Jonathan Martin Attempts to Create Controversy; Updated

Jonathan Martin, in a column today at the Politico, attempts to stir up controversy involving Governor Palin. A group in Iowa, The Iowa Family Policy Center, has decided to go through proper channels and contact Governor Palin’s agent, the Washington Speakers Bureau, to book her for an appearance on November 21:

A conservative Iowa group’s effort to lure Sarah Palin to its banquet next month has had an unintended effect: Rather than exciting conservatives about the prospect of a visit from the former Alaska governor, the group’s plan to raise a six-figure sum to bring her to the state has GOP activists recoiling at the thought of paying to land a politician's speaking appearance.

The Iowa Family Policy Center’s effort to cobble together $100,000 for Palin would represent a striking departure from customary practice in the first-in-the-nation state, these Republicans say, noting that a generation of White House hopefuls has paid their own way to boost their party and presidential ambitions.

So let me get this right, Mr. Martin. A private group would like to hear Governor Palin speak and, consequently, they contact the Washington Speaker’s Bureau, and this is evidence that she did something wrong? What, specifically, did she do wrong? After writing multiple paragraphs in an attempt to explain how horrible this is, Martin buries these nuggets in the middle of his story:

There is no indication that the former governor has requested a fee or that her decision whether to attend is being influenced by whether she’ll be paid.

[…]

But, money or not, it seems unlikely that Palin will appear for the event.

In other words, there is no point to Mr. Martin’s story other than to create false controversy involving Governor Palin. Matt Latimer referred to the Politico as Washington’s version of Variety. With non-stories like this, National Enquirer may be a more appropriate comparison.

Update by Doug: Josh Painter has also written about Martin's hit piece:

False? Misleading? Distorted? Deceptive? Biased? Anti-Palin? You betcha! That's Jonathan Martin. That's Politico. That's reprehensible. Why is Sarah Palin the only political figure Politico goes out of its way to treat in this manner?

Read the rest here.

Update by TR: Newsweek's Holly Bailey reports:

But hang on: did Palin actually ask the group to pay $100K for her appearance? An IFPC spokesman tells Martin he's "not personally aware" of a speaker's fee. "There may or may not be, I don't know," he tells Politico. For their part, the Palin camp tells NEWSWEEK there's no fee. Meg Stapleton, Palin's spokeswoman, tells your Gaggler that Palin "has not requested anything" and that she "does not charge people to campaign for them." According to Stapleton, Palin would instead cover such travel costs through her political-action committee, SarahPAC. Of course, that doesn't mean she's going to Iowa. Palin's book, Going Rogue, is due out Nov. 17, and she's got a major publicity tour planned around that, including a Nov. 16 appearance on Oprah. "We don't believe she will be able to attend with her tightly scheduled book tour, and the group has been told that through formal and informal channels," Stapleton says in an e-mail this morning. "However, it appears that some enthusiastic members are willing to try anything to entice the governor as we look at her schedule."

Here we go again.  Everybody and their mothers are allowed to be paid for speeches but not Gov. Palin.

Everybody and their mothers are allowed to write books for profit but not Gov. Palin.

Robert_Paulson,  October 29, 2009 11:54 AM

Politico's behavior here is disgraceful, but predictable. Hopefully, Sarah will find a way to fit in an Iowa trip of some sort in order to calm the waves until she's ready to campaign more heavily.

What else should we expect from a fellow who (or whose mother) doesn't know how to correctly spell his first name?

Puma.for.Life,  October 29, 2009 11:59 AM

I thought Meg stated yesterday that Palin was not attending. I was thinking they are coming out with a lot of anti-Palin stories lately; sure scared aren't they.  Did you see the article on Fox about the DNC health care ad that has an American Flag being written over in graffiti and one of the things scrawled on it is "death panels".  Boy, everyone wants to make a buck off of Palin. Well, I will stick with my favorite saying: "I don't care what they are saying about me, as long as they are talking."

Rachael,  October 29, 2009 12:06 PM

To be honest I'm confused about this whole thing, especially Team Sarah's involvement. They're trying to raise money to send Governor Palin to Iowa, because this group has invited her to speak? Do they not think she can pay her own way with SarahPAC? I don't understand how this can end well, especially considering it's not something Governor Palin has ever agreed to. In fact, it's the week her book comes out. Perhaps she's already scheduled an event elsewhere. If they don't raise the money, it looks like she didn't go because she wasn't "paid enough." If they do raise the money, and she doesn't go, it looks like she's "standing up her supporters." Again, I ask, how can this end well? In the future, shouldn't we maybe wait for an indication that the Governor would like to attend an event but somehow can't before we start tossing in money for it? I'm sure the money is going to SarahPAC if it doesn't happen, but how about we give our money directly to SarahPAC so that the Governor can decide what she wants to do with it instead of trying to force her into one particular event?

If I'm misrepresenting something please tell me now, because it seems like this whole "raise money to send the Gov to an event she could attend on her own and might not be able to attend at all" idea isn't really helping anything.

Politco is on a roll....yesterday or the day before, they had a headline about the $1.25 million
retainer for Palin's book.  But the way they had it worded and the article that followed stated that it was far less then the $6 plus million that had been floated.  NOW THEY ARE NOT THAT STUPID, LAZY MAYBE, BUT STUPID NO....They knew that the $1.25 was a retainer.  It is looking like they have their orders from the WH and they are playing it for all it is worth....guess they want to be sure they get the invite to the WH Christmas party.

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  October 29, 2009 12:10 PM

If such a story was written about Obama, the adminstration would call it a man-caused controversial non-story.

broadmoor,  October 29, 2009 12:11 PM

A pristine case-study of the way the news media has treated Palin since she first appeared on the scene... taking a non-story and twisting it into something discomforting and unseemly, and hanging it around her neck.  It's like a game with them.  They're loathesome cretins.  But at least more and more people have grown savvy to all this.

JeanA,  October 29, 2009 12:12 PM

This is why Gov. Palin needs Twitter.  She could shoot off a tweet that said: Jonathon Martin is at it again making things up, trying to create a story that isn’t there.

Jonathan Martin=Chris Matthew's Butt Boy on MSNBC

Someday I will take another trip to DC and ask for a tour of the Politico offices and Chris Matthew's Hardball studio.  I will bring along a large metal clamping device and get Martin, Matthews, and Mike Allen in a room and give them my version of a vesectomy.

narciso,  October 29, 2009 12:12 PM

You know I wondered about that seeing it's for an anti same sex referendum, which isn't one of her priorities, if it was a pro life event, maybe, but not the week that her book rolls out

GAHanson,  October 29, 2009 12:13 PM

You have to read the entire article, the $100,000 that they are attempting to raise is to rent a large venue, lighting, printing costs, ticket sales, and other administrative type stuff, it has absolutely nothing to do with paying Gov. Palin to appear.

Rachael,  October 29, 2009 12:17 PM

Okay, so they're still trying to raise money so that Governor Palin can appear. Even if it's not paying her way or whatever, I still don't understand how it can end well if/when she can't go. Just my opinion. :)

Rachael:

How about you get your information from Governor Palin or her spokesperson Meg Stapleton before you over analyze the situation here?  Meg Stapleton already put out a statement regarding Iowa.

Jonathan Martin decided to take it upon himself to find some GOP Iowans to further the story to make the narrative to his liking.  You are buying the Politico story hook, line, and sinker, along with Kathryn Lopez at NRO (not surprised by that).  If you keep listening to liberal reporters all the time instead of what the Governor or her spokespeople have stated, it "will not end well."

Western,  October 29, 2009 12:29 PM

POLITICO is an establishment outlet for the MSM.

The editor-in-chief and executive editor are former political reporters for the Washington Post.

90% of their articles/blogs about Sarah are framed in a negative and disparaging tone towards Sarah.  Their editoral bias is blatantly obvious, especially from Ben Smith and Jonathan Martin
Even worse, there is significant PDS comments on their website.

Doug - upon further review, the misspelling of "Jonathon" is actually your error.  Should be "Jonathan."

And Josh Painter's last reference to Sarah's surname in his rebuttal is spelled, rather unfortunately, "Pain."

Perhaps both spellings could be fixed?

"As for Cheney's endorsement of Hutchison, Perry said on a local radio station this morning: "I think I’d stick with Sarah,” referring to Sarah Palin, who has backed him. His spokesman was more blunt: "It's not surprising, considering they worked in Washington together for so many years.""

Thanks for posting Josh Painter's post on this, too!

I think CNN and Politico use the same headline writers. Their own headline contradicts their story twice (at least):

"He passed his phone to Bryan English, a spokesman for the group, who initially said their effort to raise money was only to secure a venue, pay for lighting and promote the event.

But then he said he was “not personally aware of a speaker’s fee.”

......

"There is no indication that the former governor has requested a fee or that her decision whether to attend is being influenced by whether she’ll be paid."

Her stance is the pro-choice movement is hijocked by the pro-abortion crowd (I dare say she would love Sarah's Culture of Life Indiana speech) and she believes the gay-lesbian movement is hijacked by individuals wanting to tear the basic culture of America.  ladyd - I would tell them to get the book written by a fellow lesbian Tammy Bruce and understand why she supports Sarah.

People have missed the big story.

Joe Biden speaks next door.  At the same time.

The venue with 16,000 seats was set a while ago. The price is a bargain.

All they need is a speaker to draw a crowd.

Sarah had a busy schedule, but this might be worth it, because of Joe.

If Sarah draws 16,000 across the street from Joe, it will be great book promotion.

If few attend, it will be bad.

A speaker fee is relatively unimportant.

It is very tempting. Will Sarah do it?

If she does, I think it will be a full house and a huge event.

I only have one nit to pick here: Why doesn't Meghan release Sarah's schedule? We know she will be on Oprah, we know she has a big book tour upcoming, we know there are multiple dates and appearances booked ............ so why not let people know when and where she will be? She is set to kick off things in a little over 2 weeks, surely much of her schedule is set. Why not tell folks?

Beehive,  October 29, 2009 5:44 PM

The only thing I can think of is security. Remember when Meg talked about the crowd when she went to the right to life in Indiana? She said it was like they were getting crushed.

Sarah is a private citizen now. She might not have any security people. The events she attends most likely furnish security. But what about airports, hotels etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are threats against Sarah and her family all the time.

Other than security reasons, I would like to at least see her book signing and interview schedule. Maybe Harper Collins has some info on that.

RINO-Hunter,  October 29, 2009 5:59 PM

I agree with Beehive, security is the reason.

Rachael,  October 29, 2009 6:11 PM

Alright, for some reason my last comment didn't go through so let's try this again...

riley,

Have you gotten your information from Governor Palin?

Let's see, here's Meghan Stapleton's statement: "This is one of 1,000 requests for the governor's time," Stapleton said, according to the AP. "This particular invitation arrived late last week. It is under consideration, as so many are, but will be incredibly difficult to attend with her prearranged book tour under way at that point."

So, right. Everything that I said up there? Still stands. TS is pitching in to try to get her to go. Meghan Stapleton indicated that she is not likely to go. Is there something confusing about what I've said? Honey, make sure you know who you're talking to before you start accusing people of "listening to liberal reporters all the time." That's just laughable.

If people want to raise money in hopes that the Governor will attend a certain event, that's their prerogative. But when it doesn't happen, be prepared for stories like this one, because reporters are full of sh*t and will go with whatever angle is provided to them.

AKReport,  October 29, 2009 6:12 PM

juju,  October 29, 2009 7:58 PM

I can't find the post I was on where they were talking about the Tea Parties.  Anyway, I will post this here and please repeat it elsewhere.  I had heard some where that the Tea Parties were having a convention in NashvillE and Sarah Palin was going to be the Key Note Speaker.

I just goggled Nashville Tea Party.  They are having a convention at the Opryland Hotel on Feb. 4th to 6th.  And they are saying Sarah Palin is the Keynote Speaker.  Also, there was some radio or tv person (local) that had announced this on the radio or tv today or yesterday.

HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THIS AND HOW DO WE CONFIRM THIS????

JeanA,  October 29, 2009 8:19 PM

Oh My, short for OMG, if OMG stands for "Oh My God", I don't like to use God's name out of context.

Huskers-For-Palin,  October 29, 2009 11:20 PM

From the gist of it, Laura Ingrahm was implying that Sarah was having a "problem" with conservative groups and was disorganized on her book tour.

Of all of the main radio shows she is the most cold to Sarah.

karenfromny,  October 29, 2009 11:56 PM

Why is it, just because Laura doesn't know the schedule, she assumes it is disorganized.

I think Gov. Palin is very organized and will let you know her schedule when she wants you to know it.
