Chris Cillizza: Mark Kirk Seeks Governor Palin's Endorsement in the Illinois Senate Race

Representative Mark Kirk (RINO-IL) is running for Barack Obama's old Senate seat in Illinois in 2010. After Obama resigned his seat early to assume the presidency, Roland Burris was appointed by the ethically-challenged former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich immediately before Blago was impeached and removed from office. Burris, who has ethics problems of his own, has announced he will not seek re-election to a full term, making this an open seat. According to Chris Cillizza, Kirk is actively seeking the endorsement of Governor Palin:

Illinois Rep. Mark Kirk penned a memo to Republican poobah Fred Malek hoping to secure an endorsement from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for his Senate candidacy, according to a copy of the memo obtained by the Fix.

After noting that Palin will be in Chicago later this month to appear on "Oprah", Kirk writes that "the Chicago media will focus on one key issue: Does Gov[ernor] Palin oppose Congressman Mark Kirk's bid to take the Obama Senate seat for the Republicans?"

Kirk goes on to write that he is hoping for something "quick and decisive" from Palin about the race, perhaps to the effect of: "Voters in Illinois have a key opportunity to take Barack Obama's Senate seat. Congressman Kirk is the lead candidate to do that."

Malek confirmed the authenticity of the memo in an e-mail exchange with the Fix.

Kirk's memo is tangible evidence of the power of Palin's endorsement in a Republican primary. Kirk, a moderate by voting record in the House, is clearly very concerned about the negative impact a Palin endorsement of one of his primary opponents could have on his chances at being the party's nominee for the seat being vacated by appointed Sen. Roland Burris (D).

More here. Kirk is a well-known liberal Republican who is one of the eight House Republicans who voted for the Waxman-Markey cap and tax bill. He has had some success in raising money and is considered (by establishment types) to have the best chance of winning a statewide race in Illinois among GOP hopefuls.

Exit question: If Governor Palin was hurt by Doug Hoffman's loss in NY-23, why is a liberal Republican in the very blue state of Illinois seeking her endorsement?

Update by Doug: (H/T Whitney) Via Susan Kuczka of the Chicago Tribune:
In an interview of the two 10th Congressional District candidates conducted by the Tribune editorial board, Kirk would not say whether he believed Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, had the necessary qualifications to become president.

"Quite frankly, I don't know," said Kirk, 49, of Highland Park, when asked if Palin could step into the job. In answer to repeated inquiries about Palin's experience, Kirk said, “I would have picked someone different."

Update by TR: Mark Kirk's team confirmed the story.

Say no, Governor Palin!  He's for Cap-n-Tax!

alwaysfiredup,  November 4, 2009 4:56 PM

This seems like it could just be a cynical ploy...

Kentucky Colonel,  November 4, 2009 4:59 PM

I bet he'll issue a denial.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 4, 2009 5:01 PM

it's a setup, Kirk wants something "quick and decisive", and he's trying to put words in her mouth ? C'mon. Just say the darn words yourself.

Wildmanbill,  November 4, 2009 5:02 PM

I was thinking the same thing. We have to stand on principles.

Patty Hewes,  November 4, 2009 5:04 PM

I actuallly think Palin should either stay out of the race or endorse Kirk since it seems like he has the best shot at winning that senate seat.

CruelaDev,  November 4, 2009 5:07 PM

So ..I guess...if he HAS to ASK.. there must already be something wrong with him!
RINO!!!!!  Pehaps???

alwaysfiredup,  November 4, 2009 5:07 PM

Oh, I'm not all that wedded to principles, I'm just looking out for Palin.  I'm concerned that Kirk may really be asking for her non-endorsement, thinking she's poison or whatever the Leftist meme-of-the-day is.  If he is in earnest, he should have to prove that he would be a loyal Palinista before she gives him her seal-of-approval.  No more backstabbing.

Lakerfanalways,  November 4, 2009 5:08 PM

Kirk is a RINO LOSER. He is for everything she is against. She won't endorse him, I bet when she saw his letter, first she laughed, THEN she threw it away

Seabee,  November 4, 2009 5:08 PM

Rush vigorously defended Sarah Palin today, saying that Sarah Palin was not damaged by the loss of Doug Hoffman. I do not have access to Rush's 24/7 audio. Maybe Sheya can post the audio. It start @ 2:20 pm EST. 2nd segment start @ about 3:40 EST. Rush was ticked off from callers saying Sarah is damaged goods.

Whitney,  November 4, 2009 5:10 PM

My state has nothing to offer the US senate. It's so sad.

The only conservative credentials that Kirk has to offer is a Sarah Palin endorsement. He has none of his own.

Of course, Governor Palin has more you no what to offer than all, or at least most of, the male members of the Republican party.

Whitney,  November 4, 2009 5:11 PM

Not only is Kirk pro-cap and tax, he is nearly as pro-choice as Obama and has an F- rating from the NRA.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 4, 2009 5:14 PM

He's trying to draw her in . . . to Chicago

riley4palin,  November 4, 2009 5:16 PM

I hope Oprah asks her about a Mark Kirk endorsement and Governor Palin calmly responds, "I Vote Present!"

Obama quickly turns into a 2-pack a day Marlboro smoker.

Whitney,  November 4, 2009 5:16 PM

By the way, this is what Kirk had to say about Gov. Palin last fall:

http://archives.chicagotribune.com/2008/oct/01/local/chi-10th-district-race-01oct01

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2008/09/kirk-says-he-do.html

He said he would have picked someone different than Palin for VP and that he wasn't sure if she was qualified.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 4, 2009 5:18 PM

If the women of this nation don't rise up and tell the men and feminazis to "stop this crap, in regards to Sarah Palin, babies, and government intrusion", we're doomed.

The women let the men get a way with it. Ask manajordan.

KeeleyH,  November 4, 2009 5:21 PM

Someone should alert Sarah of this.

Whitney,  November 4, 2009 5:22 PM

In case you couldn't tell, I really don't like Mark Kirk.

Nancy,  November 4, 2009 5:24 PM

Is anyone else listening to Newt on Hannity, right now?
"My friends", and  I will swallow alot to get a vote for John Boehner to be speaker?, instead of Nancy Pelosi.

riley4palin,  November 4, 2009 5:24 PM

Whitney, good find.  Yes, I hope someone passes this on to the Governor.

kcarpenter,  November 4, 2009 5:24 PM

the media has now picked up on the fact that Kirk has trashed Palin in the past

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/11/kirk-seeking-palins-endorsement-for-senate-run----after-badmouthing-her-in-2008.php

LT,  November 4, 2009 5:25 PM

Oh heavens no, not Kirk. Even Democrat Tom Castillo would be far more worthy of a Palin endorsement. We have plenty of other strong prinicpled candidates for Senate. Lowry, Zadek, Hughes, Arrington...Oh man would the MSM flip out if Sarah endorsed Arrington!!

Whitney,  November 4, 2009 5:26 PM

I know, LT, isn't it horrible?!

Whitney,  November 4, 2009 5:28 PM

Mark Kirk is Dede Scozzafava in a suit!

Nancy,  November 4, 2009 5:29 PM

Mark Kirk: "I would have picked someone different."
Governor Palin: Then pick someone different to endorse you.

Dan C,  November 4, 2009 5:30 PM

Sarah could just keep quiet about illinois as there are bigger fish to fry. But, we as Sarah supporters should not hold her to some mythical standard. Hey, one day she will do something we do not agree with and that IS OK! I can live with that! What we know for sure, is that she will never lie to our faces or take us down a marxist path and that is HUGE in todays world. Politics is tough so lets not jump all over her if she endorses someone we happen to not like.

I live in illinois, and I would take Kirk over Burris thats for sure. Not a big Kirk fan but he if wins the primary i will vote for him against the corrupt democrat who will be a burris clone.

LT,  November 4, 2009 5:35 PM

Yes, Whit, it is. Its a crying shame Illinois finally has some Palin related news and it winds up being about Kirk....

Andrew,  November 4, 2009 5:37 PM

I have a feeling Kirk demanding--yes, he's demanding an endorsement--is only doing so so he can say that Palin, and the crazy extremists rejected him, in an attempt to boost his independent and moderate credentials.

He is a RINO, and borderline liberal.  There i a better candidate running against him in the primary.

Nancy,  November 4, 2009 5:38 PM

She should send her answer back attached to the knife he stabbed in her back last year.

LT,  November 4, 2009 5:39 PM

I just wish this state would give us a Republican that is something other than a centrist. Conservatism is unheard of around here and frankly, it gets awfully lonely sometimes.

BetseyRoss,  November 4, 2009 5:39 PM

Mark Kirk?????? Why in the world would she endorse him?  Why would he even ask?  Something smells with this one.  I am glad I don't live in Illinois.  After all we in VA just elected three wonderful Conservatives for state office.  (Sorry, just bragging after 8 years of Democrap governing)

Tommy Report,  November 4, 2009 5:39 PM

I don't know why you guys would be so quick to read something nefarious in Kirk seeking her endorsement.  Even if Kirk wants her to reject his request, almost nobody will see it that way.  They'll just remember the fact that he sought it.

I'm with Patty and would probably endorse this moderate.  It'd be great PR for her.

gardunne63,  November 4, 2009 5:41 PM

Sarah, run away from this loser as fast as you can...

AKReport,  November 4, 2009 5:50 PM

Oh how i wish sarah would endorse marco rubio. the guy is a winner, and has to charisma to win.

riley4palin,  November 4, 2009 5:51 PM

Tommy:

I will have to disagree with you on endorsing Kirk.

Governor Palin has written WSJ opinions on Obama's Cap & Tax policy.  If anyone knows about Energy it is Palin.  John Kerry and Boxer responded weeks later in the NY Times article trying to discredit her because she obviously hit a bull's eye.

How could Palin turn around now and go against her own principles and endorse a candidate that would vote for this Cap & Tax bill?

I will add that his comments about her not being qualified for VP did not win him any brownie points.

This would be horrible PR in my opinion and the media will twist this for all its worth.

I would much prefer the media to twist it like she rejected his request versus being labeled a flip flopper.  That is much harder to overcome.

AnnO,  November 4, 2009 5:52 PM

RINOS need go go ..... I'm sure Sarah is wise enough not to support this guy. He's only wants to use her after seeing what happened last night ...

GO SARA 2012

Indemind,  November 4, 2009 5:54 PM

Sorry Tommy Rep....Said this in the last post. You just don't know what you are going to get with Kirk. MHO is  "Better The Devil You Know".

sarah rocks 2012

Mia,  November 4, 2009 5:57 PM

Your Kidding?????....MY Stars!

Mia,  November 4, 2009 5:59 PM

Time to take a ride under the bus...KIRK!

Puma.for.Life,  November 4, 2009 6:07 PM

I was just going to post this; I hope they get this clip up here, it was really good. The press is spinning NY23 as a loss for Palin, but the Dem losses in VA and NJ have nothing to do with Obama.  It would be funny if it wasn't so sick.  Also, he ranted about a guest he had over for dinner last night who is GOP, it sounds like, and who spouted all of the MSM spin about Sarah and Rush said he lost it and ranted on about it and afterwards the guy said that's what I wanted to hear. Rush then talked about how if "friends" are believing this spin then that is really stupid, which it is.  I hope Sheya gets the clip up.

JeanA,  November 4, 2009 6:30 PM

Kirk is doing this for one reason and one reason only.  To get his name in the news and quess what it is working.

Indemind,  November 4, 2009 6:36 PM

Puma.for.life... Just went back to my Rush 24/7, and I agree it is a GOOD sound byte,
for C4P.

sarah rocks 2012

Seabee,  November 4, 2009 6:38 PM

Techno,

Of course the MSM will never highlight the positive impact Sarah had on this and future elections. Axe and Gibby have their a$$es in four wheel drive today trying to minimize the damage done to their strategery and spinning it into some kind of a victory for their side.

hrh,  November 4, 2009 6:47 PM

Don't be so shy, Whit, would you just tell us how you feel about this guy? Spit it out, would ya'? ;)

hrh,  November 4, 2009 6:48 PM

Yep, it's smelly all right. He's even trying to use Fred Malek 'cause he knows Fred's one of the few allies Sarah has in the DC establishment ...

hrh,  November 4, 2009 6:51 PM

Sorry you couldn't vote in the ABC poll; perhaps that's why Mitt is winning - there's some crazy computer glitch ...

hrh,  November 4, 2009 6:54 PM

BTW, I just voted again from my home computer, and Sarah's losing by about 700 votes now ...

And here's an article about so-called moderates - and at least they talk about moderates in the Dem party, too. But they use Sarah's pic for the article so they can get more hits!!

yogi41,  November 4, 2009 6:54 PM

My thought exactly. And don't forget, Newt has endorsed Kirk. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if this Newt was behind this "demand".

Seabee,  November 4, 2009 6:55 PM

In fact Rush mentioned this today. He said "there are only three people on our side who are the most vocal about conservative principles, and all of them are WOMEN: Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman and Marshall (sorry, forgot her first name)

Seabee,  November 4, 2009 7:10 PM

Marsha Blackburn not Marshall, sorry.

Love That Lady,  November 4, 2009 8:09 PM

If Sarah is asked by oprah; If Mark Kirk is picked by the GOP will you endorse him?
Her answer will be, “I would have picked someone different."

Bill in Baltimore,  November 4, 2009 8:23 PM

Tommy,

it seems kind of fishy coming on the heels of the NY-23 loss. Seems actually like it's piling on.

Where does this guy come from, anyway ? Out of the clear blue sky a moderate Republican seeks through the press to get a Palin endorsement ?

just doesn't smell right . . .

PEC,  November 4, 2009 8:30 PM

He is not winning in the General w/o the State Conservatives.  HE needs a coalition.  A pure RINO will lose to a Dem everytime.  Ask Lincoln Chaffee what good it did him.  Sarah needs to stay out of this.  If asks she can say there are lots of elections and she is evaluating each one own its on.

PEC,  November 4, 2009 8:39 PM

Oh.  Where the WH says they are 2-0 against Sarah.  That is actually 2 -3.  Saxby Chambliss, Virginia and New Jesey GOVs were all endorsed by Sarah.  She did everything for the VA Gov she did for Hoffman.  Facebook endorsement and PAC money.  Chambliss she went and campaigned for while Obama did a message for the Dem.

Folks I am still torn on this Kirk thing though leaning toward throwing him under the bus for last years comments.  This would be the one Senate Seat most valuable to take from the Dems due to the fact it means Obama doesn't have the political clout to hold his own seat.  Don't buy him wanting to show he is not with the right.  Without the Right the only thing he will have to prepare in the General Election is a concession speech.

ALA,  November 4, 2009 10:07 PM

I hope she runs away from the guy as quickly as she can .This RINO prick is practically my neighbor .lives couple streets down.IN this one i will give my vote to democrat. He is worse than Scozzafave-believe me.

PEC,  November 5, 2009 8:18 AM

Trust me the experts know that NY-23 wasn't as bad as the left string media made it out.  For what was a totally new and disorganized campaign that was down 15-20% with 2 weeks left to come with 4% of winning a district and likely a win if the Repub didn't endorse or endorsed the Repub and this is scary to people.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 5, 2009 8:58 AM

media made it out.
- Yes, I totally agree
