Palin, Oprah and the politics of personality

Gov. Palin is going to appear on “Oprah” in an effort to tout the already-best-selling Going Rogue on Nov. 16. This, needless to say, has caused some consternation throughout the free world, although it’s provided much satisfaction to know that only Gov. Palin would have to take a slight step downward in order to appear on Oprah’s couch.

As I’m not an Opraholic, before anything, I think we should get at sampling of the Oprahsphere regarding this announcement:

“Oprah you have hit a new low. Allowing Palin airtime on the most popular daytime show the day before her book is released is irresponsible on your part. You know better than this. You are very aware of energy and the collective consciousness. Can you honestly say to yourself that allowing Palin a platform to promote her book is sending positive energy into the universe? Having her on your show will send her book sales through the roof and legitimize her ignorance. Your show used to be about spirituality and upliftment [sic]. Now I have noticed that your topics are becoming more and more sensational. Shame on you... I'm hoping you at least ask hardcore questions which will expose her ignorance. I'm hoping that is your purpose for having on the show. Otherwise, you are simply contributing and spreading low energy into the universe...”

Another had this to offer:

“As others have stated, this will only give Sarah Palin fuel for her negativity. I do believe in listening to both sides, but I believe Sarah had her day when she ran for VP. She is a very strange woman, who isn't qualified for political office. There are many other people who deserve the air time and the money so much more than she does.”

This, obviously, wasn’t a scientific sample. I went to Oprah’s site, clicked on the Sarah Palin link, was ushered into the message board specific to “Sarah Palin,” and these – among others – were on the latest front page. If it helps, I can assure you I was generous in choosing the samples.

There are, I dunno, about eleventy-billion comments on Oprah’s official message boards regarding the fact that one successful, iconic female allowing another successful, iconic female onto her stage in order to ask her questions in front of a previously-taped, live studio audience. The major qualm seems to be that Oprah fans seem to be incensed that Oprah may host a woman who is not a victim, dupe or foil. If you’re looking for a pity party, fair to say Gov. Palin’s not the guest you have in mind. We can assume one rider or another ensured no Olympics jokes will be fair game.

So, is Gov. Palin’s choice to give the most famous backer of Pres. Obama the first interview before Going Rogue is released a wise one, all things considered? Let us brush aside the easy answer – of course it is! I’m not alone when I say I’ll watch the show for the first time in, well, ages, and Gov. Palin has a book to sell, and Oprah Winfrey sells a lot of books. Only a fool would think Oprah would be hostile to Gov. Palin, and if Gov. Palin is the near future of conservatism that so many like me believe, then she should be able to navigate whatever Oprah throws her way. The odd couple need not enter BFF status, but Oprah – more than any person on the planet – will be able to humanize Gov. Palin to people predisposed to dislike her.

As a thirtysomething bachelor, I’m not the type of fella who is in what experts call Oprah’s “target market.” Frankly, the last time I watched her show was in the 1990s during one of those Christmas escapades where she Gives Everyone A Bunch of Stuff. When the first commenter quoted discusses “upliftment” I admit it, I giggled like a schoolgirl. It’s no “strategery,” but it’s darn close, but again, these are message board comments. When the aforementioned second commenter dogs on Gov. Palin’s “negativity,” my interest it piqued that she wants Oprah – yes , Oprah – to ask “hardcore” questions of Gov. Palin.

Perhaps O will dig into which energy drink Gov. Palin finds more extreme. I would happily encourage this: Oprah, ask hardcore questions! Hardcore answers will follow; better yet, grab a script of your questions to Barack and Michelle, and apply them to your interview with Gov. Palin – it’s a win-win.

Sprouting cherub’s wings and lifting above the fray, though, I must pointedly say that if the women who adore and/or worship Oprah Winfrey are not people who would find Gov. Palin as quite the role-model, I’m not exactly sure what’s going on over there at Harpo Studios. She is spiritual and religious, she has a family, she is a working woman, and goodness, if ever there’s been a woman whose been told to know her place, it’s Gov. Palin. Every Second Wave feminist outside of Camille Paglia has echoed Eric Cartman, telling her to shut up and make babies.

Flatly, without emotion, if Gov. Palin wasn’t the chemo for the cancer that is Pres. Obama, most of Oprah’s audience would take up live ammunition to defend her. If these women – and excepting the various shrub-men who pepper Oprah’s audience, it’s all women all the time – cannot find anything admirable about Gov. Palin, then my future is obviously meant to carry a sandwich-board up and down a major city’s sidewalks reading “The End Is Near!”

For some time I’ve thought the automatons filling seats in Oprah’s audience are more like The O’s Disciples, yet confronted by the likes of Gov. Palin, I’m confident that more than a few Saul of Tarsus moments may be in the offing. Fair’s fair and the world turns color-blind, Sarah Palin is the embodiment of what The Big O has been preaching the last two decades.

Oprah, the name so big five letters don’t seem to do her justice, just got The Big Get. Conspiracies are already ricocheting around the ‘sphere regarding who is doing whom a favor. This should be a three-night primetime special, because if ever there was a case of worlds colliding it is the ‘Cuda and the Oprah. Not – to be clear – for the sake of antagonism, just for the sake that, if one were to take the complete fascination with Oprah and Gov. Palin and group it together, I’m guessing 82 percent of voting women would have a positive opinion of one or the other, if not both.
What is perplexing is the sheer hatred directed at Gov. Palin by so many in the Oprahverse. Sure, I get it. It’s the same degree of admiration that draws so many to her as pushes so many more away – abortion, Christianity, guns, etc., reflexive reactions to a woman most people know via caricature. In the best way, though, Gov. Palin is going to put herself out to her harshest everyday critics: women who get their news from Oprah, “The View,” and, I dunno, horoscopes or something.

Sure, that’s condescending, but it’s meant to be. I can accept disagreeing with the Governor on any number of issues, but calling her names and discounting her relevance? That’s just silly. For Palin fans (obviously I’m a big one) it’s a great opportunity to see how she handles a host that wont’ be hostile but will be firm, while having the chance to win over a crowd which previously only knew her from a comedienne impersonating her on a sketch comedy show.

Win-win.

Case well made!

I read some of the comments of their, some were really sickening. You picked up the “nice” ones.

Thanks!

The women watching Oprah could stand to hear a little about Sarah from someone besides Tina Fey and the New York Times.  The biggest obstacle for Sarah is the misperceptions about her and what better place to try and clarify the myths then by walking into the enemy camp and chatting with them on the couch.

It will get huge coverage and maybe a few people will learn something about her that they didn't know.

And, oh by the way, it advertises her book too ;)

defendAmerica,  October 20, 2009 11:17 PM

Can we get a running list of you eligible bachelor's here on C4P??!!!!??

Cubachi,  October 20, 2009 11:27 PM

Sarah should breeze by this interview. Consider her previous interviews with Matt Lauer and Wolf Blitzer. She dominated, and even scared Matt Lauer a bit calling him "naive". When she went fishing with Todd and Piper, she told Andrea Mitchell "You're not listening." So Sarah can hold her own.

terri,  October 20, 2009 11:34 PM

well,..

That's if they watch it

Hey Piasano,  October 20, 2009 11:38 PM

As I have stated before Sarah Palin's strategy since her resignation has been masterful. She takes FaceBook to new levels of communication. She goes to Hong Kong and gives this administration a lesson in dealing with the Chinese. She writes a 437 page book in less time then most authors formulate an outline . She goes to # 1 within hours of a Title and release date. She now goes to launch her book tour on Oprah's stage with the confidence of someone that has seen the future.

Sarah Palin is on a mission that no one will be able to stop. This campaign will make the political strategist and the inside the beltway elites scratch there heads and then there mouths will dropped because she is doing it her way. Her confidence is that she has no fear of losing for she knows that she won't.

Something that people need to remember is this comment that the producer of Saturday Night Live first meet Sarah Palin  " This was the most confident woman I have ever meet ". This says it all. We just need to enjoy the ride for the next three years.

defendAmerica,  October 20, 2009 11:39 PM

Did I really write "misperceptions"?  Is that even a word??!  How bout misconceptions ;)

I think everyone will be watching it out of sheer curiosity and then the news will be full of sound bites for the rest of the evening.  Everyone will be analyzing what happened and what was said.

Lakerfanalways,  October 20, 2009 11:41 PM

The idiots that posted those disgusting comments are your typical Obama loving freaks. The ones that stand outside of Detroit waiting for their "obama money" those are the ones that Sarah will NEVER convince because they don't want to be convinced. Ya know, its hilarious how liberals think, they are all about people speaking their mind, wait, as long as they speak their mind saying stuff THEY agree with. As soon as someone says something they disagree with, they must be destroyed or they are not allowed to speak. that is the liberal mindset. Sarah will do great in this interview. The ones that are too thick headed to watch Sarah and actually LEARN something about her, well, I feel sorry for them because they will lead pretty meaningless lives, being so bitter and angry. I have talked to some people who don't agree with Sarah on political issues, but respect her as a human being. Anyone that can't respect her as a human being, I pity them. I am not concerned about Oprah, Oprah will treat Sarah with respect, its the idiots in the audience I am most concerned with

AmeriCuda,  October 20, 2009 11:50 PM

'Obama's stash' I believe was the term they used.

Bestbud,  October 20, 2009 11:50 PM

C B Kurtz... nice, Im agreeing with Sarah going on Oprah--- have no misgivings about it what so ever!

Oprah is the one who's going have the most to learn from this get together... she's in for a real treat and deep down will come away the better for It... Sarah is so far above Oprah in the grand scheme of things... there is no comparison... Oprah has a talk show for Gods sake.. it's akin to make believe Hollywood stuff!

Sarah depth and purpose of life and Country far exceeds anything Oprah ever thought of or is capable of.

A States-person vs a talk show host!... It's laughable!

CCRWM,  October 20, 2009 11:53 PM

Before you all get too disgusted or discouraged remember that Axelrod hired 400 people to jump on the internet and make derogatory or critical statements of anyone who is deemed to be "opposed" to Obama. Trust me there is not as much hatred or vitriol out there against
Sarah Palin as some would like us to believe. I'm not saying there isn't any, I just dont believe it's as much as we would be led to believe.

Anyway, I wasn't too happy to hear that Oprah got the first interview but I trust Sarah knows what she is doing and wading into that venue s brave and we know Sarah is brave and has the courage of her convictions... I guess I'll have to set my DVR to record it. I haven't seen that show in years especially since she got into the New Age garbage and never since she endorsed Obama.

gelston,  October 20, 2009 11:55 PM

i agree entirely

manajordan,  October 21, 2009 12:00 AM

Great write up sir! I'm excited for this whole book tour to start. We've got your back Guv!

ellen,  October 21, 2009 12:10 AM

I am amazed at how much Palin has been talked about over the past 5 or so months, considering she has not spoken publicly in the US since her resignation.  If you think about it, every week people are talking about her in print and on the radio (and not just at places like C4P).

I cannot wait to see the effects of her book tour.

Don't forget, it will rogue Palin. Uncensored and not handled by the McCain camp- something we have not yet seen in full force.

Nande,  October 21, 2009 12:11 AM

Great summary - you are right on.  This interview will definitely be a win-win.  As I said in the previous post on this subject, I have no doubt Gov. Palin will do well in this interview.  The best interviews are made by people who have interesting things to say - the Gov always has something interesting to say (and she's good for a bit of her trademark humor too).  I think some of the (open-minded) skeptics might just come away with a new sense of respect for Gov. Palin.

techno,  October 21, 2009 12:20 AM

Let me deal with the topic "the politics of personality".

First let me explore the Freud's 3 states of personality: the superego, ego, and id.

For Sarah Palin, her expression of her superego will allow her to solidify her base and perhaps attract other like-minded conservatives to her tent who have been heretofore lukewarm towards Sarah due to the MSM smears of her or because they felt the jury was still out that her reputation could be restored. After you watch Oprah you will know for sure that Sarah is a CONSERVATIVE.

As for her id I believe Oprah will try her best to expose Sarah's flaws by trying to get Sarah to answer questions from an emotional crucible, getting her to display signs of anger, testiness, annoyance,  petulance, discomfort, edginess, animosity, rudeness, flippancy, or the knockout punch, have nervous breakdown on national TV. What most people don't realize is how RATIONAL Sarah really is. Sarah is no frivolous southern belle of the Old South.

So what I believe might swing some independents and moderates to her camp is Sarah's ego, the part of her personality that reveals her self-esteem and her self-discipline to a larger audience combined with conveying an acute sense of the emerging reality and a political clarity that understands the issues of the day and can competently address them in an intelligent, reasonable manner that not only registers with the audience but also causes them to sit up and take notice and rationally assess her political acumen and later on reflection rate her a top-notch GOP leader worthy of a second look.

Wildmanbill,  October 21, 2009 12:29 AM

reading the comments on the O's page. How many times to we have to dis-prove the whole"kill him" comment. Some people are just sheep being led to the slaughter.
How come you never hear what the people at the Obama rallies were yelling about Sarah at his rallies. From what I understand, any woman would be offended by those comments.

KeeleyH,  October 21, 2009 12:30 AM

I think the haters are hyperventilating because they fear Sarah will CHARM the world going on Oprah. No! No! No! The world must not get a chance to actually LIKE Palin! LOL!

Mark my word, Oprah will be charmed by Sarah.

Ceejay,  October 21, 2009 12:32 AM

I believe in Sarah , and just hope that she does not walk into a "trap" with these liberals, oprah being one of them, knowing that the is in the tank for obama, Sarah needs to be on target with everything as I am sure the radicals in dc want to have her tripped up with a question to see her quietly go away into the night.

Sarah 2012!

Good points, techno.

I think one of the biggest flaws with our 'leadership' in Washington is their blindness when it comes to learning from history.
Hopefully Palin, by successfully using Reagan's playbook, will show these politicians just how important learning from history can be.

gelston,  October 21, 2009 12:47 AM

if a Greek or latin edition of "Going Rogue: An American Life" is released, we will finally know where Brianus went.

Lakerfanalways,  October 21, 2009 12:55 AM

The whole "kill him" statement is so idiotic. It was NEVER said. I watched every one of Sarah's rallies online, I NEVER EVER herad that statement at all. Once, I heard someone yell something, not sure what it was, but it was AFTER Sarah mentioned Bill Ayers name, then someone yelled something. So yeah, if someone did say kill him, it was at Bill Ayers, a terrorist..not at Obama. Obama zombies are really pathetic aren't they. Like Sarah has any say in what people say at her rallies. Have Obama supporters appologized to Sarah for those disgusting T shirts that were made that her daughers saw or those celebrities who asked for Sarah to be gang raped. I haven't heard Obama apologize for their actions

Recovering Democrat,  October 21, 2009 1:38 AM

Well, I have a unique spin on the Oprah interview because I AM a recovering Democrat. Ha!

It was because I listened to George Bush's RNC speech that I started giving conservatives a chance back in 2004. I think a lot of people are probably like me. None of us are completely partisan ... There must have been SOME point in Clinton's presidency that you liked him, no?

And for me, though I voted for Gore, and initially supported Kerry, something touched me when I heard Bush speak of the troops. I was really surprised. Because I sat down to watch the speech with one view of him - the enemy - and wound up being a supporter.

I like to irritate liberals by saying I only voted against Obama because of Joe Biden.

They're completely unprepared for that and don't even see that so many liberals said the same thing about Sarah Palin.

recovering, thanks for sharing that.
I was a maggot infected hippe in the 60's (not completely) who voted for Jimmy Carter. It did not matter since I lived in Massachusetts. I can not remember my epiphany, I was atracted to John Anderson first and went for Ronald Reagan when I listened to him. I have never looked back... except to laugh at myself. At least I grew up.
I knew the left very well and saw things I find hard to believe now. Crowds in the streets, tear gas and bayonets. 100's being arrested in the streets.

NYPalinPower,  October 21, 2009 2:02 AM

What does Sarah have to lose?  She will be in front of an audience who have their minds made up and already THINK they know her.

Oprah will want to "feel Sarah's energy" because she is a truth seeker and very intuitive.  I have a feeling she is not quite sure and does not believe all the media garbage and is eager to meet Sarah in person and judge for herself.   Oprah looks for the good in people, so it shouldn't be so hard, I just wouldn't try to "sell" her.  Sarah needs to just be genuine and real and go with her heart.

Oprah is not a phoney and neither is Sarah, so they should get along fine.  I don't see Oprah as one that would be cruel by trying to trick Sarah or act as the President's shark (Oprah knows karma well), but Sarah will certainly have to be prepared for anything just in case.

Sarah shouldn't hard sell the book though or go forward with too much of an agenda because then it would sound to people rehearsed like she's talking a political soundbite.  Instead Sarah needs to show her human side as well as her intelligent side, especially her "common sense" philosophy.  The book will sell naturally anyway without her even trying to push it, just like it did from the beginning!

So in essence it will be about Oprah trying to get to know Sarah.  And of course that should equate to millions of others getting to know her as well.  And of course a few book sales :-)

about Oprah trying to get to know Sarah

That is exactly right, NYP....Because of the high intensity of the campaign into which Sarah was thrust last year, she never got the benefit of a "get to know you" interview in hostile territory. It was hostile from day one. The knives came out.

I think this will be a relaxed interview that makes Sarah and Oprah look good. They might even find some common ground since they're both trailblazers. (And they share the same three letters in the last part of their first names. LOL) RAH!

CliffNZ,  October 21, 2009 3:19 AM

I just read some of the nasty comments.  I bet a lot of them came from people who would say they admired Obama because he was 'inclusive' and 'uniting.'  Their rage at Oprah is so incredibly childish. What are they worried about? Don't they want Sarah to talk publicly so their disdain can be validated? We know the answer - they are worried the influence all their prejudice, bigotry and irrational hatred have will be significantly weakened with this kind of exposure.  They really are pathetic.

I offer this for whatever it may be worth -- a little personal insight into Okra's personality. One of my friends was actually a guest on her show several years ago. She was in a group of performers who had been chosen for a segment on up and coming stars or something like that. Anyway, one of the producers came into the holding room where my friend and the others were waiting, said that Okra would be coming by to say hello, and they were ORDERED NOT TO LOOK DIRECTLY AT HER! Thta pretty much told me everything I ever needed to know.

Well, I'm off to stuff my poor diseased body with seafood, grease and sugar for 6 days. I think I've earned it.

Carry on comrades.

I would think the Facebook essays, the dynamic speeches in Hong Kong and Evansville or 20,000 people showing up to see Palin in Middle New York State would have caused a stir in the media. But Sarah going on Oprah has set off a stir in the media equal to Governor Palin's resignation. It's a strange world out of touch with reality.
Governor Palin will have Oprah and her audience eating out of her hand.

Anonymous,  October 21, 2009 8:13 AM

We all here are worried for Sarah -- but I think she knows that she has to appear before the Oprah audience because she needs to plant the seed of doubt (about their preconceived notions of her) in their heads.  Oprah herself will be gracious.  I have no doubt.  If she's not, after just a couple of "firm" questions, Sarah will have charmed her, and Oprah, I predict will come out of the interview completely changed.

Sarah is much more persuasive than most people know.  I believe she has the ear of "the man upstairs", and He will give her all she needs to change hearts.

Nice. In stark contrast to black liberals, these black republicans are more intelligent and comfortable about themselves. They are more issue oriented and free thinkers.

If you want to see the real Oprah try and find a clip of her interviewing chicken king frank purdue at channel 2 in baltimore when she worked there . She walked off stage  for almost 10 minutes in the middle of the interview when he returned an insult that she threw at him.

Governor Palin once again steals the media spotlight for the 24 hour news cycle from everyone - including the President of the United States of America and leader of the Free World.

Boy, this is beginning to sound like a broken record.

Oh, and this was done by no TV appearance and no interviews.

Oprah must be thinking to herself,  "But....but....I am the Queen of All Media Dammit?!!"

I certainly wouldn't rule it out.  There will be rioting if Teh One is dethroned.
