Newt Gingrich Endorses Doug Hoffman; Updated: Rush Responds to the News in NY-23, Huckabee Jumps on Bandwagon and Endorses Hoffman

Stacy McCain is reporting that Newt just endorsed Doug Hoffman:

Let's call this one a grudging, backhanded endorsement, shall we?

Scozzafava dropping out leaves Hoffman as only anti-tax anti-Pelosi vote in NY-23. Every voter opposed to tax increases support Doug Hoffman.

It's clear that the only reason Gingrich flipped his endorsement is because Scozzafava suspended her campaign and dropped out of the race. He still holds to the delusion that Scozzafava is actually dedicated to lower taxes (she's not) and opposing the Pelosi/Reid/Obama agenda (except where it involves pro-life issues, massive government spending, support for ACORN and big labor, and pork-barrel projects as vote bribes).

Of course, Gingrich could rehabilitate himself with conservatives by hitting the news networks as hard for Hoffman as he did for Scozzafava. The election is Tuesday. Surely Gingrich, who fancies himself a leader of the conservative movement, can spare a bit of shoe leather for Doug. But will he?

Welcome to the party pal. Still no word from Romney. Earlier today, Dede Scozzafava spoke to reporters after her withdrawal from the campaign:

Update by Doug: (H/T Yogi41) Via Kathryn Jean Lopez at National Review:

In response to the NY-23 news, Rush Limbaugh (who will be on Fox News Sunday tomorrow) tells me: “Hmmm... I thought the Era of Reagan was over? Who was it that said that? Oh yeah, the smart people on our side who told us the only way we could win was with moderate/liberal candidates like Scozzafava. Hmmm...”

Readers may recall that Newt Gingrich famously proclaimed the era of Reagan was over last winter. I guess Newt was wrong...again.

Update II by Doug: (H/T Rob Harrison) Stacey McCain is now reporting that Mike Huckabee has finally seen the light:

According to Jonathan Martin of The Politico, Mike Huckabee has endorsed Doug Hoffman, too. Expect others to come in for Hoffman, too (**coughRomneycough**), now that the fence on which they were all precariously perched has disappeared out from underneath them.

Better late than never I guess. Without Governor Palin's courage, impeccable political instincts, and willingness to put principle above party, none of this would be happening. Every other GOP heavyweight, from Tim Pawlenty to Newt Gingrich to Mike Huckabee, is following her lead. Is there anyone left who doubts Governor Palin’s leadership of the conservative resurgence? Exit question: When will Mitt Romney make the decision to follow her lead? Or, will his decision continue to be indecision?

Support Doug Hoffman here.

I think Sarah's FB is under attack.

Barbarians breached the line and when they had totally won the battle, then the elites come over to act like they had something to do with it.

Nancy,  October 31, 2009 3:30 PM

All the updates are wonderful!
Mitt! Hey! Quit doing your hair!

Nancy,  October 31, 2009 3:31 PM

They are slow to the party now! When 2012 rolls around, they'll be fighting each other to get in.

GAHanson,  October 31, 2009 3:36 PM

Yeah, it's been down pretty much for the last couple of days, but people can still sign up, and read her notes, etc., they just can't post things to her wall.  That's really pretty childish of the dems to do that, but you can bet that Facebook would do something about it if the same thing happened to 0bama's page.

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  October 31, 2009 3:39 PM

This proves to be interesting, indeed. Governor Palin is about principle above politics, regardless of what it means to her political future (politically speaking, if I die, I die).

Huckabee and Gingrich are about political expediency above principles as shown with this decision. Either that, or they decided to dress up as true conservatives for Halloween.

Nancy,  October 31, 2009 3:40 PM

I think the elites are going to be playing alot of "Sarah Says", in the future.

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  October 31, 2009 3:40 PM

Unfashionably late.

No mention of Palin in this articel or the other one. She is the reason this all happened & you know it. Oh if Hoffman looses ... Palin will be mentioned God knows how many times.

No mention of Palin iin the Politco updates. She is the reason this all happened & you know it. Oh if Hoffman looses ... Palin will be mentioned God knows how many times.

yogi41,  October 31, 2009 3:50 PM

LOL! You're so right. Silence for now, but IF Hoffman loses, it's all Sarah's fault.

Doug Brady,  October 31, 2009 3:51 PM

I agree except for one thing.  Hoffman isn't going to lose.

Puma.for.Life,  October 31, 2009 3:52 PM

The dnc sent out an email this past week telling people to go to Sarah's Facebook and take it down.

Nancy,  October 31, 2009 3:52 PM

Yes! Funny how that works. It just tells us who they fear.

yogi41,  October 31, 2009 3:52 PM

How cute. John Boehner is twittering about Sarah - at least he's appreciative of her.

"Thanks to Gov Sarah Palin for highlighting my address on GOP #hc solutions: http://is.gd/4JowZ | More here: http://is.gd/4JprW"

GAHanson,  October 31, 2009 3:53 PM

Where's Mitt, I guess he's waiting for polls that show Hoffman ahead by double digits, like he did with McDonnell.  So, Huck finally jumps on the bandwagon, he's another gutless wonder.  Let's face it, Palin had the most to lose by getting in when she did.  It was her endorsement that sent the dems into panic and scramble mode.

Tommy Report,  October 31, 2009 4:04 PM

Actually, I can understand why she wasn't named in the Politico article.  She wasn't a "straggler" and the article is about "stragglers" and late-comers.  She's not interpreted as one of the late-arrivals.

tim c,  October 31, 2009 4:19 PM

Huck comes out after latest polls show hoffman leading, why this is the most courageous move he has made so far, way to go huck.

Lakerfanalways,  October 31, 2009 4:22 PM

Romney is going to wait til AFTER the election to endorse him LOL. As far as Huck is concerned, how nice of him to show up NOW and endorse him. I guess Huck figures its safe now, he can come out and play too

"Splunge, and I'm not gndecisive"

GAHanson,  October 31, 2009 4:32 PM

Both James Carvil and Paul Begala have sent out emails pleading for funds to counter the "Palin effect" and linking it to support for 0bama.  They have, essentially, turned the NY23 race into a battle between 0bama and Palin, a contest to see who has the most power.  Do they really think this is a wise move, what happens when Hoffman wins, will they send out an email declaring the Palin has defeated 0bama?  That would be great if they did, but I have a feeling that they will just remain silent.

LET THE RECORD SHOW:

THE ERA OF NEWT IS OVER!

WE ARE WITNESSING THE USHERING IN OF THE ERA OF:
GOING ROGUE BABY! GOING ROGUE!

Mountain Mama,  October 31, 2009 4:54 PM

Not only is Reagan alive through his spirit in Sarah Palin----

but now other REAL Republicans (no more RINOs!) are going to win, and once in office, start turning this nation back to REAL AMERICAN values.

Thank you, GOD!  GO HOFFMAN (thanks to Sarah!)!

hrh,  October 31, 2009 4:58 PM

I must say that Scozzafava (sp?) gave a really great interview in the clip you have here. Very classy, I thought. It's great when politics can be civil.

toughluck,  October 31, 2009 5:17 PM

Ded said: Release my supporters to whom they may want to represent them????

Geez! She just can't bring herself to say a few simple words: "Vote for Hoffman!"

I guess she is just hoping her supporters will vote for Owens so se can go Nanananana! to Hoffman at the end.

I can't bring myself to like her even after she backed off.

Jamestheelder,  October 31, 2009 5:56 PM

What Sarah has shown is the instinct to lead.  It make no difference if she was caught off guard in not knowing the "Bush doctrine," it's all about being able to use the available facts and common sense to decide on the right course of action, even if the results may not be popular.  I think she has consistently shown this characteristic.  If only we had a commander in chief with that mentality!

NYPalinPower,  October 31, 2009 6:51 PM

Great for Sarah!  She is proving herself a mighty force in the grassroots movement!  Politicians are coming aboard now and are FINALLY coming to their senses and following Sarah and the people, gosh...just like they are hired to do!  YOU GO GIRL!

Recovering Democrat,  October 31, 2009 6:53 PM

LOL ... funny!

Despite the fact that is obviously a joke, it's more true than not. Mitt is afraid of losing political support and he comes across as calculating and wimpy.

Puma.for.Life,  October 31, 2009 7:01 PM

I wish I still had that email, I would post it.  A friend of mine sent it to me; she stays on their mailing list so that we can keep informed on what "the enemy" is up to.  It all is couched around the "Truth Squad" concept.  Since Palin lies, they have to take her down so only the truth can be heard.  I will email my friend an see if she still has it; if so, I will copy it here.

Puma.for.Life,  October 31, 2009 7:14 PM

Sarah has a new posting on Facebook; it's thanking DeDe for quiting.

Puma.for.Life,  October 31, 2009 9:10 PM

ok, here's the email: I forwarded it to the editor here:

A lot of folks use Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family. For Sarah Palin, it's a great way to spread lies about health insurance reform.

A few months back, Palin took to Facebook to declare that health reform would create "death panels," and drive private insurers out of business -- and nonpartisan fact-check sites and the independent Congressional Budget Office debunked those lies.

But that hasn't stopped Sarah Palin. She's back with a new Facebook note claiming that reform will raise costs on families and drive up deficits. Unfortunately for her, even the conservative "Tax Foundation" says those claims are false.

So we're calling out Sarah Palin, and taking to Facebook to debunk her lies on the very same pages she's using to spread them.

Call 'em out: Sarah Palin. Watch the video, make a call, spread the word on Facebook.

We've put together a short Facebook note cataloging just some of Sarah Palin's many distortions and the facts that prove her wrong. But we need your help to "share" the note and make sure she doesn't get away with her outrageous lies.

If Sarah Palin wants to spread lies on Facebook, we'll call her out in the very same place. And when thousands of folks share our note and expose her lies, it will be clear that those who lie about reform will be held accountable -- no matter where they spread their misinformation.

The more we push back with the truth, the more Sarah Palin and others like her will have to think twice before they promote lies, and the less they'll be able to derail progress.

Even if you don't have a Facebook account, you can still help us call out Sarah Palin. Visit Call 'em Out: Sarah Palin to watch our video detailing her lies and to call Palin's political organization and say, "stop lying."

Rising health care costs are crushing American families and squeezing small businesses. Reform will reign in costs and cut the deficit in the long run -- that's why it's so important, and why Sarah Palin's lies are so malicious.

We're not letting it stand. We're calling Sarah Palin out:

http://www.democrats.org/CallOutPalin

Thanks for helping us set the record straight about reform,

Jen

Jen O'Malley Dillon
Executive Director
Democratic National Committee
