Chris Daggett Admits to Error; Updated with Hilarious News

A conclusion to a story that just made me smile the entire day (I'm still smiling after the Yankees win tonight) (emphasis added).

A Daggett spokesman acknowledges that Daggett’s claim on MSNBC was incorrect.

“She never contacted us asking us to drop out,” Daggett spokesman Tom Johnson told ABC News.

Johnson said Daggett got the incorrect impression about Palin from people on his campaign bus who themselves were mistaken and relying on an unsubstantiated blog item.

“Someone wrote mistakenly on a blog that Sarah Palin asked Chris Daggett to drop out of the race,” said Johnson.

Kevin Gass, a volunteer traveling on the Daggett campaign bus, heard the incorrect Palin item, assumed that it was true and twittered about it from the Daggett campaign bus.

“I could not make this up,” tweeted Gass. “Sarah Palin just asked Chris to pull out of race. Republicans getting scared much?”

It turned out that Palin, who endorsed third party conservative Doug Hoffman over liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava in the 23rd congressional district of New York, had not called on Daggett to leave the New Jersey governor’s race. All she had done in an Oct. 27 Facebook post is urge voters to back Chris Christie, the Republican candidate, over Jon Corzine, the incumbent Democratic governor, and to give money to the Republican Governors Association.

“It seemed plausible, even though it was inaccurate, because [Rudy] Giuliani and other big Republicans have asked him to drop out,” said Johnson.

Johnson said that neither Daggett nor anyone in the campaign knew that the Palin claim was false until the former Alaska governor wrote about it on her Facebook page, prompting reporters to contact the campaign.

“We didn’t know it was inaccurate until Palin put this thing out,” said Johnson.

“It’s a big ado about nothing,” he added. “We’re getting more attention for this than for our detailed plan to cut property taxes by 25 percent.”

I still think Corzine wins this one 45-43 over Christie. James Carville will likely have a poll out tomorrow showing Corzine in the lead and I think he'd be right for the first time in awhile.

Update: David Frum has renamed "New Majority" the "FrumForum." Unlike Chris Daggett, I'm not making this up.

Thanks for posting this, it cracked me up.
What a bunch of idiots.

When will they learn, if Sarah wants you out of the race, she won't ask through intermediaries, she'll tell you

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  November 2, 2009 12:32 AM

The part of the ABC story that you put in bold print is hilarious!

I wonder if no-name politicians will start attacking Governor Palin just to get press!

Wait, most politicians and pundits do that already. What am I thinking?

Nancy,  November 2, 2009 12:34 AM

Do any politicians, or liberal media check things? Ever?
So, some goober on a blog, says to a bunch goobers reading the blog that Sarah Palin told Daggett to drop out of the race, and then another goober in the Daggett campaign sees it, and Twitters his goober followers, and the goober, Daggett repeats it on some goober tv channel.
Hey, goobers! Quit making things up!

I just received an email from Michelle Bachmann.  She is inviting everyone to Washington on Thursday 12noon to send a message to congress.  John Voight will be joining her.  They will be holding a press conference/rally on the steps of the Capital.

Our tea party group is getting a bus and we are going down...

"True Grit"....J. Noble Daggett!

Nancy,  November 2, 2009 12:42 AM

Actually, Mr. Daggett, she didn't tell you to drop out, but in between the time you said she did, and the time you admitted your error, she kinda did.

We have one of our local 912'ers driving to Washington...all the way from Illinois.

Recovering Democrat,  November 2, 2009 12:44 AM

Yeah, Daggett, lying is a big ado about nothing. Lying and false accusations, big whoop, huh? Well, if you can't be bothered to check your facts before sticking your foot in your mouth, why should voters trust you on anything? It reminds me of Obama. He lied profusely in his big healthcare speech before Congress. That story about the woman who supposedly died because she was denied coverage? Not true. Team Obama didn't bother to look for two sources on the story. They went with the story from a leftwing writer, who later admitted to getting the facts wrong. That was just ONE example of many many false statements Obama made that night, and it's a pattern throughout his entire presidency. He slaughtered the facts about Billie Jean King for her Congressional Medal of Honor. He misspeaks about the reimbursement rates for doctors. He accuses everyone else of lying, but almost always gets his own facts wrong.

This is Obama's America ... incompetency and glib deceit.

The Anti-Sarah comments are funnier than usual.

(She is dumb, irrelevant, and this was a dirty trick to trap Daggett.) LOL

On the Daggett bus, they throw truth under the bus.

Other names Frum was kicking around:
Frum For Um - now that was actually exclusively for the 2008 campaign. He made it into a bumper sticker. Get it: Obama is Um. Never mind.
Newt Majority - that was before......the incident.
LittleMen - Tim Geithner loved that one.
Iwishsomeonewouldvisitmywebsite - that one sounded too desperate (which he is, by the way)
MarkLevinsPunchingBag - bad memories

You know one of us crazy bloggers ought to float the rumor that Sarah has "gone green." And we could announce that iif elected, she will govern America from her laptop in Alaska, thereby eliminating the need for carbon-emitting travel on Air Force One.

Now THAT's CHANGE you can believe :-)

JP,  November 2, 2009 2:01 AM

They are saying in the DailyKos comments that Sarah (her voice) is making robocalls in Virginia targeted to McDonnell's base supporters, urging them to get out and vote on Tuesday. They say the robocalls started going out Sunday evening.

I think every member of Congress should telecommute. Make them live in their districts. It will be like those old high school films, "Scared Straight." They won't dare vote the wrong way because the pitchfork crew will be at their front porch by sundown. Ha!

JeanA,  November 2, 2009 6:00 AM

I think from now on Gov. Palin should call everybody out on their lies.  Since the fringe media won't do their job Gov. Palin should do it for them.  Before Gov. Palin worked 24/7 but now she has plenty of time on her hands to call them all out on their lies.  She could have a special page labeled " All of the WH Lies That The MSM Won't TEll You and for a Bonus Round all the Lies the MSM tells you, Let's Talk."

mika b on pmsnbc talking about the ny 23 race as being taken over the fringe wing of the republican party Rush, Glen and Sara.

Yep, gotta push the meme that Sarah's far right wing. Thats why i'm liking the orca interview more and more. Time to show America who she really is and what she really stands up for.

Timex Girl: Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

So now they say the tea party isn't controled by GOP..

section9,  November 2, 2009 7:55 AM

Well I'll be damned!

McDonnell grew a pair and finally ignored Gillespie long enough to ask Sarah to make some robocalls for him. Smart boy. Tells you that he needs the Closer to get his peeps out in his safe districts.

Too bad Christie is such a putz in Jersey not to have realized the same thing.

hrh,  November 2, 2009 10:53 AM

According to CNN, and if you listen to the call, it's paid for by the Faith and Freedom Ralph Reed group.

McDonnell's campaign is saying they knew nothing about it until CNN told them.

So no, McDonnell did not grow a pair.

And I believe Sarah's beef last year about the robocalls was that they were attack calls, not that they were robocalls. Hers is a get out and vote reminder, not an attack.

CNN, where lies are born and prospered ....

Also notice that a Democrat recorded the call and gave it to CNN, the supposed straight down the middle, unbiased network. Yeah, right ...
