Gutting fish and political hegemony
On “The O’Reilly Factor” tonight, Dennis Miller offered a two-part theory regarding his thoughts on the motive and/or reasoning for the potential content of Gov. Palin’s memoir “Going Rogue,” a book he nor anyone else – save for Palin and a few others – has actually read:
1. Play it “close to the vest” and run for President;
2. Tell all, and become another “Jackie [sic] Susann.”
In other words, tell the truth and become a media sideshow, or distort the truth and welcome to the Rubber Chicken Derby. And George Lucas would have us think only Siths deal in absolutes!
Miller is one of the better-known conservative celebrities out there, and he is cashing paychecks on “The Factor” by sending back-handed compliments directed at Gov. Palin, which is no doubt exactly what Bill “Gov. Palin is Welcome to Come On The Factor Anytime” O’Reilly wants. I gave Miller the benefit of the doubt the first time around when he joined the annoying chorus questioning Gov. Palin’s intelligence, but geez, Dennis, whose side are you on? I know Bill likes to “play it close to the vest” by wandering about the political stratosphere under cover of “looking out for you,” but Dennis, you have a greener meadow in which to graze.
I don’t want to insult anyone’s intelligence, so I’ll degrade my own. In 1993 I graduated from high school and moved to Freeman’s Guest Ranch, located 18 miles outside of The Open Air Insane Asylum that is Creede, Colo. I worked as a dishwasher in town and lived in a ranch bunkhouse for free. While there, I stumbled upon a copy of the Jacqueline Susann novel “Valley of the Dolls” and freely admit that I read it in one sitting (that summer, to get off the point, I also read John Madden’s “Hey Wait A Minute, I Wrote A Book,” which is the “Absalom, Absalom!” of sporting literature).
“Valley of the Dolls” [consulting my book review cliché generator] “the sordid tale of three young women trying to make it in Hollywood.” Oh yeah, and “dolls” are barbiturates, and the bombshell actress gives in to, shall we say, back-of-the-Volkswagen coitus near the, um, end. Anyway – take a very deep breath - it was a publishing sensation and was turned into a movie and in a pique of brilliance was used by a young Roger Ebert as the inspiration for the script “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” (itself feeling Polanski-ish while featuring a Phil Spector clone) which was turned into a motion picture by The Stanley Kubrick of B-Movies Himself Russ Meyer and if one wanted to jam any more Hollywood Babylon into one sentence one would find the space too small to fit the Higgs boson.
In other words, Miller – who’s not read Gov. Palin’s book and is not privy to her next move – just reduced the potential of Gov. Palin’s unpublished, best-selling work to either a cynical move meant to thrust her political career forward, or a cynical attempt to enrich herself and her family; or, more salaciously, he just compared it to the work of a woman best-known for hyper-stylizing Hollywood hedonism and shamelessness. Ergo, it’s outside the realm of possibility that Gov. Palin might actually have something substantive to say beyond the politically-unrelated details the media happily dug up the moment she mentioned those Styrofoam columns. Yeah, it’s not like the public’s not acquainted with her writing by now.
Like you, gentle reader, I’ve not read “Going Rogue” either, but unlike Dennis Miller (a guy who I liked long before he became a conservative) I don’t think Gov. Palin clocks her moves based on Rasmussen polls and talking heads. Of the cancerous fallouts of the Clinton “War Room” mentality is that right-thinking people assume that everyone interested in public office is a slave to polls, focus groups, Beta-boy pontification and really radical rules. I’m naïve, sure, but I think some people – not just Gov. Palin – actually seek higher office to curb the action of government rather than propagate it. As an Oklahoman, I’m not naïve when I cite the career of Sen. Tom Coburn.
For supporters of Gov. Palin, the post 7/3 attitude came into view when, shortly after announcing her resignation as Governor, she fielded media questions wearing coveralls while gutting fish. Say what you will about Gov. Palin, but an Obama-like obsession with media- and pundit-perception doesn’t seem to be at the top of her list of pathos. While Pres. Obama seems to think those candids of him showing poor position while wearing sweatpants and “playing basketball” project an image of … something … the rest of us are quite aware that Gov. Palin leaves little to the imagination when giving the media a look into her life. She is who she is without apology, and 13 months later, many still don’t get it: her frankness, her ability to be who she is without apology, pomp or circumstance is part of her charm, usurped only by her unabashed conservatism.
The world has been taken over by Caufieldian phonies. It’s no longer grounded in political philosophy, as the GOP has as many phonies as the beer-nuts currently running the show. Our lines used to break on simple concepts of Donkey-GOPer, Lib-Con, Right-Left. To a small degree, those still matter, but the tidal swell of outrage is not any of those, it’s Common and Elite. Elites track polls and studiously reword position papers, while Commons go to Tea Party protests while telling their Rep they're mad as hell and will take it only for another year or so. Our misguided hero Newt tells us to homogenize and support a pro-choice, pro-card-check, pro-taxemtilltheybleed candidate in the Empire State’s 23rd, and we say bugger off, we’ll elect a conservative.
Note to Newt and aspiring political philosophers everywhere: political hegemony isn’t attained through philosophical homogeny.
As the mood spreads, more people will take Gov. Palin in those coveralls as she sends out those Facebook messages. Since she has been in the national spotlight, Gov. Palin has not let down the Commons among us, she’s never betrayed who she is or from where she came. I’ll take Sarah Palin gutting fish in front of a camera rather than Newt Gingrich gutting conservatives behind the scenes any day of the week.
As for Dennis Miller, maybe he’ll change his tune once he bothers to read the book.

Dennis's comments were irrational. Her interview with Oprah is part of her BOOK TOUR, not a campaign interview. It is perfectly logical for her to go on Oprah to talk about the book. For her political intentions let us not forget her words "if I die, politically, I die." To date Sarah has NOT given anyone any reason to question her integrity nor her independence.
DITTOS,
you summed it up well.
Sarrah has much to offer.
we are here to help encourage people to listen to her
Valley of the Dolls?...I read that book when I was Teenager...Whew!
Back on topic...
You Da Man...C. Brooks Kurtz!
Great Smack-Down!!!
What kept popping into my mind when I heard Miller's comments was "If I die politically, I die politically"
I haven't read the book either, but I guessing the above phrase is going to resonate throughout.
My guess is that Palin is going to say exactly what needs to be said in order to clear her name and get the truth out.
So if Gov. Palin wants to run for POTUS she has to keep her mouth shut? I think BOR is mad that he didn't get the first interview. Dennis and BOR probably had a nice girlie chat before the taping.
"nice girlie chat"...hehehe...
First reaction to her book will be "I can't believe she said that, she's dead to me".
Second reaction will be, "Damn, that woman is right. She's not the fool I thought she was."
Think Camille and death panels.
Excellent C Brooks !<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>
"Political hegemony is not obtained through philosophical homogeny"
Quote of the week! Well said, C. Brooks! I love your writing style. Miller may be a conservative, but he tends to put his comedic attempts at the forefront rather than political substance.
Miller...bla..bla..bla...bla..bla..bla...Whatever...
I mean come on. BOR give Obama the spotlight on his show right before McCain's convention speech. I wonder how much that hurt McCain and Palin?
Miller can be really entertaining and is right about a lot of things.
When it comes to Palin tho, he seems to being misinformed/ following the media's lead.
Mia, is Miller "worthy" of the O apostrophe treatment, or is that only reserved for liberals?
Whit...You are one Intelligent Chick!...O's are only for Whack'o's
ellen...anybody that doesn't have they're facts straight...Irritates Me...
soooo....my come back is... Whatever....
I like Miller...But...he made a DUmb statement...There you Go...
Oh, gotcha.
It seemed like you were anti-Miller.
And like some people were talking about on this site yesterday, we don't want to blindly follow Palin or automatically hate her critics.
But its all good.
And I agree, it was dumb. I can't figure out why Miller is so stupid when it comes to Palin because he is a pretty bright guy. My guess is that he has hung around the LA crowd and Hollywood a bit too long to see this issue clearly.
Can we stop the chat that Dennis Miller is a Conservative? He's at best a half-libertarian. Quit the idiot talk that he is a conserative. Otherwise, a dynamite column. Thanks Mr. Kurtz.
ellen...No problem...I'm weird...sometimes.. when I express myself...I forget that people here... don't really know me.....Believe me...The circle of people I hang out with...know what I mean...LOL!...They call me...
Black and White...no gray....
Bingo! You get it. He is an insider in the LA/Hollywood world. THAT is why he has not figured out Sarah yet. He has not done his homework on her and like most in that industry can be quite cynical. Can you really blame him? I like him. He's pretty funny. I'll never forget after the mortgage meltdown when he told Bill that Barney Frank should go to jail, but that Barney would like that. Man, did I laugh a storm.
Just watched the miller segment, O’Reilly didn’t really say anything to change my opinion that he loves the Governor. Miller seems to be holding a big grudge against Opera and is now pi**ed at the governor for going on her show.
Some of the things Miller says could be used my some loons to champion their hatred for the Governor, such a clip does not belong on my channel, so sorry guys no link provided for this clip.

Miller was not his usual self tonight on BOR. I do think he will give Sarah a fair shake and he will
eat his words if he feels he has said the wrong thing or made a mistake. I have heard him do that before. This is going to be a wild ride for all of us. There will be a lot of good things and a lot of hateful things said about Sarah in the next month or two. We got to get our steel helmets on.
Who said Miller or BOR are conservatives? They are both centrists, moderates.I completely disagree with his assesment of the potential content of Sarahs book, however I am with him on Mrs.Palin going on Oprah first.Sarah lost a lot in my eyes ,going to this big liberal, obama 'lover"
.SNL,Couric,Gibson,Lauer ,Letterman..........Oprah... Everyone of them tried to get her ,show her in worst possible light.
Didnt you learn your lesson Governor?
I don’t understand why people are making such a big deal of the Oprah thing.
By going on Oprah first she is “Going Rogue”. Come on, who would have 48 hours ago predicted that Oprah will be her first interview. Everybody had a list of suggestions and guesses, some included Oprah somewhere right at the bottom and others didn’t even consider her in the first place.
Governor Palin is unpredictable, she always defies conventional wisdom and she always comes through.
Finally, why is it so hard to understand that for now, Governor Palin simply wants to sell books? Yes that’s right. She has a story to tell and she worked very hard to get tell it. Now it’s ready and she wants to sell as many books as she can. Like or not, Oprah sells books. Personally I am seeing the Oprah interview as a straight forward marketing strategy, not political. I hope sje sells a lot of books and makes loads of money. She surly deserves it!
There is a time for everything. Now is the time for the governor to sell as many books as she can. Politics will come later.
haha. black and white is definitely a good thing, just a little difficult to decipher in text!
"Barney would like that"...hehehe...
right on Juju...if she runs for President, we have to get double steel backs and heads. We just need to follow her example...she is still going strong. Some of us may have already bailed out. I admire Sarah immensely. If she is still taking it and moving forward, that is an encouragement for me to keep marching with her no matter what.
"Bla"ck and white...yes!!!:) Most of Mia's comments contain the letters "bla" in some form! :)
O'blaba etc. :)
ALA, let's trust her judgement. She will make a few moves we shall disagree with on this journey to the Whitehouse but she is us let's keep supporting her.
ellen...I'm Black and White.. to a fault...It wouldn't matter who screwed up...I would call them on it...Even... Sarah Palin...
hehehe...Good one!...Have I ever told you...
That I think Your SARCASTIC???
Me? Sarcastic? No way!
You are right Sheya. There is no reason to get worked up over Sarah being on Oprah. Shed sell alot of books anyway, but this gets her to another audiance. She will be ready. She knows the media is out to get her, so she will not be blind sided by anything. I would be shocked if Oprah went MSNBC on her. That would permently change peoples opinion of Oprah and she does not want to do that. Endorsing Obama is one thing, but treating a perfectly nice woman like Sarah Palin like crap on TV will hurt Oprah more then Sarah. After all, if she does it will just confirm to anyone who had any doubts that the media ELITE is out to get her. This is one interview. She will do plenty of others.
i think there is a big difference between going on the air with someone who might not be a supporter but has not been overly hostile and going on with someone who has been out to destroy you and your family. OW is in the fomer category and all of mscnbc is in the other. confronting someone on the other side like OW is something that does make sense and no reason to think the governor will not do well now that she is her own boss.
by the way i think you can make the same distinction among the late night comedians. jay leno may poke fun at palin from time to time and we may even think some of his jokes go over the line-but that is his job and he has not singled out palin for this treatment. this is obviously very different then the pervert on cbs or the nut on hbo and so i would not be surprised to see her do leno but not the others.
Whitney...Do you know the definition of the word..."Delusional"???
One of the things I find most admirable about Governor Palin is her congruence and consistency. She is who she says she is without apology and without pretense. It seems like Miller is like many others in the media and elsewhere who just can't believe there is not some other motive. Sarah wrote her book because she knew it was the right thing to do. I'm so looking forward to the gift that she is giving all of us to know her even better. She does the things she does to serve others, God, family, country. If that includes a run at the presidency, awesome. If that includes dedicating her life to serving in some other capacity, that will be awesome too. She truly has a servant's heart. Hopefully more people will come to realize that as we all get to know Sarah and her American life. I feel humbled and blessed to have that chance.
I thought her book is breaking all records on pre-orders.Who needs Oprah.Cant yo guys see it?Not everyone is a political junkie like us .Many average Americans will just overhear- Sarah Palin was chosen to go on Oprah .That Oprah must be the biggest show on Tv.Yes,Yes I heard that yesterday getting my lunch.
I don't know what you're talking about, Mia.
I listened to Miller Show podcasts. He prepares "off the cuff" lines that he works in, reusing many. He likes the "smart, hip" lines.
He was taken in by Obama during the primaries. He liked the Obama style, the made for TV fake persona, the "cool" under pressure. Miller was easily conned.
His comments you quoted were not said because Miller believes them, they were said because Miller thought they would make viewers think they were different, cool, smart and insightful. They were just like stand up comedy routine lines. They have no real meaning to him.
He is fairly smart, and fairly clueless. If he didn't try to be hip and funny, he might be worth listening to. He has some good interviews.
But, I quit listening. Miller sells sizzle, I prefer steak.
(Sarah is steak. Miller may not be able to see that. He has lived in a weird world, and his discernment is limited.)
Whitney...You LIE!
I'm going to give Miller a pass on this one. From listening to him in the past, I know he like the Gov. He loves how she irritates those libs. He says how smart she is by cashing in on the book deal.
this was the 1st time I disagreed with Miller so I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt even though I think he is wrong.
maybe he needs to come to this website an read the write up about why Sarah needs to go on the Oprah to talk to people that might be outside the base. It makes sense to me

In Russ Meyer's BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, all-girl rock band the Kelly Affair moves to Los Angeles in pursuit of fame and fortune. Upon meeting wealthy rock scenester Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell (John Lazar) at one of his lavish parties, they believe they've met the man who can bring them fame. Changing their name to the Carrie Nations, they navigate their way through a maze of sexual misadventures, drugs, and brushes with some very unpleasant characters only to find that fame comes at a price. Livening up the considerably frantic proceedings are Meyer starlets Edy Williams and Erica Gavin (VIXEN), as well as an appearance by the Strawberry Alarm Clock. Finally invited to work within a major studio (20th Century Fox) following the enormous success of 1968's VIXEN, Meyer, along with screenwriter Roger Ebert, created the ultimate sex, drugs, and rock & roll film of the psychedelic era. An altogether odd mixture of comedy, drama, and left-field shocks punctuated with memorably wacky lines, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS lets Meyer's reliably decadent formula mingle agreeably with the psychedelia of the time.

Fun-loving bombshells Kelly, Casey and Pet have a rock band, and they're headed to Hollywood to make it big. Thank you manajordan for your comments.
They are well spoken as usual. ;)
This is what many are thinking. Anyone who wants to sell books, go on all the tv shows and does interviews. It is very predictable. I, like many others thought Gov. Palin would do something different...
But then from a practical perspective, you write a book to sell it. So I guess she will do what will sell the most books.
It won't bother me if she did one or two interviews, but if you see her on every talk show giving interviews, than I have to agree with Miller, she is not going rogue...
Good!
Thanks your the best.
A ... The best lines I read today....Miller sells sizzle, I prefer steak.

sarah rocks 2012 .
I like Miller, generally speaking, there was a time when he was broadcast on the local station with Laura Ingraham before she became a confirmed Mitt bot. But there are a lot of people who don't know her compelling story, and you have to get people to read it, who otherwise wouldn't

Like a lot of people, Miller's main problem with Palin is that he's jealous. She is known by literally everyone, he, on the other hand is primarily known by the BOR audiance, and that of his radio show. I know he's written several books, but my guess is that none of them got anywhere near the best seller list. Miller is just an annoying little man with a big mouth.
Hey Pip. nice going with the LOTUS site . Love the little notes you have for each picturers.

Sarah want the biggest bang for the buck. In this case the biggest bang is Oprah and the buck is the truth. There is a lot more at play here than meets the eye. Sarah just all of sudden decide to do Oprah with the sole intent to sell books that is not the Sarah I know. It's to repair a damaged image the MSM has created especially with suburban females and such. I'm sure this was take about, thought about and weight the + vs. -. The pulses won and I find no fault with the decision.

"Going rogue" is a phrase I suppose subject to many interpretations and for that reason I will first lay out 10 aspects of what I think "going rogue" means in the context of Sarah Palin and 10 aspects which it does not mean. First what it does mean:
1) Sarah's candidacy will focus on cultivating the loyalty of the grassroots rather than seeking the "laying on of hands" to her by the GOP establishment.
2) Sarah will be following the Reagan "wilderness" playbook (1977-1980) to the letter with a significant touch of 21stc technology thrown in while the other candidates will be following the standard GOP playbook that RINO's have followed.
3) As the definition of rogue is a dangerous solitary animal Sarah aims to be just that to the Obama agenda as she upsets the apple cart.
4) One of Sarah's charm is her ability to slice and dice Obama with in a mischievous manner and with humor
5) Sarah is inclined to MISBEHAVE according to what political pundits, the MSM or the GOP elites expect of her
6) Sarah's advocacy of Reagan conservatism over Democratic Lite certifies "going rogue" as an ideological chasm that will be hard to bridge
7) "Going rogue" signifies Sarah's desire to break away from the herd in a political sense so that she clearly is defined as an individual rather than a part of a group
8) "Going rogue" I believe signifies that Sarah recognizes that her opponents are unscupulous and not restrained by moral or ethical principles and that she must in turn in guerrila style return fire and go on the attack consistently rather than be like George Bush who was always defending his actions or remained mute.
9) "Going rogue" signifies her break from the McCain campaign, its incompetent handlers and the ill-conceived decisions that were made throughout the campaign.
10) And "going rogue" signifies that Sarah will answer to no one except God, that she did not seek political office "to mingle with the right people at cocktail parties" and in this sense will remain aloof.
Now what "going rogue" does not mean:
1) appearing on popular programs like Oprah to generate a broader political appeal; "going rogue" does NOT mean Sarah can only appear on PBS, C-SPAN, and the Christian Broadcasting Network.
2) "going rogue" does NOT mean that Sarah will appear in public as a dowdy frump; instead she will dress for the occasion
3) along with #2 Sarah will NOT refrain from makeup on the campaign trail, having her hair done, or having her appearance attended to
4) Sarah will be conventional in fundraising for herself and the party by giving speeches to masses. She will walk on to the stage or up to the podium and not descend from a hot air balloon or be shot out of a cannon.
5) "Going rogue" IMHO does NOT mean that Sarah willn never give interviews to the Sunday talk shows, appear on 60 Minutes or talk to prominent mainstream journalists
6) "Going rogue" does NOT mean that Sarah will not be getting her ducks in a row and building a campaign infrastructure to ready herself for a long campaign. And obviously it does not mean she will be getting into the leadup to the primaries late as Fred Thompson did.
7) "Going rogue" does not mean that Sarah will refrain from hiring advisors, consultants and staff to help her as she moves forward and a polling firm to do polling on her behalf.
8) As a follow-up of #7 "going rogue" does NOT mean that Sarah is going to ignore the realities of a political campaign and that she is in a competition leading up to and during the primary season.
9) "Going rogue" does NOT mean that Sarah will be going third party.
10) And "going rogue" does not mean that Sarah will forsake God and his wisdom. It does mean however that she will feel "heavenly inspired" to take the Sarah Palin express to the lower 48 in an animated, determined fashion.
Manajordan,
we have known each other for over a year so you know that I have told you many times how intelligent your posts are. Here I go again.
Some years ago my perfect wife and I had a conversation about how long a letter should be. My wife said one page. I said as long as it needs to be to get across the point while still remaining interesting to the person receiving it.
I could not find a good answer to the question of the length of a letter. The closest I came was found in Emily Post's Book of Ediquette. Mrs. Post said every letter is a gift. Which is what you said.
Mrs. Palin is giving us all a 400 to 500 page gift. We should remember that and cherish that.
Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, and a big hell yeah!
Thanks so much gelston. God bless.
I agree JuJu.
Miller..geeez I don't even understand half of what he's saying.....lol.
I think he genuinely likes Sarah, his quote about her is is one of the better ones......
"I like her cuz she pisses off the right people"....spot on.
I also agree....Miller didn't sound like himself. Give him a break, He supports her, and everyone has a bad day.
Techno....."I occasioanally wander too much afar into the swamp to get eaten by the c4p crocodiles", ha ha me too...I feel your pain! :-)
techno,
As I said earlier....."eaten by c4p crocodiles". ha ha....me too man, me too.
I love your Couric statement. For some reason people usually have short memories, but not with that interview. If people are going to judge someone on that then all I can say is scr** 'em. I still think in 3 years from now people will remember the interview and the msm will probably show it time after time, BUT it just won't matter or have the same impact any longer.
I think by that time people will have the attitude "is that all you got" or "what have you done latley". In other words...time heals.
I think we all understand that if Sarah decides to run it will take lots of money. She can raise alot off this book. She ran her campaign in Alaska on a very small budget, but understands that a national campaign will cost alot more. Sarah cannot be bought so she will depend on her book sales. speaking engagements, and donations to pay her way. She will owe no one and will only serve the people of this country. I am glad she is going on Oprah. Why not? She can hold her own with anyone and she won't be shackled by anyone. She can and will say exactly what she believes. Anyone that thinks for one minute that Sarah is doing this for the money does not get Sarah Palin! She has been questioned at every turn but it just keeps turning out right for her. Faith and confidence. Go figure!
manajordan...
Im a little late on the scene today, your two key words are humbled and blessed... good! I didn't have a Joe Biden this time.
You said IT!... Sarah CONSISTENTLY exudes a servants-heart/serving others! Every time she rises with Gods blessings for a new day, or shows up and speaks, or doesn't speak a word.... but treats the world to her glorious SMILE!... it's like the involuntary act of her God given beating heart.
Miller and all the rest... caught up in their incessant self-gratifying analysis of her supposed alterer motives/intent... THERE ARE NONE!--other than serving/making a difference.
The only thing further to discuss is... HOW SARAH WILL GO ABOUT DOING SO!... and that is where we all, like you said, are humbled and blessed to be witnessing such a glorious event in this nations history.
Old Blue Eyes (Frank Sinatra) lyrics.... "I did it my way", come to mind.... Sarah's case, it will most certainly will be between her and God.
Whitney, your a treasure!

<span style="">Last night I was surprised that Dennis Miller implied that Sarah Palin appearing on Oprah’s was an indication that Palin has sold out. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My first thought was MR. O’s been on “Oprah”, “The View”, “Good Morning America”, “Letterman”, etc. and seems to have maintained his integrity. </span>
Cool pictures and comparison, Whit!
Pithy but not pecksniffian!
Oprah was not willing to give Sarah a podium during the campaign because she was and remains a big Obama supporter. Sarah is more willing to face a potentially hostile host than Obama is willing to appear on Fox. Sarah is not bad mouthing Oprah because she supports the opposition. This shows Sarah's character as an obvious difference to the whining of the Obama administration. I think this is a smart move and it highlights the courage of Sarah vs. the thin skinned Obama.
