1972.  Again, not a good place to start.  He likely won't even be competitive in his home state.  He didn't top 50% in either of his 2 elections, getting roughly 45 and 47.  His margin of victory decreased from 8 pts in 02 to 1 pt in 06.  His popularity didn't even seem to be enough to stop Al Franken from winning.  Not good trends.  You can say "Well, Stevens lost in AK", but he would have won if not for that fraudulent conviction that was overturned soon after.  And Begich was at least the mayor of the largest city, not some comedian with zero political expreience.  And I simply don't see him competing with Obama in terms of $.

Again, though, the GOP doesn't nominate people from states it has lost previously and people who can't win their home state.  He also has the unknown thing going against him as no unknown has won the GOP nomination since Wilkie in 1940.  They nominate people who are nationally known and have a profile.

So, I don't really see either of them winning the nomination,  Huckabee is her biggest obstacle as he eats in to the evangelical/rural/conservative base she'll need in IA and SC.  Without Huckabee I have a tough time seeing her lose IA to Romney or Pawlenty when it's 45% very conservative and 60% evangelical.  With him, it gets a bit dicier.  But I'd see the party backing her over Huck as he's shown no ability to raise money.  If she does win in IA, then that's all it will take.  If Romney couldn't top 25% after a year against McCain, Rudy and Fred who didn't even bother to show up and Huckabee who had no money, all the while spending more money and time there than everyone else combined, I don't see him doing much bettre against a more formidable opponent 4 yrs later.

Recovering Democrat,  October 14, 2009 10:57 PM

"bunned Alaska woman" ... That is hilarious. And yes, it was a total slam on Obama.

I am a HUGE Terminator fan. I also watch Sarah Connor Chronicles on Fox. I think the closest parody SNL or any other "sentient" comedian could do would be Sarah Palin as Sarah Connor!!!

Either that or Sarah as Lara Croft Tomb Raider.

Seriously, the comedians are missing the boat. In their liberal hissiness about her intellectual chops they're completely OVERLOOKING that Sarah is the most kick-ass American HEROINE we've seen since possibly Amelia Earhardt!

Recovering Democrat,  October 14, 2009 11:02 PM

Recovering Democrat,  October 14, 2009 11:27 PM

Hey, Tommy, how can I contact you about something?

TexMex,  October 15, 2009 12:06 AM

Ah, I hate that! I have about a 50-50 split of political parties on my FB. I post pretty tongue in cheek things about the President and sometimes I have flame wars on my walls between my lib and conservative friends. To this day none have de-friended me for my mean posts against Obama. In fact, I actually enjoy the back and forth. As long as they bring the funny we have a great time. It's horribly lame for someone to get upset over that.. Glad you patched it up with your buddy.

latinchic,  October 15, 2009 12:20 AM

Good for you. Yup, I've got the same thing going on with my friends on FB. Half are liberals...except they can't cite what liberals stand for.  So really, it's just become too easy. I'm respectful, but firm.

lmg,  October 15, 2009 12:28 AM

If Sarah goes there to campaign and draws her usual crowds she could sink the island.

lmg,  October 15, 2009 12:36 AM

The ocean is very deep there, too. The Marianas Trench is about 33,000 feet deep.

That Isabella is cutie.  That is a great name too.  Those german names can be pretty harsh-sounding, but Isabel or Isabella is nice.

techno,  October 15, 2009 1:28 AM

I agree with the analysis except that I do think Mitt, despite his age will be formidable because of his money. It didn't get him too far last time because of McCain's war record and he didn't play well with conservatives.

This time he's going to run as a moderate like McCain. I can see him gaining traction on his side, but if Pawlenty gains traction he may undercut Mitt.

I think Huckabee will run but if Palin runs, I don't see him getting very far. But what he could do is split the evangelical vote enough to let Mitt come up the middle.

Neo,  October 15, 2009 2:21 AM

And Chambliss thanked her by throwing her under the bus on the 'Death Panels' comment.  I sent $$ to Saxby on Sarah's nod.  I'll not make that mistake again.
