Nobel Losers Who Were Just Not Good Enough...

From Ace - who else was up for the Nobel Peace Prize?

Chinese Human Rights Activist Hu Jia - imprisoned for campaigning for human rights in the PRC, not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama.

Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China's communist system. -- not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama. (Not to mention the symbolic value of awarding a Chinese dissident on the 20th Anniversary of the Tianenmen Square Massacre.)

Greg Mortenson, founder of the Central Asia Institute has built nearly 80 schools, especially for girls, in remote areas of northern Pakistan and Afghanistan over the past 15 years - not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama.

Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, a philosophy professor in Jordan who risks his life by advocating interfaith dialogue between Jews and Muslims, also not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama.

Afghan human rights activist Sima Samar. She currently leads the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and serves as the U.N. special envoy to Darfur and is apparently also not as worthy as Barack Hussein Obama.

What do all of the above have in common? Courage, dedication and scars on their back...

What do none of them have? A hot line to George Soros and a crease in their pants sharp enough to excite David Brooks...

It's ridiculous, but by Monday we'll have moved on to HC.It will be a bad joke that keeps on giving.

David,
Thank you for this post.

The whole thing is sickening.

manajordan,  October 9, 2009 9:19 PM

Thanks for this post. It is good to read about some inspirational people. I wish them the best in their continued efforts. I hope when our President said he was humbled that that was actually true.

narciso,  October 9, 2009 9:22 PM

He's not fit to carry their shoes, frankly, this just gets more revolting, Mortensen, in particular, has actually worked to build schools in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Afghani activists

The Brooks line reminds me of the Rutles--the obsession with trousers on the part of their early manager.  Seems apropos in this instance as well.

So...we are akin to, or aligned with, terrorists for thinking this whole thing is like a bad Steve Martin farce, but much, much funnier.

So be it.  I am tired of apologies that don't come from ex-Jihadists and ex-Leftists and child rapists and America-haters.  I will not apologize for America, and it is a great sickness upon the land that those who do are lauded by the EU eunuchs.

Arafat won a Nobel Peace Prize.  That would shut a sane person up, but the Left are not sane.  Hating America is not an indication of well-integrated mental health and a deep political philosophy.

That deep divide in America is becoming clearer and clearer--those who love the Constitution and love America, and the Left (whose loves are of another manner altogether).

Now if we can just avoid being distracted by bright shiny objects like the FairTax and the birther thing and cults of personality (yes, they exist in the conservative movement as well) and Huckster RINO populist distractions, we could win.

"It's the Constitution, stupid!"

Not the multicultural bi-racial campfire song version of a Haircut With A Statist Meme.

We live in a world where "The Onion" news stories are now a reality.

narciso,  October 9, 2009 9:39 PM

The Rutles, yet another strange riff that references reality, particularly the Beatles manager manque, who got up and took a professorship in Australia. Now by cult of personality, you're not referencing us, right

The notices from this morning are like something from "Airplane, 'I picked a bad week to stop . . ." and "Animal House" , "My advice to you to start drinking heavily," also the line right before also fits

OT:...but is anyone a little freaked out by the Palin Bobblehead thingy that keeps bouncing around
as you are posting?

Anonymous,  October 9, 2009 10:36 PM

Well, he was bound to win it at some point in his term, so at least now, we don't have to worry about him winning it again, like say in October 2010 or 2012 when it might have really provided a boost.

Ironic that he goes all out and shows up and campaigns for the Olympics and loses and does nothing for this and wins.  If there's a silver lining it's that if anyone was the most upset today it had to have been Bill Clinton.  You know he wants one of these more than anything and in the past few years he's had to watch Jimmy Carter, Al Gore and now Obama each win one while he gets nothing.  LOL.

Since this is the most recent thread thought I'd post some more book numbers I've found.  Just as a comparison.  Obama's Audacity of Hope came out in Oct 2006.  It sold 67,000 the 1st week, 182,000 the 1st 3 weeks, and 402,000 the first 8 weeks, and around 1,000,000 in its first year.  Bill Clinton's My Life came out in July 2004 and sold 400,000 the 1st day and 1,000,000 the 1st week.  Hillary Clinton's Living History came out in June 2003.  It sold 200,000 the 1st day, 600,000 the 1st week, and 1,200,000 the 1st 6 weeks.

First day sales include not only sales at stores the first day but also all pre-order sales.

And just for fun.  Nancy Pelosi's book came out last summer I believe and sold 2700 copies its 1st week.  John Kerry's came out in October 2003 and sold 2200 copies by the end of the year.  Mitt Romney's book came out in July 2004 and sold 11,000 in 3 years.

gelston,  October 9, 2009 10:38 PM

First, let me thank all of you for some excellent post today.  I'm sure this Nobel Price thing was as troubling for me as it was for everybody else.  Your comments were great.  I have not laughed this hard in ages.  The eternal optimism here is truly refreshing.

I agree that David's post makes the current award even more bizarre.  Every single person that was mentioned was more worthy than the current recipient.

The thought I carried away from today is the realization of how many worthwhile institutions on this Earth have been taken away by the liberals.  In a way, I have to give them credit for their success.  In another way, it makes me feel that I should have done more over the years.  I went to school with people like this in the 60s when I was in Boston.  I saw bayonets and tear gas and riots in the street.  In hindsight, I should've known that they would continue to work to take over a committee like the Nobel Price committee.
We have a lot to do to reestablish conservatism not just with Sarah Palin in the White House but in so many institutions in this country.
God bless all of you today and always.
God bless the USA.
God bless Sarah Palin and her family.

gelston,  October 9, 2009 10:41 PM

Narciso,
The memory of John Belushi walking into the dean's office and finding the dead horse is most like today for me. That is such a great part of Animal House. What to you do to clean up the mess? Just get out your chain saw, I guess.

I have an idea why dont they give  Nobel prize in literature to an author whos yet to write a book or Nobel prize in science to a scientist that did not discover or invent anything.

ALA,  October 9, 2009 11:15 PM

This appeared in an article on sep 02,2008

"One administration critic, Steve Clemons of the New America Foundation, said today that while he personally liked Biegun and viewed him as “extremely competent,” his retention as Palin’s foreign-policy tutor could have unpleasant consequences. Describing Biegun—a Russia expert who once served as staff director for Sen. Jesse Helms at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee—as a “big gun” in conservative foreign-policy circles, Clemens said “he will turn her into an advocate of Cheneyism and Cheney’s view of national-security issues.”

I look forward to Sarah's nobel prize in literature.  Go Cuda!

techno,  October 9, 2009 11:17 PM

I really believe this is a conspiracy orchestrated by George Soros or forced aligned to Soros.

It almost appears that whenever Obama is perceived to be in trouble these folks on the Far Left always seem to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

I think the Olympics was supposed to be that rabbit. When that idea didn't pan out, they went to their contingency plan-the NPP.

Have you noticed there is little coverage now about Obama's fiasco in Copenhagen last week?

narciso,  October 9, 2009 11:25 PM

As opposed to Samantha Power, who wanted??? to partition Iraq and invade Israel to defend the Palestinians, as State's policy chief, or Malley, the Hamas fan, or General Gration, the 'lollypop" Sudan czar, also he's an anti-nuke nut. Panetta who has opened the CIA up to a 'Star Chamber', the pacifists Rhodes and McDonough who have usurped General Jones National Security Council

narciso,  October 9, 2009 11:39 PM

Biegun is from the Helms camp, that's where the hardline conservatives in the policy department honed their skills, Reich and Noriega for Latin America, Bolton for arms control, Ford for East Asia.very few of these are neocons, but they won't be the traditional detente minded RINO apparatchik either, he worked for Frist, but we won't hold that against him, He worked for Ford, the only really successful auto company that didn't take the bailout.

ALA,  October 9, 2009 11:42 PM

I absolutely love Biegun or anybody who was associated with Helms in any shape or form.
No RINOS allowed near Sarah.

Mr. Riddick,
Thank you for posting this. Looking at the list of nominees is mind boggling; I'm so saddened that a prize that the founder(s) intended for worthy persons has been cheapened and turned into a political statement.

At first this was a joke to me... Now I'm pissed.
Those people deserve to be honored. I do believe that at this point, that meaningless hunk of metal is below them.

I hope they receive blessings for their SACRIFICES.

Mountain Mama,  October 10, 2009 1:31 AM

Though it's been completely obvious for decades that the Nobel Peace Prize is often awarded for leftist political reasons, it was nevertheless shocking to learn today that Obama won.

His "victory" over other, FAR more deserving candidates signifies a new, depressingly ominous low point in world history:  image matters more than substance, and people who truly work aren't really honored; instead, they're treated as stupid drones who are valued only for their work, but not as much as others who have "gifts" and "charisma" are treated.

Tell you what:  computers----which already recall information infinitely better than we do----might also someday very possibly conduct themselves with more compassion (albeit initially programmed), and according to truly decent values, than human beings do, as we are becoming increasingly more self-centered (cum the Obamas).

I am thankful on this otherwise sad day that MANY liberals and progressives admitted that Obama didn't deserve this prize, for which he was nominated (according to Rush L.) only 11 days after taking office.  He didn't conduct THAT terrific of a campaign; no peace accords were brokered; the oceans haven't lowered, and war and discord continue still.

Anonymous,  October 10, 2009 1:31 AM

I believe Obama is the 1st winner of the Nobel Peace Prize who is actively in command of armed forces engaged in battle at the time he awarded the prize.  I just checked the list of all 100+ winners and I didn't see one person who was in the process of fighting a vicious war, and in the heat of discussions to escalate said war by adding tens of thousands to fresh troops to intensify the battle.  Kind of defeats the whole purpose of the "peace" prize.  Amazing.

I agree with some of those who have said this is an attempt by the committee to constrain Obama in his future actions.  I mean, it would be difficult for the Nobel Peace winner to really ramp up a war only a few weeks after he wins the prize.  Kind of hard for him to get tough on Iran or think about sanctions or blockades or bombing facilities after he wins the peace prize.

Also, it isn't like the prize is given by some huge body.  It's 5 Norwegians who decide.  I looked up the current group.  There's 5 of them.  2 from the Labor Party(or the Social Democrats), 2 conservatives, and 1 from the Socialist-Left party.  So, 3 of the 5 are from the left wing.  No wonder he won.

From the Nobel website:
The Committee seeks to achieve unanimity in its selection of the Peace Prize Laureate. On the rare occasions when this proves impossible, the selection is decided by a simple majority vote.

There are 3 left wing socialists on the committee out of 5.  It'd be interesting if the final vote tally is ever released.

Nancy,  October 10, 2009 1:39 AM

For all the peace that he has done to garner this peace prize, it seems fitting that he would be awarded what has basically become a bowling league trophy. While the people that have actually done something, are rewarded with genuine gratitude from the people that they have sacrificed to help.
This is a replay of the election.
Senator Obama does nothing and wins.
Governor Palin is the embodiment of the American work ethic, and gets passed over.

gelston,  October 10, 2009 1:53 AM

It is a distinct honor to read your great post, Mountain Mama.

Yeah, but you know what those guys don't have to contend with?

Millions of rrrational creatures like yourself, who stare reality in the face (evolution, climate change, and the colossal failures of the past decade of GOP rule), and deny it.

In spite of your ignorance and stupidity, he has become the first Black president of your nation, and is already inspiring trust around the world. It's going to take a long time to heal the riffs GWB created, and to change the disastrous course of American foreign policy, but it's a start.

Not primarily.  :-)

Anonymous,  October 10, 2009 11:09 AM

I think I understand the logic of this choice.

Part of it is that the Obama foreign policy has exceeded my high expectations to date.  Much of the terrible damage during the last 8 years has been reversed and there is now hope for a better world which replaces the fear that Republicans caused with GWB and Cheney.

Significant first steps have been made in several critical ares; Climate Change, Nuclear limitations, appealing directly to the Iranian people (first reaction did not overthrow the ayatollahs from within, but it came close), recreating alliances.

In democracies, alliances cannot persist for long without the support of the people.  And the public in almost all of our allies (the Marinejegerkommandoen won a US Presidential Unit Citation for their fighting in Afghanistan) had turned strongly against doing anything with the USA by the end of GWB's term.

After 8 years of Republican control (last two with just 49.5 Senators) the USA is no longer strong enough to "go it alone".  We NEED allies, and Obaam has done an incrediably good job in recreating those alliances, while smoothing relatiosn with our potential adversareis of Russia and China.

Best Hopes for 7 more years of foreign policies success,

Alan Drake

You're kidding me, right, he went to Cairo where they do torture with relish (and mustard), under a 28 year state of emergency, and spoke out against 'imposing democracy'. Where Syed Qutb's death throw inspired his brother in teaching in his prize disciple Bin Laden, where all mid level AQ seeming come from. The Russians conduct in
Chechnya, along with the Serbs behavior in Bosnia, where we didn't intervene until was too late, was one of the prime recruiting triggers for AQ in the mid 90s
