Robert Stacy McCain: NY-23 Saturday Notebook; Update: Scozzafava Quits Race, Text of Withdrawal Added; Update: Blowout?

The Other McCain has been on the road in NY-23 for several days. This morning he posted this report from the ground in Upstate New York:

The cool news? Instapundit linked my American Spectator item about Democrats pouring in the big money against Doug Hoffman. I don't think it will be enough to elect Bill Owens, and I don't think Joe Biden will make a difference, either. Go back and check the 2008 Democratic primaries. The 23rd District was Hillary territory. Biden carries no weight up here. But I'll try to go see Joe, just in case he makes another one of his classic gaffes.

Friday afternoon, when word got around that NRCC was pulling its resources out of Dede Scozzafava's campaign, I overheard a guy explaining to a buddy what Team Hoffman's basic strategy had been from the start: "Kill Dede and we win."

Simple, brutal and true: The 23rd District is overwhelmingly Republican, and the Hoffman people knew that if Scozzafava couldn't get Republican votes, she couldn't win. Once it became apparent to Republican voters that Dede was a guaranteed loser, the momentum shift to Hoffman was inevitable.

This is where Newt Gingrich really exposed his cluelessness, parroting misleading talking-points provided by the equally clueless Republican "insiders" who handpicked Scozzafava and wasted hundreds of thousands of RNC/NRCC dollars on her doomed campaign.

[...]

By trying to depict Hoffman as a "spoiler," Gingrich was 180 degrees out of phase with the truth: Scozzafava is actually the "spoiler" in this race. If you find anybody willing to bet money that Dede will break 20% on Tuesday, take that bet. She could finish as low as 15%, but the one thing I can guarantee she won't do is win.

Maybe Gingrich backed Scozzafava because she reminds him of his favorite subject: Dede is history.

Read the rest here. McCain has lots of good information and is continuously updating from the road in NY-23. Contribute to Doug Hoffman's campaign here.

Update by Doug: (H/T Whitmey) Stacy McCain is reporting that Dede Scozzafava has quite the race:

Just confirmed that Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava has quit the race. Speaking to supporters, Scozzafava broke down in tears.

[...]

Scozzafava, the hand-picked choice of the New York state GOP in the key 23rd District special election, reportedly will throw her support to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air is confirming the story, as is Josh Kraushaar at the Politico.

Update II by Doug: (H/T Stacy McCain) Ali Akbar has text of Scozzafava's announcement:

Dear Friends and Supporters:

Throughout the course of my campaign for Congress, I have made the people of the 23rd District and the issues that affect them the focal point of my campaign. As a life long resident of this District, I care deeply and passionately about its people and our way of life. Whether as a candidate for Congress, a State Assemblywoman or a small town Mayor, I have always sought to act with the best interest of our District and its residents in mind—and today I again seek to act for the good of our community.

The opportunity to run as the Republican and Independence Party candidate to represent the 23rd District has been and remains one of the greatest honors of my life. During the past several months, as I’ve traveled the district, meeting and talking with voters about the issues that matter most to them, I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of support I’ve received as I sought to serve as their voice in Washington. However, as Winston Churchill once said, Democracy can be a fickle employer, and the road to public office is not always a smooth one.

In recent days, polls have indicated that my chances of winning this election are not as strong as we would like them to be. The reality that I’ve come to accept is that in today’s political arena, you must be able to back up your message with money—and as I’ve been outspent on both sides, I’ve been unable to effectively address many of the charges that have been made about my record. But as I’ve said from the start of this campaign, this election is not about me, it’s about the people of this District. And, as always, today I will do what I believe serves their interests best.

It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support. Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit to do so. I am and have always been a proud Republican. It is my hope that with my actions today, my Party will emerge stronger and our District and our nation can take an important step towards restoring the enduring strength and economic prosperity that has defined us for generations.

On Election Day my name will appear on the ballot, but victory is unlikely. To those who support me – and to those who choose not to – I offer my sincerest thanks.

Dede

Update III by Doug: (H/T jimr3) Via Fox News:

Ken Spain, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said Scozzafava is releasing supporters to vote for Hoffman.

This is all great news, but it's not over yet folks. Scozzafava's name will still be on the ballot and the Democrat Party is pouring money into this race. Go to Doug Hoffman's website, open up those wallets, and dig deep if you can.

Update IV by TR: Prior to this news, PPP(D) found that Hoffman was on his way to a blowout:

With about 200 interviews down we had Hoffman 45 Owens 26 Scozzafava 17...her withdrawal will just make it that much easier for Hoffman

However, the Siena poll conducted before this news shows a toss-up between Hoffman and Owens, with Hoffman gaining 12 points since the last Siena poll. His Republican support has increased from 27% to 50%.

Either way, Hoffman is now an overwhelming favorite to win on Intrade.

Morning Whit, Newt is going to need  the 4077 mash unit to remove all the bullets from his feet after this one and he is going to be crippled a long time. ON a sadder note msn has a levi clip trashing Sarah on its home page today. if you have eaten dont go there and haraldo  is going to have a trash Sarah piece on fox tonight.

I heard somewhere that there were football games on today and tomorrow. Something about the World Series too.

But NY-23 is SO much more exciting . . .

:-)

Glorious!

This is where Newt Gingrich really exposed his cluelessness, parroting misleading talking-points provided by the equally clueless Republican "insiders"

Indeed!

Sarah Palin = Game Changer!

KeeleyH,  October 31, 2009 11:15 AM

With her name still on the ballot, could she still take enough votes away from Hoffman? I hope everyone who votes are informed of her drop out.

CharterOakie,  October 31, 2009 11:17 AM

YES !!!

Oh, and good day to you all, barbarians.  God bless.  Another great day!

Off to my son's football game.  Ta Ta for now.

Sarah America!

KeeleyH,  October 31, 2009 11:20 AM

I wonder what those who called Sarah's endorsement a "blunder" are thinking now? It seems that they were the ones who made a blunder. LOL.

GAHanson,  October 31, 2009 11:22 AM

Notice Scozzafava didn't endorse Hoffman, that's sleezy.  She's probably hoping her liberal supporters will vote for Owens.  But, it sounds as if Hoffman is having some pretty heavy hitters campaigning for him this weekend, and Owens has the Biden Comedy Show backing him up.

Mia,  October 31, 2009 11:25 AM

Have you been drinking and driving again???  I told you that wasn't good at all.

toughluck,  October 31, 2009 11:54 AM

A victory for Sarah :)    she has the power. (Its amazing to me she did this without a single appearance.. and only one facebook post)

Now lets see if Hoffman was right and Dede was spliting the liberal vote.. I hope not, and I hope Hoffman manages a win.

I wish these things were stagerred so now we could shift focus to Harmer in the CA 10th district and give him a helping hand.

manajordan,  October 31, 2009 12:12 PM

Well that's good news. I was just watching Carl Cameron on Fox talking about Dede's withdrawal. Talking about the big names who have gotten involved he said every name except Sarah's. He even pointed out that Mitt didn't endorse either one.

gelston the knowitall,  October 31, 2009 12:12 PM

IMHO, It was not Sarah's endorsement which changed the scenery in NY-23.
I think you people need to look at what really happened. The race changed when Tom Sapwolf arrived on the scene, feet on the ground in Watertown, NY.
This is Sapwolf Power!!!  ... :<)

juju,  October 31, 2009 12:15 PM

I was watching that Fox new update too.  I could just smash CC in the face.  He knew what he was doing.  That is bad reporting.  Does he think we are stupid???

In Key New York Race, Barracuda Chews Up Mitt
Romney ducks the leadership test

What do you find most often in the middle of the road? Road kill. Mitt Romney, who hopes to be the GOP's next presidential nominee, couldn't bring himself to endorse anyone in New York state's contentious 23rd congressional  district special election.

The conservative grassroots have rejected Scozzava, the party's official candidate in New York's 23rd. It started out with the base in the district as conservatives gathered around businessman Doug Hoffman and that rebellion has now gone national. Sarah Palin, using her unique sense of timing, one week ago became the biggest name of in-prime party leaders to endorse Hoffman.

Be sure to read the rest here: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/politics/Barracuda-Chews-Up-Soft-Mittens.html

I read on another blog that Fox News Carl Cameron (Palin hater) just said that T-Paw was the big name in NY-23.  Freaking unbelievable if true.

gelston the knowitall,  October 31, 2009 12:23 PM

On a more serious note, I agree that The Sword Has Been Passed To A New Generation.
I have posted with you and with Adam Brickley for 18 months. It is a joy to watch history unfold. The closest moment in my life to these Days of Sarah was the night in April 1969 when I stood in front of the Boston University chapel. It was the night of The Rev Dr. Martin Luther King's death. That chapel was where Dr King took his divinity training. The silent flow of emotion through that gathered crowd was something that you could not reproduce.
The people who meet here are so similar. Giving an energy and an encouragement to a movement which will better America.
We are watching history unfold.
God Bless Sarah Palin and her family. And God bless all of you.

The far left is really loosing it folks.  Another over-the-top insulting fundraising leter, this time from James Carville.

In part:
With Sarah Palin out there raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to stack Congress with those tea party lunatics, the media is watching to see how Grassroots Democrats respond.
Help us raise $500,000 in response to Sarah Palin's fundraising for the tea party nut jobs. For every dollar you give before Midnight Tuesday, a group of Democrats will match it with $2 of their own, tripling your impact.

e-mail from Michele Bachmann:

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann released the following statement today following press reports that Dede Scozzafava has dropped out off the special election in NY-23: "First I want to thank Dede Scozzafava for her hard-fought campaign in this special election.  And, I'd especially like to thank her for dropping out of this race for the good of the Party.  I'm certain that it was not an easy decision for her to make, but it was the right one. "I'd also like to urge anyone who can help Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate in that race, to mobilize all their energy and resources to ensure Hoffman's victory next Tuesday. "The polls all show that Hoffman's message of fiscal responsibility and conservatism are resonating strongly with the voters in that district.  I am very hopeful that they will send him across the finish line in first place Tuesday night." For more information about Hoffman's campaign, check out his website:

jimr3,  October 31, 2009 12:43 PM

Question for Carl Cameron.  Why isn't Tim Pawlenty's name mentioned in this fundraising letter if he is the big name in NY-23?

I think he would do better to endorse Sarah and do it fast.

JeanA,  October 31, 2009 12:51 PM

RNC throwing their resources behind Hoffman.

yogi41,  October 31, 2009 12:53 PM

Let Carl Cameron spin this any way he wants; he's never going to give Sarah credit; so be it. I expect others will, though. And I have to give Pataki kudos; as huge as it was that Sarah endorsed and moved Hoffman to the front of the line, I think it was the Pataki endorsement that pushed Dede out of the race. Out of all of the endorsements, IMO, it was Palin and Pataki that got us to where we are today.

JeanA,  October 31, 2009 12:53 PM

The scroll running at the bottom of the Foxnews TV show lists Sarah Palin's name first.

For me? You give me ideas which I use everyday with people around me. It's on my facebook page. it is in my conversations (at the appropriate times) and it is in my comments on other sites.
All each of us can do is to touch the people at God sends into our lives each day.
All we can do is to counter the lies that are out there (like this hogwash about the Gov of Minnesooooota).
As was said on Adam Brickleys site, "I am Sarah Palin." That is a line from the movie Sparticus:

nancy.neumann,  October 31, 2009 1:04 PM

I think it's time we stop referring to the Governor as the "potential" future of the party.  Folks, this lady is shaping the debate and influencing elections.  Is there still much to be done?  Yes!  Does she still have a lot to prove?  Yes.  The fact of the matter is, however, that Governor Palin is the only politician out there at the moment that is marshalling public sentiment in a way that will determine the future of this nation.  WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT HER AND THE VALUES FOR WHICH SHE STANDS TO SAVE THIS NATION!!!

karenfromny,  October 31, 2009 1:12 PM

KeeleyH,  October 31, 2009 1:18 PM

The Doug Hoffman campaign has been brewing for sometime. Credit certainly goes to Fred Thompson, the Tea Partiers and others, their support helped Hoffman slowly gained traction, but it was Sarah Palin who acted as Accelerant that led to many others to follow. Someone needs to remind Carl Cameron that T-Paw had not even heard about NY-23 a couple of hours before Sarah's endorsement. Now T-Paw eventual endorsement is certainly welcome and helped with the continued momentum as with others who followed like Pataki. But the story in this race is Doug Hoffman, the Tea Party and Sarah Palin. There is no doubt about it.

AmeriCuda,  October 31, 2009 1:22 PM

FOX NEWS sticking Sarah in the back once again. No one will ever convince me the NEWS side is pro Sarah.
Hopefully CC will get a few choice e-mails over this snub.

JeanA,  October 31, 2009 1:22 PM

I am Sarah Palin.

Recovering Democrat,  October 31, 2009 1:23 PM

O/T Not to put a damper on anything but I watched the GOP Weekly address, and I'm underwhelmed. Please tell me that's not what Sarah was calling a gamechanger. There were some good ideas, to be sure, but I don't see how it's going to change the healthcare fight. Is there something more? Am I missing something?

JeanA,  October 31, 2009 1:24 PM

I can't find an email for that clown.

KeeleyH,  October 31, 2009 1:24 PM

Fred Thompson and the Tea Party helped Hoffman get on the track. Sarah gave Hoffman the push needed to move forward faster. Pataki kicked the obstacle (Dede) out of the way before the finish line.

Puma.for.Life,  October 31, 2009 1:27 PM

Yesterday on Limbaugh's show, he said that Sarah Palin was way ahead of everyone on this thing..(NY23) didn't know if anyone else had already mentioned that.

Nancy,  October 31, 2009 1:30 PM

Tim Pawlenty is one of the many people that supported Doug Hoffman, because "Sarah told me to".

yogi41,  October 31, 2009 1:31 PM

Don't know and that's something we'll never know. All I know is, IMO, Sarah gets the credit for bringing Hoffman from 3rd to Victory, with or without Dede in the race. I'm just not going to underestimate how much Pataki's endorsement means in that part of NY. I'm glad that Sarah started the bandwagon effect: every "conservative" jumped on board and now they're smelling pretty good right now. As we have seen, T-Paw is going to get a lot of the credit from news media outlets. But to me, it was Sarah in the lead and Pataki bringing up the rear that put us where we are today.

wisetrog,  October 31, 2009 1:33 PM

I think what Sarah meant by gamechanger is not that John Boehner is suddenly going to morph into a charismatic speaker but she's gonna let the GOP put forward an alternative, plug it and use it to beat Pelosi  and put pressure on the dems to back this plan and not the Pelosi trainwreck. Remember some blue dogs and mod dems were already approaching GOP for their ideas. So she is trying to create a momentum for an alternate bill which will sevrely deflate the balloons of Pelosi not that they need deflating. :)

yogi41,  October 31, 2009 1:36 PM

Yep and unfortunately, he's going to reap a ton of credit for it. It will be his name that the MSM will credit, not Sarah Palin.

KeeleyH,  October 31, 2009 1:38 PM

The news before Sarah's endorsement was all about Hoffman, the third party candidate being a spolier in NY-23, potentially giving Dem a victory. Sarah made him a contender.

I didn't first read about NY-23 on C4P or any other conservative sites. I just read a general headline somewhere about NY-23 and found out more about it. The first thing that came to my mind was "He needs Sarah's help!" It was THAT obvious.

wisetrog,  October 31, 2009 1:39 PM

Not if we can help it. If we barbarians can shake up the GOP beast, we surely can shake up the media. Bombard Fox News with emails, demanding them to credit Gov.Palin

Tommy Report,  October 31, 2009 1:45 PM

Don't think so Yogi.  The media will play this victory Tuesday night as a victory for the right-wing and the Palin wing of the party.

I'd guess she'll issue a FB statement after the race is called for Hoffman and that the media will play with it.

yogi41,  October 31, 2009 1:49 PM

I can see the cable news outlets doing that, but not the network news, which is what I mean by MSM. I predict they (CBS, NBC, ABC) don't even mention Palin's name.

Now watch me go down in flames....

yogi41,  October 31, 2009 1:49 PM

Agree. And yet, he may very well be her V.P.

Mrs. Terry Johnson,  October 31, 2009 1:51 PM

Soon the left will have a new d**k to admire!

Mrs. Terry Johnson,  October 31, 2009 1:53 PM

Who cares about CC!  Soros already said it would a victory for Sarah.  That's the person I really want to notice.

yogi41,  October 31, 2009 1:56 PM

What really cracks me up about this race is that Palin didn't even have to leave Alaska to make a difference. One FB post was as effective as a campaign appearance. She may start something new here. Imagine in 2010, she does all of her campaigning on FB, never making an appearance, and all of her endorsed candidates win. That would be hilarious!

Mrs. Terry Johnson,  October 31, 2009 1:58 PM

I love it.  James calls his own wife a nut job.  I love being called a nut job.  It shows that I'm making enough noise!

bitterclinger,  October 31, 2009 2:00 PM

Puma,  I heard Rush say that.  I believe his exact wording was "She was ahead of the curve."  Another great one from Rush was "We are New York 23."  This race has become the make or break for conservatism in the age of Obama, to show that the country is not up for socialism and is still a right-minded country.

One thing I have to add is that I think we've given short shrift to the candidate himself.  Doug Hoffman DID come in last in all those council votes, HOWEVER, he was the only conservative candidate to essentially say, "Someone'e got to stand up for conservatism, it may as well be me."

He gets a lot of ribbing about not being a charismatic candidate, but he showed deep down that he had the guts to do what needed to be done, not having a clue that events would tanspire as they did!  Way to go, Doug.  Here's to believing in yourself and putting the power of the individual on full display!

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  October 31, 2009 2:01 PM

To all of the critics who told her to leave the room, she says, " Fine. I'll stay in my living room on my couch in AK and write these Facebook posts".

Perhaps this is a little juvenile, but wouldn't it be funny if this was Sarah's reaction to all of the naysayers and crazies:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX7wtNOkuHo

Doug Brady,  October 31, 2009 2:02 PM

Yogi41,
I agree to an extent.  Governor Palin's  was the most important endorsement and Pataki's was the second most important.  But I'm not sure Pataki's endorsement would have been forthcoming if Gov. Palin hadn't endorsed first, making the race winnable for Hoffman.  Once that happened, Pataki's endorsement followed which effectively was the end for Dede.

By the way, I doubt T-Paw's endorsement meant anything at all.  Sorry Carl Cameron.

TSM Admin,  October 31, 2009 2:07 PM

A lot of words will be written about this week in the next few days, weeks and months.  Some good and insightful, some not so. However, it can all be reduced to two words - Palin Power!

The problem is the GOP rarely thinks strategically, the Wofford/Thornburgh race that both Carville and I believe Begala were a part of, was a bellweather that they ignored. Likewise the Hutchinson
(back then) Allen and Whitman races were the sign of a rising tide, that would crest in Nov. '94.
They have had this problem this time around putting forth a lackluster candidate in Tedesco, backing Specter, till the skidmarks were showing on the driveway, and I'm trying to forget Crist.

Predictions on when Huck and Mitt endorse. I think Huck will do it some time this weekend and Mitt stays out of it completely.

AKReport,  October 31, 2009 2:20 PM

Sarah should go to NY-23 and claim victory

juju,  October 31, 2009 2:22 PM

Maybe when OBAMA  said people were getting all up set and used the words all wee weed up...it was code for PP (Palin Power).   Now he knows what is is like to get PP all over himself...Michelle....please order some more depends.

gelston the knowitall,  October 31, 2009 2:30 PM

Mitt will endorse on Wenesday, 11/04/2009  :<)

Indemind,  October 31, 2009 2:33 PM

Hey Dr. Your killing me here, ROTF-LMAO...Wenesday

Bill in Baltimore,  October 31, 2009 3:40 PM

Some might thing it corny, but it does resonate with me and I've said it:

"I am Sarah Palin".

When crowds go wild, they are in a not so abstract sense cheering themselves, because, again, Sarah IS us.

karenfromny,  October 31, 2009 3:42 PM

I said it yesterday.  There is no way she would use the phrase "game changer" and be referring to John Boehner.  He might be the first step to a plan for this week.

I am guessing some FB activity... type,type,send..

karenfromny,  October 31, 2009 3:44 PM

remember, Gov. Palin doesn't care who gets the credit as long as it gets done..

Bill in Baltimore,  October 31, 2009 3:47 PM

I am Spartacus.

I am Sarah Palin.

My wife is Sarah Palin.

My 2 daughters are Sarah Palin.

Bill in Baltimore,  October 31, 2009 3:51 PM

very interesting interview with DeDe

Bill in Baltimore,  October 31, 2009 3:56 PM

Where did you watch the GOP weekly address ? I went to the GOP link on Sarah's Facebook note (because she told me to), but I couldn't figure it out . . . there was the 3 minute intro, and the whole statement from Oct 30, but I couldn't find a link for today's address . . .

Bill in Baltimore,  October 31, 2009 3:59 PM

Palin Power = the Forehead even acknowledged it . . .

Bill in Baltimore,  October 31, 2009 4:04 PM

Gelston,

really, we have to be organized. I know what you are saying, but there does have to be a "machine" (of sorts, not the bad kind), that get's people invovled, organized, etc.

or . . . just have Sarah Facebook for all the right candidates, then she can go back to hanging out with Todd and Piper and the rest  . . .

Bill in Baltimore,  October 31, 2009 4:05 PM

What’s happening in the country today, with the explosion of Sarah Palin is two things:

1. an abstract application of the Valley of Dry Bones, Ezekial 37:1 – 14, especially
"and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet--a vast army"

2. Acts 5:39
"But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men;
you will only find yourselves fighting against God."

hrh,  October 31, 2009 4:44 PM

Yep, he said it at least twice. :)

Too bad tomorrow's Chris Wallace interview is already taped ...

karenfromny,  October 31, 2009 5:20 PM

Bill,

I think that is it.  3min 20sec.  I don't see anything else.

Bill in Baltimore,  October 31, 2009 5:23 PM

I think the message then was garbled from Sarah / John B. The weekly address
was actually Oct 30 (according to the site), and the text was already posted
on the site Sarah pointed to.
But I do like what I see in the plan, the bullet points look good.

toughluck,  October 31, 2009 5:45 PM

Ha, ha, ha... good one!

Yep I'll stay at home and type, type, send :)

Recovering Democrat,  October 31, 2009 7:27 PM

I just followed the link on Sarah's FB and it was about a 6-7 minute clip of Boehner.

Recovering,
I see a 3:42 min Boehner clip, that's it. No worries

I think you are going to have many more opportunities to post that!
