Governor Palin: An Advocate for Energy Independence
National Review Online published a very nice piece by Governor Palin this morning. You can read the whole thing here.
Given that we’re spending billions of stimulus dollars to rebuild our highways, it makes sense to think about what we’ll be driving on them. For years to come, most of what we drive will be powered, at least in part, by diesel fuel or gasoline. To fuel that driving, we need access to oil. The less use we make of our own reserves, the more we will have to import, which leads to a number of harmful consequences. That means we need to drill here and drill now.
We rely on petroleum for much more than just powering our vehicles: It is essential in everything from jet fuel to petrochemicals, plastics to fertilizers, pesticides to pharmaceuticals. According to the Energy Information Administration, our total domestic petroleum consumption last year was 19.5 million barrels per day (bpd). Motor gasoline and diesel fuel accounted for less than 13 million bpd of that. Meanwhile, we produced only 4.95 million bpd of domestic crude. In other words, even if we ran all our vehicles on something else (which won’t happen anytime soon), we would still have to depend on imported oil. And we’ll continue that dependence until we develop our own oil resources to their fullest extent.
Those who oppose domestic drilling are motivated primarily by environmental considerations, but many of the countries we’re forced to import from have few if any environmental-protection laws, and those that do exist often go unenforced. In effect, American environmentalists are preventing responsible development here at home while supporting irresponsible development overseas.
[...]
Building an energy-independent America will mean a real economic stimulus. It will mean American jobs that can never be shipped overseas. Think about how much of our trade deficit is fueled by the oil we import — sometimes as much as half of the total. Through this massive transfer of wealth, we lose hundreds of billions of dollars a year that could be invested in our economy. Instead it goes to foreign countries, including some repressive regimes that use it to fund activities that threaten our security.
Reliance on foreign sources of energy weakens America. When a riot breaks out in an OPEC nation, or a developing country talks about nationalizing its oil industry, or a petro-dictator threatens to cut off exports, the probability is great that the price of oil will shoot up. Even in friendly nations, business and financial decisions made for local reasons can destabilize America’s energy market, since the price we pay for foreign oil is subject to rising and falling exchange rates. Decreasing our dependence on foreign sources of energy will reduce the impact of world events on our economy.
Update: A few months old, but still very much true, here's a classic C4P video created by Seth Adam Smith:

She really nailed it. Great op-ed.
There’s no getting around the fact that we still need to “drill, baby, drill!” And if those in D.C. say otherwise, we need to tell them: “Yes, we can!”
Great line. So far no Google Alerts on this op/ed. Wouldn't surprise me if the media will try to bury this one.
Going Rogue update:
#1 in non-fication at Amazon (#3 in ALL books, up from #5 yesterday, drop in price probably responsible)
#10 at B&N (up from #12 just minutes ago. (they have not dropped their price, and an influx of Wimpy Kid books have driven her numbers down.)
#4 at WalMart ($9 a copy, same as Amazon)
#1 at Borders (no drop in their price either)
#1 in non-fiction at Books A Million (no drop in their price either, same rating since day 1)
#2 at Family Christian Stores (full price, no change in rating since day 1)
A real media roll out prior to release will drive sales. A booksigning tour between Nov 17th and 25th, or a longer tour right after Thansgiving and we may just be looking at the need for a 2nd printing.
If the rumor of Gov. Palin's Stand up for our Nation is true I would thinks Energy Independence will be the foundation of the group and all other national issues will splintter off of that. Energy is a basic human need just like shelter, food and cloths. I could see energy indep. going a long way in many different directions leading to other issues and for Gov. Palin that is a good thing.
Can someone post this on FR?
I think this is an important one to get out there today. I agree with Coda. This is her baby. Energy Independence.
It's already posted at Freep. It isn't posted yet at Hot Air though.
God Bless you once again Sarah--and a hearty Thank You! Common sense at It's honorable best is you and your championing for Energy Independence. Im Standing Up For Our Nation with you for common sense solutions as you so knowledgeably express... this is another in a long list of such common sense thoughtful solutions that you alone boldly proclaim time and time again!
Sarah!... your our leader, there is no other like you... period! We look forward to the day when you are our President--Our Commander In Chief!
May God continue Blessing You and Family and hold you in his peace.
Thanks Doug.
I hope Drudge picks it up.
Still waiting for Allahpundit to post her op-ed for a full blog post.
He sure jumped on the gallup nonsense
Allah is a RINO
With Russia, China, Iran, and South America all gearing up in the energy buisness it is just reckless to not use our own resources. It is not the economy stupid, It is energy! But then we all must realize by now that this crushing of our economy by this administration is by design. It is time to stand up and make it clear to these clowns that we will no longer stand silently by and let them destroy our Country!
Fantastic Op-Ed. She really just lays the truth out there, and it is straight common sense. Energy is her bread and butter.
Doug, forgive my cheekiness. She did indeed nail it: including the negative impact of our trade deficits.
Thanks to Sinistar for posting it front and center. Many of us read it and commented on today's open thread earlier.
Amen and amen.
Very well written and on point. I wish she had also mentioned nuclear as an alternative electricity source. I don't know of one new nuclear plant planned since last year, continuing a 35 year effective moratorium.
Governor Palin- the hammer that continues to hit the nail on the head, banging her point in ever so consistently on behalf of America. What exceptional foresight this women possesses. She is always before the curve driving the debate. I'd better adjust my seatbelt. This is going to be some ride.
I will just say it was posted in NRO not know to be the basten(sic) of conservative thought. Gov. Palin is spreading her base with well posted article in publications with "mainstream" Repub's and such.
<span>Great Op-Ed</span>
Sarah is solid and consistent on the issues.
OT--is the yellow banner posting new.
<tt>Rassumsen POLL: Huckabee Leads GOP 2012 Field... Huckabee 29% Romney 24% Palin 18%...no link yet, don't be afraid, patience people. </tt>
I thought Pawlenty was the new Darling of the elites.
It's simple. She has to be seen and heard from, directly. Literally, eyes and ears. People won't wait for ever. That is, if she intends to mount a presidential campaign. I'm increasingly not sure that's the direction she's taking herself. I think she may just want to be strong public voice and advocate for conservative causes, but no more electoral politics.
All things in good time.
As you say the resignation only hurts her in the short term. It all depands what she does between now and 2012. If she's seen as being busy and can get her message out that she did more for the country out of office than in office people wil accept it.
So far she's been pretty busy on health care, energy, cap & Trade, Afghanistan. The book, HK. and that's all in just 3 months.
If Huckabbe goes after her as a quitter all she needs to do is turn around list everything she's done since she left office and finnish off by asking him.. and what have you done Governor?
Great op-ed but I think Sarah Palin should expand on nuclear power more. That has been too largely ignored.
Plus, maybe her book will finally detail her agenda as Governor of Alaska and the fact that she accomplished 95% of it in 2 years. Put that record up against any of the lazy men that are currently touted by the uninformed and irresponsible pudits like allahpundit.
This was a good post. I think that many people still don't fully understand the need for energy independence. She always does a good job of explaning this to those who may not grasp all of the interaction between energy independence, the economy, and foreign relations.
Here's the LOTUS's take on it:
http://bit.ly/4oPTKU
Another great article (and jab to The One) from Sarah!
Speaking of drill, drill, drill, do we have anybody here from North dakota or Montana? I was wondering about the latest news on the Bakken Oil Field. I know there was a lot last year (like maybe has 400 Billion barrels oil) and is in MT, ND and Canada. There were reports last year of a new millionaire a day in ND. I have searched Google several times in recent months, including today, and there seems to be nothing new since early this year. Just wondered if anybody had any better info.
Huckabee, really? Goodness, might as well run McCain again.
Like I said, it's direct and too the point, I think the NOAA 'scientists' coming out against further OCS drilling was probably a prompt to her latest statements. She is charging ahead on
defense, medical ethics, energy maybe that's a little intimidating to some ,Huckabee's like an old shoe right about now, that probably explains that poll.
Groan: The numbers for Huckabee and Romney look even stronger when GOP voters were asked which candidate they would least like to see get the nomination. Pawlenty came on top in that category with 28%. Palin was second at 21% while 20% named Gingrich. Romney and Huckabee were in the single digits with 9% and 8% respectively.
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_2012/gop_2012_huckabee_29_romney_24_palin_18
This is a poll of GOP voters. How close would it match up with a poll of all conservatives? I really don't identify with the GOP these days. I hate to say it, but that party kind of makes me sick.
My 39-year-old brother who has never voted said he would do the unthinkable and actually go vote, just to vote against Palin if she ran ... because, in his brilliant view, "She quit." So, the quitting hurts her among uninformed misogynist not-likely-to-vote types, for sure.
If Huckabee (or anyone else) wants to make hay out of her quitting, she should simply say:
"The American people expect us to actually accomplish a job in office. They expect us to lead, not take up space behind a desk. I stand on my record and what we got done for the people of Alaska. If some choose to see time spent in office as the only thing that matters, then so be it. It would seem judging from our last presidential election results, where a 3 1/2 year senator defeated a 24-year senator that the American people don't see time in office as a deal-maker."
I get the impression that Huckabee is too fat and happy there at FOX to want to give up a job that probably pays as well as the presidency. These numbers will change once 3 or 4 million people read Gov. Palin's book, she goes on a booksigning tour, and she revs up her new organization, which will undoubtely, require a lot of travel and speaking time. Just keep in mind, no one is going to declare their intention of running until, at the ealiest, Feb 2011, 16 months away. As they say, 30 days in politics is an eternity, so we have 16 eternities to live through.
These men could not have survived what Sarah went through the last year. The fact that she still polls 18% of the GOP simply says that most of the GOP has been easily spooked by what Sarah's detractors say about her, not the real Sarah. Huckabee is like an old shoe, as someone said. He'd be the SAFE choice, albeit the WRONG choice. I think the GOP is just believing all the negative hype. When Sarah comes out swinging on her book, her tour and campaigns for conservatives in 2010, look out. Because the GOP is just WAITING for someone to inspire them. And if they think that's Huckabee or Romney, it's like saying you prefer to eat instant potatoes over the real thing.
She is not going to run? what are some of you saying?
Who among the other current potenial canindates is talking about the great need for energy independence producing a new industrial age?
Who is taking about the need to strengthening the dollar?
Who is talking about the Federal Reserve and its mess?
Who is talking about reducing the debt in great details?
Who is Sarah waiting for to do this? no one......She is RUNNING!
Well said.
But it believe we are over worried about the "quitter" issue. Of course now it's still a issue because she never addressed. But this will be the first thing she addresses when she announces her candidacy, it'll be the first question every reporter, journalist will ask her during her first interviews. By the time the campaign gets off it'll no longer be an issue. Gov. Palin knows it will be an issue and if she runs know she will be well prepared to take it on.
my Gosh!!!
Who cares about polls for an election that's 3 years away?
Just wait until Sarah gets herself out there in front of her supporters.
It looks like that wiill start happening after the book is out. She'll start attracting thouands of people and those numbers will go up.
Now, if afte that the poll numbers don't go up....THEN we have something to worry about.
Holey cannoli though, not now.
Don't get your panties in an uproar,...geeeezzz.
Yeah, I think it's the reverse Bradley effect, you know? People want to support Sarah but they're afraid to show it openly, and they've believed all the negative hype that "she can't win" or she's a "catastrophe" ... People are easily swayed by the media. I mean, look who we've got in the White House now!
Pamela Geller has picked up Gov Palins fantastic OP-ED.
http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2009/10/drill-sarah-drill.html
We need to get her OP-ED out to all of the usuals. Tammy, Beck etc.
Energy Independece is the Guv's baby. The MSM will try to bury it today and focus on the negative.
Send it to everyone.

Don't bet on it. With her everything will be an issue.
Pamela Geller has picked up the Guv's excellent OP-ED.
We need to get this out to all of the usual people. Tammy Bruce, Beck, etc.
Energy Independence is the Guv's baby and the MSM will just bury it and focus on the negative.
Please send it to everyone.

Agree that with her not campaigning and out of the limelight some of the negative hype is having an effect. That said has anybody checked Steve Schmidt's record on campaigns? It reminds me of the scene from Forrest Gump where somebody in LT Dan's family had fought and died in every major conflict. Every person Schmidt had worked for had run and loss there campaign. How do these Bozo's keep getting hired?
Don't wait for this to show up on CNNs Ticker that is for sure. They do not post anything she does.
The “Thrilla from Wasilla" will have thousands trying to get into bookstores....I hope she does a signing at the biggest Wal-Mart where ever that is...."How Sweet It Is!"
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="color: black;"><span style=""><span style="">I don't think these polls are that bad because they don't mean anything. I know I keep harping on the fact that hypothetical polls are meaningless this far away, but it's true. Her numbers are lower simply because Huck has a TV show and Mitt, like Chuck Schumer, never misses a chance to be in front of a camera. Gov. Palin, on the other hand, has been out of the spotlight now for quite a while. As soon as she begins touring for her book, these numbers will quickly turn around.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></span>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="color: black;"><span style=" "> </span></span>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="color: black;"><span style=""><span style="">As to the polls, remember Gallup uses "adults" which makes it suspect. I don't personally believe Gallup is trying to cook the books, I just think that the further you get from likely voters, the less accurate any survey is. It's cheaper and easier for Gallup to use adults. Once we get closer to an actual election when these polls actually mean something, they will use either registered or, better yet, likely voters. Gallup also has a track record of characterized by significant volatility. </span></span></span>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="color: black;"><span style=""></span></span>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="color: black;"><span style=""><span style="">(continued)</span></span></span>
(continued from above)
Regarding Rasmussen, he uses likely voters and is, in my opinion, the best pollster out there. But again, this far from an election, hypothetical polls surveying people who aren't even officially running are pointless. I just looked up a few of Rasmussen's polls on who the 2008 Republican nominee would be.
From November 2005, (close to where we are now in terms of 2012)
Rudy (26%), Condi (24%), McCain (21%), Newt (7%), Bill Frist (5%)
http://legacy.rasmussenreports.com/2005/Republicans%202008.htm
From November 2006
Rudy(24%), Condi (18%), McCain (17%), Mitt (9%)
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/top_stories/poll_giuliani_leads_mccain_for_gop_nomination
From March 2007
Rudy (37%), McCain (16%), Romney (10%)
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/2008_republican_presidential_primary4
Note: McCain, the eventual winner, was 21% down to Rudy as late the spring of 2007. Huck, who basically came in second, isn't even polled. Rudy lead the whole way and flamed out in spectacular fashion at the last minute. Condi didn't even run. My point: none of these polls means anything right now!
Second printing (or more) has been my prayer since announcement. More employment for loggers, paper mill workers, printers, distributors, retailers, shippers, bookstore clerks... and good for Sarah and her publisher, too.
Now Rasmussen polls are good, but three years out. Hell
Three years is a life time, hell three years ago how many of us heard of
B.H.Obama.
RD - well said.
The bit about someone who has never even voted criticizing Sarah (of all people) for resigning as governor under the circumstances is...well...some weird kind of "priceless."
Here's are the results from two focus groups from Greenberg and Carville (so note the clear bias and narrative they are trying to sell):
http://gqrr.com/articles/2398/5488_TheVerySeparateWorldofConservativeRepublicans101609.pdf
What the focus group of conservative Republicans said about Palin:
<span style="">
<p>Asked what their party needs to reinvigorate itself and close the gap between its leaders and its rank and file, these conservative Republicans are almost unanimous in their solution –new leadership. And although they expressed some hope for a variety of names (Gingrich,Romney, Huckabee, Jindal), there was only one figure who truly excited them and created real passion – Sarah Palin. They see in her the uncompromising personal conviction and integrity that they admired in Bush, but with an authentic conservatism that reflects her personal background.
</span>
<span style="">
<p>They very specifically point out her record of taking on corruption in both parties as part of what excites them about her and makes her a unique figure to reinvigorate a moribund and complacent party.
<span style="">
<p>They disagree on her viability as a candidate for national office, but they do not disagree on her ability to lead. Some say she needs to get more experience or take on responsibilities that will burnish her credentials and reassure uncertain swing voters while others maintain she has nothing to prove and is already more experienced and qualified than the current incumbent.
<span style=" "><span style=" ">
<p>What the focus group of white, non-college weak partisans or independents – defined as selfidentifying ‘weak’ Democrats or Republicans, Democratic- or Republican-leaning independents, and non-partisan independents said about Palin:
</span></span>
<span style="">
<p>When it comes to Sarah Palin, there was almost universal agreement that she could never be elected president, with most citing her inexperience and baggage as obstacles too great to overcome. But even more important to them, most felt she was ultimately driven by greed and ambition more than anything else and would rather use her newfound fame to enrich herself than improve the country.
</span>
</span>
</span>
Yeah, my brother is priceless, C.O. He accidentally gave his dog heat stroke while he was walking her from inside his truck. :-)
Wait a minute! Missouri is not far from Kansas. I wonder if I can get tickets? Beehive, you're welcome to crash at our place on the way out! :-)
What is this?
Sorry, the second group has the wrong candidate, his name is Barack Obama, he is seizing industries left and right, is in the pay of the powerbrokers, and the bankers. Everything about him is I, never we, or us,
Good read Tommy. Remember Obama owned the base first then went to the other voters. The base is huge in all the caucus States. They are the ones that stay the entire time. This is where Obama beat Clinton. It is also good that they believe she is oonly doing it for money as the reason not to like her. If she runs then their main theory is gone. What we need to do is find these conservative areas and promote her when she runs. 40 percent of the voters are conservatives. Own that vote and all you have to do is get about 35% of the moderates for a win and 45% for a landslide.
Going Rogue back at number 1 on amazon
First let me post the numbers again for my own benefit:
Huckabee 29%
Romney 24%
Palin 18%
Gingrich 14%
Pawlenty 4%
Other 6%
Undecided 7%
FAVORABILITY AMONG REPUBLICANS
F
HUCKABEE 78
ROMNEY 78
PALIN 75
GINGRICH 69
PAWLENTY 45
NB: HUCKABEE LEADS AMONG FREQUENT CHURCHGOERS AND HUCKABEE IS FIRST AMONG EVANGELICALS WITH PALIN SECOND AND ROMNEY A DISTANT THIRD.
750 LIKELY GOP PRIMARY VOTERS
COMMENT:
1) I have maintained for the last 3 months that one of Huckabee, Romney or Palin would gain the GOP nomination in 2012.
2) I take Mike Huckabee very seriously and do not underestimate his ability to stay in the fray right up to the primary vote in January 2012 if he runs which is more likely if polls consistently over time show him to be the frontrunner.
3) The one number in this poll that is quite shocking, yes shocking is that Romney in this poll has found favor with 78% of Republicans.
Let me point out that PPP in 3 separate polls in July, August and September founds Romney's favorables with Republicans at 54, 52 and 50 respectively.
4) Romney also has not licked his problem with evanglicals (the majority located in the Deep South) that persisted in 2008. It is a problem for Romney that apparently will not go away.
5) Now to Sarah Palin: she is still a first-tier candidate. As the PPP polls have consistently shown there is a huge gap between her favorables among Republicans and conservative Republicans and independent leaning conservatives and Republicans and the commitment to vote for her. I will call this a 'LEGITIMACY" gap. What this gap means is that many folks like Sarah and what she says but still need "proof" that Sarah can lead the GOP and has "the right stuff" to be POTUS. The jury is still out and will be out IMHO until after the 2010 midterms. But I can see Sarah making gradual or incremental progress here after her book comes out and is persued by skeptics and fence-sitters and after she begins to make constant appearances on the 'rubber-chicken circuit" and gains more credibility through more active fundraising for the party and herself. Sarah should be a solid second place in GOP rankings by this time next year, if not the frontrunner.
Good read TommyReport ....First 3/4 interesting, Last 1/4 real interesting.
Suggest you bring article to light for C4P readers.
sarah rocks 2012
Agree this article needs to be a read for C4Pers. We have our work cut out but Sarah can do a lot of it herself. The myth she is just doing it for the money evaporates when she throws her hat in the ring.
Now here is where some people with National experience or campaigning at least can help. How do you hit those key areas, markets. There are ways of giving the same message but change delievery can be important. This is not the Obama saying one thing in Penn and another in Cali but saying the same thing in both places but delivering it differently.
Right now I fear I am not really helping like I can/should. Sure there have been a couple that I have got to consider but the tough fight and getting the moderates to see in her what we all see is the key. This has to be done without leaving principles but delivering the message for them is key. Any suggestions?
The only reason Palin's poll numbers are down a bit is because she has been virtually invisible for the last 3 months, no doubt, by design. I am sure she was told that she was at risk of becoming overexposed and needed to dial back a bit.
Wait until Nov 17....
Alaskans, Todd will be appearing at this event tomorrow:
http://www.oxygenandoctane.com/
No idea why that double posted 1 second apart.
Guess what book is back to being number 1 at amazon? It is by Sarah somebody.
Alaskans, Todd will appear at this show tomorrow:
http://www.oxygenandoctane.com/
I don't know. I'm not even sure Huckabee is serious about running again. You don't trash Sarah if you seriously want to be the nominee, you'd still need her supporters should she decide not to run.
I agree about the hair. Though she looks gorgeous in any hair style, the up do gives her more gravitas. Which is why I was puzzled by the choice of hair style in the Gibson interview. It was her first serious interview to convince people that she's presidential and she looked way too young.
If Governor Palin's largest obstacle with the so-called Independents is the perception that she is driven by greed and ambition over everything else, this can easily be changed prior to her book roll out.
HOLD HER FIRST TV INTERVIEW PRIOR TO BOOK ROLLOUT with O'Reilly, Hannity, or Greta:
Announce on National Television that a % of her earnings generated during the promotion of her new book will be donated to charity. Similar to a promotion like "Sarah Gives Back": It would be nice to see the following money sent to:
1) Military Families who have lost loved ones in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
2) Holiday Gift Packages for Military personnel serving our country overseas.
3) Food for the Homeless Shelters during the Holiday Season.
And some of Governor Palin's personal choices.
Just my two cents.
My favorite interview is still the one with Glenn Beck before she was chosen as VP. She was so natural, not overly folksy, very friendly yet serious enough. Something about her demeanor in that interview that I find very attractive and mesmerizing.
It's the $9 deal that did it. LOL. Good, more people will get to read it. I hope the book outsells Bill, Hillary and Obama's combined by the end of the year.
Will she get less royalties with the lower price? Well, I guess the more number of books sold is more important than money at this point.
the truth is more important then money.
There isn't a bookstore or even a Walmart big enough to accommodate the crowds, I don't believe. I still say stadium or arena. I just don't see how she can actually sign them all on the spot.
Hey, maybe she plans to pre-sign thousands of copies as soon as they print! Wouldn't put it past a lady of her heart and dedication.
Signing books while strategizing with Todd and others; reading, researching; checking BlackBerry messages; type, type, sending op-eds and FB posts; reviewing Piper's homework; and playing with Trigg. In between runs.
She can do it all.
expect sarah's numbers to skyrocket after her book tour.
I thnik the way this book thing works is similar to most other retail sales. Manufaacturer sells to distributer or end seller. This is that MSRP, but retailer can adjust sales price based on how they want to discount. So, I think makes little or no difference to author and publisher if discounts get fierce. Reailers can do this for basically two reasons.
1. Most all retail items have a markup of varying degrees.
2. They may drop price with small profit margin to gain market share (I think that is what Walmart is doing), or make it a "loss leader" to attract other sales while on line or at the store - MARKETING.
From AP:
Taking a page from its original playbook, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. launched a full-fledged price war with Amazon.com Inc. and a nation of book retailers, lowering online prices on certain highly anticipated hardback titles to $9.
The volley of discounts, which began Thursday when the retailer listed prices for some upcoming hardcover releases such as Dean Koontz' "Breathless" and Stephen King's "Under the Dome" at $10, was answered with a similar price cut by Amazon, the largest online bookseller. Then the two competitors lowered the prices even further to $9.
The book discounts, the latest in a series of aggressive online maneuvers by the world's largest retailer, could position the company to do to the online marketplace what Walmart stores did to local merchants decades ago.
"While it's the largest retailer in the United States, it's not the dominant online retailer in the United States," said Albert Greco, professor of marketing at New York City's Fordham University. "And this appears to be an attempt to increase its position in the online space."
The price war also is foreboding news to the large chain bookstores Borders Group Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc., which have been squeezed by Amazon.com's discounting and a decline in their music business.
In the past seven weeks, Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart has racheted up the competition in several retail arenas, beginning with an Amazon.com-like announcement in late August that it would allow outside retailers to sell nearly 1 million items - from baby products to sports memorabilia - through its Walmart.com site.
Next came news that the low-price specialist would fill 90-day supplies of some 300 generic prescriptions by mail for as little as $10 and was launching its own cell phone plan.
And just this week, the company said it would begin selling health and beauty products online.
But it was the announcement about books - the base from which Seattle-based Amazon.com built itself into a powerhouse - that created the biggest stir.
The discounts, which also include Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue" and John Grisham's "Ford County," are a cut of 60 percent or more from cover prices, which means the two competitors are likely selling the titles at a loss.
Hardcover releases, which typically have a suggested retail price of at least $25, are generally sold to merchants with a wholesale price that's a 47 percent discount.
That means Grisham's book, priced at $24, costs most retailers about $12.72. It's not clear whether Wal-Mart, which some experts say sells as many as 1,400 titles in stores, might have negotiated a better price than that.
The company said the $9 prices won't be available in stores.
I don't care if Walmart or Amazon lose money on Palin's book - the lower the price, the more copies fly out the door.
Part of me wants to say, well...if most of my countrymen are so blind and ignorant as to believe that Sarah Palin "was ultimately driven by greed and ambition more than anything else and would rather use her newfound fame to enrich herself than improve the country," then there is indeed no hope for this country, and perhaps deservedly so.
BUT...I recognize that those impressions are superficial with many people and can easily be overcome by someone like Sarah...perhaps only by someone like Sarah.
So I remain focused on the coming sunrise and brush off polls and focus groups that are, at this point in time, rather meaningless if not also contrived.
Figures don't lie, but liars figure.
I think this also disappears when she actually runs. It would show it is to make herself viable as a candidate.
Agree Johndoe - Sarah was paid an advance. After that it is probably based on a print of more books.
I read the post on the Greenberg/Carville focus group that Tommy linked to. The last line of the post, addressing the impressions of her held by indie's and "weak" Dems & GOPers, hit me like a thunderbolt.
"But even more important to them, most felt she was ultimately driven by greed and ambition more than anything else and would rather use her newfound fame to enrich herself than improve the country. "
Where the HELL did that come from? I can see the other comments about her being inexperienced or having "baggage that could not be overcome." But GREED? From what, writing a book? Come on. I noticed that Greenberg & Carville had a great deal of detail about how conservatives felt about her, but that they only briefly summarized what the non-conservatives "said." And, yes, I put "said" in quotes because I have real suspicion that the two partisan Dems who ran this focus group greatly exaggerated the comments made in order to make her look really bad.
Too easy to stack the deck on focus groups. Who held the group Carville? I never get invited to these focus groups.
It must be repeated: Sarah's op-ed today is absolutely magnificent.
Sarah is absolutely magnificent.
I don't think they stacked the deck -- I think they are cooking the books by taking more innocuous comments that might have been made and twisting them by summarizing them the way they did.
Let's try this again. It double posted, then double deleted.
It must be repeated: Sarah's op-ed today is absolutely magnificent.
Have you forgotten what Levi "Judas" Johnston said in the Vanity Fair article about Sarah deciding that she had enough with politics and that now she wanted to "go for the money" or words to that effect.
If there is one major crticism I have with posters at C4P you do not take the Levi Johnston issue seriously enough and you dismiss his condemnatory commentary on Sarah as puerile and the misguided thoughts of a unsophisticated teen age father and fail to realize that George Soros and a gang of billionaires are behind everything Levi says and does.
Not for one minute do I underestimate the ability of Levi Johnston to undermine Sarah Palin in the short term. Will he be successful in the long term? I frankly don't know But I hope to hell he isn't.
SoxFan - I had a similar reaction, recorded it under TR's post a few minutes ago. Unbelievable.
Thanks very much charter, always enjoy your thoughts too... we are in for lots of Sarah-to-come.
Great points
No, he won't be successful in the long run. But the thrust of your argument is well taken. I find the notion incredible that many would be that cynical about Sarah's motivations, but then I've paid attention to what she has done and said. Many haven't. And I have eyes to see and ears to hear. Many don't.
Yeah! some will continue to say (Anderson Cooper)... what was that?... Alaska has no electrical hook-ups! How did Sarah ever see to do that point guard pass off thing?
"not viable for national office"....but yet agree on her "ability to lead"..huh?
Talking out of both sides of their mouths.
Same ol' "needs more experience" bull. She has more experience than Obama's ever had. I'm so sick of that lame arguement.
"driven by greed and ambition".....we ARE talking about Sarah Palin here right?
boy oh boy...they sure don't know their competition do they?
Wait a minute...
My neice just graduated from there this past spring and still lives there...
hmmmm time for a visit i'd say...:-)
It's faked. The greed meme was an early dem attack.
Charter, great stuff!.. funny! and factually correct!
Charter...Amen, Amen, seems I read this same thing today
People,
Regarding the focus group and comments by mod dems that Sarah is greedy. That is complete BS. The focus group was co-held by Carville. He has been trying to push the greed meme on Palin for some months.
Ignore it.
i do not expect that Google will do an alert on this. they did not honour sept 11 with the google name transformation.
i do not like google at all/
i agree!!!!
I don't much care for Google Alerts either, it tends to pick up all the anti-Palin blogs and stories, but C4P is frequently picked up by them as well. I do find it useful in finding some good stuff from among the trash.
GAHanson,
Regarding the Rasmussen poll, I've copied in the numbers from Techno's earlier post.<span>
Huckabee 29%
Romney 24%
Palin 18%
Gingrich 14%
Pawlenty 4%
Other 6%
Undecided 7%
FAVORABILITY AMONG REPUBLICANS
F
HUCKABEE 78
ROMNEY 78
PALIN 75
GINGRICH 69
PAWLENTY 45
NB: HUCKABEE LEADS AMONG FREQUENT CHURCHGOERS AND HUCKABEE IS FIRST AMONG EVANGELICALS WITH PALIN SECOND AND ROMNEY A DISTANT THIRD.
750 LIKELY GOP PRIMARY VOTERS </span>
Conclusions:
1) The top-tier is still Huckabee, Romney and Palin. I do not believe that Newt will run. I believe Pawlenty will run as a long-shot and to be in the mix for a possible veep spot. I believe Sarah will get more of the Newt vote than the other two in the event Newt does not run. The big question here is will Huckabee run despite him not braking away from the 29% Evangelical base. If he does not run, most of those voters are voting for Palin, no doubt.
2) These three are all at 75% favorable or better. I means that for the most part, that 3 out of 4 would be happy if any of them win. This is good for Sarah. Clearly she is top-tier.
3) When looking at Huckabee's 29% it is his normal Evangelical core of primarily social conservatives. It does not have much upside.
4) When looking at Romney's 24% it is his normal eastern, moderates, and establishment GOP core. He can only go up higher if the Pawlenty people go to him if Tim does not run, or Sarah does not run and she sends him part of her votes.
5) Sarah's 18% is loyal. I do not expect this to drop at all. Add in some Gingrich voters to her total given that Newt and Sarah are the only true or close to true conservatives over more than one group of issues.
6) The 'other' category is Ron Paul supporters. That will not go higher than 6% but it is fanatical. Sarah will get that vote because her views are easily the closest to Paulists on the Constitution and the Economy/Budget, despite Sarah being more hawkish than the more isolationist Paulist.
7) The 'undecided' 7% are waiting to see if others throw in their hat like Petraeus or they really can't make up their minds yet. Momentum voters? Maybe.
8) Basically, assuming Gingrich does not run, it is a three-way race with Pawlenty taking votes away possibly from Mitt.
9) Biggest KEY FACTOR at this point: Will Huckabee run? If he does not, Sarah will pick up the vast number of his votes because she is an Evangelical Christian. She is a shoo-in if this happens, although her campaign will need to fight fiercely to give the appearance of weight and power. If Huckabee is truly a selfless man, he will throw in with Sarah and maybe get a cabinet post so that Obama can be defeated. In fact, at some point, if Sarah wanted to, she could cut a deal with Huckabee to offer him one of the cabinet posts that plays to his strengths. I don't think two Evangelicals is good for the ticket and he would not be a good Veep choice. Huckabee will not be able to defeat Obama because he is too weak outside the South and Evangelical Christians, whereas Sarah appeals to a wide range of voters and her only weakness is simply convincing indies/mods that she is ready.
10) If Huckabee runs, and Gingrich does not, it will be a four-way race if Pawlenty does. Sarah will need to put on a monstrous show at the Iowa caucas to win there. Her people will need to overwhelm it and win. If she can pull that off, it will send the message to Huckabee that it may not be in his interest to continue. Keep an eye on Huckabee's fundraising and his activities to see if he still is in it.
11) I BELIEVE THE KEY TO SARAH WINNING THE GOP PRIMARY IS KEEP DOING WHAT SHE IS DOING TO BUILD MOMENTUM SO THAT HUCKABEE SEES THE LIGHT AND DECIDES TO NOT RUN AT ALL. WITH HIM NOT RUNNING (OR PROMISED A CABINET POST), SARAH WILL ANNIHILATE ROMNEY AND SEND THE OUTSIDER, REFORMIST, GRASSROOTS, LIMITED GOVERNMENT REAGANITE CANDIDATE TO THE GENERAL ELECTION.
12) If Huckabee DOES run, and wins Iowa, that would hamper Sarah's ability to get momentum. She would have to grab it then in South Carolina and then really mop up on the early western states, a sort of backup plan to go into Super Tuesday strong. If Huck runs, she can do it still, but it will be somewhat tougher. I personally believe she will win even if Huckabee runs because by the Iowa caucus, the Palination will be a fierce, large, focused organization and Sarah will be in the ZONE campaigning for months before then. When she gets out there more and helps in 2010, I believe we will see gradual improvement in her numbers.
Suggestion: Buy the low-priced books at Wal-Mart / Amazon, etc. and give them as gifts to people who are unsure or don't know much about the real Sarah. We all need to become her apologists and diplomats with everyone we talk to. DO NOT WASTE TIME ARGUING WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE CLEARLY THE 40% THAT WILL NEVER VOTE FOR HER.
13) Romney would LOVE to have both Huckabee and Palin run to split the Evangelical and Social Conservative vote. This I believe is the only way he can pull it off.
When "Stand Up For Our Nation" gets going, her motives will be clear, I'm not worried about Levi and his lies. I believe the truth will win out in the end. And, if Sarah is serious about being taken seriously, she'll do what's necessary to set the record straight. I trust her judgment and instincts on how to deal with the smears and misconceptions. She's just getting started.
I just joyfully pre-ordered 3 more copies of 'Going Rogue' from Amazon at $9 each.
The Liberal-Left and their Marxist-pansies in the White House are in for a rude awakening starting Nov 17th.
Their worse nightmare will be seeing Sarah Palin show-cased in every bookstore in America. Ha!
*And rumor has it that Billy Ayers will be coming out of retirement to ghost-write another fictionalized "Dreams Of My Father:Part II" for his 'pal' Barauk to counter 'Going Rogue'.
Since we're talking about the Palin numbers.
The Palin positive numbers are made of fans like us.
The negative numbers are media creations.
Huck gets good numbers... he's a media figure.
Most GOP types are not Palin watchers like we are.
What do they know about her Evansville speech? Katie Couric never asked: What was it like to be the youngest only woman gov of AK. What was it like to find out you were pregnant? Having a downs child? Keeping the pregnency from the press in AK? Then going on the road as VP with an infant. She was never asked that. Katie didn't want to humanize her.
Must GOP types are not C4P of TS watchers. Outside of her as VP candidate and convention speech what do they really know of her? Did they see her live at a McCain/Palin rally? Did they have such access? Most states didn't. They "heard" about it but never "saw" it.
Schultz... McCain's guy... who completely underused Palin in the McCain campaign (because he was afraid she was out shinning the top of the ticket) recently said that she had not done one thing to reach out to independant voters (CYA). When was she supposed to do that? During the McCain campaign with Schultz's mussel on her face? While she was back as gov in partisan AK? After she resigned while she was putting a 400 page book together that only took 2.5 months to write? On her trip to HK? Gee Schultz when was she supposed to make you happy?
I guess we can't expect the world to see Sarah the way we do till she's able to get back to talking directly to the people again. I for one thank God for Facebook and C4P! I might feel as hopeless as the rest of the GOP!
What I really wanted to comment on was the energy artical.
I'm a woman engineer (BSEE) in the Electronic Power Supply business.
Electronic energy and efficiency is the family business.
Recently while talking to my father-in-law (Masters in Electrical Engineering) about alternative energy and its value I said... "It all boils down to "BTU's by the buck Al".
At that moment he knew that I had ended the discussion.
No matter what the source of energy... it all boils down to how far you can travel for the cost. It doesn't matter whether you're talking about Natural Gas, Oil, Solar, Wind, Coal, Coke, Nuclear, Wood or beacon grease. In this economy we simply can not afford "alternative energy welfare". We have to function as efficienty as possible and get as many Americans to work as possible. When Palin mentioned our dependence on foreign sources of oil and its connection to the trade deficit she nailed it. Once again she's smarter than me. She sees the "BTU's for the buck". She also sees national security and jobs tied in.
She has instincts of how the system works and that really impresses me. That's why I'm one of the 18% who support her and I won't be budging!
