What Jed Clampett could teach the GOP
I’m a 35-year-old long-time taxpayer, and if being a member of the first generation of American youth exposed to 24-hour-a-day cable television taught me anything, it was this: there is no situation that cannot be understood if broken down and filtered through “The Beverly Hillbillies.”
“The Beverly Hillbillies” was and remains one of the most popular series in the history of American television. Considering the theme song, I take you to this passage: “…but then one day he was shootin’ at some food/and up from the ground come a bubbl’n crude … oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.”
About as Joycean as it gets for a sitcom about hillibilles, yes?
Hillbilly Jed Clampett took a shot at a rabbit and discovered a patch of oil worth in excess of $60 million, and while that doesn’t sound like much, keep in mind we’re talking about 1960s dollars, a time when businessmen flew the friendly skies with steak knives aplenty and the term “Dollar” meant something to even the people who didn’t actually work for them. I’m guessing there are days when The Powers That Be in the Republican Party feel like Jed Clampett, yet instead of celebrating its newfound wealth, the GOP is doing everything possible to jam that vaulting stream of Texas tea right back into the slug-created spout from which it spewed.
The million-dollar shot that the GOP took was Sen. John McCain’s announcement of Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate. As we’re talking hillbilly, let the record show even a blind squirrel finds an acorn ever now and again. Gov. Palin was an unknown, a wild card of the highest order, a Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot selection in a high-stakes game if there ever was one. Yet, as soon as she began speaking on that platform in Ohio, up came the black gold. As hard as this may be to understand, Gov. Palin appeals to a very specific type of American, and that type happens to be what used to be called “The GOP Base.”
Gov. Palin, the million-dollar shot, opened up a vein, and now the GOP leadership probably regrets her selection. “Goodness, wouldn’t life be easier without that pesky Sarah Palin being a household name, what with the inter-tubes and the Facespace and such…” Few Conservatives are as politically talented as Gov. Palin, but millions of us not only identify with her trials and tribulations, we admire her for getting to where she is on hard work and merit – did I mention we damn-sure like her politics?
This is not about Gov. Palin, though. Rather, it’s about the millions of us who identify with her who the GOP now see as pests to be swatted away rather than a base to be courted. Gov. Palin was that first bubble of black gold, and all of us behind her have come rushing out in a tidal wave of good fortune for the GOP, if only the party would recognize it.
To phrase it in words most would understand: Let me be clear, Conservatives, and no one but Conservatives, get Republicans elected.
In the months that followed the announcement of Gov. Palin’s addition to the McCain ticket and her stem-winding, cork-popping, status-gouging speech at the RNC Convention of ’08, thousands, then millions of people quite similar to Gov. Palin in attitude, background and yes, politics, began to get fed up about the direction of this country. Quite suddenly, with the help of a certain CNBC reporter, millions of Americans realized that we don’t have to sit back and take it quietly. Tea Parties started brewing, quietly at first, and then, all the sudden, they were everywhere.
On April 15, my friend Eric and I both took a vacation day from “work” and drove to Oklahoma City, participating in one of the largest Tax Day Tea Parties (“work” – that productive thing that creates wealth, is taxed and funds the various entitlement programs politicians are in love with). It was a genuine expression of First Amendment outrage, and what was the characterization of our efforts? We were promptly branded as “angry mobs,” to use one of the nice invectives of the day. Oh, and let’s not forget the permutation regarding those pesky bags of tea.
As the spring and summer wore on, word started getting out about The Healthcare Bill, a shape-shifting monstrosity code-name Project Beowulf. Instead of plot, though, this bill – like all bills – was larded with governmentese, meta-references to subsections C, L and Q, and sub-bills composing a Where’s Waldo of the Damned. By August, the Tea Parties held outdoors turned into the Town Halls held indoors, and it was as though oldsters hooked to oxygen tanks suddenly had rage pumping through those plastic tubes. People you wouldn’t guess ever willing or able to sit through an interminable zoning board meeting were suddenly citing, chapter and verse, sections of a healthcare bill few politicians had read, and those people, those pesky constituents, were making complex, astute arguments about a Byzantine subject to which even Read’s I, Pencil would defer. No man can make a pencil, but only a party of masochists, nihilists and fools could go along with what the Democrats have planned for American “health.”
With Doug Hoffman, the GOP finally met the first phase of its Waterloo, its Pickett’s Charge, its asinine hubris turned public for all the world to see. Hoffman may not win NY23 – why should he? In any room, GOP hero Newt Gingrich is likely the smartest man, and even he has proclaimed that to support Hoffman is a fool’s errand.
Hoffman’s not a career politician – hell, calling him a novice would be an insult to novices. Yet he happens to be one of those pesky Conservatives, and with the endorsements of Gov. Palin and Fred Thompson (and every aspiring national politician who actually can wrangle the Conservative base), he is gaining momentum. The GOP’s reaction to him is nothing short of absurd – by campaigning against him the GOP may as well wrap an explosive-vest around the torso of your party’s future and detonate it in the public square. NY23 is but one district in one special election, but this is to serve notice: Conservatives will no longer carry water for the GOP, no matter how much doom the party wants to envelope and obfuscate its reasoning.
We do not take talking points, not from Rush Limbaugh and not from Sarah Palin. However, Limbaugh and Palin are two among many who have a far better feel on the pulse of American Conservatism and the American public than your committees, delegations, pollsters, caucuses and ward leaders, and those of us who pay attention are fed up with the GOP’s wishy-washy desire to appease moderates. I don’t know if you anyone else has noticed, but the Democrats in charge care little for moderation or moderates, and while GOPers stand docile with olive branches and hands reached across the aisles, Donkeys come with sabers and have no quandary with chopping off hands and slitting throats.
Our patience, epic as it has been, has grown thin. If the GOP wishes to be Democrat Light 2.0, have at it, but we will no longer be appeased. Go after moderates with gusto and I wish you godspeed – have fun jockeying for position with the lowest common denominator against a lobby whose low has no floor.

I liked reading that! Thanks, C Brooks!
You are so right about hitting black gold!
She is something else.
Kurtz,
My goodness, when I read the headline I thought, good grief the ONLY thing I liked about the Clampetts was thier themesong...lol, it's true. I thought what possibly could this redneck, hick show have anything to do with conservatives/GOP?
But you redeemed yourself, by the end I was loving many quotes. Thanks...
"while GOPers stand docile with olive branches and hands reached across the aisles, Donkeys come with sabers and have no quandary with chopping off hands and slitting throats."
Kurtz,
What news have you about the Tea Party Express 2?
Great piece, C.B.! I think you hit on something I haven't seen written about ANYWHERE before: Sarah Palin inspired the Tea Party movement. This is what I believe, too. Yes, it truly is that simple. No one wants to acknowledge it in the media or the RINO ranks. Obviously, Sarah didn't call for the Tea Parties, and she doesn't have a tangible connection to them. Her connection is spirtual. She's the moral hero for the uprising. She IS the inspiration ... and perhaps the reason why millions of Americans decided to DO SOMETHING and take to the streets. I think it's taken awhile to make the connection in my mind.
I think it's gonna be very interesting to see it all play out ...
C.B.--
Chuckling all the way through, a veritable "tour de farce." Don't know how those synapses made the connection, but sure glad they did!
"Conservatives, and no one but Conservatives, get Republicans elected." GOP, can you hear me now?!
I saw them on my local news the other night here in Ca. They were going to be heading up the coast of Calif. I also read somewhere they were going to have a convention in Nashville. I don't know when but I would like to know because I might go there. They were going ask Sarah to speak at their convention.
Ok CB last one in the cement pond has to get the opossums for granny.
On rush today he said Ed Meese is backing hoffman. Americans have been looking for a real leader for a while now and all we had to do was see SARAH and we knew, honesty, character and courage. Just what we've been looking for!
Wheeeee Dawgie
Terri - I was apprehensive too - thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you C B Kurtz. Sarah is not only one in a million but one in a lifetime. Glad that I'm in the gereration of two great leaders in a lifetime ... Ronald Regan and Sarah Palin. Didn't know until tonight that Fred Thompson was supporting Hoffman. He was my guy in the primaries. Unfortunately think he waited to long to decide if he was going to run for Pres. But, then again, we wouldn't have known about Sarah.
OT - Levi is a turd ... and Katie Couric is jealous
Dude, I didn't think anyone under 50 would have an appreciation for Jed Clampett and The Beverly Hillbillies! You rock! And your comments are spot on! My only concern is what appears to be a longing for another party. Take notice now, we will take BACK the Republican Party and make it what Ronald Reagan saw it as.
Thank you very much for the great article.
I especially like this one, "oldsters hooked to oxygen tanks suddenly had rage pumping through those plastic tubes." You had me laughing so hard my family came running to read the article. :D
God bless Sarah, Todd, Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, Trig, and Tripp in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Prayer Warriors for Sarah Palin
TEA PARTY UP DATE......................PALIN KEYNOTE SPEAKER???
I just goggled Nashville Tea Party. They are having a convention at the Opryland Hotel on Feb. 4th to 6th. And they are saying Sarah Palin is the Keynote Speaker. Also, there was some radio or tv person (local) that had announced this on the radio or tv today or yesterday.
HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THIS AND HOW DO WE CONFIRM THIS????
great job, c brooks!!!
That's very original, very funny and very true. I loved it.
God bless Sarah
It's BS if it doesn't come from Meg or Sarah.
What the heck went on with fox news and oreilly tonight? i missed the first minute and when i came on Bill's talking point was about Sarah then Glenn was on with him they closed by saying they were going to have a major announcement next week.
Sarah says "I see things differently"
Sarah stands on principle.
She got me out of the house last fall, she inspired / inspires me.
And the conservative nation rises up and gets out of the house and says "This is the way it's gonna be".
Conservatives don't tell the leader what to do.
Conservative leaders don't tell the people what to do.
Conservatives simply ensure the leader sticks to conservative principles.
Johnmd - see my comments on "Palin's Good Day" for BOR, it was pretty good.
They said the book tour would prove to people if Sarah has what it takes. Not one of my questions.
Well, seeing as how I live in Nashville, if this is happening, I assure you I will find out about it. I can check with our local talk radio guys and see what they know. I'll also check with the local tea party folks. I've been pretty distracted the last few months, but I try to keep up with local events and haven't heard anything about this. The Opryland Hotel would be the only hotel big enough to hold a Sarah sized crowd, but I'm thinking it would require the arena downtown or the Titans (or the tampons as we're calling them this year) stadium.
Green Acres is the place to be.
It's a pretty familiar group here, but in case you've never read it or maybe need a refresher, read my "The Sarah Palin Effect scroll down a little bit
I penned this last fall after I read Sarah by Johnson, and I've only made one small change since then.
juju,
Heard the same thing. I also heard that they are workiing hard at getting Sarah to speak at said convention...SWEET!
juju,
Iheard rumor of that a while ago....nothing definate though.
"keep Manhatten, just give me that countryside"...lol
SARAH = BLACK GOLD .... DRILL BABY DRILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL...
Thanks Bean...My DH and I use to live in So. Illinois and we would come to Nashville a couple times a year. Always came at Christmas time to see the decorations at the Hotel. Beautiful.
And, we would always eat the Buffet at the Manor House...best buffet with crab legs and oysters. Wonderful
I was NOT really happy about the glenn/oreilly get the ratings tour... just my opinion...but I did not think glenn's remarks about how smart romneycare (who has already passed obamacare in MASS, where it is a DISASTER...prices UP, UP and AWAY...TAXES Up, UP, and AWAY... Glenn, what a SELL OUT...
Texas4P had it up yesterday briefly but then took it down, because the WSB has not confirmed it.
Smart Girl Politics is one of the sponsors and also changed its announcement until confirmation.
Here's the discussion on Tea Party Nation: http://www.teapartynation.com/forum/topics/tea-party-nation-announces-the, which mentions Sarah, and removing her from the announcement. Though you may need to be a member to read it ...
Nice column. However, I believe Hoffman will win. He has the momentum and his voters are more committed. And it won't only be Doug Hoffman who wins, but all of America. And Sarah will have a big notch on her totem showing the country that she has helped fill the the vacuum of leadership in the GOP.
Hey, Sapwolf--
You in NY 23? If so, how about some color commentary!
If you didn't see/hear the O'reilly show and the Beck discussion please try to catch it on the rerun or wherever. O'reilly was very positive in the talking points and follow-up with Beck. Beck's comments about Romney was that he couldn't cut it as the leader but would be a good CEO. Both agreee that the book tour will set the course for Sarah. Bell closed by saying that he hopes she will come on his show and he promisess to give her a fair shake and an opportuinty to talk to the people. I saw the whole thing a positive for Sarah.
The would be Bill not bell.
I would wonder if Glenn didn't have some loyalty to Mitt because of the Mormon connection. I'm Mormon also, but got over Mitt a LONG time ago.
