Dan Calabrese: Palin in Wasilla: Mastery of governing detail, resistance to insider assimilation

Dan Calabrese has a great piece in northstarnational.com about Governor Palin's "resistance to insider assimilation". Mr. Calabrese examines the second chapter in Governor Palin's book, called "Kitchen Table Politics". This chapter is where you really start to get a feel how Governor Palin applies her conservative principles and does not play the "insider" games when it comes to governing. Mr. Calabrese writes:

You can’t help but notice that just about everyone who is part of the political establishment detests Sarah Palin. And you can’t help but notice that Palin couldn’t care less.

Early in the second chapter of Going Rogue, a chapter titled “Kitchen-Table Politics,” you learn everything you need to know to understand why. This is the way Palin has been wired for a very long time. During her two terms on the Wasilla City Council, followed by two terms as the city’s mayor, she consistently demonstrated a refreshing immunity to the insider mentality that tends to afflict people who serve in government at any level.

Recruited to run for the Council in 1992 by local power broker Nick Carney, Palin was seen as an attractive face who would support the usual way of doing business in Wasilla. She wasn’t.

In one of the first tests of her independence, Palin opposed a proposal touted by Carney, her political patron, to force residents to pay for neighborhood trash pickup rather than hauling their garbage to the dump themselves, as most did, and as Palin says she still does.

Like I said above, this story about her first days on the Wasilla city council really bring to light the way Governor Palin would govern at all levels of elected office in Alaska, all the way up to Governor. Mr. Calabrese continues:

Why was this so important to Carney? Because he owned the local garbage truck company. If you’ve never had much exposure to local politics – and this is largely true anywhere you go – it’s a pretty big deal for a young, inexperienced political (especially a woman) to so blatantly go against the person who recruited you into politics and supported you in your first campaign. You come under tremendous pressure to fall into line. Most cave, right then and there, long before they ever sniff politics at a higher level.

After Governor Palin was elected mayor of Wasilla, her resistance to insider politics was even more prevalent. Mr. Calebrese continues:

It was as Wasilla’s mayor that she encountered the kind of insider resistance to responsive government that would also await her later in Juneau. After she defeated the incumbent mayor, Palin recalls assembling her cabinet for the first time. As they sat with their arms folded, glaring at her, she received little enthusiasm as she talked about reviewing budgets and looking for places to cut in order to redirect money to building roads and sewers.

The chief of police flat-out refused to even look for budget savings, beginning a chilly relationship that ultimately resulted in Palin firing him and – get this – being sued by him for sex discrimination. (It took three years, but Palin was vindicated – another harbinger of things to come.)

What I think is the most important part of the piece Mr. Calabrese's writes:

Among Palin-haters, one of the most popular canards is that she is an airhead, and clearly not capable of dealing with the intricacies of government. As this chapter demonstrates, nothing could be further from the truth.

Palin not only has a keen grasp of the details of governing and budgeting, she also understands the political difficulties inherent in making government responsive. Many of her antagonists at the national level scoffed at the notion that her experience in Wasilla was of any value. Quite the contrary, local government is where a public officials decisions have the most direct impact on the electorate. It’s where you really have to understand the ins and outs of what you’re doing.

I think the above excerpt is the fundamental reason why Governor Palin's book tour and reintroduction to America is so important. Many moderates and independents who have doubts about her qualifications right now will begin to "see the light" and give her strong consideration if she decides to run for President in 2012 or beyond.

Mr. Calabrese concludes:

The more you read about Palin’s experience in governing, the more you understand why the national political establishments of both parties hope to smother her political career in its crib. She knows how to govern – better than most of them do, in fact. She just won’t do it the way they do it, and that scares the crap out of them.

Couldn't have said it any better.

Just got the audio version of "Going Rogue." It's 8 hrs. on 7 CDs. Most audio books are around 6 hrs, so this is a real bang for the buck. I popped the first CD in the car on the way back from the store and it's like Sarah is in the car with you telling her story. Just uber cool!

Well, I'm off to NC in the morning at dark thirty to spend Thanksgiving with some relatives, then get my game face on for my cancer surgery on 12/3. I'm ready to light this candle and get it over with.

May all my comrades in ordinary barbaria have a blessed Thanksgiving. We all have much to be thankful for.

Wow.  It is Sarah voice reading.  Hope the liberals don't start another round of mocking her in her own voice again.

manajordan,  November 24, 2009 11:55 AM

That's awesome. Enjoy your travels with Sarah.

This is an excellent piece. I enjoyed every chapter in Sarah's book. I'm glad this writer is putting the spotlight on the 2nd chapter that really gives the reader a feel for how she governs. He is right the political machines/establishments don't like Sarah, and she couldn't care less. I hope more people will put spotlights on her record and how she actually governed.

Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the storytelling.

I think Chapters 1-3 are the most important in the book.  It tells who she is.

Bestbud,  November 24, 2009 12:09 PM

Thanks Hal... for all the research, finding and sharing with us.

She knows how to govern---Better than most--just won't do It their way... scares the CRAP out of them!

I couldn't say it any better... Sarah is the only one that Is NOT Backassword!!

Dan has written several excellent pieces on Sarah.  One she included on SARAHPAC.  He writes for the NorthstarNational and he is on Facebook.  Sarah needs to keep him in mind.

latinchic,  November 24, 2009 12:19 PM

Glad to see someone finally "getting it".

Whitney,  November 24, 2009 12:23 PM

This is a good piece. It reminds me of the parable of the talents when the man who had 5 talents gained 5 more. The master said he was faithful with a "few things", and that he will put him in charge of many things.

Although this is not a perfect analogy, it is a good reminder that although local politics may seem "small", the ability one has to govern well in that arena is a picture of their ability to be entrusted with a larger consituency. Sarah has invested her talents well and will use these well if she is so entrusted.

Now you know why Sarah has so many enemies and why she has so many notches in her gun.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 1:04 PM

Who is the reader ?

I am reading Ann Coulter's "Guilty" book on tape and the lady sounds like she's a lib, so it's kind of distracting.

But a good read / listen.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 1:05 PM

Whitney, it's a perfect analogy, I've been wanting to post it for a while, the exact thing.

(but you're first ...)

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 1:07 PM

it's been relatively quiet today.

I have a feeling we might get slammed with posts the rest of the day.

Pray her voice holds out, The Villages is coming up soon (2:30 I believe)

OT: Governor Palin's Orlando stop update--

They've handed out all original wristbands (I'm assuming 500), and then an additional 500 standby wristbands. And there is probably still 200-300 indidivuals after that who will have a chance at a book plate only. And this is still 6 hours before she arrives.

People are eyeing my wristband--I feel a need to hide it or else o.O

Bean Counter,  November 24, 2009 1:10 PM

Sarah reads it herself. It's very professionally done. Audio quality is outstanding. She reads it with a lot of expression, feeling, just really great.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 1:12 PM

Oh, my, that is amazing that she reads it.
I can't wait to get it, she will literally be part of our family.

ChillinInMN,  November 24, 2009 1:21 PM

That is a wonderful analogy! You are so right!!!

ChillinInMN,  November 24, 2009 1:24 PM

Have fun Andrew!!! While in line tell others about C4P - the best place to get all Palin news!

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 1:34 PM

Andrew, how are you posting comments ?

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 1:38 PM

See, I told you we were going to get slammed with posts later today

Great article. Thanks for posting.

'Resistance to insider assimilation'
Quite a mouthful.. but the fact that she won't budge under peer pressure, under bosses or authority figures when she knows what is right.. that's why I love her, and that's what makes her a national treasure.

Go Sarah!

cookboy,  November 24, 2009 4:41 PM

My iphone always comes up with the old comment link. How do I get the new one?

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 4:44 PM

not sure.
Recently I have been able to view Echo comments on Blackberry storm, but
the font size is fixed even if I try and increase it and I can't post from
it.

Andrew,  November 25, 2009 12:55 AM

I have no idea why it would be different.  All I did was log in normally on my iPhone and I was brought to the comments.
